[0.0] Jack: Hello, and you're listening to Let's Drone Out, a special thank you to our lovely patrons
[6.28] Jack: that help donate so that we can pay the editor to remove the swear words and silly things
[11.36] Jack: we say.
[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to…
[14.4] Jack: Carlos Campos!
[16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner.
[17.84] Frank: Sam Dahmer.
[19.68] Frank: On with the show.
[20.68] Jack: Hello, and welcome to Let's Drone Out tonight.
[57.71] Jack: We are…
[58.71] Jack: He's got a classic LDO lineup.
[61.79] Jack: You're joined by our Lord of Master, Andrew S. Frank.
[67.99] Jack: Good evening.
[70.67] Jack: My darling wife, Tony.
[71.67] Tony: You didn't know what to say there, did you, Bonjour?
[74.67] Jack: I thought of something a whole class later.
[77.67] Jack: Yeah, I know you did.
[80.67] Jack: I know.
[82.15] Jack: My darling wife, how are you doing?
[84.63] Frank: Yeah, I'm all right.
[86.91] Jack: And I am, of course, Brian to Life Lie, and you're listening to Let's Drone Out.
[91.39] Jack: Hello.
[92.39] Jack: It's Thursday, 16th February, 2023.
[96.71] Jack: All of a sudden, I've been transported back to 2018 with you two, and only you two here.
[108.03] Frank: We're 10 shows off our 400th show.
[111.47] Frank: Wow.
[112.47] Frank: We're still kind of learning what we're doing every week, and when we're well prepared
[118.67] Frank: this week, we've got lots to talk about with both seconds that we had before going live
[126.91] Frank: to discuss it.
[127.91] Frank: I wasn't there.
[128.91] Tony: What were we discussing?
[129.91] Tony: Not them stupid props.
[130.91] Tony: I've had enough of seeing them props everywhere now.
[133.91] Tony: Oh, the toroidal props.
[134.91] Tony: Oh, yeah, that's enough.
[135.91] Tony: Enough of that.
[136.91] Frank: Have you seen, has anyone seen anyone actually have any success with them?
[146.99] Frank: I've seen them.
[147.99] Tony: Is it Quodmover?
[148.99] Frank: Is it Quodmover?
[149.99] Frank: Quodmover did do some, but I think his point was like, look how noisy this is compared
[160.67] Frank: to just normal props that I have.
[162.75] Tony: Yeah, I think he put a stupid amount of blades on props, like 16 blade props and they were
[169.67] Tony: quieter.
[170.67] Tony: Yeah.
[171.67] Tony: So, yeah, I don't think it worked, really.
[176.67] Frank: Well, I mean, it's the sort of thing that's like being built out of a computer simulation,
[184.47] Frank: presumably some kind of computational flow for them, it probably wouldn't be, well, I
[191.75] Frank: mean, depending on your definition, I imagine this probably thinks, but I mean, it's going
[197.19] Frank: to be the same thing.
[198.19] Frank: I mean, like we have definitely had like some absolute rubbish props, right?
[205.19] Frank: Some of the bullnose stuff that people are getting where it was like really, really steep
[208.83] Frank: pitch and it was just like just making noise and spinning without being very efficient.
[215.63] Frank: I mean, just because something looks similar to the human eye doesn't mean that it's going
[221.43] Frank: to have the same properties when it's actually pushing some fluid around.
[226.27] Jack: So I imagine like, I would argue against this because Tony, if you remember, cut his props
[237.83] Jack: down with kitchen scissors and won a right.
[243.99] Tony: Oh, no, I won that one.
[246.03] Frank: Yeah.
[247.03] Frank: Oh, yeah.
[248.03] Frank: But I mean, those were like some probably some decent props that you've changed by trimming
[255.35] Frank: the ends off, not like if you had some rubbish bullnose, like actual molded bullnose props
[263.59] Frank: that were just like out the packet, like some of those are really, really bad.
[269.47] Frank: And I'm sure the same thing will happen here where like if someone, but the thing is like
[273.91] Frank: toroidal props, as I imagine, that's going to make it quite tricky to mold because you're
[279.59] Frank: going to have like with molding, yeah, for injection molding, you've got two massive
[286.55] Frank: great big bits of metal that come together, you squeeze them plastic into and then it
[292.35] Frank: comes apart again and you've got to be able to make sure that those two bits of metal
[297.59] Frank: can come apart, which means that you have a seam line all the way around.
[302.71] Frank: Each bit of metal can't go past that seam line so it can actually come apart.
[307.47] Frank: So I mean, you can be very clever with injection molding.
[312.23] Frank: You can have it on slightly funny angles.
[315.47] Frank: You can have it so that the the actual plastic as it cools, it can shrink in different ways.
[323.47] Frank: And so it actually warps itself after it comes out the molds so that you can change the shape
[327.95] Frank: that way.
[330.71] Frank: I imagine you're going to have these issues where you've got, you kind of need the flexibility
[338.99] Frank: of 3D printing to get the exact dimensions and shape that you need to get the fluid properties
[346.71] Frank: that this guy, I'm guessing MIT, I think it was, I think it was MIT.
[352.35] Frank: The guy who did sort of the study that was originally done that came up with this idea,
[357.75] Frank: you're going to have to get that exact shape to get the benefits close enough.
[362.91] Frank: And I wonder whether you're actually going to get that when you compromise it by making
[370.03] Frank: it designable for injection molding.
[371.71] Frank: It'll be interesting to see.
[374.35] Tony: I mean, one of the benefits apart from just how loud they are, is there any performance
[382.35] Tony: in any other department?
[385.03] Frank: Is it fast learning?
[387.71] Frank: Yeah, because I think that was I mean, it's a I mean, Flighttest and Peter Striepel have
[394.35] Frank: done loads about the the angular wings, the so the the planes planes, yeah, the hoop planes
[403.31] Frank: where the wings come all the way to the top and then join to each other because what they're
[408.19] Frank: trying to avoid is having the spillover at the edge of a wing where the higher pressure
[413.91] Frank: in the low pressure meat and you have a load of vortices and that creates a load of noise
[417.75] Frank: and creates a load of drag and makes it less efficient. So I think the idea with the toroidal
[424.43] Frank: props is to apply that same principle to propellers and have it spinning and so at the tip you
[434.51] Frank: get the same spillover and so if you join the two tips together to make it a toroidal
[440.27] Frank: shape blade then I think the idea and presumably backed up by some simulation somewhere and some
[447.15] Tony: testing. Well I think the aliens have already tested it with their design. Yeah yeah. They're
[455.55] Tony: the ends of the winglets yeah they've changed a lot haven't they over the years I've seen them.
[460.91] Jack: If you look that is the exact profile of the old uh gem fan props. So we're looking at the wing
[470.19] Frank: lets at the end of a wing of something that I can't quite read there. A bow in triple seven.
[477.31] Jack: Yeah um yeah Ryan Air performs its first bowing 737 slash or dash 800 winglet retrofit yeah and
[488.59] Jack: it's called a split scimitar winglet is that right am I pronouncing that right Frank?
[497.55] Frank: Uh I can't actually read it it's too small on my screen but I'll I'll say scimitar sounds
[503.47] Frank: reasonable but uh I'm sure it's the same kind but the thing is the annular wing I feel like
[510.59] Frank: never actually ended up being very practical so I don't I don't know whether that was a kind of
[515.95] Frank: mechanical like materials properties thing which by having a small little blade you're gonna get
[522.75] Frank: avoid those problems and still get some benefits I don't know nice uh yeah and as uh
[530.91] Frank: Dominic Clifton says in the chat they should be safer as they don't have a sharp pointy bit of
[535.87] Frank: both ends and I said in our little group chat I I thought oh maybe they'll be good for like
[541.63] Frank: flying around netted areas like if you're racing like in the beginning you're caught up yeah until
[548.03] Frank: they poke through and twist anyway but at least you could just pull it and it wouldn't be like
[553.15] Frank: caught around quite as much I don't know I feel like we've we've had loads of issues of I mean
[559.15] Frank: maybe it would be the same problem but some of these like where aware they've like taken the
[564.19] Frank: three blades and they've just almost made a hoop all the way around it yeah yeah the this stretched
[573.07] Jack: is that true what's Digby Dan's put in the chat yeah well of course like most things
[579.23] Jack: everything adds up hence why it's cheaper to glue phones together than use screws
[587.71] Frank: so Digby Dan was saying it the scimitar split winglets will save Ryan air 100 million pounds
[595.15] Frank: in fuel and yeah I can believe that well that's good for the environment as well isn't it uh
[602.51] Frank: but then you make it cheaper to fly and so more than more people like to fly yeah there is that
[608.75] Frank: but can it be any cheaper than Ryan air I was going to say I don't have to worry about fuel
[613.31] Tony: being too cheap at the moment do we that's not the problem no that's not the problem yet different
[618.75] Frank: kind of fuel isn't it technically I mean it's a different part of the fractional distilling
[626.19] Tony: process but it's not crude oil I think I watched Jerry you know um I'll make Jerry the other day
[633.95] Tony: Big Jack TV um sure he was talking about a plane has now flown done a test fly with on green
[642.75] Tony: kind of green fuel although I didn't listen I was just it was in the background but I don't know
[646.99] Frank: if that's a thing yet uh the I believe the RAF have been testing it as well I think they've had
[652.43] Frank: some biofuels um I mean but then you get into like oh but then they're they're going to end up
[662.62] Frank: using like crude oil to generate the fertilizers that goes on the field to grow the thing that you
[669.42] Frank: then process using more energy to then turn into it's it's very tricky yeah environmental stuff
[677.5] Frank: you always end up going around in circles right 100 but the like plastic on like single use
[683.98] Frank: plastic on food stuff so it seems like a really bad thing for the environment but it reduces it
[688.62] Frank: reduces the food spoilage in the waste so it means that for the same amount of apples on your table
[694.06] Frank: you end up with fewer apples having to be grown so it reduces the carbon footprint of the apple
[699.34] Frank: that you actually end up eating but you're increasing the amount of plastic that's thrown
[706.38] Jack: out in the water isn't it it's always win-lose yeah me and Max Fran can't handle it he he just wants
[714.78] Jack: win-win yeah always yeah I was gonna there was some requests about talking about the sort of
[728.14] Jack: like history sort of stuff and I am frantically looking at old uh Oscar Liang's
[739.1] Frank: divorce beheaded died divorce beheaded survived there we go done a history
[744.94] Jack: that is pretty good I don't know whether we want I don't know we don't even have to go there
[750.78] Jack: I could just grab uh grab the image of the toroidal props again oh yeah I've had enough
[757.42] Frank: of them I know I know I mean we were having a chat in the on our day on there ages and ages ago
[768.37] Frank: I mean it ended up being just me Jack and Stephen but anyone could join in uh we were discussing
[776.29] Frank: what we thought were kind of the big milestones in quads that like actually improved the experience
[783.49] Frank: and made it easier to to get out and fly and have a good day of flying uh they could go through
[790.93] Frank: some of those I'll be interested to see what you were talking about yeah I mean the ones
[798.13] Frank: that we came up with so far anyone in the chat wants to chuck them in as well uh as we go look
[803.57] Frank: at the chat so there was uh affordable computer radios that meant we could actually not just have
[812.37] Frank: like the throttle ailer on elevator rather than outputs that were kind of set by spectrum
[818.29] Frank: or someone um so basically the terrain ish that was quite important to like very inventing our
[826.37] Jack: little leash corner of the hobby do you remember your old radio that like didn't send what was the
[834.77] Jack: issue that it didn't even not only did it not send the signal long enough it didn't even have
[843.73] Frank: enough resolution so the problem was my the radio that I was trying to use in my first quad back in
[851.49] Frank: some of those ponds back in 20 oh back in the day that one 14 15 I guess um it it was a spectrum
[863.41] Frank: radio sort of it was a dsm1 radio it wasn't even dsm2 um so it basically picked the best 2.4 gigahertz
[877.89] Frank: frequency that I could find like the best channel it could find on 2.4 gigahertz and it would just
[883.25] Frank: sit there uh and that was all it was so like dsm2 picks like two frequencies dsmx and like
[893.81] Frank: fr sky stuff and everything else basically since then is frequency hopping so it just sort of
[900.77] Frank: moves around as and where it finds a good frequency but the one I had the zsm1 just stuck
[907.41] Frank: on one was just on one and if someone else powered up and started using the same one like
[912.53] Frank: if there were a load of tyrannuses around that were just hopping about all over the place
[916.45] Frank: it would mean that I wouldn't have a connection anymore so low then yeah so it was fine when I
[924.77] Frank: was flying like a fixed wing thing out the middle of nowhere all by myself but when I started trying
[931.81] Frank: to fly a quad in a field for a load of other quads turned out it didn't really work very well
[937.41] Tony: uh so yeah that's that's a pretty good one so tyrannous yeah I agree frequency hopping cheap
[945.33] Frank: radio yep yep that you could actually like change the channels and like yeah do stuff with uh
[955.01] Frank: other early ones like being able to just buy a flight controller and not like have to like make
[963.49] Frank: one or like with gyros or pulling out none you know screwdriver and oh my god yeah having to buy
[973.33] Jack: separate what was it like separate gyros or a nintendo wee numjak and then having to
[984.53] Jack: individually put them on a diy board
[988.85] Frank: uh compact goggles uh that meant we could avoid glare on screens without massive box goggles
[1004.13] Frank: you flew a screen for the longest time oh yeah I was I flew a screen until uh
[1012.37] Frank: uh almost 2018 must be like 2017 wow yeah well I just I mean I still don't really get on with my
[1023.33] Frank: fat sharks to be honest but they are more convenient they're not better than a screen in
[1028.93] Tony: my opinion but they are more convenient could you imagine people racing when having like
[1036.21] Tony: screen screen screen and sitting in front of it the distractions oh I couldn't do it
[1041.17] Tony: because like sometimes get nervous for racing that and as soon as you put them goggles in
[1045.57] Tony: and then you're in that drawing sometimes I can't even hear what's going on next to me
[1051.81] Tony: so that yeah having the goggles and just being in your own little
[1056.93] Tony: definitely good better than uh better than the screen any day for me I think it was decent props
[1063.33] Tony: because um you remember the day we used to all go down hidden valley and that was the next one on
[1068.21] Frank: the list it was just unbreakable and reasonably balanced props yeah yeah because you'd get them
[1075.73] Tony: out and it would your cod was flew great last time you put these props on and it would be wobbly
[1082.45] Tony: all over the place and then you'd look at it and it'd snap or it would just three three props gone
[1090.13] Jack: you'd be flying and eventually you'll be absolutely tearing it about because
[1097.65] Jack: one one summer me tony dan upton and oscar were all flying together and we just flew this circle
[1107.65] Jack: and it was kind of just like it was tony loved it it was left turns all the way it was left all the
[1114.61] Jack: way around and it is just and we were just hauling ass like I don't know whether hang on
[1125.17] Tony: I think I've got a video of it I've got pictures and probably video of it on my google account
[1131.65] Jack: somewhere can we can we remember when it was it was just like we were just like absolutely
[1142.85] Jack: just going for it around this like big oval it was like you know like grand turismo where it's
[1150.21] Jack: before 2016 wasn't it yeah I've got it yes I've got it so this was does it does it suck am I gonna
[1161.57] Jack: look all slim and young um this what this was seven years ago hang on let me uh wow let me just
[1171.89] Jack: let me just share this so the the best the best thing is on my on my insta
[1180.53] Jack: and I don't think I don't think it's buried we've got oh god only allow essential valley
[1189.25] Jack: yeah sheep coat yeah sheep yeah so this this little there it is that's the photo I was looking for
[1199.17] Jack: photo there and obviously I can't for some reason I won't let you share that one picture
[1210.05] Tony: yeah slim jack
[1213.89] Tony: jack looks like a child in that picture she's jack's brother tom
[1219.25] Jack: oh no jim no slim jim and there's oscar and we we just yeah like so so young
[1230.21] Jack: now let me just for some reason for some reason it won't let me won't let me
[1237.25] Tony: any of the um I can't
[1242.61] Tony: this is gonna be just circles of crap well yeah but this back then it was it was
[1251.73] Tony: oscar lang oh the jello wow I know what would this would be a GoPro two one no
[1263.25] Jack: well maybe yes oh cool probably a mobius look at that tony like this is oscar trying to teach
[1269.33] Jack: tony how quads work or about a strap I don't know I don't know stay away from that end
[1279.49] Tony: like there's no crossfire I remember this tune as well you put this together really well I remember
[1287.17] Frank: thinking this is oscar I mean the the blue in the sky looks nice but the ground looks very
[1293.65] Tony: magenta bit bit posh yeah is that a quad or a bumble though I don't know
[1303.09] Jack: it's like a real slow builder we didn't even have any um I didn't think we had any
[1309.17] Tony: gates or anything no it just went round time before date is this slow motion or is it just
[1321.89] Jack: yeah this is this is just like it's not it's a round circle how much build up can you have
[1331.41] Jack: I know this is politically incorrect but this is the retard track of Gran Turismo
[1341.65] Jack: and it was just like look at the speed man yeah and they they're like the size of buses the noise
[1352.19] Tony: not too bad on the jello really there oh yeah there's the uh there's some hobo
[1359.63] Tony: just flying by them and be all right stay in your tent yeah look at that track follow that
[1365.31] Jack: that's good track actually isn't it yeah it's just it's just a circle we were just honing it
[1370.59] Jack: all right we need to go back and do it and the the the the with our cods yeah or is that
[1378.59] Frank: where we're gonna get steven to bring out his retro quad as well look at the size of tony's quad
[1384.99] Jack: it's 250 yeah yeah it's bigger than your head tone there's nothing mini about that quad
[1395.07] Frank: most of the sheet of carbon isn't it it's like they haven't like trimmed down very much
[1400.43] Frank: anything oh my god that made like horizon angle yeah this is before before tony taught me
[1411.63] Tony: yeah you can tell because you're dipping up fighting it fighting the thingy i remember
[1418.59] Tony: remember flying like that it was horrible and then once you got it together and then you could just
[1424.19] Tony: go and be whatever angle you want it was great and how much of it as well do you think is just
[1428.83] Frank: like his camera angle is so low that he's having to like look up to see where he's going well that
[1433.23] Tony: as well yeah i think yeah i don't even think we come up there did we even have any tilt at all
[1439.63] Jack: back then oh yeah we we always had we always had a bit of tilt we weren't animals oh my first one
[1448.35] Frank: when i had when i had that one uh uh sunders ponds with the dsm one radio uh that had yeah
[1456.99] Frank: negative tilt the board camera that was just so big like the board they had the full board on it
[1464.51] Frank: they only just fitted in the frame and it was just like you could only have it at zero tilt
[1469.47] Tony: because that was the only way it fitted this is all free ash as well yeah that's not actual
[1476.75] Tony: too badly old mobius is i think we should put blocks of foam underneath them didn't we yeah
[1483.15] Tony: basically that's exactly what we do bits of rubber i remember used to use that um
[1488.83] Tony: stuff that moon gel what they used in guitars or something yeah and then you would fall out the
[1495.79] Jack: sky for no reason because because you were on the throttle so much the props would just explode
[1502.51] Tony: randomly a random point yeah you adjust and then spend half hour flying trying to find it in the
[1510.35] Tony: grasp because we didn't have beepers or anything yeah well no so if you can see it moving see the
[1517.31] Frank: grass game yeah well actually got curry obviously hasn't joined this conversation because in the
[1524.19] Frank: list we don't have uh lost model alarm at all so i don't think it was it's that big a deal but
[1533.55] Tony: it's not as big as props so
[1539.31] Jack: props yeah so let you know if you've still got moon gel can you take a photo of it and post it
[1546.59] Frank: on our discord please right after the after the props we've got serial receiver flight
[1556.27] Frank: controller connections oh my god avoiding all the rat's nest and the noise and the pwm and
[1566.03] Frank: the ppm one wire instead of ten yeah and you can tell it have you know actual the communication
[1574.99] Frank: from like your stick to the quad without it just picking up noise random voltages and things right
[1582.27] Jack: so if any of you guessed august 9th 2015 that is your answer yeah and that was it just speed laps
[1594.75] Jack: we should we should go back and do it again three three are you uh next on our list was
[1602.91] Frank: esc motor braking but yes quads could yore we didn't have to have a tricopter to be able to yore
[1612.27] Frank: and inverted tricks works and it generally flew less poo um and i think dominet clefton even
[1622.19] Frank: stuck that in there as like that was his first thing like esc braking active braking yeah yeah
[1630.43] Jack: yeah i could i could agree with that look at this old old versions of clean flight getting the
[1639.87] Jack: getting the drivers to work this is what clean flight used to look like no beater flight no dark
[1646.67] Jack: mode no nothing it was just alien will f1 cc3d 2015 look 2015 8th 19.3 stable so it was clean flight
[1664.14] Frank: then yeah 2015 14 yeah the the next sort of i mean there's a there's a bundle on here that i guess
[1675.42] Frank: all go together with that which is uh programmable escs uh and pass through so that you can well
[1683.9] Jack: pass through is very good that was my suggestion i was like it was your suggestion
[1691.9] Jack: to reverse motors in software yeah yeah god yeah so you didn't have to unsolved at them and all
[1700.14] Tony: that yeah brilliant god we were neanderthals with flying sticks
[1709.42] Frank: there was also uh one of the steven's suggestions was having usb vcp so that you didn't have to use
[1719.34] Frank: ftbi adapters and soft serial because you weren't having to use an entire uart on the flight
[1726.3] Frank: controller of which there were very few uh just to be able to connect to it to your to your
[1732.46] Frank: configurator what is it virtual comport yeah that sounds good okay with that yeah there you go
[1742.06] Jack: tutorial this was march 2018 virtual comport if you want to know we're just talking about stuff
[1749.9] Jack: and then typing it into google's uh to oscar's website yeah oscar lang that's it look man oh my
[1760.06] Jack: god yeah because back in the day if you turned off msp you weren't talking to your you weren't
[1767.98] Jack: talking to your board anymore oh my word you used to have to stick in bootloader mode and
[1775.26] Jack: keep it shorted and re-flash your recovery i just don't think other things steven also
[1782.38] Frank: suggested osd menus so that you didn't have to mess around with configurators for every little
[1787.74] Frank: thing so let's skip the configurator entirely and just do it from osd
[1795.18] Frank: makes does make things easier especially what about smart audio remote control the vtx
[1804.7] Tony: don't nasa naughty words but there you go i would say before that vtx size because you remember the
[1812.46] Tony: the only thing you could get was the v old red what were they oh god what were they um
[1819.82] Tony: immersion immersion i see massive things like that long
[1828.06] Tony: used to put on your quad and try to stick somewhere so i would say size of
[1834.94] Frank: size of vtx is for me as a big one why did they get smaller why why were they so big and why are
[1842.86] Jack: they now so small what do you know it was because antenna yeah they were using so as you can see it's
[1853.5] Tony: it's not very good photo of this no no it's one on a quad look back up yeah yeah look it's massive
[1863.82] Frank: we used to have to even put them on excuse me as big as like a 450 million power like
[1871.82] Jack: 2s battery isn't it yeah you can't really see that well maybe this one
[1880.06] Frank: my channel heatsink in there so did they just get like no that was that was shielding
[1887.98] Jack: so as you can see look this bit here there's two boards and this is just a default off the shelf
[1897.02] Jack: module that then goes on to the board so that's separate so you've got the shielding that satisfy
[1904.38] Jack: the fcc and offcom and they're good though they were good then you've got um then you've got a
[1913.5] Jack: massive switches switch for the dip switch switches chain channel he got this massive
[1921.74] Jack: connector that no one ever used and then these are the these are the end holes that connect the
[1929.5] Jack: the little off the shelf module to this and then this bit here well the this bit here is all
[1936.94] Jack: filtering i think and that is a switching voltage regulator that sort of like brings the voltage down
[1943.9] Jack: for the logic level don make sure i'm getting this right and i think this bit here where you've got
[1951.5] Jack: this discrete chip and this capacitor bridging it to ground this is the amplifier circuit i think
[1961.02] Jack: that then takes the the signal which is basically i think these like little modules were wi-fi
[1969.98] Jack: modules for like boards or you know um security cameras and yeah this amplification circuit is
[1979.66] Jack: what amplified it to 600 which we now find out that is closer to more like 900 millimeters yeah
[1987.26] Tony: i used to have a pin that i'd keep specifically to change channel with well this this is the
[1993.74] Frank: point i mean i know dominic theft and mr clean flight praise be in the chat is um having like a
[1999.98] Frank: whole little diatribe against smart audio because it's neither smart nor audio and there weren't
[2007.98] Frank: enough pins to do both on the he's saying there weren't enough pins to do both on the mcu the tbs
[2016.06] Frank: used for the vtx enough tlas there um but i mean it got rid of dip switches that it did
[2025.5] Frank: it got rid of dip switches and got rid of memorizing led flashing oh god you remember that oh my god
[2032.86] Tony: that was so one two three flash one two three long flash oh it's fat shock 12 yay one two three
[2041.42] Tony: four slash oh god that was the worst dyslexic one two three four times jacket flash oh
[2050.3] Jack: you remember that what does the blue light mean what does the negative symbol mean
[2055.82] Tony: oh god that's what that's why vtx for me was changed it got smaller
[2064.54] Frank: and to this day tony refuses to fly on anything other than r1 that's it i don't know it was just
[2070.78] Tony: easier it's probably from back then what's just mate yeah that's it um race while i'm tiny
[2076.54] Jack: everything set to that i can't change i used to make antennas that were tuned to r1 length
[2085.18] Jack: and he had brilliant signal and everyone was just like how does he do it and i'm like because
[2090.46] Jack: i know he only flies on one channel i'm gonna go for the middle of the band i just go like
[2095.9] Jack: boom full i wish we still had some of my old antennas it would have been awesome to like
[2102.06] Tony: do you remember that one you made once and it was fantastic and all yeah crashed and lost it
[2108.46] Frank: in the grass somewhere this episode was recorded in front of a live online audience downloaded
[2113.74] Frank: and edited to make sense when it played audio only sensors to please the itunes people hosted
[2118.94] Frank: on the internet forwarded through to your podcast provider downloaded playing on your device and is
[2123.66] Frank: now playing in your ears all thanks to our patreons consider joining them and you'll also get other
[2129.42] Frank: online benefits find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out on the list we do have
[2137.74] Frank: robust antennas i pagodas and dryers and things that meant so we didn't just have to
[2144.06] Frank: eyeball the you know cloverleafs ufana antennas afterwards
[2152.54] Frank: crash them or whatever and so and not only did we have like a good connection to to our vdx
[2160.14] Frank: via some decent antennas but also it meant we weren't broadcasting to every other channel
[2165.66] Frank: other than the one we were actually meant to be on you can actually have races and you could you
[2172.06] Frank: know not be seeing everyone else's travel at the same time so that was that was that helped
[2180.38] Tony: like like let's stop some of the time trial stuff look at that look at that zooming on you there
[2188.78] Frank: jack because like i don't know it just seems it just seems it just breaks instagram it just doesn't
[2199.74] Frank: uh doesn't work that doesn't work doesn't work i'm not convinced that's you jack i think you've
[2205.34] Frank: been replaced i think this is like it was his privacy it was him yeah uh i think that's that's
[2217.78] Frank: everything on our list so far we've talked about everything on there there's only one in the chat
[2221.46] Jack: got any other good suggestions for like d shot where you don't have to calibrate that was caroline
[2228.74] Jack: remember having to calibrate
[2234.58] Jack: and then back up again why you already know what the maximum already was
[2240.02] Tony: just doing it once oh my god it was the worst oh that vtx flashing i'm having nightmares now
[2246.9] Frank: thinking about it i know it's like oh no i'm not on raceband i'm on
[2254.18] Frank: band b oh it's 800 milliwatts instead of band r on 25 of those
[2264.02] Frank: i think um what else was was a good i mean i imagine that along the lines of d shot having
[2271.94] Frank: the bi-directional stuff so that you could do rpm filtering i expect a lot of people would be
[2279.54] Frank: up for saying that that was a big thing personally i haven't flown slash updated enough since that
[2288.58] Frank: happened to actually notice uh but uh i'm sure lots of people who actually can you know fly more
[2300.18] Frank: than like a few circuits a decade would probably uh probably say that's important um audio geek i've
[2309.62] Frank: got one of them still oh the big blue cloverleaf from i be crazy you say indestructible i believe
[2319.41] Frank: i bought one and i've still got my destroyed it in the same day so it wasn't indestructible enough
[2325.49] Frank: for me frank finds a way um the blue beam is that the one i think it was blue beam no blue beam
[2334.05] Tony: was mad mushroom i can't remember it's called it it did it was blue and being had a big bit on it
[2340.61] Jack: but i can't remember um so it's a whole gimbals like so you didn't have when you let go of the
[2349.89] Jack: stick it didn't just stay one side or the other so that you had to set what was it dead dead zone
[2358.05] Jack: or whatever to like 20 or whatever i've never noticed this to be a problem i used to uh open
[2367.33] Tony: my train of something well i still do loosen everything because it was very springy wouldn't
[2375.09] Tony: all of them mine are floppy now that's what the phrase said yeah no i like i like the whole
[2382.37] Tony: gimbals i don't think they were um massive enough to put in a top 10 mine yeah again i i haven't
[2389.89] Frank: flown enough to notice and that's a problem that's like for me what's really important are the
[2394.93] Frank: things that mean that you can actually have a good day's flying like the things that make that
[2400.29] Frank: difference and uh yeah i i agree i don't think the whole effect gimbals do that for me no
[2408.21] Jack: i don't feel nice so tailspin that was it fly sky f i uh fly sky i6 for poor people
[2420.69] Jack: i used to i used to flash this for people using a using like an ftdi adapter
[2428.45] Jack: we on the other end of it was this video cable and you could flash it with something called
[2433.73] Jack: bow jangles mod which gave you like 10 channels but there was it turned out later on that there
[2440.13] Jack: was some sort of problem with that was bow jangles a little mouse yeah in the longest mile that's it
[2447.41] Tony: green mile the green is it the green mile yeah green mile bow jangles the little mouse yeah
[2453.33] Tony: mr bow jangles um we have got a friend who flies that still i don't know if she still does but
[2461.25] Tony: magdalena used to fly that um whatever that was called what was it called the fire sky i6
[2471.17] Tony: yeah and i've seen her she flew miles out to sea with that and i was like oh my god she's not even
[2478.05] Tony: on crossfire or anything and she just went we loved it she so yeah i mean i think it's
[2485.57] Tony: it was pretty good for what you want wasn't it for its price and stuff you could you could get
[2492.69] Jack: into the the setting modes and go outside the 2.4 gigahertz could you turn it up and things as well
[2501.49] Jack: well yeah longer yeah longer thing be after i'd imagine you'd have to it had it did have two
[2508.61] Jack: antennas but yeah you could you know trim your antennas and get better range maybe some someone
[2517.01] Frank: done it for her mr clean flight again in the chat says dogs on leads does it for me
[2522.77] Frank: that does improve your days flying i guess does a good coat that helps i'll tell you what was
[2533.57] Jack: revolutionary right was xt60 powered glue guns and wait for it wait for it even more monumental
[2546.21] Jack: was wait for it can anyone guess what i'm thinking of sold no yes oh yeah yeah that is a really good
[2560.02] Jack: point because i remember fixing someone's cut motor wire with a cigarette lighter and just
[2569.06] Tony: yeah i i don't remember that i think that's a good one i think that could go in the top
[2575.54] Tony: that was that in the field yeah not having to go home and all that lot
[2580.82] Jack: yeah glue gun and so yeah i'll give you that the glue gun saved you tony that's what brought us
[2587.78] Jack: three all together was frank had not only a glue gun but he had heat shrink and i had a table
[2594.82] Jack: oh table yes yeah he was like the most popular i was like i i love this guy frank tone
[2604.18] Jack: i don't know whether that makes me gay for him or what but he's brilliant i had a full of equipment
[2610.9] Jack: yeah oh god look at this is the old micro min osd talking about
[2620.1] Frank: i tried one on one oh my god
[2626.74] Tony: it didn't really work for me i think they're very temperamental these that's like the signs
[2631.7] Jack: of like a modern vtx right yeah yeah not only does it have like a massive arduino chip on it
[2639.62] Jack: but then it's got the the long ass osd chip on it look at it and any guesses so this is 20 millimeter
[2652.34] Jack: 20.96 millimeters by 43.38 millimeters anyone guess how much it weighed
[2662.5] Jack: 5.5 grams with pins that's a lot someone in the chat flight one said four in one eses
[2676.62] Jack: yeah that did differently um it took a long time to adopt those because they used to just
[2682.14] Tony: explode they did when they first come out they weren't great because i remember thinking god
[2687.42] Tony: if one goes it's all gone which was annoying frank that's your board camera in a case
[2694.54] Frank: definitely my board camera before i decased it yeah uh so that is a good point like how come
[2701.34] Frank: we can now have like six s 40 amp eses that are tiny like how's how's this happens but like what's
[2710.3] Frank: changed like materials wise like it's not like we've got better copper is it like oh god remember
[2717.34] Tony: that i don't remember that jack and i remember you sitting in it in your room trying to do it
[2727.82] Tony: on one of my quads and we it was awful it worked a couple of times i think even dan upton had a go
[2734.78] Jack: multi-week osd next generation gui it was uh dominick lepton chimes in with fett technology
[2746.62] Frank: i still um i'm gonna have to like at some point do a little deep dive on like
[2751.26] Jack: what has changed in that area fets have got bigger stronger also fett smd package improvements
[2761.42] Jack: they used to just blow up man do you remember uh do you remember at the at the race that you won
[2772.22] Jack: tone where um frank frank was uh frank was like like some sort of race director or something
[2785.58] Jack: at that do you remember i had a one yeah the fire my ese blew and smoked it out yeah it was kiss
[2799.1] Frank: the one where i was the safety marshall who had not been briefed on where the fire extinguishers
[2803.42] Tony: were it's on fire you three you've probably still got that footage of that haven't you
[2809.9] Jack: yeah i was pulling bits of that ese out of my trianis case it's that's you stunk that whole
[2818.54] Jack: place up that's that's digby dan's um first build circuit 20
[2827.82] Jack: look at that look at that look at how receive receiver horrendous transmitter eses used to go
[2836.7] Tony: quite a lot i mean the 80 amp kiss was you probably just twanged something on the way
[2842.22] Jack: around and that that was it it was gone i didn't i was flying in the middle of the hall it just went
[2849.42] Frank: well that was back in the day that's what happened someone looked tip funny that was what happens
[2855.02] Tony: that's it yeah well i'd go along with some ese stuff i think yeah ese's and breaking we
[2864.22] Tony: won't put that in one category then ese's and ese breaking at the same time i think that sort
[2871.18] Tony: definitely um did something to the hobby made it better dom it's a bit late uh uh if you did want
[2878.94] Jack: to educate us about eses i've i've sent you a little link you're safe steven isn't here to
[2885.74] Jack: argue with you about beat flight i do apologize about that and i do need to have all uh i didn't
[2893.74] Jack: need to have talks about him like try not to argue with the guests it's not a good look
[2898.22] Jack: i think i don't think i needed to say that i think afterwards he was just like yeah i just
[2903.02] Jack: wanted dom to do something i'm just i'm trying to make it as easy as possible i like i understand
[2909.74] Jack: it's for the greatest of the hobby i'm coding whilst watching oh my god this is what people
[2917.1] Tony: do when they listen to the show they can get on with things and mooch around and yeah shout stuff
[2926.06] Jack: at the tv ldo's oh no i'm gonna pair my socks it's the only way i'll get through it it's the
[2933.26] Frank: life we're just like keeping some like some of the slower brain cells busy
[2940.78] Frank: getting them out of the way and then the productive ones get on with things yeah oscar
[2946.46] Frank: laying in the top ten himself yeah i have to say i do like a web page that like is just written out
[2957.26] Frank: with some pictures it's very helpful much more helpful than lots and lots of videos as much as
[2964.14] Frank: you know painless videos are very helpful i would love to be able to just kind of reread a thing of
[2971.5] Frank: them go over the same three seconds of video multiple times until i understand oh oh look what
[2978.94] Jack: i found look at that how to fix a bricked flight controller that is not a problem i've
[2986.62] Jack: had in quite a long while 2017 i don't think i can see any more flash on connect you can i've i
[2994.86] Jack: offered it if you try hard enough you can yeah frick it bricked flight multi-shot to 2016
[3004.7] Jack: in february well it's not important anymore and him what was his name the the guy preston
[3015.5] Jack: preston being like yeah it's faster than d-shot yeah that's nice p p p m first is s bus
[3024.54] Jack: this is britain fifth of october 2015 ddr2 versus x4r sb and if you do you reckon oscars back this
[3037.5] Jack: up somewhere oh mate wikipedia has i hope someone is when we get nuked we'll need this to rebuild
[3047.34] Tony: yeah it needs to be written down on stone
[3058.22] Frank: what we're looking at now is a picture of the bottom plate of a quads that is also
[3066.38] Jack: the osd and the pdb look at that oh jesus that inductor is massive that is huge
[3079.66] Jack: oh god the editor's gonna have a field day there's a couple of indian nodes in here tonight
[3086.14] Frank: i know look at it it's massive for when you want your quads to become a fireball in the mid-air
[3097.1] Jack: and there was this there what was it team something or other team whatever and they
[3102.46] Jack: actually had cutouts to try and make it a little bit lighter well they were trying overcraft
[3112.3] Jack: i've had a name they had they had like a little
[3116.06] Jack: i don't know what they called nucleus look how many different pdb's are the same quad
[3122.06] Tony: oh damn look at that look lc filter too much going on camera pads for five volt
[3131.58] Frank: your rssi pads to split it between your minim osd and your d4r2
[3141.66] Jack: wow nice yeah the xiaomi camera do you remember those yeah i remember watching one
[3150.14] Tony: oh well right then they were all right i never owned one brad has always had one
[3156.86] Jack: i had one i lost it down the steep side of um devil's die my webcam right now is a
[3164.3] Frank: like a knockoff xiaomi camera is it yeah it's like xl van i do love chinese products
[3175.34] Tony: where they just like something up like that so funny um what is that oh
[3191.1] Jack: one of them somewhere abuse mark the daisy pdb's right i think yeah the the how jack
[3203.34] Jack: can vaporize copper in seconds
[3209.02] Tony: look at the uh the old eses i used to have them what i can't remember what they were
[3214.7] Frank: emacs be a heli 12 amps so let's explain the the daisy pdb for people that are listening
[3222.86] Frank: and don't know yes it's like uh looks like looking into a flower it's like a 30 by 30 board
[3231.5] Frank: that's got it's just it's got eight kind of segments to it and each segment has three holes
[3246.3] Frank: in it and it's like a three hole soldering point so yeah join a few things together so you could
[3253.18] Frank: have your your positive and your negative uh it's it's it's just a way of joining your
[3258.86] Frank: individual eses back before uh the four way four and one eses simon k firmware on there probably
[3271.71] Tony: yep i mean i've still got loads of thin that carbon is as well look at it i'm looking at
[3279.23] Tony: it probably just snap in a minute
[3284.51] Tony: amazing it's funny this is like a trip down there look at that look at the bi-plane
[3291.71] Jack: look at a little bit of that tilt the ring camera i mean that is living 300 and so said
[3301.07] Jack: giant yeah the massive a vtx right there look how small the battery is compared to
[3309.15] Jack: everything else i know look at it it's got more LEDs put a light on it and all
[3319.1] Jack: look at it it looks like a flying double decker on fire smeared into the rubber grommet technology
[3327.42] Tony: to keep the camera steady yeah i know i like the prop nuts i want you to put a screwdriver through
[3333.66] Jack: to tighten them yeah oh yeah you got a tricopter i don't know whether you want to go down that
[3340.22] Jack: but that's that's too new that's got a serrannus and look there it is what is that plastic thing
[3351.5] Jack: there though that's what the question is any idea what let's look it's like a massive blue
[3360.38] Jack: bit of plastic oh it's like a laser card top plate for it or something yeah and look they've used a
[3368.54] Jack: aquarium tubing as a standoff so that the battery can swing back and forth
[3379.02] Frank: that was like the the anti-vibration mount yeah yeah nice yeah that's right loosely like the
[3387.98] Frank: propellers were so unbalanced that the vibration from them was that bad especially something that
[3394.62] Frank: big two motor hello fair play yeah nice motors small and again why did we have tricopters it
[3403.02] Frank: was because the only way to get something to your nicely was yeah tilt the whole motor because the
[3409.74] Tony: the ercs didn't do the motor braking all right that's it this is good i feel so old
[3416.78] Frank: too i mean carl sea is asking what's with the landing legs well you see back when you
[3425.42] Frank: had propellers made of cheese if you went too close to a blade of grass you would explode
[3431.66] Frank: they would die and cut your face off so you needed long landing legs to keep your your
[3438.94] Frank: propellers away from a blade of grass yeah back when like we weren't seeing blades of grass
[3445.66] Frank: you're lucky if we saw the horizon just like sky is higher up than the ground that's good
[3454.3] Tony: i'm still flying
[3458.86] Jack: there you go there is the fabled
[3462.78] Jack: that's it that's what we fire that together top
[3471.74] Jack: yeah of the what are they emotion i'll see antennas antenna and to get tilt for the camera
[3480.78] Jack: they just use strips of velcro
[3482.78] Jack: uh
[3487.18] Frank: simplicimes simpler days no other day look at that lot oh look it's got an abuse mask in it as well
[3494.62] Jack: with a gas butane and the solder is used for pipe work the solder's so thick
[3505.82] Jack: for copper pipe for the water you could use that for plumbing
[3509.66] Jack: god how we achieved anything we carried on well but that was the thing as well right
[3520.78] Frank: it meant that if you flew and you landed and you flew another pack you were having a good day and
[3526.54] Frank: it meant that like you know everyone who got together and had these kinds of experiences
[3532.62] Frank: of flying a pack that was an achievement you all celebrated when everyone managed to achieve it
[3538.38] Jack: i remember my first completed battery like i don't know when anyone does like that was an
[3546.38] Jack: achievement to land with an empty battery without anything exploding without me crashing
[3554.3] Jack: like it took me years it probably took me two years before i was like oh my god i finally
[3559.02] Frank: finished a battery i mean i'm still looking forward to the day where i finished the day
[3565.74] Frank: because i've run out of batteries and not run out of quads or talent yeah look at that
[3573.1] Jack: a real insight that's a ps3 for any of you who it is with the slide in top ones yeah
[3582.46] Jack: look at that this is where you needed two computer screens to be able to get through it
[3588.38] Jack: tunes and one one to like open 700 tabs
[3596.86] Tony: oh it's brilliant though it brought us all together jack yeah yeah i know
[3603.98] Jack: look at those are those turnigy battery straps i hate them if anyone's got any of them
[3608.62] Jack: they can send me on fire burn it god damn they never stopped did they they were they were
[3615.9] Jack: basically cable tidies they weren't battery straps they're for what you use to like tidy up
