[0.0] Jack: Hello, and you're listening to what drone out and special thank you to our lovely patrons that help donate so that we can pay the editor to remove the swear words and silly things we say massive thank you to Carlos campos.
[17.7] Frank: Sam Darma on with the show.
[51.49] Stephen: Hello hello and welcome to let's turn out.
[56.81] Jack: Tonight we are doing by no one's favorite Steven.
[64.25] Jack: Hello it's me again sorry how are you doing yeah and everyone's worst nightmare me brighten to the fly.
[73.81] Jack: Let's go hey Dominic Clifton hey Caroline Taylor hey Lergie John hate to chat tailspin hello Clive FBV Richard Warwick and low buddy audio geek.
[86.45] Stephen: Hey how you doing RC do you legend everyone thanks for tuning in we were just bemoaning the frailties of PCBs and the exhaustion that comes from banging your head against something well you just want it to do the thing it was doing before and it won't do you know what do you know what I should do that will make me feel better.
[116.45] Jack: Like does it does anyone need any does anyone need a like a 28 or anything or whatever I suppose you're gonna smash it to pieces on you know I was thinking about getting the stick blender out and just by lending it will it blend sounds like the 28 could put cuz you've lifted pads off that right that's gonna know the no that's fine it's the ESP 32 that that's.
[145.45] Jack: Oh that is you know I think a goner.
[151.77] Stephen: It's annoying it's hella annoying I was saying I was trying to flash an ESC and just can't get the bootloader to work.
[158.89] Stephen: The moaning the kind of death by a thousand cuts that we're getting from this cuz it's just hard to keep the energy levels up when you screaming electronics as I'm sure I'm squash it in a vice says the professional here Dominic Clifton yeah I know he should know I'm sure he's had a few.
[175.73] Stephen: Annoying PCBs in his time.
[178.65] Stephen: Super satisfying and a slow process so you can enjoy it more or.
[186.89] Jack: Get the most out of it it was working and then the OLED stopped working when I did another day and then I've been trying to get the OLED to work.
[197.33] Jack: And then be flashing it back and forth and then I decided to like redo all my soldier joints cuz of course that's gonna be the issue and then yeah just couldn't get the can get the the grounds to disconnect and then.
[217.37] Jack: Now it just doesn't work at all yeah it's just it's just vandalism.
[224.17] Stephen: I was I was dead happy to be able to use DIY modules and to be able to give people some money when this express LRS stuff started up cuz you know people have come up with these board schematics and it felt only right to like somehow pay them for it so it was nice to be able to buy stuff off makers and do the DIY thing but.
[243.29] Stephen: It's kind of frustrating when you when you get to the point and you know you can get a good external module pre made for not much sat there with a soldering iron because something isn't quite 100% you've got a dry joint and you're not sure which one it is it's it's a bit much.
[258.81] Jack: Yeah.
[260.65] Jack: It's yeah check for shorts between pins yeah that is fine I've I've had a look got like magnifier got linen testers.
[270.73] Jack: Just when we're big old pins and yes like she's vandalism and to be honest man it's like it is cheap gear like the old the old power to like barely barely holding on in there.
[289.53] Jack: But yeah it's just like he's not wrong very satisfying maybe we should do it when Davis says use a welding torch get medieval on it.
[300.01] Jack: Look for sport sort of spashes and solder balls yeah true yeah just so stuff just don't know it don't it doesn't even flash and then I tried like making like doing some jumpers for you know maybe it was a grounding issue and then I plugged it in and then blew the you know the temporary visas in my motherboard so now my my USB didn't work.
[330.33] Stephen: Something is definitely shorted but it might just be past the time when you're to say like I've spent x number of hours and I'm not like in an indentured labor being charged out at 10 p an hour I just got to admit that I could have bought another one with the time I've been working on it.
[350.81] Jack: I know yeah totally it's total like pointlessness you know like and now I wouldn't trust it if never give up no stop telling me stuff like this never give up it's not healthy just get the right tools to fix it yeah just.
[370.71] Stephen: I've got some builds I feel are just cursed like flat out cursed I had a three and a half inch that's now flying okay but that that build must have taken me five months because I just got.
[382.39] Stephen: One dodgy AIO and then I tried to make a naked vista and I buggered up the little mippy connector trying to clean it up I think I've been some of the pins and.
[394.31] Stephen: No.
[396.47] Stephen: Two of the movies are unserviceable like once it's trashed you can't can't do anything with mippy will be the MCX connector malarkey.
[406.87] Stephen: No mippy's so the.
[409.91] Stephen: That kind of like a ziff connector for cables.
[415.83] Stephen: Okay, but the you know that there's the latching ones where you've got the little lever and you push down and clamps the end of ribbon cable the mippy's have like a very slight click connect and they use them for the DJI cables and.
[430.47] Stephen: No yeah don't use them for like JTAC all over yeah if you open up a laptop you'll see them all over the inside of a laptop connecting your light SATA ports and all that stuff they're everywhere but that they're really not designed to be.
[446.19] Stephen: Serviced and changed by end users and you get a couple of insertions and if you go a bit not even hulk on it but you just have a look at it wrong and put one ends in first at the wrong angle and you can bend one of the little pins.
[461.19] Stephen: Inside so it comes up out the plastic when you've done that unless you are like some kind of surgeon with a pair of tweezers that thing is just dead and you can't easily remove the mippy connector from the board unless you're.
[473.59] Jack: Very skillful so it's kind of annoying that happened up on DJI and it was just a bummer that's like 90 quid it's good yeah Dom send me that he he was just showing now there we go he goes yeah Dave on EV blog got a 50 volt on probes and just shorted out all the components individually to let all the magic smoke out send me that video because I probably need that.
[504.07] Jack: When you absolutely positively want to kill every in the room yeah just the breathing in the flocks as well it's like I've been getting angrier and more poisoned as you go yeah yeah and it's just like.
[524.27] Jack: You know I spent the whole day trying to do work at work and then go to toilet million times and then on my free time i'm trying to get this piece of working and then today on my day off it's like boom flu job and then i've just got a headache and just like.
[542.75] Stephen: Just all day and like I get a message from what we like hey we you know if we change your job title I was like thanks just slept through that oh yeah apparently Dom says microscopes make you superhuman if you've got like hands of steel that don't twitch or vibrate i'm not quite up there with Andy I'll see but I do not have steady hands but yeah I appreciate the thought Dom.
[568.27] Jack: Yeah it might have been Lewis Rossman I know like don't don't get me wrong like you know microscope binocular well try not killer you know one for the the video cam and stuff is tempting but you're looking at three to four hundred quid like you know before and that that was the before times.
[591.15] Jack: They did they did make cheap microscopes that were like USB webcams with a big lens yeah yeah yeah I thought about that but you know when you're doing like you know the sort of like I suppose you could buy.
[605.79] Jack: A silicone mat but when you're like cooking things with like you know a reflow higher.
[614.43] Jack: Yeah yeah that's sort of like plastic email in us kind of full on.
[621.63] Stephen: I'll speak to him which I visited a cool little site today a bunch of people who are doing automated lighting solutions and they're making their own PCBs and there's some kind of midi control with with IR and lasers and they have the little reflow oven with the Arduino and OLED on top of a basic sort of domestic oven.
[643.79] Stephen: And a little laser cutter and everything some interesting cool stuff going on there they're making a lot of stuff with ESP32s there as well for lighting control and might try to interface stuff for these old DMX solutions and all that.
[656.83] Jack: Yeah the yeah the yeah the reducer I can't remember what they're called they're called something else to put it reduces the focal so that you can move it further up.
[669.95] Jack: I know I know my tech Ian got all the scopes.
[676.19] Stephen: I reckon he must have been there when they cleared out a lab the amount of stuff he's got.
[680.67] Stephen: Yeah I know yeah you need to see I was going to say you see Ian's review of the DJI V3 air unit with the.
[690.51] Stephen: Nope.
[691.31] Stephen: Compact cooling solution it's worth a check out that's one that's on our news channel I believe.
[698.35] Stephen: No pop that in there.
[700.59] Jack: Yeah yeah do you want to send me a link man we'll have a look at it and I'm a bit left out in the cold for all.
[709.15] Jack: I'll see if I can find it.
[713.47] Jack: Jump I've firing up the old discord.
[718.11] Jack: Yeah don't get the USB Microsoft sold in any work for inspection not rework.
[724.19] Jack: Yeah I would I would like to get one but oh man it's just like another thing bolted to my desk.
[730.83] Jack: But super tempting.
[735.33] Jack: Is super tempting.
[739.33] Jack: Oh does does anyone is anyone sub to.
[745.57] Jack: You know I've been I've been looking for.
[749.09] Jack: But all the Lewis scripts and everything.
[751.01] Jack: And just can't.
[754.05] Stephen: So I'm going to share this Mads fair use.
[757.49] Stephen: I know we we grouched at you but I do generally think of what you did who was hilarious so.
[763.81] Stephen: Let's just share this this he's got a little preview of the new DJI air unit here.
[771.73] Stephen: So you can see he's he's looked he's got the mock up of the air unit and he's going to put the.
[776.69] Stephen: Compact cooling solution on top there.
[779.65] Stephen: Nice nice.
[781.57] Stephen: Yeah no problem so far.
[784.13] Jack: No I mean that that does work.
[788.45] Stephen: Yeah you get nice cinematic footage with that.
[791.97] Stephen: It's funny.
[793.49] Jack: Barely moving AMD on it.
[797.17] Jack: Yeah it's unusual.
[799.17] Jack: Yeah.
[799.57] Jack: Yeah as well.
[803.01] Jack: Like yeah we do not have enough RGB fans on.
[807.25] Stephen: Quad it makes the point that it's compact and appreciably smaller than the previous
[811.33] Stephen: unit which is you know a powerful combination.
[815.09] Stephen: No that is quite funny.
[817.65] Stephen: Yeah nice one Ian.
[821.33] Stephen: Well done sir.
[822.45] Stephen: Well done.
[823.65] Stephen: Well played.
[825.49] Stephen: Indeed some other bits and bobs.
[831.17] Stephen: There's been a new release from.
[834.77] Stephen: Our old friend's fat shark who've popped out a new.
[841.01] Stephen: Bargain solution.
[843.25] Stephen: Interestingly just after that VRX dropped boom.
[848.94] Stephen: All the recon yeah.
[852.46] Stephen: So this is just the their bargain goggle as you used to have except this time with your walk snail
[858.94] Stephen: business and probably the first time I've actually seen them they mention walk snail
[865.82] Stephen: because they don't really talk about walk snail a lot in their marketing where they're calling
[868.7] Stephen: out works they're now saying that they're you know walk snail air units and things with them.
[875.26] Stephen: Big old box goggles though.
[877.02] Stephen: 280 bucks though 280 US US dollars so probably 280 pounds here exchange rate be damned.
[884.78] Stephen: Um but an interesting sort of price point for goggles when you've got the.
[892.14] Stephen: HD zero goggles coming out at about 600 so 280 is that is genuinely a bargain way to get
[899.98] Stephen: into digital FBV.
[902.14] Stephen: Yeah by that.
[904.14] Jack: What's the battery solution on the back of that.
[907.58] Stephen: Oh there's a big old just like you see a big old DC plug there so I'm guessing you just
[913.58] Stephen: jammed. Do they have well does anyone have the original recon goggles. I've never owned
[917.74] Stephen: a pair of fat sharks I've always gone with Skyzones and other brands.
[922.7] Jack: No no magnetic tip self temperature regulating regulating soldering iron.
[931.26] Jack: Nice three best stop it stop trying to corrupt me dominant Clifton.
[941.89] Stephen: Magnetic tip soldering iron. How does it stay magnetized when it's really hot.
[946.21] Stephen: I thought things demagnetize when they get hot. I can only assume it's magic.
[951.81] Jack: How do they work with the I know it said it works with the Avada was I right in reading that.
[958.77] Jack: But you were Avada DJI and didn't they have a big massive falling out.
[964.29] Stephen: No no this was so Avada is DJI but the walk snail guys decided to take the piss
[972.45] Stephen: quite frankly and call their system avatar instead of Avada and they claimed it was due
[978.37] Stephen: to the re-release of is it Michael Cameron's avatar movie. It's clearly just a stunt to
[984.77] Stephen: wind people up but yeah. So that's the name of the system is avatar by walk snail.
[993.25] Stephen: Walk snail is just the company and avatar is the system.
[997.33] Jack: Electromagnetism electricity doesn't flow when the magnet gets hot.
[1005.65] Jack: All right magnet magnet conductively makes very strange.
[1012.77] Stephen: Yeah they are compatible with walk snail John. So that's that's the plan there.
[1019.01] Stephen: But you're buying a two hundred and eighty dollar pair of goggles
[1022.77] Stephen: and every time you buy a VTX that's like a hundred and twenty or a hundred and forty dollars.
[1028.05] Stephen: So the VTXs are still eye-wateringly expensive. Oh there's this from Bruce as well.
[1036.93] Stephen: Bruce has finally snapped it seems. Thank you. He's not happy. He's not happy that
[1046.85] Stephen: the modeling, America's Modeling Club AMA is trying to work with the FAA. He's convinced
[1056.05] Stephen: it's all just some big bribery factory like football and everything's going down the toilet
[1061.97] Stephen: and this is the beginning of the end and he spent a long time kind of hammering this point home
[1068.85] Stephen: in a video. It's interesting to watch because he's very annoyed at it but they are doing what
[1075.89] Stephen: they said they were going to do. So I'm not sure what more people could have asked really.
[1083.74] Stephen: The point that's being made there I guess by Bruce and others is AMA and BMA are gray-haired
[1090.14] Stephen: institutions and they're graying out as Bruce puts it right so that the members are not going any
[1096.46] Stephen: younger and following these rules they're now flying well outside of the recreational parks
[1104.46] Stephen: and more social venues where they may be used to fly little foamy's or you might have taken your
[1109.34] Stephen: little toothpick or a whoop and just messed around in the park because you're not going to hurt anyone
[1115.42] Stephen: and you've got some kids interested and they might have gone and bought models or built some
[1119.5] Stephen: of their own models and it kind of perpetuated the hobby but now you've got people who are going to
[1125.74] Stephen: be moved out into distant fields where they can't be near anyone and no one's going to see them
[1131.42] Stephen: flying and so you're not going to get new members so the members are just going to you know who
[1137.66] Stephen: basically are five or ten years north of retirement they're just going to die and then the hobby is
[1144.62] Stephen: going to be left with very few people in it because there's no way of attracting new members which is
[1152.22] Stephen: kind of a problem. It stops it being sociable. I don't know what your thoughts are on that.
[1158.38] Jack: Oh man I yeah well we've got it we've got it in this country haven't we countrymen members or
[1168.69] Jack: whatever where you can just fly in your own with um am I right is it the same thing
[1176.13] Jack: I don't want to be talking about stuff I don't fully you know haven't fully looked into it.
[1182.29] Jack: I'm not sure what you're talking about.
[1183.73] Jack: Um the BMFA you can still be a member but not in a club as a countryman.
[1192.13] Stephen: Oh right journeyman sort of like on your own.
[1196.37] Jack: Yeah and meanwhile like for instance the Brighton BMFA uh there's you know they they don't want
[1205.25] Jack: drones they're not interested and um you can only fly helis on a sunday before 11 a.m.
[1215.89] Jack: So I don't know from 12 excuse me to 11 yeah something like that it's very strange so like
[1223.25] Jack: hang on let's let's have a look but I you know yeah it's like he kind of
[1231.17] Jack: he's kind of got a point but you know there's other weird like you know like um flight test
[1240.05] Jack: some of their new phone models you can't get the plans to build the new
[1249.01] Jack: the new kits and you've got to become a membership with them as well.
[1254.05] Stephen: Dominic is suggesting you get into the schools every show and tell every open day every parents
[1260.05] Stephen: evening you want to be there with your freestyle quad or parents evening right until they admit
[1265.33] Stephen: that it's a good idea. I mean yeah it's easy to kind of be flippant about this but there's
[1271.97] Stephen: there's a point where people don't know about this cool stuff unless they see it and it's um
[1277.73] Stephen: you know it's easy to take a little tiny whoop in and these days you can even get
[1281.89] Stephen: digital ones right so you could have like a nice HDMI monitor a beautiful video signal and just
[1286.69] Stephen: kind of whiz around fly under table legs loop a few bits and bobs and you know have a whale of
[1293.81] Stephen: a time and I'm sure you draw a crowd and you might end up with a bunch of people who want to
[1297.89] Stephen: join you and race their own. There are a lot of ready to fly kits for tiny whoops and stuff these
[1304.05] Jack: days. Helicopter flying has only got priority before 10 p 10 a.m each day. Why do you have
[1312.85] Jack: helicopters for helicopter flying? Yeah helicopters are fixed-wing aircraft do not fly together
[1319.49] Jack: helicopter flying is limited and they're just like you know. Why can't you fly helis and fixed-wing
[1329.17] Stephen: at the same time? I really don't understand this. I mean anyone can fly with these fixed-wing
[1335.89] Stephen: pilots because all they do is take off and do circles at 100 feet around the edge of the field
[1342.13] Stephen: as far as I could see I was chasing a few of them and they'll yeah just they don't go anywhere near
[1346.77] Stephen: the deck and they just go around in circles so it's quite easy to fly a quad with them. The guys
[1352.85] Stephen: that I spoke to were very open and happy for me to fly and kind of a bit curious about what I was
[1358.29] Stephen: doing but it's really easy to stay out of the way of fixed-wing stuff like they're not going to fly
[1364.61] Stephen: into you and you've got all the maneuverability if there's someone in front of you to absolutely stay
[1370.05] Stephen: out that way it's not challenging they're massive and they're quite slow and predictable they don't
[1375.65] Jack: suddenly jump to the side or up and down. Oh god helicopter safety you've got to download
[1385.04] Stephen: but I just let's let's look at helicopter safety then what do you really want to
[1391.36] Stephen: like I'm honestly curious to see if there's a multi rotor section in helicopter there isn't
[1396.16] Jack: there isn't like permit to fly fixed-wing learn to fly info for new members I'm just wondering
[1404.96] Jack: whether they say like we're primarily a fixed-wing club however we've passed a few fixed-wing permits
[1413.76] Jack: to fly proficiency tests and are permitted to fly helicopters unfortunately we're unable to fly
[1421.6] Jack: provide helicopter instruction slash tuition. This is the thing as well there's so many ready
[1427.44] Stephen: to fly kits these days people aren't building their own helis and fixed wings they're more likely just
[1433.2] Stephen: to grab a kit comes with a cheap radio might even come with a cheap set of goggles
[1439.2] Stephen: that makes the point maybe the fixed-wing guys can't tell where the the quads going to go
[1446.91] Jack: yeah as far as I know they're just like yeah no no quads as far as I know
[1454.67] Jack: don't welcome it PV and then you gotta have a spotter as well fly the other people in the
[1461.95] Stephen: club are your spotter right if there's anyone else flying at the field they're your spotter right
[1466.75] Stephen: yeah it's why I'm leaving my club oh geez I know I've never got around to joining a club I've
[1476.18] Stephen: I talked to some they're nice people but I just didn't feel like it wasn't the type of flying
[1481.7] Stephen: that I was enjoying I wanted to be tearing around at the height of the bushes and trees
[1487.78] Stephen: and going really fast and I just got some kind of odd looks and I could tell people were not
[1493.54] Stephen: entirely happy with that style of flying so it just felt I don't know and there's also a rule
[1501.02] Stephen: if you're flying FPV I can't bring anyone to act as spotter for me I can't bring a guest in
[1508.22] Stephen: but I can't fly on my own either so I'd have to synchronize and make sure I'm flying when there
[1513.02] Stephen: was another pilot there so I couldn't just knit down the field and have a fly which I couldn't do
[1517.9] Stephen: if I was flying fixed wing right it's been constructive yeah so then what do you do like
[1524.38] Jack: to play by the rules just stand there and fly an FPV quad liners right until someone else turns up
[1532.3] Stephen: and then you can put your goggles on yeah it's challenging I know I don't if I'm part of a club
[1543.49] Stephen: I'd want to stick by the club's rules and show them some respect but equally so they don't make
[1548.69] Stephen: it easy to do that I don't want to join a club and then just be that guy who ignores all the rules
[1553.17] Jack: but yeah what you're gonna do it's like yeah I think uh I yeah I mean I we've we've got a
[1565.97] Jack: friend who uh got disciplined for hand launching and catching a uh little mini foamy fixed wing
[1575.09] Jack: so I was just like oh geez I need to get a drink I don't know whether you can fluff for a sec
[1581.57] Jack: I've completely forgot to bring bring a drink no worries I'll see if I can waffle can you
[1588.21] Jack: could you tell me like the rabbit hole you went down for flashing the ESCs do you wish
[1594.77] Jack: that you never bothered is it a painful thing oh are you all right okay I've got such a rabbit
[1603.09] Stephen: hole for this so I started out with an st link and I started flashing stuff with an st link and then
[1607.49] Stephen: it looks like the configuration for the st doesn't match the firmware I flashed so specifically the
[1613.09] Stephen: bootloader isn't working so the bootloader is expecting to work off some other pin or something
[1617.41] Stephen: I honestly don't know and then I decided to not connect it to a flight controller but I wanted
[1625.65] Stephen: to configure it so I had to set up larduino and so I've just got all these wires hanging off this
[1630.13] Stephen: tiny little ESC and it's um to be honest I'm not sure if I could be bothered anymore
[1635.57] Stephen: it was an interesting idea I thought yep I'm gonna I'm gonna have am32 and I'm gonna put it
[1640.61] Stephen: in a tiny little 2s car with a little pwm rx it's gonna be a nice neat little solution it'll
[1647.25] Stephen: be hilarious and when I plug in the car paragon it's gonna play a tune and it'll be cute and funny
[1653.25] Stephen: oh my word no I've now bought an at link I don't know why I bought an at link I thought maybe I'd
[1659.81] Stephen: flash some artery tech ESCs because though they moved all of those cheap ESCs by iFlight and other
[1666.37] Stephen: people hackrc they all those kind of people who are rebranding other ESCs they all moved from stm32
[1674.13] Stephen: onto 8032 and that's now impossible to flash because you can't use your st link to flash it
[1683.65] Stephen: you've got to get an at link and the software is a bit like back to windows 95 it's all a bit
[1689.41] Stephen: challenging it's all a bit tiring and I'm kind of in a low energy mood now after all this because
[1695.97] Stephen: there's just a few things I've touched in a row that didn't work and then we see the whole 80
[1700.61] Stephen: beta flight thing and it's just oh oh dear it's just exhausting um so there's skyo 4x
[1708.45] Jack: that did work you don't recommend flashing this
[1713.65] Stephen: which one have you got the oh yeah those those are good and I know the guy who um
[1720.13] Stephen: works at sky stars he's been very helpful um I think he's actually on the am32 groups he's
[1726.21] Stephen: very helpful kind of guide you through it so yeah those those fairly easy to flash what I was doing
[1731.81] Stephen: was flashing some completely different mcu the one you've got there it should be uh an stm32
[1738.85] Stephen: f051 I think 051 which is just easy any stm32 stuff is very easy to flash but that the
[1749.25] Stephen: artery tech sort of clone mcu's um
[1755.57] Stephen: just tiring I'm trying to get the other one with the unknown bootloader to work that was an stm32
[1761.41] Stephen: but it was from flycolor and I have no idea what bootloader to use so it's just it was too much
[1771.33] Stephen: but I put a backpack in my goggles and I bought a new um not a totally new module but you can like
[1777.17] Stephen: get the the smart bit on the module for these it attaches and you get a new one for 30 bucks 30 us
[1784.53] Stephen: and plug it in and then you just have a backpack on there without needing to solder it and it
[1789.49] Stephen: upgrades the steady view thing as well you know that the rapid fire fusion copy that they have
[1795.09] Stephen: so it works out some bugs with that as well so it's kind of a two-for-one no no that works pretty
[1800.05] Jack: well yeah yeah yeah he's he's giving the way of you know like you know needing a backpack
[1809.73] Jack: because you know like you know running ghost I'm like I'm letting the scripts for my kiss stuff
[1817.65] Jack: I'm like and now you've got diversity receivers I'm like looking more and more tempting and I'm
[1828.93] Jack: worried about like you know how long ghost is gonna carry on for because there's just no receivers
[1835.89] Stephen: and he's now gone with orca well I thought ghost was part of the pre-packaged kind of ecosystem
[1846.29] Stephen: that they were trying to build at orca so they've got yeah all the immersion rc plus the goat plus
[1853.09] Stephen: the orca stuff it kind of creates this ready to fly package with everything right yeah yeah we
[1859.97] Jack: were talking about that with the orca uh usb bluetooth um like you know gamepad yeah they've
[1873.33] Stephen: got a jr bay with uh with bluetooth then right which looked like a bit of a reach to me because
[1879.09] Stephen: it's 30 quid and my happy model express lrs module costs less than that and happens to include
[1885.65] Jack: bluetooth yeah don't worry you can flash the lrs onto ghost hardware yeah is they're not keen on
[1894.77] Stephen: supporting it going forward though because it's just kind of a bit of a pain in the butt to work
[1898.93] Stephen: with it doesn't have its own wi-fi and stuff and obviously more architectures equals more pain when
[1903.73] Jack: you've got to test new kit no it's j2o it's not kabucha don't worry oh yeah I forgot it doesn't
[1911.81] Jack: have a uh doesn't have a internet module wifi module yeah yeah it's easy to forget how annoying
[1919.57] Stephen: it is to to not have that it's it's kind of surreal these days when it's like upgrade express lrs
[1925.25] Stephen: and you just power everything on and then just leave it and then it pops up oh man five or six
[1933.89] Stephen: devices just jump into your home network and say upgrade me yeah i'll leave it on ghost i might
[1942.21] Jack: just stop using ghost for a bit and then just continue using the crossfire lua scripts and
[1948.61] Jack: that so i can do you know i can tune in i mean i think that's a perfectly good product it's just
[1957.89] Stephen: if you can't buy the receivers that that is always a bit of a pain
[1962.13] Stephen: it was crossfire a few years ago right where you couldn't get any of the receivers and
[1966.53] Stephen: everyone was stuck when in the next batch arriving i guess express the rest just gives
[1971.01] Jack: you much more options when that happens yep and here you go so i remember asking um fed off
[1981.57] Jack: and he was like i gave the ghost code like months ago to the master effect deck that will be public
[1989.33] Jack: easy peasy i cool can't seem to find it but that was like the third of may 21 and it's like
[1997.73] Jack: you google you you go to the um the the you go to the kiss um for the liver it's just not there
[2008.13] Jack: i'm like challenging i know i just i don't know i don't i don't know whether i'm dumb or what
[2015.49] Frank: this episode was recorded in front of a live online audience downloaded and edited to make
[2020.05] Frank: sense when it played audio only sensors to please the itunes people hosted on the internet forwarded
[2025.49] Frank: through to your podcast provider downloaded playing on your device and is now playing in your
[2030.05] Frank: ears all thanks to our patreons consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits
[2036.21] Frank: find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out so john's asking me what what do i fly
[2043.33] Stephen: and i can go and that just out of shot here it is a big stack of everything that i fly the first
[2049.09] Stephen: time i went to a flying club was with a two and a half inch mic pro analog fpv obviously um so not
[2057.57] Stephen: just five inches i've got like three five inches and seven inch those the big stuff and i've got
[2067.73] Stephen: everything else is four inch or under three four inches probably
[2074.29] Stephen: five three inches and two and a half inch many many so yeah lots of micros because around here
[2084.61] Stephen: in the center of london can't can't go balls to the wall with a six s five inch much less the seven
[2090.93] Stephen: inch i mean they're a lot of fun to fly you know send that thing to the moon cut the throttle
[2095.41] Stephen: what you got like a cannonball wonderful fun you can't do that in the middle of the city you just
[2101.81] Stephen: the noise to start with let alone the risk if anything happens so yeah my first serious
[2108.05] Stephen: quad was the uh aurora rc qav 105 so it's modeled after the big qav s but it's a qav 105 mill
[2122.77] Stephen: with i think 2.3 inch props maybe 2.4 yeah with a tiny little um
[2131.89] Stephen: antenna hot glued in the back they still got fr sky with the giant bunny ears
[2136.69] Stephen: that's got to be upgraded so that was the the first non-woop thing that i tried flying
[2144.05] Stephen: but these days this is kind of my my go-to park flyer uh aos 3.5 v2 1505 motors
[2153.09] Stephen: cad x nebula orange oh three and a half inch gym fan 3520 digital got express lrs on it of
[2165.73] Stephen: um an h 743 aio and it takes a 750 mar 4s and keeps it under 250 with the whole setup
[2175.57] Jack: all set up comfortably you just do whatever you want oh man it's so tempting so tempting
[2185.09] Jack: but you know i've kissed scumbag so i'm gonna have to sit there and like
[2189.89] Jack: you know try and buy a you know a kiss ultra mini right yeah so uh domnek's probably gonna
[2201.09] Stephen: laugh at me but yeah that's uh j h e m c u h 743 not one of your fine boards i'm afraid to say
[2207.65] Stephen: um i needed an aio and i wanted an aio with a 10 volt beck um which i think i've actually
[2214.85] Stephen: petitioned you for in the past but it definitely needs to do with your time i'm sure um and and
[2221.09] Stephen: it performed really well with the exception that i had to write the beta flight unified target for
[2226.05] Stephen: the board because it arrived with an i flight target on it with a bunch of resource remappings
[2232.29] Jack: which wasn't ideal so yeah a bit of a mess how was your venture into fix wing
[2241.49] Stephen: because have you ordered stuff down there and i'm exhausted i'm building it it's in a box i just
[2249.49] Jack: i want to work on a project that doesn't matter and i actually do it and it's successful and it
[2254.45] Jack: just works and then i don't break it and then i've got flying fish atomasi flying fish which is a
[2261.17] Stephen: 400 mil dinky little fixed wing
[2266.61] Stephen: picture for anyone that's interested a little twin engine simple very simple towards the end
[2273.49] Jack: of the show i will plug this in and see whether my camera and everything will go blank you'll have
[2279.89] Stephen: to end the show if that does that's why i've got usb hubs because i've had stuff get really hot
[2286.61] Stephen: and um whoops are the worst because a lot of whoops they power the vtx off usb whether you
[2291.81] Stephen: want them to or not so you just plug it in and you're like why is this why is this so hot after
[2296.93] Stephen: i flashed it what's going on i've got the battery plugged in and then you'll get your goggles on
[2302.29] Stephen: you're like the vtx is on what's the how why and they're just yeah all the five fault pads alive
[2310.13] Stephen: there's no concept of like four volt five it's just all live so your vtx powers on the instant
[2315.97] Stephen: you put usb into it no the tiny hawk too i don't know whether where am i gonna fly it well i'm not
[2323.49] Stephen: sure that that is the thing um it looks really slow so i'm gonna fly it hopefully around my
[2330.61] Stephen: little park and do a few circles um and just go at snail speed i'm gonna try and keep it as light
[2337.97] Stephen: as possible it's got two 1105 motors right and i fly like this quad this is a quad with 1105 motors
[2345.89] Stephen: right and i can fly that on a 3s 450 and that's got four motors and admittedly i'm not running
[2353.01] Stephen: them at full chat all the time like you might on a plane but i think i can probably get away with
[2358.37] Stephen: a nice light battery and by using a light battery obviously doesn't stall as easily um so i can slow
[2366.29] Stephen: it down and it should just i'm hoping that i can lighten it up and then be able to fly in a smaller
[2373.09] Stephen: space by not needing to go berserk and i i don't mind flying for four minutes at a time it's not
[2379.65] Stephen: no skin off my nose i'm a quad pilot it's fine not a problem yeah oh man he's tempting to like
[2390.05] Jack: go down the tiny things but i'm just i'm kind of just waiting for you know to move into digital
[2398.85] Jack: because there is there is there's no analog stuff anymore is there it's getting rare yeah well it's
[2406.85] Stephen: out there there's there's some cool stuff like uh i've been working to try and test some of the
[2413.01] Stephen: open vtx stuff that's all analog i was talking about msp vtx the other day oh the et 125 i was
[2423.09] Stephen: so impressed by that i didn't buy the quad this is to richard warrick but i actually bought
[2429.25] Stephen: that frame i have that frame in a box down there the et 125 frame because i was going to build my
[2435.57] Stephen: own version of it and tweak some of the components i never got around to it but i've still got the
[2440.13] Stephen: frame down there in the box i kind of moved away from ducted stuff but yeah that looked like a lot
[2445.09] Stephen: of fun back in the day i think it had these uh sunny sky 1106 motors as well that were absolutely
[2452.77] Stephen: is that what you're about yeah yeah little it looked like a good good beginner quad to be honest
[2463.57] Stephen: i couldn't really fault it it's a good channel the camera was a bit rough i think yeah the camera
[2468.85] Stephen: is pretty rough and it was one of those yeah you you notice what's wrong with this what's wrong
[2474.53] Stephen: with this picture yeah this is before osds were standard oh my god how old is this four years ago
[2484.05] Stephen: yeah oh it's an l d a r c model and they were always in the business of clearing out old stock
[2490.77] Stephen: so this fc did not have an osd chip and i think that was my big beef with it which is why i was
[2496.77] Stephen: like oh i'll build my own burner things moved on so rapidly you know you're you're learning with
[2501.49] Stephen: whoops one day and you think you need ducted and then you learn on something without ducts and
[2506.37] Stephen: then you realize how crap ducts make everything fly you never look back and you know yeah something
[2510.93] Stephen: else man my man i had none skull mantis 85 ha i've got a story about the mantis 85 as well i ordered
[2522.86] Stephen: that with a flysky i6x radio it never arrived i ordered it from banggood raised an issue with
[2530.94] Stephen: them tried to claim on paypal sol very nearly put me off the entire hobby the mantis 85 was this cute
[2539.74] Stephen: little 85 mil i think like two inch props it was bright green props and it was a really dinky little
[2546.54] Stephen: thing lovely little park flyer uh and i should have it on my collection because i've tried to
[2552.62] Stephen: buy it but nope it never arrived but i'm kind of glad because i wouldn't have got my beautiful
[2558.78] Jack: yellow radio if it wasn't for that i've ended up with a flysky i6 why why is it 54 pound 90 what
[2569.73] Jack: the hell what what is a pro evo why is it so much money lord alone knows i mean the unify pro v3
[2581.17] Jack: that's by the 40 quid how much power do you get out these things are they really
[2588.53] Jack: the ones i've been looking at the top um if you go graphical osd a microphone okay fair enough
[2595.89] Stephen: it's got an osd built onto that's cute hmm i don't know why you'd want can you go back and
[2602.77] Stephen: look at the top because there's the open vtx stuff i was talking about up the top yeah you see the
[2607.57] Stephen: happy model ov 300 an ov 303 yeah yeah and that one in fact as well so these guys um you can flash
[2618.77] Stephen: them uh with the open vtx software they've got a proper bootloader on them so you can
[2625.09] Stephen: um upgrade them and they currently support smart audio and tramp you just select whichever one
[2630.05] Stephen: you want and it figures it out like whichever whichever one the flight controller starts
[2635.01] Stephen: speaking that's what it uses it's just such a nice nice concept you don't need to be guessing
[2640.45] Stephen: oh is it 2.1 do i have to set the power levels like this and then they added another feature
[2645.09] Stephen: so there's is this what you bought and i haven't got that no no i've got the uh happy model super
[2653.33] Stephen: cheap one it's like 25 quid okay very very bargain um but yeah they they got the vtx to speak msp
[2661.73] Stephen: to the flight controller so the vtx can can start talking msp the flight controller waits and goes
[2668.13] Stephen: oh yep you're you're speaking msp and the vtx then offloads all of its data to the flight controller
[2674.77] Stephen: and says my bands are this my channels are this my power levels this and the flight controller
[2680.53] Stephen: just fills in all that data automatically so there's no editing vtx tables at all oh for the
[2686.61] Stephen: win for the win no messing around i can't see that how is the happy model not here oh it's
[2695.17] Stephen: ancient and a bit cruddy um i'm not sure fair enough eola es 2040 x it's the one in the
[2703.81] Stephen: the top row hang on that's the cheapest one the cheapest one yeah there you are
[2712.37] Stephen: 26 quid you have to self-assemble it yourself you have to screw it together stick it with a bit
[2718.13] Stephen: of glue they they the first batch they actually shipped you a 3d printed uh bay they it wasn't
[2724.45] Stephen: even like that molded bay i got this really dodgy 3d printed box holy crap yeah but it's
[2732.61] Jack: 26 quid yeah i mean i'm loving the little mouse nibbles on the edge of the bcb
[2740.93] Stephen: and yeah there's a couple of screw posts inside so that the mouse nibbles are you slide it over
[2745.49] Stephen: the screw posts and put a couple of screws in and that bolts it in but you have to do it yourself
[2749.49] Stephen: because evidently the labor costs oh is that what these these yeah yeah they go over the little
[2755.65] Jack: plastic nubbins and the large one obviously is the tail end of the um pigtail i'm guessing
[2763.33] Jack: yeah probably oh my god i like analog no i mean i like analog but i remember
[2772.37] Jack: you know i was like searching for you know to follow follow my mates at the ldo seven years and
[2780.45] Jack: you know you are literally looking for a little speck and it's just it is horrible and my eyes
[2787.97] Jack: aren't getting any uh any younger you've never flown digital right so what's dom flying it wasn't
[2798.13] Stephen: flying beta flight or ionav or px4 or kiss or argy pilot or multi-wee or base flight or clean flight
[2809.57] Stephen: or silver flight or emu flight so so dom what are you flying i know what is what is he up to
[2820.37] Jack: i believe i'm buying um buying friend's uh module for um hd zero so oh yeah i think i'm going down
[2833.84] Jack: that route for now sorry don't keep us hanging what are you flying yeah don't worry you're not
[2840.64] Jack: on your own i believe if if painless had joined us i think he'd done a an interesting poll and
[2849.12] Jack: there was um oh sorry mate i just said what you said you've got to read the comment that uh
[2858.11] Stephen: that you're answering here because i don't know which one you're talking about what do you mean
[2863.82] Stephen: well it's like you started answering someone's question but i don't know which one you're
[2867.5] Jack: talking about oh no i got i just means the viewers i got a text yeah oh right right
[2873.5] Jack: lurgy was like you just said what i was asking about c slash delete c plus plus is dead to me
[2885.49] Jack: that's funny what's hydra up to i know oh dear oh dear here we go
[2895.41] Jack: so you're going to make his own clean flight i love it if dom was just like
[2901.33] Stephen: i stayed with clean flight i know rust scott into the linux kernel now there's a lot of people who
[2907.41] Stephen: are trumpeting its amazingness especially when you have multi-threaded code because it's memory safe
[2913.33] Stephen: well it's more memory safe a lot more memory safe because you've got like a thread that actually
[2918.93] Stephen: owns the object instead of basically every thread grabbing objects and trying to to mess
[2926.13] Stephen: around with them and hoping that no one sort of ruins the lovely tennis volley that's being played
[2932.13] Stephen: with this object between threads oh dom don't be mad the beta flight crowd does love you
[2942.11] Stephen: it's just that you're running a business and business and open source are always a difficult
[2945.95] Stephen: pairing we do like you do respect the massive amount of work that you've done really really
[2952.19] Jack: we do standing on the shoulders of giants my friend is that b flight b flight wouldn't be
[2958.75] Jack: anywhere without you actually cleaning up the code yeah that was from you know uh time cop
[2968.43] Jack: and you know it was it was horrendous and a mess and no one understood any of it
[2974.35] Stephen: yeah you know and if it weren't for you you know we should have done one again get him to uh talk
[2982.98] Stephen: if he's ready to maybe drop a hint or explain what's going on there i think that'd be a fascinating
[2988.34] Jack: story yeah did someone no i was gonna say he's a moderator no one can really sort of like
[2995.06] Jack: unmoderators it's all right mate yep and boris yeah boris insisting on filtering stuff
[3003.62] Jack: when i'm allowed slash ready i look forward to it dom you'll always be working here
[3010.66] Stephen: you know i think it's important you know i've been seeing both sides of the fence i think you know
[3016.9] Stephen: people do respect and value dom in beta flight but he's running a business and when you've got
[3022.34] Stephen: open source idealism plus business it's just a very difficult someone's going to be unhappy
[3028.18] Jack: about that it's the short version um yeah me and you need to hang out man i need to
[3037.92] Jack: i was enjoying our little discord things even though it was just like two people not properly
[3043.04] Jack: talking to each other just grunting at electronics grunting and shouting at escs yeah i need to clean
[3049.6] Jack: this bench it looks like a war zone i'm sorry yeah the chinese cloners as dom says are always
[3056.72] Stephen: happy yeah or at the very least fiercely productive yeah there's been uh there's another
[3065.28] Stephen: space of activity around that as well oh my word why can you go into it or is this dangerous territory
[3074.4] Stephen: i mean i can go into it and it's dangerous territory there's a lot of people who um
[3081.68] Stephen: there was a there was a psa from beta flight right so if you look at the latest psa without
[3087.84] Stephen: airing the laundry here there was some warnings given to manufacturers about
[3094.24] Stephen: paying for services when the project is free and continues to be free and the project members don't
[3103.92] Stephen: charge for their time some people have tried to to change that to make a buck out of it and
[3111.76] Stephen: there was a little bit of a fricker around that that you know wasn't helpful because board members
[3120.32] Stephen: were given the impression they had to pay for support pay to play that's not the case at all
[3126.32] Stephen: so there to be a psa release to say look guys you know you can continue releasing hardware and if
[3131.36] Stephen: you send samples to beta flight then we're going to work with you help you figure out how to make
[3138.32] Stephen: this work and perform at its best and things like that because a lot of people had had a message a
[3145.36] Stephen: lot of the major board vendors had had a message that they they should they had to pay to get
[3151.12] Stephen: access they had to pay to get their product testing yeah um anyway so so that's happened
[3157.92] Stephen: but then if you were to look around on github you might see new repos with names that sound a bit
[3165.6] Stephen: like beta flight that that are working with artery tech mcus and whose git history could be cleaner
[3176.08] Stephen: um yeah and when it's just an interesting situation of what happens what doesn't happen
[3184.72] Stephen: it's hard to tell all right because yeah yeah yeah if if people were
[3192.0] Stephen: being more open about it and working together as a team i think it wouldn't be a problem but
[3197.52] Stephen: it's it's it's challenging to work i guess with some of the cloners in china because they're like
[3202.56] Stephen: oh yeah there's a way to you know get a jump on this other company and do some closed version
[3207.76] Stephen: of this and then you know shill it around get some bucks it's um yeah it's not easy it's not great
[3218.8] Stephen: yeah um that's that you know they make you know dom's a saint by comparison he's trying to get
[3227.84] Stephen: a little bit of code in for his pixel osd to try and support himself whereas the other stuff was
[3234.64] Jack: much meaner and much more hardball yeah yeah uh kind of yeah kind of
[3246.34] Jack: oh it's not not easy it's not easy especially when a lot of people are doing this stuff for free
[3253.94] Stephen: and for fun yeah at the end of the day i just want to pretend that my bird it's not exactly
[3260.34] Jack: something i want to start here for a good time hearing about yeah and then you're having to pay
[3267.14] Jack: subscription services so yeah not not good so yeah what what are you gonna be working on for
[3277.79] Stephen: the rest of the week the rest of the week i'm gonna be trying to sleep in as much as i possibly
[3282.43] Stephen: can but i'd like to get the plane in the air i did have my little car did i show you my ridiculous
[3287.71] Jack: orange car i've quite enjoyed this rather fun no no i haven't the last update i had from you
[3293.79] Stephen: was the the naughty kitties oh yeah oh yeah my cats tried to poison themselves let's not talk
[3299.71] Stephen: about that um so i got got this car it's a wl toys um you might think standard rc car yeah i haven't
[3307.47] Stephen: put a camera on it or anything but what i have done which you might find amusing is i'm never
[3313.39] Stephen: really one for pistol grip controllers because yeah i grew up at a time when you got car controllers
[3320.59] Stephen: with sticks in the in the 80s that's what you did so can you see what it is yet you probably
[3330.13] Stephen: can't because the actual part that's involved is vanishingly small but you might see a cluster of
[3334.85] Stephen: wires next to the esc what i did was i slapped an express lrs module in there okay okay but yeah i
[3345.09] Stephen: found that there was one receiver there's a matec r24 um r24 p6 i think and that supports battery
[3360.37] Stephen: voltage telemetry right one you you got it yeah so that's basically the one you want if you want to
[3368.21] Stephen: get a generic pwm controlled model and fit it with express lrs because not only does it give you
[3376.29] Stephen: six channels of output i think i think that's the p6 yeah um it also has a vbat connection and it will
[3385.09] Stephen: tell you the battery voltage from two to eight s i believe so you you remember the big yellow plane
[3394.21] Jack: with you know that we put smoke and stuff that's what i bought that for it's going in that the
[3402.29] Stephen: del boy special yes sir yeah i've been very pleased with that it works an absolute treat
[3409.81] Stephen: it's it's very small you get all the header pins with it put it in a big bit of heat shrink and
[3415.65] Stephen: shoved it in there obviously car you don't need that many channels two channels it seems an
[3421.25] Stephen: overkill thing to get a six channel receiver but it's the only one i could find that had battery
[3427.81] Stephen: telemetry on it and most of the time with a car i just get carried away and the next thing i know
[3432.45] Stephen: i've completely killed the battery so it was my hope this time i could actually check the
[3436.53] Stephen: battery voltage so there we are i've mapped it so i've got um yore for turning and pitch for
[3444.93] Jack: throttle and that's it nice so yeah gonna try five s lipo on my four s quad
[3453.09] Jack: good luck audio geek and oh you'll be fine capacitors are your friend oh yeah yeah
[3460.77] Stephen: everyone should go on ebay and buy a big bag like five or ten at least panasonic
[3468.29] Stephen: uh extra low esr esr that's the one esr capacitors uh like 500 micro farad or just go balls to the
[3480.69] Stephen: wall and get a thousand and and get ones that are rated for about 1.5 times the voltage so you're
[3486.85] Stephen: all good in case there's any little whoopsies and not enough you go yeah definitely a good item to
[3492.53] Jack: have kicking around in the box yeah but i know i need to power test the retro quads and then wire up
[3504.13] Jack: the wire up the old xt60 maybe that's what i'll do when we finish the show i'll we'll finish that
[3513.17] Stephen: then have a have a hover test oh oh dom oh yes i do have drift cars i've got the cutest drift car
[3520.85] Stephen: in the world look at that look at that it's got wheels on yeah it's got um it's got proper
[3529.89] Stephen: little drift wheels on and a metal chassis in something that's about the size of the palm of
[3533.57] Stephen: your hand it's it's a hilarious little thing i think it was only about 35 quid and then i got
[3539.57] Stephen: alloy wheels to go on like just because it cracked me up and it's got lights got working lights on
[3545.25] Jack: that's it's quite the indicators don't like lurkies all about the scale no hand of god
[3554.13] Jack: oh strobing yeah you need you want to warn people about flashing lights yeah uh flashing
[3561.33] Stephen: back lights and front lights it's yeah and they've even thoughtfully put a power button under it so
[3567.01] Stephen: you can if you pinch it in just the right way which i now cannot do you can turn it on and off
[3573.82] Stephen: without taking the chassis off i managed to turn it on now i can't turn it off well that's that oh well
[3584.51] Stephen: there we are turned it off yeah it's quite placed thumping it with my clumsy hands i can turn it
[3591.15] Stephen: off without pulling out the pins yeah so you've got it's small enough you can like drift around
[3598.03] Stephen: the kitchen table absolute laugh it really is it makes everything feel huge like you can go on a
[3604.91] Stephen: little footpath that's two meters wide and it feels like a giant car park it's great be
[3612.11] Jack: all right man well uh that is all we've got time for i think i think that's it me and you might
[3619.39] Jack: be hanging out in uh in discord so if any of you do want to say hello yeah may or may not be there
[3627.63] Stephen: i think that was a wl toys um it's it's quite easy to find those because they're
[3633.87] Stephen: 124 and 128 scale there's not that many in that category so if you search for like 128 drift car
