Massive thank you to. [14.0] Jack: Carlos Campos. [16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner. [18.0] Stephen: Sam Dahmer. On with the show. [21.0] Curry: Let's Drone Out now. [23.0] Stephen: Hello and welcome to Let's Drone Out. [55.35] Stephen: You're joined tonight by everyone's favourite curry kitten. [60.35] Stephen: Hello. [61.35] Stephen: Bright until I fly, Jack. [63.35] Jack: Everyone's favourite liability. How's it going? [67.35] Stephen: And myself, Stephen. Hello, everyone. Hello to our lovely patrons keeping us on the airwaves or whatever the electronic wire equivalent of that is. [77.35] Curry: How's it going, Jack? [79.35] Curry: How's your day? How's your week? What's going on? [83.35] Curry: I'm very tired. OK. [86.35] Stephen: He's blue, quite literally, for all of your viewers. Jack is now blue. [91.35] Stephen: There you go. Oh, no, turn it down again. Jesus. [94.35] Stephen: Too much, Jack. Oh, we don't need that much, Jack. [98.35] Jack: That better? That's better. [101.35] Jack: There you go. [102.35] Stephen: How did the soldering go, mate? You were putting bits and bobs together, repairing burnt traces, all this. [108.35] Jack: I don't. No, I crimped. I crimped last night and added a current. [116.35] Jack: Didn't we all? [117.35] Jack: Yeah, I did. I did a current sensor. [122.35] Jack: And that's about it, really. That's as far as I got. [125.35] Jack: And I moved some stuff into a drawer, but that's about it. [129.35] Jack: The desk still looks like a bombsite. [133.35] Jack: And I didn't go to bed till about, well, I tried to go to bed about three and then probably didn't get to sleep till about four. [143.35] Jack: So I'm very tired and not with it. [147.35] Stephen: Oh, in that case, we should probably quickly follow the direction the chat's taking and jump on Curry's review of the Boxer, [156.35] Stephen: this new radio from Radiomaster, which the chat is all lit up over. [161.35] Curry: I think that's probably because you couldn't go on YouTube if you were subscribed to a couple of drone channels without seeing the word Radiomaster Boxer in every single corner. [170.35] Curry: Because, of course, everybody gets these things and we're told nobody say anything until December the 15th at GMT plus eight, six o'clock, which means 10 a.m. [183.35] Curry: And everything suddenly going bing, which I think it kind of works quite well for Radiomaster because everybody knows that as a Radiomaster product going, I don't know if people get a bit fed up with too much at once. [198.35] Curry: I mean, you can at least get a lot of different opinions on it. [201.35] Curry: And if someone misses something, then another person's got it. But it's a nice looking radio. [206.35] Curry: As you probably noticed, from my point of view, I didn't fly what I call properly because it's cold outside. [212.35] Curry: Ironically, I'm going to go tomorrow, which is cold. [215.35] Stephen: You may not be aware how mild the weather is here normally. [219.35] Stephen: And we've had proper snow like there is ice everywhere right now. [223.35] Stephen: It is leg breaking ville all over London. [226.35] Curry: The problem is, just a few weeks ago, it was really, really mild. [230.35] Curry: It was like 12, 16 degrees. [233.35] Curry: And then just suddenly winter popped in without any warning. [237.35] Curry: There wasn't a gradual slope. [239.35] Curry: You're now cold and very wet. [241.35] Curry: And so, yeah, I just did a bit of a woot flight and a little car drive. [247.35] Curry: And I did not want to go to the very wet field. [250.35] Stephen: Well, fundamentally, you've got the gimbals out of another radio. [254.35] Stephen: The module that's identical to other radios, apart from the power output, everyone knows Edge TX. [260.35] Stephen: So it's really just the sum of its parts, I guess, isn't it? [262.35] Stephen: You really talk about the ergonomics of the chassis and that's most of it, right? [267.35] Curry: Yeah, and I think people are saying, oh, no, RadioMaster keeps releasing another radio. [273.35] Curry: What are we going to do with this? [274.35] Curry: I think RadioMaster is just trying to cover every single base. [277.35] Curry: It's kind of like you want the great big heavy block. [280.35] Curry: There's your TX-16. [282.35] Curry: You like the game controller. [283.35] Curry: There's your Zorro. [285.35] Curry: And then you've got small hands, the ladies perhaps. [289.35] Curry: They've got the TX-12. [290.35] Curry: And then you've got sort of this new middle of the range thing. [292.35] Curry: I think it's obviously very, very close to the Mambo. [296.35] Curry: But it's kind of different feeling than the others. [301.35] Curry: But you kind of have to hold them all and say, I like this one. [304.35] Curry: I like the way this feels and learning where the switches are. [307.35] Stephen: Is it different feeling because of no switches on top? [309.35] Stephen: Because most radios go for switches on the top side. [313.35] Stephen: And this has followed that Mambo design, your switches on the face, but clean on the top side. [318.35] Stephen: That's right. [319.35] Curry: So I kind of think this is the ultimate radio for putting in your backpack because it's really difficult to damage it. [325.35] Curry: It's got nothing on the sides. [327.35] Curry: It's got a nice gimbal protector that covers the switches. [331.35] Curry: But yeah, I was a little bit concerned that especially people that pinch might have issues getting to the switches. [337.35] Curry: But I did notice that when I did my bit of indoor flying, the immediate thing I did was crash and fall down the stairs. [343.35] Curry: And then without thinking about it, I just disarmed, went into turtle mode, lift it, went back, and it was just second nature. [353.35] Curry: So it obviously wasn't that hard to find the switches. [357.35] Curry: But I kind of like the six position thing as well. [360.35] Curry: I've never had that. [361.35] Curry: But that's something where, as I said, you kind of, you want to put your non-critical modes on there [368.35] Curry: because switches are very obvious where your button presses. [371.35] Curry: You have to sort of count along and say, I think this is heading holder. [375.35] Curry: I wouldn't put an arm switch on there. [377.35] Curry: Screw it up. [378.35] Stephen: I've experimented with using that for angle, acro, and 3D mode in the past. [384.35] Stephen: You never really have six unless you're running RGU, I guess. [388.35] Stephen: It's an interesting thing to use. [390.35] Curry: I now have something that you might pop it on because you've got a lot of different modes to use. [394.35] Curry: But yeah, I think the problem with RGU Pilot is they only allow a single channel for your mode. [400.35] Curry: And you've got a lot of very different modes in RGU Pilot. [403.35] Curry: Something where you can put a lot of switches or positions on one channel is quite useful. [408.35] Stephen: It's nice. [409.35] Stephen: The thing that bugs me about it in regular use is obviously a physical three position [415.35] Stephen: stays where it is when you switch the radio on and off. [419.35] Stephen: That doesn't. [421.35] Stephen: So if you switch to a flying mode that isn't that first position, [425.35] Stephen: you turn the radio off and turn it on again, it goes to the first position. [430.35] Stephen: So you need to make sure the one you always want to use by default is in position number one [434.35] Stephen: because it will just switch itself on to that when you power the radio on. [437.35] Stephen: Yeah, I guess so. [438.35] Curry: But I have my radio set up by default. [442.35] Curry: So if there's any switch that's not in the default position, it alarms me and says, [447.35] Curry: you know, switch essay is not a zero, turn it back. [451.35] Curry: So I generally have the sort of thing where I have to put all my switches back. [454.35] Curry: So it's not like accidentally in the wrong mode or armed or something like that. [458.35] Stephen: Yeah, I mean, I have a two position arm, so I can't accidentally arm stuff. [465.76] Stephen: So I need to like have a momentary and a switch. [468.76] Stephen: And otherwise, it's a logical switch. [470.76] Stephen: It doesn't re-enable. [471.76] Stephen: So you switch off and on again. [472.76] Stephen: The one thing I was wondering is about the buttons on the top. [476.76] Stephen: You said that they're a little bit scratchy. [481.76] Stephen: Do you think they're good for arming or would you be worried about using the right? [484.76] Curry: I think so. [485.76] Stephen: Let me grab it. [487.76] Stephen: While Kerry's getting that, I was just going to throw it to you, Jack, actually. [491.76] Stephen: But for a little elaboration, I had the B-traffic light radio and that's got push buttons. [497.76] Stephen: And I found that they would kind of trigger accidentally and then it armed for a fraction [502.76] Stephen: of a second and disarm. [503.76] Stephen: So, Jack, did you did you find that on the B-traffic UV light radio three? [509.76] Jack: I haven't. [510.76] Jack: Don't forget, I've only used that for the SIM. [513.76] Jack: I haven't set it up. [516.76] Jack: Only last night did I flash, update the internal module with the virtual comport. [526.76] Jack: So it's on 3.1.1. [529.76] Jack: And when I first got the radio, I'm throttle, aileron, elevator, rudder, and you had a different order. [539.76] Jack: So I had to change that out because I kept running into a mix match error, which I think [551.76] Jack: you've got, I was trying to painless and you sent me, and this is painless's module. [562.76] Jack: Funny enough, I phoned painless today and he helped me with the channel five arm thing [571.76] Jack: because I use idle up. [572.76] Jack: Oh, right. [573.76] Jack: So I need a mid position. [575.76] Jack: So I've got to figure out how to do that in curve. [577.76] Jack: But at the moment, I've got an override. [580.76] Jack: But that's going off topic. [581.76] Stephen: You have a mid position for arming. [583.76] Jack: Yeah. [584.76] Jack: So it's hit it once and it just idles. [588.76] Jack: It just ticks over motor spinning. [590.76] Jack: But the gyro is not enabled. [593.76] Jack: And then another one up. [595.76] Jack: It's diff sent to 17 and that enables the gyro and that gives me air mode. [603.76] Jack: It's because I'm older. [607.76] Curry: Yeah. [608.76] Curry: Who uses idle up on a quad? [609.76] Jack: I know. [610.76] Jack: I'm sorry. [611.76] Jack: I'm not. [612.76] Jack: I'm not. [613.76] Curry: You could just remove that middle position and you wouldn't. [616.76] Curry: I might want to fly around with no gyro. [618.76] Curry: So I'm out of control all the time. [620.76] Stephen: I haven't trusted that gyro anyway. [622.76] Stephen: I think my sense of balance is superior. [625.76] Jack: Well, the middle mode is what I cast as potato mode because if you drop throttle to zero. [633.76] Jack: It just sounds like liability mode. [636.76] Jack: Well, the problem is I had. [639.76] Jack: Do you remember the back in the day with the whole like you know when it used to like bounce and I came in once close and it bounced and it freaked the gyro out and it sent it hurtling towards me and my mate and it cut his arm. [661.04] Curry: I tell you why my quads don't bounce. [664.04] Curry: And that's because I have air mode on the switch. [667.04] Curry: When I'm coming into landing, air mode goes off. [670.04] Curry: I come down and I drop the throttle. [672.04] Stephen: I tell you why my quads don't bounce and I throw my quads at my feet. [676.04] Stephen: I just hit the ground and disarm. [679.04] Stephen: Why would you like you hit the ground, you disarm and you don't like a couple of inches off the ground and just go doof. [688.04] Stephen: And it's done. [689.04] Stephen: I know. [690.04] Curry: I mean, if you go in that direction before you know it, you'll be flying backwards into a hill in no time. [696.04] Jack: I know. [698.04] Jack: I will. [699.04] Jack: I will admit it's just, I don't know, faster than you think. [705.04] Jack: I don't know. [710.04] Jack: I know. [711.04] Jack: I don't really have a leg to stand on. [713.04] Jack: I'm sorry. [714.04] Curry: The answer to that question, by the way. [717.04] Curry: The buttons. [718.04] Curry: The buttons do have a texture on them. [720.04] Curry: I find the buttons actually more straightforward for arming. [724.04] Curry: In previous radios, I've had the corner switch there for arming. [728.04] Curry: And occasionally, because this is my air mode switch on and off. [733.04] Curry: Just occasionally I've been coming in for land and I was like, oh, I turned air mode off, disarmed it and the quad just goes plop. [738.04] Curry: So having a physical button here that goes in and out is something I actually like. [743.04] Stephen: When you arm, do you have to press it beyond the latching position before it goes high? [750.04] Stephen: Some trouble with the beta FPV one was that you could press the button halfway and it wouldn't latch, but it would go high. [759.04] Stephen: So then what happens is any time you tap the button, even if you don't depress it and latch it, the electronics micro switch has attacked. [769.04] Stephen: And so you get it arming for like a fraction of a second and it doesn't actually latch and click in. [775.04] Curry: That shocks me because usually the FPV are known for their awesome quality. [780.04] Curry: No, I've never managed to replicate it. [783.04] Stephen: I don't understand. [785.04] Curry: And most of my radios that I'm using generally do have that. [789.04] Curry: And I've never had the situation that I've managed to sort of press it and accidentally arm without it being all the way in and out. [797.04] Curry: They seem pretty good buttons. I think the Mambo was the first one I got that had that and it felt weird at the time. [803.04] Curry: And then I actually I quite like that. [805.04] Stephen: I just didn't like the looseness of it. I wanted it to feel like it was really like the button was not wriggling inside the housing. [813.04] Stephen: And again, that probably beats the FPV quality, but I think so. [816.04] Stephen: It was just it lacked the positive feeling that I got from the other switches and it got me thinking, oh, maybe I could like shim it up. [823.04] Stephen: Maybe I could tweak it and it's just too much. [826.04] Stephen: It's a nice clicky clicky. [828.04] Stephen: So I gave it to Jack. [830.04] Jack: Thank you. [833.04] Jack: I've got I've had to turn my because you brought you brought this up. [840.04] Jack: Where is it? [842.04] Jack: I bought some switches to try and convert like to do some testing so that [852.04] Jack: if you didn't want to position switches, I can find the micro switches. [856.04] Jack: They're right here. [857.04] Jack: I don't know whether you can see them. [859.04] Jack: They're tiny. [860.04] Jack: That's so you could turn the module off because this this has got a I'm pointing to my Turnigy 9X. [873.04] Jack: That's got a module built in. [875.04] Curry: We're still keeping it current in our way with the 9X. [880.04] Jack: Yeah, it's no good anyway because obviously it doesn't support, you know, the ELS doesn't support. [890.04] Stephen: Turnigy 9X lacking LRS support. [893.04] Stephen: I don't know how. [894.04] Jack: How dare we. [895.04] Jack: I know. [896.04] Jack: Either luck. [897.04] Jack: Turnigy 9X. [899.04] Stephen: A little switch on the power line for my GPS because the GPS was happy when it was running on 4.5 volts but would prevent the board from going to DFU mode for reasons. [909.04] Stephen: So now I've put a little switch on there so I can switch it on and off. [913.04] Stephen: Make me very happy. [914.04] Stephen: So when I want to flash the thing, I switch the GPS off and the rest of the time I just switch it on. [919.04] Stephen: Literally can't find anything anymore. [921.04] Curry: So, Stephen, talking of new equipment, you bought some new goggles and stuff, didn't you? [927.04] Curry: Yeah. [928.04] Stephen: I have no way have problems with impulse control. [930.04] Stephen: Yeah. [931.04] Stephen: So I got the walk snail gurgles. [935.04] Stephen: Oh. [936.04] Curry: And what is what is your review? [939.42] Curry: First off, we talked about having considerable noses before. [943.42] Curry: Yeah. [944.42] Stephen: I have considerable noses and I don't know what had been going on with Andy. [949.42] Stephen: I think Andy had packed up his nose somehow and it was really hurting. [954.42] Stephen: But this one came with foam pre-installed and I haven't touched it. [956.42] Stephen: I've just used it as is and it seems okay on my nose and I don't know what's going on with that. [963.42] Stephen: The SD card position is stupid. [968.42] Stephen: The micro SD card position is not only in the nose piece where you can't properly reach it, [974.42] Stephen: but they've put the socket in upside down so that the micro SD that has a raised end [981.42] Stephen: so you can put your fingernail on it and pull it out faces towards a lump of plastic [987.42] Stephen: so you can no longer actually get your fingernail on it. [991.42] Stephen: They've put it in a stupid place and they've put it in upside down [996.42] Stephen: and it's just absolutely. [998.42] Stephen: I think that the physical design of the goggles is my biggest problem with them. [1003.42] Stephen: The system flies really well, but the shell is just crap. [1009.42] Stephen: That's a stupid place. [1011.42] Stephen: The screens are so close to my eyes that my eyelashes actually leave smears on the lenses. [1018.42] Stephen: In short, I think Fat Shark would have been better not involved with this [1023.42] Stephen: because what they've done is apparently just make it really hard to use. [1030.42] Stephen: The radio system itself seems pretty good, [1033.42] Stephen: but I'm really annoyed that Fat Shark were involved because they seem to have ballsed it up. [1038.42] Stephen: I think maybe if I put some extra foam to get the eyepiece a bit further away from my eyes, it would be okay. [1046.42] Stephen: It was either smearing when I pulled it down off my forehead or it was actually my eyelashes. [1052.42] Stephen: Either way, those eyepieces just protrude too much so that they get grime wiped on them. [1058.42] Jack: Are your eyelashes covered in Vaseline? [1061.42] Stephen: I'm not like Bot Grinder. [1063.42] Stephen: I don't have giant turbo lashes that hit every single pair of goggles. [1067.42] Stephen: That's a first for me. [1070.42] Stephen: It has been magical in terms of the power of the system. [1075.42] Stephen: I've got the little 1S board. [1077.42] Stephen: They've just released an updated version of this. [1079.42] Stephen: I've got the original. I'll trim my lashes. [1081.42] Jack: Don't trim your lashes. They fall out. [1084.42] Jack: If you trim them, they will fall out. [1088.42] Stephen: I mean, I wasn't about to do that. [1091.42] Jack: Don't ask me how I know. I've never trimmed my lashes, but I know someone who has. [1098.42] Stephen: Anyway, 1S board, the original one, this was 11.6 grams, antenna, board, and camera all in. [1108.42] Stephen: I put it on a 2.5-inch jobbie. [1111.42] Stephen: It's got an AIO. It's got 1105HGLRC flame motors from about three years ago. [1120.42] Stephen: And ELRS EP2. This thing was just incredible. [1126.42] Stephen: I was just taken aback. It's got a really tiny lens camera. [1130.42] Stephen: I did up the EV because it's a very dark image, so I ended up with plus 0.7 or plus 1 on the exposure. [1137.42] Stephen: But it was going as far as my full-blown VISTAs. [1142.42] Stephen: And this is on 700, and the VISTAs are on full bore. [1148.42] Stephen: So, yeah, this is putting in a really good innings. [1151.42] Stephen: And I was able to see small branches. [1153.42] Stephen: There was none of that focus mode that you got with DJI. [1156.42] Stephen: I was getting a great picture up until the point where it went no bueno and just stopped giving screen updates. [1163.42] Stephen: It degraded very gracefully, got a little bit smooshy, but you'd fly up to stuff [1168.42] Stephen: and all the detail on the trees, on the bark, in the grass was just there. [1173.42] Stephen: Whereas with DJI, I'm used to seeing a lot of blurring. [1177.42] Curry: So that's interesting because when I've seen, and as you know, I haven't used any sort of HD goggles [1183.42] Curry: and you've used DJI for a long time and now these. [1186.42] Curry: When I see DVR stuff from them, I see that DJI looks very good. [1191.42] Curry: And I often see that on the walkstale, you've got nice focus on your foreground. [1197.42] Curry: And as it gets, especially on grass, as it gets further on, you just get this smoosh of green [1202.42] Curry: rather than any detail, like the detail gets lost a little bit out there. [1206.42] Curry: I'm not sure this will work, but I'll just share some DVR. [1212.02] Curry: You can see it. It's waiting out. [1215.02] Curry: Something's gone wrong. [1218.02] Stephen: So that's pretty good. You can see the detail on the bark, all the little branches. [1223.02] Stephen: That's the goggles DVR, not off the VTX itself. [1226.02] Stephen: And you can see it's kind of coming into focus. [1229.02] Stephen: They're blurred at maybe sort of 20 meters away. [1231.02] Stephen: But when I get close, they're all, oh, there's some peeps. I shouldn't be there. [1235.02] Stephen: But I wasn't seeing any of that nasty blurring that other people had been noticing. [1239.02] Stephen: I was pleasantly surprised. [1241.02] Stephen: And this might be because they've shipped this on a very recent firmware. [1245.02] Stephen: But compared to DJI, I can show you the DJI in the same place. [1250.02] Stephen: And that stuff was just a big wobbly mess. [1256.02] Stephen: So if I get the DJI file up, pop that on. [1261.02] Stephen: Let's just share that again. [1264.02] Stephen: So I did a flight back-to-back DJI and this other one. [1269.02] Stephen: And there's the DJI footage. [1271.02] Stephen: And you can see it's kind of just, well, I don't know if your compression here is coming to it. [1277.02] Curry: It's a little bit of a sort of fast slideshow for us, unfortunately. [1281.02] Curry: So I can't see much difference in the detail. [1283.02] Stephen: The detail on the left of the screen and on the fence, it's just a big smeary mess. [1287.02] Curry: Can I see focus mode on the sides there? Is that a bit blurry on the sides? Is that what's happening? [1291.02] Stephen: So that's focus mode really pushing in and turning stuff into nasty blocks. [1296.02] Stephen: Whereas with walk snail, there was a little bit of compression, [1300.02] Stephen: but it was just much, much less noticeable. [1303.02] Stephen: And this stuff I find really distracting when I'm flying. [1306.02] Stephen: I know there's a blob there, but does that blob have some sticky outfits or is it just a smooth surface? [1312.02] Stephen: And there are occasions when, like on the left side here, there's a fence with some bushes in front of it. [1318.02] Stephen: And DJI would cause so much degradation of the image, you couldn't see if it was a fence panel or a bush. [1325.02] Stephen: And that causes problems when you're trying to avoid stuff. [1329.02] Stephen: Whereas with walk snail, those details were always there. I didn't lose them. [1333.02] Stephen: And I was very conscious of being able to see this stuff all of a sudden. [1336.02] Stephen: Whereas previously, I kind of hadn't been able to see it. [1339.02] Stephen: You could see going around here, that fence just kind of suddenly isn't there sometimes. [1346.02] Stephen: Sometimes it's there and sometimes it just goes away with DJI, which is really kind of distracting. [1354.02] Stephen: So yeah, pleasantly surprised so far. It's a lot better than I thought. [1359.02] Curry: Somewhat subjective. Caroline's thinking DJI looks better. [1362.02] Curry: To me, the image quality looked, although we can't see the full sort of frame rate going on, [1369.02] Curry: it looks quite comparable. But I do see the focus stuff in the corner set. [1373.02] Curry: I suppose if that keeps dragging your eyes away from what's going on, that's going to make a big difference. [1378.02] Stephen: Bare in mind, we're sending a compressed signal over another streaming solution. [1382.02] Stephen: So you're not going to get a great picture. And I'm not talking purely about the lens and the camera. [1387.02] Stephen: This is a small camera. This is a 14mm camera with a tiny lens. [1393.02] Stephen: And the DJI one is the Nebula Pro, which is a 19mm camera with a much bigger lens. [1401.02] Curry: It's nice that you've got it fitted in with space to spare, though, for like a little 1S thing. [1410.54] Curry: It's running off the five-fold back. It's fine. It's happy. [1414.54] Curry: And did you have to register to make them work or did they just work without any strange information? [1420.54] Stephen: Right. Yeah, that's another thing. I just plugged it in and it works. [1423.54] Stephen: There's no software to install on the computer. All the updates are done just by copying onto the storage of the device. [1429.54] Stephen: And that's it. That's as simple as updating any other goggles. [1433.54] Stephen: Get file, put file onto device, keep device powered while file is read and written into the device. Done. [1440.54] Curry: And I'm guessing in the future it won't have to make you turn your phone on all the time when you're flying with it. [1447.54] Curry: Like the recent update for the Avata, as we've heard about. [1452.54] Stephen: Right. Well, I mean, that was for the drone. So that's kind of what you'd expect because it's in line with DJI's other consumer stuff. [1460.54] Stephen: But yeah, I don't think there's any way of doing that with this. [1466.54] Stephen: Maybe it's got a hidden Bluetooth in there, but I'm pretty sure it hasn't. [1469.54] Stephen: Or they would have made hay out the fact that it had bits of technology in there during the release, I'm sure. [1474.54] Stephen: I think so. Cool. [1477.54] Jack: Anyone else not looking forward to then changing the rules of the whole like classification? [1489.54] Curry: So Tony, what is this to talk about the new rules? [1493.54] Jack: Yes, you must know which direction your drone is facing at all times. [1498.54] Stephen: Oh, I'm looking through the camera, mate. [1501.54] Curry: This is the big change in the what constitutes visual line of sight. [1507.54] Curry: And previously, it's been this sort of basic figure of 500 meters is where you can see your drone and control it. [1515.54] Curry: Now they're saying it depends on the size of the drone. [1518.54] Curry: It depends on the circumstances of conditions if you have lighting. [1523.54] Curry: And so if you're flying a whoop, as Stephen was there, clearly got fantastic eyesight or a spotter has, [1531.54] Curry: then that's going to go out of visual line of sight a lot quicker than something's much bigger. [1537.54] Curry: And they're also saying that seeing a little speck in the sky doesn't constitute being in line of sight, [1543.54] Curry: because you can't tell the orientation or the direction from that point of view. [1549.54] Curry: And although it talked about if you've got lights on the drone, you might be able to see it further, [1556.54] Curry: but you can't rely on lights. [1560.54] Stephen: Well, but we're aircraft. [1562.54] Stephen: Aircraft, you have lights on the wingtip to show where the aircraft is in poor visibility, right? [1567.54] Curry: As I said before, stop arguing with me. [1569.54] Curry: I don't come out with these ridiculous rules. [1571.54] Curry: This is the CA's bit of time. [1573.54] Curry: But we have to say that nobody here gives two hoots about what these rules are, because... [1579.54] Curry: Yeah, it doesn't feel like it really lies when you're three foot off the ground. [1583.54] Curry: We all have invisible spotters, and this place... [1587.54] Curry: Mine's in a ghillie suit and the shrub's next to me. [1589.54] Stephen: He's quite cold, but, you know, I gave him some cocoa. He was all right. [1594.54] Curry: Yeah, all the footage I put up on YouTube is just SD cards I find lying on the ground anyway. [1603.92] Jack: There's tons of them out there. They grow wild. [1608.92] Curry: I don't think this means anything to anybody. [1611.92] Curry: I think we keep by the general edict of the various rules. [1615.92] Curry: Don't be on fire. Don't be a dick. [1618.92] Curry: And clearly don't fly over people or stuff that you would injure. [1623.92] Stephen: It really just comes down to a weakness law at the end of the day, I think. [1627.92] Stephen: That's number one. [1629.92] Stephen: Rule zero, don't be on fire. Rule one, don't be a dick, right? [1634.92] Stephen: Members of the public are not going to complain if you're polite and nice to them for the most part. [1640.92] Stephen: Like, 99.9% of people will not complain. [1643.92] Stephen: And if they're interested in it, don't tell them to f off. [1647.92] Stephen: Don't be rude to them. Just explain what you're doing and be nice and patient with them. [1652.92] Stephen: And then you'll help everyone out in the hobby. [1657.92] Jack: How high does it go? How much does it cost? [1661.92] Curry: Mm-hmm. [1663.92] Jack: Exactly. [1664.92] Curry: No, your cost can't be here. [1666.92] Curry: Wow. The disclaimer's out today. I don't know why. [1669.92] Curry: What we say doesn't constitute legal advice, by the way. It's just us chatting. [1674.92] Stephen: Any views? [1676.92] Stephen: Any views expressed by any guests on this show are personal [1681.92] Stephen: and may not reflect the views of others. [1686.92] Jack: Okay. [1688.92] Jack: Just climb a tree and no one will find you. [1691.92] Stephen: Trappy said no. [1693.92] Stephen: Can't go wrong with this. There's some quality tips. We should put these in a book. [1697.92] Curry: I feel we've talked about it personally, but like, as you say, [1701.92] Curry: 99% of the human interactions I've had with people have all been very positive. [1707.92] Curry: 10 years ago, when I started flying, people were absolutely fascinated. [1710.92] Curry: They thought this was the most brilliant thing ever. [1713.92] Curry: And now they know what a drone is. [1715.92] Curry: They're more interested to say, oh, are you surveying the fields? [1719.92] Curry: I'm like, sure, why not? We can be doing this. [1722.92] Curry: No, I have to say, I'm just a professional child and I'm just flying around, yeah. [1728.92] Curry: But they're still super interested. [1731.92] Curry: The weirdest reaction I had was from a guy, because I was flying one of those little things [1735.92] Curry: and it flies off a single 18650 and it blew his mind that I'm flying this on this single battery [1740.92] Curry: and it flies for 10 minutes. That was just crazy. [1743.92] Curry: Longer than last year's vaporizer. [1745.92] Curry: The only times I've had semi-bad interactions is when somebody says, [1752.92] Curry: excuse me, who's giving you permission to fly here? [1755.92] Curry: And I'm like, the farmer who lives there? [1758.92] Curry: Go chat to him if you like. [1760.92] Curry: And another person's saying, do you realize this whole area is supposed to be protected [1766.92] Curry: for ground nesting birds? To which I was, that's fine. [1770.92] Curry: I won't fly over them. [1771.92] Curry: But do you realize this entire area is about to be houses in six months time? [1775.92] Curry: That was my old field which got built on. [1777.92] Curry: So it kind of didn't really help much. [1781.92] Jack: Yeah, it's protected till someone can make more money off it. [1786.92] Curry: Yeah, I remember what they did there, because I think the naturalist kicked up the fact that [1791.92] Curry: this place where I live is a particular place for reptiles. [1796.92] Curry: It has the largest colony of Adders in the country and stuff, apparently. [1800.92] Curry: Only then a mistake. [1802.92] Curry: So what they did, they employed these people to walk up and down [1806.92] Curry: and catch all the reptiles and move them somewhere else for about four months. [1810.92] Curry: And they're all gone now. It's fine. We built the houses. [1813.92] Jack: Oh my god. [1815.92] Jack: Meanwhile, the new place they've stuck the reptiles, they no longer survive. [1823.92] Curry: Yeah, they can swim, yeah? [1826.92] Jack: Yeah. [1828.92] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, [1831.92] Frank: downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only, [1835.92] Frank: censored to please the iTunes people, hosted on the internet, [1838.92] Frank: forwarded through to your podcast provider, downloaded, playing on your device, [1841.92] Frank: and is now playing in your ears. All thanks to our Patreons. [1845.92] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. [1848.92] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out. [1853.92] Jack: I enjoyed you and Sophie racing and your little DIY racetrack, Currie. [1861.92] Curry: That was fun. [1863.92] Jack: That was amazing. I was like, oh my god, the effort, the black paper, the tape. [1871.92] Jack: There was no expense spared. [1875.92] Curry: I went to Amazon and bought myself a pack of black 200 GSM card for that. [1882.92] Curry: And then I laid it out and I was like, you know, I'm going to have to put a center line down there. [1887.92] Curry: I wanted to build like little buildings out of like cereal boxes and stuff, [1891.92] Curry: but then it's like, this is taking too long now. [1894.92] Stephen: Before you know it, you'd have two grand's worth of model railway parts. [1899.92] Stephen: Or taking up room in your attic somewhere. [1903.92] Jack: I'm upset that you didn't have any traffic cones or anything, you know, or a tire wall. [1911.92] Curry: We thought about it because it's like, how do you stop people driving off the track? [1915.92] Curry: But I was running out of time and I was like, Sophie, you're going to race me in this. [1919.92] Curry: Yeah, you can do it when James is going to come around to his boyfriend [1922.92] Curry: so we can race together. And then he bailed on us because he was feeling poorly. [1928.92] Jack: I don't think he wanted to be emasculated by... [1933.92] Curry: Do what he's told. Anyway, Boxing Day, that's coming out again. [1936.92] Curry: We're trying to get four people around. [1939.92] Curry: A bit more of an impromptu track and like drunk people trying it and stuff like that. [1945.92] Curry: It's all good. [1946.92] Stephen: Maybe the ad would be a little battery readout on those. [1950.92] Curry: Yeah, it'd be handy. [1953.58] Curry: Although the real current one just goes on and on forever. [1957.58] Curry: It was only the first one we got, the diatone one. [1960.58] Curry: Went for about 15 minutes and then just like... [1963.58] Curry: And then it's not just like, oh, it doesn't drive anymore. [1966.58] Curry: The dikes completely went out and it's like, oh, that one's dead then. [1969.58] Curry: But the latest one I've got was kind of like half an hour without any problems. [1976.58] Curry: Wow. [1977.58] Curry: Very nice. [1978.58] Curry: They're quite cool. [1979.58] Jack: It was good, and it was good to see. [1981.58] Jack: You know, and I enjoyed... [1983.58] Stephen: I've got to get to Race Castle. [1986.58] Stephen: I keep meaning to, and I keep failing because it involves travel. [1989.58] Stephen: Now the world's turned to ice. [1991.58] Stephen: It's made it even harder. [1992.58] Stephen: But we should perhaps go down there and do a little show at Race Castle. [1998.58] Curry: Yeah, I remember that part of the point that he was making there was about having a 3D-ness to the course. [2005.58] Curry: And that's what really made it there. [2006.58] Curry: So having just a track layout is one thing, but I know he's put like buildings and everything to make it look really cool, didn't he? [2012.58] Stephen: It's got overpasses, you know, the roads cross over each other. [2016.58] Stephen: I think some of it's just like printout that he's put by the side of the track. [2019.58] Stephen: But when you're in the car, it's pretty convincing, you know, like you're speeding along. [2023.58] Stephen: Kind of like the old PlayStation Racer games, you remember, where the scenery was just a single texture on the side of the road. [2029.58] Stephen: Flap, yeah. [2030.58] Jack: Oh, man, Gran Turismo, baby. [2033.58] Jack: Mm-hmm. [2034.58] Jack: Yeah, maybe you should do some Gran Turismo inspired course layout. [2039.58] Jack: That would be good to see. [2041.58] Curry: I feel like I'm constrained by the layout of my room. [2046.58] Stephen: I mean, surely you've got to try and create the Nuremberg ring in your living room. [2051.58] Stephen: We look at nothing less, nothing less. [2054.58] Jack: I'm going to go on Thingiverse and then... [2058.58] Jack: Thingiverse, 3D model Nuremberg ring. [2063.58] Curry: Yeah, this would take longer to print than Lee's wing that he messed up on his first launch. [2070.58] Curry: All these bits and pieces for random children crossing the street to him. [2076.09] Stephen: There is traffic cones. [2077.09] Stephen: What's the other one? [2078.09] Stephen: That is the one that they used for like all the speed records, isn't it? [2081.09] Stephen: Something, the something ring. [2083.09] Stephen: Anyway. [2084.09] Stephen: The Nuremberg ring. [2085.09] Curry: Yeah, well, they do the laps on it. [2087.09] Curry: And sometimes when they release performance cars, they're like, this does the Nuremberg ring in 11 minutes. [2092.09] Stephen: Nureberg, that's it, not Nureberg, Nureberg, yeah. [2095.09] Curry: I was good at printing cones and then I decided we'd just knock into them anyway. [2101.09] Curry: Well, that's the point. [2102.09] Stephen: That's literally the point. [2104.09] Stephen: It's the equivalent of having two people carrying a sheet of glass across the track. [2111.09] Stephen: Or some little boxes or crates of melons or chickens or something. [2115.09] Curry: I need to create a tiny little alley with little cardboard boxes [2118.09] Curry: so we can have like a police chase and you smash those in. [2122.09] Stephen: Yeah. [2123.09] Stephen: Oh, there's so many options. [2125.09] Stephen: The world of options there. [2127.09] Curry: I still, my original intention was that was to hook it up to the internet and have like, you know, [2135.09] Curry: you guys have a lap or something to see how you did. [2138.09] Curry: But my one multi-protocol radio is broken and I've got a problem doing it without that. [2147.09] Stephen: How could you only have one multi-protocol radio? [2150.09] Stephen: I have no multi-protocol. [2153.09] Stephen: I have no multi-protocol. [2155.09] Curry: When RadioMaster called me about this, they said, [2159.09] Curry: what version would you like? [2160.09] Curry: Would you like the ERS or would you like the 4-in-1? [2163.09] Curry: I thought, oh, I've got a 4-in-1. [2165.09] Curry: This is the 4-in-1. [2166.09] Curry: And they're like, we really want to push the ERS. [2169.09] Curry: Can you have the ERS instead? [2170.09] Curry: It's like, okay. [2172.09] Stephen: You've got like the T12 and the T8. [2174.09] Stephen: Weren't you reviewing radios like two years ago when they were all multi-protocol? [2178.09] Curry: The next 12 from Jumper has broken. [2181.09] Curry: This is what I think. [2182.09] Curry: RadioMaster has better quality than Jumper. [2184.09] Curry: And when I talk to Jumper... [2185.09] Jack: How is it broken? [2186.09] Curry: Maybe you can look at it, Jack. [2188.09] Curry: What happens is you plug the batteries in, [2191.09] Curry: two 18650 cells fully charged, [2193.09] Curry: and it comes up and starts whinging that the voltage is like three volts. [2200.09] Curry: So obviously, there's some sensor voltage regulator, whatever, that's gone wrong. [2207.09] Curry: And I can't work out how to fix it. [2212.2] Stephen: You have an accidentally flashed it with a different radio's firmware, have you, [2215.2] Curry: with a different... [2216.2] Curry: It just started working one day. [2218.2] Curry: I was like, oh, that's weird. [2219.2] Curry: Maybe the battery's not charged. [2221.2] Curry: Charged battery's like, oh, it's doing the same thing. [2224.2] Curry: Boo. [2226.2] Curry: And the other multi-protocol module I had was... [2230.2] Curry: Down there somewhere? [2232.2] Curry: I can't see it. [2233.2] Curry: It's, what was it made by? [2234.2] Curry: I can't remember who it was made by. [2236.2] Curry: And it turned out to be using the wrong chip, [2238.2] Curry: which is only 64K flash instead of 128K it needs. [2242.2] Curry: So the latest firmware won't work on it because it's got no flash space. [2247.2] Curry: You can cobble together your own version of it [2251.2] Curry: with the protocols you want if you want to, [2253.2] Curry: but it's like a bit of a fat world of pain. [2256.2] Jack: Is that the JR module one that was... [2260.2] Curry: No, the one I've got, it's a nano module, [2264.2] Curry: but it had the same thing for the JR one as well. [2268.2] Curry: They basically used this different chip, [2271.2] Curry: which they shouldn't have, to cut a corner. [2273.2] Curry: And it turned out the flash image was smaller than it needed to be. [2277.2] Stephen: When more people ever learn, always seeing that in clones, [2281.2] Stephen: like, oh, this is really great value. [2283.2] Stephen: Everyone buys it. [2284.2] Stephen: And then like, oh, by the way, it doesn't actually work. [2288.2] Stephen: So you save $3 and it doesn't work. [2292.2] Jack: Do you know what? [2293.2] Jack: I've done that. [2294.2] Jack: The ear, sheen, DVR, little recording box. [2298.2] Jack: That really pissed me off. [2300.2] Jack: Yeah, the first one was great. [2302.2] Jack: And then the second one was just garbage. [2305.2] Jack: And now you can't get the power play. [2312.54] Jack: Not why would you want to anyway, because... [2316.54] Stephen: I've been really happy with the inbuilt goggles on the Skyzone. [2319.54] Stephen: That's been pretty solid. [2321.54] Stephen: I've only got the V1, so it's the 30FPS one, [2324.54] Stephen: but I just can't complain. [2326.54] Curry: I think the problem was that Fat Shark was always of the opinion [2330.54] Curry: that it was too dangerous to change the shell of the goggle or the DVR, [2335.54] Curry: even though they had multiple, like, better versions coming along. [2339.54] Curry: They're like, no, no, no, we don't want to touch anything. [2342.54] Curry: So even up to their very latest analog releases, [2345.54] Curry: they still had the old DVRs. [2347.54] Stephen: Can our customers please leave us alone [2349.54] Stephen: and just continue buying the things and ignore the competing products? [2352.54] Stephen: Ignore them. They don't exist. [2354.54] Stephen: It's all an illusion. Don't look behind the curtain. [2357.54] Curry: Pretty much. [2358.54] Stephen: Yeah. [2359.54] Stephen: Yeah, I've had a couple of pairs of Skyzones, [2361.54] Stephen: and the DVRs just kind of worked on them. [2364.54] Stephen: But yeah, I see a lot of people, when we were at that FPV drone fest, [2367.54] Stephen: they all had power plays on and stopped recording on the power play and stuff. [2372.54] Curry: I think it's important for me, because I show a lot, [2376.54] Curry: I'd say 90% of my flight to DVR, [2378.54] Curry: because I'm often saying, here is, you know, a VTX, [2382.54] Curry: so it's no good Chang GoPro footage. [2384.54] Curry: So I want to show what I see. [2385.54] Curry: And if I record it in the Fat Sharks, it's like, [2388.54] Curry: I have to say, well, it looks better than this through the goggles, [2390.54] Curry: which always sounds a bit crap. [2392.54] Curry: At least I record it in the power play. [2394.54] Curry: It looks much more on par with what I'm seeing, [2397.54] Curry: because the whole colour is different. [2399.54] Curry: It's 60 frames a second. It looks a lot better. [2402.54] Jack: You can get the power play from AliExpress. [2406.54] Stephen: How much is the power play? [2407.54] Stephen: Why are you after one, Jack? [2408.54] Stephen: Like 50 quid or something? [2410.54] Jack: No, £148 and 35 pence from AliExpress. [2414.54] Stephen: You could buy a half-decent pair of goggles [2417.54] Stephen: for something in that ballpark that comes with a better DVR than the Fat Shark one. [2421.54] Jack: hobbyRC is £114.80. [2425.54] Jack: They didn't start off that price, did they? [2427.54] Curry: They've inflated. [2430.54] Jack: Yeah, we were fighting the analog film cameras [2437.54] Jack: because they were using them to use them for recording and stuff. [2444.54] Jack: It was a cheaper screen thing. [2447.54] Jack: But yeah, they're the only two places that kind of list them. [2452.54] Jack: AliExpress, huge markup. [2454.54] Stephen: I don't think I could in good conscience recommend [2456.54] Stephen: getting a power play at this point with those prices. [2459.54] Stephen: You should seriously consider putting in a bit extra [2461.54] Stephen: and just upgrade the goggles and not need a power play at all. [2466.54] Curry: Yeah. [2468.54] Curry: I mean, I would always say as long as you've got something that's recording DVR, [2473.54] Curry: that's pretty good, because at least if you crash or something, [2476.54] Curry: you've got some sort of clue about where it is and how to get it back. [2480.54] Curry: That's the main thing. [2481.54] Stephen: Check out and see what the going cost for goggles is, [2485.54] Stephen: whether they come down with all these digital ones appearing. [2490.54] Curry: I have a feeling that the latest and greatest of the Fat Shark analogs [2495.54] Curry: are probably similar to what the Walkstow's got, aren't they? [2500.54] Stephen: Yeah, so Skyzone Cobra SD Diversity goggles are £105. [2508.54] Stephen: They're box goggles, so it's not great, [2511.54] Stephen: but they've got that decent Skyzone module in and a DVR. [2517.54] Jack: You can't even buy bloody ghost receivers. [2522.54] Jack: That's why I'm now using EOS and trying to fight the fact that Channel 5 [2528.54] Jack: doesn't do sodal what I want it to do. [2532.54] Curry: Is Channel 6? [2534.54] Jack: Yeah, I suppose I could do that. [2536.54] Jack: Let me just move them all down. [2538.54] Curry: Stop having such a stupid idea about... [2541.54] Curry: Run the propellers without the gyro, please. [2543.54] Stephen: So you can get Skyzone Cobra X-V2s. [2548.54] Stephen: It looks like they start for the S model, which is 800 x 480 screen. [2554.54] Stephen: They start at about 100 to 130, depending on who's got them. [2559.54] Stephen: And then the fancy ones with the Hi-Res, I think 1080p screen? [2564.54] Stephen: Oh, 720p screen. [2566.54] Stephen: They are about 200-ish. [2570.54] Stephen: So if a power play is going to be near 150, really got to want that power play. [2577.54] Curry: I'm going to have to do something about new goggles. [2580.54] Curry: I have to do something about HD. [2582.54] Curry: I've still got my Dominator V3s, so I am 640 x 480. [2589.54] Curry: And my horrendous box goggles I'm using for my open HD flying [2595.54] Curry: seem to have this little thing. [2598.54] Curry: If a gust of no wind catches the HDMI cable and it moves one nanometer, [2605.54] Curry: then it goes blank. [2607.54] Curry: I was like, uh-oh, uh-oh, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. [2609.54] Curry: That's not what you want. [2611.54] Curry: Well, HDMI connectors aren't really built to hang out of things that you move around. [2616.54] Curry: They've got very stiff shielded cables, because that's what... [2620.54] Stephen: Okay, so a bit of beef here that I've got with it. [2623.54] Stephen: HDMI was not designed to be a quality connector. [2628.54] Stephen: HDMI was purely the lowest cost option that people could get to replace SCART leads. [2634.54] Stephen: The engineering that went into that from all the people concerned wasn't to make a great connector. [2639.54] Stephen: It was to make it as cheap as they possibly could. [2643.54] Stephen: And it's just lasted and lasted and lasted. [2646.54] Stephen: We never got any clips to hold it in. [2649.54] Stephen: There was never any sort of decent anything, really. [2654.54] Stephen: The thing is that it is the worst. [2657.54] Curry: Because if you never have a SCART cable fall out, those things lock in like something else. [2661.54] Curry: DVI... [2663.54] Curry: They don't lock in, but they're pretty tight, because they've got so many pin connections. [2668.54] Curry: And then you force your pins on them, yeah. [2671.54] Curry: DVI was always good, and you generally had screws to hold it in. [2675.54] Curry: Even like VJ and stuff. [2677.54] Curry: Yeah, HDMI is the worst for that. [2679.54] Curry: And because the cable is so heavy... [2682.54] Stephen: The display port has a handy little button, it actually goes in there. [2684.54] Stephen: You don't need to unscrew it. You press the button and pull it out. [2687.54] Stephen: What we should have is display port and everything, but it just costs a bit more. [2691.54] Stephen: Display port has a button in there, and when you press the button, [2695.54] Stephen: it pulls little catches back into the body of the connector, [2699.54] Stephen: so it doesn't hold in there anymore, and you can slide it out. [2702.54] Stephen: But does anyone use it? Nope. [2706.54] Curry: Only on monitors, but it doesn't carry audio, does it? That's the only problem. [2709.54] Stephen: Yeah, it does. [2711.54] Stephen: Does it? [2713.54] Stephen: I have two monitors here, and that one is speakers and carries audio with display port. [2718.54] Curry: I'll tell you the problem is that I don't actually have audio through my gaming monitor. [2725.54] Curry: So normally I route HDMI into audio extractor that then goes into the amp, [2730.54] Curry: but I haven't got that for display port. [2732.54] Curry: Display port's just my secondary display from my Mac to my monitor. [2737.54] Curry: But yeah, it would be a much more sensible option. [2740.54] Stephen: Yeah. [2741.54] Stephen: Well, you find display port on any computer monitor costs more than about 100 quid, [2748.54] Stephen: but you can buy like a thousand pound home Hi-Fi amps, [2753.54] Stephen: and they only have HDMI, there's no display port. [2756.54] Stephen: You spend a couple of grand on a TV, it's just got HDMI, no display port. [2760.54] Stephen: So unfortunately, we're all stuck with this kind of connector that falls out all the time on everything. [2769.54] Curry: Yeah, and that is a worry when you're flying stuff. [2772.54] Curry: That's, I mean, I don't think it's quite the same. [2775.54] Curry: So because you were talking about the, the walk snail VRX, [2780.54] Curry: which would sort of clip on your goggles and have a HDMI cable, [2783.54] Curry: but at least that's a little short. [2785.54] Curry: It hasn't got the weight of all stuff. [2788.54] Stephen: You've got a bunch of stuff on the floor with a three meter cable. [2791.54] Curry: It's like, I need to hire my spotter just to hold the cable. [2796.54] Curry: You hold it like this into the air. [2798.54] Stephen: Or wait for someone to make a nice little 3D printed box that you clip on the front of your goggles, [2803.54] Stephen: and then you can just have it all compact with tiny cables. [2807.54] Jack: That's not going to happen. [2808.54] Stephen: Is that impossible? [2809.54] Stephen: Has it got to be a giant Pi 4 with a massive fan? [2814.54] Jack: Yeah, Curry just doesn't print anything. [2817.54] Jack: They print all his printers for show. [2821.54] Stephen: I printed something just this week and designed it. [2824.54] Stephen: Couldn't you, couldn't you print a little box to put your pie in with a little lug that goes on to the goggles fan or something? [2829.54] Curry: I suppose I could. [2831.54] Curry: The trouble is, like, these are my, these are my goggles. [2837.54] Curry: Open HD, the big box goggles. There's only thing I've got with 1080. [2841.54] Curry: And sure, I can stick it on top. [2843.54] Jack: Is it got an Open HD sticker? [2846.54] Curry: Yeah. [2848.54] Curry: These are not the Open HD goggles. I do have some Open HD stickers. [2853.54] Stephen: I'm sure you could find a way to mount it. [2857.54] Stephen: For hook or crook, you put a little bracket on the top of it. [2861.54] Stephen: There's got to be something that screws on, or at some point you could glue a little bracket on, [2865.54] Stephen: and then just have a watch that doesn't matter. [2868.54] Curry: Isn't it? [2869.54] Curry: But yeah, maybe. But the trouble is, what I run is I have a big, like, 5000 milliamp hour 4S going into a charger [2881.54] Curry: that then runs as a power supply to produce the 5 volts that go into the Pi, [2886.54] Curry: which generally all sits on this little tripod, which gets my antenna up there. [2894.54] Curry: The goggles run also off the charger through USB that goes into this USB 5 volt to 9 volt into the goggles. [2902.54] Stephen: So you could just put all of this in a box and just plug a USB charger into it on the front of the goggles. [2907.54] Stephen: That's what I'm hearing. [2910.54] Stephen: Work on the next string clip. [2914.54] Curry: Maybe I should do that. I do have quite a small, I've got like a 30 centimeter HDMI cable, [2919.54] Curry: but it doesn't help that that pair of goggles uses HDMI mini, so there's also a converter on it. [2928.54] Curry: So it comes out this far because it's not just one cable. [2933.54] Curry: It's like a cable into a converter just to make it shake. [2936.54] Stephen: You can buy cables that go from big HDMI to little HDMI on eBay for a couple of quid. [2941.54] Stephen: Ask me how I know. [2943.54] Curry: Maybe I'll do that. [2945.54] Stephen: But I did make progress on something. [2948.54] Stephen: Sorry, I'm just assaulting Curry here and dragging him over the coals. [2953.54] Jack: No, don't worry. [2954.54] Jack: It was my turn a minute ago with the arm. [2957.54] Jack: What do you mean? [2958.54] Jack: You have a lot. [2961.54] Curry: Yeah, what an idiot. [2962.54] Curry: Look, I finally got. [2964.54] Curry: So we've got the Maple Leaf antenna. [2967.54] Curry: We have removed the USB adapter and we've got Jack's little balance lead connector. [2972.54] Curry: So that's soldered on directly now because they were all the HDMI. [2978.54] Curry: The old HD people were shouting at me about that. [2980.54] Curry: On the Chimera 7, we have now got. [2984.54] Curry: We can see that this is the Pi rather nice here. [2989.54] Curry: You can see that, which is now mounted. [2991.54] Stephen: It looks like a pretty tight build compared to what you had before. [2995.54] Curry: Yes. [2996.54] Curry: Well, I thought the quality of the build let me down. [2999.54] Curry: So that is the Pi sat there. [3002.54] Curry: And what I've done, I've just printed out these 3D printed... [3007.54] Curry: Hang on. [3008.54] Stephen: Coming down. [3009.54] Stephen: To fit your fancy... [3010.54] Stephen: Come here. [3011.54] Curry: There's some special camera module you had, right? [3013.54] Curry: Tap. [3014.54] Curry: Right. [3015.54] Curry: It's not following anymore. [3016.54] Curry: So these 3D printed bits replace... [3019.54] Curry: Lost it. [3020.54] Curry: There's this camera. [3021.54] Curry: The camera had carbon fiber bits that went out like this and then the camera dropped here. [3026.54] Curry: So the Pi camera is too wide. [3029.54] Curry: So I've printed these bits so they slot into the frame. [3032.54] Curry: And then we're going to print... [3033.54] Curry: This is going to come out at a 20 degree angle. [3035.54] Curry: And then we're going to have another plate that goes on there, which is going to catch the camera. [3039.54] Curry: And then we just have to have the camera cable going there. [3042.54] Curry: And then a few wires up to the... [3045.54] Stephen: So the camera cable is going to be inside the quad. [3048.54] Stephen: Yes. [3049.54] Stephen: A marked improvement. [3050.54] Curry: A marked improvement on last time. [3051.54] Curry: Everything's going to be internal except for the Wi-Fi adapter. [3056.54] Curry: And that's because I've only got one Wi-Fi adapter to swap between the plane and the quad. [3061.54] Curry: But I have got this nice little balance connector which should work better. [3065.54] Curry: That's the plan. [3068.54] Stephen: Hopefully by spring this is all ready to go. [3072.54] Curry: Yeah, I mean the plane's ready to go now, but I didn't want to go out because it was wet and horrible. [3076.54] Curry: Oh, it is so horrible. [3077.54] Jack: It is barely cold. [3079.54] Curry: Even if you landed it perfectly, it's like just kicking it through some mud. [3084.54] Curry: It's not nice down there. [3087.54] Stephen: Yeah, luckily everything isn't even thawing here. [3090.54] Stephen: It's drying out. [3091.54] Stephen: So it's gone straight from ice to just dry ground. [3094.54] Stephen: It's kind of magical. [3095.54] Stephen: This never happens in London. [3097.54] Stephen: It's always just like mud and filth and bits of oil and tire rubber mixed with snow sprayed everywhere. [3104.54] Stephen: But for once, yeah, it's actually quite a clean bit of snow, which is wonderful. [3108.54] Stephen: You can go out and fly. [3110.54] Stephen: You don't get covered in mud and filth and don't get blackened shoes and trouser legs just walking down the road. [3118.54] Stephen: It's quite nice. [3120.54] Stephen: How curious. [3121.54] Stephen: Unheard of. [3123.54] Stephen: I'm still well impressed with this little guy. [3129.89] Curry: So we had a comment way back from Caroline saying everyone ready for Christmas. [3134.89] Curry: Is anybody know about any FPV themed presents that may be coming or giving in your festivities? [3146.89] Jack: No. [3148.89] Curry: Silence is deafening. [3150.89] Curry: No, it's not for everyone. [3152.89] Stephen: Yeah, I've kind of geared up. [3154.89] Stephen: That's the thing. [3157.89] Curry: Well, I don't think there's anything less for anybody to buy you, is there? [3160.89] Curry: This week I bought the following because I didn't have it and it exists. [3165.89] Curry: Seems to be your excuse mostly. [3167.89] Stephen: Well, I did hold off in all due respects since like October or whatever when this was actually before then. [3175.89] Stephen: I think it was July or something like that. [3177.89] Stephen: I waited for them to kick the tires and make sure they weren't going to drop it like a fart in a lift and run away. [3185.89] Stephen: They seem to have been doing updates, which is good to see. [3187.89] Stephen: So I felt like it was time to jump in. [3193.9] Jack: The O3A unit is £209. [3197.9] Stephen: Yeah. [3198.9] Stephen: I mean, that was a consideration as well. [3200.9] Jack: Meanwhile, the goggles are £229. [3205.9] Jack: £729. [3208.9] Curry: Let's say £200 seems a bit cheap. [3210.9] Stephen: I just ordered the even lighter version of that Warksnell 1S and that was on Cadex's website for $90. [3221.9] Jack: Which is equivalent to £1 now anyway. [3224.9] Jack: Not quite. [3225.9] Jack: It's true. [3226.9] Stephen: About 80 quid. [3230.9] Stephen: But yeah, really, really quite good value, which is a big plus compared to even the DJI stuff. [3237.9] Stephen: It's just a little bit more than that. [3240.9] Stephen: Especially now you can only get the RunCam camera, which is stuck in 4x3 mode. [3245.9] Stephen: And despite people's constant protestations that 4x3 gives you more field of view, I just want 16x9. [3252.9] Stephen: I want to use all the goggles screen. [3256.9] Curry: Given the fact that your monitor is like this wide, if you had a pair of goggles that were like, [3262.9] Curry: would you buy those? [3264.9] Curry: This is brilliant. [3265.9] Curry: I can look around inside my goggles and not see the editor. [3267.9] Stephen: Yeah, I'm running a 21x9 monitor here, which I thought was a great idea when I got it because I could have a couple of browser windows next to each other and make use of it. [3277.9] Stephen: But actually, I think in retrospect, I probably just go 16x9 because when you play games and stuff like that, people just go, [3286.9] Stephen: oh, I'm not going to offer this resolution. [3289.9] Stephen: I'm going to offer the 16x9 resolutions. [3294.9] Stephen: It's a bit too esoteric, I think, 21x9. [3297.9] Stephen: The only time it's nice is if you want to watch a movie and you can watch the big widescreen 2.35x1 stuff without bars on the top and bottom. [3305.9] Stephen: But you just get a bigger screen. [3308.9] Jack: A lot of the sort of, I'm just having a little look through like, say, hobby RC. [3314.9] Jack: We're in this weird transitional period where I think maybe a few people might go to HD. [3323.9] Jack: But a lot of stuff is all pre-order or just out of stock. [3329.9] Jack: For instance, the Swordfish tailplane that Painless is talking about, that's not in stock. [3340.9] Jack: The DJI Goggles are pre-order. [3343.9] Jack: The Radio Master Boxer, that's pre-order. [3347.9] Jack: So like ordering anything. [3351.9] Jack: And with the current state of Royal Mail, or Royal Fail, should we say, [3359.9] Jack: if you haven't already bought something, it's highly unlikely, unless you get it shipped with a courier service for a bit more money, [3368.9] Jack: that you're going to end up with it in time. [3372.9] Stephen: So, Caroline Tyler. [3378.92] Stephen: 03 on a plane, shame no OSD from iNav. [3382.92] Stephen: Well, I did notice this, and what you want is to check out PR number 8631 over on iNav, [3391.92] Stephen: where people are looking at implementing a beta flight compatible OSD mode, which just works with the 03 stuff. [3401.92] Stephen: And it looks like, despite everyone wanting to fight the good fight and make DJI do what they want to do, [3407.92] Stephen: they didn't bother to communicate with beta flight, and they certainly aren't communicating with iNav. [3411.92] Stephen: So it's looking like what you end up with is an OSD that, instead of all the nice symbols, [3416.92] Stephen: just has a bunch of question marks where it's not implementing the symbols for iNav. [3421.92] Stephen: And that seems like it's going to make it on. So there is hope. [3427.92] Jack: It's like old, you know, multue OSD when you didn't update fonts, and you just get a load of V's everywhere and jog and... [3439.92] Curry: Yeah. That was quite fun. [3442.92] Curry: Sometimes your font upload would look like it would work. [3445.92] Curry: And then, like, how high am I? I don't know. [3448.92] Curry: Cross symbol with a sort of slash and a bit of a dot. What does that mean? [3452.92] Jack: That's an emoji that means too high. [3455.92] Jack: Or bits would just turn off, like the arrow to home. [3459.92] Jack: How's your OSD doing, Jack? Adventures with OSD. [3464.92] Jack: I don't know. I don't want to jinx it. [3467.92] Stephen: You put the smoke back in, was the last update, right? [3470.92] Jack: Yeah. I don't know how long that's going to last because it basically got power over the video short. [3486.99] Jack: And it was definitely cooking for several times. So as far as I know, okay. [3494.99] Jack: But I still need to see whether I can even turn the power up on that VTX. [3499.99] Jack: And then, yeah, give it a bit of a test hover, which I kind of want you to be around. [3506.99] Jack: So at least if it does go wrong, we can laugh about it on the show. Fair enough. [3511.99] Jack: I would invite Curry, but he's always busy with family stuff. [3517.99] Stephen: I replaced my fire quad and it's now flying beautifully. [3522.99] Stephen: The one that had an ignomious death and actually burnt holes through the PCB. [3528.99] Jack: Yeah. I'm sorry, Gary. We did catch up in your defense. [3534.99] Jack: We did catch up the other day. I did give you a phone call. [3539.99] Curry: I'm available when I'm available. [3542.99] Jack: Yeah. I don't know of the evening. [3546.99] Jack: I know that you're usually playing God of War. [3553.99] Jack: Dude, where's my God? [3556.99] Jack: Right. I guess that is all we've got time for. [3560.99] Jack: Curry won't be here. He'll be skiing next week. [3563.99] Jack: So break a leg. Be careful. Have fun. [3568.99] Jack: Yeah. Go easy, my friend. [3571.99] Curry: Also, Instagram for my usual annual hunt of no drone signs. [3576.99] Curry: Because that's my holiday hobby. [3581.46] Jack: I bet you'll be wishing you were in the Maldives again. [3587.48] Curry: Depends how cold it is. [3589.48] Stephen: That's just the end of the week in the boot room. [3592.48] Stephen: That tends to make you want to wish to be anywhere else. [3596.48] Jack: This show is sponsored by our lovely patrons. [3601.48] Jack: That keeps us impartial. [3604.48] Jack: It gets the editor to usually edit really nice audio [3608.48] Jack: when Jack remembers to hit the audio button. [3612.48] Jack: I'm sorry, editor. [3613.48] Jack: Feel free to text your displeasurement at me. [3618.48] Jack: I'm sorry. [3619.48] Jack: Definitely. [3620.48] Jack: Our levels are somewhat akin and not too far out. [3624.48] Jack: Fingers crossed. [3625.48] Jack: There's a bit of talking over each other, but it wouldn't be LDO. [3629.48] Jack: It wasn't. [3630.48] Jack: Thank you, our lovely patrons. [3633.48] Jack: We are live every Thursday, 8 p.m. UK time, till 9. [3638.48] Jack: We usually have a bonus podcast. [3641.48] Jack: So if you'd like to become a patron, you can join from $1 to several dollars. [3647.48] Jack: And we love and really appreciate your support. [3652.48] Jack: It's been a fantastic time, you know, [3656.48] Jack: coming up for our eight years soon next year. [3660.48] Jack: So I can't wait. [3662.48] Jack: And I've heard from Frank that he might be around next week. [3667.48] Jack: And Tony, if you want to come on, [3669.48] Jack: it'd be kind of cool to get the guys back in town. [3673.48] Jack: You'd be joined by everyone's favorite, my star, Stephen. [3678.48] Jack: Good evening. [3679.48] Jack: Goodbye. [3680.48] Jack: Everyone's favorite curry kitten. [3683.48] Jack: Goodbye. [3684.48] Jack: And I've been bright until I fly. [3685.48] Jack: You've been listening to Let's Throw Now. [3687.48] Jack: Thank you. [3688.48] Stephen: Good night. [3689.48] Stephen: Telemetry lost.
