[0.0] Jack: Hello, and you're listening to Let's Drone Out, a special thank you to our lovely patrons
[6.28] Jack: that help donate so that we can pay the editor to remove the swear words and silly things
[11.36] Jack: we say.
[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to…
[14.4] Jack: Carlos Campos!
[16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner.
[17.84] Frank: Sam Dahmer.
[19.68] Frank: On with the show.
[20.68] Curry: Let's Drone Out now.
[52.38] Jack: Hello, and you're listening to Let's Drone Out.
[56.74] Jack: Tonight, you're joined by everyone's favourite curry kitten.
[59.78] Jack: Hello!
[61.78] Jack: The man with the moustache, Stephen.
[63.78] Jack: Hello, everyone.
[65.78] Jack: And I'm Jack, bright until I fly.
[67.78] Jack: Hello.
[68.78] Jack: Good mmm…
[69.78] Jack: Good mmm…
[70.78] Jack: Evenings.
[71.78] Jack: I don't know what I was going to say then.
[73.78] Jack: Good mmm…
[74.78] Jack: Evenings.
[75.78] Jack: Evenings.
[76.78] Jack: Evenings.
[77.78] Stephen: Yeah, the meerkats are back.
[79.78] Stephen: The event you've been missing…
[80.78] Stephen: It is a little…
[81.78] Stephen: Up until now.
[82.78] Stephen: Evenings.
[83.78] Curry: It's a little hard to tell if it's morning or evening now, isn't it?
[86.74] Curry: Because it's solidly dark all the time.
[89.14] Curry: Yeah.
[90.14] Curry: There is no light time.
[92.14] Curry: Yeah.
[93.14] Curry: And wet.
[94.14] Stephen: Although we're bitter or anything.
[96.34] Stephen: We're just British.
[97.34] Stephen: It's different.
[98.34] Curry: I know.
[99.34] Curry: We're contractually obliged to mention the weather at least once in every conversation.
[104.66] Stephen: For reals.
[105.66] Stephen: Well, when it's a constant hazard in your flying field and what you think is a nice
[110.14] Stephen: green field is actually hiding about a solid, like, 20 mil of water across the entire field,
[116.78] Stephen: you only realise when you squelch into it.
[118.82] Stephen: Just below the tips of the grass, yeah, it's kind of on your mind a bit.
[122.62] Stephen: I was going to test GPS returns at home having finangled my GPS and got 12 satellites at
[128.42] Stephen: last but the fear, the fear it got me, the fear of random fail safes and plunging into
[133.46] Stephen: the soup.
[134.86] Curry: The real worry at this time is in a crash.
[137.74] Curry: I may not find it at all because it'd be completely swallowed if it goes in at the
[141.66] Curry: angle.
[142.66] Stephen: Yeah.
[143.66] Curry: Straight under.
[144.86] Stephen: Not a chance.
[145.86] Stephen: Yeah.
[146.86] Stephen: And that telltale little blue plume of smoke across the fields as the lipo shorts out.
[152.06] Stephen: If you're lucky.
[153.5] Curry: Give you a clue where it is.
[156.02] Curry: Smoke signal.
[157.02] Stephen: Yeah.
[158.02] Curry: Yeah.
[159.94] Curry: Yeah.
[160.94] Curry: So, yeah, Cole put up a thumbnail about the O3 air unit and I was just going to show you
[169.66] Jack: me can't be here.
[170.66] Jack: He's he's a long well.
[172.22] Jack: Get well, buddy.
[173.22] Jack: Yeah.
[174.22] Jack: Well, we want our Canadian positivity back.
[177.9] Jack: I know someone needs to sort of so long and quietly weep until he comes back.
[184.3] Curry: I'm forced to visit Canada next month just to just to bring my mood up and be around
[189.7] Curry: more Canadian people and make me happy.
[192.06] Stephen: Yeah.
[193.06] Stephen: A nation that manages to be cheerful at the prospect of seemingly eternal winter is a
[196.58] Stephen: miraculous thing.
[197.58] Stephen: Indeed.
[198.58] Curry: That's great.
[199.58] Curry: I barely get through.
[200.58] Curry: I'm not getting by bears or killed by moose and there's still jolly about it.
[203.38] Curry: No, I know.
[204.38] Curry: Must be something in the water.
[205.98] Curry: But, yeah, from my from my limited knowledge about DJI and air units, what I've come to
[211.7] Curry: realize from watching about 15 seconds is that this new all singing, all dancing air
[217.5] Curry: unit don't work with the original goggles.
[220.38] Curry: Some people aren't happy because, damn you, DJI, it's like some of us may have seen this
[227.82] Curry: sort of thing coming because there's there's not a lot of trust in DJI.
[233.34] Curry: And they have a habit of like saying, stand right there.
[239.22] Curry: Who is me?
[241.74] Stephen: Well, DJI just looks at their customer base, looks them dead in the eye and knows how much
[246.98] Stephen: are you willing to pay me?
[248.86] Stephen: That's what they want to know, isn't it?
[250.62] Stephen: How much how much can I put you through before you give up and go somewhere else?
[256.38] Stephen: And then they like dial it down just one tiny notch below that and sell it to you.
[262.66] Curry: I guess it's the old problem about DJI sell these goggles and then they bring out these
[266.14] Curry: new goggles and they realize that the customer who interests in the goggles have already
[270.26] Curry: bought the goggles and they say, how can we make people buy new goggles?
[273.9] Curry: And we're like, let's bring out a new air unit, discontinue that one and only make this
[277.1] Curry: compatible with the new goggles.
[278.82] Curry: That'll work.
[281.93] Stephen: Yep.
[282.93] Stephen: And they're still going to sell them by the bucket load.
[287.21] Stephen: So it only works if you've got the V2 goggles that have that mode where they could work
[291.89] Stephen: with the DJI potato drone, right?
[294.49] Stephen: So if they work with the potato, then they also work with the new O3A unit and you flash
[299.25] Stephen: them and you get an extra mode for the O3A unit.
[302.49] Stephen: But the original ones just had that single mode where they only work with the air units
[307.81] Stephen: and those are not capable of working with new O3A unit.
[312.37] Stephen: It looks like a nice bit of kit, but it's definitely more a GoPro with video out than
[318.05] Stephen: an actual FPV system.
[319.81] Stephen: It's tuned for that recording, not necessarily tuned for diving into dark spaces and letting
[326.21] Stephen: you see what's going on in the shadows.
[328.89] Curry: So it's the problem with that is that how most people tend to mount their cameras, which
[335.25] Curry: is sort of in between where the props come out and unless everybody's going to start
[339.17] Curry: flying sort of dead cat or H quads, then we're going to have a problem with like props being
[344.69] Curry: in the way and stuff.
[346.17] Stephen: Yeah, that's a big part of it.
[348.61] Stephen: And then some modern frames have tried to hit halfway house.
[351.13] Stephen: If you look at Chris Ross's stuff, he's not dead cat, but he tries to like get that, the
[356.93] Stephen: nose stuck out a bit further and go for a bit of a squash X to get the props out of
[361.61] Stephen: view, but it's quite wide.
[364.25] Stephen: So yeah, it's not going to work for a lot of these systems.
[366.77] Stephen: It's also quite wide, the actual camera lens assembly.
[371.53] Stephen: It's a regular 14 mil lens, I think, because I was looking at this earlier today and someone
[378.33] Stephen: had dismantled one of them.
[379.49] Stephen: So it's the same sort of lens that you'd see on a micro camera, but it's shrouded in this
[383.89] Stephen: huge lump of aluminium, which makes it much wider than any normal camera.
[391.57] Jack: I hear 15 noise.
[394.25] Stephen: Yeah, there we are.
[396.41] Curry: Don't don't run the microphone.
[400.65] Curry: It's my psycho cat that likes to kill me.
[402.89] Curry: She's only here to dig her claws into me.
[405.01] Stephen: Whose name is this?
[406.01] Curry: Then on the bits.
[407.01] Curry: This is Poms.
[408.01] Curry: Pompadom.
[409.01] Stephen: Pompadom.
[410.01] Stephen: Who doesn't keep still.
[411.77] Curry: She just goes rubbing around things, standing on my keyboard, standing on my man bits and
[418.69] Curry: putting her claws in him because she knows you're evil.
[422.29] Stephen: That's friendly, isn't it?
[423.61] Stephen: That's cat for friendly.
[425.53] Stephen: That's incredibly nice to stick the claws in.
[430.29] Curry: So I guess because I was, I have to say I was starting to falter and I was thinking,
[434.97] Curry: you know what?
[435.97] Curry: If I'm going to go digital and it's not open HD, should it be DJ, a DJ actually doing
[441.73] Curry: okay?
[442.73] Curry: But I see that and it instantly makes me think maybe walk snail.
[446.53] Curry: So how is the opposition?
[448.49] Curry: How do you mind?
[450.69] Stephen: You flew walks now to test it out, didn't you Steve?
[455.65] Stephen: So I've heard similar complaints to mine that it's not really designed for what I call the
[462.29] Stephen: big nose Europeans.
[464.01] Stephen: Us big nose Europeans with giant noses suffer a little bit from these goggles and I found
[469.81] Stephen: the walks now ones pretty painful.
[472.05] Stephen: They were all resting right at the top of my nose, the bridge of my nose.
[475.65] Stephen: And I've heard similar complaints about the DJI goggles.
[479.05] Stephen: If you are blessed with a smaller nose, that might be easier for you to manage.
[484.49] Stephen: I think we were joking before that HDFBV is going to lead to fields of flying enthusiasts
[491.13] Stephen: standing around in ugly functional clothing, but all with the most immaculate nose jobs
[496.81] Stephen: to fit the goggles on better.
[499.25] Curry: That's the direction we're going to have to go, guys.
[501.77] Curry: I used to think my nose was quite small and normal shaped until I had some sort of cartoon
[507.53] Curry: guy do a caricature and he said to me, these were his words, you have the perfect nose
[511.73] Curry: for a caricature.
[512.73] Curry: And I was like, what's that mean?
[513.73] Curry: Is it a big nose?
[514.73] Curry: And my wife's like, did you not know you had a massive nose?
[518.73] Curry: It's big.
[519.73] Stephen: It's not going to fit in them goggles.
[523.09] Stephen: Same here.
[524.09] Stephen: We're just hanging right off my nose in a very pressure, painful way.
[530.65] Stephen: Yeah.
[533.09] Stephen: So they're quite a nice system.
[535.41] Stephen: It looks cool.
[537.25] Stephen: You can set it to do 4K recording.
[540.45] Stephen: It gives you the same frame rate on the goggles that you get through the recording.
[545.37] Stephen: So if you want to record 4K 60, you get 60 FPS through to the goggles.
[552.45] Stephen: So you're a bit stuck, apparently, in that there's only certain combinations where you
[557.13] Stephen: can get the high frame rate to the goggles and good recording on the air unit.
[562.49] Stephen: But it looks like it's got an SD card slot and it records.
[566.33] Stephen: That's nice.
[567.33] Stephen: So it does 1080p at 100 hertz.
[569.37] Stephen: Right.
[570.37] Stephen: Warksnell, I think, is 1080p at 30 FPS.
[572.89] Stephen: FPS and hertz are the same for this purpose, right?
[577.57] Stephen: It's the number of fields that you're getting per second in the goggles.
[582.49] Stephen: So we've got a bit of a jump up to 1080p 100 on DJI, on the O3.
[590.21] Stephen: But then you've got to agree that DJI is where your money is going to go.
[595.77] Stephen: And there are some developments coming down the line which are going to do things like
[599.09] Stephen: increase the grid size for the OSD, which DJI may or may not bother to adopt.
[605.33] Stephen: And there's going to be customizations for putting fields like the recording indicator,
[610.81] Stephen: the voltage of the goggles, the temperature of the air units, and all these pieces of
[616.61] Stephen: information you're normally seeing in your goggles, being able to customize those and
[619.57] Stephen: move them around in the beta flight OSD.
[623.41] Stephen: So you can get them out of the way of your flight controller OSD.
[628.37] Stephen: So if you want to have your timers in a specific place on screen and an analog they fitted
[634.01] Stephen: there but in digital, they overlap with the existing onscreen elements, you can move those
[638.45] Stephen: out of the way.
[640.01] Stephen: And there's a big question mark as to whether DJI is going to do any of this because to
[644.49] Stephen: my knowledge, DJI are not talking to anyone about their implementation, and they're not
[650.17] Stephen: consulting anyone.
[651.85] Stephen: And as far as I'm aware, there's no way to add extra glyphs or update the font set.
[657.85] Stephen: So you've got MSP DisplayPort working right, but if someone decides to add an extra page
[663.33] Stephen: of fonts, say they want to be able to allow red text or they want to allow extra signal
[668.65] Stephen: strength indicators or something, DJI are probably not going to add those.
[675.49] Stephen: And so you'll be in the same position that you were with the V1 goggles where you're
[678.77] Stephen: waiting for DJI to do a software update so that your OSD keeps parity with what the flight
[683.81] Stephen: controllers are trying to do.
[685.29] Stephen: So I'm still, yeah, I'm kind of reluctant to go do that.
[691.24] Stephen: Trixie.
[694.19] Stephen: My socks.
[698.47] Stephen: It's all just a bit of annoyance because fundamentally, we don't have any manufacturer who's really
[705.35] Stephen: responsive to the community so far, apart from HD zero and the HD zero stuff is kind
[710.63] Stephen: of limited and a bit more race focused.
[713.47] Stephen: There's not really, walksnail are doing some work with flight controller firmware, but
[720.59] Stephen: it's kind of not in the open and no one is entirely sure how far that's going to go.
[728.43] Stephen: So we'll keep our fingers crossed for now and see how the cookie crumbles, I guess.
[733.79] Jack: And then wonder how long before, you know, they kind of get bored of this, like, or feel
[738.99] Jack: like there's not enough adoption.
[742.23] Jack: Right.
[743.23] Jack: Because we're lucky to have competition, but it's spread three ways.
[751.03] Jack: So they think they're not making enough units.
[753.95] Jack: I mean, it kind of makes you wonder, like, for all those like V1 units, as early adoption
[759.87] Jack: people, like, and they're making the O3s, like, how long are they going to continue
[765.71] Jack: making the old units and vistas and so forth?
[770.59] Jack: Well, they're not making the vistas anymore, are they, because of Cadex has ceased.
[778.51] Stephen: It's all just conjecture at this point.
[780.39] Stephen: I mean, they'll make stuff that makes them money.
[783.27] Stephen: If they see the sales of those systems continue, then they'll probably carry on doing them.
[787.71] Stephen: But who knows?
[789.95] Stephen: Hey, Ho.
[791.51] Stephen: I saw Curry was musking around with old systems that are no longer supported on the analog
[796.91] Stephen: side of the fence.
[797.91] Stephen: So Curry, you had some old immersion RC stuff where you had to break out some goggles that
[803.07] Stephen: you hadn't used in a few years, right?
[804.99] Curry: Oh, they're so bad.
[806.55] Curry: I remember getting them at the time thinking, this is brilliant.
[808.71] Curry: I can see stuff.
[810.03] Curry: That just feels like someone's trying to remove your eyes with a toilet plunger or
[813.47] Curry: something.
[814.47] Curry: That awful.
[815.47] Curry: Jack, you had goggles, which had the the ICUPS in, didn't you?
[819.07] Curry: Some proper seal.
[820.23] Jack: I had, I had, I bought the Dominator V1s, but they were Dominator V1 V3s.
[831.91] Jack: And they had, no, no, like Dominator V1s.
[839.43] Jack: Oh, they're still the V1s.
[841.27] Jack: Yeah, they were V1s, so they were blank.
[843.95] Jack: But there was that it was the greatest ration of them.
[848.03] Jack: I loved how the camera like follows Poppy.
[852.11] Curry: I think I've got blood on my.
[854.39] Curry: She's ripped me apart.
[856.63] Curry: She's only doing this to torture me.
[859.19] Curry: I have the most evil cats.
[861.63] Curry: Coles are like lovely.
[862.95] Curry: And mine is just like, hello.
[866.11] Curry: Yeah, if she gets angry now.
[868.55] Curry: There's some like bits of quad stuff on the floor.
[870.47] Curry: She'll pick up like a servo lead and take it away because, you know, as it pisses me
[873.63] Curry: off.
[875.11] Curry: Can you?
[877.07] Curry: Yes, I was having fun with old stuff with them.
[881.99] Jack: Man, I hated those ICUPS.
[883.95] Jack: I remember in the depth of the summer, you're wearing black goggles.
[888.15] Jack: You're just sweating.
[889.31] Jack: And then the cups used to fill up with sweat.
[892.39] Jack: It was so gross.
[893.87] Curry: Not only that, they fall off because they're not held on very well.
[897.47] Jack: No, they're too.
[900.23] Jack: Yeah, there's two little like, has anyone ever had like a knock to a fan?
[906.59] Jack: But basically, the ICUPS are molded and they had like two little bits of point upwards
[912.71] Jack: and you'd feed them through.
[914.59] Jack: And then they were kind of like O-ring seal around.
[919.03] Jack: But you had these two points that you'd pull through and then trim the size.
[923.43] Jack: And if they were trimmed too short, then the ICUPS would then fall out.
[929.95] Jack: It was awful, an awful design.
[933.11] Curry: And they could instantly mist up, of course, because there was no fan.
[938.63] Curry: And if you're having a bit of a sweat on or it was cold out and it's on your forehead
[942.23] Curry: and it's like, forget it, can't see anything.
[944.31] Curry: So you got very used to like flying with one hand and holding the goggles slightly off
[948.03] Curry: your face, waiting for them to demist as you were going.
[951.95] Curry: That was fun.
[953.75] Stephen: I had the CyO2s that didn't have a fan and I used those for ages and they had the rubber
[961.31] Stephen: cup as well.
[962.31] Stephen: I actually quite enjoyed that and I thought that was quite a comfortable fit, but I never
[966.47] Stephen: really used them in the peak of summer, I have to say.
[970.07] Stephen: Yeah, they're a couple of years newer than the old fat sharks, but they did have the
[975.55] Stephen: kind of big sucker cup onto your face.
[978.99] Jack: Yeah.
[979.99] Jack: Hang on.
[980.99] Jack: I don't know whether I explained the eye cups very well, but I provide a photographic evidence
[988.83] Stephen: where it looks like someone's tried to remove your eyeballs for the sink plunger.
[993.11] Curry: What I've been doing today is continuing on that to build the KK1 quad.
[998.99] Curry: And what I'm finding is that, I was telling Stephen about this, it's really hard to find
[1003.99] Curry: the firmware, the original KK firmware now, and even trying to run the application to
[1009.59] Curry: update the board doesn't work, even though it's written in Java.
[1013.23] Curry: And I have Java on my system, it's like, no, I had to run a VM to run the thing and then
[1018.91] Curry: it says, oh, there is no firmware available on the repositories because that doesn't exist
[1022.79] Curry: anymore.
[1023.79] Jack: Yeah, you pull these little tabs through.
[1027.79] Curry: This was the later version.
[1031.15] Curry: The eye caps I have don't have that bit, they're just, there's literally just no, no, no, no,
[1037.43] Jack: they would be trimmed off.
[1039.19] Curry: Oh, are they trimmed off?
[1041.67] Jack: Yeah, like maybe.
[1043.55] Jack: Dominate.
[1044.55] Jack: No, that goes through a little hole in the, if you look on the inside, your goggles, there's
[1052.83] Jack: like a little, there's a little hole there and they feed through and it's to try and
[1060.03] Jack: lock them on.
[1061.51] Jack: Here you go.
[1064.86] Jack: Yeah, the originals didn't, but there'd be a hole there and it would feed through.
[1072.38] Curry: No, mine don't have that.
[1073.3] Curry: They just have eye caps that fall off and they're only held on by that little seal that
[1076.9] Curry: runs all the way around the outside.
[1078.18] Curry: But because it's not particularly tight, it's like, look, fall off halfway.
[1084.38] Stephen: I found my original Skyzone goggle bag, but it doesn't have my original goggles in, so
[1090.22] Stephen: I don't know where they've gone.
[1092.14] Jack: Now, look, see, you'd feed that through and then snippy snip, snip, snip.
[1099.1] Curry: No, mine don't have that.
[1101.3] Curry: Else I'd stay in place.
[1104.14] Jack: Mm.
[1105.14] Jack: There you go.
[1107.14] Curry: Boo.
[1108.14] Curry: Anyway, I've managed, I found my old, I had to look up what it was, I had to try and find
[1114.18] Curry: it.
[1115.18] Curry: Boss Cam VTX.
[1116.62] Curry: This is how old it is.
[1118.1] Curry: Before I got my first Immersion RC VTX, I had a Boss Cam VTX and I've seen that in some
[1123.22] Curry: bands on regular goggles.
[1126.74] Curry: Well, it didn't work on regular goggles.
[1129.18] Curry: I had a separate receiver.
[1132.5] Curry: And this is back in the day.
[1134.94] Curry: Yeah, I think it's on E, the band.
[1137.38] Curry: And I used to have, I cut up a piece of shelf, or bookshelf, and I'm now back in the
[1143.1] Stephen: day before goggles had like 48 channel receivers, or 60 channel ones.
[1148.54] Curry: That's because the original modules you had were like fact-sharp based, it's like, here's
[1154.86] Curry: a fact-sharp module, it does the fact-sharp channels.
[1158.54] Curry: And there were two of those, the next one called NextWave was much more sensitive, but
[1162.94] Curry: it still only did those eight channels.
[1167.22] Curry: It was a long time before we got stuff that did everything.
[1171.74] Stephen: Yeah, I have to say that backpack functionality was kind of magic, testing that, that was
[1176.58] Stephen: just kind of nuts.
[1180.26] Stephen: Set the channel on the radio and everything just goes, oh, that was pretty cool.
[1184.22] Stephen: I'm enjoying that.
[1185.22] Stephen: It's quite good.
[1186.22] Curry: I like the fact that with the backpack, I mean, I tend to use the same channel all the
[1190.22] Curry: time, so it doesn't really matter, but the idea is you can just turn on a quad and it
[1194.66] Curry: goes, oh, OK, let's change channel and let's change your goggles and we're ready to go.
[1201.14] Stephen: You know, I was thinking with your KK1 board, Currie, you know how you've got the pots to
[1205.54] Stephen: change your gains.
[1208.86] Stephen: What about wiring up some servos so that you could tune it via servos?
[1216.54] Stephen: To attach servos to little things and make them turn.
[1220.5] Stephen: So you could tune it from your radio, send these servos up and down.
[1226.54] Curry: I really, I'm not sure there's that much to tune, really, it's kind of like, I mean, I
[1232.98] Curry: found the original manual for it and the fact they say fly it, trim it level and then start
[1240.58] Curry: messing with the gains.
[1241.26] Curry: The fact you have to talk about trimming things in multi-copters is insane.
[1245.82] Curry: It's like, oh, that just mine keeps veering off to this side.
[1248.46] Curry: Just trim it back.
[1249.42] Curry: It's the exact opposite you do now.
[1253.18] Curry: It's crazy talk.
[1254.78] Curry: The horror, the horror.
[1256.14] Curry: I can show you what it looks like at the moment.
[1257.74] Curry: It is almost there.
[1262.98] Curry: This is the build.
[1264.26] Curry: Oh, wow.
[1264.9] Curry: The KK is under there.
[1266.9] Stephen: Look at those arms.
[1268.42] Curry: That's a lot of arms.
[1269.18] Curry: Yep. This is this is what you needed back in the day.
[1272.78] Stephen: What sort of props are you going to have on that?
[1274.66] Stephen: Looks like a beast.
[1275.38] Curry: I think I used to fly this with nine inch props.
[1278.1] Curry: I found some eight inch ones so I can try those out.
[1282.62] Curry: But yeah, these are 1000 kV motors.
[1287.18] Curry: So we'll see.
[1289.38] Stephen: Like a 4S then.
[1291.7] Curry: No, it's generally flown on 3S and I think I'm going to have to continue that
[1295.14] Curry: because I found it's what I did find.
[1297.78] Curry: I was looking for old cameras and I found this one that I used to have attached.
[1301.3] Curry: And this has got a servo arm so I can go up and down.
[1304.5] Curry: There was actually a feature on the KK2.
[1306.98] Curry: So if you lent it forward, this thing would like trim itself up.
[1309.94] Curry: And as you came back, it did that.
[1311.7] Curry: But that was almost unflyable.
[1313.86] Curry: You completely lost your height.
[1315.54] Stephen: You gave the opinion that it's unflyable even when you've got a modern flight
[1318.9] Stephen: controller that actually behaves itself.
[1321.26] Curry: So I figured I might have this just just to manually do stuff.
[1324.98] Curry: And this is this is the old BOSCAM BTX, which looks like that, 200 milliwatts.
[1331.18] Curry: And the back here.
[1332.38] Curry: Where are we? Let's find them.
[1335.14] Curry: You've got this bit there, which is where we have to see dip switches.
[1339.38] Curry: And what this does, it takes 12 switches.
[1342.46] Curry: The reason I'm flying it on 3S is because it's less complicated.
[1345.46] Curry: This takes up to 16 volts.
[1349.06] Curry: So I put a 3S directly in there.
[1351.66] Curry: Wave it at the camera.
[1353.06] Curry: Here it is. I put 3S directly in here.
[1355.9] Curry: Yeah. And what it does, it has the same
[1360.66] Curry: voltage coming out here and then this feeds into the camera,
[1364.34] Curry: which also runs off 12 volts.
[1365.66] Curry: So I can run the whole thing on one battery without any power
[1368.98] Curry: distribution or or voltage regulation and just do it that way.
[1374.14] Curry: And the entire board just runs from the fact that the ESC has got a back in it.
[1378.9] Curry: And that runs the board and then feeds through to the receiver to run the five
[1383.18] Curry: volt thing. What could go wrong?
[1388.54] Curry: Most things. Yeah, a lot.
[1392.26] Curry: But it's fun to find out.
[1394.58] Curry: It was it's kind of fun to fly.
[1397.34] Curry: And maybe maybe I'll try.
[1400.46] Curry: I'll try the things.
[1401.26] Curry: I've still got a few different boards I haven't tried yet.
[1404.74] Stephen: Do those flamewheel arms tend to bounce and bend rather than snap?
[1409.7] Curry: So that's that's a flamewheel copy back in the day.
[1413.86] Curry: Every everybody had a flamewheel, including myself.
[1416.1] Curry: And that is a copy. But the arms are exactly the same.
[1418.9] Curry: And I've I've crashed my my NASA one when it was having it was having problems,
[1426.22] Curry: which I eventually tracked down to the dodgy DJI bullet connectors,
[1431.18] Curry: which was so loose that you could just get the wrong vibration
[1435.42] Curry: and you'd get this minuscule little part where the motor would desync
[1440.46] Curry: because it suddenly lost one of the connections.
[1442.54] Curry: So you're going along and suddenly there's a whoop, whoop.
[1444.9] Curry: And if you're close to the ground, then it goes into it.
[1447.42] Curry: So I went along quite fast and I snapped one of those arms completely in half
[1452.46] Curry: and had to get a new one.
[1454.98] Curry: Other than that, I haven't done any real serious crashes on those ones.
[1459.38] Curry: But, yeah, I think they're a bit brittle rather than bendy.
[1463.7] Stephen: But I wonder how the flight controller just get some like F7 or H7
[1469.66] Stephen: and put it on an old flamewheel and try and thrash the pants off it on 6S or something.
[1474.74] Stephen: It could be amusing.
[1475.78] Curry: I think it'd be OK if you got the whole thing, whole thing right.
[1478.58] Curry: So I tried flying the 450 I had on a modern flight controller,
[1484.58] Curry: but I only had the old 900 kV motors and the 30 amp
[1490.62] Curry: that had to run off PWM.
[1492.58] Curry: And that was awful because you just couldn't get that tuned.
[1496.34] Curry: It's so slow to react because it's like big props.
[1499.38] Curry: You just can't spin them up and down as quick.
[1501.58] Curry: So, yeah, if you had the right stuff, it'd be right.
[1504.58] Curry: I think yellow.
[1505.98] Jack: Would you like to know some good news?
[1509.02] Curry: Yes, please.
[1510.9] Jack: I have two of those official DJI arms if you want them.
[1518.38] Stephen: Well, the official ones are up to 10 percent less wobbly than the clone ones.
[1522.94] Jack: Yeah. And I've got full size Sunny Sky motors.
[1528.22] Jack: If you're interested, would you like me to to show you?
[1533.58] Jack: Go on then.
[1534.86] Stephen: They're going to have like a giant spindle sticking out the top of them, aren't they?
[1538.42] Stephen: It's going to be like a full six inches of spindle.
[1540.78] Curry: Look at that.
[1542.78] Curry: That is a monster.
[1544.7] Curry: What is what is the writing on the side say it is?
[1549.22] Jack: X to 2212.
[1554.5] Jack: Like 980 kV.
[1560.06] Jack: Twenty two twelve, sir.
[1561.66] Curry: It's a lot of volume.
[1563.18] Curry: That's a twenty two twelve.
[1564.22] Curry: But your sunny skies look much bigger.
[1567.5] Stephen: It's a black.
[1568.9] Stephen: It must be the ninja.
[1571.02] Jack: I did not say that, people.
[1574.74] Jack: Low Caroline Taylor.
[1578.54] Jack: Old Stevens into the old two tone porno monstrous.
[1584.14] Jack: Yeah, I don't know.
[1585.42] Jack: Like it's up to you that they're there if you want them.
[1591.22] Curry: Well, thank you for your fact.
[1593.02] Curry: But I have got I'm not saying.
[1595.18] Curry: Did you do anything wrong?
[1597.66] Curry: But now I found it.
[1598.94] Curry: They they're unbranded and they were so out of balance.
[1601.78] Curry: I've actually had to put tape on the motors to try and balance the motors out.
[1606.5] Curry: This is how bad they are.
[1608.62] Curry: I actually built this before and I called it el cheapo,
[1612.14] Curry: because even at the time, this stuff was I got really cheap, nasty stuff.
[1617.74] Curry: And I've been from it and now it's 10 years in the past.
[1621.78] Curry: It's vintage. Yes.
[1625.18] Curry: It's it's it's it's fun to reminisce, though, at least.
[1629.1] Jack: Yeah. Well, if you want if you want those arms, you can have them.
[1634.54] Jack: Well, I don't know anyone else with said homage.
[1640.86] Curry: Thank you. I still I've still got a 450 frame with with four arms as well.
[1645.42] Curry: So I I'm OK.
[1648.02] Curry: I did I just smashed it up and I think.
[1651.58] Curry: Because that one, I when I first got free sky, I had these V8 receivers.
[1656.02] Curry: I bought the wrong receivers.
[1657.54] Curry: I thought they were the telemetry ones and they weren't.
[1660.62] Curry: They were really crappy ones.
[1662.58] Curry: And that's when I went to the day I'm putting a this is an original.
[1668.7] Curry: D8 receiver, this is the D8 R2, which are pretty good.
[1672.98] Curry: And would you like to know what I'm flying this with in terms of radio?
[1677.26] Jack: Excuse me, Cap. I can only imagine the art.
[1680.98] Jack: The the 9X please be a nice string tied
[1684.82] Stephen: to each other's sides of the craft.
[1686.54] Jack: The Turnigy 9X.
[1688.62] Jack: It's the 9X.
[1690.94] Jack: Without a module like in the antenna module in the back.
[1696.22] Jack: We're using a few slow module in the back, but it's just a bit easy.
[1701.78] Curry: This is my super modified one with a smarty parts board.
[1706.86] Curry: The backlight we've taken weirdly.
[1710.3] Curry: They these came with a module in the back you could remove,
[1714.58] Curry: but there was a wire going underneath and out the top.
[1718.02] Curry: So you had to remove all that to use the module.
[1721.94] Jack: Yeah, they they they didn't do an internal module.
[1725.62] Jack: They just stuck an internal module in the module by and then fed.
[1732.54] Jack: And the other thing was is you couldn't if you look,
[1735.78] Jack: the molding's wrong on the back.
[1738.06] Jack: So you can't even use a normal module without cutting a little bit
[1742.34] Jack: of the plastic out, which I'm assuming that you did.
[1747.3] Jack: Can you have a look? Let's have a look.
[1748.78] Curry: Yeah, I mean, because there was.
[1752.5] Curry: I remember doing something in the back.
[1754.02] Stephen: It's a wire bowl of coal.
[1756.98] Curry: Oh, yeah, you mean, look, there's a hole.
[1758.9] Curry: There's a hole up there.
[1760.38] Curry: That's where I had to take the thing out.
[1762.66] Curry: Yeah. But the pins are at least the same.
[1765.98] Curry: But, yeah, that's where that thing fed through.
[1767.86] Curry: So it's just like, let's cut.
[1769.66] Curry: Oh, yeah, had some it has some bit coming out, didn't it?
[1772.26] Curry: So you had to cut that away.
[1774.02] Curry: It's so garbage.
[1776.9] Curry: And so that was amazing because I I flew that for quite a while
[1781.22] Curry: on the original firmware.
[1782.86] Curry: And it's not until I got that board and got to the next.
[1785.66] Curry: I thought, this is amazing now. This is much better.
[1789.18] Jack: I I on the inside of mine, I desoldered the the sticks
[1796.62] Jack: and then put the proper connectors so that you could change them.
[1800.3] Jack: And I put Taranis gimbals in my nine X
[1804.98] Jack: and you had to kind of like switch them around so it worked properly.
[1808.46] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience,
[1811.58] Frank: downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only sensors
[1815.74] Frank: to please the iTunes people hosted on the Internet,
[1818.02] Frank: forwarded through to your podcast provider,
[1819.82] Frank: downloaded, playing on your device and is now playing in your ears.
[1823.58] Frank: All thanks to our patrons.
[1825.74] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits.
[1829.1] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out.
[1834.1] Jack: Is there anyone on the
[1838.9] Jack: discord chat?
[1840.5] Jack: I wonder if anyone's actually using that.
[1842.62] Jack: And we've just been ignoring it because I've got.
[1844.58] Stephen: Oh, I hadn't seen anyone.
[1846.9] Stephen: Well, public voice general.
[1849.58] Stephen: Oh, I can't join that because then I'll be speaking into public voice general chat.
[1854.06] Stephen: It might be. No, there's no one.
[1856.38] Stephen: Yeah, if they are, they're quiet.
[1860.46] Stephen: Should we join the chat on Discord as well?
[1862.54] Stephen: Because we we did that after the show,
[1864.94] Stephen: but we didn't do it during the show, which might be a crucial error.
[1868.94] Jack: Well, Clive and Caroline joined and then they disappeared.
[1873.54] Jack: And I don't know.
[1875.18] Jack: I don't know why.
[1876.14] Jack: But I mean, we need to do we need to do this month's bonus show.
[1881.14] Stephen: But for bonus.
[1883.62] Jack: Yeah.
[1885.06] Jack: Which I don't know how hurry getting feels about that.
[1889.54] Jack: Can't do it tonight.
[1891.1] Curry: Why?
[1892.22] Curry: I'm required to spend time with the family watching celebrities get
[1897.06] Curry: mutilated and stuff.
[1900.02] Stephen: Have any of them died yet?
[1901.82] Curry: Afraid not.
[1903.1] Stephen: Oh, OK.
[1904.74] Stephen: Well, do let us know if that annoying MP chap meets a sticky end.
[1909.22] Curry: I'm afraid he still eats it.
[1912.26] Curry: Well, he's eating lots of nasty things,
[1914.34] Stephen: but he hasn't.
[1915.66] Stephen: Yeah.
[1917.22] Curry: Boo.
[1918.94] Curry: Oh, Caroline said she's just bought the O3 unit just to try.
[1924.82] Stephen: Oh, really? Oh, wow.
[1926.78] Stephen: Brave, very brave.
[1930.2] Stephen: If I had the V2 goggles, I might give it a shot, but a last minor, the V1.
[1935.8] Stephen: So I'm not sure I can be bothered.
[1939.56] Stephen: It sounds cool to be able to do 1080p, and I think it gets a wee bit further
[1944.4] Stephen: than the OG kit because it's got that H265 goodness.
[1949.16] Stephen: So it can like struggle along at three megabit and give you something that's
[1952.96] Stephen: flyable, whereas on H264, three megabit is just like a wall of colored tiles.
[1960.44] Stephen: And you give up and try and punch out.
[1963.68] Curry: Yeah, the file sizes on H265 are crazy, aren't they?
[1967.88] Curry: Compression on that's pretty amazing.
[1971.08] Stephen: You can get by with about two thirds the amount of data.
[1975.32] Stephen: So if you think about when you're streaming over the air, instead of needing
[1979.44] Stephen: sort of five megabit, you can get by on three megabit and you get the same sort
[1983.8] Stephen: of quality that you would get on 50 megabit down at like 30, 35 megabit.
[1989.72] Stephen: It's pretty awesome.
[1992.04] Stephen: So it's nice to have, but it doesn't look a hell of a lot different.
[1995.4] Curry: Sorry.
[1995.96] Curry: I would ask Jack if he regrets selling his original DJI FPV goggles before I
[2001.4] Curry: just used them, or if he's just feeling smug about going for the TAVA one, which
[2009.44] Curry: I've already forgotten the name of.
[2012.44] Jack: What's the module?
[2015.24] Jack: What's the thing?
[2016.4] Jack: The HZ0.
[2018.72] Jack: That's it.
[2020.6] Jack: Yeah, yeah, a little bit.
[2022.0] Jack: I mean, I still, I still lost a lot of money on those.
[2025.12] Jack: So, you know, I don't, I don't feel great about it whatsoever.
[2030.72] Jack: No matter how long, you know, it kind of carries on for.
[2036.24] Jack: If you'd hold on to them, they might've gone up a bit.
[2039.48] Stephen: Sorry.
[2039.96] Curry: But then I'd be making a video about you being a sculptor.
[2042.16] Curry: So it's not good.
[2045.12] Stephen: Yeah.
[2045.36] Stephen: I think Jack's about as far away as you can get from being a sculptor.
[2048.96] Curry: I know he keeps, he just keeps offering to send stuff for free.
[2052.4] Curry: Have this, take it.
[2053.52] Curry: It's nothing.
[2054.32] Curry: I'll pay you.
[2055.88] Curry: No, no.
[2056.28] Curry: It's like, are you excited, Jack, about HZ0?
[2058.92] Curry: Because it feels like HZ0 is one thing on its own and walks now on the
[2065.36] Curry: DGR trying to do different things.
[2067.88] Curry: And I guess it's all about latency versus resends to get the best possible picture.
[2074.04] Jack: Yeah.
[2074.44] Jack: I don't, I don't know until I, until I have it and play with it.
[2080.08] Jack: And then I've still got a buyer.
[2082.84] Jack: I've still got to buy a like module unit thing with it anyway, et cetera, et cetera.
[2088.96] Jack: So, you know, I don't know.
[2091.32] Jack: And I don't know what quad I'm going to put it in either because at the
[2097.76] Jack: moment I've been trying to do SH connect connections and like crimp them and
[2105.88] Jack: like put them into stuff and it's just been an absolute nightmare.
[2110.04] Jack: So at the moment I've, you know, I've had this ESC sat on my desk and I just
[2116.96] Jack: haven't been able to like do or get anywhere with anything at all.
[2124.24] Jack: I'm just, I'm struggling really.
[2126.28] Jack: I got out.
[2128.36] Jack: Um, I haven't got HZ0 yet, but I think I might be buying, uh, my friend Dave's module.
[2135.8] Jack: So, and that's when I, yeah, I mean, it's something, you know, I was like, I, I, I
[2146.88] Jack: had a little go, we kind of like met up and it was like the last time that I went
[2151.88] Jack: out flying with the guys and had a really good time and he kind of, he let me, he
[2156.72] Jack: let me use these like six S squad and it had HZ0 and it was just, it was just nice.
[2163.92] Jack: It was nice to be able to see really, I think I'll have, I think I'll have a good
[2168.84] Jack: time, I'll have a good time, like following people and chasing things.
[2173.84] Stephen: And, um, you know, did you see the full screen of pants pooping?
[2182.64] Jack: Yeah, yeah.
[2183.76] Jack: It is, that is terrifying as long as I don't sort of, I might be a bit sort of
[2189.6] Jack: like Percy with the, the sort of like range and that, cause it is, it's horrible.
[2194.56] Jack: The breakup is something to get round, but I don't know, it's like being slapped
[2199.92] Stephen: around the face.
[2200.56] Stephen: It's quite violent.
[2202.04] Jack: Yeah, it is very brutal, but, um, you know, I'm, I mean, I, you know, I'm going to,
[2211.44] Jack: you know, obviously speak to menace, stick some menace antennas on and just
[2216.4] Jack: kind of, you know, go with it because at the moment it'll be nice to kind of, you
[2222.28] Jack: know, just chuck them in the back of the, the, the cords I've got the, um, you know,
[2229.52] Jack: like some of the apex is, and then it'll be like, you know, it means that I get rid
[2235.6] Jack: of like the OSD boards, um, you know, the, I don't know about the power regulation
[2244.16] Jack: that might go, but you know, it will just be nice to kind of like, you know, come up
[2252.4] Stephen: to the success, aren't they?
[2254.64] Stephen: So you can just run everything off feedback and call it good.
[2259.77] Stephen: Yeah.
[2260.09] Stephen: I did a little bit of a visual upgrade as well in the Skyo 4X.
[2264.97] Stephen: I put a new steady view of what they call it steady mix rapid mix or something receiver
[2273.09] Stephen: in them, which has E LRS backpack built into it.
[2277.09] Stephen: And I thought I'd give it a little bit of thrash around the park today.
[2280.33] Stephen: And I was slaloming through all these trees around this outside the park.
[2283.97] Stephen: And this time of year, you've got to avoid all the low hanging scraggle.
[2287.65] Stephen: There's like a big row of Oak trees that go all the way around the park.
[2290.77] Stephen: And I was diving in and out and in and out.
[2293.37] Stephen: And I used to get break up and sort of have the time back, but I thought I'd just give
[2298.01] Stephen: it a go, put it on there on the mixed signal and, you know, the kind of smart
[2302.69] Stephen: frame combining stuff.
[2304.17] Stephen: And I got all the way around and really surprised at how good the signal is, which
[2308.45] Stephen: has been a nice little perk that I didn't expect.
[2311.89] Stephen: I used to run it in diversity or normal mode, but the field combining stuff seems
[2316.05] Stephen: to work really well.
[2317.73] Stephen: I can't remember when I switched it off.
[2319.13] Stephen: I think I had a problem with one VTX and switched it off and I must have left it
[2323.01] Stephen: off for months and I put it on again.
[2324.77] Stephen: I'm like, wow, yeah, this is even better than I remember.
[2327.93] Curry: It does make a difference, doesn't it, in those tricky areas where it can build a
[2332.61] Curry: frame out of seemingly nothing.
[2336.93] Stephen: Yeah, and I was trying to avoid tiny branches, so it was really doing the job.
[2342.65] Curry: It's nice that it's got the backpack built in because I have to say it's a bit of a
[2345.85] Curry: hassle to stuff it in your Google module bay.
[2350.25] Curry: That's why I didn't want to swap my module around.
[2353.05] Curry: It's like, no, there's a backpack in there.
[2354.37] Curry: I don't want to take that out.
[2355.21] Curry: It's hard to fit everything back in again.
[2356.89] Stephen: So with the SkyZones, they've got a module that's got two parts.
[2361.37] Stephen: It's got a board called, I think, the main receiver board.
[2366.21] Stephen: And then there's what they call the fusion board, which is a daughter board that has
[2369.73] Stephen: all the smarts on it.
[2371.53] Stephen: And that fusion board is what you get upgraded.
[2375.97] Stephen: So you have a little module there with the USB plug on and you simply put a different
[2384.84] Stephen: daughter board on and that gives you Express LRS.
[2387.08] Stephen: And you are able to solder Express LRS receivers in there and try and wedge it all in.
[2392.8] Stephen: But this was just a cleaner solution.
[2394.64] Stephen: And I had the V1 hardware as well.
[2397.48] Stephen: So people were reporting some issues with that.
[2400.12] Stephen: And I thought, well, peace of mind, I'll just upgrade.
[2403.04] Stephen: It was thirty dollars.
[2404.6] Stephen: And that's not really a heck of an outlay.
[2407.88] Stephen: So I thought I'd just give it a shot.
[2409.72] Stephen: Seems pretty good.
[2411.0] Curry: Nice.
[2412.52] Curry: Because aside from Steven managing to get out for a little flight, I don't think anybody
[2416.16] Curry: else has managed it because the weather here is atrocious.
[2418.96] Curry: It's just awful.
[2420.88] Curry: I'm still I'm sat here with wings on the floor waiting to go and try them.
[2425.48] Curry: But even though it's not raining tomorrow, the wind's saying 10 to 12 mile an hour, which
[2431.56] Curry: wouldn't be so bad until you get onto the the sea or the sea area where I am with two
[2438.6] Curry: coastal being Jack.
[2439.96] Curry: And that ups the wind again and again.
[2442.56] Curry: You really it's no fun trying to make wings in high, high wind because it's like, oh, is
[2448.28] Curry: it is it completely shaking around or is it just blowing around in the girl?
[2451.52] Curry: Steven, have you built your wing yet?
[2453.72] Curry: Just thinking about that.
[2454.68] Stephen: You've had it in the box down there.
[2457.12] Stephen: I remember it's still down there and I'm I'm still exhausted.
[2461.24] Stephen: And I've got a backlog of stuff on there that I need to get rid of.
[2464.64] Stephen: It hasn't got any cleaner back there.
[2467.64] Stephen: Yeah, I'm buying a new 3D printer and then I'll try and tidy the desk.
[2473.32] Stephen: It's going to tidy the place up.
[2474.76] Stephen: I don't know.
[2476.16] Stephen: I've got two quads to build so I can actually clear the desk and probably a woop to update.
[2482.4] Stephen: And when I've built the two five inches and I built the woop and going to get onto the
[2488.6] Stephen: plane, I know I want to do it.
[2491.0] Stephen: It's just I can't just carry on putting on top of piles of other because it's it's
[2496.64] Stephen: untenable. I need a flat surface to work on.
[2499.36] Stephen: It's getting out of control.
[2501.96] Jack: I cleared my desk and it lasted the whole of five minutes.
[2507.2] Jack: And I've been trying to do those SH connectors.
[2512.8] Jack: I'm so annoyed that I can't crimp them myself.
[2517.0] Stephen: Why don't you just what's killing you from soldering?
[2521.52] Stephen: Do you need the JSC on the.
[2523.92] Jack: Yeah, I just want to do it and it'd be nice.
[2528.4] Stephen: Yeah, I mean, I've fully put my hand up and say I'm weak and incapable.
[2532.92] Stephen: And I just bought a whole load on AliExpress, got the nice ones with a silicon wire, said
[2538.12] Stephen: like, yeah, ship a bundle of them to me for like three quid or something.
[2542.6] Jack: I might need that link for me.
[2544.96] Jack: Can you get different colors?
[2548.48] Stephen: I mean, the wires are all different colors so you can re-pin them to get the color order
[2552.48] Stephen: that you want. But yeah, they do like three pin, four pin, five pin, six pin, seven,
[2558.16] Jack: eight. I have many on my go for the old eight pin and just order a load of them.
[2565.43] Jack: Would you like me to build it for you, Stephen?
[2568.11] Jack: Caroline Taylor to the rescue.
[2571.23] Jack: No, no, no, that is professional built services for me.
[2576.23] Stephen: It's just like mental energy and stuff.
[2579.23] Stephen: I did a conference for a couple of days this week and just going to get a drink and just
[2583.51] Stephen: a bit knackered, a bit knackered.
[2585.91] Stephen: We do have some robot nightmare fuel stories that we could run through, I guess, if anyone's
[2592.31] Stephen: interested in robot nightmare fuel.
[2595.47] Jack: What about Frank's post?
[2597.71] Jack: Do you remember?
[2599.75] Stephen: There's Frank's post as well, but I was going to get the Doom of Mankind out of the way
[2604.23] Stephen: first.
[2604.87] Stephen: OK, go for it.
[2605.95] Stephen: Go, go, go.
[2606.47] Stephen: Right. So to start with, on the Doom of Mankind, we have Redcat appointing a military
[2612.15] Stephen: advisor. Yeah, so they're giving up to crush us beneath their iron boots.
[2619.79] Stephen: This Mary Beth Long with an extensive resume and long list of accomplishments.
[2626.51] Stephen: Basically a defense, a defense advisor, and she's now on the board of Redcat.
[2632.63] Stephen: So they're clearly showing an interest there.
[2634.99] Stephen: They're also based out of Puerto Rico, which I didn't realize.
[2637.83] Stephen: I thought they were a U.S. company, but apparently not.
[2642.15] Stephen: Yeah, and then there's.
[2643.83] Stephen: There's Puerto Rico, Canada, U.S.
[2645.63] Stephen: Technically, I thought it was you could get in and out of the country, isn't it?
[2652.64] Stephen: I don't know.
[2654.0] Stephen: It's not a state, is it?
[2655.2] Curry: It's not a state in America.
[2656.48] Curry: It's not a state.
[2658.0] Curry: I don't know.
[2658.96] Curry: I went there once.
[2659.68] Curry: I don't remember having much immigration stuff going on, that's all.
[2664.72] Stephen: Who knows?
[2666.44] Stephen: Yeah, then there was some other drone systems that appeared on.
[2672.36] Stephen: I can't remember where I found these, but just absolute nightmarish stuff.
[2677.04] Stephen: They there's an Israeli company that has decided to attach explosives to racing
[2682.48] Stephen: drones because that's how you make friends and endear yourself to the world at large.
[2687.84] Stephen: And they're looking to sell this kind of system of battlefield technology where they
[2694.36] Stephen: take a racing drone with a camera and an NVIDIA Jetson on it and then sort of fly
[2701.12] Stephen: around and remotely detonate stuff.
[2707.97] Curry: Oh, that's right.
[2708.61] Curry: This is this is the video we'll watch because I remember it.
[2713.09] Curry: It sort of went around and deciding what was friend or foe, but they made a big
[2716.65] Curry: point as there was this operator who would then say, oh, yeah, not just a robot.
[2722.09] Stephen: No, no, I mean, because it's like, yeah, let's just hand that over to the robot
[2726.09] Curry: to to decide who's a friendly or not.
[2728.81] Stephen: The robot's able to identify targets and say which are hostile.
[2732.29] Stephen: But the robot is definitely not exploding or killing anyone automatically.
[2736.65] Stephen: No, of course not.
[2737.41] Stephen: There has to be a big green button that the operator presses.
[2740.61] Stephen: Look, oh, that's a gun.
[2742.65] Stephen: That's a person.
[2743.89] Stephen: They're hostile because we don't know them.
[2746.01] Stephen: So there must be bad guys or children or bad children or something.
[2750.33] Stephen: And anyway, so they send the drone in and it sort of flies up behind the guy and
[2755.17] Stephen: then explodifies when they are when someone presses a big green die button.
[2760.17] Stephen: And then you can send that into houses and you can kill whoever's in the house.
[2764.61] Stephen: We have signals, no worries.
[2767.25] Stephen: Yeah, no problem.
[2768.17] Stephen: It's doing it real time.
[2769.49] Stephen: FBV through concrete and it's flying around with like an Nvidia Jetson on top
[2774.29] Stephen: on a five inch racing drone, and we all know that like totally works.
[2777.41] Stephen: And that's fine.
[2778.09] Stephen: I kind of like the thing in the video.
[2779.81] Curry: I just disclosed it to this bit where it's like, oh, no, it's a door.
[2783.41] Curry: Let's let's become a booby trap instead because ambush mode, as they call it,
[2788.69] Curry: not like working essentially as a land mine.
[2791.13] Stephen: And you notice someone had to press the button there as well, because it's
[2793.57] Stephen: definitely not just a robot killing machine.
[2796.01] Stephen: It's it's teleoperated killing machine.
[2798.33] Stephen: And that makes it absolutely cool.
[2800.81] Stephen: Yeah. Yeah.
[2802.77] Stephen: So there's that.
[2804.09] Stephen: And then there's a whole bunch of other terrible, terrible things that they're
[2807.57] Stephen: doing, which involve having a big base as a wheeled vehicle.
[2813.33] Stephen: They can launch things off.
[2814.57] Stephen: And then there is a giant kind of octocopter that can provide battlefield
[2819.29] Stephen: support. They're claiming it's
[2824.61] Stephen: 294 by 294 meldrone.
[2829.65] Stephen: And it's got a maximum takeoff weight of one point two five kilos, which is is
[2834.93] Stephen: hefty. That's pretty running in an eighteen hundred Ma four cell.
[2842.27] Stephen: So that's a lot of battery.
[2843.79] Curry: How long are they claiming it's going to be in the air?
[2845.95] Curry: Because for a drone that size, that heavy with that size battery,
[2850.75] Curry: it's like two to three minutes max strikes me.
[2854.35] Stephen: Yeah. A four S eighteen hundred is a chunk of a battery.
[2858.23] Stephen: And it's got the Jetson stuck on top of it as well.
[2861.35] Jack: I can't get they've got a claymore mode.
[2866.47] Jack: Yeah. And the wide angle of the lens as if it's going to worry about,
[2873.67] Jack: you know, can I have the mission to explode?
[2877.87] Jack: Right. Oh, geez.
[2879.95] Curry: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[2881.71] Curry: It sounds.
[2884.03] Curry: I was just going to say, I like the fact that the factor explodes instead of having
[2888.11] Curry: some sort of deadly projectile.
[2889.67] Curry: It could shoot people with like a gun.
[2892.31] Curry: It seems like like DGI came out with this one.
[2894.67] Curry: It's like not many people are buying our death drones.
[2897.03] Curry: What should we do?
[2897.95] Curry: Have them explode.
[2899.15] Curry: And every time it explodes, we have to send them a new one.
[2901.75] Curry: Brilliant. Yeah.
[2904.35] Stephen: The fact that it can both identify targets and also can explode,
[2909.51] Stephen: but they're trying to make the point that it doesn't in any way do both.
[2914.03] Stephen: Like there's no way it would identify a target or to explode itself.
[2917.47] Stephen: Just makes it look like those are two wires that someone only has to twist
[2921.59] Stephen: together with a few lines of code.
[2923.39] Curry: I like the fact that you can identify hostile and friendly,
[2927.35] Curry: even though they're wearing the same camo as well.
[2929.51] Curry: It's like, yeah, this is this is our guy for sure.
[2932.11] Curry: Don't explode him.
[2933.51] Curry: Yeah. Sketch. Very sketchy.
[2936.59] Jack: Well, our lovely Lord of Master, Andrew,
[2941.19] Jack: Andrew Frank, who we miss dearly, sent us this
[2946.43] Jack: Hackaday article dated November 24th, 2022.
[2952.67] Jack: Start your engines.
[2954.23] Jack: The FPV contest begins now.
[2957.67] Jack: Hackaday and DigiKey presents FPV contest.
[2963.15] Jack: So basically, they want to see how our builds,
[2968.67] Jack: if it's remote controlled and you feel like you're in the pilot seat, it's FPV.
[2974.31] Jack: So they kind of, you know, they show in the whole like
[2978.15] Jack: is that the Tesla Assamo bot thing in a in the seat of a car with a camera?
[2985.43] Stephen: Now, this isn't just about building it.
[2988.51] Stephen: They specifically emphasize what they want is for you to create a hackaday project
[2993.11] Stephen: page, and they're not just looking at the end result.
[2996.07] Stephen: They want to get all the documentation so that someone
[3000.19] Stephen: walking into an electronics store could replicate it and build their own version.
[3004.99] Stephen: The emphasis is on documenting it and enabling others to copy what you've done.
[3009.47] Stephen: So it's all about taking photos of the bills, listing your bill of materials.
[3015.47] Stephen: Showing wide diagrams.
[3017.47] Stephen: Yeah, all of that.
[3020.71] Stephen: We're ready. Oh, oh, oh, it's the height of technology.
[3025.91] Stephen: Hang on this.
[3027.39] Stephen: There you go.
[3028.59] Curry: Well, I just put this camera on.
[3030.79] Stephen: Are you saying anyone could make one of these glorious robots?
[3035.11] Stephen: Really? Anyone?
[3037.79] Curry: Yeah, well, I mean, it's advanced.
[3040.79] Curry: I've documented it, but it's possible.
[3043.87] Stephen: It is possible. Dream big drive it up to people and it may or may not explode.
[3048.39] Stephen: It just depends on the quality of life you're using.
[3051.03] Curry: Yeah, I mean, the best thing about this, as far as exploding goes,
[3054.71] Curry: is because it's built of cardboard, it won't just explode.
[3058.03] Curry: It has potential to start a fire as well.
[3061.55] Stephen: You've really thought ahead. I like that. Yeah.
[3065.23] Curry: Just need to document it now.
[3068.79] Stephen: Perhaps you could document it on itself.
[3071.15] Stephen: I mean, it is. It is a right of all material.
[3075.07] Jack: It's true. It's a stormtrooper.
[3077.39] Jack: I'm sorry. Is it a stormtrooper?
[3081.43] Stephen: A stormtrooper with its head taken off.
[3086.87] Stephen: I thought you could get a Lego stormtrooper's head
[3089.19] Stephen: without the rest of a stormtrooper now.
[3091.31] Stephen: What's that about? It's a bit odd.
[3095.87] Curry: Where do you buy just Lego heads?
[3097.55] Curry: Is there a Lego head store?
[3099.79] Jack: Maybe if you're an Ewok at the end of the.
[3102.79] Jack: Like a giant statue of a head.
[3105.07] Curry: They do have if you've been to a Lego store and if you go there,
[3108.99] Curry: you will come out crying because it's all very expensive.
[3111.87] Curry: They do have these big buckets.
[3113.31] Curry: You sort of get this thing.
[3114.67] Curry: And if you pay a money, you can fill it with bits and pieces from everywhere.
[3118.79] Curry: I don't know if there's a bit with just Lego figures in that you can like,
[3121.47] Curry: oh, just have this stormtrooper head.
[3123.03] Curry: Just lots and lots of stormtrooper heads or something like that.
[3129.28] Stephen: Piles of heads. That'd be quite good fun.
[3134.54] Stephen: Yeah, Lego has become a strangely premium item.
[3137.42] Stephen: I remember it used to just be everywhere.
[3139.74] Stephen: Bits of Lego around the house.
[3141.18] Stephen: Everyone had piles of Lego.
[3143.14] Stephen: And now it's somehow this luxury toy with fast, really expensive collector's sets.
[3150.38] Curry: When did that happen?
[3151.18] Curry: I think Lego figured out that actually the people that buy Lego sets
[3155.26] Curry: are people of our age who like to reminisce about, isn't it fun to build?
[3159.58] Curry: And thus, oh, we can charge them 500 pounds to build a set of Ghostbusters
[3164.18] Curry: or Millennium Falcon, guilty as charged.
[3167.1] Curry: And stuff like that.
[3170.18] Curry: But yeah, and it's interesting, because whenever I hear you talk about like Lego
[3173.98] Curry: all over the place, it makes me think of Americans and the fact they can't.
[3178.7] Curry: They have to pluralise Lego somehow, even though it's already plural.
[3181.86] Curry: Yeah, Lego is pick up your Legos.
[3184.62] Curry: Just Lego. Come on, get it right.
[3186.5] Curry: It's it makes me very angry.
[3188.74] Curry: It's one of the many things through the day that I start shouting and renting.
[3192.5] Curry: Divided by a common language.
[3195.18] Stephen: Yeah, I tend to do that with other words
[3198.66] Stephen: where the plural form is the same as the single form or just it's a trend.
[3204.46] Stephen: Well, mathematic is the strict one.
[3207.58] Stephen: I mean, we're both wrong in that regard, really.
[3211.06] Curry: Well, that's when they take the plural off.
[3212.54] Curry: We say it's maths and they say math.
[3216.3] Jack: Weird. I just can't get over capillary instead of capillary.
[3224.54] Curry: This is what they're trying to say.
[3225.94] Jack: That is the worst.
[3228.74] Jack: But I'm like, oh,
[3231.5] Stephen: I asked an Australian about it sometime as well.
[3233.98] Stephen: Like they've got an interesting take on on both the UK and the US.
[3239.1] Stephen: Why would they say?
[3241.74] Stephen: I think they're both they think we're both idiots,
[3245.46] Stephen: more or less.
[3248.02] Stephen: But in a good natured way.
[3250.1] Curry: Oh, not aluminum.
[3254.22] Jack: To be fair, the guy, the guy, yeah, soldering.
[3260.66] Stephen: Who's here?
[3261.38] Stephen: They can't even come from Anthony.
[3264.66] Stephen: It's Anthony.
[3265.62] Stephen: It's always been Anthony like Antonius.
[3268.46] Stephen: And they can't say Graham either.
[3271.14] Stephen: Rahm.
[3272.7] Curry: Rahm. Hey, can you get those Graham crackers?
[3275.98] Jack: Reese, Reese.
[3277.34] Jack: They can't handle either.
[3279.46] Jack: Oh, anyway, enough enough xenophobia today.
[3283.46] Stephen: Yeah, this one last thing that actually does taste of sick.
[3288.38] Curry: It's official.
[3289.78] Stephen: What does it all Hershey's?
[3290.98] Stephen: Yeah, Hershey's.
[3292.14] Curry: It's actually got an ingredient in it that tastes of that,
[3294.46] Curry: but they're so used to it.
[3295.98] Stephen: They don't pasteurize the milk.
[3297.74] Stephen: Oh, what is it?
[3299.1] Stephen: It's something about the milk where they've got to use.
[3302.1] Stephen: It was heat treated milk or something.
[3304.34] Curry: Yeah, this guy came up with whoever invented Hershey's
[3307.1] Curry: came up with this way of not pasteurizing milk
[3310.3] Curry: and doing something else to it to make it taste like milk
[3312.74] Curry: or something and added that to chocolate.
[3315.58] Curry: And that ended up being tasting like sick to everybody
[3318.98] Curry: that's not American, because they're used to the idea
[3321.58] Curry: of chocolate tastes like that.
[3323.62] Stephen: It's horrible, that stuff.
[3324.74] Stephen: Yeah. Yeah.
[3327.18] Curry: Sorry. Sorry. Our friends in the US.
[3329.46] Stephen: But your chocolate is terrible.
[3331.46] Curry: Good news. In Canada, it's mainly UK chocolate.
[3334.82] Stephen: Yeah, Canada.
[3336.54] Curry: That's why they're so happy.
[3338.5] Stephen: Well, they bought Nestle, didn't they?
[3340.58] Stephen: Nestle, the Canadian part of Kraft Foods, aren't they?
[3343.7] Stephen: And they bought cabras.
[3347.54] Stephen: Maybe. Yeah, the cabras are slowly changing their recipe.
[3352.58] Stephen: Oh, look who we've got here.
[3354.46] Stephen: Duh, duh, duh, duh, duh.
[3356.54] Stephen: Oh, Max.
[3357.5] Stephen: This is Min.
[3359.1] Stephen: This is Min.
[3360.3] Curry: To name your cats after functions, Max and Min.
[3363.54] Stephen: Min and Max. Yeah, absolutely.
[3365.5] Stephen: That's why they're called that.
[3366.94] Stephen: One's little and the other one's big.
[3368.9] Stephen: So we've got Min Cat and Max Cat.
[3373.19] Stephen: Do you not notice that?
[3374.79] Stephen: It's Poppy.
[3376.19] Stephen: Do you see this cat?
[3377.11] Curry: Do you see the way she's not scratching
[3379.03] Curry: or he's not scratching and being an obnoxious cat?
[3382.47] Stephen: Yeah, she's a lovely little cat.
[3383.91] Stephen: She likes being snuggled,
[3385.51] Stephen: but she does try and lick my wife's eyeballs
[3389.27] Stephen: when she's sleeping, which scares the snot out of her.
[3395.35] Stephen: Don't do this to me, do you?
[3396.83] Stephen: You're just painfully affectionate.
[3399.75] Jack: How are they enjoying the Christmas treats that I sent?
[3408.87] Stephen: Oh, we haven't started them
[3410.27] Stephen: because it's not time for Advent calendars,
[3412.27] Stephen: but it will be imminently.
[3414.19] Stephen: So we're going to start them at the start of December.
[3418.15] Stephen: Can I pick you up and show you to the world at large again?
[3420.67] Stephen: Or will you be against that?
[3423.39] Stephen: Are you going to be a shy cat?
[3426.94] Curry: It's quite evident it hasn't been much flying with any of us.
[3430.18] Curry: It's not discovered.
[3431.62] Stephen: Cats, chocolate.
[3433.02] Stephen: Cats, cats, chocolate, chocolate, cats.
[3436.26] Curry: Yeah, chocolate.
[3438.22] Stephen: I upgraded a bunch of radio stuff and sent it to Jack
[3441.34] Stephen: and then just realized the Express LRS
[3444.02] Stephen: accidentally had some light snafu on the latest version.
[3447.38] Stephen: So I might have shipped Jack some,
[3449.58] Stephen: maybe less than entirely working equipment.
[3452.1] Stephen: I think I tested it just before I sent it,
[3454.18] Stephen: but I did put my latest 3.10 version on.
[3457.66] Curry: I'd flown on 3.1 as well, and it was absolutely fine.
[3461.38] Curry: And it just seems to be certain things aren't good,
[3464.62] Curry: but yeah, might want to downgrade or upgrade
[3468.62] Curry: when they push the next one out.
[3470.14] Stephen: I think if it flashes, it's fine,
[3472.22] Stephen: but what you can get is a situation where you flash it
[3475.86] Stephen: and it forgets the per device config.
[3477.94] Stephen: It forgets what pin's supposed to be connected
[3479.86] Stephen: to what inside the module,
[3481.34] Stephen: which means you have to get out your FTDI adapter
[3484.22] Stephen: and reflash.
[3485.34] Stephen: But I'm so used to just randomly grabbing the FTDI
[3488.9] Stephen: and flashing anyway.
[3490.94] Stephen: I think I might have actually got that situation
[3493.18] Stephen: with one of the modules and I just plugged in a USB
[3495.46] Stephen: and reflashed it without thinking for more than a second.
[3498.34] Stephen: So yeah, it's fine.
[3501.78] Jack: The joys of sticking in Wi-Fi mode.
[3506.06] Jack: Yeah.
[3506.9] Jack: Lovely Lee sent me the ELRS micro RF
[3512.82] Jack: and it is the one watt version,
[3515.82] Jack: which I'm not even sure we're allowed to use in this country.
[3519.46] Curry: I thought the white one was 500.
[3521.9] Stephen: Yeah, he's put it in the wrong box, mate.
[3523.38] Stephen: The white one's 500 milliwatt.
[3525.06] Stephen: He's put it in the same box.
[3526.66] Curry: The 500.
[3528.34] Stephen: The one watt one's black.
[3533.42] Stephen: He's trying to wind you up, mate.
[3534.82] Stephen: He's like, I've got the one watt one now with the backpack.
[3537.34] Stephen: I'll send Jack the pussy one.
[3538.86] Curry: No, that's in the minnow one.
[3540.18] Stephen: I should know because that's what I did.
[3543.02] Curry: It looks the same, but it's black.
[3549.06] Stephen: It works fine.
[3549.9] Stephen: It's just the whole backpack thing that it doesn't have.
[3553.62] Stephen: I've yet to take mine above 250 milliwatt anyway.
[3556.74] Curry: So are we, anybody planning to get out in the next week?
[3560.66] Curry: What have we got to fly, test, do anything?
[3565.22] Jack: I can now, if I could be asked,
[3568.58] Jack: I can now fly the retro quads.
[3572.9] Jack: I just need to plug in and set the VTX thing
[3577.78] Jack: and put the receiver somewhere.
[3580.54] Jack: But this is, in theory, good to go.
[3586.8] Stephen: Nice, I might do some flying.
[3590.64] Stephen: You just reminded me, I've got yet another build.
[3592.68] Stephen: I've got two, five inches I was going to build.
[3595.76] Stephen: My four inch also got cream cracker
[3597.88] Stephen: towards the end of the summer.
[3599.36] Stephen: And I had an H7AIO I was going to put in there.
[3602.68] Stephen: I was humming and auring about getting walks now,
[3605.24] Stephen: but I think honestly, I'm just not buying it.
[3608.28] Stephen: It's not good enough compared to the original DJI stuff.
[3613.36] Stephen: It's a little bit better.
[3614.96] Stephen: And I've got more than a couple of DJI air units.
[3619.04] Stephen: So don't really want to carry around another set of goggles.
[3625.03] Curry: That would be a pain to take two quads out
[3627.19] Curry: with two different sets of goggles, wouldn't it?
[3629.99] Stephen: Yeah, it's bad enough managing the analog stuff.
[3633.99] Stephen: And it's not light enough that it can go all the way down
[3636.43] Stephen: to like a 65 mile whoop,
[3638.59] Stephen: despite the fact people do insist on putting it on whoops.
[3641.71] Stephen: And they're like, yeah, I've built a 65 mile whoop.
[3644.55] Stephen: The flight time's like 90 seconds
[3646.75] Stephen: and the battery's come down puffed.
[3649.47] Jack: I bought that a little mini receiver,
[3654.95] Jack: you know, the EP one or whatever.
[3660.35] Jack: And I want to add that to my brushed whoop,
[3665.03] Jack: but I cannot find the data on it anywhere.
[3669.23] Stephen: Data on what?
[3670.55] Stephen: On which pin switch?
[3672.67] Jack: You've got to cut a trace for the built-in diversity module.
[3679.11] Jack: It's the B-brain light.
[3682.83] Jack: Oh, God, the B-brain stuff, no.
[3685.55] Jack: Yeah, and then I've got to find,
[3687.91] Jack: you know, like hook it up to the UART too.
[3691.51] Jack: And they don't sell it anymore.
[3693.19] Jack: And the page with the info
[3694.63] Jack: isn't there on the website anymore.
[3697.19] Jack: And I've literally just got Reddit posts of...
[3702.95] Stephen: Yeah, that B-brain stuff, it's interesting what they do.
[3706.71] Stephen: But they don't open source it
[3708.55] Stephen: because they're worried about cloners,
[3710.11] Stephen: but they have an MCU that they use
[3713.19] Stephen: instead of the mega 87456 that everyone else uses for OSD.
[3719.83] Stephen: They don't have one of those.
[3721.23] Stephen: They do it all in software, which is cool,
[3724.39] Stephen: but it means that you have to use
[3726.11] Stephen: their software releases for everything.
[3727.91] Stephen: And the documentation is kind of not always available.
[3732.99] Stephen: It's a bit annoying.
[3734.83] Jack: Yeah, don't know how I feel about it.
[3738.07] Stephen: That's kind of what I ended up with, Brian,
[3740.47] Stephen: like having HD zero and thinking,
[3742.95] Stephen: oh, this is cool.
[3743.95] Stephen: And then flying the DJI stuff.
[3746.83] Stephen: And yeah, DJI whore as well.
[3753.43] Jack: Bunch of hoes.
[3754.63] Jack: All right, is that all we got time for?
[3757.71] Jack: It's pretty much it.
[3759.07] Stephen: He's got to go and watch celebrities
[3760.95] Stephen: die of food poisoning now.
[3762.75] Jack: Oh, you've been listening to Lectro now.
[3765.47] Jack: We're live on YouTube, 8 p.m. till 9 p.m. UK time.
[3771.55] Jack: If you do want to come and say hello,
[3774.91] Jack: we're often hanging out in the Discord.
[3778.11] Jack: The link is on our website, lectroanout.com.
[3781.87] Jack: You can also purchase some merchandise
[3785.03] Jack: from Asperger, if you wish.
[3788.71] Jack: You've been joined by everyone's favorite curry kitten.
[3792.43] Curry: Good night.
[3793.83] Jack: The man with the lovely mustache
[3796.79] Jack: and the owner of Max and Min.
[3799.59] Jack: Good night and goodbye.
[3801.55] Jack: And I have the uni.
[3803.55] Jack: Bright to the fly.
[3805.11] Jack: Hit the like button, subscribe and message Tony.
[3811.31] Jack: Tell him he is a dog-bother.
[3815.67] Jack: Thank you, good night.
[3817.87] Jack: Good night.
[3819.19] Curry: Telemetry lost.
