Thank you to call us campus art folk now Sam Dharma on with the show [23.16] Curry: Hold on I've been called away [54.63] Curry: We'll start again in a second. Yeah, take take four. Hold on. Yeah, welcome to your weekly fast and drone podcast [62.19] Stephen: Let's drone out [64.63] Jack: How how good is your curry kitten impression? I [73.9] Stephen: Really lack the hair required. I mean if I had a selection of weeks, I could probably go for it [79.78] Jack: Um, well, I'll give it a go. Hello and you're listening to let's throw now look back [85.22] Jack: Tonight we are joined by everyone's favorite curry kitten. Hello [89.5] Jack: and [91.38] Jack: Everyone's favorite must-have Stephen [93.98] Jack: Hello, and I'm bright till I fly. Hello and [98.22] Jack: Welcome to the show [100.34] Stephen: Here we are another week again. I'm back. Everyone's favorite has returned. That was a [106.34] Curry: Radiator delivery. I apologize for that [110.1] Curry: These things happy [112.14] Stephen: To thank all our patrons without whom such professionalism and adherence to duty would be not possible [118.46] Jack: Yeah, I know [120.06] Jack: This is it's so amazing [122.38] Jack: You're amazing. So are you [125.06] Jack: Here here's just a few of them to mention them like Chris and [130.78] Jack: Richard's Alexander mark. Thank you guys Andrew Lawrence [135.98] Jack: I [137.14] Stephen: Will try and get to race castle. I said I do it last week and I completely just forgot [141.42] Jack: I was I was hoping that would be in your news your little adventure [147.9] Stephen: Yeah, I completely got sidetracked by being sent a board to experiment with and then the board not working [154.86] Stephen: And me just getting furious at whoops for a couple of days and ending up in a really foul mood [159.1] Stephen: And then I went and bought some happy model stuff that works much better [163.38] Stephen: Than an alternate vendor who we shall not name [166.7] Stephen: And I've since re-created my [169.94] Stephen: mobular [171.66] Stephen: Mob light 7 with E LRS and the 400 milliwatt ludicrous VTX [176.62] Stephen: Which is only using a tiny little bit of bent wire, which is kind of a waste of 400 milliwatt [182.42] Stephen: But yeah, it flies really nice now and go around the house without fail-saving, which is nice [187.42] Stephen: I used to get to the bottom the stairs and have to like clench in case I fail-safe [193.54] Stephen: Yeah, that's a thing of the past now. Thank God. I don't know about you guys [198.82] Curry: and maybe you're using something HD there Steven that's I used to get a pretty clean video signal in the house and [207.38] Curry: since covert times and [209.78] Curry: there just seems to be a lot more interference around so [213.74] Curry: We can solve the control signal finally by getting rid of the horrible [217.62] Curry: SBI d8 type receivers and go to ERS, but the video signal to me still seems a bit nasty [223.26] Stephen: Yeah, this is still an analog guy. This is like a 19 gram. Whoop. So there's no HD on there [229.42] Stephen: I don't want like 2 minute 40 flight times coming down with burning hot batteries [236.98] Stephen: Anywhere to go. Yeah, and I need 400 milliwatt. Basically the latest batch of happy model boards [242.62] Stephen: They've got this one with the rubbish copper antenna [246.26] Stephen: They've also got the x12, which is they're like primo slightly heavier board [251.38] Stephen: This one's got plugs that actually sold a woot motors onto the other one, which is like doing surgery on insects [257.62] Stephen: but but this guy's got a [260.3] Stephen: 400 milliwatt VTX takes one to 2s [263.5] Stephen: And supposedly has 12 amp ESCs, although they're like 12 amp with ludicrously long dead time so they don't work that well [271.26] Stephen: But yeah, it's got a proper dipole on 400 milliwatt, which means in [275.74] Stephen: Yeah, post covid land with everyone with their nice Wi-Fi boosters. I can actually fly out of this room [281.98] Stephen: Two meters to the top of the stairs down the stairs and I can make a turn into the living room [288.42] Stephen: Without losing video signal, which is actually not possible on any transmitter [294.14] Stephen: That's less than 200 milliwatt. It seems which is just bananas [298.58] Stephen: There's a lot of RF interference around here, too [301.38] Curry: Yeah, I used to be able to go out here fly downstairs and the conservatory round the side alley [308.1] Curry: Where there's a big brick wall and still be okay, but that's that seems to be a thing of the past [312.98] Curry: but I do have some I [316.3] Curry: Suppose I was normally using 25, but I do have some like 350 200 milliwatt boots now use them instead. I [323.5] Stephen: Did find out I'm not getting far on 25 especially with these suboptimal enamel wire antennas [330.86] Jack: Yeah, they're not the best and I'm a little bit I thought I was more prepared than I was [337.38] Jack: but I [338.94] Jack: Have I just want to get I just want to get my video of I went flying the weekend Saturday [346.86] Jack: Oh [350.22] Stephen: Where did you go flying this is proper outdoors flying not just one line. Yeah [357.18] Jack: Was it a hidden valley? Yes, it was [362.06] Jack: The happy place that I reside in and [367.82] Jack: I'm just trying to do you learn any new moves while you're loading up the V the DVR any new tricks [375.3] Jack: No [376.7] Jack: No, it was very much a sort of like de-rust and I had I had what I can only describe [385.06] Jack: as a as an incident and [387.9] Jack: I'm hoping I've got it recording [392.5] Stephen: Recorded a close call. Did did the participants survive the incident? Did you fly backwards into a hill? [400.3] Jack: No, it was kind of worse than that. I [404.98] Curry: Was into a pond you're eating now [408.42] Jack: No, so there's a there's a big large [413.5] Jack: Like sheds within Hidden Valley and it looks like it didn't [420.14] Jack: Here we go. I have I have the flight. So this is this is me at him Valley [424.78] Jack: I don't know whether it will be a bit of a slideshow that's coming across fine [429.02] Jack: Actually doing all right fine to me. Well, you're running what like a hundred s battery there 414 volts. That's quite a lot [436.3] Jack: Yeah, yeah normal. Yeah [441.18] Jack: You know when to land [443.94] Jack: When it stands like 50 volts [446.34] Jack: It's gone up to 14 volts now [449.46] Jack: That's cool [451.58] Stephen: Nothing. Have you told it like the RSSI input is the battery input or something? [457.12] Jack: This is the joy of using kiss and fat tech fat tech stuff just doesn't really seem to [464.6] Jack: cheap [465.92] Jack: Well, the sheep I'm I'm being an asshole to the sheep and it it it bites. It bites me on the arse [474.44] Jack: As you will soon see [476.64] Jack: So notice how I'm [478.64] Jack: I [485.52] Curry: Like the way you like I'm in trouble here what I should do is get my throttle and just [494.52] Jack: Mode and then [497.84] Stephen: Into the wall [501.92] Jack: So [502.92] Jack: Take it a while to clear up [505.24] Jack: Yeah, well, yeah, I've got I've got some treats for you [508.6] Jack: Would you would you like individual photos or what you like sheep mutant that you have created? [516.72] Jack: Yeah, or would you like? [519.12] Jack: This is so much so, you know, like you I admit it. I crashed [524.68] Jack: I didn't fail safe. I crashed as you can see on the video. I entered a big large building of the shed [530.56] Jack: I crashed and I got tied up with the wall. Now. I'm in the sort of, you know, LDO sort of [539.32] Jack: You know, I'm hoping that you guys will will will won't spare me and the repage will continue [547.48] Jack: Would you like? [549.32] Jack: the gif they've [552.0] Jack: Magical pencils made a gif of of I don't see how we could ever refuse [560.56] Jack: Photos, let's let's go go with the evidence of them asking. Okay, like so here is the gift [574.28] Jack: Yep, so hang on we are going we're gonna go through we're gonna go through the pictures now [580.84] Jack: So how much will you attach to just one quad? [585.4] Stephen: it's it's [588.4] Stephen: The motors but for our audio listeners Jack appears to have roughly half a sheep attached to his quad [595.04] Curry: Did you check there wasn't like internal organs? You haven't just killed a small sheep [599.0] Jack: I'm I'm a six-foot dude, right and I mistakenly you could wear that as a wig and I'm being a heavy metal movie [607.0] Jack: It's it's bigger than my hair, which for anyone who knows what I look like [611.76] Jack: That's quite a statement and I [615.12] Jack: Mistakenly went into that shed [617.72] Jack: Without my glasses as a a curry would know as a FPV wearer, you know, you [624.08] Jack: You know you go you you've got the goggles on and you have to put your glasses [628.16] Jack: Then I went to rescue my quad because I thought it's gonna be it's gonna be overheating. It's inside. It's covered in wool [634.68] Curry: This is like essentially Thelma and Scooby-Doo. I've lost my [638.58] Curry: It [640.58] Jack: Literally, all you can see is the GoPro and a battery. I see a battery [646.7] Curry: Maybe maybe an antenna there. Is that an old fat shark one? So did you shave your quad? [655.14] Jack: Did you find a shearer an official man it was like some clinkers it was just [661.58] Stephen: It was I imagine you sitting down in the next pose where your quad [665.62] Stephen: Sort of tucked between your thighs and you're just going at it with the shears just taking big chunks of wool off it [672.94] Curry: Did you put it on a spinning wheel and weave yourself a jumper or something? [680.1] Jack: Yeah, it had I mean it smell like asshole [684.3] Curry: There's no other way of dealing it does look like it's covered in as well apart from that wall [690.62] Stephen: It's a string [693.62] Stephen: Scenarios don't you so you multi-row it's your ideal day out [697.78] Jack: So you couldn't really pull the wool apart because it was tied up with the rope as well [703.3] Jack: so it was just literally bending the props out and [711.1] Jack: Like you know how I've been saying for a while, you know, I haven't [716.26] Jack: You know, I haven't really sort of like felt right by the way, that's the cute dog. We were with [723.26] Jack: Little demons little face [728.3] Jack: So if anyone wants to make a [731.82] Jack: funny [732.94] Jack: Meme of that [734.78] Curry: At least you had a designated driver. That's quite handy. Yeah [739.06] Jack: So I you know, like I was saying, you know like with the with the FPV [744.46] Jack: I've been really struggling with anxiety [746.94] Jack: And I find it really really difficult when I'm prepping to go [752.1] Jack: You know to get there and fly so as soon as I get to the field [756.3] Jack: Usually back in the old days. It was really calm because like hey, I'm really excited [760.58] Jack: You know they get to fly but it's the whole getting a battery out strapping it on [764.74] Jack: you know getting the goggles and sawing everything out and I [769.38] Jack: I likened it to [772.7] Jack: Like you know when you put on a t-shirt and it just [776.46] Jack: Doesn't fit right and you go out and you make the mistake of going out with that ill-fitting shirt [785.66] Jack: That's kind of that's kind of how I like [792.18] Jack: You know kind of felt for the for the longest time [798.34] Jack: with [800.7] Jack: With with my flying and I just kind of I couldn't put my finger on it [805.66] Jack: I just didn't feel right and as you will as you'll see I can [812.74] Stephen: Maybe now you're what stinks of sheep. Do you feel like you've got that catharsis? [818.66] Jack: Not yet. I'm gonna show you some more sort of [822.58] Jack: More crashes so that you guys can like, you know [828.3] Stephen: Rip you did look like you were kind of really [832.1] Stephen: Jumping around a bit like you're a little a little bit twitchy like you really wanted to push it in that that yeah [837.94] Jack: And it just don't see see the clue. I don't I wonder if anyone [844.98] Jack: sort of [846.58] Jack: notices like I [849.46] Jack: Could I could really do with like the sort of like stick overlay and I've got one more [854.58] Jack: I've got one more view I can imagine [856.9] Stephen: From those movements that you're you're quite clenched because the movements are pretty exaggerated [862.7] Curry: It's a bit jagged. It looks like you went over then you over corrected back and then you [867.46] Curry: It went all a bit down here. You know, I'm flying a spiral of doom [870.98] Jack: Yeah, it was [872.78] Jack: let me pause this one one last one for you and [877.3] Jack: I just wondered if you you know, like I [881.7] Stephen: Agree with everything you say wasn't you it was the dog all along like it's [886.58] Stephen: Yeah, yeah, that is [889.86] Stephen: When you're driving a car at the time you can't do both. Oh not again not again into the shed again. Yeah [897.54] Jack: Points [899.14] Stephen: He was on the verge of making it to freedom [901.54] Stephen: But the shed curse hit him again and he clipped the post on the way out and spun out [906.66] Curry: it looks a bit like [909.38] Curry: The the smoothness has gone you're in there and there's a little bit of panic going on [914.02] Stephen: And you sort of threaten you like you're you're worrying about being uh [919.54] Stephen: You know accosted while you've got your goggles on or something like there's someone who might prank you [925.06] Jack: yeah, well anyway, I [927.86] Jack: I I basically I couldn't put my finger on it and I was starting to sort of like [933.86] Jack: Doubt my ability [935.62] Jack: To fly because like a lot of the time i'll fly people and go, you know, or people will watch [941.7] Jack: Head forbid watch a video of mine go. Oh [944.26] Jack: He can actually fly [946.1] Jack: so [947.06] Jack: He he here is my excuse [950.58] Jack: and and and maybe the possibility [953.54] Jack: And I I literally [955.22] Jack: It's full of wool. It's all full of wool. No [958.58] Stephen: Can you see you see your your isn't actually work. What the hell is going on there? [964.26] Stephen: So have you mixed your your and your throttle somehow what's going on there? [969.22] Jack: No, this is this is a funny enough a um [974.02] Jack: a problem that i've run into [976.26] Jack: before [977.86] Jack: And it's a weird thing. I wasn't getting the full your value and it was intermittently happening [984.82] Jack: and [985.78] Jack: That's happened to me before and basically the only thing I can [990.58] Jack: Say what it is because obviously i've got hall effects [993.46] Jack: uh [994.26] Jack: sensor gimbals [995.94] Jack: And to cut a long story short all I can say is it looked like I had spilt [1002.32] Jack: barbecue sauce into my trim switch [1005.54] Jack: So I had to put that through the on the ultrasonic cleaner [1009.86] Stephen: And then I had like how you could be so specific like it wasn't ketchup [1015.06] Stephen: It wasn't marmite. It wasn't jam. It was clearly barbecue sauce. Yeah barbecue sauce. This is what it is [1021.38] Jack: As you can see like i've got the ultrasonic cleaner so I was cleaning the trim switch [1026.5] Jack: but also [1027.7] Jack: when I [1028.74] Jack: Then enhance enhance look I took my gimbal completely apart to find out that, you know, i've got a [1035.78] Jack: Because you had to do a condiment analysis [1037.86] Jack: Yeah, and it seems that I have got what I can only describe as black [1044.82] Jack: goo [1045.54] Jack: in my [1046.66] Stephen: Transmitter like gimbal right, but but that's not the sensor right the the hall sensor. That's the magnet [1053.22] Stephen: That sits up right. Yeah, but you can't like [1056.02] Stephen: Pour something on a magnet and make it behave differently. Can you? [1059.62] Jack: I don't know but whatever it was [1063.54] Jack: Yeah, that that's what that was happening and I just kind of because it was [1067.62] Jack: Into me intermittent. I was just I thought I was absolutely losing my mind [1074.18] Jack: And then, you know, I kept crashing in stupid ones [1078.58] Stephen: And then you know, okay, did you get some crap on the little pcb that goes on top of it where they're absolutely fine [1085.3] Jack: I replaced the glue the only the only thing was this that sort of like black [1092.18] Jack: Smooth on the magnet, which I don't see how that would affect it and there was some crap in my um [1100.18] Jack: You know, I don't even eat barbecue sauce, but whatever went in [1103.94] Jack: In my transmitter that that was that was the issue and it would only come up now and again, but yeah now [1112.82] Curry: Did you try tasting it to establish what sort of sauce it was [1116.74] Jack: I didn't really [1118.9] Jack: Yeah, I didn't really sort of like get to that stage [1122.18] Jack: but uh, whatever it was it was uh brown and [1126.74] Jack: gunky [1128.18] Jack: and just [1129.78] Stephen: Yeah, I think just in general you don't want corrosive liquids inside radios just as a rule of thumb [1136.5] Curry: Yeah, I wouldn't normally ask this but given it was you jack. Is there any possibility? It was just poo that got in there somehow [1143.78] Jack: That is the only next thing that I could have thought of [1147.54] Jack: But the the thing is that led me all I had to do was like compare the sniff of my quad now [1154.1] Jack: To the sniff of the gimbal and it wasn't it didn't have that cheap shit [1158.58] Jack: That is reassuring [1161.06] Jack: and [1162.1] Jack: You know usually although I am known to excrete everywhere [1168.42] Stephen: Maybe maybe I defecated one time you're in the bushes reaching for a leaf and you you've got your tyrannis [1176.5] Jack: I mean that is a sound bite there tone. That's one for you. I may have defecated into my transmitter [1184.26] Jack: What's around sticky jack's transmitter? [1188.5] Jack: The the lick test so all right, so [1193.46] Stephen: The fix for this [1194.98] Stephen: you know the the nuclear option instead of [1197.78] Stephen: Tearing it all down and polishing it up is just to get a new gimbal. Are you able to just get a new gimbal? [1205.86] Jack: I took it all apart. I cleaned it. I've put it back together [1210.74] Jack: It's done. It's over now. Okay. Okay. Well done [1214.58] Curry: I have a serious question [1216.66] Curry: That has come up because of this and this this goes to you guys and everyone in the chat because i'm interested to know [1222.5] Curry: Now what you did there when you crashed? [1224.98] Curry: Um in the shed is you went into turtle mode to try and get out of trouble [1229.62] Curry: I want to know from you guys if turtle mode is something you generally use because although it's [1234.82] Curry: Super useful. I find like around the house when doing whoops and stuff outside [1239.78] Curry: I've got my quad back only to find that [1242.58] Curry: Ah [1243.38] Curry: Where's my gopro or where's my antenna or where's something because it's come off and if if it's down and you just go find it [1250.42] Curry: Then you know, it's pretty obvious that the bits that fell off are going to be quite around there. So i'm very very nervous [1256.02] Stephen: I'm, I'm, worried about have I have I lost a prop have I bent a prop out of shape? [1261.3] Stephen: Have I got a loose arm? [1263.46] Stephen: Am I going to end up coming back with really hot motors and thrashing them not realizing so rather than just trying to [1270.26] Stephen: Use turtle mode and limp back. I I usually just turn on the beeper make the walk of shame and I only use it for whoops [1277.86] Stephen: I fly in the woods a lot [1279.3] Stephen: So even if i'm flying a five inch or even a seven inch, right? [1283.46] Stephen: If I come down in a bunch of brambles [1286.66] Stephen: That motor is still going to be jammed [1290.5] Stephen: Right, and I don't want to burn the motor out [1292.66] Stephen: And even if i'm flying in if I fly in a park and i'm flying like 1104s or something like that [1298.26] Stephen: Grass is enough that they could just jam up the motor. So yeah turtle mode for me. Isn't that useful outside of whoops? [1305.62] Jack: only [1306.9] Jack: Very rarely use turtle mode. I use turtle mode in that case because I did not want to go in there [1313.94] Jack: In that shed [1315.46] Jack: But I had to go only if making it a hundred times worse is brilliant. Yeah. Yeah, I had to go in there [1321.3] Jack: I made it worse [1322.9] Jack: and I had to [1325.22] Jack: Not only did it make my quad harder to find [1328.74] Jack: Because it wrapped itself in wool and the whole floor was covered in wool. So it just blended in more [1335.3] Jack: And how did you clean the quad afterwards? Did you just cut the whole thing in iso? I just [1340.58] Jack: Burn it. I don't I just [1343.94] Jack: It's in a plastic bag hanging outside [1346.66] Jack: I'll be honest you I took it apart [1349.14] Jack: And I removed everything metal electronics and then I sprayed it with [1354.66] Jack: Multi-purpose flash cleaner and scrubbed it [1358.02] Jack: um, I I done that so [1361.62] Jack: hard the um [1364.1] Jack: The the the dink on the thing. I actually broke my top plate [1368.82] Jack: That this this corner has been [1371.86] Jack: glued glued back on [1374.58] Jack: um [1376.26] Jack: No, yeah, it's uh, no from like probably hitting the wall [1380.5] Jack: but yeah, it [1382.5] Jack: And and and the other thing is is that because I don't have a dedicated beeper and i'm using the motors because no room in that [1389.38] Jack: BAM frame anymore [1391.22] Jack: It muddled the motors because they're [1394.42] Jack: Rubbed up with wool. So if it wasn't for the like little blinky flashy led lights lighting up the wall and the wall [1402.82] Jack: Kind of you know using the sort of fiber optic [1407.28] Jack: Qualities of the wall. I would have never found it in that dark [1412.18] Jack: awful smelling [1414.74] Stephen: Hell can we go back to your esc voltage? [1418.58] Stephen: issues as well [1420.18] Jack: Well, that's that's that's fat tech that that is [1424.42] Stephen: Is that because you're getting voltage from the esc sensor and it's just crap because normally the fc has the brilliant sea of kiss [1432.74] Curry: Which a you have to buy those [1435.3] Curry: It doesn't even fly like that. All right fat tech this whatever and it doesn't even tell you that [1440.58] Curry: So when do you know how to land? Do you just have to like oh, it's it's run out of power now [1446.5] Curry: I'll crash it. Not all your life goes every time [1449.54] Jack: I just kind of [1453.06] Stephen: And also if you're not like you fix everything and seem to have this kind of must-fix mentality about electronics if you're not like [1460.26] Stephen: surely [1461.38] Stephen: I can't believe all kiss users fly like that [1463.46] Curry: Surely that's just impossible that was that would get in my wick if I had a funny a funny display of doing [1469.94] Jack: All right, okay. All right, so I [1473.62] Jack: Basically, you know the whole must-fix [1477.22] Jack: That's what yes, you're right steven. I have the must-fix and the thing that's been [1484.02] Jack: The the thing that i've been battling with is i've i've been doing some low [1489.46] Jack: some board repair on [1491.94] Jack: my [1493.06] Jack: This this is my uh kiss ultra [1496.34] Jack: um [1497.46] Jack: You know by uh, the federal something that's not like the others there [1501.94] Jack: Yeah, and i've i've i've had to jump a wire and i've only just [1506.98] Jack: fixed it [1508.42] Jack: so, um [1510.1] Jack: the reason [1511.78] Jack: I haven't really sort of done [1513.78] Jack: Anything with the fat tech thing is because I don't know about the updates. I haven't looked at the updates [1519.46] Jack: I mean I haven't [1521.3] Jack: And regards to knowing when my battery's done. I haven't been able to like kind of stay in the air long enough [1527.86] Jack: and [1528.66] Jack: You know because now and again all of a sudden my yore doesn't work and I just couldn't figure out like [1535.3] Jack: What it was and I was so relieved [1538.34] Jack: Like an epic like no nut november. I've just made it to the end [1543.54] Jack: I was like i'm not insane. There was actually something wrong. I just couldn't figure it out [1549.46] Jack: and [1550.42] Jack: With the help from alexander. I've now fixed my kiss ultra [1556.18] Jack: so i've [1557.86] Jack: fixed this [1559.7] Jack: uh, which is a [1561.7] Jack: um [1562.74] Jack: something or other [1564.34] Jack: And uh, yeah, i'm not sure the f7 one [1567.7] Jack: or the g4 [1569.38] Jack: Or the h7 one. It's not the g4. That's [1573.3] Jack: Um, I don't know what chip it is. Hang on [1577.06] Stephen: It is we've done a whole thing about it's an mpu 6000. I can see on there, but yeah [1583.22] Stephen: STM 32 h7 [1586.82] Stephen: The h7 fancy one. Well, I can see where you want to fix it then [1590.42] Jack: yeah, and it's a [1592.1] Jack: ball grid array and basically [1594.98] Jack: the effect tech thing I like [1597.54] Jack: Every time I plug it in everyone's like what the hell's that because it sounds like some sort of dalek having [1603.62] Jack: weird dumpster sex [1606.42] Jack: and [1608.66] Jack: Um, like it just reads off [1611.14] Jack: Um, it really sort of messed up crazy numbers [1616.9] Jack: For the the voltage it did work for a while [1620.66] Jack: And then I kind of done a few punch outs and then it sort of like read 9000 here and there and there's never [1628.74] Jack: Mr. Federer [1630.1] Stephen: If you are listening, please please make some of your child this this poor poor child and help [1636.18] Stephen: Through this troubling phase i've [1637.94] Jack: I've done it to myself because i'm using fact tech, you know, it's you know, um a beta flight board at all [1645.94] Stephen: Feel it. I don't know. I've got 30 beta flight boards and i've had something like this on one [1652.42] Stephen: One of those and I fixed it by just reading the voltage off the esc telemetry instead [1658.26] Stephen: Which worked fine [1660.98] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience [1664.18] Frank: Downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only [1667.7] Frank: Censored to please the itunes people hosted on the internet forwarded through to your podcast provider [1672.5] Frank: Downloaded playing on your device and is now playing in your ears all. Thanks to our patreons [1678.26] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits [1681.7] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com [1684.74] Frank: Let's drone out [1686.74] Jack: Can you give us some beta flight news because you were mentioning oh, yeah [1690.18] Stephen: No, worries. No stuff coming out this time shock horror shock horror after the massive protracted soap opera [1697.22] Stephen: That was the beta flight 4.3 release which [1700.58] Stephen: looked like some kind of [1703.14] Stephen: Odysseus length voyage of of testing and retesting an infinite number of release candidates [1710.02] Stephen: What's your reference like it? Yeah emphatic [1713.4] Stephen: emphatic that they wanted to set a cadence and stick to it and the result of this is that [1721.32] Stephen: Ready or not? [1722.84] Stephen: Come the start of november [1725.08] Stephen: There will be a feature freeze and if a a feature hasn't appeared by then it ain't going to get tested and they ain't going to [1731.72] Stephen: Let it in [1733.32] Stephen: Bug fixes will be allowed in but the features will be frozen and the aim is to try and drop beta flight [1739.32] Stephen: Maybe late this year if not exceedingly early next year [1743.16] Stephen: And we've got some pretty wacky little features that that are coming in. There's going to be some massive gps return home improvements [1750.28] Stephen: It's going to be sampling the gps at a faster rate [1753.56] Stephen: The algorithm is completely rewritten the arming and disarming algorithms completely rewritten [1758.52] Stephen: There's more intelligence to sense whether it's hitting the ground or not once it's returned home [1763.32] Stephen: So it won't turn into a bouncing flying death blender as it had done previously [1767.8] Stephen: It won't return to you like a guided missile because you can tune the pits for a gps return home [1773.72] Stephen: And if you have a barometer [1775.32] Stephen: It will now descend sedately because it was discovered that attempting to use gps to measure altitude [1781.4] Stephen: Is uh is is urinating into the wind? [1784.28] Stephen: Uh, it wasn't helping anyone [1785.88] Stephen: So the addition of a barometer makes for a much more sedate and calm descent rather than a glitchy stop start [1792.6] Curry: Terrifying to say I mean to be fair barometers can certainly go out [1796.04] Curry: So you often find yourself flying along at like minus something but the difference as you go up and down [1802.44] Curry: It can sense that quite nicely can't it? [1805.32] Stephen: So that there's much more averaging and smoothing going into the whole algorithm in general. I find that the most exciting feature [1811.24] Curry: I wasn't excited by beta flight for free, but the fact they've um [1815.64] Curry: They've actually because I think some of us were saying for a long time [1818.76] Curry: It's like well you can sort of derive direction and stuff from a gps without a compass [1823.88] Curry: You just have to you know work it out by by taking note of where you were and where you are now and [1830.04] Curry: Therefore you can work out the direction you're going. So i'm really glad someone grabbed hold of that because yeah, you can't do [1836.6] Curry: It it can't ever be as smooth as like I know exactly where i'm facing all times like and stop and rotate and stuff [1841.96] Curry: But you can potentially come along [1844.84] Curry: And I think did you mention it had a couple of modes like come back and hover or come back and land right? [1850.28] Stephen: So this is going to be coming in I think in future releases i'm not sure whether they've got that but there's going to be some additional [1856.76] Stephen: Fail-safe behaviors right now your fail-safe behaviors are you know? [1860.84] Stephen: You've got the standard wait for an amount of time in stage one and then enter stage two and [1867.08] Stephen: Stage two is typically cut the motors or descend [1870.2] Stephen: Most people just cut the motors because you never know quite what's happening once you've lost a signal [1876.04] Stephen: Um, and that's where gps return to home comes in when you enter stage two it's going to then plot a course home [1882.84] Stephen: The option that was being discussed is instead of return to home [1887.08] Stephen: Well, maybe you're flying somewhere where plotting a [1891.88] Stephen: You know crows [1894.2] Stephen: Of course as the crow flies course straight home is dangerous. For instance, you could have flown [1900.28] Stephen: Into a tunnel you could have flown behind a building you could have flown anywhere you for instance [1908.28] Stephen: It will try and return home at a set height [1911.32] Stephen: Or it will choose the maximum height that you've reached in your flight [1914.6] Stephen: But if you've flown around the side of a building and now you lost signal [1919.16] Stephen: It could run straight into the building when it tries to return home and in those situations [1923.96] Stephen: People have suggested especially if you're carrying very expensive camera [1927.72] Stephen: If you're doing some filming with this quad that a much better approach is to position hold [1932.84] Stephen: So instead of fail-saving and dropping instead of trying to descend instead of trying to return home [1937.96] Stephen: You simply use the gps to lock you in place lock you at height and wait in the hopes that [1945.16] Stephen: You quickly come running around the side of the building waving your radio in the air [1950.04] Stephen: Like you're reaching for heaven and you lock into the quad and all of a sudden you can get control back [1955.48] Stephen: And your expensive camera is no longer going to end up [1958.76] Stephen: Spread across a brick wall or or smashed on the ground [1963.08] Stephen: So that that's something that people have talked about [1965.48] Stephen: I'm not sure whether it's arriving in this release or whether it's coming in the next one. I need to double check on that [1971.48] Stephen: there's some other interesting bits and bobs though, which people really should test so they can make it into the release and [1977.8] Stephen: This is this is the point of feature freeze you draw a line in the sand and you say if this hasn't been [1983.4] Stephen: Um tested and isn't ready. It can't come in [1987.0] Stephen: We've got some some other bits and pieces that need review which are things like gps lap timers [1994.36] Stephen: There's a feature coming in where you can nominate a position on the map with gps [1998.76] Stephen: And you can use that to say that's where my start gate is [2002.2] Stephen: so if you don't have an expensive lap rf or if you just fancy [2005.96] Stephen: I'm in the park and there's like something that looks like a bit of a course and you just want to have a bit of [2010.04] Stephen: Lark around you to bring anything else with you [2012.04] Stephen: You could nominate a position as as a start stop gate on your imaginary course that you've just drawn up [2018.36] Stephen: And you can just fly around it and every time you pass through this location [2021.64] Stephen: It's going to cap count and give you a split lap time and it's going to show you the lap time [2027.0] Stephen: So you can kind of work on on your flying and you can work at making the turns more efficient and smoother and and work on [2033.72] Stephen: The lap times that needs some people to test it and I believe there's another one [2038.04] Stephen: Some racers want to be able to see their heart rate in the osd. And so they've got an open tx [2045.8] Stephen: Patch which enables them to have a heart rate sensor of all things fed in through a channel [2051.0] Stephen: And then the channel can then be taken out. It can be scaled and named and appears in the osd [2057.48] Stephen: See you can use this for anything anything that appears as a channel [2060.52] Stephen: so you could have a servo and give it a name and a scale and set it from [2064.92] Stephen: 0 to 180 degrees for example, and then just show that in the osd [2071.28] Stephen: lots of odd bits and pieces [2073.28] Stephen: But mainly flight improvements with 4.3. There was a ton of filtering improvements [2079.28] Stephen: And with 4.4 [2081.12] Stephen: There's going to be also some more mixer improvements [2084.24] Stephen: There were a couple of edge cases where it turned out if you were running things flat out [2089.04] Stephen: then if you mixed in [2091.44] Stephen: Role and yaw, you could get some discontinuities and the the motor mixer would jump over some values and it wasn't smooth [2098.48] Stephen: And so they they fixed that [2101.2] Stephen: There's also an entirely new build system which is coming up [2105.92] Stephen: so [2107.44] Stephen: We're going to be seeing something called cloud builds, which [2112.32] Stephen: Is is an interesting one. So they have an api [2115.76] Stephen: And they instead of fixing the features that you can fit on an f4 11 [2120.88] Stephen: Or fixing the features you can get on an f7 or even fixing exactly the features you can get on [2127.36] Stephen: some generic happy model board [2130.4] Stephen: You can choose the features you want [2133.04] Stephen: And you know [2134.24] Stephen: There'll be an easy mode where you get to say I want this radio protocol and not that radio protocol [2138.96] Stephen: There may be an advanced mode where you can pass in the names of more obscure features [2142.88] Stephen: so if you really want to try an advanced gps feature in future that might not fit on some of the smaller boards [2148.96] Stephen: If you want to cram something extra in there and take something else out [2152.32] Stephen: There's going to be some smarts that allow you to play tetris with all of the features that beta flight has on offer [2157.36] Stephen: so if you don't have like an f4 0 5 or an h7 board that are [2161.52] Stephen: Gifted with a large amount of flash if you've got one of the smaller boards [2165.6] Stephen: You can sort of try and tessellate all these features in and get something that's you know [2170.24] Stephen: A bit of an odd build and it will go and build that for you [2174.0] Stephen: If for the really popular defaults that everyone's using the results get cached [2179.2] Stephen: So the first time it's built it gets cached. So if you choose just a default you get instant [2185.68] Stephen: Rom, but if you choose something a little bit quirky, it's going to go away in, you know, 90 seconds 120 seconds. How long it takes [2193.04] Stephen: Feeds you back the result and you can download it and flash it. I could get my old akk fix back [2201.04] Stephen: Make me lab. Uh [2203.84] Stephen: Yes [2207.6] Stephen: Yeah, I I actually have a feature branch for that for that akk rdq vtx thing [2213.36] Stephen: Where they put like an extra trailing bite on the smart audio data [2217.6] Stephen: And they misinterpreted the smart audio spec somehow. There was a whole drama about it years ago [2223.36] Stephen: But yeah, that might be something that you can switch on for a firmware exactly [2227.12] Stephen: You could have your akk vtx hack for a firmware [2231.28] Curry: We're today in [2233.76] Curry: one of my [2235.36] Curry: Rush fpv boards, which somebody else mentioned in a youtube comment, which which made me think oh, it's not just me where I think [2243.92] Curry: It might i've asked them about this and it it might be that they've got a mix of versions on the boards [2250.08] Curry: but the boards come up and [2252.8] Curry: They tell you it's smart audio 2.1 [2255.76] Curry: Which requires the dbm values [2258.48] Curry: for each of the vtx table values [2261.36] Curry: And I did this on the 4.3 build and it was stuck in pit mode and it wouldn't change channel [2267.12] Curry: And it was telling me it was smart audio 2.1. But when I changed it to the individual [2273.44] Curry: um [2275.2] Curry: power [2276.8] Curry: Ratings like zero one two three then it worked and it it went back to saying i'm smart audio too [2281.76] Curry: But it's like it's a rush. What what have you done here? [2285.2] Curry: Is it a rush board? [2287.28] Curry: Yeah [2288.64] Stephen: I had exactly the same thing on a rush [2291.28] Stephen: tiny tank [2292.8] Stephen: and then they ship with [2295.04] Stephen: The the mode set to rce or race instead of free and you have to go into the advanced [2301.52] Stephen: A vtx status while it's in pit mode. So you have to hold your screen right next to it and then change it to free [2308.0] Curry: You were unable to do that because that was grayed out while this was happening [2312.16] Curry: Because I I found that that's infuriating as well [2315.12] Curry: Rush, but that was that was really weird [2317.68] Curry: And I thought I I forgot to follow up, but then someone mentioned they were having trouble today [2323.36] Curry: Saying it was stuck in pit mode. It wouldn't change channel. I was like, oh ding. That's just rung a bell [2328.08] Curry: Let me check that and I i've come up with the theory that perhaps [2332.16] Curry: They've got a mix [2333.76] Curry: of different firmware on their boards [2336.72] Curry: Relating to different things but the documentation is only for one of them or something like that [2341.12] Curry: But i'll see if they reply to me [2342.88] Stephen: I was really impressed by the clarity and the apparent build quality of those rush vtxes. I've got a couple of them [2349.84] Stephen: They just kept defaulting back to that race mode instead of free mode and locking me in pit mode when I powered up [2356.56] Stephen: And i'm just sick of them now. I don't really want anything to do with them because I used to always have to [2362.16] Stephen: Hold you you've got to hold the thing like right next to your head when it's on pit mode because the signal is so poor [2367.68] Stephen: And then you've got to like, you know flip through [2370.48] Stephen: The the on-screen display menus to to get it out of pit mode and it just seems unnecessary [2376.4] Stephen: I can't tell why they've made that choice in the firmware. It was all good before about [2381.12] Curry: Be if like four two, I think and then something [2385.2] Curry: Something's not going right with them because I i've always sort of recommended them as being sort of very very clean [2391.12] Curry: They are sort of no noise, which I really like but I can do without the hassle of having to [2395.84] Curry: Fight around trying to figure out what's going on with them and things that's a bit of a pain [2399.76] Stephen: Yeah, i'm going more for the open vtx stuff. Um, well, that's something else that's coming in as well [2404.16] Stephen: Well, we're talking of beta flight features. So there's [2406.96] Stephen: Instead of having to program your vtx table [2409.28] Stephen: There's a new feature coming in which is vtx over msp [2413.12] Stephen: And that's coming in with open vtx [2415.44] Stephen: Where that one of the guys who started express lrs actually he went jai [2419.68] Stephen: He went and created an open vtx project and the open vtx [2424.56] Stephen: Device is programmable over smart audio. So you could just flash new firmware to it [2429.28] Stephen: They've got a web-based app that does this [2431.92] Stephen: And and the latest feature they're introducing is the ability to run a half duplex serial link and communicate [2438.56] Stephen: Over msp with the vtx. So instead of programming the vtx table [2443.36] Stephen: You go hey vtx [2445.36] Stephen: What can you do? [2446.56] Stephen: And it comes back and sends you the vtx table and just configures it [2451.36] Curry: Right, so that would be much more sensible, wouldn't it saying? What are what are your capabilities? [2457.44] Curry: Will will have yeah [2459.44] Curry: Oh, that's the other thing. I was gonna ask you steven. Will they have the um [2465.04] Curry: Configurator over wi-fi [2467.68] Curry: via [2469.04] Stephen: Uh, oh, yeah, yeah, i've been using it and I completely forgot [2472.08] Stephen: Yeah, if you're on express lrs 3 [2474.08] Stephen: Then there's been a wi-fi overhaul and if you've seen one in the transmitters, I I set one up in a in a car [2481.12] Stephen: Got myself a wl toys car because it was orange and I like orange [2486.16] Stephen: And that lasted about two days predictably before I thought I don't know for express lrs in this. Um, yeah, I put [2492.48] Stephen: uh [2493.12] Stephen: A matec receiver in there which has vbat telemetry so I can get vbat back on my radio now for the car [2498.8] Stephen: Which is nice. Uh, and the web interface has been massively expanded with express lrs 3 [2504.8] Stephen: So you can choose what channel goes to what servo output pin and set the rates [2509.92] Stephen: Um and and with express lrs 3 as well when you you flick the receiver into wi-fi mode [2515.68] Stephen: Which is used for updating it. It also forwards the beta flight. Um [2520.8] Stephen: msp connection [2522.4] Stephen: So if you then open the latest nightly build of configurator, which is going to debut in 4.4 [2529.04] Stephen: If you have that on an android phone or on a tablet [2532.64] Stephen: uh or or on a [2534.32] Stephen: laptop even [2536.16] Stephen: That works on i've tested it on linux [2538.56] Stephen: I'm, pretty sure it works on windows and mac as well [2540.72] Stephen: It's going to auto detect that there's an express lrs wi-fi device. It uses bonjour or [2546.16] Stephen: um [2547.2] Stephen: Multicast dns mdns [2549.36] Stephen: To to see that there's another device on the network and it's got the capabilities to to offer this [2555.84] Stephen: Beta flight forwarding and it offers you to connect to it in the ports drop down [2560.32] Stephen: So much like when you plug in a serial port it automatically chooses the port if it sees a wi-fi device [2566.16] Stephen: It automatically chooses the wi-fi device. You can connect to it. You can do everything you normally would but you can't upgrade the firmware [2573.36] Stephen: You can't use the cli stuff and because the presets also use cli [2577.52] Stephen: It means presets can't be done, but you can do your pits. You can do your your [2581.76] Stephen: Um kind of transmitter setup modes [2585.1] Stephen: OSD configuration everything like that [2589.44] Curry: That's dead handy, I think that'd be useful because if there's something that [2593.44] Curry: um [2594.64] Curry: Sometimes messes up in the field for me. It's [2598.48] Curry: Uh, I forgotten to put this osd thing on and if you try and do it through the menus [2602.72] Curry: It's a massive pain and it just appears in a place [2605.44] Stephen: You can't move it and you've got to deal with it right in the middle of the screen for the rest of the session [2610.32] Curry: Exactly [2611.52] Curry: I think that's pretty neat [2613.36] Curry: Cool. Yeah before that [2615.12] Stephen: And uh, I was asking about whether it's going to come to the android app store [2619.12] Stephen: Some people were making noises about that. I should chase them up. Someone somewhere has keys [2624.48] Stephen: To the android app store for beta flight and much as it was published as a chrome app [2629.6] Stephen: Someone somewhere is able to get it onto the google play store. So I was gonna [2635.04] Stephen: I was trying to push people to do that because it's just much easier [2638.48] Stephen: If you've got an android device and you download some apk [2641.92] Stephen: The first assumption is hey the user's an idiot. This is a malicious program. Let's stop them from installing it [2648.96] Stephen: And if you're not sure whether you've downloaded it from the right place or not [2653.2] Stephen: Then the burden of security becomes a user thing. We don't really want that one [2659.36] Stephen: The the phone to be able to verify it's secure so it should really go on the app store [2664.0] Curry: Try and get that done as well. That aside also if it's on the app store [2666.64] Curry: You don't have to think about I wonder if there's an update for this [2669.6] Stephen: Yeah, you can have things like a beta program [2672.0] Stephen: So you could automatically get nightly builds if you want to move from 4.4 to whatever the 4.5 nightly is for example [2680.16] Stephen: I'm still i'm really interested with this [2682.88] Stephen: Online builds by the way, whether it's possible to do an f3 build [2687.52] Stephen: I haven't pushed it because I know it's stupid and we should just give up on f3, but I am [2693.12] Curry: I'm wondering what that's like suggesting to express lrs that they support s bus sport f3. That's yesterday's technology [2700.08] Curry: Don't be stupid. I want to use 72 megahertz of raw power [2705.84] Curry: Well, i've still got i've still got like a bunch of [2708.56] Curry: old quads and old little [2710.64] Curry: Early micro quads and that that that got f3 boards, which have never been upgraded like on like free one seven and stuff [2718.08] Curry: Talking of publishing on app stores [2719.6] Curry: Then is that is that ever going to be on the ios store and can you even connect? [2724.32] Stephen: You should be able to connect to you should notice this development. You can't [2728.08] Stephen: You can connect to wi-fi that might be a way around it [2730.48] Stephen: But you you can't connect to usb and like 90 percent of people are using usb [2735.84] Curry: You can't connect to usb, but you could connect to wi-fi and I think apple are also like very prescriptive about what you write your [2742.48] Stephen: apps in aren't they [2746.35] Curry: Yes at the moment [2749.15] Curry: Everything gets written in. Oh crust away. I've forgotten what it's called now [2754.99] Curry: It used to be in fact using and now it's [2759.71] Curry: No, they wouldn't let node run on it it's um, yeah [2763.47] Stephen: So i forgot what it is. It'd be a complete rewrite basically into whatever apple's flavor de jure is [2771.15] Curry: Yeah, I mean you can run a web app on there, but [2774.99] Curry: It won't let you [2776.59] Curry: run run a node [2778.43] Curry: Js thing. I don't think [2780.83] Stephen: Don't know it's tricky. I think the future is like pwa is basically [2785.87] Stephen: Which were kind of missold by microsoft for years progressive web apps [2790.19] Stephen: But microsoft as with everything it was like, you know [2793.55] Stephen: embrace extend extinguish [2795.79] Stephen: um [2796.51] Stephen: And they pretty much killed their own idea by suggesting that they knew how to do things [2800.67] Stephen: Better than everyone else and then patently doing a worse job of it than anyone else [2805.23] Stephen: So, um, they fell out of favor for a while, but it looks like there's a bit of resurgence now [2809.31] Stephen: So you look at edgy x and the edgy x buddy is just so much easier to use than companion for flashing stuff [2816.51] Stephen: So it's an absolute doddle [2820.88] Curry: Is the word I was missing by the way [2823.52] Stephen: Oh swift. Yeah. Yeah, but if you guys looked at the latest edgy x release as well [2829.92] Jack: No, no, no i'm still on open tx [2833.76] Jack: I am a complete scumbag [2836.4] Curry: I'm i've never updated edgy x i've had radios that have come with it and I was like, well, that's okay [2842.08] Curry: Oh, hang on. It looks exactly the same. I can't tell the difference [2845.04] Curry: Um, but i've never updated it [2847.36] Curry: So i've never i've never had to fight with any configurator or anything [2850.96] Stephen: If you run some chrome based browser, you know, like chrome or edge or whatever go to buddy.edgy x.org [2857.76] Stephen: And that's an updater. Um, so you can just plug your radio in in dfu mode [2862.48] Stephen: So typically most radios unless they're the beta fb light radio, which is effing stupid [2868.16] Stephen: Most of them just appear as a dfu device when you plug them in with that one [2871.2] Stephen: You have to hold a tiny reset button for reasons known only to be drift bv [2875.84] Stephen: But yeah, you can just go go flash stuff from a website now without having to download something so you can download something else [2884.4] Stephen: Nice which is kind of what companion was doing [2887.12] Stephen: Yeah, it's pretty cute [2889.2] Stephen: And the color radios do look really nice. They've got kind of proper [2894.0] Stephen: Spaced out ui so you can actually hit the targets for your finger [2897.6] Stephen: Because it was like homa with the homa with his fat fingers trying to dial the phone like your fingers are too fat [2903.36] Stephen: Please order a special dialing rod [2905.92] Curry: You can please match the keys if you're too fat [2909.6] Curry: So yeah warm [2912.56] Stephen: But yeah now that now they're all big and the scrolling smoother and stuff like that [2916.48] Stephen: So it's pretty nice if you've got touchscreen radio [2920.32] Jack: I think my year c is [2923.28] Stephen: updated [2925.12] Stephen: To the latest thing [2926.88] Stephen: I don't know. Well, I should also say it's pretty nice for wing pilots as well [2930.72] Stephen: Because I i've got like one model on all of my radios [2933.76] Stephen: Which is like the crsf output and it's just that's it the same mappings for every single quad [2939.6] Stephen: But if you've got like helis and wings and gliders and god knows what you would have apparently different things [2947.2] Stephen: You might even use some of the little [2949.2] Stephen: Slidy bits that they put on the radio so you can fidget with when you're flying. I don't know therefore [2954.56] Stephen: But yeah, if you've got all these different models previously [2957.44] Stephen: You'd have hundreds of entries where now you can put them into groups and organize them into nice hierarchical menus [2962.72] Stephen: So you've got like folders of planes and folders of helis and all that stuff [2967.6] Curry: Well, you would have had hundreds but open tx limited you to 60 and by which time you're out of memory anyway, so [2974.16] Curry: Then you have to start deleting stuff [2976.72] Stephen: Well, yeah, you're also now not out of memory because your models get shifted onto the sd card now. I think by default [2983.76] Curry: Well, that's quite handy [2985.44] Stephen: Yeah [2986.56] Curry: So you don't slide this by the way [2988.64] Curry: pan and tilt always useful [2992.48] Stephen: But i'd probably crash if I did that [2996.49] Curry: The difference with planes is you tend to be a bit higher up. So you're not doing that at six feet [3001.53] Curry: What's behind me crash? [3003.85] Curry: I was looking at planes [3006.17] Curry: Committing the cardinal sin. Are you doing with your little build? Is that still ongoing? [3010.89] Stephen: Uh, i've got all the bits and i'm basically to the point of chewing my fingernails a lot now [3016.41] Stephen: I'm my fc order got cancelled by aliexpress, which i'm really pissed about and it's making me reconsider [3024.33] Curry: I actually have an express order turn up for the first time with no problems [3029.21] Curry: These are rpsma solder connectors for my maple leaf antennas so I can go back out and [3035.93] Curry: Do more open hd stuff finally [3038.81] Jack: I'm waiting on a [3041.27] Jack: uh engineer crypto [3044.23] Jack: To make sh [3047.59] Stephen: That you would say to crimp an engineer [3050.95] Jack: Yeah [3052.15] Jack: really big players [3053.91] Jack: Yeah, because [3055.51] Jack: Yeah, none of my cables have got the right enough pens or in the right order or anything [3061.35] Jack: Yeah [3063.43] Stephen: That was the worst part about the gimbal conversion on the t-light I slapped in some of the [3069.03] Stephen: Zorro gimbals and trying to find someone who would flog me some jst [3074.37] Stephen: 1.25 apparently they're called pico blade and no one sells them [3080.23] Stephen: I couldn't even I could get an entire crimp kit for like thirty dollars, but I needed two cables [3085.43] Stephen: And I couldn't find them anywhere except with the horrible like [3089.81] Stephen: PVC wires which you just don't want if you're going to be soldering because it's just going to turn into a horrible sticky mess [3096.39] Stephen: Uh, especially as I had to strip off insulation in the middle of the wire [3100.23] Stephen: And then pass it through to something else [3103.03] Jack: Um, yeah, that was that was a fun build. That's right audio geek [3107.35] Jack: Yeah, so the I bought a set of crimpers that were like the automatic ones [3112.55] Jack: And trying to do the sh ones it does not work on that thing. It is complete garbage [3118.55] Jack: I just buy the pre-made ones. Yeah [3121.27] Curry: Reap in that I I find the whole idea of [3125.35] Curry: So many connectors like there's one billion connectors under the umbrella of jst [3131.11] Stephen: And that is ridiculous because people and it's not even an official category. It just means [3135.11] Curry: They often email me and say what's this connector called? I said it's a jst beyond that [3139.35] Curry: There's loads of other little things that go with it [3141.35] Stephen: Which tells you about connection measure it was probably featured in a radio that was made in japan in the 1970s [3148.49] Stephen: And thereafter became a semi-official member of this jst group [3153.05] Stephen: Which are no longer japanese and no longer made by any single company. It's just a mess [3159.29] Jack: I know it's awful [3161.61] Stephen: At least molex. There's some vague standards [3164.73] Curry: Yeah, things things need names proper names so you can just buy replacements [3169.77] Jack: audio geek there there is a company that um [3173.69] Jack: Um, yeah, like hobby rc sell [3177.45] Jack: Silicone already made ones, but it's only terminated on one end [3182.01] Jack: So you're screwed for the other end [3184.81] Jack: And they're all multi-color [3186.89] Stephen: He's doing gps. He's unlikely to have a terminal on the fc. Isn't he? It'd be just a [3192.01] Stephen: Plug on it. Yes. I don't know [3195.05] Curry: What I end up with is loads of joins [3197.21] Curry: You never cut the cable because that's got the connector on and then you just join it to different stuff [3202.65] Stephen: What you can do is just just shell out and buy the matek ones and not the knock-off [3208.07] Stephen: Baton gps because the matek ones actually ship with silicon wires and they're pretty good about it [3213.85] Stephen: Whereas the off-brand baton ones. Well, there may be some similar and other aspects shipped with trash cables [3221.45] Jack: Do you know the worst part is there's a there's a guy or someone guy or girl or? [3228.33] Jack: Maybe not maybe not even binary [3231.13] Jack: um [3232.81] Jack: The sells those connectors on ebay and I messaged them and I was like you san and broton [3239.77] Jack: Can I come pick them up and they were like no? [3242.81] Jack: so we got to place the order and then wait for all the postal strikes [3247.77] Jack: and then they show up a week later and i'm just like [3251.93] Jack: I literally just [3253.77] Stephen: If can't I just find the perspective of the seller would you want to meet you some great hulk? [3259.37] Stephen: Where's my connector? [3262.01] Jack: Oh, come off it. It's going to be [3264.25] Jack: Anyone who knows what a gst? [3267.75] Jack: 0.1 connector is [3271.05] Curry: Clearly a psychopath and shouldn't be trusted exactly like [3275.69] Jack: Just find a rock. Give me a geocache of [3279.29] Jack: Stuff it in there leave it in there and i'll dig it out of whatever hole it shoved in for all I care [3285.53] Stephen: So there's a whole new business. Oh, so do you get the listener who wanted an entirely solderless build? [3290.73] Stephen: I think this is coming back into focus now [3293.29] Stephen: Through the mists of time. Yeah [3296.89] Stephen: It can be possible with the right components it can be possible, but you need to solder the wires instead of the fc [3303.05] Stephen: ah [3304.17] Stephen: Spend all your time joining tiny wires together because you've got [3308.97] Stephen: Two sets of cables terminated on one end and you you can't find any that are terminated on two ends [3315.69] Curry: Keep finding the cables [3318.17] Stephen: Yeah, do you ever you'll end up doing the order dance on aliexpress and waiting a month for everything and then like six months later [3324.81] Jack: You might have a quad. Yeah, it's just like people [3328.25] Jack: Did you ever find yourself where people go? [3330.49] Jack: I don't know what this is and they ask you and then you know [3334.33] Jack: Off the top of your head and you just go. I wish I didn't know that [3339.53] Jack: Because I will never feel the warmth of another human being ever again [3345.85] Curry: These these days it's more like yeah, I do know what that is [3348.81] Curry: But now I can't remember the name because earlier onset dementia is set in once again [3353.53] Curry: I've forgotten [3354.97] Curry: Yeah, there you go [3357.05] Curry: Four hours from now. We'll randomly call you and and shout [3360.33] Curry: It's i've already forgotten the name of that program language swift. I shall it's swift down the phone and then put the phone down [3366.17] Stephen: That's pico blade [3368.73] Jack: Slap [3370.73] Jack: Jim ferry called me and asked me can you help him with some c programming? [3376.49] Jack: But that was a week ago [3378.33] Jack: And I I thought oh, do you know what? [3381.69] Jack: Yeah, I was like [3384.09] Jack: I don't know [3386.09] Jack: But feel free to call gaff if you if you do want to help him [3389.61] Stephen: Well, I believe the standard advice that is given to any aspiring c programmer is one [3395.37] Stephen: F**k off and to read kernigan and richie and if you go through all the forums [3400.49] Stephen: You'll see many helpful individuals who one tell you to f**k off and to tell you to read kernigan and richie [3406.65] Stephen: So that's probably what you want to do to just save some time in the transaction [3410.81] Stephen: Yeah, gav if you listen to this [3413.45] Curry: actually, no, I've got [3415.37] Curry: I I found this I was going to send this to you and it's [3419.45] Curry: a lovely picture [3421.45] Curry: of [3422.65] Curry: It's like a c programming joke, but it explained pointers in such beautiful detail [3428.89] Curry: So i'm gonna i'm gonna share this with you [3431.37] Stephen: And it was the other got me. I couldn't remember how struts work [3436.01] Curry: I can't even find the share screen thing now my share screen. Is it present now? Is it? [3440.97] Curry: Yes, I think it's gonna work. Yeah, that was changed. They've changed it [3444.57] Stephen: It's exactly the same place with the same icon curry. Come on. You can do it annoying do it [3449.93] Curry: There you go, there's my there's my c pointer joke which is if you know c it's a beautiful beautiful reference [3458.97] Curry: What is a point? [3460.97] Stephen: That's called insta star star [3463.53] Curry: Pointing to the the other end is in short for integer. Yes. Well done jack jack gets the gold star [3471.69] Curry: yeah [3474.25] Stephen: Star as a so it it [3476.25] Curry: It's a reference to a memory where an integer lives and then an insta star as a pointer to a pointer [3482.09] Curry: Well, I don't think there's a pointer to a pointer to a pointer because you've just become silly at that point [3486.25] Stephen: Because someone would just come out [3488.25] Stephen: Over covered with a knife and butcher you say stop doing that. Oh [3494.33] Curry: It's not often you get to make a lovely [3498.09] Curry: A lovely image representing c [3501.05] Jack: Do you know what anime that's from? [3504.65] Stephen: No, am I about c coding? [3506.81] Jack: No, no, it's not [3508.81] Jack: um [3509.69] Jack: And it's where you see me just spy in the anime [3513.85] Stephen: I wasn't part of me seriously was hoping that there was an anime somewhere about c coding given the [3521.21] Curry: Most things I don't see one [3526.25] Jack: Yeah death note with the i'm gonna eat a potato chip [3530.09] Jack: Yeah [3533.85] Curry: I thought it was okay because he already did all that thing for his arduino stuff [3538.73] Jack: Um [3540.25] Jack: I know I don't I don't know [3543.61] Stephen: Okay, oh I converted my tx16s to have a replaceable antenna and and I got furious in the process [3551.29] Stephen: It seemed on the face of it trivial [3554.25] Stephen: Order a replacement antenna kit which costs six quid [3557.93] Stephen: Open up the radio unplug the ufl [3562.89] Stephen: Unclip the antenna. Oh, yeah [3566.65] Stephen: Did you [3567.69] Stephen: Document this any photos or anything or no, I kind of I got too mad [3572.97] Stephen: I got too mad, but but it ended up with if anyone has probably got a tx16 somewhere [3579.29] Stephen: but the the standard antenna [3582.33] Stephen: Sticks out the case by quite a margin and the replacement antenna instead of sort of [3588.65] Stephen: Going flush with the case. It builds on the joint where the plug-in antenna went [3594.41] Stephen: And it just sort of shoves an adapter and an sma socket. That's a special extra long sma sockets an 18 mil sma [3602.49] Stephen: Which is like six mil longer than a standard sma and it was effing [3607.19] Stephen: Rpsma which I hate i'm on this quest to remove rpsma from all of my equipment [3612.73] Stephen: So I was damned if I was going to go and put the replacement replaceable antenna mount in [3618.65] Stephen: With an rpsma and then have to buy all new antennas [3622.73] Stephen: So so I took like the nuclear option and I got the dremel out and started cutting bits of my radio up [3629.37] Stephen: after [3630.73] Stephen: a couple of abortive attempts at 3d printing which I thought were going to work out beautifully, but [3635.77] Stephen: As with everything 3d printed if you put it on a quad [3638.65] Stephen: It's fine [3639.53] Stephen: If you try and put it next to a piece of perfectly molded plastic, it looks like a toddler's been out and about [3646.09] Stephen: Uh, so yeah that that attempt lasted not very long at all [3649.61] Stephen: And then I got there mount with the giant 18 mil adapter took that 18 mil adapter out and just kind of [3656.57] Stephen: Sanded it down [3657.93] Stephen: Dremel the top off in an ugly way and then repeatedly sanded it with wet and dry until I got [3662.65] Stephen: Down to like 1500 grit wet and dry [3665.69] Stephen: And it was like only one mil proud at the top of the radio [3668.73] Stephen: And then I could use the normal sma thing and I felt very happy and pleased with myself [3673.37] Jack: I I I don't want this to be publicly known, but I do have a supply of [3680.73] Jack: Um sma stuff to convert [3683.77] Jack: rpsma [3685.29] Jack: And whatnot. So well, so does next time not great secret talk to me. Yeah, I know but I can crimp [3692.25] Jack: I got all the crimp tools and everything [3694.97] Curry: I did notice this because um, I haven't got tx16, but I got [3698.73] Curry: the zorro and I noticed the zorro [3701.21] Curry: Antenna replacement kit was available [3703.77] Curry: and so I asked [3705.77] Curry: Radio master if uh, I could review one and they sent me the tx12 model 2 and forgot to put the replacement kit in [3712.25] Curry: But I did notice with the tx12, which has a [3714.81] Curry: Unscrewable antenna which you can replace that it is also rpsma and all my antennas. I want to test with our sma [3721.13] Curry: So I had to use an adapter [3722.97] Curry: Which is you know kills a bit of signal but better than nothing, but yes [3727.77] Curry: I don't I don't know why rpsma still exists in these places [3731.77] Stephen: It's not just me being stupid, but someone at radio radio master did a massive [3736.89] Stephen: Is um, I have the radio master case for my radio not the big foam one [3740.97] Stephen: But the one they shipped so you can actually take it places without shedding bits of packing foam [3744.97] Stephen: And and after installing their kit for their radio [3748.97] Stephen: The radio is now two centimeters too tall to fit in their case [3754.25] Stephen: The case which it does fit in perfectly is produced by [3759.21] Stephen: Their competitor jumper [3761.37] Stephen: Uh, so I now have a jumper case for the radio where it fits perfectly without hitting the top [3767.13] Stephen: Um, and it's a much nicer case. So [3769.93] Jack: Screw them [3770.97] Jack: Uh, funny story carrie, you know, you were talking about your little needle incident earlier on today. I had some [3778.49] Jack: needles to [3780.41] Jack: Dispose of so I went to my local pharmacy. I said i've got some needles [3785.45] Jack: and [3786.57] Jack: They were like we don't have a needle exchange program and they refused me [3790.41] Jack: And I was like, I just want to get rid of them [3792.57] Jack: So they sent me to the other chemists who they don't know me [3796.73] Jack: And obviously I have I have a few few of these that I used with soldering [3801.77] Jack: That I finished with and I go in there and then they see that and they're like we've only got the two mill needles [3807.69] Jack: Is that all right thinking i'm like a full 10 cc [3811.67] Jack: heroin junkie [3816.09] Curry: Probably needs a lot of junk [3818.73] Curry: Just keep refilling it or can I have five of them at once can't get enough scag in the regular needle [3824.01] Jack: Yeah, I know. So yeah, like apparently I my hair is crazy enough [3829.85] Jack: Um that I look like a crackhead now [3832.73] Jack: So that's surely i'm way too fat to be a smackhead, but you know, yeah, you'd you'd clearly be doing something wrong [3840.81] Stephen: Yeah, so [3842.81] Stephen: Surprised they didn't take you aside and say excuse me. We think you may be using these wrong. I don't like [3848.65] Jack: me [3850.97] Jack: Um, right that well on that note, um [3855.53] Jack: If you if you have enjoyed us and you want to support the show [3860.49] Jack: We have got patreon and we really appreciate it because it helps [3864.57] Jack: Cut the effing and jeffing out and cleans everything up for our audio listeners. Um, you've been joined by everyone's favorite curry kitchen [3873.29] Curry: But I I can't get my arms up ahead. The needle is involved both arms and they're now very sore. Bye. Bye. Okay [3880.01] Jack: everyone's favorite mustache steven [3883.13] Jack: Cheers. Thank you. Goodbye. Good night [3885.13] UNKNOWN: And I broke till I fly and i'm a crackhead apparently, thank you. Good night telemetry last
