Thank you to call us campus art folk now Sam Dharma on with the show [20.28] Curry: Hello once again, we are here. It's LDO episode [56.34] Curry: 356 we're still going and we're joined it tonight by [60.58] Curry: Steve over here. Hello everyone. Hello our lovely patreons and down in the bottom is the tone star. Hello [68.9] Curry: I am everyone's favorite curry kitten except people still haven't showed up. So clearly not everyone's favorite and [75.78] Curry: Well, what's been happening this week and I have to say like my excuse I was away and I wasn't here in [83.3] Curry: In Barcelona, but interestingly two things I should mention about being in Barcelona is firstly [90.46] Curry: Either everybody was just riding electric scooters illegally or they have a very permissive law [96.58] Curry: like so many e scooters and [99.98] Curry: e skateboards really whizzing along in dedicated bike lanes, but [104.34] Curry: More interesting you remember last week. I talked about sort of meeting a Karen who decided to ask who? [110.18] Curry: Who allowed me to fly in the field and wanted names? Yeah, we were doing a segue tour around Barcelona [116.74] Curry: Which was good fun, and I didn't fall off or anything and they go pretty fast when you get going [122.54] Curry: When we were all stood there in one of these areas and he was showing us this building by this arctic at Gowdy if you know [128.1] Curry: The stuff some Spanish women came up very smiley said something in Spanish [133.86] Curry: and he talked back to her and said stuff and [137.86] Curry: And I said like oh did she answer a girl or something and and he's like no [142.82] Curry: She said to me a very he made a point of saying how smiley she was and pretend he's be nice about [149.14] Curry: on [150.58] Curry: Segue is illegal in Barcelona [152.58] Curry: And then as he was telling us this we saw her there with a phone taking pictures of them like she was gonna report [158.26] Curry: So we met a Spanish Karen who basically tried to stop us having fun [162.58] Curry: They're everywhere. That's my Barcelona story. They're everywhere. They're not just here. They get around [167.86] Tony: They're everywhere [169.62] Curry: So what have you guys been up to? [172.14] Curry: What's going on? [174.42] Stephen: Steve oh [176.82] Stephen: Right, I built a very very small quad [180.54] Tony: another one [182.58] Stephen: Yeah, another one. This was from an Instagram guy. You may have heard of him sub 250 gram fbv [189.18] Stephen: And he produced this cute little quad. It's the only one I know that's designed for a 10 by 10 mil camera [195.82] Stephen: But that isn't even a nano camera in the front. That is a run cam atom, which is 10 mil by 10 mil [201.5] Stephen: It's ludicrously small. The picture is tolerable. It's better than the old cad x ones [205.82] Stephen: But yeah, two-inch props on 11 oh twos [209.02] Stephen: And I've also got some ridiculously small bright orange, which I highly approve of bright orange batteries 10 0 2 [217.14] Stephen: 10 0 2 motors, which is from the turtle frame. Is that what it's called? [222.22] Stephen: I think this is a nameless one. It's from this Instagram guy who builds kind of [229.22] Stephen: Ultra light quads and he spends a lot of time stripping them down [232.62] Stephen: Saving every every gram and putting his larger motor and batteries he can get on there with everything else [237.9] Stephen: So we fly in 2s on that extra light 2s. Yeah, most people were doing 1s, but I thought that was a bit dull [244.14] Stephen: so I got this [246.14] Stephen: Happy model x12 board. It's got a 400 milliwatt VTX on there believe it or not and it seems to go [251.98] Stephen: I've got a little omni on there and [254.94] Stephen: That the four ESEs 12 amp rated 1 to 2s and an express LRS little ceramic antenna on there [261.22] Stephen: So you get quite a lot the motors were only pulling a ludicrously low amount of amps [266.86] Stephen: So yeah, 2s works pretty well [270.7] Curry: the reason I mentioned that frame is [273.18] Curry: I've also seen posts from him and he sent me a link to the video of [277.66] Curry: I don't know if he makes the frames or makes the whole things this turtle thing and it was flying on 1s [282.62] Curry: But it looked very much [285.3] Curry: Like it was flying on 2s or more because it it was doing things [290.34] Curry: You know whoops always a little bit a little bit gutless when you know [294.38] Curry: You want to do this sort of the you want to do it? [296.26] Curry: I'm gonna crash now and yeah, yeah, you just don't have the room especially side [301.46] Curry: But that look that look really impressive. It looked like he'd [304.26] Curry: Put the weight at a state. So like the power to weight ratio was really really good [309.7] Curry: That'd be interesting [310.94] Stephen: He's designed it so it's really lean like it looks like a much bigger quad [315.42] Tony: But only because he's used a really tiny camera. Can you bring that on them Saturday? I'd like to look at them [321.38] Stephen: Yeah, I'll bring it along and it gets about four and a half to five minutes on a 300 ma 2s [327.3] Stephen: Pretty nicely. So yeah very low stack height and he's just he's made [332.14] Stephen: Just all the decisions based around this specific tiny camera so you can only use the 10 by 10 camera [338.1] Stephen: But once you've done that you've got I think this is 34 grams and I've still got the JST plugs for the motors on there [344.34] Stephen: So I could probably shave a bit and with going from 11 or twos [347.98] Stephen: Which these are right now down to 10 or twos should take 2.8 grams off it [352.78] Stephen: So I'll give that a shot and see if that improves performance [355.86] Stephen: But yeah, it's a nice little park flyer [357.82] Stephen: And obviously when you're flying something like this around you can just just mess around near park benches and stuff [363.42] Stephen: You don't need a ton of space and it's still been used to pull itself out of dives and that's all right [368.66] Curry: All the audio get is saying the cam is really bad though [371.82] Curry: Is it is it bad or is it all right because a normal your normal Nano's 14 mil, isn't it? [375.78] Curry: So they've shrunk it down [377.66] Stephen: Significantly from that. Yeah, it's not a top of the range, but I've still got things like [383.16] Stephen: Cadex turbos and Cadex EOS 2s, and it's better than those it's better than the old Cadex [390.48] Stephen: Nano cameras, I'd say it might not be up there with the best of the latest small cameras [395.1] Stephen: But compared to cameras of two or three years ago, it is perfectly adequate [399.6] Curry: So, you know if it shows you a picture and everything doesn't go dark. There's a bit of sunlight out, then you know, it's good enough [406.24] Stephen: Right. Yeah, there's a good amount of contrast [408.28] Stephen: I was flying it yesterday and people in the UK would probably know it's a blazing hot day [412.64] Stephen: so I threw kind of flew three packs through it there and [416.16] Stephen: Yeah, got pretty good results. But that was the best conditions one can expect to have my only beef with it so far is [422.36] Stephen: These HQ by blades which are like 50 mil by blades really lightweight two-inch props some ludicrously small pitch [430.0] Stephen: and that gives it a long flight time, but they're designed to push fit and [435.16] Stephen: They don't push far enough down to actually allow that the the spindle of the motor [441.88] Stephen: To actually go into the prop they sit on there like some kind of like hat perched on top. There's maybe [449.32] Stephen: four mil between the actual [452.64] Stephen: rotor [454.36] Stephen: between the bell and the prop and [457.6] Stephen: That's just asking for some sort of snapping action on the on the motor. I think so [464.68] Stephen: drill and drill them all the way through if [467.68] Curry: There's one thing I dislike about small quads. It's the idea of push fitting props because yeah [474.6] Curry: Something's gonna go wrong there at some point [476.8] Curry: I mean I've gone out with an old quad that I haven't flown for a while with push fits and I've gone [481.52] Curry: Let's go and I was I remember I was filming it with my GoPro and I played it back and you just see it [487.36] Curry: Turned into a prop launcher. They go [490.56] Curry: The quad sister [493.04] Stephen: This one is on the other end of this scale where you can't really move them once you've got them on you better be sure [497.8] Tony: You've got them right way around and you've got yeah, I used to glue mine on just tiny bit of super glue [503.8] Stephen: Yeah, yeah, I've done [506.44] Tony: Actually to s400 ma. It was a Dan Upton special. It was one of our friends in Brian design and made it and [514.44] Tony: Brilliant little thing. It used to fly fantastic [517.48] Tony: Where'd it go? [519.72] Tony: Something broke on it and you know me it blew tack on there. It's too heavy [527.76] Stephen: So you've been doing something on the other end of the scale I gather Tony right I've been playing with the smallest possible motors known [534.36] Stephen: To mankind you're slightly larger, right? Yes [538.56] Tony: We've got you know, we went over to [541.28] Tony: Fossils HQ a couple of Thursdays ago when I had to dodge the show [546.64] Tony: We've got it working [550.04] Tony: and then [552.04] Tony: We put it all together and then armed it and it armed but we didn't [557.32] Tony: Give it to any beans on the throttle [560.56] Tony: So we thought it was fine. Come on and we were like well nothing happens [565.04] Tony: And so and then the FC caught fire that blew up [569.68] Tony: Luckily Danny boy had saved my pins and all my settings and then we went up the field offline field and [580.24] Tony: Put everything back together new FC which Clive in the chat sent to fossil and fossil sent to me. Thanks Clive [589.0] Tony: Which was an old CL [591.32] Tony: CLS racing I believe which was what I had in there and and [595.8] Tony: And so we put everything back three five seven old firmware all my pits are all back on it and [605.76] Tony: Went I'm so nervous because I'm flown [609.92] Tony: I don't know. September was probably the last time actually flown the X-Files [615.68] Tony: Stuck it miles away from us ran back [619.28] Tony: Tony put it on and [621.8] Tony: Everything spun up right and I went go flip the floor and it went [628.0] Tony: It literally flipped because we were thinking about strapping it down [634.48] Tony: because if you get the [637.72] Stephen: God here we go. Let's you're gonna need a hell of a bungee to strap down the next class on you [642.28] Tony: Well, we we when we done Danny's when he was having problems because it was it would just soon as you arm [648.56] Tony: It would just start going [652.28] Tony: Run away detail and we put props on it and we literally ratchet straps at the table to do it [660.0] Tony: Yeah, it's so anyway it completely flipped got back to beat your flight, which we haven't been on for so long [666.92] Tony: I haven't actually turned be wrong beat fly on for two years [670.8] Tony: So that's that's how long it's been since I've done a build or anything on it [675.28] Tony: And realized the board alignment was wrong [677.92] Tony: So [679.24] Tony: we managed to get it right and [681.56] Tony: I've only flew it for maybe 30 seconds, but it felt it felt like the old one. It felt good [687.48] Tony: So being you get the throttle up high. No, I flipped it a few times and that was it [692.76] Tony: So really the test is gonna pay on Saturday. I mean, I might be out for now Friday evening [700.6] Stephen: Well, it'll be good for the audience either way [703.46] Tony: Hopefully not cuz I just I don't want to take it apart again [709.42] Tony: It's maybe you should upgrade [719.98] Curry: Sounds more like you need to fireproof everything because the last two flights from it seems to have included the words fire [727.3] Tony: Don't normally go on [729.3] Tony: For three years until it caught fire. That's pretty good. It's gone to Texas [733.5] Tony: It's you know [734.54] Tony: He's been in a suitcase in a bottom of a plane and flying around Texas and come back and been to [741.02] Tony: events [742.78] Tony: Yeah, so it's done. It's done. They've done well [748.46] Tony: Yeah, and I've got no money for batteries so if anyone want to give me some batteries on Saturday [754.06] Tony: That'll be good. You're saying two minutes two minutes. That's not a lot is it? [758.6] Tony: No, that's that's two. I've got two four s [763.16] Tony: 3000s together, so it's only three thousand million hour. Yeah [768.04] Tony: and if you'll [769.8] Tony: You know cranking it out and find love [773.28] Stephen: Yeah, consider running that sort of lipo on my seven-inch like eight s three thousand [778.84] Stephen: So yeah on what that 14 inch props [784.6] Tony: Yeah, but yeah [786.6] Tony: So anyway [789.8] Tony: It might fly Saturday [792.8] Tony: If not, there's other guys going who've got X-class his mind's got a new design. He's taking his up [798.4] Tony: He's other ones flying and I think it's he's on 12 s with that [803.52] Stephen: It's getting sorted with some kind of lipo sponsor. Don't we? Oh, that would be nice [809.16] Curry: That would be you'd have to fly it more to actually get a sponsor [813.16] Curry: Some batteries are just gonna keep in the cupboard. Yeah [817.36] Curry: Keep my van sometimes [819.48] Curry: So as you've alluded to going somewhere on Saturday, this is obviously two wings and wheels. Yes [825.08] Curry: Now you two are going at what you're taking and who else is going in the chat. I see some people talking about it [830.36] Curry: I think a couple people are hopefully Frank's gonna turn [833.52] Tony: turn up [835.04] Tony: Cives definitely going from the chat. Who else is going my mate Ryan from last year whose games he's going [842.28] Tony: So I'm yeah, I'm literally waiting for Danny to help me at 9 p.m. Put my um [848.48] Tony: Put the tent on the top of my vein [850.84] Stephen: Normally, so my only question is kind of what can I take? I don't have an X-class [856.68] Stephen: So I'm not going to be racing X-class got a couple of five inch [859.52] Stephen: But I've got a ton of little micros if there's any space for messing around with my crows [866.32] Tony: I think I might let you in the tent because there's a tiny whooping in the tent [872.56] Tony: And they'd normally do it all day and I think you'd probably be out [876.84] Tony: So yeah, can I have a go and maybe even fly in the evening when everyone's finished? [882.64] Tony: As long as you're on. Yeah [885.44] Tony: Whatever [886.44] Stephen: Andrew slash Frank was talking about night flying which I wasn't aware about but sounds like that's gonna be a thing, right? [893.88] Tony: Yeah, there's normally so much going on. Um [896.8] Tony: And so yeah, I think you'll you'll be fine to do it. I think you've got to [903.4] Tony: Make sure you have BMFA, you know, some kind of insurance as well that you can FBV UK [911.6] Tony: Probably be all right [913.6] Tony: Hopefully, I know when you race you've gotta have BMFA [918.16] Stephen: Alright, I am NOT BMFA. I keep thinking about BMFA [922.5] Stephen: but the fields are quite far from where I live and [928.14] Stephen: Yeah, there's just a lot of regs they technically to fly [932.38] Stephen: A multi rotor. They want me to pass a commercial test [937.7] Stephen: Unless there's someone supervising me which just like what why would I go to a field if I need a commercial? [944.94] Stephen: Tests they want one of the commercial pilot certifications to fly a quad [949.86] Stephen: But you can fly a wing just with the regular BMFA stuff [953.14] Stephen: And they said they'd look into some of the the racing and FPV sets [956.66] Stephen: but I don't want to go get a commercial search just so I can fly in that field and pay a hundred quid to do the [963.02] Curry: Undercut a year to stand in that field. That's the problem house probably is that they they will follow the [969.34] Curry: Purely legal thing about you must always have a spotter with you [973.18] Curry: Which is that's probably your supervision point of view [976.42] Curry: Which has moved on very slightly to you must have some with a buddy box, I guess but [982.38] Curry: No, I've never been a joiner for these things. Plus [985.78] Curry: Despite me flying in fields a lot. I do like to have the option of just you know going where I want to go [992.02] Curry: And just getting on with it. I guess I think yeah [997.92] Tony: as Clive says in the chat the wing guys are going I think there's wing racing Saturday and Sunday as well and [1004.32] Tony: I think they're doing some night flying [1006.68] Tony: with their wings [1009.04] Tony: Plus there's so much going on in day like we'd probably shove down the end the quad bit [1015.4] Tony: And there's there be checks and all sorts there all day [1020.56] Tony: flying and then in the evening, I mean, I'm taking RC buggies and [1026.16] Tony: Rip, you know, take me I'll see cars and stuff. So they'll be all over that [1031.08] Stephen: Yeah, I should probably have dug that out. Unfortunately my RC car stuff is shredded right now. I [1039.64] Stephen: Discovered what goes wrong. If you try and go too fast with an RC car [1043.16] Stephen: I'm like a quad where you just hit something and replace a prop with an RC car [1046.6] Stephen: You hit something and the drivetrain gets completely polished smooth and you have to take the whole thing apart [1052.92] Curry: Got all them cogs in it. They get a bit stripped. Yeah, they do strip a lot stripped [1058.56] Tony: Yeah, I tried 3s in my one [1061.18] Tony: I've got given the other day and it just the the back was trying to overtake the front all the time [1065.86] Tony: So I was like, okay, I'll go back to 2s because this is stupid [1069.68] Tony: It was literally this twitch it all the way up the road. You [1074.04] Tony: Probably all right. Yeah. Yeah on grass. I think it would have been fine. But one road it was just like [1082.52] Curry: So the question Stephen is will you be taking a money or credit card with you [1088.08] Curry: And do we need to dedicate an entire episode to this is what Stephen bought at wings and wheels last week? [1093.72] Curry: I think I've got enough stuff right now. Yeah, you say that but it's like, oh, yeah this week [1099.94] Curry: I bought and then a big list appears of stuff saying a bit like that lately a little bit carried away [1107.72] Stephen: Yes, so far so good I've been sensible the only thing I've bought recently is a new [1114.36] Stephen: FC and ESC stack just in case I want to rebuild my old 4-inch because I've got a pin connected [1121.76] Stephen: HGLRC stack and every time something I think it flies nicely for 30 seconds [1127.32] Stephen: And then there's a wobble and I think the pins loose connection between the FC and ESC it just goes crazy [1134.08] Stephen: Like it'll get stuck on a throttle value not like one of those oscillation, you know runaway [1140.54] Stephen: D-term stuck on the high throttle, but no like it'll just [1144.82] Stephen: Be off in its own world. You can't do anything to it [1148.78] Stephen: And so I've given up on pin connected stuff and I was gonna replace it with a new proper f7 [1157.02] Stephen: with with a cable [1158.86] Curry: There's something that randomly sticks on a throttle and doesn't want to move is not something I'd really like to fly ever [1165.5] Stephen: Yeah, I keep seeing them recommended to newbies [1170.02] Stephen: flight stacks where you've got a pin like an [1173.54] Stephen: Typically a kind of a five by two row of pins on the FC and one block goes down to the ESC [1179.62] Stephen: And there's another one on the top that goes up to the VTX [1183.42] Stephen: It's just asking for trouble. Like all you need to do is tap on them and you'd knock the pins off [1188.98] Curry: Yeah, the problem with those ones is that means you're literally [1193.38] Curry: On that yeah, you're locked an ecosystem [1195.88] Curry: It's like you have to get this with this with this as opposed to just being able to swap a single component out [1201.44] Curry: Which is less useful. I think [1203.84] Stephen: People I've noticed recently there was there was some talk with I think acorn and others about you know [1209.52] Stephen: Getting the pin out agreed on for SCs and ESCs and you have to get yeah [1214.04] Stephen: Because some kind of universal agreement for the pin out. It's all very well and good, but I think [1219.16] Stephen: If you're not sure about what pin does what connecting those you're probably gonna walk into some problems [1225.84] Stephen: Sooner or later [1227.24] Stephen: I'm not sure there necessarily is a newbie friendly solution other than you should just read the manual and you know [1233.92] Curry: I check the pins. Well, I generally think that like rather than pins a newbie friendly [1239.64] Curry: Board would be like a flight controller which has all nice easy [1246.8] Curry: solder [1248.4] Curry: Pads all on the outside [1250.56] Curry: So you don't have to try and get in like mid board and get something or some weird jumper [1255.88] Curry: That has to be switched over and it all just the solder goes on quite pleasantly [1261.32] Curry: There's they seem to got sort of semi. I say semi sort of [1266.92] Curry: traditional about like ESC boards to [1269.88] Curry: Fcs, but then again, maybe lots of people just yeah, it's like why the math that little cable [1275.28] Stephen: Some people think there should be some universal standard [1278.24] Stephen: but all that happens is you ask someone to come up with a standard and then [1282.36] Stephen: They simultaneously do it the same time as another manufacturer and then you've got two different standards all of a sudden. So [1289.08] Stephen: What I do like on this one is they put a nice little sticker on the top of it [1292.0] Stephen: No little thing in the box, but they actually put a sticker saying what pads what was the writings always like mice that by oh [1299.32] Stephen: This is a cheaper one. I wouldn't necessarily recommend its hack RC [1302.86] Stephen: This was like the only thing that Banggood had at any sensible price without going upwards of a hundred quid for a stack [1308.5] Stephen: I think this was a 60 quid which is probably more than it's worth but prices are a bit ludicrous right now [1314.7] Tony: Yeah, I the only thing I've bought this week is diesel [1320.14] Tony: And that was expensive [1322.3] Tony: Now actually tell a liable of soda panel thing. Oh [1326.66] Tony: Yeah, pretty cool [1328.74] Tony: It's just to follow you with that [1331.1] Tony: There [1333.14] Tony: Charging my leisure back leisure batteries while I'm [1336.46] Tony: stationary for two days [1338.7] Tony: You can plug in phones and I charge go pros all my go pros have been charged by the Sun today [1345.04] Tony: I charged my DJI batteries by the Sun today. It's very liberating [1351.62] Stephen: You get enough to do quad batteries or is that asking too much think that's probably asking too much [1356.78] Tony: She's only a 60 watt [1358.78] Tony: panel, but it will trickle charge my [1362.06] Tony: Leisure batteries which worked out to take 55 hours from flat to do [1368.58] Tony: 210 amps, but it doesn't need to be flat. So [1373.02] Tony: Yeah, it's pretty it's really really good though [1375.26] Tony: You literally lay out in the Sun and then you can plug a USB port leading it and start charging things [1381.54] Curry: so I don't want to burst your bubble Tony, but over the last couple of days we've had [1387.54] Curry: Strangely brilliant like this one that we call summer. So I want to know how it's doing on [1393.58] Curry: When it's a little bit more traditional [1395.94] Tony: Well, yeah, was it this morning? It was it was a bit cloudy this morning [1401.02] Tony: and it's still it's still charge my GoPro so obviously a slower pace, but [1408.66] Tony: Yes, I am charging up my batteries with my solar fairy yeah, it's [1415.54] Curry: It's it's yeah, so the fairies have to convert your van to electric now and you can go fully off-grid [1423.9] Tony: Diesel I do like well [1427.5] Tony: I've got a big inverter in two pleasure batteries in there [1430.26] Tony: So I've I can have them toast in the morning and a fan on at night and things like that. So [1436.62] Tony: I'm yeah, it runs my gutter back for about 40 minutes nonstop [1443.27] Tony: So it should power a fridge full of beers [1448.39] Tony: Constantly [1449.83] Tony: Yeah, well, we're after see big experiment. I may have wished I am well [1454.99] Stephen: There's gonna be a decreasing amount of mass it needs to chill over time there [1458.71] Stephen: So, you know, the power requirements are gonna drop on me. Yes [1463.39] Tony: But I'm gonna [1465.79] Tony: While I'm driving it it's charging as well. So I've got a split relay. So it's gonna charge all the way down there [1472.19] Tony: And I'm gonna stop for two days because I'm going Friday [1475.95] Tony: Saturday Sunday because I've got to help set things up. So I'm just gonna [1480.59] Tony: Hang my solar fairy off the side of the van. I'm just trickle charge the batteries and [1486.79] Tony: Fingers crossed. They'll all be good. But yeah, no, I don't think it's good enough to not powerful enough to charge life [1493.31] Tony: I've stuff [1494.71] Stephen: Not at all. I mean my leisure batteries will I can do it only there was some decent subsidies on solar and they can push the prices [1501.67] Stephen: down this would all change I think [1503.91] Tony: No, I had someone come around and [1507.67] Tony: Look at my roof of my house because it faces south. They once 14,000 pounds with a Barry [1514.07] Stephen: All right. How long is that gonna take to make that back? [1517.59] Stephen: Before I die or afterwards? Yeah [1520.87] Tony: So I decided no against that company, but I've seen it for about six and a half which [1527.15] Tony: Might do not sure yet [1529.99] Stephen: Depends on the power output the panels and the longevity of them where they degrade and stuff like that, right? [1534.95] Tony: Well, they're always to grade. I mean, I think you're looking at [1539.79] Tony: about 15 years 20 years if push [1544.19] Tony: But the thing I like about is it come with a battery they put the battery in the roof and that will last a couple of days [1550.95] Stephen: So that's a good idea now. They won't buy the power back off you [1554.59] Stephen: Yeah, you used to be able to swing it before when you could sell the power back to the energy providers, but they're being [1561.07] Tony: Get to me. I'm only five feet a kilowatt something ridiculous. It's not even worth it [1567.67] Stephen: And might as well put it into crypto mining [1571.03] Tony: Yes [1572.55] Tony: Well, that costs a lot of money though, doesn't it to run the electricity for certainly not good in the summer [1579.39] Tony: Mm-hmm [1580.75] Tony: Yeah, oh, yeah, that's good. That's that's what I've been doing. Can you xbox ready unpacking? I see they [1589.27] Tony: So nice if anyone in the chat is coming I'll see you Saturday and Sunday [1596.91] Stephen: Yeah, people are going [1599.23] Stephen: Yeah, good. Good. Yeah, I'm thinking of popping along on Saturday myself [1603.27] Stephen: Don't really know what I'm doing [1605.11] Stephen: But I'll turn up with a variety of aircrafts and batteries and see how it goes. So, okay, that's the weekend [1613.51] Curry: In like I can't I can't go my my current excuse is that I'm having to go to Leeds to look at [1620.99] Curry: University open days for my daughter [1622.99] Curry: Yeah, and for the next [1625.27] Curry: Several weeks. I am doing this tour of the country looking at strange universities [1631.75] Stephen: She's figures out how far away she has to get so it's not easy for you to come up and visit her and embarrass her [1637.67] Stephen: Hmm. I actually found 150 mile radius [1640.95] Curry: Caroline's sage advice which was they need to go far enough away [1646.39] Curry: So they can't just pop back and he's been like half a day's travel. Therefore. It's truly independent [1651.63] Curry: They can't just hop on home and say here's my washing [1654.91] Curry: Also, how do I clean stuff and you know ask questions like this? [1659.03] Stephen: So when they get a rental out off-campus like hey dad, can you fix the boiler? Hey dad? [1666.43] Stephen: The sink is backed up. Hey dad. Yeah [1670.15] Curry: that I [1671.59] Curry: Can I can fix a quad? [1674.63] Curry: And maybe a TV [1676.47] Stephen: Any problems she has around the house you just turn up with a quad and like rip it around the house [1680.87] Curry: I just I turn over the hammer and just start hitting it and that's about is it fixed now [1686.13] Curry: It again sort of thing [1688.41] Curry: No, so unfortunately, these are these are long things [1692.61] Curry: Like we have to go up tomorrow to say overnight because it's always lead and then next week. We're doing I think [1700.45] Curry: Lancaster and [1702.33] Curry: Loughborough and then a couple of months after that we're doing end of Bernapia [1706.69] Curry: Which is like a whole like weekend and the flights and stuff. This was Folmer. So it's all like at least five six hours [1714.65] Curry: By road, which is long long way and can't do you how many stops will you be doing that in a Tesla? [1721.37] Curry: We have not done any charging whilst out on the Tesla. Our journeys have been up to about [1727.97] Curry: 220 miles, but that's no problem doing it in one shot. This time we have to stop and charge [1734.81] Curry: So it's like how do you use a supercharger? [1739.21] Curry: This is give me a new experience and [1741.93] Curry: We'll see what happens. We don't know. We've we've looked up the idea is to go up to about Sheffield [1746.97] Curry: find one of these supercharger places [1749.81] Curry: plug it in and see what happens and [1753.25] Curry: Hopefully not break down because that would be pretty embarrassing [1757.37] Curry: Like hello. Can can someone plug me in? [1761.69] Curry: Because if I can't find a supercharger, it's like [1765.09] Curry: You just need like 12 hours or so to charge it every fine [1770.89] Stephen: What's that crazy man doing with that big stack of lipos in the car park? What's going on there? [1776.73] Curry: It won't be pretty [1779.09] Curry: Hopefully be fine Caroline saying supercharger you plug them in. That's it [1783.37] Curry: It's I don't like stuff that I haven't done before. I don't like new experiences [1787.89] Tony: Yeah, but don't you have to is it frees a supercharger is all free for testers. No [1793.65] Curry: No, no, we've we've added [1797.53] Tony: Elon saying in I think they used to be [1802.25] Curry: We ought to charge people and I think we got credit where we bought it for charging but basically you have to [1809.81] Curry: We've put like a credit card in against like the app and I think the idea is now it just [1816.17] Curry: When you plug it in it just like oh, I know this car. I'll charge it to this guy or something. I don't know figure out [1821.93] Tony: That's all back next week. I definitely saw Elon saying oh, yeah, it's gonna be free for everyone in England [1828.93] Curry: No, I've no idea how much it is either it could be really expensive [1832.81] Curry: I've got much choice [1837.73] Curry: Daughters car which is a Ford car and I don't want to sit in it for six hours. No, it's not that [1843.37] Curry: Rather nice risk it in changing gear like a loser. What's that all about? [1848.25] Tony: I [1851.93] Tony: Come out of Sainsbury's I parked my car on the end and there was a Tesla sitting [1856.85] Tony: Cut the parking spaces away in the go. I cut out and went off love your car. Love your car [1864.01] Tony: Thanks, and then I said I've never been in the Tesla take me for a spin [1867.81] Tony: You know, he was a technician [1870.53] Tony: Say that this this bit and he was waggling a dashboard and I was going Jesus wasn't very young [1877.29] Tony: Wasn't I don't know. He said he was just a bit sloppy the bill quality [1882.61] Tony: but [1884.05] Tony: Jesus it was fast. He had the dual motor one. They are super quick. Oh my god. I'm like [1891.53] Curry: Slams back in my favorite thing to do is when I take people out to show my car is just get a bit of road [1897.21] Curry: And just put the foot down. Yeah, because they all [1901.21] Curry: Like this. It's brilliant [1903.37] Tony: Yeah, very good [1907.01] Curry: 10 miles when you [1909.33] Tony: Yeah [1910.89] Stephen: From hearing people talk about the experience. It sounds like Tesla as a concept is almost like a wide beta test of a car [1919.41] Stephen: In many ways. Yeah, it performs really well, but it's not quite if you if you just use it to drive as a car [1926.05] Curry: it's fine if you do any of the like I deliberately didn't get any of this self-driving nonsense because I [1933.13] Curry: Don't trust that who would and you can go on to YouTube and you can watch all these self-driving cars crash into other cars [1940.05] Curry: endlessly and even say some stuff like if you look at the manual which is an online thing even the cruise control is [1948.45] Curry: Used as beta. It's just you may experience phantom braking like what? I don't know. It's just a break randomly in the middle of the road [1957.65] Curry: Sorry, I thought I saw another car there, but I didn't it's okay [1961.05] Stephen: I thought it had like odd door closing and things and stuff like this as well. It would just a [1966.89] Stephen: Bit of an odd design flaw here and there like they're experimenting throwing stuff at the wall [1971.93] Stephen: Someone said [1972.97] Tony: Handles go all the time on the Tesla's cuz they're wires and they pop out and then the wires obviously bring it back in [1980.13] Tony: He says he's forever changing the wires on the bloody door handle. Yeah, that is to be heavy rain was even the bad [1987.13] Curry: The brain the quality on them that's that seems to have got a lot better. They go over that now. Yeah [1992.21] Curry: So we live in old ones because it was like you'd like close a door and you'd like it [1997.33] Curry: That's a bigger gap than that side and that sort of thing [1999.57] Curry: But we've inspected our one a lot and it seems all right that didn't stop my wife managing to scrape it on a piece of [2007.41] Curry: Parking as you took it around a corner, but then we went into this [2012.47] Curry: Tesla repair center and that was interesting to see because if you ever seen the Tesla that's been in a proper crash [2018.71] Curry: It's interesting. It's like [2021.23] Curry: Imagine hitting like a stack of TVs with a hammer and it kind of looks like that. It's not that doesn't like a car [2030.71] Tony: Do you know these girls who are into crystals healing crystals and all that schmell okay, she literally stuck them up all over a [2039.95] Tony: Steering wheel that was like airbag [2045.71] Tony: That's gonna be interesting in your face [2050.91] Tony: Yeah, so [2053.99] Tony: Embedded in a [2055.99] Tony: face [2058.71] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience [2062.35] Frank: Downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only [2065.75] Frank: Sensors to please the iTunes people hosted on the internet forwarded through to your podcast provider [2070.63] Frank: Downloaded playing on your device and is now playing in your ears all thanks to our patreons [2076.27] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits find out more at patreon.com [2082.59] Frank: Let's drone out [2084.43] Tony: anyway back to flying [2086.79] Frank: back to flying I [2088.91] Tony: Mean electric cars are tech and they use probably tech [2092.99] Curry: Quads they are they're big stack of lipos you can you know use for other things perhaps who knows? [2098.19] Tony: Can you charge the complete through for sure from a Tesla? Is there like an output? [2103.87] Tony: Obviously, there's five volts and USB. It'll be a 12-volt socket. What's it rated out? I guess [2110.07] Curry: They're there. What is there on there? There's loads of USBs and wireless charging. I don't know. I saw some of the others like the [2117.31] Curry: The [2119.31] Curry: Kia and the [2121.55] Curry: Was it the high-end I both got? [2124.35] Curry: recent big electric four by fours and they had like an adapter that you plug into the [2131.63] Curry: charge socket and basically it puts like a [2135.19] Curry: 240 volt plug on it which you can then plug stuff in the Tesla has one [2140.59] Curry: It seems it seemed a bit pointless to send all the time charging it up and then just taking the charge away again [2146.65] Stephen: Mm-hmm someone here says there's there's only one 12 white [2152.01] Stephen: There's a 12-volt power socket, but it's got over 10 amps. That's not bad [2157.61] Tony: You can charge you can charge some bats off that [2162.25] Stephen: Model 3 has only one 12-volt power socket, but it's 16 amp socket [2172.25] Curry: Well enough to see where all the sockets are [2175.01] Stephen: So that's like over a hundred watts. You could definitely run a charger off that [2179.65] Curry: I'd like normally I find stuff out by accident or because my wife has noticed something like the other day [2185.25] Curry: She told me like I didn't know how to work the air conditioning because apparently in order to decide where the Jets go [2192.33] Curry: It's a touchscreen and you sort of drag it around and I was like, oh I didn't know how to work that and it's like [2196.93] Curry: Oh now I'm getting cold from the air because it was wanting in the air before nice. So it's got a model 3 [2202.69] Curry: Yeah [2203.97] Stephen: so it looks like it's in the center console and [2207.37] Stephen: There's a couple of cup holders and then there's a compartment in front of that [2210.93] Stephen: well, the the rear wall of the [2214.41] Stephen: Compartment towards the cup holders has a 12-volt socket. It looks a bit. Oh [2219.13] Curry: Okay [2220.73] Tony: Look at that. You can charge and flow your drawing from it charge stuff [2226.77] Tony: Noice [2228.89] Curry: There we go [2230.89] Tony: And you you you've been very secretive about something. I mean curry curtain [2236.37] Tony: Have I all your army drawing thing? You mean my military tech? [2241.13] Tony: We shouldn't really be talk about this [2244.13] Curry: I've painted it gray so people don't know I've accidentally stolen. What's the code again the hornet [2251.17] Curry: The black hornet nano the black hornet nano. Look at all that infrared [2256.63] Curry: Class army tech lies for an hour [2259.27] Stephen: You may be experiencing some sort of scale phenomenon where it looks slightly larger than normal [2264.39] Stephen: That's just because curry's actually got a slightly shrunken hand at the moment. It's just a [2270.55] Curry: No as I'm covering up the rather obvious isheen logo [2275.11] Stephen: Yeah, this is this is the isheen that's not gonna fly for an hour and do 720p HD video [2282.51] Curry: and it doesn't have thermal and [2284.83] Curry: You can't get four miles of range on it, but you can get about 30 meters [2293.71] Curry: I thought it was interesting because I I never flew helicopters [2297.59] Curry: Because they're difficult to learn on and when you crash them they cost hundreds of pounds to put right this allegedly [2306.51] Curry: Kind of ignore the camera because I think it's one of these really horrible [2310.61] Curry: Wi-Fi FPV things that you get in cheap and nasty drones. Oh, so it's FPV [2316.37] Curry: Kind of like, you know, like nasty toy drone FPV [2320.25] Curry: It's that sort of thing but the actual flying of it it it's supposed to just it's got [2326.77] Curry: Underneath there. It's got an optical flow sensor. And the idea is it's able to hold its height [2331.21] Curry: Yes, and it's got a one-touch takeoff and landing. So this is like if you can fly a quad [2339.37] Curry: This this is supposed to fly [2342.33] Curry: So I thought this is interesting because I'm not a great line of sight flyer [2345.69] Curry: but most of the time flying a quad line of sight the problem you've got is [2350.49] Curry: It looks the same from almost any angle and it's really easy to lose orientation. The thing with a helicopter is it's like [2357.41] Curry: Oh big thick end is the front a little skinny and it's direct. So should be alright [2363.37] Curry: but I think I'll be trying to mainly fly it line of sight and see how it goes and I [2369.73] Stephen: Think it'd be quite well. Do you reckon each in optical flow is gonna work? [2374.21] Curry: Not very well at all, especially over like grass or anything that isn't [2380.81] Curry: Beautifully optimal conditions, but I think it'd be fun to try and see what happens [2385.77] Tony: It's carpet optimal conditions for an optical flow. I still don't want it even though it's not that big [2392.09] Curry: It's still it still gives me like [2395.05] Curry: That is you know [2397.09] Curry: About ten inches side to side. I still don't know on that spinning around close to me. So it's definitely an outside quad [2404.85] Tony: I've definitely put that about 15 to 20 inches [2410.77] Curry: Yeah, but I thought it'd be fun I only got it because it was a piece of fun [2414.13] Curry: I don't I don't class it as anything other than a bit of a toy [2417.49] Curry: Yeah, but it's a bit of a toy that I fancied having a go at because wish they did it with five point eight [2422.69] Curry: And log instead of Wi-Fi. That's that I think that'd be good. I might useable [2427.37] Curry: I might open it up and have a look but I know it's got one of these all-in-one boards [2431.97] Curry: Which has the receiver and all the electronics for the helicopter built in so it's not just like I could swap it out for something [2437.33] Curry: proper [2438.45] Curry: But the five point eight I might be able to do but then I'd be looking at something that can fly to about 30 meters [2443.81] Curry: Of range and it's like well, is it worth it? Not 80 grands a killer left frame [2448.93] Curry: It is quite nice. I think yeah, I do like the fact it's modeled directly after that [2455.01] Curry: Black hornet thing if I take it apart [2457.37] Curry: Perhaps I should split black or something and then try and sell it back to the army for like a hundred grand or something [2463.23] Tony: I probably play and then they keep crashing [2467.01] Curry: They don't seem to see they don't seem to do any research if it flies in and crashes and see that. Oh, whatever [2473.69] Stephen: You guys are talking about that last week and it seems they're making very uninformed buying decisions and maybe not training their staff much either [2481.53] Tony: It's scary. No, that's happening everywhere in it cat way. Don't know if that's just an army chambers [2488.21] Curry: Yeah, well whenever we see one of these we talked about one of those [2492.93] Curry: a great big commercial drone went in and it was the case of [2497.53] Curry: like that the the the quad wasn't responding to return to home and [2503.37] Curry: So rather than like piloting manually and it was in like line of sight range [2507.89] Curry: All you had to do is literally go like this with the stick and it would have come back [2511.83] Curry: It's like switch it off. I'll just keep trying to do it again. I'll just keep doing it. No, it's not working still [2517.37] Curry: Just keep trying it and off it went into the town. It's just there's no training for these people as they just [2524.21] Stephen: They should have mandatory like line of sight [2527.05] Stephen: I mean, I'm crap at line of sight [2528.77] Stephen: But I could like that or am I going further away for myself? Am I going towards myself? All right [2534.49] Stephen: Yeah, let's keep going towards myself and then let's lower the throttle [2538.09] Stephen: You don't have to go and do flips and rolls. Do you just got to get the thing near your feet? [2543.73] Curry: It's not that tricky [2544.81] Curry: Especially if you've got something that will self-level which is often are like, uh-oh something's gone wrong [2550.41] Curry: Put it into angle mode take goggles off and then you can even if you'll just see it [2554.69] Curry: You can at least see if you push the stick forward [2556.97] Curry: Which way is it going and you can work it out from there and bring it back. Well, never mind that [2561.13] Stephen: They're probably staring at a controller that actually tells them where it is and how far it is away from them [2565.69] Stephen: So even if you just watch the little screen lights like homes like 50 meters away [2569.33] Stephen: I pull it this way now. I'm 60 meters away. I push it that way now. I'm 40 meters away [2573.73] Tony: Oh, yeah, I'm doing that. We've all panicked before though, aren't they? You know when you're when you [2579.93] Tony: Quite a screen goes blank and you go [2584.85] Stephen: Legislation that's directed at us is supposed to hold us accountable to the same level as commercial operators [2590.73] Stephen: And what we're complaining about is the fact that commercial operators are supposed to go through all this [2595.73] Stephen: And they're clearly just not paying attention and not doing what they are supposed to be doing and we as hobbyists [2601.73] Stephen: I've had much more time on the sticks and can handle the situations just fine [2605.49] Stephen: But we're getting the thick end of of all this legal rubbish [2609.05] Stephen: Meanwhile the people who are doing commercial operations a lot of them have clearly not been adequately trained [2614.37] Stephen: And if they have been trained, they haven't been examined to make sure that they're actually absorbing their knowledge and can operate the thing [2624.25] Curry: And as you know, I'm taking this is like hearsay information but the whole [2630.17] Curry: commercial [2631.57] Curry: pilot's license for a drone is [2634.05] Curry: 10% the flight test which is essentially go in in a circle and land and [2638.73] Curry: 90% can you write an operators manual which will tell you what to do in all these situations? [2643.09] Curry: Apart from if there's an emergency and then what happens the return the home button doesn't work. They haven't they haven't accounted for that yet [2650.33] Stephen: Another 50% how much did your company sponsor the course and how much money has changed hands, you know [2656.57] Tony: What the weather is gonna be tomorrow [2660.01] Tony: Brown paper and what is that cloud? Is it a clean this nimbus? Is it? [2664.65] Tony: You know all that. Yeah [2668.26] Stephen: Not a lot of people in IT who do these tests and often the least capable people of the people with the most credentials [2675.7] Stephen: They did do the test they jockey through this two-day course or something get the accreditation [2682.38] Stephen: They've got no practical experience and they've forgotten it because it was a test they did eight months ago and haven't touched it since so [2691.5] Curry: Worse than that on on one of the IBM training courses, which is it's like here you do a week and you'll learn about whatever [2700.26] Curry: There were there were business partners which basically are able to sell equipment [2704.9] Curry: But in order to sell equipment, they have to have their staff trained up to this certain level of accreditation [2711.18] Curry: So they have to pass a bunch of courses and what they normally do they just buy this [2716.7] Curry: Unlimited training sort of token. So this guy was at one of these training courses and he hadn't gone to the actual course [2723.54] Curry: He was just going in the exam and trying to bluff his way through the multiple choice questions to try and pass something [2729.7] Curry: Yeah, and it was on something called HACMP, which is high availability high availability cluster multi-processing [2736.14] Curry: Which is a thing we had on the AX operating system where he does like [2741.74] Curry: Take over if there's failures and stuff like that [2744.16] Curry: It's not really something you can just guess but I literally saw him Lee you go take a test [2749.26] Curry: Come out and then ask me questions about what is it if this happens and he's trying to figure out what to do next [2755.26] Curry: He just kept going in and out and in and out. So at the end of the day, he may have got that accreditation [2760.34] Curry: But also no absolutely zilch about anything at all other than perhaps a couple of multiple choice questions, which may have stuck [2767.94] Stephen: Yeah, it's not pretty. I mean I've I've studied for a couple of things and got them [2771.5] Stephen: I did do Windows exams as well like the Microsoft [2774.62] Stephen: Certifications and those you didn't need to study you just walked into the room and picked the obvious answers and you got your [2780.26] Stephen: 85% and passed it because they were just you know, joke qualifications [2784.98] Stephen: Yeah, not always a guarantee success [2788.3] Curry: Hmm shocking [2790.5] Curry: no, and it's the same with um [2793.18] Curry: multi rotor stuff and [2795.3] Curry: commercial prices, but that that kind of will change didn't it in terms that [2799.9] Curry: Has that changed now Tony? You know this the sick the answer this one you can you can do [2805.7] Tony: Can't remember [2807.9] Curry: But you didn't have to do like a [2809.98] Curry: Proper test as it was previously. It was a sort of simplified thing, wasn't it? [2814.5] Tony: Yeah, it was all online. It was a couple of nights [2818.18] Tony: Chatting it was it was mostly about weather to be honest. It was weather [2824.1] Tony: Then how far away you are from someone and it's kind of like a cfc or something else [2830.18] Tony: Yeah, it's the a2 [2832.26] Curry: You can literally go out [2834.1] Curry: Look in the sky and decide if you're gonna have problems or it's gonna be okay, can't you you don't need to like [2839.78] Curry: What is this cloud? [2841.62] Curry: Pretty much. Is this a cirrus? [2843.62] Tony: it was yeah, it was a bit most it was quite a lot of weather a bit of battery torque and tech and [2851.06] Tony: Just how far away you're gonna be from people and that's it really [2855.38] Tony: hmm [2856.74] Stephen: Yeah, i'd say that how far you are from hazards [2858.9] Stephen: It's like 90 of the important stuff that people actually need to apply [2862.98] Stephen: But it's the only part that really hurts anyone else [2865.86] Tony: So I can fly to 30 meters away from someone now with this [2869.86] Tony: but [2871.54] Tony: in my head like 30 meters [2874.66] Tony: could be different to what it actually is because it what you're going to go out there and [2880.66] Tony: Take a you know ruler to it and or countless paces as we know, you know guys might overestimate [2886.58] Stephen: You might find that 30 meters is actually about six foot seven [2890.58] Stephen: Um, yes need to be careful when you're guessing that [2894.26] Tony: Exactly. So I don't know man [2897.06] Curry: Yeah, I think the key is if you hit them you were less than 30 meters away [2900.82] Tony: If you were quite close [2903.54] Tony: But you know indoors you can fly as close as you want do whatever you want [2910.18] Stephen: speaking of a2 cfc, did you see the uh [2913.22] Stephen: the the response from the [2915.38] Stephen: The the caa on the the questions they asked people a while back where they were asking what to do for the transitional period [2924.18] Curry: No, I don't even remember these questions [2926.34] Stephen: Fill in fill in fill in the void that our beloved andrew slash frank has left and report on this briefly [2932.58] Stephen: There was a questionnaire [2934.18] Stephen: because there's [2935.46] Stephen: They're supposed to be a transitional period because everything's in the brave new world all our drones will be marked [2942.58] Stephen: With classification describing how fast they can move what they weigh how difficult they are to pilot etc, etc, right? [2950.42] Stephen: Except when did anyone buy one of these the answer is never because those [2955.68] Stephen: Classifications while they exist in theory are not being applied to any shipping products. No manufacturer has made one [2962.26] Stephen: So we're in the transitional period where they've made up the law [2965.3] Stephen: But there's nothing to apply the law to and all of our drones all our quads [2970.34] Stephen: are never going to have any uh [2973.14] Stephen: Classification applied to them because they're all self-built [2975.54] Stephen: and so [2976.66] Stephen: they asked what to do about this and the answer is that [2979.7] Stephen: Everyone wanted the transitional period to basically continue in perpetuity and they've said well [2986.1] Stephen: In the absence of any products that we can actually apply the law to because no manufacturer has created a drone with this [2992.88] Stephen: Classification what we are just going to extend the transitional period so so far so good [2997.78] Stephen: You can carry on using your a to coc and flying your your a to open category drones and all this stuff [3004.26] Stephen: Um, which pretty much means most people I think are looking at the under 900 gram category covers pretty much all freestyle quads [3012.18] Stephen: And you don't go within I think [3014.9] Stephen: I'm, maybe wrong. So don't quote me, but I think that's the 30 meter one, right? [3019.22] Stephen: Yeah, and there's a sub 250 where you get 15 meter [3023.62] Tony: Except which is it has to have a slow mode on [3028.66] Stephen: Yeah, and that how do you do that? [3031.54] Tony: Yes, well it will be dji [3034.82] Tony: Trying run it [3036.34] Curry: So I think the reason I don't know about this is when we started getting this [3041.62] Curry: Question of those isa rulings which then became these classes and it started talking about you may not go faster than x meters per second [3050.02] Curry: I completely switched off and say i'm not doing any of this [3053.62] Curry: I'm not I became a petulant teenager. So i'm not doing it. Yeah, try and make me [3058.02] Curry: I just carry i'm just gonna carry on what i'm doing [3060.5] Curry: And it's usually used to go on rules about don't be on fire. Don't be a dick [3064.74] Curry: Watch out for people that sort of thing, which I think is working quite well for me [3069.3] Curry: Apart from and still bumping into people that are asking me how I possibly got this permission. Yes cut the carons. Yeah [3077.3] Stephen: Yeah, i'm still flying near a skate park [3080.02] Stephen: And the carons are still very distracted by things going on in the skate park and not really too interested in what i'm doing [3086.66] Stephen: Which is good [3088.82] Stephen: It's between the skate park and the basketball courts, um, which are both [3093.94] Stephen: You know refugee refuges for people who want to play loud music and smoke weed [3098.5] Stephen: And so the guy standing there flying a quad in circles around his head isn't getting any attention. So it's all good [3104.5] Tony: It's all safe [3106.02] Tony: I might I might go to a local basketball court [3108.52] Curry: I'm unclear if he wants to fly his quad around there or just score some weed [3119.4] Tony: The latter [3123.56] Tony: Once frank just put it has any it won't come up close to an electronic [3128.84] Tony: Cons of that is [3132.28] Stephen: Conspicuity [3134.82] Stephen: Conspicuity [3136.76] Stephen: Opposite of inconspicuous beacon a beacon basically. Yeah. Yeah, I think they're [3142.52] Tony: Gonna do that on the new dji stuff as well [3145.64] Tony: It's all gonna be this is where I am. This is where you are [3149.8] Stephen: I don't think anyone trusts dji to do this in a decent way this whole way americans definitely don't [3155.4] Curry: We've we've let the police know where you are [3158.52] Curry: Yeah, right if you're flying inside the gatwick [3161.4] Stephen: There was that thing where dji marketing were told that the system [3165.24] Stephen: Was uh secure and encrypted and people couldn't read the data and it turned out [3170.84] Stephen: There was no security provisions taken. It was all just blank advertising of the idea of the air [3176.28] Stephen: And um, the marketing people had been given a packet of lies to feed to the media [3181.16] Stephen: And the the actual engineers at dji were perfectly aware that there was no protection of users data [3186.6] Stephen: It was effectively saying exactly what your account was when it was flying around and advertising it to everyone [3192.6] Stephen: fun times [3194.04] Tony: nice [3197.64] Curry: Terrible [3200.12] Curry: Yes, shame because I it's um [3202.68] Curry: I I especially loved that one [3205.48] Curry: They bought out with the idea of being like a rescue services drone, but i'm guessing that's not going to get any um [3212.92] Curry: Traction in the u.s. Because it's like this is government and we're not buying dji drones [3216.76] Curry: That's the one that had that amazing telephoto lens and had inbuilt [3220.68] Curry: Uh infrared and everything for night vision and stuff really amazing [3225.88] Tony: I think we've got the rocket man though, aren't we the english guy? [3229.8] Tony: literally [3231.08] Tony: Has put a [3232.44] Tony: Rocket on his arm and yeah [3235.56] Tony: Have you seen them flying up with um? [3238.36] Tony: Medi packs on their bank around the wiles and stuff the literally fly up and down [3243.32] Tony: Yeah, excellent [3245.32] Curry: That is uh, i've said that that that does feel a little bit like it's all a big pr stunt as well because they're still [3252.76] Curry: That they're not too dissimilar in accord in the terms of like after four minutes [3256.44] Curry: You'd better land somewhere quick because you're you're out of juice [3260.6] Stephen: Andrew just said that the electronic conspicuity [3263.64] Stephen: Beacons are a requirement for the c classes and he thinks that's the thing blocking anyone releasing anything to market [3269.64] Stephen: And there's a certain amount of resistance there i gather because in order for any sort of electronic [3274.5] Stephen: Conspicuity to be useful it's got to have a decent amount of range [3278.44] Stephen: Which means it's got to have a fairly high transmit power [3281.4] Stephen: Which means you've got to pollute airwaves with a lot of extra interference and if people put up armies of quads [3288.92] Stephen: It's going to just denial of service stuff in whatever frequency band that is [3294.04] Stephen: So that could be a problem [3296.76] Stephen: That could be a big problem [3299.16] Tony: Yes, it will be [3302.04] Stephen: I think dji is a problem now. Imagine if it's just broadcasting signal [3306.52] Stephen: Shouting here. I am here. I am here. I am as loudly as it can as well as the video [3311.88] Curry: I mean, I remember getting upset about the idea that quad should have something for conspicuity [3317.24] Curry: I'm getting the hang of that word now and yet that is not a requirement of light aircraft [3322.52] Curry: Even though they're manned and the the excuse was there was like oh, well people can look around [3328.76] Curry: I'm gonna play [3330.28] Curry: And find out what's there [3332.28] Tony: Okay [3333.48] Tony: There's a um question in the chat from brian fvv. No, he says [3340.04] Curry: What do you guys think about freesky and their access protocol supposed to be encrypted? [3345.64] Curry: That's not [3347.72] Curry: Was it encrypted because it got? [3350.04] Curry: Cracked pretty quickly in terms of yeah, you can do access on um, the multi-protocol modules now, can't you? [3356.68] Stephen: exactly [3357.88] Stephen: So if it was encrypted they did a lousy job of it and there it much like there are cars and there are cars [3364.12] Stephen: And there are nice meals out and there are nice meals out there is encryption and then there is encryption you can do it [3371.24] Stephen: badly just because it's called encryption you couldn't use like a replacement cipher where you [3376.6] Stephen: Replace like a with b and c with d and you call it encryption and you're just lazy [3382.44] Stephen: Or you could do it properly and use something like tls for you know, like websites used for hgtps and do it really well [3389.88] Stephen: Um, and there's a spectrum there. So it's not all on the same [3393.8] Stephen: Footing and I guess fr sky [3397.4] Stephen: Might have just taken a shortcut or two because it's certainly been uh included in the multi-protocol module now [3404.52] Curry: Yes, I mean it's so hard to tell because we don't talk about freesky anymore because it's like freesky [3409.32] Curry: Yeah, they used to do something good and now [3411.96] Curry: They seem somewhat irrelevant to the industry [3415.0] Curry: uh and [3416.2] Curry: Anything going on see anymore say that I still think you know that back in the day [3422.76] Curry: Xn pluses were the absolute go-to and i've still got [3426.36] Curry: Two quads on that wall so near and they worked very nicely but they went quite well [3430.6] Curry: I think they just got greedy didn't they they said oh, let's oh we're gonna put tbs out of business and [3435.64] Curry: Hey, we don't want these copies. We're gonna [3438.6] Curry: Force everybody to upgrade and try and bring out this new protocol and make everything bad [3445.24] Tony: Uh, yeah, people tend to rest on their laurels. Unfortunately, it's humans. They get greedy, don't they? [3452.84] Tony: They do [3454.44] Stephen: I did notice that uh, so that the new ethos radios that fr sky have they're kind of fancy things touch screen [3460.6] Stephen: They look like they might be android. They're not they're this ethos thing [3464.28] Stephen: Uh, and there was some chat on htx [3467.08] Stephen: It turns out the main reason that they only run ethos and they don't run htx is because they changed the cpu to h7 [3475.08] Stephen: But there's some rumblings there. So we might see htx on the new fr sky radios [3480.28] Stephen: So they might end up being useful radios in the long term [3484.68] Stephen: Could happen [3486.04] Curry: R9 was a real winner god. That was absolute pants, wasn't it? [3491.08] Curry: I I remember playing with that and having [3493.64] Curry: That I I was actually in contact with back in the day when when r9 was happening and making videos about it and it's like [3500.28] Curry: My rsi signal dropped to four like four [3503.96] Curry: Like that seems bad [3505.64] Curry: And it's like oh, yeah. Yeah, we're going to change that and it's going to be better. I was like, can you provide like [3511.56] Curry: Issues you're working on and what you're fixing and what the next release is going to bring and they're like no [3515.72] Curry: We're just we'll we'll show people when it's out and it's just been [3519.88] Curry: Awful and yeah, somebody asked me caroline's just saying r9 is a winner as you can flash them to here [3525.4] Curry: Someone previously asked me in a video because I did a video about how to flash a module over [3529.88] Curry: Is there any advantage in running express rs over r9? I don't get why I would do it and it's like [3536.04] Curry: One's being actively developed really well and the other's been left rot for the last two years [3541.24] Curry: So it's like well pick your side really p.s. Yeah elrs is the one that's getting developed a lot [3548.12] Stephen: I can say sometimes you need these technologies just so they can act as kind of [3554.84] Stephen: A counterpoint, right? [3555.96] Stephen: So you had tbs with crossfire and r9 using basically the same chipset as crossfire [3562.36] Stephen: And you just need one so that the other one can be a bit scared and actually improve [3567.4] Stephen: And so you ended up with with that hardware being taken on by elrs [3571.0] Stephen: But some things are crap, but they act as a catalyst to stop the rest of the market from standing still [3578.12] Tony: I've done the same as numbskull or just stuck with crossfire on all my stuff [3582.92] Tony: Except for my mx class is not running [3588.2] Curry: Yeah, and there's nothing wrong with that it's like if it's not broke don't try and fix it [3591.72] Curry: But if it's if something's doing something that you want [3595.0] Curry: Um get that instead [3597.0] Curry: I think it'd be better. Yeah [3600.52] Curry: Well, anyway, well done to our [3603.4] Curry: fun hour [3604.92] Curry: And uh, i'm looking forward for next week just to hear what you guys got up to. Sorry. I can't go with [3609.96] Curry: Um, have fun without me will do [3613.88] Curry: And stuff but um in the meantime [3616.76] Curry: Thanks for joining us. Uh, everyone in the chat and thanks to all our patreons [3620.44] Curry: You saw their names ticking along and if you've ever got spare cash and you want to help support this show [3626.28] Curry: And what we do, please feel free to join up and you get all lots of benefits like um [3632.92] Curry: I don't know [3634.28] Tony: What do you get stickers from jack if they pay us enough we will dedicate a show exclusively to them [3641.0] Stephen: We will do that [3642.36] Curry: That's the top criteria, isn't it? [3644.92] Curry: You've got the uh, the patron only thing that we probably haven't done this month because there's not enough of us [3650.12] Curry: And uh, lots lots of stuff that you post on. I can't actually log into the site. So I don't know [3654.6] Curry: That's my excuse someone get me the login [3657.4] Curry: But it's a big time you have been joined this week by stephen who's video cameras shut off my camera is dead [3664.68] Stephen: I'm still here [3667.0] Curry: tony [3668.12] Curry: Bonjour [3669.48] Curry: And i've been kerry kitten. Thanks for joining. We'll see you next week [3672.6] UNKNOWN: Bye
