Massive thank you to... [14.0] Jack: Carlos Campos [16.0] Frank: Art Faulkner [18.0] Frank: Sam Dahmer [20.0] Koel: On with the show [22.0] Koel: Let's Drone Out [52.29] Jack: Hello and you're listening to Let's Drone Out [55.29] Jack: Tonight you're joined by everyone, so you're at Curry Kitten [58.29] Jack: Hello [59.29] Jack: Carl [60.29] Jack: Howdy [61.29] Jack: Steven [62.29] Jack: Hello [63.29] Jack: And I'm Jack, Bright Until I Fly [65.29] Jack: Hello [67.29] Jack: And let's start the show [70.29] Curry: First thing we should discuss is Carl's two-tone head, which I... Nate, once you see it, you can't unsee it [75.29] Jack: Of what the weird... yeah, what's that about? Is that wearing a hat? [81.29] Koel: Yeah, long story short, I went to a race car sort of event thing and I decided to wear my hat backwards on a bright day. Great idea [91.29] Stephen: I was thinking, did you have some kind of bandana or something going on there? It's hard to visualize [97.29] Koel: No, it was just... I don't have a hat handy to show you, but no, it was just me being silly and not really realizing I should wear my hat the right way [108.29] Jack: Trouble is, it would get in the way of the camera, wouldn't it? [111.29] Koel: It would, yeah, yeah [113.29] Jack: It's what you do for your art [114.29] Koel: Yeah, you know, gotta get these sunburns, it's all for the greater good [120.29] Jack: Has anyone been flying this week? [123.29] Jack: A little bit, yeah [125.29] Koel: I haven't flown this week, unfortunately, no [128.29] Jack: Oh, Steven, what have you been flying then? Tell us what's going on [134.29] Stephen: I'm trying to remember what the heck I was flying now, I think I got my little analogue two doors out and started flying them [139.29] Stephen: Oh yeah, I flew something, yeah [142.29] Stephen: I decided to fly analogue to remember what it was like in the bad old days [146.29] Stephen: I got this GEP RC Phoenix 2.5 out, which I thought was a rip-roaring monster of a quad when I got it [154.29] Stephen: It's a 4S 2.5-inch with 4,500 kV motors, oh, the power [160.29] Stephen: And hard-mounted stack [164.29] Stephen: And apparently very little in the way of separation between the video feed and the ESC [172.29] Stephen: It was fun [175.29] Stephen: And then I looked, I flew this back-to-back with a 2.5-inch that I built myself and thought [182.29] Stephen: Yeah, I am pretty good at building quads, I was quite happy with my building skills after this [187.29] Stephen: Because it was fuzzy and horrific [191.29] Stephen: It was interesting because I remember flying this and being astounded by the speed back in the day [196.29] Stephen: I started on micros, I didn't start on 5-inch, so this was, yeah, brought back some memories [201.29] Stephen: But not necessarily good memories when you compare it to newer builds [206.29] Curry: So you do seem a bit of a digital snob, so what made you go back and try some analogue to remember the bad old days? [217.1] Curry: I've just got so much of it kicking around [219.1] Stephen: I mean, you think, oh, digital snob, he's just got digital [222.1] Stephen: I think I've got this little guy, which is quite fun [228.1] Stephen: I've been kind of getting them out, I've got one of these little carbon fibre antennas [232.1] Stephen: And I just felt like revisiting some of the lighter quads [235.1] Stephen: Because I do like digital, but I don't really think you can do digital or anything less than a 3-inch [242.1] Stephen: And you have to kind of really go light to get it down to a 3-inch [246.1] Stephen: It's kind of, it's a bit of a compromise [249.1] Stephen: And yeah, I just felt like flying some of the smaller Park Flyer builds [253.1] Stephen: So I put a Jamden ELRS in here, which used to have an FR sky [258.1] Stephen: It's a terrible build, like the FC is touching the top plate [262.1] Stephen: And the amount of force required to get the receiver in there and put the top plate on [267.1] Stephen: means the top plate is bulging slightly in the middle [270.1] Stephen: It's really not ideal [272.1] Stephen: It flies surprisingly well considering all that pain that I've put it through [278.1] Stephen: Yeah, I just felt like monkeying around a bit with some of them for the sake of old time [282.1] Stephen: Has anyone else done anything this week? [285.1] Curry: No, I was just going to say though, you say you can't get under sort of 3 inches for digital [289.1] Curry: But I did know this appearing on my YouTube feed today [293.1] Curry: Although I haven't looked at them as the HD0 whoop light kit [298.1] Curry: Did anybody notice that or has anybody watched them? [301.1] Curry: No, I haven't [302.1] Curry: Yeah, I saw that [303.1] Curry: I think Painus looked at one, Medtech looked at one, I just haven't watched them [308.1] Stephen: You can do it [310.1] Stephen: I think HD0 is a very different proposition [313.1] Stephen: You can definitely do it a bit lighter [315.1] Stephen: It's just, you have to compromise a bit [317.1] Stephen: For instance, you can put DJI on a 2.5 inch [320.1] Stephen: That was my first DJI quad [322.1] Stephen: You see that huge gap in the chassis [324.1] Stephen: It's because that's designed for a full size air unit on 2.5 inch props [329.1] Stephen: And it flies like a whale on a go-kart [332.1] Stephen: It's awful [334.1] Stephen: It's got these fancy LEDs to make you think it's high tech and cool [337.1] Stephen: So they flash, quite a lot of LEDs on top [341.1] Stephen: But it flew absolute pants [343.1] Stephen: So yeah, the whoop VTX is nice [345.1] Stephen: You get a very small camera, you get like a board camera [348.1] Stephen: Instead of a camera that has a molded metal housing [351.1] Stephen: You've just got the PCB, which is a nice touch, right? [355.1] Koel: So just flat and little lens on the front kind of thing [359.1] Stephen: The same thing you see on whoops basically [361.1] Stephen: Where you dispense with the camera housing with the bolts in the side [364.1] Stephen: I did also notice that Betaflight finally put out RC7 [368.1] Stephen: And fixed the issue with the ICM2689 gyros [375.1] Stephen: Where they were worried that it might brick some of your gyros [379.1] Stephen: So I started to get out my rare and weirder builds like this Recon 5 [384.1] Stephen: And I upgraded that because that was with the affected gyro [387.1] Stephen: And yeah, it's still yours [390.1] Stephen: It still registers your movement, so off to a good start there [394.1] Stephen: Probably flies like pants, but it's always been a bit of a pain, this [398.1] Jack: Is it because they're waiting on the new, you know, having to switch over to different gyros [405.1] Stephen: Yeah, the MPU6000 has been basically end of life since forever [410.1] Stephen: And people started to migrate to what they thought were newer gyros that they should be using [415.1] Stephen: And some of them moved to BMI270 [418.1] Stephen: And the MPU6000 you could sample 8K [421.1] Stephen: The BMI270 apparently you can only sample at 3.2K [425.1] Stephen: Which just throws off air all the timings inside the FC [429.1] Stephen: And this week they've been debugging these issues [432.1] Stephen: And they reached out to TDK who makes the gyros [435.1] Stephen: And TDK have been like, well, why the hell are you using that? [438.1] Stephen: That's not the right one to use [441.1] Stephen: They've got these thousands of FCs the manufacturers have made out in the wild [445.1] Stephen: And it turns out that the vendors just kind of were throwing darts at the product sheet for gyros [452.1] Stephen: And they went to TDK who are completely befuddled as to why anyone would have used that particular model [457.1] Stephen: It doesn't make any sense [459.1] Stephen: So I think we're starting to see some interesting guidance coming out of the Betaflight team [465.1] Stephen: Where they are looking to take the initiative [469.1] Stephen: And rather than wait for board manufacturers to make any old stuff [473.1] Stephen: And they have to deal with it [475.1] Stephen: They're going to get out ahead of it [476.1] Stephen: And start to actually recommend the chips that should be used [480.1] Stephen: And talk to the people who make gyros [482.1] Stephen: And try and narrow down what is a good gyro ahead of time [486.1] Stephen: Because otherwise they've got to cope with a fallout of a half dozen different gyros [491.1] Stephen: And none of which quite work properly [496.1] Jack: And that's all still in the testing stage [500.1] Jack: Or is this a release candidate, isn't it? [504.1] Jack: It's not an official release [505.1] Jack: Oh yeah, they're on RC7 now [507.1] Stephen: And RC7, they changed a bunch of stuff with GPS by the sound of it [512.1] Stephen: There's almost enough work that GPS [517.1] Stephen: They were talking about putting it into the 4.4 release [521.1] Stephen: Because as far as that can... [522.1] Stephen: Well, some people are saying that the amount of GPS fixes actually warrant it being a major update [528.1] Stephen: Not just at RC [529.1] Stephen: RCs are supposed to be... [531.1] Stephen: Everything broadly works [532.1] Stephen: You just fix the features that you intended to put in at the start [536.1] Stephen: Whereas the GPS return to home behavior is going to be a lot more polished [543.1] Stephen: It's not just they removed some bugs [546.1] Stephen: It handles everything completely differently from what I can hear [550.1] Stephen: To the point where it actually just... [552.1] Stephen: It doesn't bounce anymore [554.1] Stephen: It'll land and disarm smoothly [557.1] Stephen: They'll return to home [559.1] Stephen: If it did land, it would bounce around like a lunatic [562.1] Stephen: And maybe like flip itself over and do... [565.1] Stephen: Lord knows what [566.1] Stephen: And now apparently it's incredibly polished [569.1] Stephen: So I'm looking forward to actually trying that out [571.1] Stephen: I've never really been brave enough to try the return to home combination of not being brave enough [577.1] Stephen: And never wanting to prevent myself from arming without the GPS lock [583.1] Stephen: So I'd just be like, ah, we'll use return to home [585.1] Stephen: I'll just use it as a speedo [587.1] Stephen: Because I'm not patient enough to wait [590.1] Stephen: Yeah [591.1] Curry: They've got an actual return to home [593.1] Curry: Because previously rescue mode was I'm going to crash basically at you [597.1] Curry: Pilot aimed quad was pretty much what you were talking about before, right? [601.1] Curry: So they're now coming up with the basis of it will attempt to land and disarm [605.1] Stephen: Yeah [606.1] Curry: Wow [607.1] Curry: Well, it was always possible [609.1] Curry: The problem is it just didn't know which way it was facing [612.1] Curry: But you could determine that by going in a forwards manner [615.1] Curry: And determining it from what happens on the GPS coordinates, couldn't you? [619.1] Curry: It's just somebody had to get around to actually writing that [622.1] Stephen: Yeah, Chris Thompson has done a lot of work now CT snooze [628.1] Stephen: He's put a ton of work in there and it's looking really promising [631.1] Stephen: And there's talk in the next release of Altitude Hold and things as well [636.1] Stephen: So remember when Tommy was on and he was saying, ah, all these pilots, they really love beta flight [641.1] Stephen: But they're absolutely crapping themselves because they've got $20,000 of camera in the air [647.1] Stephen: And if they fly under a bridge and it, you know, loses signal [652.1] Stephen: They don't necessarily want GPS return to home where it flies up into the underside of a bridge or something [657.1] Stephen: They want it just stay there until you get signal back [660.1] Stephen: Well, that's going to be implemented by the sound of it, which is very promising [664.1] Stephen: So it will just hold itself at an altitude and not try and fly back to the pilot [669.1] Stephen: Just be like, oh, no signal. Well, I guess I'll stay here until I get signal again [674.1] Koel: Which I think that's pretty much very similar to what the DJI FPV drone does [680.1] Koel: I saw a guy post a video recently where he I guess fail safed [685.1] Koel: And then his quad will just just hover is basically on the spot. So that's kind of cool [691.1] Koel: Just extra safety features, right? [694.1] Jack: Yeah, you do you do run into these guys who have like return to home [700.1] Jack: And they've got a problem with their transmitter and all it does is fly back to them and torment them [706.1] Jack: And they have to stay there and wait for it to crash [711.1] Stephen: That's all out the sky stays 50 foot in the sky and meanders round approaching the nearby trees [719.1] Curry: Daring them. Yeah, just imagine people running around with their hands out just for when it's going to go [726.74] Koel: And hope the props aren't still spinning [729.74] Koel: Yeah, be fine [732.74] Stephen: What's a failure to I'm still a bit scared to try the seven inch I had this prop resonance issue [738.74] Stephen: And I found that HQ make macro quad props, right? [742.74] Stephen: Where they're carbon fiber ones instead of polycarbonate that carbon fiber reinforced resin [749.74] Stephen: And I'm pretty sure it's gonna stop the props flexing [754.74] Stephen: But I'm slightly terrified to try it out because the props now look kind of side like and dangerous [762.74] Stephen: And I want a much larger space to try it out. I think basically a bunch of knives on your quad [769.74] Stephen: Yeah, it's a little bit scary [772.74] Jack: That's the problem with the old carbon fiber like props [776.74] Jack: They they were I remember the back in the day the injuries from them were like nothing else [786.34] Koel: Well, even just the regular props that I use when I have to, you know, swap swap them out or anything [792.34] Koel: My fingers get cut up from having to hold on to them tight enough to get the you know, just to get the [799.34] Stephen: We all suffer from baby engineer hands, don't we too much time indoors [804.34] Stephen: I get so much stick to help my wife out in the garden [808.34] Stephen: I've got the strength to lift stuff, but I've got like a baby engineer hands [811.34] Stephen: So I get myself a blister in like five minutes doing any like real work [819.34] Stephen: What else is goodies exceedingly cheap value goodies [824.34] Stephen: Have you heard of pro drone? [828.34] Stephen: Can't say I have [830.34] Stephen: There are a bunch of Polish guys and they make these these dipoles, right? [835.34] Stephen: So it's a folded dipole. So you've got, you know, the core of the coax going one way and the shielding going the other way [841.34] Stephen: And they hand make these and tune them and I think this is 70 Polish slotty [848.34] Stephen: Which roughly translates into sweet nothing in English money [854.34] Stephen: Yeah, half a sausage roll. They're a really nice bunch of people came with an absolute ton of those little nuts [862.34] Stephen: The little plastic 3d printed nuts that you put on us SMA and 10. Oh, the spin is [869.34] Stephen: Yeah, I'm gonna see what how much is 70 slotty in pounds [875.34] Stephen: Yes, I think the whole thing was like 13 quid for a couple of them [881.34] Stephen: It wasn't very much. There were like five or six quid per [885.34] Stephen: Her antenna for a handmade antenna is nothing and they seem really solidly made [890.34] Stephen: So I've replaced my dodgy FR sky antennas with those [895.34] Jack: Yeah, I had a buddy like pop round last night. So I gave him a plane and had a look through some of the old flying footage [908.34] Jack: Yeah, I keep my veins up there. So I've got a I've still got a finished one and [917.34] Jack: Hopefully I'll go and fly soon. There's just no no one around down here to fly with [923.34] Jack: I suppose I could, you know, give a few people a shout but yeah, it's pretty quiet [929.34] Stephen: I should point out there weren't 70 slotty each. There were 25 slotty each [934.34] Stephen: There were 70 slotty for two of them and postage. So yeah, it was pretty cheap [940.34] Jack: I can pull out an X nectar to my bare hands. Don't mess with shady lads [948.26] Jack: He can he can twist your nipples right off [954.26] Koel: Caroline [955.26] Koel: I know [956.26] Koel: Jack's looking up at my bottom, my fanny as you guys would say [961.26] Koel: Is that right? [962.26] Curry: No, that's the front bottom for a lady [964.26] Koel: Well, that last Canadian say it wrong then interesting [968.26] Jack: Yeah, and the Yanks [970.26] Jack: Yeah [972.26] Jack: Yeah [974.26] Jack: Because we call it a bum bag [977.26] Koel: Or a fanny pack [979.26] Koel: Oh [981.26] Koel: Interesting. So that's a that's a no-no [985.26] Koel: It's just a Hawaiian shirt [992.26] Koel: Party party Stephen [994.26] Jack: I know Cole's wearing a Jim shark shirt by the looks of it [998.26] Koel: Oh, yeah. Yeah [1001.57] Jack: Like working out super fit stuff [1003.57] Stephen: What have you been up to Jack doing any soldering any projects this week? [1008.57] Jack: No, like my bench is still absolutely a tip [1013.57] Jack: I've been I'd be mainly doing bit of 3d printing and retro video gaming [1020.57] Jack: So what's that? [1023.57] Jack: Raspberry Pi model b3 so printed a nice little case [1030.57] Jack: Yeah [1033.57] Jack: Yeah, what do you run on that? [1036.57] Jack: I was by retro pie. So I've been playing some old school. The thing is I'm waiting for the operation. I'm [1046.57] Jack: You know, I've had to come off my meds. I'm not very well [1049.57] Jack: So I can't really get out and I supposed to be with Frank EMF this week, but [1056.57] Jack: Not wanting to get covered [1060.57] Jack: I'm just having to like sit out really [1064.57] Jack: Which sucks because I paid money for an Airbnb and a [1069.57] Jack: Electromagnetic field ticket. So Frank's off for having the time of his life [1076.57] Stephen: So if um, if you're looking at something to tinker with on the pie, I totally recommend Bato Sarah [1081.57] Stephen: Which is this Linux distro that includes a ton of different emulators with a nice front end [1087.57] Stephen: And it's designed to plug into a TV or like a little handheld console [1092.57] Stephen: Looks really really nice. I've run in that on a couple of boxes around the house [1096.57] Stephen: I used to run it on a high powered PC and it would do everything from the really really ancient consoles like [1102.57] Stephen: Original Nintendo stuff all the way up to ps3 and just puts everything under one roof, which is kind of nice [1111.57] Jack: Yeah [1113.57] Jack: Tail spin you failed at the ease a bit of a weird one the old retro pie [1118.57] Jack: But you just kind of put the wrongs [1121.57] Jack: you kind of get the [1124.57] Jack: You're like plugging a USB and then it's sort of like generates a root directory [1131.57] Jack: We're like loads of different consoles on and then you put the roms in that and then it will load the roms off [1139.57] Jack: The USB which I thought was an all right way to do do it, but it was a bit weird [1147.57] Stephen: It's a front-end for emulation station as net most of these emulation station under the hood [1152.57] Jack: Yeah, send me the link to the [1155.57] Stephen: Yeah, I popped in the YouTube chat [1157.57] Stephen: Thanks, but it's nice to tinker with with battle Sarah like you get you get the same thing for Raspberry Pi [1164.57] Stephen: and PC and a whole bunch of SBCs [1167.57] Stephen: So you can have them on different bits of hardware and still have the same UI and same compatibility. It's quite nice [1175.57] Stephen: Anyway this week on emulation weekly [1178.57] Jack: I know [1180.01] Jack: Yeah, I just haven't haven't been able to [1184.01] Jack: You know sort of like go out and [1187.65] Jack: Go fly which sucks. So I'm I'm having to live vicariously through other people [1195.41] Koel: Yeah, I I flew the last time that I flew I mean everything was all good [1200.53] Koel: I was just doing some basic [1202.29] Koel: Maintenance on my quad because I crashed into a bunch of mud [1204.77] Koel: So just like cleaning it up and getting the dirt off and whatnot [1207.97] Koel: Well, I managed to rip the antenna [1212.13] Koel: Like from the I guess the installation [1215.49] Koel: for my VTX and I had to replace that which was [1220.53] Koel: you know, it's not that difficult, but it yeah, it was just kind of annoying and [1225.93] Koel: Yeah, so that was basically the only thing I've done in the past week quad related [1230.93] Stephen: but you know, I [1234.05] Koel: just the [1235.45] Koel: Tramp here the immersion RC stuff [1241.21] Koel: Actually have a couple sitting around I don't know where they are right now, but I just got a pack of them [1245.73] Koel: Oh, sorry antenna. What am I talking about? I have I think I have like the TBS. Oh [1253.29] Koel: You mean you like ripped off the pigtail? I'm in the pigtail. Yeah, I don't know why I said antenna [1259.69] Koel: Yeah, but antenna wise I'm just using the [1263.01] Koel: What's the sort of standard TBS antenna? [1268.45] Koel: What's the name of it now triumph I think yeah [1271.23] Stephen: Oh the OG orange ones that kind of like four corners [1276.01] Koel: I've got four bumps around them. It is that but it's the black version [1280.57] Stephen: So I'm not sure that's like the black ones are our HCP and the orange ones are LHC be [1286.73] Stephen: Yeah, yeah, I'm right hand. I'm running right hand. Yeah, that was the old ones. I've got a orange some DJI [1293.41] Stephen: Yeah, they work pretty well [1295.29] Koel: Yeah, I I've so far. I've used the the menace [1301.45] Koel: The menace ones the mad mushrooms from video aerial systems. I've tried the [1306.57] Koel: Triumph some I mean, yeah, the triumph seems to be pretty good [1312.65] Stephen: What about the old the Canadian bulletproof antenna? Have you tried these guys with the carbon fiber stem? [1319.25] Koel: So I haven't tried that is it the matchstick one or that's the matchstick one [1323.33] Stephen: Yeah, which is where they put this tube as a carbon fiber rod instead of a bit of insulation that they normally use [1329.97] Koel: so the only true RC antenna I've tried so far is I can't remember the name of it, but I [1336.53] Koel: It was it was on like the sort of like lower and budget [1340.01] Koel: Version, so I probably should have spent a little bit more and got the sort of higher-end one [1345.45] Koel: But I wasn't that impressed. But again, it was a really cheap one [1349.33] Stephen: Yeah, someone someone was raving about them. So I thought I'd give it a shot. I've just got the one so far [1355.09] Stephen: I haven't broken it, but I've only flown it once. We'll see. Yeah [1358.77] Stephen: Hasn't curry got some cool hardware that he's been checking out. You've gone all I flight seven inch crazy [1365.53] Curry: Yeah, although that was weeks ago. I flew that that was the chimera seven. I just managed to get round to actually [1372.01] Curry: Doing the last bit of the video for it this week because I was feeling rough and I was gonna fly some more and then I [1377.49] Curry: Thought I don't know when I'm gonna fly again. I'm just gonna put the video out. But yeah, that was good fun [1381.13] Curry: It was a nice [1382.57] Curry: It's like the old days of quads when you pick it up and he says war. This is heavy [1386.49] Curry: But yeah, it's a good is a good cruising [1389.57] Curry: Platform and because it's so big so long and has big plates and you can put the batteries on top or underneath [1395.81] Curry: Basically, I got it so I could replace the some bits with open HD [1399.73] Curry: so it's got plenty room to put the PI zero in and [1402.93] Curry: the Wi-Fi adapter and the digital camera [1406.17] Curry: So that should be my my replacement quad [1409.85] Curry: build for open HD, basically [1412.25] Curry: Which sounds that would sounds weird to talk about it only like a month ago. It was there was DJI [1417.65] Curry: There's possibly this thing called HD zero and now I can't look at my YouTube feed without seeing the latest [1425.33] Curry: speculation video about what [1427.49] Curry: Walk walk snail will have or what the new DJI goggles will bring because nobody knows and I'm sure [1434.13] Curry: Fat shark are just loving [1436.33] Curry: Everybody just speculating nonstop about it. They could very easily clear up any rumors with some actual facts [1444.05] Curry: But they I'm sure they're loving the fact that people have talked about this [1446.97] Stephen: I'm sure they're loving the press but asking people to plonk down [1451.33] Stephen: $700 for a pre-order doesn't seem to be helping the many because it turns out the fly we were asking [1457.33] Stephen: $2 for a pre-order [1459.05] Stephen: So a lot of people have just gone and ordered the fly we ones and be like, oh, maybe I'll wait another month after fat [1465.65] Stephen: Shark, whatever, but you know, it's a lot less than 700 [1471.05] Curry: It's big money. That's the thing. Everything is gonna be big money for quite a while. Yeah. Yeah [1478.33] Curry: No matter what? [1481.31] Stephen: Yeah, I went I went looking for flight controllers just idly wondering. There's a couple of old [1489.15] Stephen: Units where I thought I needed to upgrade as one that I really want to fly [1495.39] Stephen: This guy which is a 4-inch that I built a long time ago and I couldn't get it working properly [1500.51] Stephen: It's got one of these pin connected [1502.79] Stephen: FC and ESCs which I've always suspected. It was a death trap [1507.07] Stephen: This is the only quad I've actually fitted a beeper onto like a battery-powered beeper [1513.39] Stephen: And I want to fly it but every time I fly it tries to fly away [1518.15] Stephen: and it just kind of one time it just went bananas and I thought I'd lost it and I had to go hunting for it [1523.47] Stephen: It just took off and [1525.75] Stephen: Yeah, I God knows what was up with it [1528.39] Stephen: So I'm looking to replace it but all the the nice h7 FC seem to have dried up and get a Maytec [1535.19] Stephen: but nothing else and [1537.51] Stephen: ESCs seem to have just started to cost the earth all of a sudden a little bit worried cost too much [1544.51] Stephen: I do. Yeah, it's getting stupid the last month. Yeah [1548.11] Curry: I did want to pick up me and you had a quick conversation a couple of days ago [1552.83] Curry: And I thought it'd be interesting to to put this out there to our viewers at the moment because it's about the the new [1560.27] Curry: open-source [1561.43] Curry: ESCs [1563.15] Curry: You were talking to a vendor about and that they're starting to talk about getting the very first one out [1568.71] Curry: and I've already forgotten the name of it because I'm [1571.75] Stephen: Got to it was am 32 and it's coming out from sky stars [1577.15] Stephen: yeah, they they tweaked an earlier ESC they had a 55 amp 4m1 and [1584.55] Stephen: They're releasing it with am 32 pre-flashed which is nice because if you flash it yourself you're dealing with kind of [1591.15] Stephen: one mill pads and [1593.31] Stephen: They're not labeled you have to kind of I had to use a continuity checker and run down the pins to figure out which [1601.11] Stephen: was the [1603.59] Stephen: The SWD and SWC pins and then get the ST link to run flash it and that's a pain in the bottom [1611.27] Stephen: It's doable if you're patient and careful, but it's painful. So they're pre flashing these [1617.15] Stephen: It sounds like they're manually pre flashing them and it's seems to be a bit pricey [1624.03] Curry: But as soon as that's on there [1625.47] Curry: You're saying that one of the things you liked about that [1627.67] Curry: I remember is like you just get like a Chrome browser and you can do any changes and stuff to ESCs like that [1633.19] Curry: because I was interested in this because [1636.43] Curry: you were quite excited about it because there's bail heli support on like Linux and [1641.99] Curry: Anything that's not Windows. It's not very good. And my point of view was I'm just not sure [1648.23] Curry: how excited other people would be about it because I think messing around with ESCs is one of the things I [1655.67] Curry: Do the least I might do it on initial start up and it's mainly because all that one needs reversing because you know [1661.63] Curry: You do the lottery about wiring motors up and it's like that one runs the wrong way. I was really interested to know if [1667.67] Curry: People got excited about this because I was like, I mean, it's it's good [1672.31] Curry: There's other things but it's very rare that I'm flying the quad and I think oh man [1676.59] Curry: The CSC is not right unless and this is quite obviously very very wrong. It's not something I fiddle with [1682.31] Curry: What about you guys? [1683.99] Jack: Yeah, well, I run kissed and I and the only [1689.19] Jack: Variation I've had is [1692.87] Stephen: The ones that don't catch fire and the ones that do catch fire, yeah [1697.27] Jack: basically risking my life at the FedEx and [1701.91] Jack: So much so that the I [1705.83] Jack: Was basically building a six-inch quad even though I've only really got [1712.99] Jack: My eB1 6s battery which I've combined to [1721.87] Jack: Combined to [1723.71] Jack: tattoo 3s together [1726.23] Jack: Which is not something I should really be admitting out loud [1731.43] Jack: exciting, but yeah, and [1736.15] Jack: Just haven't really [1738.11] Jack: Got the flight controller for it or another VTX [1742.91] Jack: So it just kind of stopped there. I've got the motors. I've got the [1749.83] Jack: Fenter here see [1752.75] Jack: But yeah, like there's no VTX is out there and [1759.19] Jack: I've got a camera and you know, just trying to get you know, either either by [1766.51] Jack: You know either by a [1770.27] Jack: You know kiss V2 flight controller or you know try and [1776.27] Jack: You know, it's trying to hold out for another [1782.35] Jack: What are they [1783.95] Jack: kiss ultra or fade in that it's like [1787.99] Jack: You know try my luck with the the G3 or whatever the fat tech guys are calling the [1795.07] Jack: you know the [1798.47] Jack: Yeah, G4 flight controller, so yeah, it's just I [1803.31] Jack: Don't know. I don't know. I just kind of [1807.31] Jack: Would I put it on the back burner? [1809.79] Jack: for [1811.11] Stephen: Yeah, I my personal take on this is that BL Heli 32 while it was a step up from BL Heli s [1818.07] Stephen: Hasn't really gone anywhere and a lot of the features like the variable RPM and the by RPM stuff that [1826.07] Stephen: Tried to avoid harmonics those seem to have actually come from a m32 and then be ported over to BL Heli 32 [1833.87] Stephen: So I kind of think that the BL Heli 32 project need to kick up the bottom needs a bit of competition in the marketplace [1840.91] Stephen: You know people are still blowing ESCs [1843.63] Stephen: Current limiting doesn't seem to be delivering and maybe just a bit of competition would [1848.99] Stephen: help people by delivering an ESC that can actually do proper current limiting and [1853.95] Stephen: Could be a bit safer and maybe you know bring on the power a bit smoother [1857.79] Stephen: Just have a little bit of innovation in that space because when you've got one project and that project thinks it's essentially feature complete [1864.67] Stephen: And it's done [1865.87] Stephen: You're not gonna get innovation [1868.87] Curry: Maybe they had a big white board and it said spin motors tick. We're done [1873.75] Curry: It's essentially it isn't it? It's like spin motors, but there's like little subheadings like smoothly. Yeah, so [1880.31] Jack: ESC doesn't explode as yeah, I used to write down. Yeah [1886.11] Jack: It was worrying with was it [1891.03] Jack: Daniel from [1893.43] Jack: Play dementia [1895.59] Jack: Daniel from [1898.51] Jack: Well, what is his name? You know the really short intro [1904.11] Jack: You know [1905.47] Jack: Thanks for watching. Yeah, I think is it [1910.55] Jack: test RC or something I see test flight I think just like that's it and [1916.03] Jack: he was doing the current limiting with the the BL Heli ESCs with the [1922.51] Jack: Snow cat and it just [1929.11] Jack: Didn't really do much. Yeah, it didn't it was just like yeah, you know it it was just I [1937.43] Stephen: Don't know what it was based. I told you to limit the current and it goes command received [1943.23] Stephen: my dad [1947.11] Stephen: What are you doing explodes [1949.19] Stephen: Yeah, so there's a lot of people using a M32 [1954.99] Stephen: From kind of it appears to be two principal camps. You've got the races who fly hard [1960.47] Stephen: Keep the hardware as light as possible and beat the snot out of it [1964.31] Stephen: And you've also got guys who are doing crawlers where they need a very smooth motor startup [1970.19] Stephen: They don't want to spend a lot of money on those sense of motors because they cost an arm and a leg [1974.47] Stephen: so they want smooth sinusoidal startup and they want like [1979.43] Stephen: The ability to control power to the ESC without burning it out [1983.51] Stephen: So if they hit an obstacle to slowly increase the power so you can slowly shove the vehicle over it without suddenly [1991.43] Stephen: spasming and leaping forwards [1993.91] Stephen: So it's kind of the opposite of a quadcopter stall [1996.75] Stephen: Where if you hit something you just want to yoink the power from that before you burn effect [2001.19] Stephen: So that there's a there's a lot of feedback that goes into this all about power control [2006.03] Stephen: It looks like it's on course to produce something that saves the ESC hardware from burning up [2011.03] Curry: I think that's like something that would have been handy when I was doing my very cheap [2016.03] Curry: Electronic skateboard build where my car ESC would go from zero to very fast [2021.39] Curry: Mm-hmm, or just stop which is hard to keep hold of [2025.43] Stephen: Yeah, I think I missed that project. I have to go back and watch that [2030.27] Curry: Included trip to casualty [2033.19] Jack: Oh, yes, fell off didn't you the wife wife panty forever [2040.95] Curry: It was it was I still had reverse [2043.87] Curry: Available on it and I think it went into reverse instead of break immediately. Oh my word [2049.55] Stephen: Skateboard stop me. Keep going. Yeah. Yeah, I think something else they introduced is car mode, which means that you can [2058.19] Stephen: Do this double pull one pull to break and then to pull to reverse [2064.71] Curry: That's yes, it's another thing. There's this one was if you go into neutral [2071.67] Curry: Then when you pull it again, it's reverse as I found out you have to go straight from [2076.71] Curry: Accelerate to break if you let it go to neutral first and then you hit break it goes into reverse [2081.83] Curry: Not last people want to reverse on a skateboard do they it was quite useful because I only didn't know how to skateboard [2088.07] Curry: So every time I sort of came off, I just used to like come back to me. Brilliant. I'll get back on [2093.15] Curry: That was great. I thought this is a good feature until it stopped and I fell off and [2097.67] Curry: Then yeah, it wasn't so good much out [2100.59] Koel: well, that does sound a bit scary if you don't have a smooth, you know stop or or transition because it'll just ejecto skateboard [2109.07] Curry: You're like you'll just you know, but like I said, it was it was built on a budget [2113.71] Curry: If you wanted one of those, I think they were called the de SC's which had a very smooth [2119.11] Curry: Acceleration especially built for skateboards that cost more than the entire skateboard cost to build [2130.55] Stephen: My word you get like an I flight stick ESC a single ESC that does 55 amps to [2138.23] Stephen: Flash am 32 on to that and then you've got something that you know can drive a big stonking motor like that [2148.27] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience [2151.83] Frank: Downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only [2155.23] Frank: Sensors to please the iTunes people hosted on the internet forwarded through to your podcast provider [2160.07] Frank: Downloaded playing on your device and is now playing in your ears all thanks to our patreons [2165.75] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. Find out more at patreon.com [2172.11] Frank: Let's drone out [2173.87] Frank: Well, there's some feet [2177.15] Curry: This is with no prior skateboarding experience. I'm a natural aren't I? [2185.27] Curry: This this is this is like I don't know how to skateboard I'm gonna sit on it [2189.47] Stephen: I noticed that you've got knee pads and elbow pads on which is great because you're right next to the asphalt [2195.03] Curry: It's very safe. Yeah, obviously full safety equipment was yeah full safety equipment [2200.27] Stephen: I don't see your helmet there in case you get a head injury. That's perfect. Yeah, it's wrist pads elbow pads deep and [2207.39] Curry: Again, this is skateboard electric skateboard built on a cheap [2210.79] Curry: The idea was to build it for about I think worked out about a hundred and twenty dollars or something like that all in [2219.03] Jack: Money for the hospital bills [2222.35] Curry: Thank goodness for the free NHS that's back when you can actually go there [2228.31] Stephen: Head along now. Oh, it looks like you're doing okay. They're cruising along. Yeah [2233.47] Curry: Full speed because it was too frightening. Yeah, that's the fall. Thanks, Jack [2240.43] Curry: Horror he's down [2245.87] Koel: Good thing you're wearing pants at least sorry trousers [2251.35] Curry: I was wearing pants as well. But yeah trousers is the term. Yeah, so they should come with a warning [2257.47] Curry: Don't worry. All those those are called freckles [2264.75] Jack: Wonders why the knee up was they did [2269.35] Curry: I've still got a weird lump on that knee and I said is this lump supposed to be here and they're like it's fine [2275.55] Curry: Don't worry about it. Really? And then cuz at last last time I saw [2281.03] Curry: Like a rheumatologist they looked at that knee and said why is that bit sticking out? [2285.15] Curry: I said that was a skateboard injury and they're like didn't they fix it? I said no, they said they didn't need to fix it [2289.51] Curry: She's like that's not right [2292.19] Curry: As I don't worry about it. I'll just add it to another knee operation later on sure to be fine [2298.11] Koel: Yeah, I'm taking a bit of a skateboarding hiatus because the last time I skateboarded about a month ago. I crashed really hard and [2305.63] Koel: Wasn't fun [2311.07] Curry: Yeah, it's not it's not safe [2313.11] Curry: But if I built if I built like a scooter or an e-bike, that's what everyone's done. That's that's no fun at all [2319.27] Jack: Yeah, you need to make the [2323.83] Jack: Rideable you need to make a full size as big as the Tesla. Just take it onto a desk chair [2331.79] Jack: Onto a wheelie a bit dangerous [2334.87] Curry: My daughter has got this old [2337.59] Curry: In a state you'd call them like big wheels where they've got the sort of big wheel at the front [2341.99] Curry: But this is this is called the green machine where you've got you've got these you steer it like this and you can slide out [2347.63] Curry: the the other two wheels so you can drift on it and I've got [2351.59] Curry: do you remember when we went to that hobby King show Jack and [2354.79] Curry: somebody bought the [2356.55] Curry: that ladders [2357.91] Curry: Thing. Yeah, and I've still got that motor that I haven't probably tested which might might work with it [2363.83] Curry: I keep thinking about that as a project, but you know, that's a nice way motor you gotta do something with that [2369.15] Curry: Well, I don't know if it works or not. It was it was in the this doesn't work pile [2373.03] Curry: But who knows with hip copy King what works and what doesn't work? [2378.3] Jack: Yeah, that's a right old union [2381.06] Jack: It's a big I know we got we just it was [2385.18] Jack: Really bizarre those hoey getting events towards the end. It was just like people just handing you stuff and it was just like [2393.3] Jack: Okay [2394.38] Jack: This is yours now [2397.38] Curry: Let's see what we can do with it still with that. It's got [2400.74] Curry: These things have sat there for ages. The other thing I've got is that ESC. Do you remember the ESC as well? [2405.38] Curry: Which is just ridiculous? [2407.3] Curry: This is the biggest you see you've ever seen imagine putting these on a quad [2412.14] Curry: Okay [2414.74] Curry: Holy [2416.26] Curry: It's a massive [2419.54] Curry: 200 all the capacitors on the back could kill you should certainly [2422.66] Curry: At least what voltage is that? I don't know. It's got all of it [2427.34] Curry: So we've already got two lots of of very thick battery cables plus this well mark thing [2433.46] Curry: I think yeah, it goes up to lots [2437.02] Curry: looks scary [2440.5] Jack: I'm thinking about building a [2445.78] Jack: Slug shocker to keep the slugs off my oh, yeah, we've got one of those [2452.7] Jack: Yeah [2455.22] Stephen: We used a 9-volt battery and that was enough to put them off [2458.06] Stephen: They were actually fizzing when they crawled over it. We used a bunch of a copper tape around [2464.02] Stephen: Got a flower pot cut the plastic flower pot cut the bottom off and then two [2469.14] Stephen: Two rings of copper tape and then put the terminals onto those two rings of copper tape [2476.02] Stephen: Actually taught L to solder doing this and she soldered the wires onto it [2479.82] Stephen: And then there's like a 9-volt battery that goes on to that and um, yeah [2482.9] Stephen: It was enough to make the slugs fizz when they bridged it so they didn't like that [2486.98] Stephen: But it didn't batteries didn't last very long which was a problem [2491.14] Koel: So are you very against slugs then is that? [2495.06] Stephen: Well, if you're trying to grow peas or something in your garden and the slugs just shred the entire plant before it gets a foot tall [2501.9] Jack: That's kind of annoying. Yeah [2504.5] Jack: Yeah, they're really starting to piss me off, but I'm thinking about using 240 volts [2510.42] Jack: I [2511.94] Stephen: Think you might end up with some kind of RCD sort of I think you're your distribution board would probably go [2519.06] Stephen: No, or consumer unit as we should call it in domestic premises. Thank you. It probably check [2524.66] Jack: Or do that horrendous thing, which I will disclaimer [2529.58] Jack: Hang on [2531.1] Jack: Let me legal advice any views [2534.94] Jack: Expressed by any guests in the show personal. I may not reflect the views of others [2539.82] Jack: I mean the [2543.58] Jack: Don't be on fire [2545.98] Jack: Yeah, be careful around busy roads. Do not take our advice. Have you seen the guy who? [2551.78] Jack: Gets the 9-volt batteries and staggers them to ridiculous voltage [2556.74] Jack: And does the massive arcs? I'm tempted on doing that [2561.46] Curry: hmm [2562.7] Stephen: we tried glasses of beer and things before you ask because of the the obvious solutions and [2568.06] Stephen: Little pellets that were supposedly dry the ground up because slugs don't like to crawl over dry things [2573.9] Stephen: Nothing really worked hence going so far as to create our own slugged electrocution device [2579.1] Stephen: Which which worked briefly, but obviously the batteries don't last forever. I'm not sure about Jack's idea of using main soltager [2585.9] Stephen: Suggest maybe something a bit safer like some old lipo packs probably were [2592.58] Stephen: They'd last longer [2594.9] Koel: Here I'm let's draw now where you can learn to kill slugs [2600.58] Curry: You'll have like piles of cats and dogs around and like horses and things as well [2607.1] Stephen: So slugs are wet right not many creatures are wet [2610.42] Stephen: So when they bridge they crawl up one and then they reach the next one then they start to get electrocuted [2616.3] Stephen: And they just arc back and they move away [2618.34] Stephen: They don't die, but if they try and crawl over both of them, then they experience a lot of discomfort [2624.66] Curry: So is this 300 batteries in series? [2628.1] Curry: Yeah [2630.86] Jack: Do not have to follow this do not do it don't even think about doing it [2636.98] Stephen: The most awkward way to make raisins from grapes or something. What's he trying to do here? [2641.82] Stephen: He's got two nails in a grape and like 300 batteries and the nail flies out of the grape [2647.22] Jack: I think I think he had to remove a lot of the spiciness of this [2654.9] Jack: Cuz I remember it being way more [2657.98] Jack: Way more scary [2660.42] Stephen: Speaking of odd videos. Did anyone watch the video where they they slapped a chicken to cook it? [2667.46] Curry: Yes, I've seen that come up in my list of two watches, but I haven't seen it quite interesting. This is interesting [2674.9] Jack: Yeah, like proper plasma horribleness [2679.26] Jack: But you know, I think it's on way doing it [2682.9] Stephen: hmm [2684.42] Stephen: Crazy so things you can do when you can't go out and fly [2688.74] Stephen: I think we're going a bit weird [2691.74] Jack: Wasn't cricket FPV anodizing titanium bolts [2696.46] Jack: Doesn't that I know I seen like anodizing [2700.78] Jack: Aluminium but not titanium. I [2704.42] Stephen: thought [2705.98] Stephen: anodizing only works on aluminium because you're basically creating a much [2711.94] Stephen: Much greater surface area, right? [2714.58] Stephen: so when you anodize aluminium [2716.18] Stephen: You create this corroded layer on the outside and the corrosion has like more ridges in it [2722.62] Stephen: And so the extra ridges increase the surface area and that allows it to like take in dye and paint much better than naked [2730.74] Stephen: aluminium does [2733.22] Jack: Mmm, I'm still very upset that you can't anodize things to be the color white [2740.18] Jack: Particles down on [2742.22] Jack: Yeah, I thought we would have figured something out by now, but I suppose that's what powder coatings for [2748.5] Jack: Yeah, yeah powder coatings arguably more straightforward just get a spray can move on with your life [2756.65] Jack: It was the different voltages that gave various colors. Yeah or time [2763.01] Stephen: Either one right? I think that's how it works [2766.05] Stephen: I'm not they're not the same type of anodizing that you do with aluminium where you actually do like a dye layer afterwards [2771.53] Stephen: But you're actually using the voltage to change the color [2774.41] Jack: Yeah [2775.81] Jack: That's what it sounds like [2778.77] Jack: Taylor's been talking about [2782.53] Jack: Have you got anything else lined up curry anything else come in the door for review [2788.93] Curry: No one video I'm just gonna finish off [2791.89] Curry: maybe tomorrow is at the same time when I was flying with the commando and [2797.89] Curry: That larger quad is I put the run cam thumb on [2803.21] Curry: On a quad to test out. I've got it there. Hang on. I'll show it to you [2808.17] Stephen: Oh, yeah, gyro flow is hot right now. I noticed there's a x light 2 that's come out [2817.42] Curry: What's the noise about this week what I did. I like to test things as they come to me [2822.4] Curry: Without watching other people's stuff about it. So I took one of the mounts [2826.48] Curry: That came in the run cam pack. I put it on a very smooth flying 5-inch quad [2833.4] Curry: And I took it out and I flew it around and I used the it came with like a little ND filter [2839.12] Curry: I thought that's gonna help put that on and the footage from it is absolutely shockingly bad [2845.24] Curry: basically, it's it's all shaky and [2848.8] Curry: Horrific and so I put it through gyro flow and gyro flow doesn't fix shaky [2854.48] Curry: wobbly jello vision [2856.88] Curry: And so it's kind of the case that oh you have to soft mount them and don't use that mount because that man's rubbish [2862.56] Curry: Which is like I? [2864.56] Curry: So I wanted I was gonna do some more in it, but I thought you know what? [2867.4] Curry: I don't know when I'm gonna get flying again. Let's um, let's put a video out because this is this is my first pass [2872.6] Curry: It's like I bought this from run cam. I tested it just as it came and it's absolutely hopeless [2879.36] Curry: So it might be the fact, you know, you can mount it better [2883.76] Curry: Do you remember in the olden days? [2885.2] Curry: We all used to use you'd get bit packing foam and you like all this [2888.68] Curry: This is just the right density for popping on the quad and then putting your session on top of it and putting a strap around [2894.72] Curry: Just to dampen down those wobbles. That was the way to do it. So it seems like you have to go back to the old days [2900.8] Curry: the problem is with that I think is [2904.28] Curry: Run cat well, this is my opinion at least run cam sort of proposition [2908.12] Curry: This is like oh, it's a cheap camera and it generates gyro data. So it's like it's brilliant. I thought oh, this would be great because people [2915.84] Curry: That are sort of starting out or they're not confident enough to put an expensive GoPro on that can use that [2921.76] Curry: But in order to get it smooth enough, you're basically either investing a huge amount of effort in [2929.64] Curry: Both dampening and tuning and then doing all this stuff and that sort of takes away the beginner aspect [2935.68] Curry: It's like so if you've if you've done lots of flying before you're probably okay and you can do this anyway [2939.96] Curry: But if you've done lots of flying before [2941.96] Curry: Just you have a GoPro on it and it it'll just be smooth out the box. So it's kind of [2947.12] Curry: Don't know at the moment, but I'll do some more with it [2950.96] Curry: But yeah, that's that I'm revealing now you won't have to watch my video [2954.44] Stephen: You've freed yourself and have a two things that run camera being a bit cheeky there because they did something that recorded gyro [2960.56] Stephen: Jata, but by all standards that image quality is atrocious. I [2966.6] Curry: Think the image quality is fine as long as you don't move [2972.2] Curry: As if you the best footage I've had from it is when I'm just looking at it like that saying is the light on [2977.92] Curry: After that point it's all it's a bit like I don't know if you started flying at this point Steve [2983.16] Curry: But when you were using the a 8 cams or even the Mobius and stuff like that if you didn't have those [2991.28] Curry: Really soft mounted you'd get this shake that you just couldn't take away and you couldn't smooth out by anything [2998.2] Stephen: It's it's one of the old a lack of mass in the camera mount where it just needs more material to give it rigidity [3005.24] Curry: What the I don't know if you want it rigid or you want it to dampen more [3010.2] Curry: But you know most of the modern cameras have some sort of electronic image stabilization as well as as doing a like in the camera [3018.92] Curry: Stabilization so that just doesn't have anything. It doesn't have any fancy electronics [3023.0] Curry: I think it's just relying on the fact that saying look we can generate [3026.96] Curry: Gyro data of it and you can put it into this program, but that program cannot take out these little tiny wobbles [3033.6] Curry: I'm sure if you were doing this [3036.64] Curry: Big movements, it would be great. But if when it's like that vibration is just constantly doing this it can't touch that [3045.0] Stephen: That's why I was wondering if they're being a bit cheeky because they're kind of relying on the gyro feature [3051.04] Stephen: Where they really should have a decent camera to start with and then add gyro on top of it instead of saying well [3057.68] Stephen: The footage is a bit crap. But if you run gyro flow you can make it bearable. I [3063.92] Curry: Think so. I mean you can get good footage out of it [3066.16] Curry: I talked to after I tried it out and I did my sort of independent thing. I talked to Andy Andy RC about it and [3073.16] Curry: He said he spent so long in gyro flow [3077.0] Curry: Getting even more points that it would suggest and and doing all sorts of experimentations [3082.44] Curry: But he had from the get-go a fairly smooth quad because he already went and did the soft mounting of it and stuff [3090.44] Curry: Then the soft mounting is like ridiculously soft like you can sort of squish it about all over sort of thing [3096.4] Curry: But what it's what it's not because what you want all cameras to be essentially is just you pop it on your quad [3103.24] Curry: You plug the battery in and it's good to go and it's definitely not that [3107.6] Curry: It's and you can't you got to work for your money. It's the problem [3112.0] Stephen: You're getting a fit you're getting a 50-quid camera [3114.32] Stephen: But you have to put in an extra 40 quids worth of your time to make it usable [3119.76] Curry: Yeah, yeah, and like the the difference is I you know, I stuck my my older GoPro 7 on that [3126.8] Curry: Tamira 7 and didn't do anything and that's like butter smooth [3131.6] Curry: This thing is on a smooth quad [3133.72] Curry: I look at my DVR footage and it's like perfect and I look at the [3137.76] Curry: HD footage and it's like, you know, someone's got a hold of it. It's just gonna kill you all the way around which is not fun [3144.96] Jack: Yeah, we need to get away from [3147.32] Jack: Constantly giving good GoPro our money because it's clear that they know yes. I [3152.88] Curry: Think the trouble is that GoPro have that patent on in-camera stabilization [3157.4] Curry: So anybody else that does it GoPro is going to come off the big e is an OIS and not GoPro patents like that's [3166.44] Stephen: That's available elsewhere [3168.44] Koel: Well, I guess the super views are they painted hyper smooth [3172.28] Curry: They're painting their particular method of doing in camera [3176.56] Curry: Stabilization is is a patent which they will defend rigorously [3181.92] Stephen: So [3183.76] Stephen: Insta 360 does it after market and that's how they get around that and gyro flow does it after market and that's how it works [3190.52] Curry: It's the in-camera part that they've gone [3193.6] Stephen: I've also been reading this because I like to keep up to speed on the reviews and I saw that [3199.36] Stephen: Firefly have released a couple of products and it looks like there's [3204.36] Stephen: There's we're starting to see cameras that used to be split cameras now being marketed as gyro flow capable [3210.4] Stephen: They've had the ability to record gyro data and evidently there's either an IMU that was already there and unused or they've had an IMU [3219.6] Stephen: And it looks like they've produced some stuff that seems to work a bit better than the thumb [3224.56] Stephen: There's a [3225.88] Stephen: Firefly split that they've put in a 3d printed case and there's something they're calling an X light [3232.0] Stephen: Which is kind of an action camera size thing. It's about the size of a naked GoPro [3238.16] Stephen: That seems okay, but the run cam thumb was the first one that arrived on the scene [3243.12] Stephen: Designed for gyro flow and it feels like is the worst [3247.08] Stephen: unfortunately, I [3248.92] Koel: Think so. I tried I mean [3252.96] Curry: I was just gonna say Caroline was mentioned the Cadax peanut if you've looked at some of Caroline's [3258.36] Curry: wing footage flying that [3260.8] Curry: That it smooths it out to such a perfect extent. It looks like she's flying the perfect wing flight [3266.48] Curry: Yeah, even though the in-camera stuff of the DVR was kind of you know, well, you know how wings are they both [3272.72] Curry: Bobble them out in the wind but again, that's that's more money and it's I think that's the message you can get really good footage [3280.0] Curry: You just can't get it on the cheap [3283.28] Stephen: Into it is over 200 pounds and we're talking about the run cam being 50 quid the Hawkeye [3289.64] Stephen: I was looking at so the split version there's a split camera in a little 3d printed box [3296.48] Stephen: that's going for [3298.76] Stephen: $72 so about 50 quid and [3301.64] Stephen: The slightly fancier full-blown action camera version is a hundred and fifty dollars [3307.52] Stephen: so a hundred and fifty dollars versus [3310.64] Stephen: 215 pounds on the peanut it's it's not really a fair comparison one is very much a budget version of the other [3317.0] Stephen: It's almost a almost twice the price to go for the Cadax peanut [3321.56] Stephen: compared to these [3322.96] Stephen: Even the most expensive version of them. I suppose yes is the footage twice as good [3328.2] Stephen: Yeah, that's what you've got to ask right? Yeah, it's definitely more convenient to use the Cadax peanut [3333.16] Stephen: You just press go and you don't have to worry. What is this? [3336.16] Stephen: You've got to sync up your footage to the gyro data jump for a few hoops. Maybe you run that [3341.12] Stephen: run the [3342.56] Stephen: Stabilization process a couple of times to make sure the results are spot-on. I [3346.68] Stephen: Guess it's just where do you want to spend the money? Would you want to? [3350.04] Stephen: The ultimate thing is you you spend 300 quid or more on a GoPro and it's just perfect [3355.76] Stephen: Or you spend a little less on a peanut and there's some compromises or you spend a bit less on [3360.96] Stephen: A gyro flow cape or camera and you know, you have to put in a bit of graft yourself [3366.36] Stephen: But you end up with some nice footage perhaps [3369.84] Koel: Yeah, I've seen some really good results from like the Insta 360 go to and the peanut as far as just in camera stabilization [3376.92] Koel: It's that in camera stabilization mixed with the super crazy wide view just you know, it's just so smooth [3385.04] Stephen: They do top out at lower resolution. So I think the peanuts only a 1440p camera. Yeah. Yep [3393.08] Koel: Surprisingly, they're good in low light though. I've seen some pretty good low light, you know examples from it [3399.2] Koel: Which for such a small sensor in a small camera. It's pretty surprising [3403.24] Stephen: Yeah, it feels like that whole wide dynamic range HDR thing is a kind of a discussion of five years ago [3410.28] Stephen: Most of the cameras most of them do a decent job of it [3413.56] Stephen: That was an area where the run cam thumb didn't impress me though seeing the filming in typical British conditions [3420.12] Stephen: Which is crap lighting loads of cloud. It looked a bit sun just above your eye level if it's there, right? [3427.8] Stephen: What's impressive? [3430.0] Koel: Yeah, I mean I surprisingly [3432.56] Koel: Sometimes I actually like the look or the the quality that comes out of the run cam 5 orange over the session 5 [3438.92] Koel: If the GoPro session alive, yes [3442.08] Koel: The the session has a wider field of view and super view [3445.4] Koel: But I don't know I feel like the run cam 5 orange handles exposure better than the GoPro for some reason [3451.52] Koel: But it is quite a bit newer. So it probably has a better, you know image processor or something in it that [3457.24] Koel: Can sort of copy, you know compute those things way faster [3461.12] Stephen: So right that run come 5 orange also gyro flow capable [3465.2] Stephen: But apparently it stutters like crazy if you try and record gyro data, so it's a [3470.8] Stephen: problematic unfortunately, I [3472.92] Koel: Mean, I I haven't really had any issues with stuttering like because it spits out the gyro data after every clip whatever on the SD card [3480.68] Koel: but I don't know I it just it takes a lot of tinkering to get the [3485.04] Koel: With what gyro flow takes a lot of tinkering basically, you know matter what right? So it's right. Yeah [3491.84] Jack: Should we call it there? Is that all we've got time for I don't know [3498.61] Curry: Everyone's homework is to go and fly [3500.97] Jack: Yeah, I know [3502.81] Jack: Yeah, well once I get code burn and put back together [3507.93] Koel: Looks like a lot of people are saying they actually yeah, they kind of agree that they like the footage from the run cam 5 [3512.77] Koel: Orange over the session [3515.81] Stephen: I almost bought that a couple of years ago. Just never quite pulled the trigger on it [3519.93] Jack: Yeah, and what we worth doing [3523.98] Jack: But who knows? [3526.42] Jack: Thank you. You've been listening to let's throw now [3529.74] Jack: We are a show that hasn't got any [3534.82] Jack: Adverts or any of the horrible, you know [3539.9] Jack: We are supported by you are wonderful patreons.
