Massive thank you to. [14.0] Jack: Carlos Campos. [16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner. [18.0] Stephen: Sam Dahmer. [20.0] Koel: On with the show. [22.0] Koel: Let's Drone Out now. [52.32] Jack: Hello and welcome. [54.32] Jack: You're listening to Let's Drone Out. [57.32] Jack: Today is a Thursday and it's episode 396 so we are almost to the 400 guys. We're gonna have to figure out what we're gonna do for 400. [72.32] Stephen: Great work team. [73.32] Jack: I'm proud of you guys. I'm glad we're here. Cole's gonna be unfortunately a little bit late but today we are joined by the man with the moustache, Stephen. [82.32] Stephen: Good evening everyone and Jack lay in the fireworks for 400 if we haven't. [87.32] Stephen: Yep. [88.32] Jack: Everyone's favorite curry kitten. [91.32] Jack: Hello. [93.32] Jack: And I'm bright until I fly. Hello. [96.32] Stephen: So what's everyone been up to this week? We had a rare sunny day. A day with clear skies. [102.32] Jack: What are you talking about Monday? [104.32] Curry: The infamous Monday. [106.32] Curry: It was amazing. It was both sunny and calm. [114.32] Curry: Which is amazing because either side there was like weather warnings where it's between 40 and 50 mile an hour wind and rain. [123.32] Curry: And I managed to actually fly I think possibly for the first time this year. Maybe I went one time before. [129.32] Curry: What did you fly? [130.32] Curry: The little plane I talked about. [132.32] Curry: Oh yeah. [133.32] Curry: The one that's this big which worked really really well. Caroline in the chat said it would work well and it was really good. [140.32] Curry: Is it an E-Wing? [144.32] Curry: No, it's an E-Wing. [146.32] Stephen: It's an E-Sheen. [147.32] Stephen: It's the same as the Volantex. We were talking about this last time. [150.32] Stephen: A little 1S dropping with built-in stabilisation. It's a zero I think. [154.32] Curry: Yeah, built-in stabilisation. [156.32] Curry: There's lots of companies that make something quite similar. [160.32] Curry: And this is really good for the fact that it did work in stabilisation. [163.32] Curry: Once I put it into expert mode I kept crashing it over and over. [167.32] Curry: And this prop thing is bloody genius. [170.32] Curry: If you crash the whole thing pops up and it just goes click and the whole thing just clicks in. [175.32] Curry: It's amazing. [176.32] Curry: So I crashed this about five times. [180.32] Curry: One of which is smack straight down and no damage at all. [184.32] Curry: Squirrely? [185.32] Curry: I really enjoyed that. [186.32] Jack: Is this right? How small? [188.32] Curry: I think it's 400 millimetres. [191.32] Curry: So it's really small. [193.32] Curry: Yeah, it's 1S and you do need a very calm day for it. [197.32] Curry: But that battery ran, it said it would run for like 10 to 15 minutes and I was flying it for over 20 minutes. [203.32] Curry: Although it does include me going and finding it whenever I crashed it. [207.32] Curry: But it just went on forever and ever. [209.32] Curry: Really likes it. [210.32] Curry: Which is just as well because the quad I took I managed to forget to double check that the gyro was facing the right way [217.32] Curry: in beta flight because I just upgraded the firmware. [220.32] Curry: This is the problem quad that we talked about before and I forgot to check that. [226.32] Curry: So as soon as I put the power on it went in the air and fell down again. [232.32] Curry: Terrifying. [233.32] Curry: So yeah, I forgot to check that. [235.32] Curry: I just assumed it would be okay. [237.32] Curry: Completely my fault. [238.32] Curry: But that sorted again for next time. [240.32] Curry: So just wait another three months. [242.32] Curry: Perhaps we'll have a day like that. [243.32] Curry: We have to fly again. [245.32] Jack: You can see why I do the whole taking off with the foot thing in my room now. [251.32] Jack: Because when you finally do make it out, at least you know it is going to fly in some capacity. [259.32] Stephen: Yeah, I use a crappy 18650 2S and I put that on there and it needs like two thirds throttle to hover. [267.32] Stephen: But it's just enough to check whether it's going to freak out. [271.32] Jack: Genius. [272.32] Curry: You know when I'm slightly rushed into it because Pippa's got COVID at the moment. [277.32] Curry: So I was kind of running around after her. [279.32] Curry: And then I was just like, oh my God, there's a good day on Monday. [282.32] Curry: I need to charge everything. [283.32] Curry: And I got the batteries charged, the GoPro's charged, everything charged. [287.32] Curry: I just double checked it again on my radio to make sure the modes worked and stuff and the props were running the right way. [293.32] Curry: Didn't think to try hover because it wasn't a new build but I'd upgraded beta flight. [299.32] Curry: And it had rearranged the Giro rotation without me knowing because the previous version had the default position in a different orientation and it defaulted. [311.32] Stephen: Yeah. [312.32] Curry: So it's like, I think your Giro is at minus 180 when it should have been minus 270. [316.32] Curry: It's as simple as that. [317.32] Curry: So when you when you pitch forward, it thinks it's going that way and rolling. [322.32] Curry: So that's only going to end in tears as soon as the throttle goes up just a little bit. [327.32] Curry: It's like something's going wrong. [328.32] Curry: I have the props then spin up to try and correct it. [331.32] Curry: I know how to correct pitch. [332.32] Curry: I use these motors. [333.32] Curry: Oh, that's not doing anything at all. [335.32] Curry: That's not the right one. [336.32] Curry: At least beta flight is pretty good when you're taking off that it detects a runaway quite well. [341.32] Curry: And it's like something's gone wrong here. [343.32] Curry: I'm upside down and I don't think I should be upside down. [347.32] Stephen: There's been a bit of development on that as well because there were a couple of people who found that when they engaged beeper, [355.32] Stephen: that switching from beeper mode to like if the radio was disconnected, [361.32] Stephen: sometimes the ESCs were thinking it was PWM instead of D shot and firing up. [369.32] Stephen: So there's been some extra safety stuff there as well on the on the arming side. [374.32] Stephen: And everyone's in on it like the Blue Jay guys, the AM32 guys and beta flight devs. [381.32] Stephen: For some reason, there was there was a delay when you had the beeper on and then that you disconnected the radio and reconnected it. [389.32] Stephen: It could somehow fudge the delays such that the ESC would kind of reset into PWM mode now or something. [401.32] Stephen: And it went a little bit nuts, but that's resolved. [406.32] Stephen: It can occur with... [408.32] Stephen: Yeah, it's happened with Beale Heli 32. [411.32] Stephen: I don't think Beale Heli 32 has a fix yet. [415.32] Stephen: It's just like riding very close. [418.32] Stephen: Like there was a 320 millisecond timeout and something was waiting 250 milliseconds and something else was delaying it by a fraction. [426.32] Stephen: And it just pushed past the 320 millisecond timeout and went into PWM somewhere. [434.32] Stephen: Very odd, very odd indeed. [436.32] Jack: That's weird. [438.66] Jack: So, Stephen, you've got a little bit of news. [442.66] Stephen: I do. So this is from Twitter. [445.66] Stephen: Thanks to Frank for this excellent little tidbit from UAV Hive. [450.66] Stephen: Thank you, Frank. [452.66] Stephen: And UAV Hive has something to say about Gatwick, the old, old problem that has been here for so long. [459.66] Stephen: The latest Freedom of Information Act to drop, combined with a Ministry of Defense one some months since, [466.66] Stephen: is pointing to there having been a drone at Gatwick, likely some redacted toy that fell out of the sky of its own accord, [474.66] Stephen: probably even on the 19th at the very outset. [477.66] Stephen: And the authorities were too embarrassed to admit they'd been chasing nothing for days afterwards. [483.66] Stephen: It's in the DFT's own Gatwick incident log that London Gatwick had photos of something at the outset, which they never released to the press, [490.66] Stephen: but the photos made it to the MOD. [493.66] Stephen: Interesting that Giles York told the Parliamentary Defence Committee that no photos existed at all, [499.66] Stephen: which clearly isn't backed up by the incident log. [503.66] Stephen: Thereafter, it was panic and a load of assets deployed. [506.66] Stephen: Despite Ministry of Defense advice against it, both kinetic and jammer equipment was in place and approved for use by the end of day two. [514.66] Stephen: This was kit that was alongside the MOD and RAF. [519.66] Stephen: Sorry, this was kit alongside that the MOD RAF were deployed with, which was showing that there was no drone flying about from day two onwards. [528.94] Stephen: So there was a lot of evidence to say that nothing was in the air. [532.94] Stephen: They'd got photographs of a toy drone and they refused to release those photographs. [538.94] Stephen: They even refused to show the photographs to a Parliamentary Defence Committee. [544.94] Stephen: So someone who's gotten very, very embarrassed by this situation and instead of admitting that there was some incompetence, [554.94] Stephen: they've decided to cause a national panic. [559.94] Stephen: Great. [561.94] Curry: So it sounds like if we get this right, there was maybe a report of a drone flying, which was maybe true, [570.94] Curry: and it crashed on its own accord. [572.94] Curry: Surely the thing to do is be look at it and say, oh, it's just some plebe toy thing that's maybe just gone out of control and flown the thing. [579.94] Curry: No reason to panic here, which would be the obvious response instead of jumping up like crazy people and saying, [588.94] Curry: shut the airport, we're under attack. [591.94] Curry: I hear these things can fly for two hours in the dark and rain and might buzz our tower again and again, which seemed to be the stories coming out. [598.94] Stephen: Well, we've got this very murky situation where at the time Gatwick was changing hands [603.94] Stephen: and there was probably financial penalties associated with this type of incident that might have had real effects on the actual price that Gatwick was being sold for. [613.94] Stephen: So it's all distinctly murky. [615.94] Stephen: And I guess we'd have to really follow the money, but I'm not sure anyone's put together that trail of evidence so far. [623.94] Stephen: It appears someone somewhere needed an incident. [625.94] Stephen: They needed a spectacle and a kind of look over there, don't look over here, style of misdirection. [632.94] Stephen: And for whatever reason, they decided to point at a toy drone and tell everyone the sky was falling, as Karen says, chicken, chicken little. [643.94] Curry: If you can see the photo, I expect somewhere in Gatwick or somewhere there's a bag with a tiny drone in it marked. [652.94] Curry: Don't show this to anyone or something. [654.94] Stephen: Yeah. [655.94] Stephen: Yeah. [656.94] Stephen: Rob was flying this on his lunch break. [658.94] Stephen: Please don't mention it to anyone or something like that. [661.94] Stephen: But yeah, it seems to have just marred the whole hobby for years. [668.86] Stephen: And when we cut through all the hyperbole and hysteria, what we find is that it's entirely misrepresented and blown out of all proportion, which none of us inside the hobby were terribly surprised about, having seen the ludicrous claims that were being made, but which the general public seems to have entirely believed and seen it as justification for criminalizing the swathe of air usage. [694.86] Curry: Yeah, it was one of those interesting times. [696.86] Curry: Normally when you watch the news and it's something about a subject you don't particularly know, you just watch it and say, oh, that's interesting. [702.86] Curry: But watching this, knowing the amount of bullshit that was being spouted, it was like, oh, my God, how are they saying this? [711.86] Curry: This isn't true and all that. [713.86] Curry: It's just crazy. [714.86] Curry: I even had friends of other parents from Sophie's school at the time that were air traffic controllers that asked me directly if it was me. [726.86] Curry: It's like, it's not you, is it? [727.86] Curry: You didn't do this, did you? [728.86] Curry: I was like, no, it was Tony. [730.86] Curry: That guy on the van with the goggles. [732.86] Curry: Yes, it's Tony. [733.86] Jack: Allegedly may have been Tony. [736.86] Jack: Don't forget. [737.86] Jack: We already did the disclaimer. [738.86] Jack: It's fine. [739.86] Jack: Yeah, we didn't read it out. [741.86] Jack: Any views expressed by any guests of the show, a person who may not reflect the view of others. [747.86] Jack: Tony was there. [748.86] Jack: There was video of Tony there. [751.86] Jack: Wearing goggles. [753.86] Curry: Yeah. [754.86] Curry: Standing on the van looking very suspicious. [757.86] Curry: Yeah. [758.86] Jack: He wouldn't have picked up anything because there was a jammer there anyway because it was already pre-installed. [764.86] Stephen: It's just a ludicrous situation. [768.3] Stephen: And the trouble is I feel no matter what evidence is produced at this stage, it's made that impact. [774.3] Stephen: It's marred the reputations of many hobbyists, and it can't be undone. [781.3] Stephen: And it's really annoying that there's not going to be an apology. [785.3] Stephen: There's not going to be any recognition of actual evidence. [788.3] Stephen: It's an argument that's been made and passed and accepted purely on hyperbole, and that's the way it is. [797.3] Jack: My question for you two and anyone in the chat, do you feel that that incident has had an effect on us legally as a community? [814.3] Jack: Or do you think all the rules of registration were all coming in anyway? [826.3] Stephen: I think they're coming in, but it certainly sets the public mind against us. [831.3] Stephen: So if anyone does end up in a legal situation, then you're going to be judged by a jury, and the jury is going to have seen this kind of reporting. [840.3] Jack: A wild cold has appeared. [843.3] Curry: It definitely affected things for the worse. [846.3] Curry: It was already starting to be threatened, but as soon as that got into the public eye, [851.3] Curry: and the public being a bit stupid and misled by the news were literally saying, [855.3] Curry: these should be banned, these are terrible, they need, and really behind registration. [862.3] Curry: And I remember us arguing this at the time, and it's just so stupid. [866.3] Curry: They kept showing things like, oh, drones are dropping things into prisons, [869.3] Curry: drones have closed down Gatwick, how long before a drone takes someone out the sky and kills hundreds? [877.3] Curry: And we just made the very simple point that if you're going to do bad things, then you don't submit to registration. [885.3] Curry: People that rob banks generally steal a car for their getaway car, they don't use their own because it could be traced back. [892.3] Curry: This was also very obvious, but the government felt it's literally saying there was a drone problem, we fixed it. [900.3] Curry: We've put in these restrictions and we can do worse things. [904.3] Curry: It was just a box ticking thing, which somehow cost millions of pounds, [908.3] Curry: even though it was a simple database with like 100,000 entries, somehow cost millions to write and maintain. [916.3] Koel: Hello, Carl. [918.3] Koel: Hey, guys, sorry for showing up so late, I was stuck in traffic there. [921.3] Stephen: Coles in the west wing again, I see, where he keeps his piano and entertaining area. [927.3] Stephen: It's nice, Cole. [928.3] Stephen: I mean, you're trying to hide that room, Cole, but the amusing thing is, it's the cleanest room out of all of us. [935.3] Stephen: I know. [936.3] Stephen: Cole's like, oh, you might see a cable in the shot. [941.3] Stephen: Oh, that's terrible. [942.3] Stephen: Meanwhile, just piles of crap, littered. [947.3] Koel: Well, really, there's not that much. [949.3] Koel: There's a couple of buckets, keyboard stand in the mirror, a rack mount thing that I've put a piece of bag over. [957.3] Koel: And then that's not my desk, but yeah. [960.3] Stephen: Some nice little monitors there on the desk as well. [964.3] Koel: Oh, yes, speakers. [968.3] Jack: One day you'll have to go in there and scrape all the gunk out of that because it's conductive, all the glue they put in them. [981.3] Koel: Yeah, apparently these speakers can be bad after a while, but I've had them for like 10 years, they've been fine. [987.3] Stephen: Yeah, I went down some kind of audio nerd thing and for a second briefly considered buying active monitors and spreading them around the house. [997.3] Stephen: And then I thought better and decided just to stick with headphones because it's much, much saner. [1003.3] Stephen: And buying like random used general monitors on eBay seemed to be somewhat crazy idea. [1011.3] Koel: I got, I got me a thing. [1012.3] Stephen: GPS, GPS. [1015.3] Stephen: Is that a BN or a BE? [1017.3] Stephen: That's BN. [1018.3] Stephen: Yeah, okay. [1020.3] Jack: Did, as more stuff showed up, yeah. [1024.3] Koel: It's supposed to be here within the next five minutes, apparently, so. [1028.3] Jack: Fair enough. [1030.3] Koel: So I was going to ask you guys, what's, what's your guys' opinion on this BN220? [1035.3] Curry: Yeah, they work fine. [1038.3] Curry: It's very generic. [1040.3] Curry: It's, it's the old, I forgot what it is now. [1043.3] Curry: The, it's the same GPS receiver that lots of other things use and they seem to work fine. [1050.3] Koel: Cause I was at the store and the guy was basically saying, um, you can get that, or you can get like a Maytech one, which are apparently better. [1059.3] Koel: They have a little bit more. [1061.3] Stephen: They come with silicon cables instead of PVC cables. [1064.3] Stephen: They're a bit easier to sell. [1065.3] Curry: You bought it from a physical store. [1068.3] Koel: Yes, I did. [1070.3] Jack: I know. [1071.3] Jack: Different world. [1072.3] Jack: Go on there. [1073.3] Koel: Have you guys ever been, have you guys ever been to rotor geeks or ever shop from rotor geeks? [1077.3] Koel: No. [1078.3] Jack: I meant David. [1080.3] Jack: Where's my nice screwdriver? [1082.3] Jack: Hello, Dorothy. [1084.3] Jack: She's in the mirror. [1085.3] Jack: We see you. [1086.3] Koel: I know. [1087.3] Koel: Oh, wait. [1088.3] Koel: And there's two cats in frame now. [1090.3] Koel: There's one there. [1091.3] Koel: Yeah. [1092.3] Koel: So I finally got myself a 5.5 mil box driver and this was only like $5, which that's not bad. [1099.3] Koel: Not very deep though. [1101.3] Stephen: When you say a box driver, what's a box driver? [1104.3] Jack: Hex driver. [1106.3] Stephen: He's trying to say hex driver. [1108.3] Stephen: No, it's a nut spinner. [1110.3] Koel: No. [1111.3] Koel: Yeah. [1112.3] Koel: Oh, for five bucks, it'll do. [1115.3] Koel: Yeah. [1116.3] Stephen: I've used little sockets on mine. [1118.3] Stephen: So I've got all the different sockets for tiny sizes. [1122.3] Koel: But yeah, so Korea was actually at a physical store in the Toronto area. [1127.3] Koel: There's about two or three different physical stores around the greater Toronto area that you can actually go to. [1135.3] Koel: That is incredible. [1136.3] Koel: Yeah. [1137.3] Koel: It's pretty cool. [1138.3] Curry: They're not just because in the UK, when you go to an RC store, it was like you were stepping [1143.9] Curry: back into the 80s where there's this new technology called a LiPo battery. [1148.46] Curry: And if you wanted a 3S 2200, it would cost you about 60 pounds. [1153.3] Curry: Yeah. [1154.3] Curry: And they tried to sell you metal metal hydride first. [1156.62] Curry: Yeah. [1157.62] Curry: And they had lots and lots of Bolsa. [1159.7] Curry: And everybody that works in the store, apparently you don't know they work there because they [1162.42] Curry: just ignore you and read magazines and don't do anything. [1166.42] Curry: But I'm amazed. [1167.42] Curry: Not only are there physical stores, but they're selling FPV kit, essentially. [1172.38] Koel: Well this is basically FPV centric store. [1177.02] Koel: It's not the kind of store where you walk in, there's a big gallery and you can look [1180.98] Koel: around on the shelves and whatever it's more like, there's like, it's almost like a strip [1186.42] Koel: mall. [1187.42] Koel: Do you guys know what a strip mall is? [1189.42] Koel: No. [1190.42] Stephen: Is it like going to an off-license inn in Streatham or Brixton where you walk up to a plexiglass [1196.66] Stephen: window and you have to point at things behind the plexiglass window and the guy behind the [1200.62] Stephen: counter squints like you might be trying to rob the place. [1203.06] Curry: I thought the strip mall was when you had the sort of square of shops all in sort of [1211.46] Curry: a square rather than like an indoor thing. [1214.62] Koel: Well put it this way. [1217.1] Koel: So you're on a main road, you turn into like this almost like a plaza I guess where it's [1221.5] Koel: like it's one solid building and then there's different doors along the way and you can [1226.5] Koel: go in and there's just different stores. [1229.3] Koel: Well Roar Geek says like you walk into this foyer, you turn to the left, it goes to one [1235.9] Koel: store, you turn to the right, there's another door and then it's basically just there's [1240.78] Koel: a door, you can step in like one step and then there's a little counter and you can [1245.7] Koel: say hey I need this, I need that, I need X, Y, Z and then they go oh yeah all right [1249.98] Koel: do it up on the computer and give it to you. [1252.3] Koel: So it's not quite as fancy as I guess maybe I mean it sounds like ooh you can go into [1256.74] Koel: a store but I think Roar Geek has actually been around for quite some time. [1262.54] Koel: Well Jack you ordered stuff from them ages and ages ago right? [1268.42] Jack: Yeah it was the original Cobra Motors but it was sort of the second or third batch and [1281.02] Jack: they were, thank you flight one and unfortunately there was a few in there that you just plugged [1288.94] Jack: in and they just smoked instantly so it was a bit of a nightmare. [1295.18] Jack: So I ended up sending back about two or three of them which is dumb really because the air [1302.26] Jack: miles on that is ridiculous and I could have harvested the bells and you know bearings [1310.02] Jack: or whatever but you know David didn't believe me obviously didn't know me from Adam but [1318.38] Jack: you know. [1319.38] Koel: Like who's this British guy ordering stuff from Canada and what's he sending back to [1322.9] Koel: me? [1323.9] Jack: It's just like you can see that they've had like no packs on them and you know like the [1330.22] Jack: prop nuts haven't even been used yet and you plug them in they just smoked and it weren't [1335.74] Jack: it weren't Roar Geek's fault it was just like Cobra like Cobra lied about the size of their [1342.18] Jack: stator you know they were you know they were writing it down as four and it was six and [1349.42] Jack: mil or something I can't remember and you know just the quality kind of dropped and [1356.86] Jack: you know it's right before the time of you know the red bottoms really and as soon as [1362.98] Jack: the red bottoms come out the power difference and their neodymium magnets you know they [1369.22] Jack: became the motor to get but they were aluminium and made out of cheese. [1375.46] Stephen: You really should have a drinking game every time Jack mentions red bottom motors. [1379.9] Jack: Yeah I know isn't it I don't even like them I've got a video shot of me killing them. [1386.38] Koel: I have four of them and I liked them until I crashed into steel and concrete. [1393.22] Jack: Yeah that's the only thing with them. [1395.22] Curry: I've still got some cobras that work fine. [1397.9] Jack: They're a bit rattly after a while they're really rattly. [1402.74] Stephen: Just gone zing seems alright. [1404.66] Stephen: Some zing and RC in power. [1406.26] Koel: A delivery is late Jack. [1409.22] Stephen: No boobies. [1410.22] Stephen: I do have some LDA RC ones where some of the motors have counterclockwise thread and some [1417.54] Stephen: have clockwise thread because someone thought that their motors were strong enough to actually [1424.1] Stephen: unscrew the prop. [1427.22] Stephen: Clearly an assumption that didn't hold out in the long run but I've got one quad where [1431.94] Stephen: I have to remember to unscrew the props in the opposite direction which always catches [1435.66] Stephen: me out. [1436.66] Curry: I dislike that just to have them all going the right way. [1444.04] Stephen: Unless your props are like 20 inches wide there's just no way that the moment of inertia [1448.56] Stephen: is enough that you could do anything to annoy luck nut. [1454.08] Curry: I mean you can if you don't screw them down properly but or you don't have a locking nut [1458.0] Stephen: but that's not the way to screw them down properly that's there's a whole different [1461.44] Stephen: thing. [1463.44] Koel: Well yeah at the start of the episode before I was here I saw you guys at Currie you guys [1467.28] Koel: were talking about your plane excursion and yeah that looked like a lot of fun but it [1473.8] Koel: was really crazy how how the wind really affected it at that one part of the field. [1481.0] Curry: Well that's the main part of that was was me flying low trying to catch it on camera [1485.28] Curry: if it was up in the air it'd have a lot more time to recover but because I wanted to sort [1489.8] Curry: of like do fly pass I was kept bringing it in low but yeah you get things like that you'll [1494.68] Curry: find especially flying planes lots of people will know this there's sort of areas that [1499.48] Curry: will produce certain the wind will go around there and like just flying over treetops always [1505.56] Curry: produces a lot of turbulence and stuff like that. [1508.24] Stephen: Because you had a hedge right there and the wind was hitting the hedge and then just bumping [1511.92] Stephen: straight up I guess. [1512.92] Curry: Yeah it was right in a corner something was going on there it was like it was rolling [1516.96] Curry: back or something it was really weird but you just just like don't fly low over there [1522.0] Curry: and you'll be all right yeah what are we looking at is it going to attack yourself on fire yeah [1528.8] Stephen: of course it looks like you've only if you connected all three phases there we go kill [1535.92] Jack: it with fire yes oh dear oh dear uh no it's the uh the tightest of it [1554.08] Stephen: I want to be searching yeah so that plane was like 70 grams wasn't it curry it's incredibly light [1562.0] Curry: yeah super light although I said I wasn't gonna mess around and do anything with FPV but a couple [1566.96] Curry: of guys have replied and said oh we're flying ours with an all-in-one camera and it's it's [1572.16] Curry: absolutely fine in fact they said it's a little bit someone said it was a little bit towel heavy [1576.48] Curry: which is why it's so hard to to fly out of stabilization so maybe just popping a little [1582.48] Curry: all-in-one just up here or something yeah well if you can fly for 20 minutes on the existing [1589.2] Stephen: battery you could go for a smaller battery probably and recoup some of the weight of the VTX [1594.8] Curry: yeah that's true but it I mean the VTX is like a couple of grams one of those little all-in-one [1602.64] Curry: jobbies and they're absolutely fine I just stuck them on everything [1607.92] Curry: I've I've stuck that one of those on a scaleactrix car on a remote control snake [1614.16] Stephen: um everything all in one VTX is the 25 milliwatt ones yeah um yeah you don't generally get them [1622.32] Curry: now but each you need a whole bunch of them where they're literally just like it's little [1626.72] Curry: literally a little camera with a VTX stuck to it because I remember when when a cow ate the camera [1631.68] Curry: I just managed to take the VTX off and use it for something else what is the exact same size as the [1635.76] Stephen: camera board and then it's got a little soldered on antenna at the top yeah it's just it and it's [1641.36] Curry: just literally like free solder connections yeah yeah on there yeah that just that'd be perfect [1648.32] Stephen: on that yeah of course you need to make sure there's a five volt line inside because there's [1654.21] Curry: only one s uh yeah those those cameras will go on on a single one s battery oh they go three to [1662.61] Curry: five volts generally speaking so they're absolutely fine you just take the line off the main battery [1667.41] Curry: and you'll be fine so I might do that I just say it's going to be so long before [1672.21] Curry: I mean Caroline Caroline told me that she has one and it flies fine up to about 10 miles an [1676.45] Curry: hour but even because I'm right on the coast and that feels very open it's very rare that [1682.37] Curry: the the wind's as light as 10 mile an hour but we'll keep trying and if it's not if it's [1686.37] Curry: windier it'd be fun just to see what happens I can float backwards I I did notice because I [1691.41] Stephen: saw your video in one direction we could really clearly see the plane like moving across the frame [1697.25] Stephen: and you turned and it just whipped right back in those times off good fun that's I mean that's [1704.05] Curry: why it'd been nice to have uh something bigger but it kind of it swings around about us isn't it [1709.41] Curry: because I think you could take that into a park and no one would get too offended depending on [1714.29] Curry: the park but as soon as you go bigger where it will fight the wind and I'm thinking something [1718.29] Curry: like the old zod dart which is one of my favorite planes which is still pretty small plane and would [1723.49] Curry: fly for like 20 25 minutes on um a 1300 3s but it's obviously bigger and louder and heavier yeah [1731.57] Curry: but it will you know it will cut with the wind so I think that the noise really speaks to people's [1736.29] Stephen: sense of danger stuff like this I can fly little micros around the park but if I start [1742.69] Stephen: like flying even just like an ultralight on 4s five inch people don't pay any attention but [1750.77] Stephen: you break out like the 1900 kv 6s and suddenly people like what the hell is that noise what's [1756.93] Curry: going on yeah yeah I find you only have to be sorry you only have to be like a certain distance [1763.01] Curry: up and they won't notice it but of course that's not the sort of flying you do on the quad because [1766.85] Curry: that's no fun you can't dodge around trees if you're above them can you sorry Jack I find um [1774.05] Jack: with like flying in wind it's more I find the greatest effect is more to do with the weight [1782.21] Jack: helps with penetration the heavier you are the I find the easier to get in [1789.89] Jack: you know to fight the wind I found and the other thing with but then you need a bigger motor to [1797.57] Jack: take away are we talking about in planes yeah in planes yeah oh yeah absolutely if you've got [1803.89] Curry: something quite heavy duty like those are those right wing planes they don't even seem to notice [1809.65] Curry: the wings and very aerodynamic like the the wings are pretty nice in the wind much better than like [1816.21] Curry: a more traditional plane with like a rudder and stuff where the ring wings will just cut through [1821.33] Stephen: really nicely and just wish along you mentioned you had some issues with that were you having to [1826.53] Stephen: really carefully coordinate the turns right because it it just leaves left otherwise and [1830.77] Curry: the motor wasn't strong enough to power up yeah so if if I was I was in the anchor bank [1836.77] Curry: modes I was just using the one stick and I would pull back on the elevator to try and get it to turn [1841.25] Curry: more sharply which it didn't seem to like it you got a bit squirrely and sort of oh it helped me [1846.77] Curry: I'm in a stall but you just feed in a bit of rudder and aileron and leave the elevator alone [1853.01] Curry: completely then it was it was absolutely fine which is actually the right way to fly I'm I'm [1858.05] Curry: I was in wing mode I was like oh yeah I've got this rudder thing which is interesting because [1862.13] Curry: often I fly a wing and I'm doing a turn and I'm like oh hang on the rudder doesn't do anything [1867.01] Stephen: does it that's no good I forget about it right so you're saying with wings fundamentally extra [1871.73] Stephen: power solves the control finesse issues you just power through it I mean yeah extra power [1878.13] Curry: solves a lot of things it it again it's it's a balance the old Bixler its original motor it [1885.17] Curry: came with was so efficient I could fly for like 30 minutes on a 2200 battery but if that got into [1892.69] Curry: trouble full throttling it could it could get stuck in this nasty sort of stall where it would do [1900.21] Curry: I just could not pull out of trouble then it would like I'm falling and with those big wings [1904.53] Curry: the wings would go down and it would wing stall and then you'd have to try and recover and stuff [1909.25] Curry: like that so that a bigger motors on that now but it will fly for half the time so it's like oh [1914.21] Curry: well that's that's not as good but it is better but yeah power power equals get out of trouble [1921.89] Curry: fast a bit like quads yeah on my old 3s it's like you go into a dive several seconds before [1929.01] Curry: you hit the floor you go full throttle and then it sort of slows down with like 4s 6s [1934.85] Curry: you're like oh I'm an inch from the ground I should throttle up and you can still get away [1938.13] Stephen: with it pretty much yeah success you can just kind of be like right I'm gonna clip the ground [1944.21] Stephen: take a little bit of grass and just rock it out of there and the full throttle is like [1949.17] Stephen: I found with a lot of quads I don't fly with gopros and it's kind of amusing to get up to [1953.97] Stephen: full throttle I should probably like motor limit them but I just keep that full throttle for [1958.93] Stephen: moments of sheer joy when you're just like right let's be stupid let's just whack it on full [1964.21] Stephen: throttle and I know if I'm like down at ground level and I do just an instant like flick up the [1970.53] Stephen: stick like that then I'm going to pull like 100 amps at my lipo my voltage is going to drain but [1975.89] Stephen: by the time I realize that I'm 99.9 meters up in the air I'm looking down at the beautiful scenery [1984.21] Frank: this episode was recorded in front of a live online audience downloaded and edited to make [1988.77] Frank: sense when it played audio only sensors to please the iTunes people hosted on the internet [1993.89] Frank: forwarded through to your podcast provider downloaded playing on your device and is now [1998.13] Frank: playing in your ears all thanks to our patreons consider joining them and you'll also get other [2003.65] Frank: online benefits find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out one thing I will [2011.41] Jack: say about pushers is um on my uh ar wing I've done the whole thing where I moved I've done like [2022.21] Jack: standoffs of the motor to move the prop even further away from the back of the wing so you [2028.77] Jack: don't waste a load of energy with like the noise and um you know like efficiency you know better [2038.21] Jack: efficiency but the trouble is with doing that is you have to put more weight up on in the nose [2045.33] Curry: yeah I mean wings are loud for that reason unfortunately but do yeah I find the further [2050.85] Curry: out you move the prop the less wing like it looks it just kind of looks like a backwards plane [2055.97] Curry: at the point where it's like wind and then some time and then here's a prop over here [2061.41] Stephen: does that tend to unbalance the prop if you put it by way out don't tie it to the body does it [2069.25] Jack: encourage vibration and stuff like that I don't know I don't think so it kind of depends what [2075.33] Curry: your quads made of normally in a wing you'd have like the body would be shaped and there'd be a [2081.41] Curry: motor mount you're only talking about these things where the more modern wing you've got [2085.01] Stephen: a central column where you might be extending off the motor are you moving the entire motor back [2090.77] Stephen: or you're doing like a proper extension off the motor all right okay no yes like so there's [2097.01] Jack: the the uh the firewall which is what you screw the motor to and then they're standoffs and then [2105.81] Jack: the motor then sits on that okay the only real downside is obviously the weight thing you have [2112.53] Jack: to put more weight at the front because you've got a bit of leverage there and you could snap your [2120.13] Jack: your motor off more easily because obviously it's stood out and you know more leverage easier to [2127.57] Jack: snap off cold you want to read this one out like comment subscribe thumbs up thumbs up guys yeah [2139.57] Jack: that's really enthusiastic [2141.17] Jack: uh curry uh any news on whether you're going to get a replacement back for your uh radio master [2151.65] Curry: box yes according to radio master they're sending me one although i think they have got [2161.25] Curry: the the the right backs for the actual release so i think everybody that had [2167.41] Curry: a boxer preemie said pre-production bottom [2172.21] Curry: well essentially i don't think they were in mass production by the time i told them and they said [2177.25] Curry: they actually went out and bought a ghost ghost module special to see if they could fit it in [2182.05] Curry: and uh and change their design so i think hopefully everyone that's actually ordered [2186.45] Curry: one as a customer has got a proper one if not talked to radio master and say my module stuck in [2193.57] Stephen: the back of my box the answers are the people and and they uh a couple of racers who are using [2200.93] Stephen: ghosts they were surprised to hear of this so it sounds like that the real release versions didn't [2206.45] Curry: have that flaw yeah i think so which is kind of why it's like it's it's pointless to me to talk [2211.49] Curry: about it and say hey they've they've repaired this and they would be yes well mine's fine [2216.05] Stephen: it's just kind of weird how because they'd made a ton of radios before that it's weird how they [2222.05] Stephen: chose a different dimension for the new radio when they've made like thousands of t [2228.77] Curry: it's really curious this is this is not their first radio and it's not their first time with [2233.97] Curry: the full-size jr star module um something just must have got missed somewhere they didn't [2238.69] Curry: particularly test it out and i think one of the problems is their latest [2243.01] Curry: their ranger module didn't seem to suffer from the problems that the problem is not the fact that [2248.53] Curry: it's a bit tight yeah especially with ghosts it's like [2252.13] Curry: okay knock it in there that the problem is to get it out there's no flex in in the back [2258.37] Curry: because it's so tight so to get it out if you unscrew the back and the backs away from from [2263.57] Curry: the main body there's more flex in the plastic and you can get the module out easy so i guess [2268.69] Curry: they've just they've either made it bigger or they've made the walls thinner or something so [2272.77] Stephen: there's a bit more giving it it's really it's just one of these things where people have been [2276.45] Stephen: making jr bait modules for ages but there's no published spec and everyone just goes by some [2283.97] Stephen: rough agreed-upon measurement that isn't accurate enough it seems that way just given that [2290.29] Curry: i noticed certain modules are slightly tighter than others and other times it's quite hard to [2296.53] Curry: get modules to line up on the pins quite nicely i've had it before especially with crossfire [2301.73] Curry: that you can you can miss the pins and they'll go up and trace so yeah [2306.45] Curry: dismantle a tracing module once because they've just got wedged with the pins stuck on a funny [2311.49] Curry: the r9 module has some of the best design for getting the pins lined up because they've got [2315.81] Curry: these nice round holes and it's sort of like with the pins like nicely yeah so it goes in nice but [2321.81] Curry: yeah i don't know it's it's all vagueness isn't it i'm sure there's not like a release spec where [2326.69] Curry: where jr says this is this is the thing for our modules it's just each [2331.01] Curry: each manufacturer kind of vaguely copies the other one and it's i don't know how radio master [2337.81] Curry: didn't test this properly i guess they didn't test it on enough range of [2341.73] Curry: modules not to see it but hey they fixed it and i don't think any property is affected [2347.01] Stephen: there was an interesting surface transmitter that was released by radio length the rc8x i think [2353.49] Stephen: which claimed it did crossfire on a surface transmitter but then i looked at the video of how [2359.17] Stephen: they wanted people to wire it up and they're like yes so you just use the trainer port what you do [2364.85] Stephen: is you get a trainer cable and then you cut the end off and then you solder two pins onto the [2370.85] Stephen: trainer cable and then you shove the two pins up into the module for your s port whatever s bus [2378.29] Stephen: and ground and then that's fine and like this is just there's so many ways this could go wrong so [2384.13] Stephen: you need to power the module externally and you've got to make sure the ground is tied to the radio [2388.37] Stephen: ground or you're in a world of pain and then you've got to connect you've got to hack up like a [2393.73] Stephen: headphone cable and solder to these tiny wires inside the headphone cable and then manually [2399.89] Stephen: insert two pins this is what their video they didn't even have like you know how sometimes you [2404.77] Jack: just have the pins on their little board in a row like can you find this video and play it to us [2416.21] Curry: it's kind of like how old school four three three worked which was always [2420.69] Curry: trainer cable and it's just the ppm signal going into the the old thing but that's because [2427.09] Curry: it didn't have a special protocol and that's the way things work then but that you know [2431.81] Curry: it's 10 years ago this is more up to date now i do kind of miss flying um [2439.73] Jack: crossfire but then equally i don't okay because because i've got so many [2446.21] Curry: models around and i haven't got enough money to buy lots of receivers every time like the [2450.13] Curry: flavor of the month changes it's like well that's on crossfire so let's get crossfire that's on [2454.69] Curry: elrs and that's so let's fly that the only thing i won't fly anymore is r9 because i was like [2460.37] Curry: it was it was always bad even when it was was going so it's just like they would just get converted [2466.69] Jack: over to the lrs it's much better i still work quite happily yeah how uh how's the uh [2478.37] Jack: open hd stuff is that what you were working on with the soldering of the raspberry pi [2484.61] Curry: yes uh for people that aren't privy to our our group chat we had i i was having a problem with [2491.41] Curry: a pie and i asked the guys to sanity check it and stephen very nicely spotted um i'd managed to [2500.29] Curry: what you have to do you have to um solder things on to usb instead of using usb socket [2506.13] Curry: so i'd soldered on and just a bit of the solder was just clipping something else and that was [2512.13] Curry: causing the usb to fail completely oh my god this looks horrendous this looks like a war crime [2518.53] Stephen: like what what will possibly go wrong so for already of yours we've got someone who's got [2524.13] Stephen: a surface transmitter with one of those little headphone socket trainer connections [2529.73] Curry: can you explain what a surface transmitter is sorry like a car one with a little plastic wheel [2534.21] Stephen: on the side in a trigger pistol grip pistol grip and it's got some relatively fancy color display [2540.29] Stephen: that looks a little bit basic but we can see protocol output mode is set to crsf which in the [2546.05] Stephen: face of it looks great but then the means of connecting crsf as recommended by the manufacturer [2552.37] Stephen: this is from radio link this is the manufacturer's video they they say get a headphone cable and solder [2558.93] Stephen: two jumpers to it and then just kind of poke the jumpers into the module just just kind of hope [2566.05] Stephen: that you get it right and just just jam them in there and this is this is probably how you want [2570.61] Stephen: to do it um and the module has to be powered by an external xt30 while you're doing this and it's [2578.53] Stephen: just like let's just hope that nothing goes horribly wrong because we've got a battery powering the [2583.17] Stephen: module we've got a battery powering the radio the grounds aren't tied together until you actually [2588.69] Stephen: link them like this it's all just you could really quite easily end up with magic smoke [2596.85] Stephen: coming out of your crossfire module i think it's it it's not i don't think i'd recommend this [2604.53] Stephen: approach for someone i'd probably say you know put this in a bit of breadboard or one of those [2608.53] Stephen: little plastic pin holders and then label which is up and which is down and be very careful about [2614.61] Stephen: plugging it in and then once you've tied this gestalt nightmare of frankenstein's monster [2622.37] Stephen: together you've got a headphone cable stuck out the side of your pistol grip transmitter you've [2626.93] Stephen: got a crossfire module hanging off the headphone cable which is also hanging off a lipo that [2631.97] Stephen: powers the crossfire module and you've got to somehow drive a car while holding this kind of [2638.93] Stephen: electronic net of chaos yeah that looks uh it's just yeah i mean to be fair there aren't any [2660.37] Curry: it would seem particularly long-range car transmitters but if you really want to do that [2666.37] Stephen: you know get a regular transmitter that's the hilarious thing like this is a 300 [2672.53] Stephen: currency unit top of the range transmitter and this is the solution this is their premium solution [2679.25] Stephen: right most can't even talk crossfire this one can and the way they've decided to recommend doing [2684.29] Stephen: it is just to kind of pilfer an old headphone cable solder jumpers on it and sort of poke a [2689.89] Stephen: crossfire module which i guess you're supposed to hold under your armpit or something while you [2695.49] Stephen: use the radio it's somewhat chaotic i mean something crazy but build it build their radio [2702.53] Curry: with a module bay if if they're going to support external modules exactly gary i mean they put it [2707.73] Stephen: in the firmware maybe they hacked it in late but the really obvious go-to would be to have one of [2712.37] Stephen: those little nano adapters just on the opposite side to where the wheel is and you just slide the [2719.09] Stephen: thing in and never think about it ever again because it's not going to fall off or catch fire [2724.53] Stephen: or tangle you up when you try and drive the car [2730.05] Stephen: but just yeah that one caught my attention just a real weird one [2734.05] Stephen: not sure quite what was going on i like the fact that it does include zrsf support so hey you [2738.69] Stephen: could use your elrs kit there as well for it for a cheap solution but please just give us a bay [2745.25] Stephen: you know give us an external bay and don't make people go through this chaos with the the trainer [2750.53] Stephen: because there's such that there's way better ways of doing it in fact ready your master if you're [2755.57] Stephen: listening please just just make an edgtx pistol grip transmitter move that that whole scene out [2762.77] Stephen: of the 1980s and into modern times with an edgtx pistol grip transmitter that gives people all the [2770.05] Stephen: power of edgtx for car users that would be fantastic will they be able to understand the [2776.85] Jack: whole programming edged you know edgtx malarkey that's the problem you can ship with a default [2785.01] Stephen: model can't you i mean there's only like two channels to worry about so it's fair assumption [2790.05] Stephen: you've got a steering and throttle and if it doesn't work you swap the channels the other way [2794.61] Curry: around right you could have extra buttons to make extra exciting things especially if you're doing [2799.81] Curry: the old super scale i'm driving around pretending to drive a truck and i need 10 channels to do my [2806.13] Curry: lights and my engines and my my indicators anyone wanting to do head tracking would have a much easier [2811.65] Jack: type lurky we want your opinion would they would they adopt this or would they reject it they like [2822.29] Jack: i drive car edgtx too too too tough hurty brain just have a wizard that says twist your wheel [2833.49] Curry: okay i've got that one now you should trigger okay we found the two channels you're on you're [2839.17] Stephen: good yeah simple as that right yeah you i mean it's it's hard to map channels where you've got [2846.29] Stephen: like something that might fly off and go crazy but the car where one of those channels is just [2850.69] Stephen: going to wiggle the wheels in a really obvious fashion and not damage anything and the other one [2855.97] Stephen: you could just you know keep to a very very small amount you could easily just be like [2860.93] Curry: are the wheels waggling or not oh dear i did not see that car does kind of make a mix as lurky [2870.58] Stephen: yeah i mean there is that whole barrier because a lot of them just buy the receivers with the [2875.78] Stephen: transmitter and they don't do anything more than like bridge two pins that's the beginning and end [2880.34] Curry: of it i don't understand why more car drivers don't do more with this sort of stuff and fpv [2887.22] Curry: when i was watching a while ago and um caroline mentions kevin tellbit there i saw the the the [2894.58] Curry: speed championships at this um airstrip somewhere in north england and they they can get these cars [2901.3] Curry: up to like you know 170 miles an hour it's really fast and what they have to do they have to drive [2906.02] Curry: it as far as they can see they have to ponce about with some fataba pistol grip thing to try and get [2912.5] Curry: better range and then they have to drive it towards themselves very carefully and go [2918.1] Curry: i hope they can direct it through the two speed things if you just had fpv you're just like okay [2924.34] Curry: no problem and you had a decent radio where you didn't need to so easy it's about trying to mod [2928.58] Stephen: fataba things you'd be uh can't go even further you could have like a little radar where the [2933.86] Stephen: gate is and just have a hud that shows you where the gate is oh yes it's left a bit right a bit [2938.98] Stephen: right perfectly lined up on dead center and just gun it and off you go yeah it'd be wonderful [2946.96] Stephen: we should build a speed car but they're so expensive to to build yeah you end up with [2951.6] Stephen: like 12s 14s components and they're just ludicrously costly it's a massive gulf between 2s and 3s stuff [2958.8] Koel: and the other stuff sorry drag race like drag racing kind of cars you're talking about yeah [2966.16] Curry: yeah these it was it was purely um a speed thing so they they go one at a time [2971.68] Curry: and they just basically hit through the sensing gates that says how fast they're going and there's [2976.88] Curry: there's records held and i think i think the records are like 200 and just over 200 miles an [2981.68] Curry: hour or something in one of these cars and of course if they wipe out it's pretty spectacular [2986.8] Curry: because you can imagine the number of rolls and spins one of these things gets when it goes [2991.28] Stephen: and they're doing it with like 12s worth of 5 amp power lipos so those things fly out like [2997.44] Curry: huge amounts of lipos in series and in parallels and multiple motors and esc's like this big [3007.2] Curry: 200 amps and stuff um but yeah it's uh it's it's impressive but it's very expensive builds very [3013.84] Jack: expensive builds yeah curry what's with the facial hair how comes you've got a bit of a beard going [3022.64] Curry: it's quite a lot of beard actually but it's it's it's see through because it's gray [3028.0] Curry: it looks kind of not like a big wisdom i like it i i feel it has to uh you have to be in there [3034.0] Koel: for the long run and uh and grow like a big massive one i'm going elder statesman at the moment [3039.68] Curry: before i tell you on christmas no i recommend i'll complete with you there there's no chance [3047.44] Stephen: i've just got lazy programmer beard it's so close to being a neck beard this is like the most I can [3054.08] Koel: grow it just looks like it just grows long afterwards and not thick no this is a particular [3062.48] Curry: thick well it doesn't look thick because it's all different colors gray and slightly less gray [3069.68] Curry: but yeah i found a way of of having my um CPAP machine where it will actually adhere to the beard [3077.44] Koel: and doesn't just leak so yeah one of those do you know sleep apnea or yeah oh yeah because i [3087.28] Koel: i am i wonder if i uh we're certain random topic but i i wondered if i have that because i tend to [3093.52] Curry: snore pretty bad sometimes well there's snoring sleep apnea is when you sort of you stop snoring [3101.44] Curry: and breathing and then suddenly you're when your brain says oh you're dying wake up it's [3107.84] Curry: pretty easy to test you just get a hospital go to sleep clinic and they'll feel new curves [3113.12] Curry: and uh measure your blood oxygen and how many times you wake up and stuff like that yeah but [3119.76] Curry: your your partner will know if if you've got it because it's suddenly like you you were snoring [3124.96] Curry: and i wanted to kill you and then he went quiet and i thought thank god he's dead and then suddenly [3128.56] Koel: he went and started snoring and gasping the breath kind of thing right yeah that's it yeah i guess [3136.32] Koel: maybe not the not the topic for ldo but i was just curious how how that is when you're sleeping is it [3142.0] Curry: uncomfortable or what the bed or the mask the mask thing yes um yeah it takes a while to get [3151.84] Curry: when i first started i had this sort of triangular one and that just gave me like a blister one day [3156.88] Curry: and but i've gone through i've had four different ones now and then it's fairly comfy it's just a [3163.36] Curry: bit it's a bit different on this because it sort of pokes a bit and stuff but it's all right [3167.28] Curry: thanks for shaving which is nice i was checking with pippa because i got back from holiday [3174.96] Curry: and i sort of shaved it too i got beard trimmer so i shaved it like five mil and i was like what do [3179.44] Curry: you think and she says it's okay keep it growing i said do you want me to tidy up these bits are [3183.28] Curry: underneath and she's like no i think she's attracted to tramps so i'm going trampoline [3189.28] Stephen: this is project air work it so on a more rc related note there was a blokey um yeah calling [3197.28] Stephen: project air who put a rocket or a couple of different rocket boosters onto a foamy [3203.92] Stephen: and um he was well pleased with the results because he thought that foam planes can go [3208.16] Stephen: no faster than 140 miles an hour and uh we know from one of our previous guests the excellent [3215.2] Stephen: oh my googly bird uh that they certainly can because he hit 300 mile an hour on props [3224.53] Curry: yeah um rupert's good friend of the show very good vote and the ultimate spin demon he's been [3232.61] Curry: doing this a long time um and basically it creates so much torque launching one of these [3241.01] Curry: because they fly a very very small prop with very powerful motors that spins at almost hypersonic [3247.73] Curry: speeds so if you've seen him hand launch this the first thing he does is spin round like 20 times [3254.05] Curry: he's a very good pilot and can handle that for me i'd just be like oh my god it's it's dying [3259.25] Curry: so this is his world record one which he gets a drone to drop and you see when he starts to [3265.33] Curry: matter the first thing it does is still torque rolls but i mean at this point he's already beaten [3272.45] Curry: project air by by some way and i know roots was he used a tracker for a while because [3280.21] Curry: when you're going this fast your 10 fields over before you've you've turned around [3285.73] Stephen: his air speed he's hit 400 there 400 he's keeping keeping it open and there we are [3292.77] Stephen: it hits 500 kilometers now 109 i think he was talking miles an hour with this [3300.85] Stephen: so that's uh like 200 kilometers an hour but yeah that's still like two and a half times as [3307.65] Curry: fast as yeah i did comment on on project air's video that you should go back and look at that [3313.73] Curry: because before you go rockets you've got to you've got to look at what you can do and part of that [3319.73] Curry: is getting the right battery the right sort of prop because as soon as you're getting ultra ultra [3325.17] Curry: power uh you'd think like oh you want a big prop but the prop comes way down because you have to [3332.05] Curry: spin the prop so fast to catch some air uh that it's kind of crazy but funnily enough [3342.69] Koel: it must be in kilometers an hour because um if it was miles an hour then that would be like 800 [3349.01] Stephen: kilometers an hour what what we're talking about we should do the the one we showed was 300 miles [3355.33] Stephen: an hour or 500 yeah yeah 509 kilometers per hour or 316 miles per hour here he goes yeah he's super [3363.33] Stephen: like metric he opens it up and he hits like 140 mile an hour but the rocket engine actually burns [3370.77] Curry: out rather quickly and it seems to eject themselves they have a very quick burn time and they just [3377.01] Curry: do that really fast acceleration don't they it really needs more than one things [3383.49] Curry: i i mentioned the the speed record things and project air was actually there running um a rocket [3389.49] Curry: turbine car which he crashed which was quite amazing oh my word that's not even it was an [3394.93] Stephen: hour 140 kilometers an hour versus who's doing 500 so yeah back to the future yeah yeah he's got [3405.57] Curry: just perfect to get his flux capacitor going but bad for anything else we could do so much [3411.73] Curry: but so roots has run the that speed stuff with with jet turbines as well which is slightly crazy [3419.49] Stephen: to watch he got only a couple of mile an hour slower i think he just beat it with the carbon [3424.37] Stephen: fiber custom prop that he had and he was like two or three mile an hour slower with a jet [3429.09] Curry: i think he said yeah the jet the jet wasn't amazing they're very expensive and [3434.37] Curry: going to nasty crashes i remember a couple of years ago he bought this [3437.89] Curry: amazing it's just a thing of beauty this pure carbon fiber thing for speed i was like that's [3443.73] Curry: amazing when you get a flyer and he's like i don't know if i am because it's very expensive [3448.37] Curry: and it's so pretty and i didn't want to ruin it it might just hang above my fireplace for a while [3452.93] Curry: so who knows i haven't seen him for a while as i was saying to steven he's had a child [3458.69] Curry: in the last couple of years so he's probably a bit busy there so i wonder if anyone knows project [3464.61] Stephen: we could kind of chat fast planes if if they do that'd be interesting he's done a lot of stuff [3470.37] Jack: isn't he still quite a few but yeah let's send off an email see whether we can get them on um [3478.53] Jack: should we call it there anyone else will fare if i hold your piece well i was gonna show uh one [3484.61] Koel: quick thing um i think i showed this to you the other day jack um and i just wanted to see what [3490.69] Koel: your guys thoughts were on it because i'm still relatively you know i'm still relatively new [3495.01] Koel: a couple years in are less than a couple years in now but uh let me present [3501.89] Koel: i saw this on one of the local groups and what do you think of that guys [3509.09] Koel: what is this and what is happening here i need some explanations [3515.49] Stephen: someone has decided the receiver is more important than a battery [3518.53] Curry: well this is what happens when you you get your first radio and you you get your fly sky [3522.93] Curry: receiver with it and you're like okay well i guess i plug the server cable to each of the [3529.73] Curry: the bits in the no they're using ibus are they using ibus well that's a start [3535.65] Curry: but you can buy a smaller receiver i mean back back in the day i think that's all you had yeah [3542.85] Curry: my tricopter uses one of those great big turner g um eight channel things and you just [3548.77] Curry: like everything's plugged in but there is one very early i'll start with this and move up [3554.69] Stephen: i know for a fact because i tried to help someone upgrade there's one very early version of this um [3560.93] Stephen: fly sky receiver where ibus isn't supported and you had to do like ppm so there's one like cursed [3569.25] Stephen: model and if you get the absolute cheapest radio that's available it can't even handle ibus [3574.29] Jack: receivers and you end up with just monster yeah so that was a quad with a fly sky fsi 6 receiver [3586.21] Jack: the old school one with pwm for any audio listeners and so yeah i just thought it was [3592.93] Koel: interesting because my receiver is like you know the size of a half the size of a pen yeah [3599.97] Curry: i suppose you have to think cola traditionally these have been plain receivers so if you had a [3604.85] Curry: plane with a bunch of servos and you'd be like oh this is great i've got a couple of channels free [3609.33] Curry: and i'm from no worries it only gets ridiculous when you put them on little quads and then it [3614.53] Curry: doesn't it's like this is weird this is not going to work yeah i wonder where their antennas are [3619.89] Stephen: the original people when that came out were flying like 450 mil stuff like giant barbecue [3627.41] Koel: size quads yeah it wasn't it wasn't a problem yeah i just thought it was interesting and uh [3635.17] Koel: yeah it just uh it seems like it's a bit of a is that do you guys know what kind of frame that [3640.21] Koel: is or i don't mean to sort of take too long on this but i was just curious can't tell from here [3645.41] Jack: a6b is that not a is it not a source one or something [3654.45] Stephen: what's the jigsaw off that's my question it doesn't look terrible the camera is mounted [3660.21] Stephen: very far back which hints at someone either really liking how the knurled standoffs look [3665.09] Curry: or perhaps i like to fly what it looks like i'm fainting and the sides are closing in very slowly [3671.57] Koel: it's like they're they want enhanced four by three aspect ratio it feels like a canyon racing [3677.81] Jack: in an open field thank you that is all we've got time for uh this show you've been listening to [3684.85] Jack: let's drone out and thank you to all our patreons uh who are scrolling down the bottom there [3692.61] Jack: you've been joined by the man with the mustache steven cheers everyone so you're a curry kitten [3697.97] Jack: bye bye my personal friend cole see ya and i'll be bright until i fly thank you good night [3708.45] UNKNOWN: bye telemetry lost
