[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to Carlos Campos, Art Faulkner, Sam Dahmer. [19.68] Frank: On with the show. [20.68] Jack: Hello and welcome to Let's Drone Out. [57.86] Jack: Hello. [58.86] Jack: Today's the 23rd by Cole's recommendations or knowledge. [67.82] Jack: I believe he put into Google when spring is in Britain and it was currently started on [74.42] Jack: the 20th. [76.94] Jack: That's not accurate. [78.34] Jack: And Curry is outraged. [80.34] Curry: I'm outraged. [81.34] Curry: Now, maybe in Canada where they say, oh, only one moose related death, that means it's spring. [87.7] Curry: Over here, it's we got gales and rain. [91.1] Jack: That's not very springy weather, unfortunately. [94.02] Jack: No, anyway, tonight you are joined by everyone's favorite curry kitten. [100.14] Jack: Hello. [102.34] Jack: Everyone's favorite moustache, Steven. [104.62] Jack: Cheers. [105.62] Jack: Hello. [106.62] Jack: And everyone's favorite. [109.46] Jack: Apparently it's spring. [110.94] Jack: God damn you, Canadian girl. [114.7] Stephen: And Jack, who's waited until we've gone live to start eating a Kit Kat. [118.98] Stephen: Perfect. [119.98] Curry: Don't you dare break it off properly. [124.46] Jack: Curry's back. [126.26] Jack: So that means that I need to do this. [129.9] Curry: I'll kick you out. [131.9] Jack: Oh, no. [133.9] Jack: So bad. [135.9] Jack: I'm sorry. [137.9] Jack: I'm savage. [139.9] Stephen: Outrageous. [141.82] Stephen: Did you buy that Kit Kat just for that? [144.08] Stephen: If you maintain the ratios just so, is there a correct way to eat that fashion curry or [148.52] Stephen: is it how to be finger by finger? [150.44] Curry: No, it's obviously finger by finger. [153.2] Curry: It's not just an OCD thing. [155.76] Curry: It's like you get to enjoy little borrowed chocolate by little borrowed chocolate. [161.04] Curry: You wouldn't eat a Twix like that, would you? [162.28] Curry: You wouldn't just unwrap it and stuff both in your mouth. [165.28] Curry: No, I wouldn't. [166.28] Stephen: I'd never do that. [167.28] Koel: Exactly. [168.28] Stephen: I've seen it done. [169.28] Stephen: There's situations when you don't want the wafer crumbs everywhere, you've got to think [171.44] Stephen: about that. [172.44] Jack: Yeah. [173.8] Jack: For our audio listeners, I opened a Kit Kat that had four fingers and I randomly took [180.32] Jack: a bite out of them without breaking them individually. [185.44] Jack: And this is like an animal curry. [187.44] Koel: Well, that's for me. [189.44] Curry: I'm just thinking, I'm trying to think if there's an exception to the rule with Japanese [192.6] Curry: Kit Kats because they're so damn small and come in interesting flavours. [197.04] Curry: Are those the green ones? [199.04] Curry: There's hundreds of flavours of Kit Kats in Japan. [202.04] Curry: Yeah. [203.64] Curry: Kit Kats is one of the worst. [205.64] Jack: It's to do with... [206.64] Jack: It's not even a good flavour for tea. [208.64] Jack: Yeah, it's something to do with luck. [211.64] Jack: It has the same character as luck and you buy Kit Kats as presents and you can write [221.12] Jack: little good luck with the exams and stuff. [226.12] Stephen: So, yeah. [229.12] Stephen: I don't know, as presents go, Kit Kat really says... [232.32] Stephen: I was at the petrol station, but I was pushed for time, so I skipped the flowers section. [237.32] Koel: Yeah. [238.32] Koel: Sounds about right. [239.32] Jack: Have you been out flying a Soul Steven or have you been daddy-doggy? [245.98] Stephen: Oh, yeah. [246.98] Stephen: We got a little Schnauzer, which is a German colloquial, I understand, for a moustache, [252.98] Stephen: but not of the handlebar variety, of the walrus variety. [256.98] Stephen: So an inverted version of what I have. [259.98] Stephen: She's just waxed it down. [262.98] Stephen: Well, yeah, then it just gets in everything. [265.98] Stephen: She's a lovely little Schnauzer that we're calling Bob, short for Kate. [270.98] Stephen: And, yeah, seems to be settling in very well. [274.98] Curry: I like the logic on the shorter names there. [276.98] Curry: That works. [278.98] Curry: Bob. [280.98] Curry: Bob. [281.98] Curry: Short for Kate. [282.98] Stephen: Nice. [284.98] Stephen: How's everyone else been? [286.98] Koel: Not too bad. [287.98] Koel: I'm in the process of moving and I've had 36 showings in the past 12 days. [293.98] Koel: It's amazing. [295.98] Curry: 36. [296.98] Curry: He literally wants to kill people. [297.98] Koel: And no one's going to take our place. [299.98] Koel: So we're going to have... [300.98] Curry: Is this people coming to see you or you going to look at other places? [303.98] Curry: No, no, no. [304.98] Koel: People coming to our place while we're home and... [307.98] Koel: 36. [308.98] Koel: 36 and 12 days and they've had one offer and then the one person who was part of the offer [314.98] Koel: is not taking it. [316.98] Koel: So, yeah, I'm estimating I'll have about 100 viewings before I leave this place. [324.98] Koel: And still no one's going to take it. [326.98] Koel: I don't know who's that. [328.98] Stephen: Yeah. [329.98] Stephen: At least there's two of you there. [331.98] Stephen: So if one of you is indisposed, you don't have to freak out. [335.98] Koel: Yeah. [336.98] Koel: It's fine. [337.98] Koel: I'll survive. [338.98] Koel: It's annoying, but it's not the end of the world. [342.98] Koel: Yeah. [343.98] Jack: Yeah. [344.98] Jack: I have done nothing. [345.98] Jack: No. [346.98] Curry: Do you think the problem is, Carl, that maybe people saw the show and you had that virtual [351.98] Curry: background and they're like, that looks like a great place. [353.98] Curry: Let's see it. [354.98] Curry: And they get there. [355.98] Curry: It's like, this is a hovel. [356.98] Curry: I don't like it. [357.98] Curry: That sounds pretty accurate. [358.98] Koel: That sounds pretty spot on. [360.98] Koel: They're like, wait, this isn't what we saw and that's thrown out. [364.98] UNKNOWN: That's it. [365.98] Koel: There's never enough space for a piano in here. [368.98] Koel: What were you filming? [370.98] Koel: Yeah. [371.98] Koel: Yeah. [372.98] Koel: The most I have done in the past week is I am building my new Apex and I am now currently [380.48] Koel: putting my motors on my ESC, so that's fun. [384.98] Koel: Cool. [385.98] Koel: Yeah. [386.98] Jack: I'm prepping him for his Kiss Ultras, so hopefully he can just plug it in and then go. [394.06] Koel: I just want to be fully prepared and get her done. [399.42] Jack: Yeah. [401.1] Jack: How did you find it, Stephen? [403.22] Jack: Was the show okay? [405.9] Jack: Is it reinforced? [406.9] Jack: Yeah. [407.9] Stephen: I mean, I wanted to know more what was going on under the skin, you know, to know why. [412.46] Stephen: But when we started talking about the, there's this thing that tightens up the pits and makes [418.82] Stephen: it feel more concentrated or less, I just wanted to know what was going on with that. [424.46] Stephen: And obviously you get to a point where with Kiss, because it's based on closed source, [430.58] Stephen: you're not talking about the feature anymore. [432.78] Stephen: You're talking about the implementation and it's just a, yeah, trade secret, can't talk [436.98] Stephen: about that, which I think that's my biggest sort of frustration. [441.5] Stephen: You get to a point, you're like, oh, that's really interesting. [443.66] Stephen: So what's that doing exactly? [444.66] Stephen: Oh yeah. [445.66] Curry: I can't tell you. [446.66] Curry: I did watch the show last week and I was much more convinced having listened to the guy. [454.26] Curry: You just get the vibe of what he's doing and what he wants to do and that impressed me [459.66] Curry: more. [460.66] Curry: I still didn't really get why he still called it Kiss Ultra because it's like, well, we [465.06] Curry: want to do something different to Kiss. [466.98] Curry: I wasn't clear if he took the code from Kiss and made Kiss Ultra or it's a whole new implementation [471.78] Curry: in which case he called it something different. [473.7] Koel: Well, I think he, well, correct me if I'm wrong here, Jack, or if you know better than [478.3] Koel: me, but I mean, he had a huge part of Kiss originally, right? [483.22] Koel: So he's kind of taking what he did and carrying it on, I guess. [491.02] Jack: He reckons he's got nine or 10% in the code. [494.78] Jack: That's what he said on the show. [495.78] Jack: Yeah, 2%. [496.78] Jack: Left and the original Kiss. [499.42] Jack: And I think the main thing of it is because he was involved with Kiss, I think there's [508.14] Jack: a little bit of, he now knows how the sausage is made. [513.22] Jack: So there's going to be whatever he writes is going to maybe, this is me just theorizing [521.46] Jack: that there's going to be sort of people asking, well, did you get this from Kiss? [529.06] Jack: Is it all completely rewritten or he's standing on the shoulders of giants and he's got that [536.98] Jack: sort of bit that he likes of Kiss and he's leaving that in there. [542.1] Jack: And he's doing key things like adding like OSD and everything. [550.14] Jack: And it's built on Kiss. [554.3] Jack: I mean, his company is named Kiss or Kiss Ultra. [558.78] Koel: It's just a trade name like you said, right? [564.46] Curry: He knows how it works. [565.62] Curry: He's re-implemented perhaps the same stuff, perhaps in the same way or similar way or [569.62] Curry: perhaps differently, but kind of similar and then he's taking it from there. [573.54] Curry: Yeah. [574.54] Curry: Anyway, yeah. [575.54] Stephen: Like he was trying to say that it was more like beyond Kiss, the way he was describing [578.74] Koel: it. [579.74] Koel: Yeah, exactly. [580.74] Koel: Yeah. [581.74] Curry: Yeah. [582.74] Curry: I still think it's an odd naming choice, but you know, he used it that way. [586.3] Stephen: Yeah. [587.3] Stephen: I'd really like them to be able to make a clean split completely from Kiss. [590.78] Stephen: That would be great. [591.78] Stephen: I kind of get to a point where it is its own thing. [594.98] Stephen: I think that's going to be very healthy once the project gets to that point. [597.82] Koel: I guess if that is the case, though, then like, where does that leave Kiss? [602.14] Koel: Because... [603.14] Stephen: Dead? [604.14] Stephen: Yeah. [605.14] Stephen: I mean, where does that leave base flight? [606.14] Koel: Yeah. [607.14] Jack: Dead. [608.14] Jack: Yeah. [609.14] Jack: Where does that leave clean flight? [610.14] Jack: Yeah. [611.14] Jack: You know, stuff just moves on, you know, and Kiss, you know, like, yeah, Kiss hasn't, unless [619.26] Jack: we can get Paul on here, which I've asked several times, Paul of, you know, Paul Blake [629.38] Jack: from Kiss, you know, but, you know, it's kind of like, why are we still talking about Kiss [636.42] Jack: when the last thing we had off them was, you know, Kiss V2 and, yeah, 25, what was the [646.38] Jack: last product? [647.38] Jack: 25 amp BSCs, I think. [650.02] Koel: This thing right here. [651.02] Jack: Yeah. [652.02] Stephen: Yeah, well, the singles. [653.02] Stephen: Yeah. [654.02] Stephen: You know. [655.02] Stephen: Which people probably wouldn't run on anything above a three inch these days. [658.46] Koel: But 25 amp? [660.46] Stephen: I've got... [661.46] Koel: Yeah. [662.46] Koel: I'm running it on four amps, on a five inch. [665.5] Stephen: Yeah. [666.5] Stephen: But if you look at racers now, like the Mamba Race F75 is very popular. [671.7] Stephen: It's nothing below a 55 amp, really. [674.94] Stephen: Yeah. [675.94] Stephen: Well, obviously those claims are often spurious and they're not good for the paper they're [680.86] Stephen: written on. [681.86] Stephen: But people are definitely, like I've done full throttle punch outs over a hundred amps. [686.66] Stephen: So 25 amp a corner is just going to be dead on a punch out. [690.62] Jack: Hazard says he thinks it's the all in one. [693.86] Jack: Huh. [694.86] Jack: Yeah, it could be. [695.86] Jack: Yeah. [696.86] Jack: I don't know. [697.86] Jack: But, you know, I have got a spare board, so if you are curious and you'd like to have [705.58] Jack: a go, let me know. [707.34] Curry: I was just going to say, I'm curious to know what it's like to fly outside because I don't [711.06] Curry: think it's happened since January something. [713.86] Curry: Yeah. [714.86] Curry: It's been that bad. [716.14] Jack: I think I'm now agraphobic. [718.94] Jack: That's how much I haven't gone outside. [721.94] Stephen: I've got a couple of things on my desk that I was flying outside a bit earlier. [725.98] Stephen: I've got a little like 2S guy with an AIO. [729.9] Stephen: That's a proper AIO, everything. [732.18] Stephen: You plug a camera into it and the motors and you're done. [735.42] Stephen: It's got the receiver, the VTX, everything on there. [737.7] Stephen: That's kind of magic. [738.7] Stephen: That performs surprisingly well. [741.86] Stephen: And then like a five inch with HD zero, not HD zero, a walk snail. [746.78] Stephen: Yeah. [747.78] Stephen: And I'm busy ripping out all my HD zero stuff because I'm just, I think I'm done with that, [751.26] Stephen: to be honest, at this point. [752.7] Curry: I think I'm seeing color theme coming along here, Stephen, where everything has to be [757.1] Curry: yellow. [758.1] Stephen: Oh, that's orange. [759.1] Stephen: I'm having something, something of a renaissance. [761.26] Stephen: I used to be a bit, everything must be black and I just got tired of it. [765.42] Stephen: So yeah, I just, just having a bit of a laugh with everything right now. [769.66] Stephen: It becomes anti-golf. [770.66] Stephen: Why not? [771.66] Stephen: Yeah. [772.66] Stephen: Why not be silly? [773.66] Stephen: Too old to care what people think. [776.9] Jack: Have you worked on, Carl? [779.74] Stephen: Keep going. [780.74] Jack: Do it again. [781.74] Jack: Yeah. [782.74] Jack: Three more times. [783.74] Stephen: So yeah, with FETEC and KISS, I like those projects. [787.14] Stephen: I worry about the bus problem, the classical term in software engineering, like what happens [791.9] Stephen: if someone gets hit by a bus? [793.94] Stephen: It's a very macabre way of stating it, but it's real and I'd love for there to be not [798.82] Stephen: just a community around it, but a way of ensuring that if anything, God forbid, happens to anyone [805.5] Stephen: who's involved in making and designing that, that their work can live on. [810.3] Stephen: And I think that that's one of the aspects that I often like about open source with KISS. [814.82] Stephen: I just hope that can happen, you know? [817.02] Curry: Yeah. [818.02] Curry: So should we suggest that he has to sign into like his own repository once a week or it [823.18] Curry: ultimately gets uploaded to GitHub or something? [827.47] Stephen: I'm not going to say what the guy should do. [830.03] Stephen: It's just a concern, you know, it's got a distinct flight feel and a lot of people like [833.95] Stephen: it and it would be a shame if, you know, for whatever reason that vanished. [838.23] Stephen: We had a case with BlueJ recently, well, I say recently, probably six or eight months [843.07] Stephen: ago, where the guy who was originally working on BlueJ decided to step away, had personal [847.99] Stephen: reasons for doing that. [849.15] Stephen: That's fine and well. [850.51] Stephen: But a lot of the stuff like the GitHub repos, the Discord servers, the whole community was [857.67] Stephen: linked to him and he just stepped away from it. [862.51] Stephen: So in that case, it can be quite a challenge. [864.79] Stephen: I've seen that happen with BlueJ, luckily, we have kind of a couple of guys who took [871.59] Stephen: over, Daniel and Chris, who are running ERC configurator and now working a lot on BlueJ [878.31] Stephen: and they're pushing it ahead, but they had to move everything to a new Discord, move [881.95] Stephen: everything to a new GitHub. [883.75] Stephen: And there's still people who, you know, crop up on the old Discord and post all sorts of [888.27] Stephen: dodgy stuff now and then and no one's admin who can get rid of it. [892.03] Stephen: So it's a bit of an issue. [893.75] Curry: Well, yeah, exactly the same thing happened on Open HD with one guy moving away who seemed [900.71] Curry: to have all the binaries hosted on his personal computer and nobody could rebuild them and [906.75] Curry: they've had to basically go back and reconstruct it from base now and try and move the flight. [912.03] Curry: What's happened in Open HD land because you were tracking that pretty closely. [915.83] Curry: Yeah, I've still got two things ready to go. [919.71] Curry: They did the announcement about the new version, which is still in beta and it's missing some [926.91] Curry: of the new bits and bobs. [929.05] Curry: This is like the completely rebuilt thing, which has a lot more native code in it and [934.99] Curry: stuff which people are testing and there's also like a Linux client for it so you can [941.43] Curry: like run it off a laptop on your on your base and stuff. [944.31] Stephen: Yeah, I've got an option so much more varied because you used to have a have to have Raspberry [949.27] Stephen: Pi and it didn't work on other boards, right? [951.67] Curry: That's right. [952.67] Curry: So that they've expanded that. [953.67] Curry: So it's the Jetson Nano was I think one of the ones that's that's official now. [959.79] Curry: They haven't got like a Windows or Mac client. [962.67] Curry: But they were also I've got a much better implementation of cameras so it can take basically [969.43] Curry: USB cameras instead of like just this couple of cameras that worked with the right chipset [974.59] Curry: and would do it right. [975.71] Curry: So I think they're there I I've not I've I've got like two models ready to fly using the [981.15] Curry: old version but I've been away from flying and do anything with it for so long. [985.47] Curry: I don't know what I can't even remember how to fly anything. [988.17] Curry: That's how long it's been very sad. [990.75] Curry: But I did order myself something. [993.07] Curry: Oh, this is this is my big news. [995.79] Curry: We have drum rolly thing ordered some nice now kit. [999.99] Curry: Oh, oh, very good. [1003.03] Curry: This was it was a bit of a flute, because what happened is someone from walks now contacted [1008.91] Curry: me while I was on holiday said I'd love to work with you. [1011.99] Curry: I said me too. [1012.99] Curry: Well, it's actually Cadax because we rated Cadax very highly didn't we at the end of [1018.35] Curry: the year? [1019.51] Curry: I'd like to send you the HD kit, which was the VTX and the camera and I'm like, that's [1027.71] Curry: fantastic. [1029.11] Curry: I don't have any goggles. [1030.11] Curry: Are you going to give me the goggles? [1031.35] Curry: I'm like, no, can you not instill it on a car or something? [1034.27] Curry: I can. [1035.27] Curry: It's not going to work very well. [1036.27] Curry: So I've got any goggles. [1037.71] Curry: And so the the the app in short short story is they they didn't want to give me the goggles, [1044.75] Curry: but they said we can give you 30% off the goggles or anything you want to order, which [1049.23] Curry: I'm allowed to say. [1051.27] Curry: And I was like, okay, but so I had stuff in my basket. [1055.51] Curry: And that very same day, I just happened to go to YouTube. [1057.63] Curry: And the first thing I saw was painless, talking about walks now V2. [1061.23] Curry: Oh, and so what there's there's new ones, quick, empty the basket. [1066.39] Curry: And so get that low light camera. [1068.75] Curry: Yeah, what I managed to do is I've ordered the goggles and the basic V2 VTX with the [1077.35] Curry: 32 gig thingy that works in gyro flow. [1081.07] Curry: And they're sending me for free as the review thing, the low light camera. [1085.87] Curry: So the pro version. [1086.87] Curry: So I'll have two VTXs to play with, and some goggles. [1090.19] Curry: I thought put one in a quad, put one in a plane, drive flight at night, if I can go [1095.71] Curry: outside. [1098.47] Curry: There have been some good days, but it's kind of been like, oh, I'm having to do something [1103.71] Curry: or Pip has stolen the car and I can't go out. [1106.75] Curry: It's because flying for me now is a bit of a palaver, it used to be the case that I could [1110.51] Curry: walk 10 minutes down the road and have this like empty field. [1114.39] Curry: And then they built houses there. [1115.71] Curry: So now it's like load up the car, drive for half an hour, walk through the cows, decide [1120.79] Curry: which field is less Cowie or less full of maize, and then try and fly there. [1126.11] Curry: So it's it's needs planning now. [1128.63] Koel: Yeah, that's what it's been like for me, living here in Toronto. [1132.35] Koel: It's like, I can't fly anywhere unless I go for a half an hour drive. [1136.75] Koel: So it's yeah, not fun. [1139.75] Koel: Well, it's not that it's not fun, it's just it's a little bit more inconvenient. [1145.51] Curry: Yeah, it just means it has to be a bit more planned previously, if like, if the forecast [1149.51] Curry: is bad, and then it comes out good, I could quickly charge up a couple of batteries and [1153.39] Curry: go out. [1154.39] Curry: Nowadays, it's like, oh, the forecast looks good on Friday, I'm charging up some batteries, [1158.03] Curry: and then it changes and it's rubbish. [1159.31] Curry: And it's like, oh, that's another week, a week of non flying has gone. [1164.55] Curry: And I've got this really, really tiny plane that I've been sent, which is so tiny, it's [1172.41] Curry: this big. [1173.41] Curry: And if you know, Caroline tells me she's flown something similar in about 10 miles now. [1179.93] Curry: That's an issue one. [1180.93] Curry: It's got this little, little auto scene, which looks quite a good fun, but beyond about Caroline [1187.97] Curry: says 10 miles now in the manual, it says five to seven. [1191.57] Stephen: That's the one with the very easily detachable propeller, so you don't chew up the gears, [1196.81] Jack: that's amazing. [1199.41] Curry: They look good fun. [1200.41] Curry: And it's, I've played with it at home and you know, you flick it on and you do this [1203.89] Curry: and the little all the surfaces go. [1206.73] Curry: And yeah, they look good. [1207.93] Curry: But I don't think I've ever been to that field. [1211.09] Curry: And it's been as low as seven miles now, which is right on the coast. [1214.49] Curry: So wind blows over. [1215.53] Curry: So it might just have to be stress tested as long as it's not raining shopping cart. [1221.49] Stephen: I think they're also made by Volantex it's because he sheen is just a rebrand for whatever's [1226.01] Stephen: going cheap. [1227.01] Stephen: Right. [1228.01] Stephen: And so I think it was originally a Volantex thing. [1230.21] Curry: And that's now so it could be yeah, there's there's a few around, but that looks fun. [1235.25] Curry: And I've got one of the new zode planes coming, was it called the zode drift, a dark drift. [1243.65] Curry: Something it's, it's come out before, but now it's colored in black. [1247.91] Curry: So I've got like loads to fly, but I need like a week of not crap weather. [1254.53] Curry: And I'm just going to load the car up and sit in the field with the cows and have fun. [1258.85] Curry: So I'm fingers crossed that like I'm ordering this new kit on the basis that we will get [1264.67] Curry: good weather. [1266.17] Curry: And we look forward to it. [1267.65] Curry: It's just it's so it's so much hassle trying to fly in between crap weather. [1273.53] Curry: It's like it's just it's not fun going out in mud and rain and cold and just like you [1282.69] Stephen: know, it's going to be like dash over, try and disconnect the lipo before it catches [1287.93] Stephen: fire. [1288.93] Stephen: Yeah, clean the mud out of everything. [1291.49] Curry: When I went out for fun and flew that 450. [1294.61] Curry: And I forgot what happened to it. [1296.17] Curry: But basically, the camera disconnected and I had to bring it down in the field. [1300.21] Curry: That field was so muddy. [1301.61] Curry: I almost like sank up to my knees in the mud trying to wade through it. [1306.57] Curry: And hopefully, my brother in law didn't see me doing that making these huge footprints [1310.71] Curry: through his through his field because it's like, that's my crops. [1315.31] Curry: It's like, oops, the crops are probably screwed already. [1320.07] Curry: Yeah, that's that was that's my thing as well. [1322.71] Curry: Let's see. [1323.71] Stephen: Hopefully, I was looking forward to the walks now camera. [1328.47] Stephen: There's two that came out. [1329.59] Stephen: So there's a V two micro 19 mil. [1333.07] Stephen: And then there's a V two micro low light, which is I think marketed as a pro camera. [1339.43] Stephen: And that's got a Sony star vis sensor basically works with very, very low light input and [1347.25] Stephen: still renders a decent image or be it with a bunch of noise and that just looks perfect [1353.03] Stephen: because one of the problems I had originally with walks now was big muddy blur in the UK [1358.67] Stephen: with indistinct lighting through the autumn, it was just all the big smear. [1362.89] Stephen: So I'm really hoping that that star vis sensor is going to pick up the contrast a bit more, [1368.67] Curry: not just for nighttime, but for bad days to Yeah, yeah, I noticed that with the the [1374.23] Curry: original footage people are getting and I sort of that the reason I decided to go for [1378.51] Curry: this because it was still like, even with the discounts are still over like $500 worth [1383.15] Curry: of stuff. [1384.15] Curry: Thank you, patrons. [1386.59] Curry: It's like, they're not currently the best clearly a DJI is doing better. [1392.39] Curry: But I think they seem much more responsive to what people are telling them and what customers [1398.51] Curry: want from them. [1399.87] Curry: And hopefully they're going to continue to develop that. [1402.03] Curry: I thought I think hc0 has got promise. [1404.07] Curry: But because they're, they're really focused towards low latency, that's that's not really [1409.19] Curry: my my bag, I'm just happy flying and having a good picture and I'm not too worried about [1413.75] Curry: the latency from that point of view. [1416.15] Stephen: Also you've got to ask what what is best? [1418.61] Stephen: Is it to end up with the best footage after your flight? [1422.61] Stephen: Or is it to have the best flying experience? [1425.07] Stephen: I think DJI gives you the best footage after your flight, you've got probably the best [1430.15] Stephen: stabilization because you can just flick a switch and have their inbuilt stabilization [1434.39] Stephen: instead of trying to tune gyro flow off to the fact. [1437.79] Stephen: And it's got more cinema kind of color grading and contrast to the camera. [1442.39] Stephen: But when you're actually flying, if you look at a lot of the footage, that's going to give [1447.15] Stephen: you a much darker image, it's going to give you a less contrasty detailed image. [1451.03] Stephen: So that can be harder for flying. [1453.19] Stephen: That can be a worse flying experience. [1455.15] Stephen: Whereas I think walks now that they gave you a better experience when you're flying with [1459.11] Stephen: a slightly sharpened image, and they brought out low light camera. [1462.31] Stephen: So you're going to have an easier time even on overcast days or flying later. [1468.58] Curry: So what do you think is best? [1470.82] Curry: We cross things. [1471.82] Curry: I just didn't want to have to like, oh, okay, you just need to sort this out by first hacking [1475.3] Curry: the firmware off of it and putting something else on to make it work adequately sounds [1479.66] Curry: like a bit of ball ache to me, so yeah, walks now one there. [1484.86] Stephen: Yeah, yeah. [1486.82] Stephen: And people post in there about the polar camera. [1489.22] Stephen: That was good. [1490.38] Stephen: But it looks like this, the cadex pro camera is going way beyond like, you thought about [1498.54] Stephen: that the pro camera, the polar camera being good, well, compare that to kind of the sort [1504.06] Stephen: of flying you'd be able to do on an analog or a tell, think about sort of light levels [1508.7] Stephen: you can fly in with that, where you can just barely see the field in front of you and you [1513.34] Stephen: put the goggles on and it's just like, oh, yeah, it's a little bit overcast. [1517.14] Stephen: But off we go. [1518.14] Stephen: You know, you can see [1519.14] Curry: for my neighbors to look forward to me wandering around in the dark wearing goggles holding [1524.26] Curry: up a quad. [1525.26] Jack: Yeah, you know, walking through your, you know, that little side alley bit is very, [1534.38] Curry: very dark. [1535.38] Curry: That's so dark. [1536.38] Jack: I remember that's the old curry kitten we know and love. [1540.34] Curry: The olden days of walking around and having lots of cameras to test. [1543.98] Jack: No, no good old days. [1548.62] Jack: How was the mini thing that you got sent? [1551.34] Curry: Oh, I was just flying in front of you guys. [1554.46] Curry: It was all right, actually. [1555.98] Curry: It's only a little toy quad, but it costs $15. [1560.1] Curry: And as I was saying in my fun review, last week, I was paying that more than that for [1566.26] Curry: a cocktail on the cruise. [1568.62] Curry: And it's the first, I thought I'd check it out because A, it was so cheap and B, it had [1573.06] Curry: a out hold, which actually works really well indoors. [1576.22] Curry: So I could put it up, take my hands off and it would just sort of sit there. [1580.94] Curry: So I think, I think there's various ways of getting into the hobby. [1584.58] Curry: My preferred way would be, okay, you want to FPV, you should start out on a sim, get [1589.3] Curry: yourself a radio, learn muscle memory, see how it is to fly, then get yourself a nice [1593.22] Curry: five inch and tune it so it's nice and gentle and start taking it out that way. [1599.64] Stephen: So the first thing people should do is to buy a hundred pound radio and learn to configure [1604.18] Stephen: open TX and then plug it into a simulator and learn how to map all the channels as the [1609.06] Stephen: first, literally the first thing people should do and then eventually be able to throttle [1613.66] Stephen: up. [1614.66] Curry: Well, I, I was always about, when people first started flying, there wasn't, there wasn't [1620.54] Curry: as many sims about and it was a bit hard, but I was also, I was always saying, like, [1625.74] Curry: learn how to fly acro, just tune it very gently and you'll be good because you'll, you'll [1630.34] Curry: understand that you need to keep your fingers moving because I've seen people argue this [1635.54] Curry: all the time. [1636.94] Curry: People automatically started out in angle and stuff. [1639.82] Curry: And as soon as they try flicking modes around, they get confused, they, they, they go back [1645.62] Curry: to angle and then the angle fights you and even horizon fights you. [1649.18] Curry: And I was like, an acro, an acro, yes. [1652.9] Curry: So I am all about that. [1654.14] Curry: But this, this is the very much like, if you really want to just dip your toe in or buy [1658.62] Curry: something for your 10 year old, this allows you to fly around the house and not screw [1664.56] Curry: things up too much. [1666.66] Curry: It was, it was all right. [1667.66] Curry: It was nice just to fly something through the house. [1669.74] Curry: That's right. [1670.74] Curry: I mean, I could, I could just go and get a quad out and fly it around the house, I suppose. [1675.5] Curry: But half the time I've got other people in the house doing conference calls. [1678.46] Stephen: Like one of those cine whoops and calmly fly it around the house, like even outside [1686.22] Curry: a three inch cine whoop scares the bejesus out of me. [1690.06] Curry: It's like you started 10 feet away from you and you just throw it all up and you're like, [1694.9] Curry: Jesus, it's on top of me. [1695.98] Curry: Where is it? [1696.98] Stephen: I was still over there, but it's just no one ever takes the audio off the GoPro with those [1700.7] Stephen: things. [1701.7] Stephen: I swear. [1702.7] Stephen: It's always something like a nice Foley track with like leaves rustling or the wind blowing [1706.38] Stephen: and you're like, that's not, that's not the experience at all. [1708.82] Curry: It's like, that's not it. [1711.62] Curry: And then then you're like, oh, I wonder if it's going to come back on fire because it's [1714.66] Curry: so hot with those little motors carrying all that, all that stuff. [1718.58] Curry: And let's just put a GoPro 11 on it because that anyways, about four kilos. [1722.14] Stephen: Take the battery off really quick because it's so hot. [1726.18] Stephen: You just came to an entire like 1300 mile battery in like two minutes flat. [1731.58] Stephen: It's going off boiling hot. [1734.14] Curry: That's crazy. [1735.74] Curry: I still, I still didn't understand that. [1739.46] Curry: I mean, they were a bit of a fad at the time, but people bought them for the wrong reason. [1744.9] Curry: I kept, because I reviewed a bunch of them and I kept saying, I don't quite understand [1749.14] Curry: why they're here. [1750.14] Curry: If you're buying one, you should be filming commercially and not wanting to hurt people. [1755.58] Curry: Don't buy this because you think, oh, this is handy. [1758.82] Stephen: It has stopped the props for our audio viewers, Jack showing a picture of someone walking [1763.26] Stephen: around a football field and he's got the DJI Cadex polar, which is doing a fair job, [1768.18] Stephen: but the Avatar HD pro next to it, you could see things like the pitch markings and stuff, [1773.74] Stephen: which are visible on that. [1775.06] Stephen: And they're not showing up on the polar, which is nice. [1779.26] Stephen: It's it's going to be viable on the polar. [1781.82] Stephen: And I've flown outside with that. [1783.62] Stephen: You kind of, you can tell where the sky is because the horizon lines are visible, but [1788.26] Stephen: it's a little bit scary when you get close to the ground because you can't figure out [1792.14] Stephen: quite how close you are to that massive dark soup beneath you. [1796.46] Stephen: Whereas I feel maybe a bit more comfortable flying, flying low with the HD pro. [1801.62] Curry: You know, a camera's doing well when you put the goggles on and you can see more than your [1806.98] Curry: naked eyes can see. [1808.22] Curry: It's like, this is, this is impressive. [1809.86] Curry: This is bringing light that you can't see. [1813.74] Curry: Of course, it doesn't work in no light. [1815.38] Curry: It works in low light. [1816.38] Curry: So yeah, there's a limit to it, but the little light that's there will get amplified quite [1821.18] Curry: a lot. [1822.18] Curry: I mean, you can see that the walk snails noisier, but it's still giving you more detail, isn't [1827.22] Stephen: it? [1828.22] Stephen: Suffering a bunch from YouTube there as well. [1829.54] Stephen: I can see there's a lot of blockiness, unfortunately. [1832.34] Stephen: But yeah, the graffiti on the wall is a lot more readable than it is. [1836.34] Koel: But you know, one thing that I wondered about it, though, is, is it that the camera is really [1840.42] Koel: good or is it that the processing is really good? [1843.26] Stephen: Yeah, yeah. [1844.26] Koel: Because I don't I, I look like, you know, you see, you see, oh, it's so good in low [1848.46] Koel: light, but it's it's just a noisy mess. [1850.98] Koel: Well, I think they're just doing processing and they're just bumping up the ISO. [1855.3] Stephen: They did make a big deal of the Sony sensor they specifically put into this model. [1859.18] Stephen: Yeah, it was like, eighth of an inch starvis sensor or something. [1863.1] Stephen: Yeah. [1864.1] Curry: I mean, if it's purely ISO, then it gets really, really noisy. [1868.34] Curry: So it's a combination of I'm sure, as you're saying, Cole, there's a certain amount of [1871.98] Curry: processing going on, but the sensor is more sensitive and can pick up. [1876.14] Jack: The biggest part is it looks it looks different just on my screens alone, because I've got [1889.3] Jack: two screens and I'm sending one to the stream. [1895.02] Jack: It looks different. [1896.02] Koel: Even that's probably it might be your monitor calibration. [1901.5] Stephen: As with everything visual, your mileage may vary. [1905.14] Stephen: You know, you've got to try it firsthand. [1907.78] Curry: You can see the poll is slightly wider. [1910.18] Curry: Can't you? [1911.18] Curry: There's a different lens, perhaps. [1913.78] Curry: Yeah. [1914.78] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [1915.78] Jack: It's both pretty usable. [1918.14] Stephen: Yeah. [1919.14] Stephen: Yeah. [1920.14] Koel: Yeah. [1921.14] Koel: Well, and like you said, like, you're not going to fly and know there's almost no point. [1929.22] Jack: Thank you, Caroline, for sharing that. [1932.1] Stephen: There might be something where you could put some nice bright LEDs on the drone and, [1936.58] Stephen: you know, actually have a decent flying experience, which is I've still got some that was given [1943.82] Stephen: to us by menace. [1945.38] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, downloaded and edited to [1949.5] Frank: make sense when it played audio only sensors to please the iTunes people hosted on the [1954.34] Frank: internet, forwarded through to your podcast provider, downloaded playing on your device [1958.54] Frank: and is now playing in your ears. [1960.46] Frank: All thanks to our Patreons. [1962.86] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. [1966.14] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out. [1971.3] Jack: Does anyone remember the like, you know, big massive torch thing that had like a spotlight? [1980.94] Stephen: I think torches work less well because you end up just with a circle of ability and you [1985.7] Stephen: don't know what's outside the circle until you move. [1989.98] Jack: There was like the like I infrared I. Oh yeah, people used to take the IR filters off, didn't [1998.22] Stephen: they? [1999.22] Stephen: And then put I LEDs on. [2000.22] Stephen: Yeah. [2001.22] Stephen: Yeah. [2002.22] Stephen: I think it's a bit easier when your altitude as well. [2003.74] Stephen: Like if you're in a plane or a quad high up, it's, it's not too much of an issue flying [2008.02] Stephen: at night. [2009.02] Curry: No. [2010.02] Curry: Landing's interesting though. [2011.62] Koel: Yeah. [2012.62] Curry: I remember my, my one proper night flight I had and it was the case of, uh, I was, I [2017.5] Curry: was in a big slur and I was chasing my other friend and we were sort of out a distance. [2022.3] Curry: When I was coming into land, my friend could see the LEDs I had on the wings and I'm coming [2027.78] Curry: and I was like, is it all right? [2028.98] Curry: Yeah. [2029.98] Curry: He goes, keep coming, keep coming. [2030.98] Curry: And then he suddenly shouted pull up because all he saw is my, my lights disappear and [2036.82] Curry: then worked out that I must be behind a tree that was just about a hit. [2039.78] Curry: So we had to suddenly pull up and then get over the tree. [2042.66] Curry: And then I had no idea that we were coming towards it was very dark indeed. [2047.54] Curry: Terrifying. [2048.54] Curry: Yeah. [2049.54] Curry: It was interesting. [2050.54] Curry: All the same. [2051.54] Stephen: Oh, I noticed for people running max that a trip simulator has just added max support. [2059.3] Stephen: So another one. [2060.3] Curry: Oh, I thought that was, I thought that was, um, uncrashed had just added Mac as, as trip [2065.94] Curry: done it as well. [2066.94] Curry: Trip has as well. [2067.94] Curry: I think. [2069.5] Stephen: I've got a little new, oh, uncrashed Mac OS. [2072.42] Stephen: Yeah. [2073.42] Stephen: I think cause trip, uh, released that snow map and they had max support with that snow [2077.34] Stephen: map. [2078.34] Stephen: And yeah, it looks like uncrashed has as well. [2081.66] Stephen: Or am I getting confused and I've mixed, no, no, there is a new map that they've both released [2086.26] Stephen: new maps with, uh, with uncrashed. [2089.5] Stephen: We've got a stadium at animated monster trucks, which sounds really cool. [2093.22] Stephen: Actually, it sounds like a lot of things. [2095.38] Stephen: And then there's some snow level on, um, on trip. [2099.18] Stephen: I haven't tried it out yet because you've got both, haven't you? [2101.94] Stephen: Yeah, I do have both. [2102.94] Stephen: They're sitting there in steam and, uh, they've just updated themselves. [2106.26] Stephen: So I will have to give it a go. [2108.86] Stephen: I'm just looking at steam and it's downloaded a bunch of updates. [2111.9] Koel: Yeah, I haven't, I haven't had a chance to fly since, um, since I was in Taiwan. [2117.5] Koel: That was the last time I flew. [2118.5] Koel: It was in January. [2119.58] Koel: So it's, it's been a while. [2121.98] Koel: I'm sorry. [2123.98] Curry: I was just going to say you did a lot of flying. [2125.74] Curry: I think you've had your, your allocation for the year. [2129.1] Curry: That's your quarter. [2130.3] Koel: Yeah. [2130.94] Koel: Oh, we got Marcel off access. [2132.74] Koel: Always stoked to see a Canadian on the panel. [2134.78] Koel: Hey, local Canadian. [2136.02] Koel: How's it going, man? [2137.3] Koel: We got some Canadian viewers. [2138.78] Koel: Awesome. [2139.86] Koel: I think he said he was from Vancouver earlier. [2142.5] Koel: Um, so he was flying on the West coast, which is nice. [2146.22] Curry: Sweet. [2147.34] Curry: It's definitely nice in Toronto. [2148.74] Curry: You've got to say that. [2149.58] Curry: Yeah. [2149.98] Koel: No. [2150.62] Koel: Oh, oh, oh, oh, Vancouver is actually in Toronto. [2152.5] Koel: Yes. [2152.78] Koel: Yes. [2153.18] Koel: You're absolutely right. [2154.38] Koel: No, Toronto is. [2156.14] Koel: Yeah. [2157.58] Koel: Cole's saying that because they have better weed anymore. [2163.66] Koel: Very often it's legal to do what you want. [2170.82] Stephen: I've got to go to Canada sometime. [2172.46] Stephen: I've always got sent over to the US on work trips and, uh, never to Canada. [2177.22] Stephen: I've seen enough for the US to last a lifetime, I think. [2180.18] Jack: Yeah. [2181.22] Jack: I found it. [2183.06] Jack: There was a guy selling these, the IR. [2188.78] Jack: Uh, yeah. [2191.3] Jack: And I'm hoping there's no link testing out the CL CJL tech. [2203.32] Jack: I am familiar. [2204.56] Stephen: Someone was making us think about this IR specific camera. [2209.88] Curry: Isn't it the night eagle too? [2211.8] Curry: Simple as that. [2213.2] Curry: The run cam one. [2215.04] Jack: No, it's that black box. [2217.8] Curry: Oh, it's the module that goes into the GoPro seven. [2221.84] Curry: Oh, I see. [2223.72] Jack: Interesting. [2225.52] Jack: I'm just trying to see, uh, here we go. [2229.0] Stephen: I found, I found the CLJ tech. [2234.16] Stephen: Yeah. [2235.0] Jack: There you go. [2235.88] Jack: There was this guy. [2237.04] Jack: Yeah. [2237.44] Jack: And then I had like IR LEDs. [2240.52] Stephen: The IR plus provides an extremely bright infrared flood light with an [2244.96] Stephen: even wider angle spread of light. [2247.12] Stephen: Perfect for use with action cameras. [2251.07] Curry: It strikes me that does it work though? [2253.99] Curry: Cause it's like, can you project IR light that far? [2258.95] Stephen: Not usually. [2260.07] Stephen: No. [2260.35] Stephen: I mean, yeah, you can see here. [2261.79] Stephen: There's kind of halo effect. [2263.51] Stephen: He's got maybe five, 10 meters in front of the quad and trees are just [2268.47] Stephen: appearing out of the darkness in an alarming way. [2271.31] Stephen: He's racing, but he's able to do that. [2273.15] Stephen: Cause he set up a bunch of bright gates to aim for. [2275.51] Jack: Here we go. [2277.79] Jack: We got some, I think if he would be stuck. [2283.51] Curry: I'd like to see it in without the gates. [2285.39] Curry: Cause this is this, this is the idea of this is works in pitch black [2288.27] Curry: cause it's providing its own light source. [2290.79] Curry: It's putting out IR lights with an IR sensitive camera. [2293.23] Curry: So therefore let's see what it can do. [2296.75] Jack: This was like back in the day. [2299.95] Jack: Not equal to, but yeah, very, very interesting. [2306.78] Jack: It's the product I remember. [2310.18] Koel: So I got a, I got a quick question for everybody since I'm in the [2312.58] Koel: middle of doing a build, do you guys get super irritated during a build [2316.74] Koel: and how finicky everything is? [2318.38] Koel: Or are you just like, it's fine or what's your guys' opinion on, on builds? [2325.06] Curry: I don't like building that much. [2327.86] Curry: And I find it kind of annoying. [2329.38] Curry: So what I do, I set myself little, little micro goals. [2332.74] Curry: Like I'm going to do this bit, like this session and the next bit, that session [2337.74] Curry: and do little chunks at time rather than just sit down and try and do everything. [2343.18] Curry: Cause, uh, I don't like it. [2345.06] Curry: Yeah. [2345.98] Curry: I know it starts out very, very tidy and becomes increasingly bad as I go. [2351.22] Curry: Yeah. [2351.42] Koel: The more, yeah, the more you, the more time you spend at once, the worse [2354.62] Koel: you're, you know, you're just like, Oh, we want to get this over with, right? [2358.34] Koel: Yeah. [2358.42] Jack: You, you get, you, you get project fatigue. [2361.86] Jack: Yeah. [2362.78] Jack: Yeah. [2363.54] Jack: You know, and I kind of get round that by, um, yeah, like just doing certain [2371.66] Jack: bits when I feel up to it, because I've also got the whole thing of, I get. [2378.38] Jack: Disturbed quite easily when I'm in the middle of stuff from going to the toilet. [2384.5] Jack: All the time. [2385.58] Jack: Oh, I have to have quite a good memory on how stuff goes back together or where I [2392.98] Jack: exactly was, I take a while to G myself up and get in the mindset for it. [2398.38] Stephen: But once I start, I tend to sit for like six or eight hours and [2402.22] Stephen: just make everything perfect. [2404.62] Stephen: And Marcel say, like, tape the motor wire down, cut the motor wire to length, get [2409.98] Stephen: all the ESC stuff done to start with test the ESC, flush the ESC. [2414.38] Stephen: And then get the FC on there, get the FC up and running and start putting [2419.62] Stephen: peripherals on it and usually get the receiver on there first and then the [2422.9] Stephen: VTX and then I'll add GPS at the end. [2425.5] Stephen: Yeah. [2426.5] Koel: That's about it. [2427.34] Jack: Well, you haven't got to do it all in one. [2429.18] Koel: What I did with this one is I put the frame together, I think maybe like a [2432.18] Koel: couple of weeks ago, I like put the camera in just cause I thought, okay, [2436.74] Koel: whatever, it's easy to just chuck it in with the plates. [2439.78] Koel: And then if the plate stays stuck, I always hate turning upside down. [2443.38] Stephen: The camera just falls out. [2445.78] Stephen: Yeah. [2446.3] Koel: I don't have that issue, which is kind of nice. [2448.1] Jack: That's, that's what, I think that's what happened to me on when I went out and [2453.22] Jack: flew, we used to even went to fly that success and obviously the camera had [2459.14] Jack: come, you know, fallen out and unplugged itself just enough to not work. [2464.82] Jack: Yeah. [2465.54] Stephen: Especially with the digital systems where the camera's always like plugged [2468.9] Stephen: in with the most fragile wire. [2470.62] Stephen: I always get worried about that. [2472.3] Stephen: And I'm like, I'm going to put it in last. [2474.18] Stephen: And then I have to manage to get that fragile wire strung between the front [2480.62] Stephen: of the quad through the flight stack into the back. [2483.42] Stephen: So I often end up like, Oh God, right. [2485.82] Stephen: I'm just going to take the AC and everything off and then run the wire [2489.62] Stephen: under the ESC where it can take the shortest path between the VTX and the [2493.3] Stephen: camera, so I've got a bit of slack for moving the camera. [2496.58] Stephen: I have completely dismantled quads after the, hello, you're good at reading. [2501.46] Jack: I'm so sorry, Stephen. [2503.66] Jack: Also off-axis FPV says, I love building as long as I have time to plan it out [2508.38] Curry: and buy the right part, the right parts, dry fitting the parts is super key. [2512.58] Stephen: One cell percent, that is getting them out of the box, put them on the frame. [2517.14] Stephen: Look at them. [2517.82] Stephen: Think is that going to reach? [2520.42] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [2520.86] Stephen: And that point order any extra connectors and cables, if it's not going to work [2526.18] Stephen: like with the DJI stuff, they supplied a 12 centimeter cable and there are some [2531.5] Stephen: frames where you need a 13 centimeter cable and so you had to like unplug that [2537.5] Stephen: 12 one and there was a 14 centimeter one you could order and that was just perfect. [2541.38] Stephen: But you would be screwed if you waited till the last possible moment. [2545.3] Stephen: Yeah, I ran into that yesterday. [2546.78] Koel: I was putting the XT 60 on my ESC and I was like, oh yeah, this is perfect. [2550.5] Koel: It'll be great. [2551.14] Koel: And then I just, I trimmed it like a centimeter, like not even a centimeter, [2556.06] Koel: like half a centimeter too short on the one on the positive lead. [2560.06] Koel: I was like, Oh, I have to like, I had to remake the XT 60 lead or the positive lead. [2566.7] Koel: I had to, you know, find some wire, scrap it and put it all together and he harvested [2573.06] Koel: a balance. [2573.66] UNKNOWN: Yeah, I heard that. [2575.1] Jack: He harvested a balance. [2576.3] Jack: Yeah, I harvested some. [2577.3] Jack: So he's like committed. [2578.66] Koel: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [2581.58] Koel: Got to do what you got to do. [2584.26] Jack: Steven, do you want to read this one out? [2586.42] Stephen: I was just going to say, speaking of hacking, I, I decided to do a little project work here. [2593.78] Stephen: Let's just solo me. [2594.62] Stephen: Yeah. [2595.22] Stephen: So I, I've been messing around with headphones and I decided to make these old [2599.7] Stephen: grados, uh, pluggable. [2601.26] Stephen: So I put like a 2.5 mil jack in each side. [2604.62] Stephen: That's been my latest little, little doodah. [2608.5] Stephen: Yeah. [2609.42] Stephen: So I have to be doing soldering, but just not FPV stuff. [2613.1] Stephen: Right. [2613.46] Stephen: So Brandon beans, I set aside one or two days for customer builds and about [2619.18] Stephen: one to two weeks for my own builds. [2621.34] Stephen: I'm really finicky when it's for me. [2623.02] Stephen: And I just repeat what I've done for others pretty much. [2626.1] Stephen: If you know, it works, then why bother questioning yourself? [2629.78] Stephen: Right. [2630.66] Stephen: Numskull FPV. [2632.46] Stephen: I had to resold as someone's first quad build the other week and they were amazed [2636.42] Stephen: at how shiny and clean my balls were. [2640.18] Stephen: Yeah, you are. [2642.22] Curry: And how was your soldering? [2645.58] Curry: Yeah. [2648.9] Stephen: Lots of flux. [2650.34] Stephen: Lots of flux is key. [2652.46] Curry: Yeah. [2652.94] Curry: I may have some bills coming up. [2654.3] Curry: One of my, um, one of my old flying friends is reducing his fleet somewhat. [2659.06] Curry: So he's asked me if I want a bunch of his stuff. [2661.42] Curry: So amongst that is a skipper, which is a plane that, um, it's a wing. [2667.46] Curry: You can take off from the water, but he's also got his old tricopter there. [2671.3] Curry: And I was wondering, Oh, should I convert my tricopter and try to see what happens [2675.54] Curry: when you put modern stuff on it? [2677.06] Curry: But it's got too many, too many important memories. [2679.62] Curry: It's too nostalgic. [2681.46] Curry: So I thought, Oh, I can just use his. [2683.82] Curry: When he, when he gives that to me and see what happens if we put like tri-fly on it [2688.14] Curry: and a digital servo and other stuff, will it, will it fly? [2692.26] Curry: Will it still fly? [2693.1] Curry: Nice. [2693.54] Curry: Or is the whole tricopter thing? [2695.86] Curry: Just see the old rose tinted spectacles. [2699.26] Jack: I spoke to David and I said, like, you know, do I need to, yeah. [2707.14] Jack: And, um, you know, I was like, do I need to stick the road in on or whatever? [2712.22] Jack: And he was just like, just stick normal beat of flight. [2714.38] Jack: It flies so much better than any. [2716.38] Jack: So apparently tri-fly isn't a thing. [2719.58] Stephen: Oh, that's the tricopter, tricopter mixer works just fine. [2724.22] Stephen: Just enable the extra servo. [2727.74] Jack: I think with the breaking and everything and the notch and with a standard [2736.38] Stephen: PID controller rather than like three different experimental options for PID [2739.9] Stephen: controllers that you had to try for yourself. [2742.06] Curry: Yeah. [2743.82] Curry: That'd be interesting because we're still talking about 10 inch props, [2746.38] Curry: which beat of flight usually isn't particularly great on. [2750.26] Stephen: People are flying cine lifters on those with like 10 kilo cameras. [2753.9] Stephen: So it can do 10 inch props. [2756.46] Stephen: Yeah. [2757.74] Stephen: Yeah. [2758.42] Stephen: You see, it's very much built around 5 inches, isn't it? [2760.9] Stephen: People are flying those big Hollywood like proper 4K and 6K cameras that [2766.06] Stephen: weigh a couple of kilos at least. [2767.94] Stephen: And some people adding like a full gimbal arm on that as well. [2772.26] Stephen: So yeah, it could do it. [2774.14] Stephen: It's just going to be outside of the normal five inch tuning envelope. [2777.78] Stephen: So be prepared to scratch your head and think about things for a little while. [2782.14] Stephen: Oh, I don't like thinking about things. [2785.66] Curry: Oh, it's my brain. [2786.82] Curry: It's too old. [2788.14] Curry: Yeah. [2788.86] Curry: Well, just run emu flight then you should be fine. [2793.14] Curry: I haven't, I haven't tuned anything in beta flight for like years and [2797.22] Curry: it's all changed and it's got these funny filters. [2800.3] Jack: Yeah. [2800.74] Jack: I think for Curry as well is that, you know, like the, it's surprising [2806.26] Jack: what an adaptive filter and breaking ESCs do. [2811.18] Jack: If you're still flying it with the old ESCs, then yeah. [2816.34] Curry: We've got to take the ESCs away. [2818.18] Curry: We're still going to fly it with DT 750s because it's a dry copter and [2823.54] Curry: it's going to have wooden arms, but we'll update modern ESCs that can run D shot. [2828.98] Curry: We'll put an up-to-date flight control on it. [2832.1] Curry: Um, and yeah, we'll see what happens. [2834.18] Stephen: Yeah. [2835.02] Stephen: Get RPM filtering into the mix. [2836.78] Stephen: So you've got that adaptive filters, your flight control knows how [2840.9] Stephen: fast the props are spinning. [2842.34] Stephen: It can cut out all those resonant peaks from the resonance of the motor spinning. [2848.62] Stephen: It's much better. [2851.74] Curry: We'll see. [2852.38] Curry: Anyway, I've got, I've got to collect all this stuff. [2854.66] Stephen: There's, there's less to it than when you started out. [2856.94] Stephen: It's just in different places. [2859.26] Curry: So it's all filtering instead of pits. [2861.5] Curry: Pits was easy. [2862.14] Curry: It's just like change that one, change that one, do that one. [2865.5] Stephen: The filters are pretty straightforward. [2866.94] Stephen: You start out with your pits at default, turn down feed forward, turn down your D [2872.7] Stephen: max, so everything is just predictable. [2875.54] Stephen: And then you just start cranking up the filters until it misbehaves [2879.18] Stephen: and then back it off a notch. [2881.38] Curry: That's it. [2882.5] Curry: There's still room for auto tuning. [2886.1] Curry: Will it ever come back? [2886.9] Curry: Was auto tuning and clean flight that once? [2889.5] Jack: Yeah. [2890.02] Jack: And it was shocking. [2891.58] Curry: It was amazing. [2892.78] Curry: I used to, I remember, I think I've got a video about it and you put it up there [2896.7] Curry: and you hit tune and the quarter goes and it goes that and it goes that and it does [2901.82] Curry: this for a while and then it drifts away down the field and then you've got to get [2908.86] Curry: it back to do this. [2910.9] Curry: I was just going to say, I managed to get it done where it did the forward-back [2916.98] Curry: with stuff and then it's like, okay, I'm going to save the pigeon and I'm going to [2920.54] Curry: fly it and it flew like a bag of it's like worse than the defaults. [2925.18] Curry: It was, it actually detuned itself so badly. [2928.86] Curry: What was your thing, Jack? [2930.9] Jack: Mine shook violently and then just took up and then flipped over and then just sucked [2938.58] Jack: itself into the ground and smashed. [2941.86] Jack: That's the risk. [2943.46] Stephen: But by saying auto tune, you're automatically telling people to stop thinking and that's [2948.82] Stephen: a dangerous request to make when people have got like potentially damaging electronics [2954.5] Stephen: to play with. [2955.46] Stephen: You want to get the brain fully engaged before you do that. [2958.1] Curry: I'm not saying stop thinking. [2959.3] Curry: I'm just saying some of this stuff should be automated because it knows, it kind of [2965.82] Curry: weird. [2966.26] Curry: I'm shaking. [2967.1] Curry: I should, I should do something about that. [2968.98] Curry: What should I do? [2969.62] Stephen: I think that's kind of the idealist take on it because the reality is you end up with [2974.74] Stephen: people who instead of actually learning how to build something, watching some videos and [2979.3] Stephen: doing it properly, just throw together any bag of crap and then hit the auto tune button [2984.34] Stephen: and then complain when they like chop the end off their finger or something. [2988.5] Curry: Well, it works for singing. [2989.86] Curry: You just hit auto tune. [2990.94] Curry: It's all fine. [2991.66] Curry: So it can work for quad design. [2993.58] Curry: Yeah. [2994.42] Koel: So speaking of auto tune. [2996.34] Koel: So on camera gimbals, like there's a DJI camera gimbal and basically it has an auto [3003.38] Koel: tune feature, but yeah, when you use that feature, it, it sucks. [3007.22] Koel: Like the gimbal is not, it doesn't look like it's floating afterwards. [3010.54] Koel: You have to manually do it. [3012.22] Stephen: Like, and they know that gimbal, that's a single model that they've had in their labs [3017.7] Stephen: and they've made sure the auto tune works on it. [3020.26] Stephen: If you put auto tune on some random bag of bits that someone's bought off Bangor. [3024.34] Stephen: Yeah. [3026.5] Curry: Here's, here's what I miss. [3027.62] Curry: And when you guys did the last bit of the comparing brands, when I had to leave early [3033.86] Curry: and I'm just about to leave early again, one thing you missed off when you talked [3038.06] Curry: about immersion RC was the range of vortex copters and their pre-tunes that [3044.14] Curry: they put in there were so perfectly done. [3047.06] Curry: Um, obviously, you know, more people are building them than making, uh, RTFs, but [3052.98] Curry: there, there's a real spot for people to have an RTF, which is just tuned perfectly [3058.94] Curry: out of the box and has a couple of alternate tunings for people. [3062.9] Curry: That would be amazing. [3064.78] Stephen: This looks like a really, you know, if you look at the big names, uh, which would be [3070.82] Stephen: in this day and age, I guess, Diatone, iFlight, iFlight pretty much nailing it [3076.78] Stephen: time and time again for bind and flies. [3079.06] Stephen: Now you can go and get the iFlight commander radio. [3082.06] Stephen: You can buy the iFlight bind and fly and you're there, right? [3086.42] Stephen: You need your goggles. [3087.14] Curry: They're doing well. [3088.06] Curry: Holy bro do very well. [3089.54] Curry: iFlight do very well. [3090.66] Curry: Just nothing was quite tuned. [3092.3] Curry: I mean, it was celebrity tuning. [3094.22] Curry: You had the final glide Oz tuned and that was, that was exceptional. [3098.94] Curry: That, that quarter was really good. [3100.7] Curry: I still, I still like that the Mojo 230. [3103.62] Curry: I've got around anyway. [3104.7] Curry: I've got it. [3105.1] Curry: I've got to get off my last week of disappearing early. [3107.94] Curry: I'll leave you guys to finish off. [3110.3] Jack: It's lovely to have you back. [3112.34] Curry: Thank you. [3114.06] Stephen: Good to see you, man. [3115.26] Jack: Sorry for the kick out. [3116.66] Stephen: So we've had some people talking about WTF OS in the chat of Brandon [3120.78] Stephen: beans and, uh, numbs and others. [3123.78] Stephen: And so for those who are not in the know, if you've had DJI for a couple of years, [3129.1] Stephen: you've probably had to deal with this because DJI kind of stopped bothering to [3133.62] Stephen: even kick the can down the road on their FPV system before Oh, three came out. [3138.06] Stephen: And so if you wanted anything done, you, you needed to use this WTF OS. [3142.34] Stephen: Um, and that was a system that shortcutted a lot of the hacking and rooting [3148.02] Stephen: and updating that you could do on the DJI system. [3151.7] Stephen: And it did it through the chromium browser. [3154.94] Stephen: So anything that's Chrome based, whether it's Chrome itself or edge. [3159.06] Stephen: They've got the same browser guts and everything except the iPad and [3163.46] Stephen: iPhone versions of those products. [3165.78] Stephen: It works. [3167.14] Stephen: You plug in via USB and just the same as if you use ERC configurator.com connect. [3175.38] Stephen: It's going to say I've detected a thing. [3177.14] Stephen: You pair it and off it goes. [3179.26] Stephen: There's a big root button. [3181.3] Stephen: It tells you blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, done. [3184.22] Stephen: And then you install WTF OS, which goes blah, blah, blah, blah done. [3188.26] Stephen: And then you've got the option to install a whole load of little packages, [3190.86] Stephen: which give you things like the HD OSD gives you automatic, um, recording [3196.38] Stephen: and some overrides for bit rate and other tweakables that you weren't [3199.98] Stephen: able to get from DJI. [3201.7] Stephen: Um, so, so that's the long and the short of it. [3204.06] Stephen: And they've just updated this system last week. [3206.98] Stephen: Uh, the update consists of moving some stuff that was advanced options that [3212.06] Stephen: you had to go in and type command lines, moving those into the GUI and giving [3216.18] Stephen: them nice friendly names, which pretty much puts a bow on the whole WTF OS body [3221.78] Stephen: of work. [3222.94] Stephen: So now it's super easy to go and do that. [3226.18] Stephen: I think they've also got some OSD overlay stuff. [3229.5] Stephen: So if you have your OSD recorded, um, you can take the DVR and you can [3235.5] Stephen: lay that back on using an online tool processes, the video of you. [3239.42] Stephen: So that's the deal. [3240.9] Stephen: That's cool. [3242.06] Jack: Do you chroma key the overlay out or is it doesn't chroma key it, it, so it, it [3249.78] Stephen: gets the video and then it knows what commands were sent to the OSD display. [3257.54] Stephen: And it just records that stream of OSD commands and then like replays them, [3262.58] Stephen: creates the text and overlays it onto the video. [3266.26] Stephen: Yeah. [3266.7] Stephen: Nice. [3268.62] Jack: That's pretty sophisticated. [3270.14] Stephen: That's pretty sophisticated. [3271.66] Stephen: It means that the files are editable and they're not gigantic. [3275.86] Stephen: Yeah. [3276.1] Jack: Tiny. [3277.14] Stephen: Yeah. [3278.62] Stephen: Yeah. [3278.98] Stephen: So it's recommended. [3281.18] Stephen: Oh yeah. [3281.62] Stephen: I'd say if you're running anything but the O3 system, it's, it's essential. [3286.66] Stephen: I really wouldn't try and fly it. [3288.22] Stephen: And I wrote that beta flight hack to, to get extra data in the craft name field [3294.22] Stephen: a while ago, but since WTF OS has been out there, I'm just using that instead. [3299.46] Stephen: It gives you so much more. [3300.9] Stephen: It looks so much nicer. [3302.98] Stephen: You can swap around all the fonts and things and you can [3306.3] Stephen: have fonts with colors in them. [3308.34] Stephen: Just looks awesome. [3309.3] Stephen: So, you know, when your battery is low, the indicator is going to go red [3313.66] Stephen: and start pinging at you. [3315.3] Stephen: It's, it's just great. [3316.42] Koel: It's really useful. [3320.55] Koel: I'm an old analog boy. [3321.87] Koel: So, yeah. [3324.67] Jack: Yeah. [3324.91] Jack: Same here. [3326.11] Jack: You've got Currys abandoned me to Caroline Tyler. [3329.59] Stephen: It actually uses this web protocol called web USB. [3333.75] Stephen: So that's part of the chromium Chrome underlying framework. [3338.43] Stephen: So that's why it works. [3341.03] Stephen: It's a, it's not windows specific. [3342.83] Stephen: It's a Chrome API. [3345.63] Stephen: Well, it's cool. [3347.79] Koel: Yeah. [3348.27] Jack: It's a happy little thing is, um, I believe the gives ultra [3354.19] Stephen: connects to a web GUI. [3358.67] Stephen: And as Caroline points out, it can generate over the video from the goggles, [3363.47] Stephen: but you can overlay, um, onto the HD video as well, which is nice. [3369.27] Stephen: That's cool. [3370.11] Stephen: So if your video started recording and you're able to sync up to the [3372.75] Stephen: start of the flight, then yeah. [3374.79] Stephen: Put it on your GoPro. [3376.79] Jack: I'm sure, yeah, I remember like, that's how Andy RC done it. [3381.91] Jack: And so that's why I asked about the Chrome. [3384.79] Stephen: I'm, uh, yeah, he did a little teaser ages ago, didn't he? [3389.35] Stephen: But he was able to render that and then chroma keyed on it. [3394.38] Stephen: It looks so much nicer than the native DJI stuff. [3397.74] Stephen: And, um, with the oh three system, you get that functionality, but it's kind [3402.74] Stephen: of, uh, not quite there yet where the text is gigantic and it's not as [3410.06] Stephen: sophisticated as the version that's out with WTF OS. [3414.26] Stephen: So even now, DJI is still trying to catch up. [3418.74] Stephen: I'm pretty sure they will, but you know, we're waiting. [3421.54] Jack: Right. [3422.34] Jack: That by the looks of it is all we have time for. [3427.66] Jack: Uh, this show you've been listed to let's throw now is, uh, sponsored and [3432.1] Jack: supported by all our lovely Patreons. [3434.66] Jack: You guys rule, um, we'd be screwed without you guys. [3439.34] Jack: You guys are the best and your name. [3443.18] Jack: Yep. [3444.02] Jack: And the names should be all scrolling past. [3450.3] Jack: Um, if you're an audio listener, please consider joining the Patreon. [3457.1] Jack: That is where the editor cuts it out and makes it all nice. [3460.5] Jack: So it can be safely played at your workplace or in the car, your other [3466.62] Jack: family members, um, and we're torturing them. [3470.46] Jack: Uh, but we're live every Thursday from eight to nine PM UK time. [3476.54] Jack: Don't forget we will have daylight savings this, uh, Sunday. [3481.18] Jack: So we will now be an hour earlier next week. [3484.78] Jack: Oh, and if anyone has any suggestions for guests, give us a shout. [3489.46] Stephen: Yeah. [3521.5] Stephen: Call one last glimpse of that. [3522.86] Koel: So, uh, see, uh, one last thing. [3528.1] Stephen: One side down almost getting there. [3530.1] Stephen: Look at those shiny balls. [3531.7] Koel: Oh, my word. [3534.22] Koel: There we go. [3534.82] Koel: There's some shiny. [3535.62] Stephen: Oh, my way. [3536.18] Stephen: Yeah. [3536.38] Stephen: You can really see the Shane on those balls. [3537.94] Jack: Yeah, that's amazing. [3539.06] Jack: Good work. [3539.9] Jack: And I've been, I've been bright until I fly. [3542.9] Jack: Thank you guys. [3543.98] Jack: And good night. [3546.1] Jack: See you guys next week. [3548.54] Jack: See you next week. [3549.42] Jack: Bye.
