[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to … [14.0] Jack: Carlos Campos! [15.0] Jack: Art Faulkner. [16.0] Jack: Sam Dahmer. [17.0] Jack: On with the show. [18.0] Jack: Hello, and you're listening to Let's Drone Out. [56.54] Jack: Right, we are joined by everyone's favourite curry kitten. [60.78] Jack: Hello, my darling wife. [64.54] Jack: John Ryan. [66.7] Jack: And the man with the moustache. [68.98] Jack: Hello, and I'm Brighton Till I Fly. [73.94] Jack: And the man with the moustache is Stephen, aka Bellrick. [78.02] Jack: During lockdown, we've done a AMA where people can ask anything, are you up for doing a [85.98] Jack: bonus pod AMA? [88.3] Stephen: Yeah, if anyone's got any questions, I mean, I'm not shy about questions. [93.98] Stephen: If you've got questions, they're not obscene or personal, I'll answer them in the show. [97.5] Stephen: But if you want to do a bonus pod, whatever, man. [100.3] Jack: Yeah, no worries. [102.74] Jack: So I'm going to put a Discord invite link in to the chat. [111.02] Jack: And if you want to, this will last seven days. [114.42] Jack: And if you want to go there, there is a AMA questions, text feed, and you can post some [124.18] Jack: questions in there if you want to ask Stephen anything. [127.74] Jack: If anything's caught your eye on his bench, like, what's that? [133.46] Jack: Who's that? [134.46] Jack: What's that for? [135.7] Jack: You know, you can ask him, you know, ask him about the lovely Elle who sorted our website [142.74] Stephen: out. [143.74] Stephen: And if you're a new member of our family, we've just got a little doggy. [146.94] Jack: Oh, nice. [147.94] Jack: Where's the dog? [148.94] Stephen: It's very young and it's basically like some kind of Mad Max death trap for young dogs. [158.3] Stephen: There are wires everywhere and they're not supposed to chew electrical cables, which basically [162.14] Stephen: means pretty much the entirety of this floor space is big death trap for a young puppy. [167.14] Stephen: So not in here right now. [169.22] Stephen: Yeah. [170.22] Stephen: What breed? [172.46] Stephen: Josh schnauzer. [173.94] Jack: Hello, Cole. [176.34] Jack: Are you still dying from the weekend or was it the time zone? [182.3] Koel: Sorry that I'm late, guys. [184.34] Koel: And yeah, I just kind of missed track of time and sorry about that, but I'm here now. [190.22] Curry: Not only are you late, Cole, Jack was here early. [193.98] Koel: Whoa. [194.98] Koel: What is happening? [195.98] Koel: No. [196.98] Koel: Surely. [197.98] Koel: I'm late. [199.98] Koel: I'm late. [200.98] Koel: Jack's early. [201.98] Koel: Tony's got a beard. [202.98] Koel: What's happening? [203.98] Koel: What is happening? [206.98] Stephen: More importantly. [208.98] Koel: Oh, what's it? [210.98] Stephen: What about this? [211.98] Koel: That was that was me. [212.98] Koel: Yes, I was I was doing a little bit of trolling in the TVS couch today. [217.98] Koel: It was fun. [219.98] Stephen: So Clive FBV for our audio listeners is asking if if Cole was in fact asking if Trappy and [224.98] Stephen: Wayne snuggle on the TVS couch. [226.98] Stephen: Or if there's some sort of distance limit enforced between the two of them for business [230.98] Stephen: reasons. [232.98] Stephen: Yeah. [233.98] Koel: Yeah, I asked and I was replied with a very firm. [237.98] Koel: No, we don't do that. [242.98] Stephen: We have to wait till the camera stops. [244.98] Koel: Yeah. [246.98] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [247.98] Koel: I was hoping to get a laugh out of it, but it was yeah, it was not received very well. [252.98] Koel: And I'm sorry, guys. [254.98] Koel: I'm I'm so sorry. [257.98] Koel: Oh, no. [258.98] Koel: No, I'm not very sorry. [259.98] Curry: So it's like maybe they they protest a little too much. [263.98] Curry: Really? [265.98] Stephen: Probably got a bit of a sore nerve right now because it apparently has come to pass that [270.98] Stephen: someone's found traces in the TVS code base of a new ESP 32 based receiver. [276.98] Stephen: And that basically means as soon as that's out the gate, some monkey is going to try [280.98] Stephen: and flash express a little rest to it and just sort of it's going to be a big joke. [285.98] Stephen: It's just going to be a memeable from here until kingdom come. [290.98] Koel: Yeah, I was I was I tuned in this morning on it. [293.98] Koel: And I guess someone asked so trap you. [296.98] Koel: What's better? [297.98] Koel: LRS or Tracer? [300.98] Koel: And I mean, that's that's a great question to ask him. [304.98] Stephen: I think handshake or a poke in the eye. [308.98] Koel: Yeah. [309.98] Stephen: Yeah. [310.98] Stephen: That was funny. [312.98] Koel: Yeah. [313.98] Jack: Yeah. [314.98] Jack: But but Tracer is in Lura. [318.98] Jack: You don't know what you want. [320.98] Jack: You don't know. [321.98] Stephen: I think you can do. [323.98] Stephen: They did. [324.98] Stephen: They did a Laura mode on Tracer. [326.98] Stephen: But it was 50 Hertz, I think. [329.98] Stephen: Hmm. [331.98] Stephen: So it's a bit odd. [332.98] Jack: Have you, speaking of, have you seen immersion? [340.09] Jack: I see you have released a 1000 Hertz. [345.09] Jack: Is this the. [348.09] Stephen: 1400. [349.09] Stephen: Well, the race never stopped. [351.09] Stephen: A 1400 milliwatt. [352.09] Stephen: Right. [353.09] Stephen: I heard they're doing 1000 Hertz. [354.09] Stephen: They like get get on board with the obscene speeds and feeds as well. [358.09] Stephen: Yeah. [359.09] Jack: Hang on. [360.09] Jack: I am just looking for it now. [361.09] Jack: The ultimate hybrid, apparently. [365.09] Jack: No, that's the video receiver. [367.09] Stephen: Yeah. [368.09] Stephen: Yeah. [369.09] Stephen: Yeah. [370.09] Stephen: I saw that. [371.09] Stephen: Yeah. [372.09] Stephen: Hang on. [373.09] Stephen: It looks a bit like a vista, doesn't it? [374.09] Jack: Yeah. [375.09] Jack: It's got the 20 by 20 mountain points there. [378.09] Jack: If you're listening to this on an audio podcast, we are live. [383.09] Jack: Every Thursday at 8 to 9 p.m. [385.09] Jack: UK time on YouTube. [388.09] Jack: Let's try now. [390.09] Jack: But yeah, we've got. [393.09] Jack: Export only pirate drone. [395.09] Jack: USA. [397.09] Jack: Yep. [398.09] Jack: Standard mounting pattern for digital VTX. [400.09] Jack: Caddox Vista. [402.09] Jack: It's support success to success. [405.09] Jack: And it's got a 5.8 10 to 1500 milliwatt. [409.09] Jack: Wow. [410.09] Jack: Video transmitter. [412.09] Jack: But the there is an asterisk there, which is one kilo. [417.09] Jack: It's ready for when OpenTX can supply quality data at this rate. [421.09] Jack: Available TX channels and power may vary region to region to comply [425.09] Jack: with local regulations. [427.09] Jack: Nice. [429.09] Koel: You limited to 25 milliwatts. [431.09] Koel: Oh, no. [433.09] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [434.09] Jack: And that's right. [435.09] Jack: Anything in the FPV world. [437.09] Jack: Yeah. [438.09] Jack: Onboard ghost Uno receiver only 10.3 with heat sink. [442.09] Stephen: Why did they do the ghost Uno and not the duo? [446.09] Stephen: If they've got a freaking massive VTX. [449.09] Stephen: Surely you'd want the two aerial receiver. [453.09] Jack: I mean, like I don't feel like this is a big enough product of Warren. [460.09] Jack: Like hassling the Tony to get on. [466.09] Jack: But yeah, you kind of makes you wonder. [469.09] Jack: The two point four gig Lura and FLRC control. [474.09] Jack: What is FLRC control? [477.09] Stephen: It's like the shorter range lower latency cousin to Laura slightly. [482.09] Stephen: It doesn't it doesn't use the chirp spread spectrum, but it does some other funky tricks. [489.09] Stephen: It can manage higher bandwidth. [491.09] Stephen: So instead of Laura, which is pretty low bandwidth, but has great noise tolerance, [496.09] Stephen: it forgoes some of that noise tolerance to increase the bandwidth. [501.09] Curry: The only problem with Immersion RC stuff is they do sell stuff that is locked properly at 25 milliwatts to Europe where most [509.09] Curry: manufacturers have to unlock it, press this button for five seconds. [513.09] Curry: It's a little bit more hassle unlocking stuff from Immersion RC. [517.09] Curry: Is it not unlockable at all, then? [519.09] Curry: I don't know. [520.09] Curry: You've needed a special wand that only Tony has the code to to make it make it different. [529.09] Curry: It's not it's not a case of doing stuff. [532.09] Stephen: Oh, someone's already pointed out that Fox here have a two and a half watt VTX actually looks quite similar to that. [537.09] Stephen: Does anyone have a picture of the Fox here once a hand? [540.09] Stephen: It's got very similar metal enclosure from. [543.09] Curry: I suppose they all look reasonably similar because they need a big old heatsink sat on top. [547.09] Koel: Well, the Reaper, I think, right? [550.09] Stephen: Yeah, the Reaper Reaper extreme. [553.09] Stephen: The Fox here one, it just looks like they're starting to take a cue from some of the design that we've seen with the Vista, [560.09] Stephen: where instead of a rather ropey looking heatsink, it's now kind of an integral heatsink and chassis mounting. [568.09] Curry: It's certainly a better looking fit, isn't it? [570.09] Curry: I've noticed this recently with with other ones. [573.09] Curry: I had one from I think I had a Fox here one, but only went up to like one point six or something. [580.09] Curry: I flew it today, I believe, and that was quite quite a neat shape. [585.09] Koel: Yeah, it's very similar to like that rush solo tank style one. [589.09] Curry: Yeah, yeah, there was a rush solo one. [591.09] Curry: And I was sitting on the one I refused. [594.09] Stephen: So if you really want long range, you probably want to just go straight up to this and then run like a ghost duo or something. [602.09] Stephen: So you get two antennas. [604.09] Stephen: It does look strikingly similar, I thought of the metal casing. [609.09] Stephen: It's got that like two mount system where it's got 20 by 20 and 30 by 30, except it looks like the 20 by 20 doesn't go all the way through the heatsink. [620.09] Stephen: It's just threaded into the heatsink and maybe 30 by 30 is when you take the bolts out to go all the way through. [629.09] Stephen: So, yeah, long range fun with properly encased VTX is because in the past there were a lot of high power VTX is but it usually came down to you better take off quick or have like low power disarm or something like that, because you're going to get that thing up to over 100 degrees sitting on the ground for a few seconds. [647.09] Curry: Otherwise, yeah, I mean, most things, fortunately, at least on 25 milliwatts, which is better than nothing. [657.09] Curry: Although 25 milliwatts, as people tell me all the time, this gets really hot. [662.09] Curry: Yeah, yeah, keep it moving in the air. [664.09] Curry: Yeah, I like it better. [666.09] Stephen: Yeah, standard mounting pattern, not exactly a special one, is it? [672.09] Curry: The one I was thinking of is this one, which is similar ish again. [679.09] Curry: It's not a little bit more of a stripey thing there for the heatsink, but enhance. [684.09] Curry: I can't. There you go. Enhance. No, no, no, subscribe. Five percent. Whoo hoo. Whoo. [693.23] Curry: Yeah, it's it's got these little things that look in the sinky. But yeah, the entire thing was more of a there's there's more of a design thing behind it. I think people are people are learning how to get slightly better VTX designs, at least. [708.23] Curry: Then he goes up to one more. What's the point of that? [712.23] Stephen: Why even bother, honestly? [715.23] Stephen: Thanks to Dominic, by the way, for his kind of input and clean flight and things. [719.23] Stephen: I was actually listening to one of his presentations from many years ago at the gym today when he explained this fascinating new project called Clean Flight to some hackerspace group somewhere. [731.23] Stephen: And it was captured forever on YouTube. [733.23] Stephen: It's pretty interesting to hear him talk about the big ticket items that were coming out for for clean flight. [741.23] Stephen: Some of those have come to pass and some of them are still kind of unfolding now, which is interesting. [745.23] Stephen: Interesting. [748.61] Stephen: But yeah, I think we've mentioned before about base flight and how it was kind of the Wild West. [753.61] Stephen: And yeah, it's pretty interesting to hear that said, it made me want to do just an April the first PR for beta flight where I take all the source files, put them in the directory and give them names like A dot C, B dot C, C dot C, D dot C. [771.98] Stephen: And they call it rebase flight. [774.98] Curry: Of obfuscation flight, just rename all the all the functions to random names. [781.98] Curry: Yeah, that'd be fun. [788.22] Stephen: What's the most important big ticket item that's missing these days? [792.22] Stephen: Well, funny you should ask, I think probably the GPS stuff. [796.22] Stephen: There were a few questions at the end of that talk about like mission planner and things and whether we're going to have altitude hold. [802.22] Stephen: And it looks like with people starting to put 10,000, 20,000 pounds worth of camera gear up on some cine lifters running beta flight that that altitude hold and position hold is starting to really matter to people. [816.22] Stephen: And it's looking like that's going to be like a fail safe alternative in the near future. [821.22] Stephen: I'm not sure about the full mission planning stuff, but at least the ability to say I'm going to fail safe because I've lost control link. [828.22] Stephen: But instead of motor cut, I'm going to go into just a position hold. [833.22] Stephen: And I'm going to trust that you'll probably step out from around the side of that building or put another battery in your radio or whatever it is that's caused the problem. [840.22] Stephen: And I won't just ditch 20 grand worth of camera gear into the concrete. [846.22] Curry: See, I like that. It's like ages ago, people were sort of asking about this and getting told that, oh, you can't do that because there's no there's no compass. [855.22] Curry: And it's like, well, you can you can infer a certain amount, but mostly they were interested in sort of the racing, going fast aspects, going smooth. [862.22] Curry: If it carries on like this, you never know. Ten years from now, Express LRS will have S bus. [869.22] Curry: Because if you asked them now, they'll be like, no, we're not doing that. [872.22] Stephen: Oh, they've already had a big huff about that. I think the official response is to buy a Maytec board that converts CRSF to S bus and just go away. [883.22] Curry: There is there is somebody for the project to do a specific S bus version of it. [890.22] Curry: You never know if he actually does something to it and makes it it could be merged back in, I suppose. [896.22] Stephen: And yeah, Dominic there mentioned Chris Thompson's work on GPS. [902.22] Stephen: And yeah, he's done a ton of work, including using barometer to get better height feedback so that when you're descending and ascending, you can do that a lot smoother. [912.22] Stephen: Increasing the sampling rate for the GPS so that you get better feedback and you can do smoother flight control, just lots of bits and pieces. [920.22] Stephen: Instead of it being like a manned missile, I think we mentioned this before, it now just comes back and descends, doesn't smash into the ground, just descends, hits the ground gently and switches the motors off. [935.22] Stephen: Instead of sort of either diving into the ground and viciously bouncing or failing to turn the motors off when it tapped the ground or descending in a kind of oscillating crazy mad bat sort of way. [952.22] Curry: Yeah, it's looking a lot better. [954.22] Curry: It's just reminded me of videos I've seen where you've had things return to home and then go down, but refuse to disarm and I've seen people holding sticks over it. [966.22] Curry: Someone trying to trying to crawl under to get the battery and trying to hit it to death until it stops. [972.22] Curry: All good fun. [974.22] Stephen: Yeah. [975.22] Stephen: Yeah, so there's there's a lot of stuff in there. [977.22] Stephen: There's also been a lot of reviewing of the old code, which I think is it's not sexy and it's not new features, but there's been a lot of let's look at the arming conditions and figure out what is actually causing arming or disarming to happen. [992.22] Stephen: And a lot of that was not really hadn't been revisited in a while. [996.22] Stephen: And there were situations like, oh, oh, look at this. [999.22] Stephen: This is interesting. [1000.22] Stephen: You could have a GPS lock, be cleared to do your return to home. [1005.22] Stephen: And then when you went into GPS return to home, you could be in a situation where you actually didn't have enough satellites and you hadn't told the user and it just straight up disarms and falls out the sky. [1019.22] Curry: This is good news, because for a long time, be the flight was all about. [1023.22] Curry: Let's put exciting, busy features in and have a release every two days. [1027.22] Curry: And it starts to look like a bit more of a sensible project where it's actually like, well, let's go back and review some code and see what needs to be looked at there and see if we need to make some changes and make things more efficient and take stuff out that doesn't need to be there. [1042.22] Curry: They could do that with the documentation as well. [1044.22] Curry: If they fancy having a good go at that, that would be quite nice. [1048.22] Stephen: Yeah. [1049.22] Stephen: So looking at that at work, actually, how easy it is to do GitHub pages sites where you have like a Git repo that's all marked down and you put a markdown processor on it and generate a bunch of HTML. [1062.22] Stephen: The Express LRS project does this. [1064.22] Stephen: In fact, if you go to express lrs.org, that site is generated from one of their Git repos, but it looks really nice and it's got a dropdown. [1072.22] Stephen: So you can say I'm using Express LRS version one, two or three, and it's all very nicely laid out. [1078.22] Stephen: It doesn't look like typical developer programmer documentation. [1082.22] Stephen: It looks really nice. [1083.22] Stephen: So that might be something that could be done. [1086.22] Stephen: Let's hope so. [1088.22] Stephen: LRS V3. [1090.22] Curry: Finally. [1092.22] Curry: I saw that. [1093.22] Curry: I haven't. [1094.22] Curry: I haven't quite upgraded yet because I was out today testing out my new Radiomaster TX 12 Mark two. [1102.22] Curry: And I think they are two point six on it. [1104.22] Curry: And I thought I'll fly that before I come back and do all my updates because I got a whole bunch of modules and radios and bits and pieces to update. [1111.22] Curry: But that's quite a nice radio. [1113.22] Curry: I think you'd like it, Stephen, because you quite like that form factor, don't you? [1117.22] Curry: Which one's that? [1118.22] Curry: The TX 12 E2. [1119.22] Curry: The TX 12, yeah. [1122.22] Curry: It's got very nice gimbals. [1123.22] Curry: I tried to make the gimbals fail and everything I did, flicking it back and messing around with them, bashing them. [1129.22] Curry: They just went straight back to fifteen hundred G6 on the flight. [1133.22] Stephen: Yeah, it's got the same gimbals as the Zorro's got. [1135.22] Stephen: Interestingly enough, if you buy them as separate parts, they're almost as good quality as the AGO 1 Minis. [1143.22] Stephen: But I think they're like six dollars each or something. [1145.22] Stephen: I've got a set there I was going to put into my tea light. [1149.22] Stephen: Yeah. [1150.22] Curry: Apparently the... [1152.22] Koel: Yeah. [1154.22] Koel: I'm going to say, apparently the new Tango 2 and Tango 2 Pros have new gimbals in them, according to Trappy on the TBS couch this morning. [1165.22] Koel: Any of the new tangos that are shipping out or on pre-order will have the new gimbals in it, so it's interesting. [1172.22] Koel: But I guess they're still not CNC Hall Effect gimbals. [1180.22] Curry: These were Hall Effect gimbals, but I do find... [1183.22] Curry: Hall Effect. [1185.22] Curry: No matter what the gimbal is, the feel of it mostly comes from the spring, [1193.22] Curry: which you still can't get away from. [1195.22] Curry: I mean, the fact it's very accurate and always comes back is very nice. [1199.22] Curry: But I never feel that much of a difference between cheapo stuff and expensive stuff from that point of view. [1206.22] Curry: Do you see this one, guys? [1208.22] Curry: Elysium. [1210.22] Curry: I don't know if anyone... [1211.22] Curry: Sorry, what do you see? [1213.22] Curry: It's cyberpunk radio. [1217.22] Curry: Someone's getting influenced by putting an Android phone in the middle of a radio and making it like something a 13-year-old would design to say this is what the future looks like. [1228.22] Stephen: You remember what this is based off, right? Do you remember the original one? [1233.22] Curry: The Tango one. [1235.22] Curry: The... [1236.22] Curry: No, the... [1238.22] Stephen: Nirvana. [1239.22] Stephen: Nirvana, that's it. [1240.22] Stephen: Yeah, there you are. [1241.22] Stephen: So that was an N14, I think, or NV14, something like that, by Flysky. [1246.22] Stephen: And they don't release radios very often. [1248.22] Stephen: They release a lot of quite cheapo, nasty transmitters for service vehicles. [1252.22] Stephen: But this guy is supposed to have some quite fantastic gimbals, and you get the CNC machine gimbals as standard. [1259.22] Stephen: You get this weird mobile phone portrait orientation screen, but it's a color touch screen. [1265.22] Stephen: They've moved from micro USB to USB-C for charging. [1270.22] Stephen: It just looks quite nice. The red paint job is somewhat ostentatious, but it was black before, I guess they felt they had to make it really obvious it was new, rather than having to sort of peer at it to see what the difference was. [1282.22] Koel: The handles look very long. [1285.22] Jack: Yeah, so each handle's got the 18650 wedged in there. [1292.22] Jack: Ah, battery power, that's how it works. [1294.22] Curry: Yeah, and they may always... [1298.22] Curry: Sorry, I was saying, NJ was always very keen on the gimbals of the radio. [1303.22] Curry: Well, it took a long time to produce something worthy. At least it's just running SGX now, is it? [1309.22] Stephen: It's an interesting sort of switch layout. Unlike a lot of radios, they've got the piston, I don't know, gamepad style, but then they've got a couple of pots on there as well. [1319.22] Stephen: They've got an interesting layout. It's not a layout that anyone else has done. [1324.22] Stephen: Maybe it doesn't work for everyone, but it's interesting to see the variety, I think. [1329.22] Curry: The pots in kind of an odd place. You'd expect side sliders, rather, because having to sort of... I'm going to have to take my hand off a stick and do this instead of something else. [1340.22] Stephen: Pots always feel like they're in odd locations for me, though. That's why mine are just, like, volume controlled and brightness controlled. I can't imagine actually using them. [1349.22] Stephen: On the TX16, they're right at the top of the radio, and the sticks are quite a distance below them, so you'd have to do the same awkward stretch on the TX16, I think. [1360.22] Curry: See, I used to use them on, like, my original Tyrannus flying plane, but that's like, you take your hands off, the plane carries on, and you just, like, twiddle around on your pan. [1368.22] Curry: That's different. You don't really think about these controls on a quad so much. [1374.22] Stephen: That's why I think they are basically brightness and volume controls for the TX16. [1379.22] Stephen: Could be. [1380.22] Curry: What was the picture of a bit of GPS from... [1384.22] Jack: Yeah, DJI, yeah. [1386.22] Jack: Oh, yeah. If you... [1388.22] Jack: Smashed. [1389.22] Jack: If the... [1390.22] Jack: Put it back up. [1391.22] Jack: If you're in the Discord, this was in Robin's gossip corner. [1398.22] Jack: Someone has had a bad landing. [1400.22] Jack: Yeah, and the weird thing is, is I really recognise the... [1406.22] Jack: Bad piloting park. [1408.22] Jack: It really does look like a... [1410.22] Stephen: Looks like a generic M8 sort of thing. [1413.22] Jack: Yeah. [1414.22] Stephen: The antennas all look the same, don't they? [1417.22] Jack: Yeah, but as you can see, like, the... [1420.22] Jack: You know, the lens has come off. [1424.22] Jack: Yeah. [1425.22] Stephen: They actually shattered the ceramic antenna on the GPS. [1428.22] Stephen: Yeah. [1429.22] Stephen: I've seen a lot of crashes. I've never seen anyone shatter the GPS antenna. [1432.22] Stephen: That is a very accurate crash. [1434.22] Stephen: That looks like an LED. [1435.22] Curry: Onto a pointy thing. [1436.22] Stephen: Yeah, really. [1437.22] Jack: Yeah, and obviously the top's been smashed out, so I'm guessing that's what that blasting is. [1442.22] Stephen: They didn't crack the prop guards. [1444.22] Stephen: How did you manage to shatter the GPS antenna and leave the prop guards intact? [1449.22] Stephen: Upside down. [1450.22] Stephen: What kind of freak crash is that? [1452.22] Curry: Yeah, that's a pretty weird crash. [1454.22] Curry: Yeah. [1455.22] Curry: Upside down onto, like, a railing. [1457.22] Curry: You know those railings with the pointy edge? [1459.22] Curry: He smacks it straight on there. [1461.22] Curry: Huh. [1462.22] Stephen: Yeah. [1463.22] Jack: And that's what's... [1464.22] Jack: A lot of force. [1465.22] Jack: They've got some braided cable there, and that's what's left of the sensor. [1469.22] Jack: So it's a shame we didn't really get a good look at DGI care. [1472.22] Koel: DGI care. [1474.22] Koel: Yeah, hopefully they had that refresh. [1476.22] Stephen: DGI care is a misnomer. [1479.22] Stephen: DGI doesn't care. [1482.22] Stephen: DGI will attempt team service, yeah. [1486.22] Koel: Yeah, my experience with them is if you pay them, they care. [1490.22] Koel: If you don't pay them, they might care, even if you don't pay them. [1493.22] Curry: They're not a charity. [1495.22] Curry: Yeah. [1496.22] Curry: Well, you only care when you pay them. [1498.22] Curry: They're prostitutes, surely. [1501.22] Koel: Well, you know what? [1502.22] Koel: No, I've actually... [1503.22] Koel: There's been some circumstances where even things that have been outside of warranty, [1507.22] Koel: kind of like what Apple does, like sometimes out of the goodness of XYZ employees' heart, [1515.22] Koel: they'll wave this as a one-time gesture kind of thing. [1520.22] Curry: So you've had Apple do stuff for you for nothing. [1524.22] Koel: I have sometimes, yeah, actually. [1527.22] Koel: Like I had a battery replaced one time where it was outside of warranty, [1532.22] Koel: just in an iPhone, but it was outside of warranty, [1535.22] Koel: and the battery health or whatever was way below what it should have been [1541.22] Koel: based on how long outside of warranty it was, [1544.22] Koel: and they just did it for me, and it was no big deal. [1548.22] Stephen: Wow. [1549.22] Stephen: Was that roughly the time where they had a class-action lawsuit about fighting battery health? [1554.22] Stephen: Was it round about that time? [1556.22] Koel: You know what? [1557.22] Koel: It very well could have been, and yeah. [1562.22] Jack: Yeah. [1565.22] Curry: I got a weird... [1566.22] Curry: I was asking about the GoPro. [1568.22] Curry: We didn't start it. [1569.22] Stephen: No, GoPro. [1570.22] Stephen: I got a weird... [1572.22] Jack: I'll set a timer for 10 minutes. [1576.22] Stephen: I was going to derail this. [1578.22] Stephen: I got a 21700 3S, and it's got a little built-in battery checker. [1586.22] Stephen: That's cool. [1587.22] Stephen: I thought that was pretty neat. [1589.22] Stephen: It's 4800 Mar 3S, so about two days of forgetting to switch your vocals off, I think, probably. [1597.22] Stephen: Not too bad. [1598.22] Stephen: That's not bad. [1599.22] Stephen: That's not too bad. [1600.22] Curry: All right, then. [1601.22] Curry: People, quick GoPro alert. [1603.22] Curry: GoPro reaction. [1604.22] Curry: GoPro alert. [1605.22] Curry: Should we do the main one first, or are we going straight to the mini? [1609.22] Koel: Well, let's get straight to the mini, because who said last week that it wasn't real? [1614.22] Koel: Someone was like, no, that's not a real thing. [1616.22] Koel: Was that Jack? [1617.22] Koel: That was me, I think. [1618.22] Stephen: I was like, I don't even... [1620.22] Stephen: Oh, yeah. [1621.22] Stephen: You were saying it was a render, weren't you? [1623.22] Stephen: You were saying that switch your Photoshop. [1625.22] Stephen: It was a render, but then it was a render of a real product, it appears. [1629.22] Stephen: I'm still totally not interested in this product. [1632.22] Stephen: After hearing about what's it, it's 130 grams or something? [1636.22] Koel: Yeah, 133, if you take off the legs or whatever, you get a couple grams off, but then it's [1642.22] Koel: basically the same thing as the full size 11, if you do the battery, whatever, removal. [1649.22] Stephen: I checked my GoPro Hero 8 with the case and the back. [1655.22] Stephen: Without bothering to take the case off, and the back, and of course the microSD for the [1661.22] Stephen: pittance that adds, that is 118 grams, and it's a full GoPro Hero 8. [1666.22] Stephen: So, how have they ended up being like 15 grams more than this? [1671.22] Curry: Without screens and... [1673.22] Curry: Yeah. [1674.22] Curry: Don't forget the amazing battery that you can't remove. [1677.22] Koel: Yeah. [1678.22] Curry: It's a special battery. [1680.22] Koel: Well, it's a... [1682.22] Stephen: It's a guarantee you need to buy a new one every year when your battery dies. [1685.22] Stephen: That's what it is. [1687.22] Koel: I mean, I still have Hero 5 sessions that batteries are fine, so I think that the batteries [1691.22] Koel: will be fine. [1692.22] Koel: You don't... [1693.22] Stephen: Oh, I appreciate you crack yours open and replace the batteries or something. [1696.22] Stephen: No? [1697.22] Koel: No, no. [1698.22] Koel: Yeah, no, they're still going strong. [1700.22] Koel: You know, it's actually really strange about one of my sessions is that if I have an SD [1704.22] Koel: card in the SD card slot, and it's not on, it's just hanging out in the cupboard or whatever [1710.22] Koel: in the desk, the battery drains itself. [1713.22] Koel: If I don't have the SD card in it and the battery's off, it doesn't drain itself. [1717.22] Koel: So, something funky is going on with that, but I have three other sessions that are going [1723.22] Koel: strong, so still holding charge and still... [1727.22] Curry: Does anybody have a GoPro subscription? [1730.22] Curry: I had one because when my wife bought me my GoPro 10 for Christmas, you get it for cheaper [1736.22] Curry: if you get it, so you basically get it and cancel it. [1739.22] Curry: But I actually tried letting it update stuff while I was away on holiday doing underwater [1744.22] Curry: stuff, and it was us. [1746.22] Curry: It didn't update... [1748.22] Curry: It managed to, like, transfer about two files out of a hundred. [1752.22] Curry: It's just pathetic. [1754.22] Stephen: You're better off just taking the card and plugging it into a USB port on your Android [1760.22] Stephen: phone and using YouTube or something. [1763.22] Stephen: Well, you lost me there on Android phone, but yeah, I just... [1766.22] Stephen: Something that has an SD card, yeah. [1769.22] Stephen: Yeah, that's fair. [1771.22] Stephen: That is a good point, Stephen. [1773.22] Stephen: That's what I've done on holiday. [1775.22] Stephen: You go out, get some pictures, and you plug things into a tablet via USB OTG or just shove [1781.22] Stephen: it in the SD card slot and synchronize that to whatever your photo storage is on the tablet. [1786.22] Stephen: Leave that charging and come back. [1788.22] Curry: Yeah, but they just show this as this amazing thing where it's just, it will update for [1792.22] Curry: you. [1793.22] Curry: It's like if you have Wi-Fi on, it's like it had to drain your battery, and then it's [1798.22] Curry: like, oh, by the way, we're filming all these amazing locations. [1802.22] Curry: Do you have any Wi-Fi here? [1804.22] Curry: No. [1805.22] Curry: But what did you guys think of the big camera? [1807.22] Curry: Because that was a very small, incremental upgrade into a couple of extra modes like... [1813.22] Koel: Yeah, I mean, what is the major... [1817.22] Koel: Oh, the HyperView, I guess that's another thing, right? [1820.22] Curry: HyperView instead of SuperView, it got wider, which looks quite pretty, but nothing amazing. [1826.22] Stephen: Internally, is it a different sensor? [1829.22] Stephen: Have they just tweaked the algorithm? [1831.22] Stephen: I think it is. [1832.22] Stephen: I think it is the sensor. [1833.22] Stephen: The sensor's taller. [1835.22] Koel: Yeah, it's like an 8 by something weird. [1838.22] Curry: 8 by 7 or something? [1839.22] Koel: Yeah, 8 by 7 aspect ratio, which is basically a completely new, unheard of. [1846.22] Koel: Actually, one of those weird things that I saw on the YouTube, on GoPro's YouTube thing, [1851.22] Koel: was someone was asking, hey, well, sorry, actually, I digress. [1854.22] Koel: Sorry about this to go back to the Mini, but something that I thought that was strange [1858.22] Koel: about the Mini, it has no photo mode. [1862.22] Koel: When did you ever use the photo mode? [1866.22] Koel: Yeah. [1867.22] Curry: When we're out, I put it on burst mode and do this. [1872.22] Curry: Wherever we are, then we've got a bunch of photos and we can choose one of them. [1876.22] Koel: Or make a GIF out of it or whatever. [1879.22] Koel: Well, GoPro's response, though, on their YouTube thing about someone asking, [1883.22] Koel: hey, why does it do photo mode? [1885.22] Koel: They said, well, it's a 27 megapixel sensor, you can do a screen grab. [1889.22] Koel: But my argument there was, well, if you're shooting video and you're shooting video [1894.22] Koel: with the proper, and I put quotations, proper shutter speed, [1898.22] Koel: and you're following the 180 degree rule, then all of your frames are going to have motion blur. [1903.22] Koel: So how could you get a proper screen grab out of it? [1906.22] Stephen: Don't use motion blur. [1908.22] Koel: Yeah. [1910.22] Koel: Yeah. [1911.22] Koel: I mean, to be honest, I feel like not many people even do because it's kind of a pain to really, [1917.22] Stephen: you know, it's kind of for one of those silent divisions. [1920.22] Stephen: And there's not many of them that are silent, but in the FPV community, [1923.22] Stephen: there are people who are nuts about getting the right ND filters and setting exposures. [1927.22] Stephen: And there's people who are just like, I'm in the Arctic camp, I'm afraid to say. [1933.22] Koel: Certain use cases. [1934.22] Koel: I mean, with the session or with something that doesn't have a screen. [1938.22] Koel: Good luck. [1939.22] Koel: You're going to be doing this whole like Bluetooth thing to the app. [1943.22] Koel: And let's monitor it from my phone and, okay, let's add some more NDs on the front. [1946.22] Koel: Okay. [1947.22] Koel: Now let's fiddle around with this. [1948.22] Koel: It's like, no. [1949.22] Koel: Who's going to sit there for 20 minutes trying to get the proper exposure just for it to [1953.22] Koel: change because the earth decides to turn a little bit? [1956.22] Koel: You know what I mean? [1957.22] Koel: Nobody. [1958.22] Curry: But talking of the earth turning, the mini also doesn't have the starlight modes. [1964.22] Curry: So you can't get star trails if you do a time lapse in the sky at night. [1969.22] Curry: That's going to be purely an arbitrary limitation because the processor would be the same. [1974.22] Curry: Sure. [1975.22] Curry: I don't know why. [1976.22] Curry: It's like it's like they've deliberately taken it out. [1979.22] Curry: Perhaps it's too complex to think about on the little piddly menu they've got. [1983.22] Curry: Well, not to mention it's still. [1986.22] Koel: Well, yeah, not to mention it's like I'm speaking in Canadian terms, but it's still $530. [1993.06] Koel: Like that is a lot of money for, you know, for anything, any kind of action camera, let [1999.06] Koel: alone one that doesn't have any screens or a photo mode or any other feature or some [2004.32] Koel: of the features that are in, you know, there are other really expensive cameras. [2007.2] Stephen: Is it better than the Action 2? [2009.44] Stephen: Will it sway anyone away from the Action 2 or is it still just too expensive to do that? [2015.0] Koel: Well, the Hyper View is probably like, you know, in that same realm as Action 2 is like [2019.68] Koel: super crazy view, whatever you want to call it. [2023.8] Koel: But I don't know. [2025.8] Koel: That's a whole other debate, I think. [2027.8] Koel: Yeah. [2028.8] Jack: That is a lot of money, isn't it? [2030.48] Jack: Really distract to record. [2032.72] Koel: Well, I mean, yeah, well, how much do you think, I mean, again, here comes a hypothetical [2039.0] Koel: train, session six, like how much is that going to be if it even exists? [2044.0] Curry: It's not going to happen. [2045.0] Curry: Yeah. [2046.0] Curry: It's not going to happen. [2047.0] Curry: They've just brought out the DJI Mini. [2048.0] Curry: That's all they need. [2049.0] Curry: Yeah. [2050.0] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, downloaded and edited to [2054.4] Frank: make sense when it played audio only, censored to please the iTunes people, hosted on the [2059.2] Frank: Internet, forwarded through to your podcast provider, downloaded, playing on your device [2063.4] Frank: and is now playing in your ears. [2065.36] Frank: All thanks to our Patreons. [2067.76] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. [2071.0] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash. [2074.12] Frank: Let's drone out. [2075.12] Stephen: If we're doing conspiracy theories that there's one like they just didn't bother to test it [2080.4] Stephen: so they couldn't say they could do it or I don't know, equally so. [2085.0] Stephen: Maybe it's smaller and it just can't dissipate the heat for some of the fancy modes. [2090.04] Stephen: If you're going to be sitting there and running a CPU flat out all the time instead of just [2093.84] Stephen: 100 milliseconds here and there. [2095.92] Curry: Yeah. [2096.92] Curry: Well, I wonder if they fix that because the 10 had a tendency to overheat under certain [2101.28] Curry: conditions like filming high frame rates in 4K if you weren't sat in the Arctic Circle. [2109.48] Jack: The 8 had a weird thing where it doesn't like the cold weather. [2116.45] Curry: The batteries don't like the cold weather. [2118.89] Curry: When I'm skiing, it's like, oh, this this lasted for half an hour. [2122.05] Curry: It's mostly that's because the snows, the GoPros in the snow because I've fallen over [2126.61] Curry: and drank it through. [2127.61] Curry: So it gets a bit colder. [2129.13] Curry: But it's it's it's pretty bad. [2131.45] Koel: Yeah, it's the same as my camera batteries, even my DJI Mavic batteries, just they all [2138.09] Koel: just kind of suck in the winter, especially in Canada. [2140.41] Jack: Yeah, well, it's like half cold, isn't it really? [2144.21] Jack: It's like, you know, we can play like you guys can play. [2148.13] Koel: Oh, it's zero degrees outside today. [2150.77] Jack: We've got three people are dead already. [2154.41] Koel: Ice. [2155.41] UNKNOWN: Yeah, no. [2156.41] Jack: You have to look back here in Canada. [2160.13] Koel: We got we got snow up to our chest and we got to walk uphill both ways just to get the [2164.61] Stephen: school and you're outside like grilling outside shovel snow out of the way and off you go. [2171.21] Koel: Oh, yeah. [2172.21] Koel: And we help our neighbors and all that. [2174.05] Curry: It just depends what you're used to. [2176.69] Curry: When I was in Austin working some years ago now, they had an ice storm. [2182.77] Curry: They called it and they had it flashed up on the ice storm warning. [2185.97] Curry: We would have called it a bit of a frosty day. [2188.49] Curry: But the Texans weren't weren't used to this. [2191.09] Curry: So within the state of an hour, they'd had fifteen hundred car accidents in one stretch [2195.97] Curry: of freeway. [2196.97] Curry: And it's like all the businesses close. [2200.09] Curry: It's like save yourselves. [2202.09] Stephen: It didn't bend any of the road, which will drain each, did they in Texas? [2206.93] Stephen: So whenever they have like any amount of rain, it just floods everywhere. [2211.57] Curry: The problem is, no, they don't do it. [2213.11] Curry: So the water runs down under the freeway bridges and freezes there. [2218.05] Curry: And then they just drive along in there at Ford F-150s, which are only two wheel drive [2221.69] Curry: and just doing their normal like 1980s tech. [2225.89] Stephen: And then everyone dies. [2228.97] Stephen: Yeah, I was there when there was a snow storm, which was like just below zero and I was flying [2236.03] Stephen: out of Austin, Austin Bergstrom Airport. [2240.49] Stephen: And they're like, oh, yeah, OK, right. [2242.69] Stephen: We will need to de-ice the planes before we take off and we waited. [2247.45] Stephen: And then there was an announcement. [2249.71] Stephen: We apologize. [2251.11] Stephen: It appears that in an attempting to bring the ISER equipment online, we've broken it. [2261.69] Stephen: We sent out for more de-icing equipment and they apparently just didn't know how the de-icers [2267.59] Stephen: works and they broke them when they tried to get them out and use them. [2270.97] Stephen: So to go get more de-icers, it's a price, a price. [2277.15] Jack: Yeah. [2278.15] Stephen: If you're not sure. [2279.15] Stephen: It's a long time sitting on the wrong way. [2281.99] Jack: Oh, well, they'd like to see when you move that they exploded. [2289.19] Stephen: I just imagine people in the airport like, what the heck is this crunch smash? [2298.34] Jack: Wrong kind of leaves on the lines, you know, the good old leaves. [2304.1] Curry: I went out flying today. [2305.58] Curry: It made me laugh about like the new GoPro. [2307.7] Curry: It's got 10-bit color. [2308.7] Curry: I was like, I need about four bits to do gray, different gray and slightly different gray [2313.5] Curry: out here. [2314.5] Curry: That'll do me. [2315.5] Curry: I don't need a very expensive sensor today, but it wasn't raining. [2320.38] Stephen: That's where the 10-bit color comes in, Curry, because if you go back to the days of 16-bit [2325.06] Stephen: color, people might remember seeing sky where you'd have like bands of color. [2332.18] Stephen: You could see the different shades and that's literally where the 10-bit color comes in. [2336.42] Stephen: So you don't start to reminisce now. [2338.74] Curry: I used to brag on those on the copper and the amigas like nice shades of blue coming [2343.34] Curry: down. [2344.34] Stephen: Yeah. [2345.34] Curry: Lovely. [2346.34] Stephen: Only because you didn't have many gradients, you'd have like a quarter of the sky is one [2349.3] Curry: color and the next quarter of the sky is another color. [2354.62] Curry: Start dithering. [2355.62] Curry: This is what it needs. [2356.62] Curry: It just needs a bit of dithering. [2357.62] Curry: It doesn't need more bits. [2358.62] Koel: Oh God. [2359.62] Koel: Yeah. [2360.62] Koel: I see everyone going so crazy. [2362.54] Koel: Wow. [2363.54] Koel: It has 10-bit. [2364.54] Koel: I can color grade now and make the most cinematic videos and I'm like, oh my God, people need [2368.98] Koel: to stop using the word cinematic. [2372.94] Stephen: Let's render it all at 24 frames a second and put film grain on it. [2377.18] Stephen: It's cinematic. [2378.18] Koel: Oh, and if we boost the blues just slightly, oh, it's so cinematic. [2385.06] Koel: Ooh, look at this cinematic video, guys. [2387.1] Koel: It's so amazing. [2388.78] Stephen: Just looks like one of those TVs in the showroom where everything's like turned up to 11 and [2394.26] Stephen: your eyes are watering and you try and look at it. [2397.02] Koel: Yeah. [2398.02] Koel: Yeah. [2399.02] Koel: I don't know. [2400.02] Koel: I get a laugh out of that whole cinematic term. [2402.1] Koel: It seems to be overused now and even some brands, I think there was some new cinelifter [2411.62] Koel: flight controller ESC, whatever it's got, it can be like an Octo, whatever, ESC or flight [2418.38] Koel: controller combo. [2419.78] Koel: It's called cinematic, duh, duh, duh, duh. [2423.78] Koel: Basically anything could be considered cinematic if you fly it that way or if you edit it that [2431.02] Koel: way. [2432.02] Koel: Putting a whole blanket statement on the term cinematic is just such a buzzword these days. [2436.14] Stephen: I've got cinematic motors. [2439.18] Koel: Wow, are those in the movies, dude? [2444.22] Stephen: They are. [2446.22] Stephen: 2809s, I thought my seven inch needed a bit more pop, so I got a set of 2809s. [2454.06] Stephen: I really wanted to run the 2807s on ATES, but it wasn't happening. [2458.86] Stephen: Apparently, these puppies are going to desync less, so I thought I'd give them a whirl. [2463.9] Koel: Those are going to put you in Hollywood, man. [2466.06] Stephen: I'm going to be in Hollywood just automatically. [2468.46] Stephen: I'll put my freaking GoPro on there, fly around the park and do it like a few rolls. [2473.38] Stephen: I'm going to just, yeah, Sundance instantly. [2476.98] Stephen: Oh, God. [2477.98] Curry: Yeah, no problem. [2479.98] Curry: See you at Cannes. [2482.98] Curry: This is a rapid change of subject here. [2486.18] Curry: I see Steven's printer in the background. [2487.86] Curry: Now, what do you want to call the ones with the cables that do the thing? [2490.86] Stephen: Delta. [2491.86] Curry: It's a delta. [2492.86] Curry: So instead of an XY, it's got three arms and it kind of prints in a circle. [2497.74] Curry: So I was in one of my many university visits and I've talked previously, I think I've definitely [2504.3] Curry: talked to Frank about it, about how people in product design degrees don't need to demonstrate [2511.74] Curry: there's any use for their item. [2513.94] Curry: They just have to decide there's a need. [2516.34] Curry: What I saw, I went WTF, so it's editor friendly. [2522.14] Curry: It's basically a guy attached a delta printer to a very large quad, flew it to a hole in [2529.9] Curry: the road and proceeded to 3D print into the hole and called it a drone hole repair road [2537.18] Curry: thing. [2538.18] Curry: That was his product. [2539.18] Curry: I don't think that was product design. [2540.46] Curry: I think it was actually part of the mechanical engineering degree. [2544.46] Curry: And it just struck me as like, you don't need to have like a market for it or say this is [2552.06] Curry: something that can be used because it's passed all the definite tests that would happen. [2557.42] Curry: They just have to imagine something wacky and build it. [2560.18] Curry: Here's your degree. [2561.18] Stephen: You could accomplish much the same thing with a board bloke called Fred who walks up with [2565.42] Stephen: a can of expanding foam, scratches his arse and sprays the expanding foam into the hole [2570.22] Stephen: in the road, both faster and cheaper and more effective. [2575.06] Curry: That was my argument, but last time I actually went to one of these product design shows [2579.14] Curry: because I had to come to my daughter and somebody had a quad there, which I proceeded to ask [2583.26] Curry: him difficult questions about. [2585.18] Curry: And eventually it came out with the fact, because he was basically saying it's a drone [2589.38] Curry: delivery. [2590.38] Curry: I was like, okay, so you got legal for this? [2591.94] Curry: No, no. [2592.94] Curry: If this ever went into this, we'd do this. [2595.06] Curry: And I said, well, what about the efficiency of it? [2596.98] Curry: Have you looked at wings and things like sort of the Google drone? [2600.26] Curry: No, I didn't look at other researchers. [2602.26] Curry: So what did you do? [2603.26] Curry: And essentially he printed the arms with holes in them in order to reduce the weight to make [2609.1] Curry: it more efficient, which is like, again, it's not really going above and beyond, but you [2614.34] Curry: know, if you can do that as a fun project and get a degree from it, it's quite good, [2620.38] Curry: I suppose. [2621.38] Curry: What fun is what I'm learning about degrees. [2623.3] Curry: I'm quite sad I didn't go to university now. [2626.34] Stephen: But I don't have the phenomenal id and ego necessary to just assume that I've not looked [2631.7] Stephen: at anyone else's work, and therefore mine must be the best ever. [2635.3] Stephen: And then go and sell it. [2636.3] Stephen: That would be incredible. [2637.3] Stephen: It could make so much money. [2639.18] Curry: I don't think it's trying to sell it, but it's very interesting. [2641.14] Curry: If you turn up on these shows, which Frank knew about them, because he was, he been at [2645.9] Curry: these things, it's called the design show in London. [2649.22] Curry: They instantly think, if you're not a student, obviously, like me, they think you might be [2654.22] Curry: from industry and interested in their invention. [2656.58] Curry: And they're very excited to come and talk to you and tell you all about it. [2660.1] Curry: And then you say, no, I'm just I'm here. [2662.1] Curry: This one's going to university. [2663.1] Curry: And I'm like, okay, I think I get sad again. [2666.94] Curry: Nevermind. [2667.94] Curry: Burst some bubbles. [2668.94] Curry: It's all good. [2669.94] Curry: You should lie. [2670.94] Curry: Sorry. [2671.94] Curry: That was just I just saw the doubt printer there that reminded me of that. [2675.9] Curry: I was just going around this mechanical engineering lab saying this is stupid. [2680.42] Curry: It's a it's a nice little printer. [2683.3] Curry: Attaches to a quad, then go fill some holes. [2685.02] Curry: Oh, yeah. [2687.7] Curry: I don't think I ever worked out how he decided what the G code would be for it. [2691.3] Curry: He's just starting spurting out his filament. [2695.38] Stephen: Does Cole get his badly printed GoPro mount? [2699.02] Koel: Oh, yes, they did arrive. [2700.98] Koel: I forgot. I totally forgot to mention that. [2704.06] Koel: Yeah, I've got them with all the rest of my stuff and plan to use them next time I go out [2708.86] Koel: and fly. I haven't flown in like two weeks. [2710.54] Koel: So, yeah, it's it's haven't even had a chance to even really look at my quads. [2715.82] Koel: I've been so busy, but, yeah, going to going to chuck up those [2720.82] Koel: those on my quad, throw my session in there and actually let it rip. [2724.98] Koel: Yeah, I'm excited for that. [2726.14] Koel: Thanks, man. [2727.54] Jack: So this is yeah, yeah. [2730.14] Jack: Also, as soon as we've got the very lovely [2736.14] Jack: Alexander Fedorov. [2738.26] Jack: Uh, who appeared? [2742.1] Jack: Hello, evening. [2743.34] Jack: Good evening. [2745.02] Jack: So, yeah, this is the KISS Ultra [2749.38] Jack: Instagram. Give them a follow, but KISS Ultra SC. [2753.14] Jack: And, yeah, we've got the new V2 [2757.1] Jack: coming. [2758.42] Jack: Nice. [2759.7] Jack: In. So that's. [2762.26] Curry: So do these have OSDs yet? [2766.34] Jack: I. Yeah, yeah. [2767.62] Jack: Yeah. [2768.62] Jack: KISS E1, the KISS Ultra V1. [2772.1] Stephen: Does it have a high volt back that you can actually use with a Vista? [2776.18] Jack: I don't know. [2777.22] Stephen: But here we have the FETEC one says it's got a 16 volt back, [2781.54] Stephen: but it's not recommended to use it for your Vista. [2783.86] Stephen: So I don't know what the hell. [2785.54] Koel: Yeah, FETEC is different than Ultra, though. [2788.26] Stephen: Yeah, I know. I was just wondering. [2790.7] Stephen: That doesn't look like there is a back. [2793.34] Jack: OK. [2794.02] Jack: Added protection on all data lines, [2796.02] Jack: added ESD protection on U.S. [2799.66] Jack: U.S.O. connection. [2802.46] Jack: Change 5 volt back, 1.7 amps to 2 amps. [2806.74] Jack: Capable elevators. [2807.74] Jack: And after power buzzers, VTX and camera. [2810.78] Jack: It's success rated, but capable of 8S and 9. [2816.58] Jack: Two centro. [2817.58] Jack: Interesting gyro choice. [2819.58] Jack: Yeah. [2820.58] Jack: Works on USB and one for FOV works on our LiPo. [2826.46] Jack: Dedicated current sensor pad, extra pin on the SC connector. [2831.82] Jack: Change pin out for FPV part. [2834.02] Jack: Way cleaner now. [2835.82] Jack: Barrow moved to the bottom side of FC. [2838.02] Jack: Protect from sun. [2839.62] Jack: Integrated spike absorber. [2841.7] Jack: New gyro. [2843.7] Jack: What did you mean by interesting gyro? [2846.3] Stephen: I just hadn't seen that model used before. [2850.86] Koel: 42 IIM-4265-2. [2854.98] Stephen: Yeah, they people have been moving to different gyro chips and they used some of it. [2860.94] Stephen: I think he means he's got IAM there, but he means ICM. [2864.58] Stephen: And it's a four to six eight. [2867.74] Stephen: Eight, I think, was the one that was the kind of budget offering. [2873.38] Koel: And no more no more empty six thousand. [2876.1] Stephen: Yeah, as Dom says, the four to six eight eight P is better and pin compatible. [2885.42] Stephen: So there's there's a lot of gyros that look basically the same, but the vendor intends them [2892.54] Stephen: different purposes. [2893.7] Stephen: They're slightly some are better noise immunity. [2896.94] Stephen: Some are more robust and so on and so forth. [2900.62] Jack: Oh, so he said I absolutely didn't like the ICM or LSM or Bosch gyros. [2910.34] Jack: I tried them all actually. [2914.82] Jack: He also says I use IIM-4265-2 works best for my needs. [2922.34] Jack: Um, Alex, we've got we've got menace on next week. [2929.94] Jack: But give us a nod when you release the V2 and we'll have you on to chat about them. [2938.18] Koel: Yeah, that'd be cool. [2939.22] Koel: We'd love to hear more about it. [2940.26] Stephen: Yeah, it looks like that one is the extended temperature range one from what I could see. [2946.18] Stephen: So the industrial connotation is that it has wider temperature. [2952.22] Jack: It's interesting to see two to two giants, you know, like, you know, clean flight and then kiss sort of talk in the chat. [2965.66] Curry: I feel like I can't join in because I don't know the gyro models at all except for that. [2970.74] Curry: I don't know these new ones either. [2973.22] Koel: Sixty six thousand thing that's all fancy fancy test batch and production. [2982.34] Jack: Yeah, it'd be good to know. [2985.42] Stephen: Yeah, yeah, they're a bit of a dark art gyro selection because they've got various sensitivities and the sensitivities changes. [2992.78] Stephen: They change when you change the sampling rates and things. [2995.46] Jack: It's in temperature. [2997.38] Stephen: Yeah, it's all up in the air. [2999.62] Stephen: Cool. [3000.1] Jack: So no, I had to he had to stop at some point. [3005.66] Jack: We had to stop so far. [3008.26] Jack: That's the gyro for him. [3010.46] Jack: So nice. [3013.22] Jack: Yeah, it can't it can't be easy because like getting parts, we're still, you know, we're still in a massive chip shortage. [3020.42] Jack: I mean, you know, like Raspberry Pi is going like for 90 pounds and stuff. [3026.66] Curry: Raspberry Pi. [3027.62] Curry: Yeah, you want one 2023, maybe. [3031.42] Koel: If you like your Jack, I'll make you a Raspberry Pi for that much money. [3035.74] Jack: Like I think the Raspberry Pi three. [3040.02] Jack: Nobody liked my joke, damn it. [3042.9] Jack: Yeah, I supported spinning. [3049.14] Curry: No, no, no, no, no, it was that bad. [3052.94] Jack: Yeah, it was in the corner quietly. [3056.5] Jack: Like when does the support run out for like the support for what? [3063.9] Jack: No, January 2026. [3067.1] Jack: Hang on for what? [3068.9] Jack: Raspberry Pi Model 3. [3072.46] Jack: There you go. [3073.9] Jack: 2026. [3075.86] Jack: Yeah, obsolescence. [3079.58] Jack: For the time they come in stock, they'll be obsolete. [3083.58] Curry: I want a zero, too. [3085.5] Curry: I don't want anything else. [3086.78] Curry: I can't I can't get the zeros. [3089.74] Stephen: It's a little wave share. [3091.62] Stephen: Doodles are pretty cute. [3093.14] Stephen: This this one's been working well for me. [3095.54] Stephen: It's my little ELRS USB-C adapter, so I could plug that into the PC [3100.1] Stephen: and then connect my radio to this and USB in. [3103.78] Stephen: That's quite fun. [3106.18] Curry: Why doesn't it help me? [3107.18] Curry: Does it help me get a Pi Zero Two, which don't exist [3110.86] Curry: unless you pay scat? [3111.78] Curry: This is like this, like buying the PS5 like a year ago. [3115.7] Curry: It's like, oh, yeah, some dodgy bloke on eBay has got one for a grand. [3118.5] Curry: Do you want that one? [3119.38] Curry: So I was saying that. [3121.22] Curry: No, it's zero to this. [3123.66] Stephen: You said I was zero to. [3125.58] Stephen: All right. Sorry, I'll put you as Pico for a second. [3128.38] Jack: Yeah, remain the zero to W will remain the production to at least January 2028. [3134.38] Curry: Well, that's probably the next time we'll get one. [3137.42] Stephen: He's still struggling to build open HD, then can't quite get the perfect rig together. [3143.26] Curry: I've got stuff to do from my last flight with it, [3147.58] Curry: some of which included going and getting some antennas made. [3152.18] Curry: Now, I found out from some other guys about [3156.34] Curry: the Wi-Fi adapters being very strong from like [3162.06] Curry: something like 5120 to 5360. [3165.38] Curry: And so you need to go down in that range to get decent power. [3168.3] Curry: And if you're going to do that, then you need a different antenna completely [3171.82] Curry: because you're so far out of the spec of the regular antennas. [3174.54] Curry: Like this, this will improve things. [3176.98] Curry: Right. OK. [3178.46] Curry: And we'll get it. Here's a Gerber file. [3180.42] Curry: Go and order it. Right. [3181.86] Curry: So I've done that. [3184.98] Curry: It's very straightforward, really. [3186.42] Curry: You just have to get some some antennas made by electronics firms and find. [3192.22] Stephen: So what's a new USB lead? [3193.74] Stephen: You're not going to have to solder those four dangerous leads [3196.78] Stephen: that might break everything, then. [3198.7] Curry: They said that do that as well. [3200.26] Curry: So give it a go. [3202.14] Curry: Oh, he said like the magnifier I'm talking to who has done some amazing flights [3206.94] Curry: and he's getting like perfect picture at like 30 kilometers. [3210.46] Curry: So I trust what he's saying is like, oh, I just used a Dremel to cut that away. [3214.66] Curry: And then I soldered those bits and it's dead easy. [3217.18] Curry: It's like, OK, then it's it's just annoying. [3221.02] Curry: The annoyance is that the price of those Wi-Fi adapters is very high. [3224.62] Curry: So you don't want to cough it up. [3226.1] Curry: That's 60 quid a pop, aren't they? [3228.66] Curry: I think I'm on for about 45. [3230.06] Curry: But I did. Jack's already made up some little [3233.66] Curry: balance lead cables for me because I did come with the intention of doing this [3237.22] Curry: and separating out, but still having a connector. [3240.46] Curry: But which is, you know, USB can shake around balance cables. [3244.42] Stephen: I did see someone mention a part on like Ali Express that was similar to that, [3249.58] Stephen: but with slightly lower power. [3252.98] Stephen: Do you think those as us ones, the AC 56 is the be all and all for that? [3258.7] Curry: That seems to be the very popular one that there are a bunch of ones [3261.18] Curry: that are quite similar on Ali Express, although some of them is like, oh, [3266.22] Curry: you need to add heat sinks to this because they run hot and do this and do that. [3271.18] Curry: So the the the ACES one was very much a little bit more plug and play than the other ones. [3277.26] Curry: There's an alpha one as well. [3279.74] Stephen: There was some alpha one that could run up to like 30 DBM [3283.38] Stephen: that people were saying was good. [3286.58] Curry: I've looked at those ones. [3288.34] Curry: I've got I've got my two adapters. [3290.42] Curry: That's OK if I can interchange them. [3292.98] Curry: And as soon as I get these antennas through, which weren't that expensive to make, actually, [3297.98] Curry: it's like I'm playing about. [3302.06] Curry: Something like about five or eight quid, I think, to get [3305.58] Curry: five of these antennas made and shipped to me, which isn't too bad. [3309.58] Stephen: But that was the difference between them and a regular TV antenna. [3313.82] Curry: Let me show you a picture of one. [3315.74] Curry: Where have I got a picture? [3317.3] Stephen: I'm intrigued because we've had a barrage of antenna designs that came with first [3323.18] Stephen: refined analog kind of with indestructible antennas for freestyle [3327.62] Stephen: and then DJI antennas and walk snail antennas and HD zero. [3333.82] Stephen: People seem to have settled on a kind of fairly robust design for Omni's at this point. [3338.54] Curry: Yeah, and that's what I was thinking. [3339.82] Curry: I was thinking these antennas are going to work fine [3341.98] Curry: because they work fine in FPV and we're doing the same stuff, but [3347.22] Curry: allegedly different stuff for different types of [3354.34] Curry: traffic or signal and and gubbins like that. [3358.02] Curry: Can I find it? Hang on. [3359.86] Curry: Let me go on to my discord here. [3366.63] Stephen: Photographic evidence, photographic evidence of antennas. [3371.67] Curry: Oh, there you go. [3372.91] Curry: I found out some guy who was actually making up and selling them. [3377.75] Curry: But I didn't get them from him. [3379.47] Curry: They are called the Maple Leaf antenna and they look like [3383.83] Curry: share. Share screen. [3389.64] Curry: Chrome tab, Maple Leaf antenna. [3393.4] Curry: Like that. What? [3398.04] Stephen: Hang on. Loading. [3399.48] Stephen: Loading. That is a funky looking antenna. [3403.16] Koel: Yeah, so the Maple Leafs. [3405.72] Stephen: That is nice. Very Canadian, isn't it? [3407.6] Stephen: You had to go. [3408.64] Stephen: What's what's the actual PCB pattern that's going underneath? [3411.76] Stephen: What appears to be a diagram of a broadsword? [3418.12] Curry: I don't know. That's that's a nice loli stick. [3423.24] Curry: Yeah, very different. [3425.4] Curry: But they are a notedly. [3429.72] Curry: Yeah, I have to. [3431.88] Curry: I've had to order like a bunch of right angled SMA [3436.12] Curry: or actually RPSMA connectors because of the way the the Aces [3439.8] Curry: thingy has its connection. [3441.0] Curry: All right. And we are on Tendi, our founder. [3444.72] Jack: Oh, yeah, everyone. [3446.4] Stephen: 3 dBm omni, vertical polarized. [3451.68] Curry: Yeah, but the point of this is it's [3455.44] Curry: its frequency is 5.2 to 5.3, which is what we're after. [3459.6] Stephen: So you said you had to change your frequency off 5.2 or 5.3. [3463.4] Curry: Yes, I'm coming to that problem as to face it. [3466.96] Curry: I had a specific problem on 5230, [3470.64] Curry: but I haven't tried some of the other ones. [3473.6] Stephen: So I'm just surprised that the actual signal strength is a problem [3477.04] Stephen: when you're flying like under 100 meters from yourself in an open field. [3481.04] Curry: It is weird. It's like I can only guess that remember when back in the day, [3485.08] Curry: the the early analog VTXs is it'll be like, oh, it's a 200 milliwatt one [3491.8] Curry: and one channels 200 milliwatts, another is like four milliwatts [3495.48] Curry: and another is like 400 milliwatts because they're so badly made [3499.88] Curry: for that sort of thing. [3500.92] Curry: So I don't know if this is the problem with this. [3502.56] Curry: Someone's done the testing and said the power output for this antenna is here. [3507.2] Curry: This is where you need to be. [3508.2] Curry: If you put it into what I was using, it's it's poo. [3511.76] Curry: And so are your antennas. [3513.16] Curry: And you're going to die if you don't solder these on properly. [3515.64] Curry: So I will do that. [3519.16] Stephen: So you found someone who's got some advice, [3521.12] Stephen: but they're exceedingly prescriptive. [3522.84] Stephen: And so you're following the exceedingly prescriptive route to. [3526.96] Curry: Well, this is a simple change, at least getting the antennas is easy. [3531.16] Curry: Putting the antennas on is easy. [3532.48] Curry: Whether my ground station will run happily [3536.36] Curry: on this frequency is another question. [3539.24] Curry: But we'll be talking to developers [3542.36] Curry: about why that's going wrong there. [3547.72] Stephen: Reminds me a little bit of trying to have a drink with a former colleague of mine. [3551.96] Stephen: And if you go into a bar that had any decent gin selection, [3555.84] Stephen: they'd ask you if you wanted a martini and then proceed to give the barman [3560.4] Stephen: an embarrassing 15 minute lecture on how to make the perfect martini [3564.92] Stephen: and would refuse to drink it unless he followed the instructions perfectly. [3569.12] Stephen: The point where you just felt quite sorry for the bartender, [3572.0] Stephen: by the time you got your drink and a little bit like it was starting to go home [3576.0] Stephen: before you'd sipped it. [3578.12] Jack: And there are some tips on cheap, but good long range antennas. [3583.92] Jack: Menace RC, that is [3587.28] Jack: definitely put your questions into the discord for next week. [3591.84] Jack: So, yeah, if you need any RC, Menace sort of antenna. [3596.28] Stephen: Well, Canadian connections vanished, but the [3599.48] Stephen: the true RC ones are pretty good. [3604.12] Stephen: They do one that's particularly funky. [3606.28] Stephen: That's a carbon tube, which I've got somewhere. [3609.64] Curry: I use the Menace on my goggles. [3611.04] Curry: I got a periscope and the mini. [3613.56] Curry: What's the mini one starts with, doesn't it? [3615.84] Curry: Pico. Mini. [3616.72] Curry: Mini Pico. There you go. [3618.56] Curry: Although on on my quads, I do like the Russia PV cherry antennas. [3622.88] Curry: I find those are really good. [3627.14] Stephen: This this guy with the tube and wait. [3631.18] Koel: There you are. [3633.42] Koel: So the matchstick, is it a little little match? [3636.78] Stephen: I think that's the matchstick. [3637.9] Stephen: Yeah, it's the matchstick with a tube and there's also a matchstick with an SMA. [3643.06] Stephen: And that's meant to be really tough because instead of a plastic tube, [3647.06] Stephen: they've got [3649.5] Stephen: actually, no, that's that's not the carbon fiber one. [3651.7] Stephen: That's just the tube, but they do one with like a carbon fiber element here. [3655.46] Stephen: This is the flexi one because I didn't want it to be a light quad. [3658.66] Stephen: But I've got one with where this is solid carbon fiber, and that's an absolute bruiser. [3664.66] Curry: Back in the day, my longest flight was done with this. [3668.46] Curry: At the time, I had my original dominators, so he only had one antenna. [3674.1] Curry: And what you had to do as it got further away is be really accurate with your head. [3679.1] Curry: And like you're acting like basically a tracker doing this and getting it perfect. [3683.98] Curry: And it always makes me laugh because I got very used to putting my head in the right [3687.42] Curry: location because I see people all the time flying. [3690.94] Curry: They've got their heads down and they've got their patch into the ground all the time [3695.54] Curry: wasting it instead of looking in the right direction. [3699.22] Jack: Get get actually get out the ground effect. [3703.5] Koel: Yeah, last time I flew, I actually didn't realize my patch was I guess it like had [3706.94] Koel: loosened up and it was facing the ground and I was like, oh, well, that's why I wasn't [3711.06] Koel: getting the greatest video right in front of me. [3713.14] Jack: Yeah. [3713.66] Jack: It happens. [3716.94] Jack: But, yeah, AudioGeek, definitely tune in next week and hopefully you'll have Menace on [3722.82] Jack: and you can pick his brain. [3724.18] Stephen: AudioGeek, do you fly analog or digital? [3727.34] Stephen: What is your requirement? [3733.71] Stephen: I mean, for the most part, I just stick a couple of omnis on the goggles these days. [3738.39] Stephen: Analog. [3739.63] Stephen: Yeah. [3740.63] Jack: Yeah, I get on better with the Evader patch than the Pico because this is a bit wider. [3747.55] Jack: I'm not so disciplined on the point in your head the right way. [3754.31] Curry: I have to say, the most long reason I used to Pico is because it fits in my Google case [3761.23] Curry: along with everything else. [3763.31] Curry: But, yeah, I'm pretty good at putting my head in the right place, even to the point that [3767.51] Curry: I will, if I know I've flown over there, I will rotate a bit just to make sure I've got [3772.91] Curry: the best picture. [3775.03] Koel: It always feels so weird though when you're flying or standing up, you're trying to like, [3778.39] Koel: okay, I got to turn, but I have to use my legs while I'm still flying. [3782.63] Koel: And it feels so strange, I find, trying to, like, turn to yourself and like turn until [3791.31] Stephen: you see yourself facing the right direction and then like set off in that direction. [3795.39] Stephen: I sometimes do that. [3797.59] Koel: I usually set up so that where I'm flying out, I'm already facing. [3801.95] Koel: But I don't know, it's it always it's always a little different, but I like fly in front of [3806.71] Stephen: myself and be like, is my head actually lifted up and I'll just try and like freeze in that [3811.03] Stephen: position and fly out. [3812.71] Jack: Yeah, yeah. [3815.11] Jack: Interesting to see what batteries are in and out of stock. [3820.71] Jack: Interesting. [3824.39] Jack: Do you go to 5S? [3827.59] Jack: Who knows? [3829.11] Stephen: So my solution for not tipping my head forward is to have one on me that way and I figured like [3835.03] Stephen: I'm covered, right? [3835.95] Stephen: I could just say, that's all right. [3837.59] Stephen: Oh, good. [3838.67] Curry: That's a work around, a work around for like insufficient holding up. [3845.51] Curry: It's not really what it should be. [3849.35] Koel: 5S batteries or? [3851.87] Koel: 6S jack. [3853.55] Stephen: The year is 2022, it's 6S. [3856.11] Stephen: That's the correct battery to buy. [3857.55] Jack: 4S. [3858.19] Stephen: I can't do. [3858.99] Jack: 7S. [3860.83] Jack: 8S. [3862.71] Jack: 0.5S. [3865.23] Curry: Mind you, I must use prime numbers for batteries in terms of cell counts of fun. [3870.95] Curry: Steven, you must have used a 7S quad. [3872.87] Curry: You're strange. [3874.27] Stephen: That's one where I have like five and a half inch quads and. [3877.43] Stephen: Almost everywhere else I'm building a 10S. [3879.91] Stephen: I've got an 8S, but no, no sevens. [3882.91] Stephen: Fives, yes. [3883.95] Stephen: Six is no sevens. [3886.43] Koel: No one 8S builds in there, Steven. [3890.15] Koel: One 8S. [3890.55] Stephen: Yeah, I've got an 8S. [3891.71] Stephen: That's why I've got the cine lifter motors on 1250 KV. [3895.59] Stephen: I figure with a bit of extra state of volume, they'll be able to take the power [3899.35] Stephen: without pooping out and be cinematic, of course. [3903.75] Stephen: Yeah, right. [3905.07] Stephen: Hollywood. [3905.71] Stephen: We'll see. [3908.35] Jack: That's it. [3909.11] Jack: Well, that is all we have got time for. [3912.63] Jack: This show is sponsored by our lovely Patreons. [3916.87] Jack: Without them, we would not be impartial. [3920.15] Jack: Thank you so much. [3921.75] Jack: Oh, God, we love you guys. [3923.95] Jack: Thank you for everyone who tuned in. [3926.31] Jack: We are live every Thursday at 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. UK time. [3930.71] Jack: You don't know what that is. [3931.87] Jack: Type into Google and it will tell you. [3934.83] Jack: And don't forget to click the bell icon and the like button. [3940.75] Jack: And you have been joined by everyone. [3943.23] Jack: So you're Kerry Kitten. [3945.11] Jack: Goodbye. [3946.15] Jack: The man with the mustache. [3948.35] Stephen: Thank you. [3948.95] Jack: Good night, Steven. [3951.47] Jack: The man who had to amend the thumbnail and everything. [3958.39] Jack: And I like what you did. [3959.35] Jack: I think you just created a new one and edited the date of the old one. [3962.91] Jack: It's a hero. [3963.47] Koel: No, no, no, I did something else. [3966.03] Koel: What I did was I made a new one for this one. [3968.23] Koel: And then I remade the next one. [3970.23] Jack: So, oh, yeah, see, like he's he's getting good now. [3975.67] Jack: You don't even know. [3977.51] Jack: Don't even notice the changes. [3979.39] Jack: And, yeah, don't forget, Menace has is released his Kickstarter for the [3987.43] Jack: sort of line. [3988.55] Jack: So sold a go. [3990.83] Jack: So, yeah, if you want one, pledge that and we'll see you next week. [3995.91] Jack: Send us your antenna questions and we'll see you then. [3999.43] Jack: Thank you. [3999.91] Jack: Good night. [4001.11] Koel: Good night. [4001.95] Koel: See you guys. [4003.31] UNKNOWN: Bye telemetry loss.
