[67.69] Stephen: Hello. Well, I'm not everyone's favorite though. Am I that's that's a lie. I'm a stand in for everyone's favorite who isn't available this week.

[80.81] Tony: This has got to be talked about because this weekend, someone, a viewer, a listener, asked me if I was actually married to real. This has got to stop this these rumors.
[98.69] Stephen: All right, all right. And back on phase three, start disseminating the fake photographic evidence.

[111.33] Tony: I go. So yeah, I want to address this to all our listeners on the podcast and watching live. No, I'm not married to Jack for heaven's sake. It's just a ruse. It's just for 10.
[127.45] Stephen: It's just very easily embarrassed. You shouldn't.
[132.89] Tony: I was chatting to a guy. I'm listening. I've been listening to three years for three years. And I was like, Oh, hi. And he said his FPV name. I can't remember your FPV name. So I apologize. But he was like, sort of talks for ages and then went, are you actually, you know, married to Jack? I mean, it's fine.
[154.89] Tony: I was like, No, I'm not. I was absolutely devastated. Jack and he, of course, it cheered him up. No, and he was absolutely wetting. He said,

[172.73] Tony: So yeah, that was a that was nice.
[178.13] Stephen: Anyway, what were you up to meeting all these pilots? We should get to the the lead.
[185.13] Tony: We were at wings and wheels, which needs to be renamed, isn't it really?
[191.53] Cerb: It doesn't really. Not a fat lot of wheels.
[195.21] Stephen: There were quite a few boats as well, which didn't feature those boats. There was hovercraft.
[201.49] Cerb: So it should be wings and some wheels and a handful of rudders and some drones. Yeah.
[209.25] Tony: And some propellers. Yeah, no, it was a good event. Got there, got there on a Friday.
[217.49] Tony: Literally to an empty field. And I was like, what are we doing? He's setting up my tent and stuff. But it soon packed out. It was it was quite a good turnout, actually. It was really good.
[228.93] Cerb: Yeah, it was bigger than I expected it to be, actually. It's the first time I've done wings and wheels.
[233.33] Tony: Oh, yeah, of course, you haven't been there before, have you?
[236.29] Stephen: No. I was walking down the flight line. I was worried there weren't any any quads at all. I thought, oh, no one here, no one here. It's just all these noisy petrol planes going round in circles and round in circles and round in circles.
[249.73] Stephen: And then finally got to the end and right in the corner, who was hiding down there but this guy?
[256.13] Tony: Cerberus.
[257.97] Stephen: In his little tent.
[259.53] Stephen: In a gazebo on the side of the tent, strictly speaking, yeah.
[262.21] Cerb: Toked on to the the whoop marquee. They had a jolly good time, bless them.
[268.93] Cerb: Yeah, we always get shoved on the end. Every year, every year.
[275.09] Cerb: Yeah, yeah, I don't know why the marquee for the whoops was kind of flight side on the other. So there's a fence, which, you know, there's a fence on the side of the fence.
[289.37] Cerb: divides the general populace from the spinny blades of death.
[294.73] Cerb: And the whoop marquee is on the other side of the fence. And whilst whoops do have spinny blades, I wouldn't qualify them as spinny blades of death. No, really.
[306.05] Stephen: Are you saying that there's a difference between 200 kilos of petrol powered aircraft and a 65 mil whoop?
[312.73] Cerb: Yeah.
[313.41] Cerb: It's a tiny, tiny bit.
[317.29] Cerb: Yeah, I don't know. I think they'd be better off moving that to the other side of the fence and giving us more space to fly, frankly.
[326.41] Cerb: I don't think that would hurt anybody.
[328.49] Tony: At least they cut the grassy shoes last year, just like up here.
[333.13] Stephen: I think it would have benefited having the whoop stuff up where, you know, all the little model boats and stuff where I get the kids involved a bit.
[339.69] Stephen: It was really out of the way and hard to know it was there.
[342.89] Cerb: They drew a good crowd, actually, considering they're on sort of the edge of beyond.
[348.05] Cerb: When they were doing their finals and stuff, I did look over my shoulder.
[351.37] Cerb: They did have, you know, some good crowds in there, really good on them.
[354.41] Cerb: And they set up a great track as well.
[355.77] Cerb: So we've got a big big up logo.
[358.29] Cerb: Those guys are nicely done.
[360.61] Tony: Took a bit too much of our time, though.
[364.45] Cerb: We never did get that 20 minutes back.
[365.97] Cerb: Did you notice that?

[368.57] Stephen: So because of the proximity, it was either X-class or the whoops.
[373.17] Stephen: I imagine that was a little challenging.
[376.81] Tony: Yeah, because we had wing racing and X-class racing.

[380.69] Stephen: But obviously the wings weren't flying the same course as the tiny whoops for various reasons.
[387.21] Stephen: The tiny whoops were indoors on one course and the wings were outdoors on another course.
[391.21] Stephen: And if those two courses have maybe been a few hundred metres apart, then you could have just done both at the same time.
[397.97] Cerb: We could have put them two hundred metres apart with a big wall of aluminium foil between us.
[402.69] Cerb: Just a big one with them.

[407.97] Cerb: It was, I mean, a tiny whoop VTX isn't that powerful, but it's not worth messing about with.
[414.61] Cerb: And we meshed in with each other pretty well.

[422.33] Cerb: So we just sorted it out between us.

[442.05] Stephen: They're also a lot quicker to get up and running.
[444.01] Stephen: The X-class stuff was a bit kind of hesitant.

[451.25] Tony: Well, it was a test.

[460.25] Cerb: And also like the five inch racers, if you go to a, you know, a BDRA event,

[469.49] Cerb: So they're pretty like they're on it.
[470.97] Cerb: They know when it's their heat, they know when they're spotting.
[474.65] Cerb: And we can churn through heats pretty quickly.
[476.85] Cerb: The wing guys and the X-class guys.
[478.65] Cerb: Yeah, it's the second time we've ever run a timed race in the UK.
[481.93] Cerb: So there's a bit of training to do, you know,
[484.45] Cerb: get them in the right place at the right time.
[486.89] Cerb: They were good this weekend.
[488.05] Cerb: I thought weren't too many people not where they should be.
[492.17] Cerb: And it was chilled.
[492.85] Cerb: You know, it was laid back.
[493.77] Cerb: It wasn't like let's hammer through it.

[654.33] Cerb: So she's yeah, the huge estate car is a definite bonus.

[659.13] Tony: I want to remember where to put everything
[664.41] Tony: when I'm packing it or when I'm saying when you set it up like wires here,
[669.25] Tony: what antenna boxes and then you're live streaming over 4G
[675.37] Tony: and and then you've got a camera as well.
[678.29] Tony: The second day, I love that camera view.
[681.13] Cerb: The field cam. Yeah, that was the first time for me actually trying that.
[684.53] Cerb: So I was really pleased with that.
[687.61] Tony: And did you switch it at the right time?
[689.29] Tony: Was it manually switched?
[690.69] Cerb: Manually switched. Yeah.
[692.37] Cerb: So just where's my Serb deck somewhere somewhere?
[697.05] Cerb: So I can't afford an Elgato stream deck.
[699.09] Stephen: So I got that. Oh, just an array of buttons.
[702.65] Cerb: Yeah. So yeah, so that's really handy.
[705.29] Cerb: You can just have that under your left hand and you know,

[708.73] Cerb: You just hit the right button and off you go.
[713.33] Stephen: I didn't notice when some of the X classes were doing their laps,
[716.01] Stephen: it wasn't always hitting the the lap timer.
[719.89] Cerb: Very hard. Yeah, it's tricky.
[722.09] Cerb: So the lap timer is very easy to tune for a five inch
[726.49] Cerb: because the gate is that bit smaller.
[729.49] Cerb: So for everybody doesn't know how we do the timing, it's on your video signal.
[734.53] Cerb: So in the start finish gate is the timer box,
[737.41] Cerb: and it's actually eight video receivers
[740.69] Cerb: plugged into some very clever electronics.
[742.89] Cerb: And as you come across, if you if you displayed it as a graph of RSSI,
[748.41] Cerb: the signal strength as you cross the timer, you get a peak.
[751.33] Cerb: And then as you fly off around the course,
[753.81] Cerb: if you come slightly closer to the timer, you might get a little peak.
[757.05] Cerb: But so that's why when you're laying out tracks,
[759.29] Cerb: you have to be careful to keep the start finish.
[761.97] Stephen: You don't want to concentrate or anything too much.
[764.57] Cerb: You would not finish.
[766.21] Cerb: Yeah, you wouldn't put it in a split or something like that.
[768.89] Cerb: So keep it away from everything else.
[770.17] Cerb: And as you cross the line, you get that video peak.
[772.37] Cerb: Well, with the X class, they're flying that bit higher.
[777.53] Cerb: And the timer wasn't necessarily seeing it as it wasn't on the mast.
[780.85] Stephen: Then it was right down on the ground.
[782.33] Cerb: And it's like sitting on the ground.
[783.81] Cerb: Yeah. And it has very directional antennas.
[786.37] Cerb: They're patches, but they're incredibly narrow patches.
[791.25] Cerb: So when you've got a wide tall gate,
[793.57] Cerb: it's a little more difficult.
[795.05] Cerb: And then due to it being a little bit blustery,
[799.57] Cerb: it was very windy, wasn't it?
[801.53] Cerb: It's a little bit blustery.
[803.49] Cerb: The actual X class square gates were destroyed
[807.97] Cerb: within, I mean, a couple of hours on day one.
[810.97] Cerb: Yeah. And the thing with that is you can then you can tune
[814.49] Cerb: the signal strength to the height of that gate pretty much.
[818.33] Cerb: And that's unknown quantity.
[821.61] Cerb: Once we lost those gates, we had to use the flags.
[825.01] Cerb: Well, it's very easy to go around the tip of a flag.
[827.81] Cerb: And it's, you know, you're still correct.
[829.45] Cerb: Flight is still on track, but you've gone too high for the time to pick you up.
[834.05] Cerb: So that was challenging.
[836.01] Cerb: But we knew it would be and we made the best of it because that,
[840.05] Cerb: you know, what can you do when when the weather destroys your gates?
[844.17] Tony: Yeah, just destroys your sleep when you're on top of a van in a tent.
[849.61] Stephen: I can certainly understand why the X class didn't want to get down
[853.65] Stephen: and cut the daisies after hearing a few of them pinwheel around
[857.33] Stephen: making very expensive noises.
[859.69] Cerb: Yeah, when when they do hit the deck, every roll just is painful
[863.49] Cerb: because like you just there's 100 quid, another 100 quid.
[867.33] Cerb: That's about 400.
[868.85] Cerb: And then the smoke begins to rise.
[871.05] Cerb: You know, OK, that's dead.
[872.85] Tony: Yeah.
[875.25] Tony: Luckily, fingers crossed, none.

[916.29] Tony: And then when we come around that corner and the wind, honestly,

[924.65] Tony: gone with the wind, it was just so fast down that straight.
[927.61] Tony: And then turning back against it was like, you know, having a big sail.
[933.65] Tony: Very hard. It was probably
[935.49] Tony: I reckon it was 20 mile an hour constant wind for two days. Yeah.
[942.33] Cerb: So I've never actually flown in the next class.
[944.73] Cerb: Is it quite wind affected?
[947.37] Tony: It definitely was both days. Yeah. Yeah. Definitely.
[952.65] Tony: Coming coming back against the wind round them top two flags
[957.93] Tony: was was I was like 100 percent for all 90, 100 percent for all coming back.
[964.05] Tony: Wow. And then whipping around that bottom flag,
[968.05] Tony: I was 50 percent and letting the wind take me. So yeah.
[972.85] Tony: So you have to adjust to all all of that.
[976.05] Tony: And then it was a shame the
[979.25] Tony: it was a shame the wind destroyed the two gates because, you know, it's nice.
[985.13] Tony: It's nice to go under and over them.
[987.05] Tony: And, you know, so I just acted like it was still there.
[990.05] Tony: So that's why I kept split s in that them two flags, to be honest.
[995.33] Tony: I think it was the shortest route anyway.
[998.09] Cerb: Yeah, it was affected the wing guys really badly as well.

[1022.53] Tony: Yes, I've got it, which is really nice
[1025.13] Tony: because it's got a nice mattress and it's really big and stuff.
[1028.05] Tony: But being up higher on top of the van and just flapping around
[1034.09] Tony: at I think three o'clock, three o'clock in the morning, it really, really got up.
[1038.65] Tony: And it was like I was like this shaking on top of the van.
[1044.13] Tony: I was like, oh, my God, I'm never, ever going to get to sleep.
[1047.45] Stephen: I think when you talked about your van, I assumed you were sleeping
[1050.73] Stephen: inside the van, not on top of it, on top of it in a tent.
[1057.01] Cerb: Well, full safari mode, so the lions couldn't get. Hmm. Yeah.
[1062.05] Cerb: Yeah, my hotel room was lovely.

[1067.25] Cerb: I'm going to blow around at all.
[1069.57] Tony: I know I'm thinking about that next year, but then you miss all the
[1074.41] Tony: bonding and the fire pit and the sitting around the fire in the evening,

[1089.41] Stephen: about losing sleep. Yes.
[1092.09] Tony: And then Numskull slept like a log.

[1122.21] Cerb: I was pretty busy Saturday night.
[1125.85] Cerb: Yeah. And also, as it's kind of it's kind of a work gig as much as it's fun.
[1129.73] Cerb: It's also you've got to be on your game a bit.
[1132.77] Cerb: So hotel and I'm getting old as well.
[1138.33] Tony: I'm not feeling I was literally thinking about next year's like, do I?
[1144.09] Tony: Because it's always that's like the first year we ever done it.

[1150.77] Tony: we were just like displaying.
[1152.49] Tony: We were doing a sort of display race.
[1155.13] Tony: So we we were just just showing a crack.

[1164.13] Tony: But I kind of enjoyed it.
[1166.85] Tony: There was a couple of people who were like, oh, my God, tell him to be quiet.

[1172.25] Tony: Like, as well, I quite like it because we're if you're racing, you can
[1176.85] Tony: like, because when Joker and Clive were racing, brilliant.
[1180.89] Tony: Between them two, absolutely fantastic race.
[1183.53] Tony: It was spot on.
[1185.21] Tony: I think it was about four, four, probably four laps of really close racing.
[1189.69] Tony: Clive, overtaking Joker, you know, coming back and overtaking.
[1195.61] Tony: Really, really good fun.
[1196.81] Tony: But when you're when you're flying, of course, you can't see backwards.
[1202.21] Tony: You don't know how far you are in front of them.
[1204.49] Tony: But when the service is showing, then he's coming up.
[1209.85] Tony: He's right behind him.

[1212.81] Tony: Helps you get on the throttle.
[1214.77] Tony: Literally does. I've never seen Danny, Danny Boy, Joe Commission panic so much.
[1221.37] Tony: Yeah, so we all thrashed our batteries, but
[1226.37] Tony: yeah, it was good. I enjoyed it.
[1228.65] Cerb: And also the nice thing with that class is you can see the overtakes.
[1232.17] Cerb: Oh, yes, you definitely can.
[1234.53] Stephen: We were wondering, Tony, how you knew
[1236.93] Stephen: what your battery level was, because I could have sworn you only had the camera
[1240.53] Stephen: OSD saying five volts and nothing else.
[1243.57] Stephen: So how did you even keep the batteries intact?

[1248.57] Tony: So I know what they're like.
[1250.33] Tony: Even though it is windy, I still stuck to my two minutes

[1259.25] Tony: shouting out because I couldn't hear it because it was so windy.
[1262.53] Tony: I was like, someone stand next to me and, you know, count me down.
[1265.25] Stephen: You're rocking a free OSD beta flight board.

[1272.13] Stephen: I definitely had OSD for your flight.
[1274.61] Tony: But I will tell you the reason I don't. OK. All right.

[1285.17] Tony: If it starts because you know, when you're pushing, it dips and you think
[1289.41] Tony: and you start seeing twenty one, twenty one, I need to land.
[1291.93] Tony: But then you let off the throttle, go over a gate or whatever,
[1295.53] Tony: or you're with the wind and it shoots back up.

[1674.01] Stephen: This might be a time to kind of touch on something.
[1675.97] Stephen: So when I was off last time, people were saying, oh, 4.3.
[1680.01] Stephen: Oh, they changed everything.
[1680.97] Stephen: Oh, it's harder to tune because you haven't got your little
[1684.05] Stephen: you haven't got your little square.
[1685.49] Stephen: You can't play the number game anymore.
[1687.89] Stephen: And but actually the point of getting rid of that huge matrix of numbers
[1693.45] Stephen: is to try and make it easier because there was always a winning combination,
[1697.21] Stephen: a ratio of those numbers where things worked best if they stayed
[1701.73] Stephen: in proportion to each other, right?
[1703.81] Stephen: Yeah. And so what the developers did is made it so that instead of having
[1708.37] Stephen: to add three to this one and five to this one and seven to this one
[1711.89] Stephen: to try and keep that ratio intact as you make the gains higher,
[1716.77] Stephen: they've just put the sliders in so the gains that relationship stays in you.
[1722.25] Stephen: So I need more PID authority because, you know, I've got a little bit
[1726.53] Stephen: of oscillation. I haven't got the grip in flips and rolls that I want.
[1730.61] Stephen: So you you crank up the master slider or you crank up the P and I slider
[1735.49] Stephen: and it keeps everything in that nice ratio without you having to get
[1738.29] Stephen: your calculator out and be three on this row, four on that row.
[1743.13] Koel: So it basically you do one slider, but it keeps it all in the same.
[1746.49] Koel: Yeah, that's really handy.
[1748.57] Stephen: It multiplies everything on the grid by like one point one, for example.
[1753.05] Cerb: You drag it out.
[1754.37] Cerb: You can't put your ratios completely out of kilter.
[1758.01] Cerb: Everything drifts along with you.
[1759.69] Cerb: Yeah, drifts.
[1762.09] Cerb: I've still never done it.
[1765.01] Cerb: I'm not that quick anyway. Nobody would notice.
[1767.89] Tony: I think filters are.
[1769.93] Tony: Well, you should do filters first and then PID.
[1773.89] Stephen: Yeah, ideally try and find a point where your frame resonance becomes a problem.
[1779.13] Stephen: And so you just crank up the filters.
[1781.29] Stephen: And what that's doing is it increases the low pass.
[1784.69] Stephen: So your controls are the slowest movement.
[1787.05] Stephen: Right. They're pretty much always guaranteed to to get through the control.
[1791.61] Stephen: The actual intentional movement of the quad isn't isn't super fast.
[1795.69] Stephen: But you want to avoid
[1797.93] Stephen: paying attention to all the little outside influences
[1802.13] Stephen: and figure out exactly what the quads meant to be doing.
[1804.73] Stephen: So you filter out all the high frequency stuff.
[1807.37] Stephen: But sometimes your frame can be doing a little bit of resonance.
[1811.41] Stephen: So you ideally want to get that frame resonance as high as possible
[1815.01] Stephen: and then move the filters up.
[1816.89] Stephen: And as you move the filters up, you
[1820.73] Stephen: you capture more of things like prop wash.
[1823.57] Stephen: Yeah. So your your PID controller knows about prop wash and confide it.
[1827.29] Stephen: For example, if you have the filters really, really low down,
[1830.93] Stephen: then you're actually hiding prop wash from the flight controller.
[1833.77] Stephen: And so it can't really respond to it.
[1835.29] Stephen: So you get these kind of naff, wobbly effects
[1837.77] Stephen: when you descend into prop wash and things.
[1840.29] Stephen: So ideally you get the frame nice and tight so it doesn't wobble.
[1843.45] Stephen: And then you can move the filters up.
[1845.41] Stephen: And hopefully you won't get any frame resonance if you've got a nice solid frame.
[1849.57] Stephen: And the slide is again, they're helping you move all the filters up at the same time.
[1853.45] Stephen: You don't have to go through those numbers and add a little bit to each one each time.
[1857.49] Stephen: So just, you know, slowly crank up the filters
[1860.49] Stephen: until you get to the point where either you've got a very solid frame
[1863.53] Stephen: or something starts to get a little bit freaky and wobble around
[1866.77] Stephen: and back it off a little bit to the safe point.
[1869.29] Stephen: And then, yeah, go and do PIDS.
[1870.85] Tony: I mean, you can fly round it like
[1875.77] Tony: Joker Vision, who was flying his X-Class.
[1879.89] Tony: He he knows that he can't push it to a certain angle.
[1883.73] Tony: He's like he flew it within the means of what he could do.
[1888.05] Tony: Well, I've got a KISS quad.
[1889.85] Tony: One's really good and one's just a bit funny at a certain point
[1894.17] Tony: where I've tried to tune it.
[1895.25] Tony: I can't get rid of it.
[1897.05] Tony: So it's probably a bad motor or something.
[1899.29] Tony: But I fly around it so I can make it smooth
[1902.13] Tony: and that by just knowing that that quad is just a bit different.
[1906.69] Tony: So there is ways around it.
[1908.61] Tony: You can fly around it.
[1909.73] Stephen: Yeah, sure. You can fly around frock wash and a lot of freestyle pilots,
[1913.33] Stephen: I think they know that if they hold that throttle wide open,
[1916.33] Stephen: their footage doesn't look as good.
[1918.09] Stephen: So I'm very selective about going high throttle and just blip it.
[1921.29] Stephen: They don't hold it wide open, even if the bash will take it. Yeah.

[2076.01] Stephen: And four zero that that was actually much narrower.
[2079.13] Stephen: And you had to tune it to get a good response.
[2080.93] Stephen: And four one that was slightly wider and four two still.
[2083.97] Stephen: And four three is just very generous.
[2085.85] Stephen: And if you've got a five inch, you'll pretty much be guaranteed
[2089.01] Stephen: to fly well out of the box, I think.
[2091.01] Tony: Three five seven is just really good for bigger quads.

[2150.81] Cerb: It wasn't looking twitchy.

[2154.89] Cerb: And just gone smoked the second day.
[2159.61] Cerb: He put the new motor on it because he thought perhaps it smoked
[2162.17] Cerb: because the motor was he had one that was slightly clunky, he thought.
[2167.17] Cerb: But the second day he flew it did three or four laps.

[2171.21] Cerb: And I touched the motor and nearly burnt my fingers.
