[94.22] Stephen: Who had done this wonderful fix for DJI FPV and it worked him with the MSP OSD and it added proper modern fonts
[102.02] Stephen: It wasn't in fact some dude and he called me out. So apologies. I I didn't want to call him

[116.1] Stephen: Must be difficult for you, but I'm guessing it's not anyway Nifer. It's it's absolutely amazing and I'd like to quickly

[214.98] Stephen: There was an update on open HD talking about the project status making note of the real complex situation
[222.1] Stephen: They've been through where someone promised a whole load of features and then abruptly left the project and they rather

[231.3] Stephen: Over promise and under deliver as over promise and then f off and leave everyone
[236.98] Curry: So the project's been and delete the binaries accidentally
[240.34] Stephen: Yeah, pulling everything together over last year and it looks like they're they're at the point now where they're going to actually
[246.82] Stephen: Get into their stride and start making releases and there's kind of this apologetic post about all that. So
[253.46] Stephen: Really hope that they they get everything sorted out and can pull it together. It looks very promising
[259.38] Stephen: but logistically they've had a heck of a time so
[263.38] Stephen: Fingers crossed on that one
[265.06] Stephen: Another bunch that has also been doing great in the last year
[270.1] Stephen: Edge TX are finally doing their flying dutchman 2.8 release. It was a couple of days late for the rc
[276.66] Stephen: This is the one that overhauls all the graphical side if you've got a color radio
[280.9] Stephen: So instead of it looking like a bunch of kind of grid boxes
[284.9] Stephen: It looks more like a modern smartphone with nice rounded boxes and better use of color and the ui reorganized for touch
[292.58] Stephen: It's not great if you don't have a color radio, but there are some bug fixes and minor improvements going in there as well
[298.42] Stephen: um, they're up to rc2 on htx 2.8 and with this release you get a full online updater
[305.14] Stephen: So there's a buddy website
[307.14] Stephen: You can go to in chrome which functions much like all the other chrome usb doodads like esc configurator
[315.06] Stephen: And it allows you to upgrade your radio using a browser
[318.02] Stephen: So you don't have to install companion. You can just plug it into a browser and off you go
[322.74] Stephen: It also supports a number of audio packs
[325.94] Stephen: And i'm pleased to say that they they've also got the uk audio packs that yours truly put in a while ago
[333.14] Stephen: They need to sort out some of the labeling on those you need to basically rename them from
[337.6] Stephen: engb ryan and the engb libby just to en because the radio only
[343.14] Stephen: Recognizes en language. It doesn't recognize engb and things like that
[348.34] Stephen: But that's pretty good and I will try and rectify that in the future

[427.46] Frank: The the majority of the the the events that actually went on this year. It seems like that
[433.62] Frank: So many that you've done this year slightly felt like it but I didn't do more

[441.22] Frank: And then as well as that you've also been doing all the the wing racing events
[446.66] Frank: I think or at least the vast majority of the x-class events you've been doing the

[454.74] Frank: And you've got this fancy new
[459.06] Frank: Project race trailer on the go. So you've got a lot of stuff to talk about

[471.7] Cerb: It's almost the case with me there are way more projects than I have time for and I spread myself too thinly

[480.42] Cerb: My brain just goes too quickly for me to sit around too much. So yeah, it's been um, it's been a hell of a year

[488.9] Cerb: Um, i'm actually now no longer a committee member of the british drone racing association. My tenure

[497.62] Cerb: Saturday at the agm
[499.38] Cerb: Uh, I did my my 12 months as technical and safety director of the bdra which was fantastic fun
[505.86] Cerb: Uh got to see a lot of stuff from the inside, you know
[508.66] Cerb: How hard the committee works and and all the challenges to
[512.42] Cerb: Nailing jelly to the ceiling which is
[515.3] Cerb: Um, you know trying to organize drone races and it doesn't matter what you do
[519.94] Cerb: Someone's going to be upset with you. So it's a lot of difficult decisions hell of a year
[524.42] Cerb: Um i've raced a lot more this year as well

[529.86] Cerb: Which way you placed in the championships, right?
[533.06] Cerb: Yeah, so I I had a terrible weekend
[537.7] Cerb: Um, so the the championships, uh, yeah was last weekend. Um, so all of these reprobates

[547.38] Cerb: Uh home of the bmfa. Yeah, really good weekend, uh for everybody. Um and really good fun
[553.3] Cerb: But I had a I had a nightmare of a time. Um, I had a load of equipment failures. I had
[557.62] Cerb: Quads that just didn't want to play. Uh, I struggled with the wind. It was quite windy on saturday
[562.66] Cerb: Um, which I find quite difficult for some reason
[565.78] Cerb: Uh, I managed to qualify into the final
[569.86] Cerb: That I should have probably been in but I by the skin of my teeth. I was in that six
[575.14] Cerb: um, and then having gotten myself into there I was in a good position because I was
[580.18] Cerb: Pretty well matched with those guys in my final and I stood a chance of taking the final and
[585.38] Cerb: You get three runs in the final and two of the runs my my vtx expired
[590.18] Cerb: Um, so I finished last in my final, but i'm still 54th in the uk. So there you go
[595.54] Cerb: That's that's a good claim to fame. Yeah, you can claim that one, right? And I think i'm
[599.62] Cerb: Uh, i'm in the veterans league because i'm old and have gray hair. I think i'm like
[605.22] Cerb: 12th veteran or something in the uk. What's the cutoff for veterans at the moment 45 years of age
[612.9] Frank: There we go, I mean I think in the bmfa generally that's like juniors, right
[619.85] Cerb: in the bmfa
[621.85] Cerb: I don't know. I'm not sure there. There isn't
[625.53] Cerb: There's a little seam of youngsters there
[627.93] Cerb: Um, and also they are the bmfa are really open at the moment to this drone thing with you know
[632.33] Cerb: They've set up this separate sort of not separate but a categorized drone membership
[637.69] Cerb: um, and they want to encourage
[640.25] Cerb: Doing it properly because I think those that run the bmfa realize that actually they do need to appeal to the younger flyer
[647.85] Cerb: Um how you do that and and excite the the balsa wood boys. I'm not sure but let's
[654.01] Frank: I did get some feedback from some
[657.13] Frank: I know someone who was there at backminster at the weekend not for the drone racing
[662.41] Frank: but for the uh model builders event that was going on in the hangar and
[667.61] Frank: I I do hear that there wasn't enough
[670.97] Frank: cross pollination between the two groups apparently there's not a lot of uh
[676.17] Frank: drone racers going and buying enough balsa, I have that as some feedback so
[680.89] Frank: You know, we have to come up with something some kind of balsa and tissue paper
[685.93] Frank: like drone
[688.01] Frank: Made out of carbon fiber. Yeah
[690.41] Cerb: We don't really leave the race trap because we we kind of arrived we set up and then we're bang bang bang
[696.25] Cerb: Qualifying heats all day and then finals and then pack up and go so we're busy
[701.45] Cerb: every hour of both days
[703.69] Cerb: But I can say that we did have quite a lot of the so there was a lot going on at backminster this weekend
[709.37] Cerb: there was us and two other big events, uh, and people were coming over and um, you know
[715.29] Cerb: asking us about the quads and we were giving a spare pair of goggles to people and
[721.13] Cerb: We had a screen set up in the killer quads mini marquee
[725.05] Cerb: Um, so all the killer quads team guys there
[727.93] Cerb: so people were coming in and watching the racing and and everybody that actually
[731.85] Cerb: Made the effort to come over and watch it was like oh
[734.97] Cerb: Wow, didn't realize this was what it was like. This is amazing, you know
[739.45] Cerb: especially when you've got that like the really quick boys going so um
[743.37] Cerb: so the the winners
[744.97] Cerb: Uh, so our uk champion, uh is soul soul fpv
[749.45] Cerb: Uh took the win at the weekend second place night hawk third place was ak
[755.05] Cerb: Uh, and the highest placed veteran was kpv
[759.93] Cerb: So they're they're all your winners, uh for this year for 22
[764.57] Cerb: Um, hopefully we'll see them all back
[767.13] Stephen: Time split between the winners and the kind of median people middle of the pack huge
[775.85] Cerb: So, I mean soul is just a machine he is an absolute machine he's an amazing talent
[781.45] Cerb: um, and the gap between him and second place I think was
[785.85] Cerb: Seven minutes or something at one point

[790.73] Cerb: Well, let's spread over the the 10 qualifying rounds. Oh, right. Okay
[795.13] Frank: How do the rounds work then because?
[797.37] Frank: The the format always seems fairly nebulous. So what's how does it work at the moment? Okay, so
[804.33] Cerb: Uh, you go out in your qualifying rounds you have two minutes
[809.29] Cerb: Uh to get as many laps as you can within the lap cap
[814.09] Cerb: Once that two minutes expires, you've got 30 seconds to finish the lap that you're on
[818.89] Cerb: So the lap cap was four laps
[822.49] Cerb: So soul was knocking in four laps in I think his quickest was
[827.83] Cerb: 115
[829.21] Cerb: I think don't quote me on that. I haven't got all the numbers in front of me
[832.65] Cerb: He was trying he was threatening to do a 110. He kept saying he was going to do four in 110
[837.69] Cerb: I I my quickest was three in
[841.51] Cerb: 158
[843.05] Cerb: Which meant that I then had 30 seconds to finish it
[846.97] Cerb: But I actually did the four in two minutes 32
[851.45] Cerb: So it's two seconds away from doing four laps. That's because i'm i'm old and i'm slow
[856.33] Cerb: so so the guys down in
[858.81] Cerb: Uh the 10th final because there's 60 pilots at the championships. We break them into groups of six pilots
[866.01] Cerb: So you've got a final all the way down to
[869.45] Cerb: J final I think

[872.57] Cerb: So the guys down in the bottom, uh, we weren't really managing four laps
[877.53] Cerb: But there are no
[878.89] Cerb: Two years ago you would go to the championships and then the bottom final you'd have guys that couldn't do a lap
[884.01] Cerb: Uh, the quality now is so much higher. There are no slow pilots anymore
[889.29] Cerb: You know everybody can bang laps in
[892.17] Cerb: We can't catch soul, but we can bang laps
[896.65] Frank: And uh
[898.01] Frank: Uh, we'll we'll have to find out about us all and see if we can get him on at some point
[903.21] Frank: Yeah, you definitely should

[907.21] Frank: There was there was also talk of some interclub rivalry being sort of
[913.53] Frank: Fanned at the uh at the event. How was that? How was that working? So I thought this was really good. So this wasn't um
[920.49] Cerb: It wasn't really kicked off by the bdra. It was kicked off by the local groups
[924.73] Cerb: Which is that's really good to see that that kind of enthusiasm is there. So the the guys from hull
[930.81] Cerb: Uh were trash talking the guys from wales who are trash talking the guys from bristol
[936.41] Cerb: Um, so I think it was the guys from hull that put together this idea that we would have or they would have like a little
[943.91] Cerb: rivalry between the separate groups
[946.33] Cerb: um, so nominate, you know, these are the whole pilots these are the
[950.09] Cerb: uh
[950.97] Cerb: Um sgdc pilots. These are the the team woolly shoot pilots
[956.09] Cerb: Uh, and then they figured out who finished where and they they put it themselves head to head, you know
[961.61] Cerb: Sorted it all out on social media and and had this whole thing going on for weeks before the championships
[967.85] Cerb: Which it was really excellent. It was great to see
[970.81] Cerb: um, and you never know that might be something that the the bdra take up and and do a bit more of
[976.73] Cerb: Um, but it definitely shows that you know, the spirit is there the racing spirit
[980.81] Cerb: The camaraderie and the trash talking is
[984.17] Cerb: It's all going on
[985.77] Frank: It's it's all survived the
[988.49] Frank: sort of a few tough years of
[991.21] Frank: making it, you know difficult
[993.45] Frank: uh
[995.29] Cerb: Yeah has been really hard. Yeah events. Um in the second half of the season struggled to fill up
[1001.29] Cerb: Uh, whereas pre-covid
[1003.85] Cerb: You would fill an event up in the first five minutes of it going live
[1007.61] Cerb: Um, there are a couple of events this year that that didn't take place because they didn't meet their quotas
[1012.89] Cerb: Uh, so it has been really hard and the cost of living crisis is is really hurting us. All right
[1018.49] Cerb: You know that from from races to freestylers to to wing pilots
[1023.21] Cerb: You know flight controllers at twice the price they used to be
[1026.57] Cerb: um
[1027.37] Cerb: so it's difficult to justify the you know the the weekend away the petrol to get there the
[1032.97] Cerb: The amount of stuff you're going to break while you're there
[1037.29] Cerb: So
[1038.57] Frank: Yeah, still still a fact of flying is that you're going to grab something right? Yeah
[1044.01] Cerb: But it's still a healthy sport, you know, even with all those challenges
[1047.21] Cerb: Um, they're still you know, there were 60 pilots there all competing
[1051.69] Cerb: um
[1052.65] Cerb: For for a whole weekend and it i'm confident next year will be even busier
[1056.73] Cerb: Well, I know i'm going to be busier because i'm going to be doing laser stuff. So
[1061.05] Frank: Um for anyone who doesn't know
[1063.05] Frank: How do you get into the bdra championship event? Like how do you get the invitation?
[1069.45] Cerb: Yeah, so you have to be a member of the bdra for starters
[1073.05] Cerb: So you you can find the bdra at bdra.uk. That's the website
[1077.45] Cerb: Uh, then you can sign up. It's 10 pounds for a year
[1082.73] Cerb: I mean that's dirt cheap before you even start 10 pounds over 12 months is really really cheap
[1087.13] Cerb: It will ping you off to ifpv
[1089.61] Cerb: Which is a website operated by druid
[1092.97] Cerb: And ifpv is kind of like ticket master for the fpv community
[1098.33] Cerb: It's not operated and run by the bdra. It's held separately. So that means that you you know that
[1105.61] Cerb: There's no controlling interest from the bdra. Let's put it that way
[1110.09] Cerb: And once you've signed up
[1111.93] Cerb: You start going to british qualifiers, so they'll be advertised on ifpv
[1116.49] Cerb: You sign up to them you go along
[1118.81] Cerb: Last year you only needed to go to one event
[1123.13] Cerb: To qualify but you would have had to score very highly at that one event
[1127.61] Cerb: To then get enough points to be in the top 60 in the uk
[1132.17] Cerb: We then invite the top 60 to the championship event
[1136.65] Cerb: with the caveat that
[1138.81] Cerb: Anyone that can't make it their space will be offered to the next 10 pilots
[1143.85] Cerb: So if you qualify 61 to 70 you're in with a chance
[1148.41] Cerb: But only if someone from the top 60 drops out
[1151.37] Cerb: so you have to be a member to qualify and
[1154.73] Cerb: That's 10 pounds a year if you're going to a bqe
[1158.49] Cerb: You will get a couple of quid off your entrance fee when you sign up
[1162.81] Cerb: So by the time you've been to three or four events, you've had your 10 quid back in discounts
[1167.93] Cerb: Um, so yeah, it's not expensive from that aspect. It's only expensive when you crash into things and stuff catches fire
[1177.53] Frank: And uh, well some of the events that you've done
[1180.81] Frank: Uh this year i've obviously had the x-class ones. I feel like those are the most expensive crashes at the moment, right?
[1187.85] Cerb: Yeah, absolutely
[1189.13] Cerb: So i've been doing a lot of stuff with um stubsy and the wing boys, uh and fossils stuff
[1196.25] Cerb: And the x-class racers
[1198.25] Cerb: Um, so that's outside of the bdra. They don't look after that. That's a separate
[1203.59] Cerb: Entity that's just starting up. That's just finding its feet
[1207.77] Cerb: And operate separately and i i've been really lucky I got invited
[1211.53] Cerb: Uh to race direct the first
[1214.97] Cerb: Uh wing race which was at popum
[1217.53] Cerb: We've done three now
[1219.05] Cerb: Uh, so yeah, that's been great fun. It's if you think trying to herd
[1225.21] Cerb: Five inch racers on a on a race day is difficult
[1227.93] Cerb: Try it with the wing guys because they're brand new and they've got no idea what's going on
[1230.97] Cerb: It's brilliant, but we're getting them up to speed. We've done three races now. We did, uh wings and wheels this year
[1237.93] Cerb: uh, which
[1239.93] Cerb: You some of you guys were at
[1242.01] Cerb: Uh, and the we ran the x-class races there and we've just done, uh wings over the valley
[1248.09] Cerb: Uh, which was up
[1250.65] Cerb: three guesses in wales
[1252.65] Cerb: Uh, don't ask me to pronounce the name of the place that it was
[1256.81] Cerb: But it was the top of a mountain and there were sheep under valley. So it must have been wales, right?
[1261.77] Curry: Could have been anywhere in wales though. Couldn't it really could have been yeah, and it was great
[1266.65] Cerb: Yeah
[1268.65] Cerb: It was our first opportunity to do a wing track that spread over three fields
[1273.53] Cerb: So so we really let the wings stretch their legs and get them out and doing really amazing laps
[1280.01] Cerb: uh, and I was there with um
[1283.69] Cerb: My my whole crazy setup. So at wings and wheels
[1287.69] Cerb: Um, we we had this
[1290.41] Cerb: Um, which is the gazebos of doom
[1295.05] Cerb: And you see there's a lot of wires and bits and bobs and stuff to deal with
[1300.57] Frank: Yeah, you've got you've got a couple of
[1303.13] Frank: gazebos just absolutely
[1305.85] Frank: netted with
[1307.45] Frank: various bits of
[1309.29] Frank: wire trailing around to your
[1312.25] Frank: What looks like some folding tables with a computer on it. Yeah
[1317.29] Cerb: So so that's what i've been i've been running as my rd set up my race director set up this year
[1324.25] Cerb: Um, and you know lugging all that up the side of a welsh mountain and getting that all set up was was great fun

[1333.05] Cerb: But that's going to change for next year and we're going to do a lot more of the x-class racing
[1338.33] Cerb: Uh, we're going to do a lot more wing racing
[1341.45] Cerb: um, and I what i've done is i've moved away from
[1346.49] Cerb: Uh being on the committee of the bdra
[1348.81] Cerb: which um
[1350.89] Cerb: Is great fun, but uses up a lot of time. What I actually want to do is concentrate on
[1355.77] Cerb: The stuff that i'm really enjoying which is race directing and racing, right? So, um
[1360.81] Cerb: i've uh
[1362.65] Cerb: I've now created fpv racing solutions, which is just a little name for me to operate under and and do my thing
[1370.65] Cerb: um
[1371.45] Cerb: So next year i'll i'll be
[1373.45] Cerb: Yeah, i'll be fpv racing solutions and i'll be running
[1376.65] Cerb: I've got five races for the killer quads, which is my my little community that I set up which

[1446.34] Cerb: So we we head over to uh, bronze grove from club every friday after work we head out there and I I do take
[1453.54] Cerb: the lap timer with us, uh and the
[1456.58] Cerb: Part of the setup so I actually have a flight case which has a laptop built into it
[1461.62] Cerb: With the screen and the lid so you just open it up and the the wi-fi is built in and the amp for fire for the speakers
[1467.3] Cerb: It's all in one case. It's a race in a box
[1469.86] Cerb: Um, and we throw the the lap timer out
[1472.1] Cerb: So we've we've run a little mini series over our practice sessions, uh every friday
[1477.62] Cerb: Um when the clocks change we'll have to stop because we'll run out of daylight too quickly
[1482.58] Cerb: Um, and and then we'll crown a sort of uh king of practice at the end of the season
[1488.18] Cerb: Um, so so next year we're going to do it as a proper local league
[1491.78] Cerb: Um with five full race events. Um, a couple of them might be british qualifying events

[1606.66] Cerb: Gigantic big thing and I brought it fairly cheap because the brakes needed an overhaul
[1613.38] Cerb: So I left it with a chap I brought it from um for him to do the brakes and he didn't get time to do them before

[1622.9] Cerb: the the pandemic hit us
[1625.62] Cerb: um, and then I couldn't get over there to work on it because I was um,
[1629.86] Cerb: Uh extremely vulnerable. So I was isolated
[1632.9] Cerb: Uh, so that's me inside the trailer on the day that I agreed to buy it and i'm smiling at the wife because I know she's
[1638.82] Cerb: Gonna kill me

[1643.78] Cerb: So it kind of sat there and languished all the way through the through the pandemic so I only actually finally got it here
[1651.46] Cerb: Um two or three months ago, uh, and the guy that was going to do the brakes
[1656.9] Cerb: Couldn't do the brakes. Uh, he just he was totally stuck with it. So the the brakes look like that
[1663.46] Frank: Oh, wow. So yeah that but I mean I can see that there was
[1668.5] Frank: There was some bearing there at some point, but it doesn't look in great shape then
[1673.46] Curry: Yeah, so not sure what brakes are supposed to look like but that does look a bit rusty and stuff

[1768.18] Cerb: I i've restored cars like I was i've restored a triumph spitfire. I've restored restored an mx5

[1776.34] Cerb: I have no idea when it comes to trailers none whatsoever
[1778.74] Cerb: So trying to find the parts and figure stuff out was has been really hard work and it should have been a quick

[1788.1] Cerb: You know get it going but it's going to be all this winter. I think to fit it out

[2190.67] Cerb: Yes, yeah, we got we get the field cameras out there. Um, we we use ndi
[2196.03] Cerb: Cameras, um, so you can install ndi on an old iphone
[2199.55] Cerb: Um, which is really handy so you can scatter old iphones around the field, um and do that and also, uh,

[2207.79] Cerb: Wings and wheels and wings over the valley
[2210.03] Cerb: Uh, I managed to get the ndi camera working wirelessly on one of them
[2213.79] Cerb: So I did actually go and romp around for a bit with the with the iphone and go here's the start gate
[2218.19] Cerb: And this felt like a bit of a wallie, but people seem to like that
[2222.59] Stephen: Getting a bit between them because you must have to cut every

[2227.79] Stephen: To get things in frame
[2229.79] Cerb: Yeah, it's you can't really do the race from the from the field cameras. You want to go to the on board?
[2235.87] Cerb: Um and watch it from on board and then if there's a good chase going on

[2241.47] Cerb: Uh i'm chasing druid or seems to happen at practice. You could go full screen to my feed
[2246.51] Cerb: And now we've got hd0. You can actually see the quad in front
[2250.03] Cerb: um, so that's good you can as as um
[2253.47] Cerb: Kind of race director producer director all at the same time
[2256.99] Cerb: If you can spot those little battles going on and and and switch your obs
[2261.87] Cerb: Your your screens between them, uh, you can capture some some good stuff
[2266.67] Cerb: But on the static cameras what I tend to do is i'll put one behind the takeoff blocks
[2272.35] Cerb: So when you go you hear the beeps and everybody starts you get a nice visual of all the quads
[2277.87] Cerb: Leaving the blocks and then we'll go on board with them
[2280.75] Cerb: Um, and if you've got a if you've got a feature such as a corkscrew or some arrangement of gates
[2286.59] Cerb: It's kind of slowing them down a bit
[2288.67] Cerb: But they're they're they're doing the corkscrew through three gates for for a like half a millisecond
[2294.11] Cerb: You can put a static camera there and you can switch to that sometimes
[2297.63] Cerb: But yeah, it's a real challenge with drone racing to
[2300.51] Cerb: To put a field camera out there and really capture it with the wings not so bad with the x-class not so bad
[2306.03] Cerb: because they're gigantic
[2308.67] Stephen: Yeah, small stuff without predictable flight patterns going really fast
[2313.39] Stephen: It's a challenge

[2317.71] Curry: Going putting the camera under the one gate worked pretty well with the wings
[2322.51] Curry: Although you had to almost take my camera out and does several times, but that was part of the assignment

[2335.55] Frank: Um, and yeah, I mean, this is something we didn't really touch when I was thinking about we should touch on

[2345.79] Frank: Uh has digital sort of come into the racing scene now because I mean when we we went to a freestyle event
[2352.75] Frank: quite a few of us, uh
[2354.91] Frank: month or two ago now
[2356.59] Frank: And dji had completely taken over the freestyle side of things. So what about the racing?
[2363.07] Frank: What's the what's the situation with the racing at the moment? How much is analog how much is hc zero?
[2369.23] Frank: Is is dji making any
[2372.11] Cerb: Headway into racing at all. No, so when it comes to racing there is there is no dji
[2378.11] Cerb: Because they won't work with us and we can't work with them
[2381.79] Cerb: Because the goggles transmit which causes all sorts of issues. They they range their power
[2387.45] Cerb: dynamically
[2388.43] Cerb: so trying to
[2390.19] Cerb: Do a so the lap timer works by judging video strength
[2394.27] Cerb: When you go through the start finish gate, that's the highest
[2397.55] Cerb: Video signal the thing in the gate is going to say with dji auto ranges
[2401.79] Cerb: You just can't it's just you can manage to just about time a couple of dji's in the air at once
[2408.51] Cerb: but
[2409.31] Cerb: Um, it would be a whole lot of the start finish gate the furthest away from the pilots. Yeah. Yeah, it's a whole load of

[2418.35] Cerb: It's very difficult to do. It's very techy because dji doesn't really work for racing and
[2425.47] Cerb: A race director would have to invest into even more equipment and even more stuff to try and stream it
[2432.59] Cerb: Yeah, so dji is a no-go for racing
[2434.91] Cerb: But if i'm going freestyling i'm getting my dji goggles, which are on the shelf up there
[2439.71] Stephen: Yeah, because dji's like frank was saying this where it's at this discontinuity between racing and freestyle
[2445.09] Stephen: Continues with the two parties having different needs
[2448.05] Stephen: It's no longer a generalist pastime where you can take a freestyle quad and and go rate
[2453.17] Stephen: What you could but not dji
[2455.57] Stephen: But if you take a race squad with your hd0 gear you could technically freestyle it
[2460.05] Stephen: But you're going to just going to have a better experience if you've got something that
[2463.65] Stephen: Is dji or walk snail with that retransmission?
[2467.17] Cerb: Yeah, it's the equipment for the job, you know, you know that you you wouldn't enter a formula one race in a in a rally car

[2477.01] Cerb: Uh the advent of hd0 has been really amazing for us because it gives us that hd quality
[2483.17] Cerb: But it's on the usual raceband channels. It can be timed by the lap timers

[2495.49] Cerb: Uh, so that's a hd0 event vrx
[2498.87] Cerb: Um, so that is uh, just a nondescript gray box

[2509.67] Cerb: That gives you that gives you four outputs four hdmi outputs. I've got two of those which will give me eight outputs
[2516.55] Cerb: And that's what I can use to to stream the video and it will stream analog and hd0

[2526.23] Cerb: with the hdmi
[2528.05] Cerb: multiplexer
[2529.91] Cerb: That's a grand and a half's worth of gear
[2532.55] Cerb: So that I can stream the so I can stream the races

[2536.55] Cerb: So that's a it's a big investment for race directors and the the bdra have actually managed to put together their own set of that kit
[2544.15] Cerb: And if you want to do a five inch race, you can give them a call and say can I borrow?
[2547.99] Cerb: the event vrx's
[2549.51] Cerb: um because i'm I want to go off and I want to do fbv racing solutions and I want to do the wing races and the
[2555.51] Cerb: Woop races and the x-class races and the five inch races i've invested in my own kit
[2560.15] Cerb: And that will be permanently installed in the trailer. So I can do that. But yeah, hd0 is is where it's at
[2567.67] Cerb: There were a few races early in the season where i'm pretty sure the split was about 50 percent
[2573.57] Cerb: hd0 and analog
[2575.11] Cerb: I think there might have been a small dip in hd0. I think there's a couple of pilots that found it a bit fragile
[2582.47] Cerb: um
[2583.83] Cerb: Because it is quite early days. Don't forget. It's quite an early technology
[2587.43] Stephen: It was struggling with things like retention clips on the ufl. I think
[2593.27] Cerb: But it's improved now so the vtx is the latest vtx's are much better
[2598.47] Cerb: Uh, the new cameras that are coming along are really good. We've got a 4 3 nano camera now
[2604.47] Cerb: Uh, and of course the hd0 goggles are are coming in the next sort of couple of weeks. We hope
[2610.87] Cerb: Um, so you won't have to have all sorts of weird gubbins hanging off the front of your goggles anymore
[2616.07] Cerb: Um, which I think is really going to help it
[2618.87] Stephen: It sounds like for racing they've really improved the glass to glass latency with those goggles
[2623.19] Stephen: It's like an optimized signal path rather than the hdmi signal path. That was
[2627.75] Cerb: Not great by the sound effect. Yeah, if if they deliver half of what they've promised it's going to be amazing
[2633.51] Cerb: Uh, and it's great as I i'm fully hd now i'm hd0 on all three of my race quads
[2639.75] Cerb: Uh, because two is one and one is none, right? That's why I have three. It's not that's a sas thing
[2645.91] Cerb: Um, and the difference in being able to actually see your opponent
[2650.71] Cerb: Um is huge
[2652.71] Cerb: Uh to actually be able to get an overtake done
[2656.55] Cerb: And see see the the whites of their props
[2663.51] Cerb: Is uh, yeah, it's a real benefit
[2666.23] Cerb: I don't know about the real real quick guys
[2668.79] Cerb: It'd be interesting actually to ask someone like soul like what they think
[2672.55] Cerb: Of the difference because I I suspect that they're going so fast that it's mostly instinct anyway
[2678.79] Cerb: Um, and if you get a free turning for example, right? Yeah, if you gave them analog and and hd0 back to back
[2686.71] Cerb: Would it make them any quicker?

[2689.99] Cerb: I I have a slight suspicion that you could probably blindfold soul and he could fly that truck anyway
[2695.35] Cerb: Because there's a lot of muscle memory

[2700.79] Curry: Look where they're going as such not not in the same way that we would like there's a gate
[2704.55] Curry: I must go through it. The gate just comes up out peripheral vision as they just
[2709.27] Stephen: Through very very looking at least one gate ahead lining themselves for the line
[2713.27] Stephen: They need to hit the gate after the one they're about to fly through. Yeah. Yeah
[2716.79] Cerb: Yeah, so they're going through that gate sideways or backwards or however they need to yeah as an ex like track racer. Um
[2724.87] Cerb: Looking through the corner is like what what you do in a car. Those guys are looking through the gate to the next gate
[2731.83] Cerb: that
[2732.95] Cerb: They're not even concentrating. They're literally looking at the gate
[2736.47] Cerb: Ahead of the gate they're flying through
[2738.55] Cerb: Um and lining up for that and finding the quickest lines
[2742.55] Cerb: Yeah, the the reaction times on these these top guys are amazing
[2748.15] Frank: And what about um
[2749.75] Frank: the actual
[2750.87] Frank: craft themselves, I mean
[2753.43] Frank: What what's the sort of typical frame size and prop size and batteries and counts and all that kind of thing

[3046.55] Stephen: On the system and then it would talk to the race organizer and the race organizer could even arbitrate and be like well

[3066.47] Cerb: The lap timer could have a backpack built in or something like that

[3076.31] Cerb: It needs beings immensely more devious than myself to sit there and do some coding and figure that sort of stuff out

[3085.51] Cerb: So so people like live time so we're tied to live time because it does what we need it to do

[3095.11] Cerb: So lifetime is the the timing software that we use to run the race
[3099.75] Frank: And it's it's used way outside of even rc right is it's used for like all sorts of types of racing
[3106.95] Frank: Usually with the infrared beacons. That's
[3110.39] Frank: I've even seen like people with go-karting use live time with infrared beacons the same ones that were on quads like

[3120.31] Cerb: RC car racing for full-size car racing for drag racing
[3124.79] Stephen: All all sorts of stuff and we've got some interface between like the lap rf stuff and lifetime

[3135.75] Cerb: Uh, there's there's also the the rotor hazard stuff. So the rotor hazard timers

[3165.59] Cerb: Look for the uh for the for the rssi so it draws a graph of rssi over time
[3171.51] Cerb: They're sitting there pointing upwards in the start finish gate
[3175.03] Cerb: So quad comes across it sees a peek in the video signal, you know, it's crossed the line
[3181.03] Cerb: Rotor hazard is is really amazing open source project
[3184.95] Stephen: Um, I've got two of these they're great things. You're quite heavily involved. I think you were mentioning rotor hazard when we spoke to you last

[3193.03] Cerb: Um, so i've not been using rotor hazard for the last 12 months
[3198.07] Cerb: Because I was doing quite so much bqe stuff. Um, it was

[3206.39] Cerb: And rotor hazard wasn't really able to do
[3209.59] Cerb: The types of races that we run so it didn't understand the race format
[3215.43] Cerb: But there's actually just been a release or uh an update to rotor hazard
[3220.47] Cerb: And i'm told it has the 30 second grace period now and
[3223.91] Cerb: And that develops some of that stuff that we needed to use. So
[3227.51] Cerb: Hopefully i'm gonna update these two and see what they do
[3231.11] Cerb: But the lap rfa is is bomb proof, you know, it does what you need
