[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to… [14.4] Jack: Carlos Campos! [16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner! [17.84] Frank: Sam Dahmer. [19.68] Frank: On with the show. [20.68] Koel: Let's Drone Out now. [52.08] Jack: Hello, and you're listening to Let's Drone Out. [56.64] Jack: Tonight we have a special guest with us, Superfly, we're hopefully covering the history [65.16] Jack: of FBV, followed by some frames, maybe touching on a bit of tuning, hearing the other side. [74.56] Jack: We are joined by our lovely man with the moustache, Steven. [80.44] Jack: Hello, good evening everyone. [82.52] Jack: Yeah, I'm sorry for denying your special guest at your birthday, this show will be [87.6] Jack: all yours, you can tell me to shut up if you want at any time, I feel obliged. [98.72] Jack: It was lovely catching up with you on Wednesday by the way. [104.24] Jack: Everyone's favourite curry kitten. [106.48] Jack: Hello. [108.52] Jack: My buddy, Carl. [110.76] Jack: Howdy. [112.0] Jack: If you're a tall building, you'd better look out. [114.52] Jack: And I've been bright until I fly. [117.28] Jack: And we are joined, of course, by Superfly. [119.72] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Hello, yes, also known as Steven Wright or Steve. [124.2] Jack: Yeah, it's going to be a bit confusing because we've already got a Steve. [129.4] Stephen: You can call me Steven and him Steve if that works, which it does pose. [134.48] Stephen: We've only got a Steven, I don't think I've ever called him Steve before. [137.16] Stephen: I think we've reached like critical mass of Steves in Betaflight at one bite. [141.12] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It was, but there's like five hundred. [144.48] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: We got three British Steves in the Superfly development group, which is quite unusual. [149.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's not that massively common name, but and also Steven's name, I spell my name like [154.68] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: that as well. [155.68] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So, but yeah, most people, friends call me Steve and that's how I kind of, that's how [160.4] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I roll. [161.4] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Superfly, that's the business though, it's not really my pilot name, I don't have one [169.48] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: because I'm more interested in the other stuff, really. [174.56] Koel: One can be Steven, one can be Stefan. [178.04] Stephen: I'm routinely Stefan whenever working with people from like Eastern Europe or India or [183.44] Stephen: anywhere that's not the UK. [184.76] Stephen: It's always Stefan, Stefan Ben, this awkward pause at the end like that, not sure what [190.08] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: to do with it. [192.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's a common problem for Stevens. [195.76] Stephen: So tell us how you found out about FPV. [198.64] Stephen: What starts at the start? [201.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Right, well, yeah, I mean, the kind of weird thing is that I feel like in terms of coming [207.59] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: across people that I'm sort of becoming like one of the old people within this sphere, [214.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: which is a sort of worry a little bit, but I started, you know, there are a lot of people [221.71] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: before me, but I started around 2014, 2015, and I paid for someone to build a ZMR 250 [229.67] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: for me. [230.79] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So no, I mean, I don't know what you think, Steven, but it seems to me that the whole [235.71] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: mini quad thing took off, no pun intended, with the blackout 300. [243.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I think it was 300. [244.67] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. [245.67] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And that was what people call the mini quad. [250.79] Stephen: I just said drop the mini quad, because everything else is just gigantic before then. [256.39] Stephen: I looked at those designs, and I'm a bit blind to it, like Jack and Curry, they were flying [262.15] Stephen: tricopters and much earlier stuff, I looked at the designs which had kind of car or plane [267.71] Stephen: motors with like bullet connectors for the motors. [271.07] Stephen: And where I was living at the time, I just went, No, I can't do that at all. [274.51] Stephen: This is terrible. [275.51] Stephen: So I went off into the weeds and like flew cheap hub sand kit and other kind of budget [281.47] Stephen: brushed solutions for a couple of years until things got down to the point where I could [285.63] Stephen: build like a three inch quad and then I started getting into it. [289.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. [290.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Well, I mean, it's quite easy to, well, a lot of people haven't seen, you know, just [294.71] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: how difficult it was when we started. [296.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And that was one of the reasons why I decided to have a crack at it myself, was because [300.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: it just seemed so insane. [301.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Like when I first built a ZMR, there was no camera map and the cameras were so different [307.43] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: to each other. [308.43] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: One of them had a board on the back, and was just completely exposed PCB with the site, [312.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: the pre HHS one, one, seven, whatever, only 600 cans, I can't really find that. [321.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But some of that, but they didn't even have pace to start with. [323.99] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So people were literally like Oscar Liang, like he was, he was there quite early on as [328.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: well, obviously. [329.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And he was just hot gluing them in and stuff like that. [331.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, it was so primitive and difficult really to get going. [339.79] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And all the flat. [340.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Exactly. [342.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Difficult. [343.75] Curry: Does this bring back any memories? [345.59] Curry: Look at that camera angle. [346.59] Curry: No tilt. [347.59] Curry: No tilt. [348.59] Curry: But yeah, this is the, so I forgot what the sensor was, but this was this was a massive [354.31] Curry: upgrade because this is a Sony CCD sensor. [356.47] Curry: And before that, the CMOS sensors back in the day were awful. [361.19] Curry: You got super yellow. [362.27] Curry: So when the CCD cameras came out, these board cameras, which were old security cameras, [367.15] Curry: that was that was seen as a major step upwards. [369.31] Curry: This is my ZM-R250, complete with four miles of cable. [374.51] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [375.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And the antenna and the sort of, you know, the way the antenna is mounted, you'd like, [383.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you build one, you get really excited, you take it out, you have one crash, it was broken. [388.91] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it was it was really quite painful to start off with, like, yeah, and not they weren't [396.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: very powerful either. [398.19] Stephen: That's why you didn't need camera tilt because you just build it, go out, fly it, take off [403.19] Stephen: and crash before you ever got to fly forward. [405.99] Curry: Yeah. [406.99] Curry: Yeah. [407.99] Curry: This thing flew on a 3S and the good old gen found 50, 30 drops, which flex like that. [415.39] Curry: And if you go into a dive, you have to think about three seconds before, oh, I need to [420.31] Curry: pull up. [421.31] Curry: And then you go full throttle and then it slowly comes around like that. [424.43] Curry: You had to think some some time ahead when you were flying these, but they were still [430.99] Curry: a major upgrade over what had come before. [433.35] Curry: And there was there was something in the middle. [434.95] Curry: I remember the blackout as well, because like the ZM-R was a clone of it. [438.55] Curry: But somebody bought out something. [441.19] Curry: And I'm trying to think of it. [442.19] Curry: And I can't remember. [443.19] Curry: It was RC groups. [444.19] Curry: And it's kind of like you could take the motors from the the smaller DJI, the 330 and put [450.67] Curry: it on this. [451.67] Curry: And it was kind of an intermediate, much more acrobatic frame. [456.71] Curry: And I can't remember. [457.71] Curry: And that was before it went proper minicord with the blackout. [460.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I wonder what that was. [462.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I can't remember what that was. [463.87] Curry: I see if I can find it. [464.87] Curry: I remember it. [465.87] Curry: It was it was. [466.87] Stephen: Is it a dead cat kit or something? [469.23] Stephen: Meanwhile, while while Curry tries to find dead RC groups spreads from the turn of the [473.99] Stephen: century. [474.99] Stephen: Let's let's carry on. [476.99] Stephen: So where were we? [480.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, I think, you know, when we discussed this, I was thinking, you know, the interesting [487.67] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: things is what's what were the frames that. [492.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, it's a bit of a hackney phrase, but what were the game changing frames? [495.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: What are the frames that that actually had a significant impact on the hobby? [501.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I would say, I mean, the blackout was the first miniquod frame. [505.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And that's that's when the kind of the whole term miniquod came. [509.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And you had people like Boris B. [511.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Flying them and Metal Danny, you know, cool guys like that. [517.95] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And then but then, you know, it was clones and then there was the alien, you know. [522.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I think the alien by impulse, I'll say, yeah. [529.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So that I mean, when when Final Glide was turned up at that, the first race meet and [535.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: one with the alien and everyone's like, what's that frame? [539.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: What's that frame? [540.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And yeah, I would say that the majority. [547.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Of the frames where we are now have been influenced by the alien. [552.11] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And, you know, I think Impulse RC deserve a lot of credit for that. [556.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, obviously, I'm a free starter, so I I view that as a kind of seminal frame. [562.67] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But it was Walcott who made that, though, really. [567.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, yeah. I mean, he wasn't the designer, but I thought it was a guy called Soma who designed it. [574.03] Jack: Yeah, that was Walcott, wasn't it? [577.35] Jack: Right. I think I can't remember. [581.39] Jack: I'd have to because that that was the initial. [585.11] Jack: Yeah, initial. Nice one. [589.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, because prior to that, [592.11] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, the the arm configuration on the ZMR 250 was absurd. [596.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, you use four screws for each arm and they didn't they didn't connect. [603.15] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It was kind of it was almost like an H configuration. [608.07] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And yeah, and the alien, you know, was the first to come out, which had, you know, so it was an X. [615.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's completely butted up, you know, and now now most. [619.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Well, now that now they're coming up with slightly slightly alternatives. [625.23] Jack: But yeah, we've got we've got to say that. [632.42] Jack: Chad know it was like banging the drum for alien before still won that race [641.02] Jack: because they were doing the whole like six and seven inch was like the that angle tilting. [648.18] Jack: So I thought Chad won it, though. That's why I said. [651.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I thought it was a mistake. [659.88] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, yeah. I mean, he was because it's an Australian. Was it Australian? [664.28] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: They based in Australia, but I thought, yeah, I think a guy called Sean, I think. [669.36] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I don't know him very well. Yeah, Sean Blakemore. [673.2] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And he's Australian. I don't know. Yeah. [677.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. What else? [685.44] Stephen: Well, the arms, right. So everything was six inch. [687.96] Stephen: Then people started with six inch. [689.6] Stephen: It was just easier to drive with less powerful motors. [692.56] Stephen: You could, you know, get a decent amount of flight time, albeit you couldn't really do aggressive moves. [697.8] Stephen: And that seemed to go pretty quickly. [700.92] Stephen: That was one of the first things to change along with motors, getting more powerful. [704.56] Stephen: People decided to go for power instead of efficiency. [707.56] Stephen: And everything's been five inch since then. [709.96] Stephen: I notice on your site, you've got five, five and a half and six inch options. [714.08] Stephen: And you've got deadcat options at five and five and a half. [717.28] Stephen: You cover everything. So do you still see pilots flying six inch? [721.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Well, yeah, to be totally honest with you, I mean, it's mostly people. [726.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's just kind of overwhelmingly five inch. [730.0] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I was last year just kind of basically only only sticking to five at that point, because, yeah, I mean, it was it was pretty rare. [742.28] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, it's pretty rare people would go six inch and seven inch. [744.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: We're talking about maybe five percent. [748.44] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But, yeah, the five point five inch thing, I think, because the hero cameras have become heavy. [755.76] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. And Chris Ross made a video talking about, you know, five point five being good for the hero cameras, [764.4] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: which kind of popularized it a bit more, I think. [767.52] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And yeah, and some people started asking about it. [771.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And yeah, I just kind of trying to I put a poll up and try and kind of make decisions through polls, [778.76] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: because otherwise you just kind of think that what you like is the best. [782.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But, yeah, I had quite a few people, you know, I got the five inch dead cats and then people started asking me five point five inch dead cats. [790.4] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So I just kind of it's I think my worry is it's a little bit overwhelming to be presented with those kind of choices. [796.76] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: People don't sort of think, well, which one should I get? [801.4] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So, you know, it's it's there at the moment. [804.2] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's a fairly recent thing. And yeah, it's the option is there. [810.28] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And unfortunately, five point five inch, there's not that many props out there. [815.48] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It sort of hasn't doesn't feel like it's caught on, you know, in terms of the manufacturers providing, [821.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, props for it. But yeah. [826.44] Stephen: How do you do your dead cats? Are you just changing the arm length or do you change the X geometry as well? [833.68] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I'm just yeah, I mean, you have to check. [836.64] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: No, I'm not just elongating the arms. [839.0] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You have to position, you know, a motor a certain way and then you automatically get because of where you're pushing them. [847.76] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You're pulling the front motors kind of rearwards. [852.52] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And then you obviously have to then move the rear ones and it ends up looking like a dead cat. [859.96] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But yeah, yeah, I mean, it's it's it actually it had a bit of a bad reputation dead cat. [866.24] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But if it flies, you know, the feedback I'm getting on them is pretty good. [871.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And really, for people who are just wanting to do kind of cruising cinematic video, [877.36] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: which is the reason why you use it because it's just making sure that props are completely out of view, [882.2] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: especially for three users as well. [885.64] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: DJI three who just want to make sure they've got zero prop in the view. [890.24] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: They're spot on. So yeah, I should I should mention that. [893.28] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, for three users, they people want no proper view. [898.16] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So so, yeah, just the options are there. [902.44] Stephen: I do feel that dead cat got a bad reputation maybe five years ago when flight control software was in its infancy. [908.92] Stephen: And I've got a few myself. [911.0] Stephen: And if I fly them really aggressively, then I can bring out prop wash easier on a dead cat than I can on a regular X. [918.48] Stephen: But you have to really slam it down hard into dirty air to do that these days. [924.64] Stephen: Like you can get away with almost all types of flying. [927.76] Stephen: I mean, I'm talking like doing aggressive split turns and then just going from zero throttle to slam full throttle. [933.84] Stephen: And you can get a little bit of a wobble, whereas maybe like a more robust freestyle X frame would just be like still dead. [941.48] Stephen: And it would just be nice and smooth doing that. [943.6] Stephen: But you can fly around that so easily with the dead cat. [946.8] Stephen: I think that reputation is ill deserved. It's still there. [949.76] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. Yeah, I completely agree with you about that. [952.44] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, I also you know, I hate to be cynical, but I'm suspicious of whether people who used to complain about them just had a good tune on them. [961.0] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, because it's it's really a tuning matter, I think. [964.0] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, there's not you know, there's not any real. [968.32] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, it's not a terrible reason why it should perform so badly compared to normal. [972.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, it's just there's a change in the CG a bit. [976.84] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So, yeah, I think you're right. [979.88] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, tuning is much better now. [981.96] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Also, I have I think that a lot of people are flying seven inch dead cat and that is quite that's a stretch. [988.32] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Like in terms of how big the practice is and how far you have to move everything basically to get it out of view. [996.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I think maybe that that's a bit more tricky. [999.12] Stephen: I don't assume you don't change the body if you're just pushing the arms out further to make a seven inch with the same kind of body that you have a five inch that that's going to get distorted. [1010.0] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, you can you can change the body. [1012.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, but even if you look at the what's it called, the L.R. [1016.88] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: What's that open source frame that a lot of people have, that's not Falcon. [1022.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's seven inch long range of frame. [1025.56] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's very well known. [1027.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, they had a whole custom body, but I mean, it's still dead cat. [1032.16] Stephen: But anyway, we've got a couple of people in chat saying that they they want to fly six inch, which is interesting. [1040.88] Stephen: Lack of good props. [1042.84] Stephen: That's one thing that people are commenting on. [1046.88] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, a federal doesn't like the name dead cat. [1049.36] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. Well, he likes cats. [1051.12] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: He's a cat person. Yeah. [1054.2] Jack: It's named after oval, isn't it? [1056.04] Jack: Because he wanted to fly with all of it. [1059.8] Jack: Yeah, all of it because I wanted to fly. [1061.56] Jack: I'm sort of butchering the accident flow with the birds. [1064.8] Curry: And I think, yeah, all of it was a bird. [1067.68] Curry: So how's that dead cat? [1070.68] Jack: He was a cat. [1071.36] Stephen: All of it was a cat who was later in our installation. [1075.56] Stephen: Yeah, a taxidermy was brought into a board. [1078.28] Stephen: You're not talking about all of the puppet. [1080.08] Stephen: You're talking about the Dutch art installation. [1084.0] Stephen: Who was turned into a flying machine. [1085.84] Stephen: Yeah, he was a cat. [1086.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: We love you, Jack. [1088.2] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Oh, that's nice. [1089.56] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: We love you, Steve. [1090.32] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Oh, wow. [1091.4] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Gav is putting a lot of love into the chat. [1094.24] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. Yeah. [1095.2] Stephen: We just had Go Nuts FPV talking about FPV DroneFest 23 last week. [1100.52] Stephen: So, yeah, big up to Go Nuts FPV. [1102.68] Stephen: Oh, yeah. He's done that. [1104.24] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I thought I ought to get a plug in there because Superfly is one of the many sponsors for that event. [1109.44] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Oh, yeah. [1111.68] Jack: Do you remember this? [1115.0] Jack: No one wants to remember this. [1117.08] Jack: Right. [1117.6] Jack: It gets worse. [1118.6] Jack: Hang on. [1118.96] Jack: So you've got the QAV. [1120.04] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: The EMAX one as well. [1121.04] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: What about the EMAX one? [1123.08] Jack: Oh, yeah. [1123.84] Jack: That man, I hated that. [1125.68] Jack: But it got worse because you had this arm extension. [1131.88] Jack: Oh, the extension. [1133.24] Jack: Yeah, nice. [1134.84] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I've got one of those somewhere. [1137.84] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It goes to 16. [1139.4] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: For me, that was an expensive frame that was like lumineer. [1143.52] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, they were asking big bucks for that. [1146.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: When you first start out, you know, well, let's just say you are buying slightly cheaper frames. [1151.68] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, you get what it was on sale at China. [1154.76] Jack: Oh, my word. [1156.16] Jack: It was like it was a war crime and they were angled as well, I think. [1161.6] Stephen: They look like that. [1162.92] Stephen: That's precisely a one crash frame right there. [1165.72] Stephen: Well, look at the cutouts on the arms. [1167.68] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: There's a funny comment from Chris here. [1169.12] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I've got to read this out. [1170.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Chris, he's saying, what's a cat got to do with it? [1175.96] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And then and then crying says that's literally where the name came from. [1182.04] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: That's funny. [1183.0] Stephen: Yeah, there was for those who haven't realized there was an art installation, [1186.96] Stephen: someone who turned taxidermied animals into into RC cars and aircraft. [1193.8] Stephen: And there was there was a cat who got in the press for being turned into a quadcopter. [1199.88] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, if I was a cat lover, I'd be offended by that. [1203.04] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But I found it funny. [1204.8] Stephen: Yeah, I'm a cat lover as well. [1206.96] Stephen: But, you know, I think my cats can stand up for themselves. [1209.28] Stephen: They're they're all for. [1213.24] Jack: Yeah, as long as he died of natural causes and wasn't just short steps into. [1219.92] Jack: I think I got a lot of grief for that. [1222.92] Koel: Yeah, I bet you a lot of activists were like, hey, man, we love cats. [1226.96] Koel: What are you doing? [1227.64] Stephen: I think he did like a mouse as well. [1229.16] Stephen: Didn't he? [1229.6] Stephen: He had all sorts of a rat. [1231.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, he's not he's not he's not treating the his old friend with dignity. [1237.84] Koel: Yeah, I could definitely see that being a cat. [1242.0] Stephen: Yeah, to go and scare the Jesus out of pigeons in the afterlife. [1246.8] Stephen: Like, you know, I was a big fat cat and I never caught a pigeon. [1250.6] Stephen: Well, now I'm going to terrify them. [1252.44] Stephen: Absolutely terrify them. [1255.99] Jack: Yeah, it's like slightly poor taste, I guess. [1259.79] Koel: Yeah, hard to say what I asked the way cat would want to do. [1264.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: All that. Yeah. [1266.35] Jack: Oh, dear. [1267.55] Jack: Maybe when when his owner dies, we should taxidermy him. [1271.63] Jack: Yeah. To one of the really big quad that we can turn them into a bus or something. [1275.91] Jack: Yeah. Yeah. [1280.43] Jack: Just adjusting his cat. [1282.59] Jack: It's not anything because it's what I would have wanted. [1287.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I don't know if you remember in that way. [1291.91] Stephen: You don't want to like be kind of, you know, [1295.15] Stephen: turn into like a leather suit and flown around once you pass away. [1299.27] Stephen: You don't think that would be respectful. [1301.31] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's getting a bit of silence for the lambs, isn't it? [1305.27] Koel: So back to anyhow, this topic. [1309.03] Stephen: So, yeah, we were just talking about the blackout age frame [1312.63] Stephen: and how the alien kind of changed it all, basically, [1315.83] Stephen: and gave people a blueprint for not just a frame that flew, [1319.75] Stephen: but a frame that could crash, which is fundamental to freestyle, right? [1323.23] Stephen: A frame you can crash more than once. [1326.55] Stephen: Yeah, exactly. I mean, it was tough. [1330.79] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It had four millimetre thick arms. Whoa. [1334.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Four millimetre. [1335.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: That was quite thick at the time. [1337.59] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: The ZMR, I think, came out with three millimetre thick arms. [1341.79] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I remember when is that, what's that? Is that a reverb? [1346.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Oh, this is alien. [1347.99] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Oh, this is alien. Yeah. [1349.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. I remember there was some aftermarket arms [1353.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you could get for the ZMR, which were four mil thick. [1355.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I was like, whoa, this is way over the top. [1358.91] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it's just like everything really. [1360.07] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: KV's gone up. [1361.71] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Carbon fibre thickness has gone up. [1363.99] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's just like everything really. [1365.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: The thickness has gone up. [1367.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's and I remember I remember Chad Nowak, [1369.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: who was like complaining about how the hobby hadn't moved forward. [1374.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it was just the same. [1375.71] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Well, this is a while ago. [1376.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But I mean, he was, you know, he he sort of stopped enjoying it. [1380.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Let's put it that way. [1382.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But I think it's I think it's improved a lot. [1386.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, I think the and the biggest improvement for me is [1389.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: is the flight firmware, massive improvement. [1391.91] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, when I was flying the ZMR 250. [1395.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It wasn't good, you know, in terms of it was just very it was very basic. [1401.95] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I guess the tuning information, the tuning advice was was poor. [1406.43] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, it just wasn't that great. [1408.31] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it was Joshua Bardwell at the time who was making videos, [1411.15] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: tech videos, which he doesn't tend to do so much nowadays. But yeah. [1417.87] Stephen: So you supply tuning for all kind of major firmwares past and present on your site, right? [1424.99] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yes, I mean, [1429.19] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: yeah, I think I think tuning is probably one of the most important, you know, aspects. [1433.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I don't I don't think I think a lot of [1436.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: the quality of the gears converge quite a lot. [1439.07] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, I'm not saying buy cheap motors [1441.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: because I think there is a point to buying decent motors and stuff. But, [1446.99] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, people, I think [1449.43] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: it's easy to get obsessed by gear and kind of new hype and stuff like that. [1454.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But the tuning is, you know, it's what makes the whole build. [1459.11] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, you pulls everything together. [1461.95] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And yeah, I mean, you know, when Superfly, when I first started it, [1466.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: it was quite obvious that, you know, the the [1469.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: the Chinese designs were going to improve over time. [1474.99] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, I had to, you know, you had to offer something else. [1478.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And so I decided to put my head into into tuning [1482.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and an understanding how the whole flight control firmware works. [1488.43] Stephen: So it improves the experience, right? [1490.59] Stephen: It's like more of an end to end product. [1492.27] Stephen: Then you don't just kind of get something in the mail and that's it. [1496.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I hope so. [1497.15] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, the feedback I get is good. [1499.99] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And, you know, there's a lot of good pilots like, you know, [1504.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I've got some sponsored pilots now. [1508.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So I've got Holt Backheath, who's a really sick pilot. [1514.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I've got a whole, you know, they're on the website and I'm kind of building up a team. [1518.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And they, you know, a lot of people know their way around the flight controller. [1522.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But there is I would say that if you're kind of really geeking out on it [1527.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and really going into the details, you're usually going to kind of generate [1533.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: a more a deeper understanding than the guys who are just who are really good at flying. [1538.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Not always, but I think that's a good thing because it's, you know, [1543.59] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: just adds value and kind of, you know, it's I love to [1549.19] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I love to make make them fly really well. [1552.19] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's very satisfying. [1555.31] Koel: Yeah, it does seem like it's a bit of a dark art, though, right? [1557.67] Koel: The tuning side of it. [1558.63] Koel: It's for a lot of people, unless they really dive in and try to get there. [1563.03] Koel: Like for me, I've only been flying for less than two years now, [1566.59] Koel: but had some pretty bad crashes last summer. [1569.47] Koel: Had to rebuild, get new motors and, you know, things just didn't, [1574.67] Koel: you know, they didn't fly the same afterwards. [1576.15] Koel: So I had to dive down a deep path and it was [1580.27] Koel: it was very trying, to say the least, because [1584.67] Koel: I don't know what these numbers are going to do and these numbers are going to do. [1587.23] Koel: I'm trying to see what they do and the balance and whatnot. [1590.71] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But how long have you been flying for? [1593.35] Koel: I'd only been flying for about maybe around a year or so. [1598.79] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, it is people in this community. [1601.99] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I don't think people often admit it, but it is actually really difficult. [1606.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, tuning and really understanding how the big controller works [1610.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: in the system that we're using is hard. [1613.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I mean, without sounding like a. [1619.79] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Like most people don't really understand it. [1622.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, and that's why when when people post something on Facebook, [1626.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you'll get like answers that are just all over the place [1630.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: because, you know, it is it is, you know, it's genuinely difficult [1635.31] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and there's no shame. [1636.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I think, you know, I'm missing that. [1638.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I think that the preset system that we got in piece of flight is really good. [1643.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Crumpt has done presets for a kiss. [1646.71] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I think, you know, all the help that people can get is a good thing. [1650.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And, you know, you know, people, [1655.74] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: even though there are some pretty good guides now, you know, [1658.82] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: the beat of flight tuning guide, some of them are over half an hour long. [1662.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And that is, you know, it's a lot of the time. [1666.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And if there's a good preset, I just think go for it. [1669.7] Stephen: Slap it. I get people kind of halfway there. [1673.62] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's not halfway, because once you the reason why it seems like [1678.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: when I first started out, I used to struggle with all the different [1681.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: all the things that everyone else struggles with. [1684.02] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it's very easy to turn it into [1687.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: when you don't understand how the system works, you become [1690.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you project superstition onto it. [1692.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. And it becomes magic. [1693.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: This is my best build. [1694.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I can't touch it, you know, because you don't want to mess it up. [1699.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. And that's the thing is because it's just because there's so many, [1703.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, it's it's overwhelming in terms of the amount of stuff [1706.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: that you have to know to be able to just be able to crank them out. [1709.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it takes quite a long time for people to get that good [1712.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: that they can just crank out, build after build, and there's no issues [1715.66] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: because you fully understand what's going on. [1717.42] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So it's it's not really a dark arc. [1719.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's actually it's just an engineering system. [1722.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's, you know, and it's as simple as that. [1724.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Once you understand what each of the parameters does on each axis [1729.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and all that stuff, a black box, you know, [1732.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, as you kiss guys in the in the group who are kind of a bit [1737.14] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: maybe anti black box, but black boxes. [1741.58] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's brilliant. [1742.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, it's amazing because it just shows you everything that's happening. [1745.14] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And once you can understand what it means, [1749.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: it's like it's like looking into a black box. [1752.18] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, it's just you can answer all the all the problems. [1756.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You can solve the problems. [1757.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, it's it's very good. [1759.54] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it's amazing. [1760.3] Stephen: You're looking at, you know, the inputs because your hands are doing those, [1763.14] Stephen: but you don't necessarily know. [1765.34] Stephen: But you can guess. [1765.98] Stephen: I mean, I I do most of my tuning just [1769.14] Stephen: visually because I've been a hurry and not everything I have [1772.22] Stephen: as a black box historically because I was flying cheap boards. [1775.18] Stephen: But being able to see what the response is when you move the stick, that's. [1781.82] Stephen: That's the basics of it, right? [1783.54] Stephen: That's where everything comes down to like I've requested this. [1786.46] Stephen: Did I get what I wanted? [1788.02] Stephen: If I didn't get what I wanted, then let's change what's going on in the middle. [1793.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: This is not what I wanted. [1795.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, yeah. [1797.1] Koel: I mean, I came from like I come from a background using like camera gimbals [1802.06] Koel: and whatnot, where you have to, you know, tune the different axes and whatnot. [1805.9] Koel: Obviously, it's a little more simple, I feel, then then PIDS for a quad. [1810.06] Koel: But even even that, it takes a lot of, you know, fiddling around [1815.1] Koel: and a lot of just seeing what works. Right. [1817.46] Koel: Because I mean, I guess the logs are really good because you get a visual [1822.3] Koel: and a full out, you know, data sort of set on it. [1825.38] Koel: But I guess the camera gimbal side of things is a bit more like, how does it react? [1830.14] Koel: I mean, I guess you can kind of apply that to quads, too, though. Right. [1832.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So yeah, I mean, I guess it's a little bit more, you know, it's you can [1839.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I guess with a gimbal, you've got it in your hands and you can just kind of do it [1841.54] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: a bit easier. But yeah, it's the same. [1843.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I think it's probably this. [1844.18] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, how many axes have you got on the gimbal as well? [1846.7] Koel: Three axes. Yeah. [1848.62] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Because I think that's what kind of confuses [1851.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: that kind of overwhelms people when you've got that grid and you've got the axes [1854.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and then you've got each term for the axes. [1855.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it kind of suddenly it suddenly seems, you know, [1860.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: sort of quite quite confusing. [1862.42] Koel: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. [1864.06] Koel: I mean, I got a good point. [1865.58] Koel: Oh, sorry. Go ahead, Kerry. [1867.22] Curry: Sorry. I was just going to say, I think I'm in the majority of people who are [1872.34] Curry: lazy stroke can't do it because I kind of used to know what pits were. [1878.3] Curry: And then when Beataflight went all about the filters, I was like, [1881.1] Curry: what? I didn't really learn it. [1883.38] Curry: And now it's the case of it flies. [1885.86] Curry: OK, that will do. [1887.54] Curry: I haven't got much time. [1889.18] Curry: I just want to fly and have some fun rather than repeatedly try this flight [1893.22] Curry: and then try and figure out how to tune it better and potentially make it worse. [1896.78] Curry: I think I think that's where perhaps a lot of people are. [1898.74] Curry: It's just like, yeah, it's OK. [1900.42] Curry: That'll do rather than going and trying to hone it down and get everything just perfect. [1906.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, I think that's totally fair enough. [1909.1] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, ultimately, people just want to go out and fly. [1913.14] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I think most people and I think there is quite a contingent, you know, in the hobby [1917.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: who are people who are technically minded and they're really fascinated [1921.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: by the technical side of the hobby and then want to dig really deeply into the tuning. [1925.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I would say I probably fall into that group, but [1929.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: but I'm not one of those. [1932.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Like I was I would say there's a technocratic [1936.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: approach to tuning that you can take, which kind of suggests [1941.14] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: that there's some sort of perfect tune and that tuning should only be about [1947.54] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: tracking of the set point, I following exactly the input was not necessarily the input. [1956.62] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I my kind of [1961.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: my philosophy, I would say, is that you want to have very good control of the quad [1966.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and you want to have very good prop wash, but you also [1971.03] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: there should be a 10 percent, let's say, area for feel, which is essentially [1977.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: right, you know, if we're flying freestyle and this is just for freestyle, it's not for like, [1981.31] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, sending a drone off on a very defined mission or something. [1986.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But if you're flying freestyle, it should be a little bit, in my opinion, like a musical instrument. [1992.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You should be kind of just throwing it around [1995.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: whether you're making video or something and you kind of you like the way [2001.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: that it moves when you make an input and you see the input through the goals. [2006.11] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It feels good. And I think that, you know, tweaking the parameters, [2011.07] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, there's a lot of there's a lot of room for that. [2013.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So I am I'm kind of a supporter of that approach. [2017.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And people some people liking it this way, some people liking it that way. [2022.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And, you know, and I just I aim to set it up in a way that I like. [2026.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And then I share that with, you know, with the customers. [2029.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And also there is a preset for everyone as well. [2032.67] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: There's also don't get me wrong. [2034.51] Curry: I absolutely love the idea of of doing it. [2038.11] Curry: It's just a case of like, I can't do it and I don't want to have to spend time on it. [2044.19] Curry: But yeah, I can certainly respect a properly tuned quad. [2047.47] Curry: And you can certainly tell the difference, something that has been properly worked on [2051.07] Curry: versus it's OK. [2053.39] Curry: And, yeah, you get a nice feel from it. [2055.31] Curry: But it's just it's just for I think a lot of people like me, there's there's a [2060.67] Curry: said there's there's a sort of a mix of laziness and can't can't do it because I'm [2066.83] Curry: I'm just busy wanting to fly. [2068.19] Curry: But yeah, I wish I wish I could. [2070.11] Curry: I wish I was like I had somebody next to me here. [2073.31] Curry: So tune that and give it back to me and make it work. [2077.47] Curry: That's that's kind of what's what's interesting when I looked at your frames [2080.91] Curry: it's like, yes, you get it. [2082.83] Curry: You get a tune from me, which I think is very cool because it's just like this will [2088.83] Curry: work on this. [2089.87] Curry: I've checked it. [2093.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, it's definitely checked. [2095.23] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, I sort of wasted I shouldn't say waste, but I spend a ridiculous amount of [2101.15] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: time obsessing about about how I want to tune it and tweaking filters and stuff like that. [2108.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But yeah, but there is there is a five inch preset for beta flight for for everyone for [2114.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: so it's three, three, four inch, five inch, six inch and seven inch Superfly tunes in [2119.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: the beta flight configurator. [2122.83] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I've got this calculator on this on the website. [2126.19] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: There's a link in the preset. [2128.19] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You can go and you can put in your KV and what what library you're using. [2134.19] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it will spit out where to put the master multiplier. [2137.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So it's basically a system. [2139.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: This is calculated from the RPM because I think it affects the stability of the [2146.59] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: pick control loop like an authority bias. [2150.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, yeah, exactly. [2151.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, yeah, that's that's that's what it is. [2153.79] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I think yeah, I mean, yeah, I noticed I mean, some of the other guys like Chris [2161.07] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Rosser in the tech, they they don't account for the different KV that people use. [2166.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, technically, if you have the PD balance, you should just be able to raise or lower. [2174.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Like there's some kiss guys here. [2175.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I've noticed that the kisses is I think it's a bit more stable in terms of different KV. [2182.91] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it just depends on the balance of the pits. [2185.71] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And, you know, and the speed of the motors. [2189.55] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But, you know, it's ultimately, you know, it's just a case of a small adjustment, you know. [2196.99] Stephen: Yeah, yeah. [2198.03] Stephen: There's also this kind of the feel that comes into it, which a lot of people would say are [2201.71] Stephen: rates, but I guess comes down to the preference of a lot of the pilots who are flying it. [2205.87] Stephen: A beta flight having a big racer contingent as well as a big freestyle contingent. [2210.03] Stephen: There's this spectrum of you can have a tune for a frame in two different directions. [2214.99] Stephen: One towards the freestyle with HD and super smooth. [2219.23] Stephen: And you don't care if you're going to make the motor hot. [2222.03] Stephen: You want good footage and the other towards the racer where you want jerky twitch response [2227.15] Stephen: and you want to keep the motors cool. [2228.91] Stephen: And you don't really care if you have a bit of a wobble in your video, [2232.03] Stephen: just so long as you get around the course and don't burn your motors out. [2235.55] Stephen: And that kind of the polar opposites of tuning means that there's no single perfect tune. [2242.59] Stephen: There's kind of what works with the airframe in terms of general aerodynamics and thrust [2248.91] Stephen: vectoring and then how much you're willing to tolerate smoking your motors versus how [2254.35] Stephen: clean you want the video. [2255.47] Stephen: And that's coming down to how much you could push that authority right. [2258.51] Stephen: Because if you get it right on the edge, you know, you get it right on the knife edge, [2262.11] Stephen: then there's a chance that if you just snick the tip off a propeller, [2265.39] Stephen: you could burn the motor out when you do the next punch out. [2268.11] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, definitely in the case of the filters. [2272.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, if you look at a log from one of the Beach Flight pilots, Limon, [2278.51] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and he's yeah, he's got a cool YouTube channel as well. [2281.07] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But I mean, it's so much high throttle. [2285.15] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's almost insane. [2286.59] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Like I thought it was a joke. [2289.79] Stephen: It's like full throttle. [2292.27] Stephen: He's got that that warning that comes on screen when he's at 100% throttle. [2296.27] Stephen: Yeah, you don't have to wait long to see it. [2298.75] Stephen: It's constantly flashing on the OSD. [2301.15] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, so freestylers can definitely get away with less filtering, which is good because [2306.59] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: then the prop wash is more important for freestylers. [2310.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So we want to just remove as much of the filtering as possible. [2313.95] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And generally, freestylers, you're just cruising around low mid throttle and then with the punch [2318.67] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: outs, you're chucking in the air and doing your tricks and then coming down and, you know, [2324.11] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: pulling out of it. [2325.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But the racers just are they're crazy. [2329.79] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So it's a very good test of how robust, you know, more B to flight filters are or whatever [2337.63] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: firmware you're going to use to give it to put it in the hands of a hardcore racer because it's [2344.75] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, they really test the equipment to the limits. [2346.83] Stephen: I think they won't allow you to spend an extra couple of milliseconds making the [2352.03] Stephen: signals nice and smooth before you send them to the motors. [2354.51] Stephen: They're like, no, we don't care. [2355.55] Stephen: We don't care. [2356.11] Stephen: We've got to have that twitch response, which I think [2360.27] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, they use quite a lot of feed forward because the precision is just, you know, [2365.39] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and quite a lot of item. [2366.59] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I think the item in B to flight recently has been boosted a lot. [2369.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I'm actually a fan of just keeping that not too much item. [2373.95] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But the item has boosted so much in B to flight because they did quite a lot of [2378.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: kind of racer focused development just before I came. [2383.07] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And when you're looking at the logs of lots of kind of really fast and kind of wide turns, [2393.07] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you can see that it needs more item in order to keep to hold the tracking basically. [2397.87] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And it's just not it's something that doesn't come up with the freestylers because, [2401.47] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, we're not we're not flying anything like that. [2404.35] Frank: But yeah, I turn it down for that reason a little bit. [2434.35] Frank: Pause slash let's drone out. [2437.07] Stephen: Now go nuts FPV praising your your frame here. [2441.31] Stephen: End to end customer experience there. [2444.35] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, cheers, dude. [2449.07] Jack: Superfly. [2450.19] Jack: If someone or Steve, sorry. [2454.03] Jack: If someone wanted to get into tuning and better understand it, [2458.75] Jack: do you have any sort of guide or videos you particularly would recommend? [2469.44] Jack: Well, the half hour beat flight ones. [2473.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, I don't know if there's if there's kind of a really simple short video. [2484.54] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: That's a tricky one. [2485.82] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, because because the ones that Chris roster and U of E, [2489.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I hope U of E text got one that he's done recently. [2491.82] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I know that Chris Ross has done some good ones, but they are quite involved. [2496.62] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: They do involve logging. [2499.26] Stephen: They do involve using classic approach, isn't there? [2501.74] Stephen: Just doing it by eye where you like, try and push the filters up with your flight, [2506.94] Stephen: for example, and you take off and do some maneuvers as aggressively as possible. [2511.42] Stephen: And the instant you see oscillation start to occur, you back down the filters by a stop. [2517.1] Stephen: And then you come back and you start looking at P and I in detail. [2521.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: That's yeah, that's kind of the old fashioned. [2523.42] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And that's how I learned. [2524.86] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I remember Stingy, Stinger Swalman. [2527.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I was just going to say, yeah, he made one. [2530.94] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: He made one ages ago, and he kind of did the classic one where you kind of [2535.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and you got to learn to look out for the behaviors. [2538.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I mean, if I'm honest, I do think the basement tuning is, [2543.74] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: if you want to tune it yourself, it's the best to just do that, [2548.7] Stephen: which is like a mesh fencing mask or something. [2551.42] Stephen: What's that? [2552.22] Stephen: If you've got like a mesh fencing mask or something, maybe. [2555.66] Stephen: Don't know if I try in here. [2558.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Doesn't have to be in the basement. [2559.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, that came from Brian, Brian White, who said he'd be watching. [2565.42] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But yeah, he was he's got a basement where he does all his quad stuff. [2569.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So when he was developing Pit Toolbox, he had to do a lot of it in the basement. [2576.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And yeah, that's that's where it came from. [2579.18] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But yeah, I mean, shout out to Brian and that tool, because it's kind of I would [2583.66] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: say it's revolutionized tuning. [2586.94] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, the step response there is super useful. [2592.14] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Is that the yeah, yeah, I remember that. [2594.54] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's like in a trailer park. [2596.54] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, yeah, I mean, I know it's obviously easy for me to say this, but [2603.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I just wish people would just use my tune. [2605.42] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, just use my tune in the configurator. [2607.74] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, because it's it's with the with the with the calculator. [2611.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's just it's it's so much easier. [2614.62] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And then you can go and fly. [2616.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: If you want to get really into tuning, then you have to go. [2619.66] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I would I would say go and go and learn the basement tuning method and watch [2624.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Pit Toolbox videos or watch Chris Ross's videos. [2628.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, there there are there are some things I would say, Steve, and I don't know if you [2632.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: agree, but, you know, there's a bunch of people who obviously contribute to beatify. [2638.86] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But it's far from kind of a monolith of thought. [2642.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, everyone's got slightly different opinions about things. [2645.5] Stephen: And, you know, there's races and freestylers and there's people on the extremes of each of those. [2652.38] Stephen: Definitely. There's a spectrum there. [2653.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Exactly. There's there's quite a big spectrum and everyone does things slightly differently and [2658.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: there's a few a few things I would do slightly differently on the basement tuning. [2662.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But, you know, fundamentally, you know, it covers, you know, it covers a lot. [2669.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And yeah, so that's that's the best way I would say to long answer presets are great. [2675.34] Stephen: But I think a lot of the guys here may be flying. [2678.14] Stephen: I know Jack and Cole yourself, you obviously make five inch frames. [2681.82] Stephen: These other guys fly them. [2682.78] Stephen: But I started out building silly little micros and things that are not quite five inches, [2688.46] Stephen: you know, and for that, that there were there was no advice. [2693.26] Stephen: And maybe there's a few presets now. [2695.02] Stephen: Historically, there was almost zero presets. [2697.18] Stephen: And so I had to kind of figure it out and just rule of thumb it, which was generally [2701.66] Stephen: I was finding the smaller and lighter my builds were, the more overall pit gain I would need [2707.66] Stephen: so that the more I'd have to increase the ratios of pits because they were, [2711.34] Stephen: I guess, lower authority when you that's why people fly five inch that it's that sweet spot [2715.82] Stephen: of power and weight you're getting. [2719.5] Stephen: You're minimizing having to carry around the flight controller and ESC and VTX and camera [2724.46] Stephen: that that weight is kind of invisible. [2726.94] Stephen: You've got a decent sized motor, a good disc area for the props and everything kind of is optimal. [2734.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yes. [2734.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Sweet. [2735.34] Stephen: Just a lot of vibration. [2737.42] Stephen: Yeah. [2738.06] Stephen: But but if you can't fly a five inch because you're next to like a crowded park and you [2742.3] Stephen: want to fly like a little two inch move, you've got to kind of scratch your head and think, [2746.46] Stephen: well, what's happening here? [2747.98] Stephen: People say I should only have like I at this rate, but I need it twice that like, [2753.1] Stephen: and I've got some bills where I'm flying like a two S two inch ultralight. [2757.9] Stephen: And I've literally got that pit multiplier at two two hundred percent. [2762.22] Stephen: And it's it's just maxed out. [2764.46] Stephen: And then I had to add like thrust linear to give it a little more oomph as well. [2769.82] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So yes, I haven't been buying this. [2771.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You've probably been, Stephen, you sorry to kind of you probably been buying them when I have. [2775.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But perhaps you got some from the from the past. [2779.58] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But what I was hoping that out of the factory, they're tuned because if you get one of those [2783.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: on defaults, you'd be in trouble. [2786.62] Stephen: Yeah. [2787.02] Stephen: Yeah. [2787.42] Stephen: And building your own with like AIO flight controller. [2791.02] Stephen: You're just like, yeah, let's see. [2794.3] Stephen: I think, you know, from from looking at the manufacturers with Betaflight, [2797.34] Stephen: like sometimes you've got vendors who have a reputation for doing a really good job of tuning. [2802.22] Stephen: But you've also got vendors who might be very price competitive, [2805.5] Stephen: but really just throwing stuff in a box and selling it. [2809.58] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Well, we ought to I mean, in the in the presets, we ought to have, [2814.14] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, the main the main basis covered in the Betaflight presets, at least. [2820.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, it's a bit tricky for logging. [2824.3] Koel: It looks like we actually have a question from Dominic Clifton there [2829.58] Koel: asking you, yeah, what are your goals for the next 12 months? [2834.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Well, my goals. [2839.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Well, I'd like to just keep Superfly keep it going, keep it growing. [2847.18] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Release, you know, I've got some more releases. [2850.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And, you know, in the pipeline and yeah, I mean, that's it. [2862.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I'm not very good at answering that question, I don't think. [2865.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Wait and see. [2866.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Watch this space. [2867.58] Jack: Watch this space. [2868.86] Jack: We've roughly got 10 minutes. [2870.3] Jack: We're going to try and get through a load of questions. [2872.94] Jack: You ready, Steve? [2874.3] Jack: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. [2875.98] Jack: Sonic Tonic asks, when do we get to see more Superfly freestyle videos? [2884.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, I haven't I haven't posted one on YouTube is really, really old. [2890.54] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, I'm basically I've been hoping to get out and about a bit more this year. [2896.94] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, I'm kind of battling a health issue. [2901.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Some people who know me know I've had chronic fatigue for quite a long time. [2905.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So that slightly restricts me from from kind of going to the best the best spots. [2911.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But yeah, I hope to get out more and meet some of the pilots this year. [2919.02] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So yeah, hopefully, hopefully some cool spots because I do most of my testing literally in [2923.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: a field, you know, and I'm kind of a real test nerd. [2926.94] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So I actually get a lot of pleasure just through going out and just testing, you know, [2931.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and I've got a pretty, pretty kind of janky set up. [2936.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But like, I'm still, you know, again, people know this, some people notice about me. [2939.66] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But I still use these kind of crappy box goggles and analog goggles. [2945.58] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. [2946.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Wow. [2947.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: What's your box goggle of choice, then? [2950.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's a modified Eosheen EV 800. [2953.74] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So yeah, [2955.18] Stephen: a word in the chat, please go and buy this guy's frames. [2959.58] Stephen: Like he needs some new goggles. [2965.1] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I've got DJ and I've got walks now. [2967.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But I just like I'm just, you know, I just haven't got round to fully integrating it into my [2973.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: daily workflow. [2974.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And the reality is, for me, is that I guess I get the enjoyment of FPV just through analog anyway. [2981.58] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So it's, you know, so when I put these on, it's nice. [2985.18] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's just like, it's the same thing, but just with a clearer picture. [2988.62] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I'm still doing flips. [2989.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I'm still experiencing the out of body experience. [2992.06] Stephen: And if you haven't got tons of interference near you, then probably works just great. [2996.06] Stephen: Well, I don't. [2996.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, because I'm not. [2998.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: This is going to be the problem. [2999.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So when I go to drone fest, I've kind of had a talk with myself. [3002.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Look, Steve, you've really got to win yourself off these box goggles, [3006.94] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: because you can't turn up to drone fest using them. [3011.02] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You can, but you might not be seeing anything. [3014.54] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. [3016.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So I've got to I've got to I've got to move on. [3021.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, you get used to a certain field of view, you get used to, you know, [3027.74] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: certain cameras and stuff. [3029.02] Stephen: And yeah, just like a comfortable old pair of shoes fit your head perfectly. [3036.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But the O3 has a good field of view. [3038.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I think I can live with the previous. [3041.82] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: The Vista used to have so much distortion when you roll. [3044.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So when you come back, it looks like the earth is like a bouncing ball. [3049.1] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know that, you know, that view. [3051.1] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I hate that. [3053.5] Stephen: I would just get terrified when I did anything around trees, [3057.66] Stephen: because I seem to have got this knack of I put the power to a sensible value, [3063.1] Stephen: run 50 megabit mode, but and use the Nebula Pro camera. [3067.1] Stephen: And I can make DJI just turn into a mosaic. [3069.9] Stephen: The instant I fly anything with lots of leaves on the trees. [3073.66] Stephen: And I was doing a punch out recently at this 10 S five inch that I flew [3078.94] Stephen: on beta flight with VTX DJI, VTX. [3082.86] Stephen: And I punched out above the canopy and it looked great. [3085.66] Stephen: And then I went to dive down into the canopy and like halfway through the dive, [3089.26] Stephen: the picture just turned into a series of large green squares and brown squares. [3094.62] Stephen: And it was utterly terrifying. [3096.3] Stephen: And that seems to happen more often than I would like on DJI. [3099.26] Stephen: Not yet on walks now, but with DJI, that was terrifying. [3103.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Crank your crank up the power and make sure you fully irradiate that tree. [3107.58] Curry: I mean, I'll say that. [3111.02] Curry: I showed you the video I did on walks down. [3113.18] Curry: It was much the same thing. [3114.14] Curry: I was flying in a corridor where there's grass there and there's lots of leave trees. [3120.78] Curry: And it's like walks now just decided in this compression to say, [3125.42] Curry: yeah, it's all just green and just like flat shaded the entire thing. [3128.94] Curry: It's like, okay, so we're not getting detailed. [3131.34] Curry: We're just getting smudge is a smudge of green. [3134.94] Curry: That's going to be that. [3135.74] Curry: That's going to be the background. [3137.74] Curry: And then the latency went out to like 300 milliseconds or something. [3140.46] Curry: And it got a bit scary. [3143.1] Curry: That was fun. [3145.02] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: He's still rocking. [3145.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And then Curry, no, I'm working. [3149.74] Curry: I'm working on walks now at the moment. [3152.78] Curry: It's good when it's good. [3155.18] Curry: I flew around some trees today and that was not today, yesterday. [3158.46] Curry: And that was that was really nice. [3159.74] Curry: Actually, it's like you could see a bit more. [3161.9] Curry: And then I feel myself in the thing and this isn't that much better than analog. [3165.02] Curry: And then I go back to analog in the same site and say, oh, this is like looking for a potato. [3169.1] Curry: This is this is much worse. [3170.62] Curry: But you can get used to things and you can have the same amount of [3175.58] Curry: fun depending where you are. [3177.34] Curry: You just got a sort of something. [3179.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: There's something kind of adjust. [3182.14] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, there's something I like about analog. [3184.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I think, yeah, that's a splodge. [3188.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I've got a question from Ryan. [3189.58] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: How is a newest piece of light impacted tuning accessibility from your parts? [3194.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Has it crippled deep dive tuning? [3198.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: No, I think there's quite a lot of people who actually want to go into the deep dive tuning. [3204.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I don't know if you Stephen, if you notice this, but there's still quite a lot of people [3208.62] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: because I have people turning up on my Discord server who are doing it and then struggling. [3214.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And I have to sort of say to them, please choose my tune. [3222.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: But yeah, it's yeah, I guess it's because people are interested in the technology. [3229.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I think people who do cord copters are just generally [3232.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: quite tech savvy people who are interested in tech stuff. [3236.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: So they naturally get interested in that side and want to explore it. [3243.98] Stephen: There have been some stuff who some people who are like, these are my magic numbers. [3248.38] Stephen: My magic numbers make everything work. [3250.38] Stephen: I must enter my magic numbers. [3252.54] Stephen: And we've had to sort of wean them off and say, look, there is a relationship between these that [3260.46] Stephen: comes down to the balance of your quad, how much your weight distribution is to the front or to [3264.86] Stephen: the rear. And you just need to kind of tune these in and then increase this one until you've got [3272.22] Stephen: that snap and grab that you want. And then it's going to be okay. [3276.54] Stephen: You don't need to get this matrix of magic numbers anymore. [3281.1] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, there's definitely people who are quite hard to convince. [3286.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Like they've decided that this works well. [3289.02] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And even if you know that they need to do that, then yeah, yeah, magic numbers. [3294.86] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, that's generally a sign if anyone says the word magic, you normally [3300.14] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: know that they're really just they're in the world of superstition. [3305.66] Stephen: It's become a religion. Yeah. [3307.5] Stephen: Yeah. Yeah. [3309.9] Jack: Um, right. I also asks, why does my busted up flip mode still fly better than 90% of my prebuilt quads? [3321.9] Jack: Best flying quad I've had today, hardcore cine fly and it feels like an extension [3326.86] Jack: myself is the easiest description. There's a worn out frame, soften things up and [3333.74] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: No, I think he's just buttering me up, to be honest. [3337.02] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, he's, but yeah, I mean, it does fly well. I will say that flip mode with a good tuning. [3354.06] Jack: It's spot on. [3356.54] Jack: Sonic tonic also asks, when do we get the super fly sonic tonic frame? [3362.62] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, I mean, I can put that on the list. I've got like, I am I'm sponsoring people now. And I used [3372.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: to have a bit of a cynical view about sponsorship. But I am I am doing it now. And I'm really, I'm [3379.38] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: really happy with you know, there's great guys who are part of the super fly team. And, and if, [3389.06] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, if, if you have enough of a following, you know, you can do a kind of custom version or [3396.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: something like that. Yeah, I mean, definitely, definitely open to that sort of thing. And we did [3402.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: obviously did the sync mode. And that was, you know, that was the first one I did with sync FPV. [3408.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: And that went down quite well. And it's yeah, I'm happy with how that came out. Colored carbon. [3416.26] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I was always a bit cynical, well, not cynical, but like, I thought that it would be too much, [3420.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: because carbon itself looks cool, you know, on its own. But, but yeah, just just keeping it to the [3427.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: body, I think, has kind of solved that one. It kind of gets the balance right. And looks cool with [3434.98] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: the matte carbon as well. So yeah, there's nothing more with a bit of bling. Doesn't, doesn't, [3445.22] Stephen: doesn't, doesn't, manufacturers have been doing it for ages, haven't they might as well get in on [3449.78] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: the game. Yeah, well, you've got to be super fly. I mean, that's the whole point. Obviously, [3456.42] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you got to, yeah, you got to, you got to look at your qualities. You've got to perform well, [3461.22] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: but it's also, you know, it doesn't hurt if it looks cool as well. You've got to be the pimp at [3465.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: the field. Yeah, as much as drone enthusiasts can be pimps at the same time. Yeah. Pimp nerd [3472.98] Stephen: Venn diagram is actually small. There's one about 10s five inch. So a while ago, [3482.58] Stephen: I decided to buy something random that I saw on a forum for a firmware that I don't really fly. And [3490.66] Stephen: I kept it around for a while thinking what am I going to do with this? Can I be bothered to go in [3495.06] Stephen: and use this application that I wasn't really interested in. And then I saw that Maytech were [3500.66] Stephen: doing an F405 flight controller, which you could run beta flight. So I so I slapped that in there. [3508.98] Stephen: And here we are 1100 KV on an AOS five, I'm afraid to apologize, but at least it's another Brit [3517.14] Stephen: with DJI Vista. And yeah, it's designed for 10s to 5s packs in series, which just about mounts on [3526.18] Stephen: top, I've had to mess around with the wiring a wee bit. It's got a couple of capacitors for good [3530.82] Stephen: measure. It's a little bit terrifying. Just how are you? Sorry, how are you mounting them on the [3536.82] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: top? Like is it too like that? Is it like a longitude? Yeah, I did experiment with so many [3544.66] Stephen: different ways of doing this. What I ended up with was, I'll show you. Is it one on top and one [3549.46] Stephen: underneath? No, no, nothing so sophisticated. I simply put them in like near and back to back. [3563.3] Stephen: Side to side with the plugs in the middle. Double fisting. [3569.62] Stephen: I aim to please. [3572.34] Stephen: What do you? Right, there we are. So something like that. As my video decided to crap out me, [3578.98] Stephen: great timing video. Thank you. Oh, yeah. Too much double fisting. Linux drivers. [3586.42] Stephen: AMD drivers, unfortunately. [3592.26] Stephen: How many, Stephen, how many ma are there? So 700 ma 5s. So 700 ma of 10s, basically. [3603.38] Stephen: Let me see if I can get this camera back. It's kind of nuts. [3606.82] Stephen: There we are. So there you are. And then I've got an adapter that takes two XT 30s because they [3613.54] Stephen: only need to be XT 30s on a 700 ma pack and puts those into a single XT 60. And then I've got a [3620.02] Stephen: big long XT 60 lead because it's 12 gauge, but it doesn't matter too much because I'm only dealing [3626.9] Stephen: with 700 ma packs. So the current isn't that much. And then that reaches over the top. It's not the [3632.02] Stephen: best and it wouldn't deal with hardcore bashing at all. CG is looking quite, quite really heavy [3637.3] Stephen: there. Yeah, it's well, that's because I haven't actually pushed them in properly to that. It [3642.58] Stephen: should be. Okay, can you get it? Yeah. The fly feel the fly position is more like that. [3651.46] Stephen: Beautiful. Right at the back of the batteries. And then I've got another strap at the front [3656.58] Stephen: of the batteries that I've only got one. Okay, okay. Yeah. So it flies surprisingly tame. It's [3665.14] Stephen: not like it's 1100 KV. It's 1100 KV. So it's a quick 1100 KV on 10s is roughly kind of [3676.74] Stephen: on success about a 1900 KV. That's that type of feel. So it's just a different characteristic. [3686.9] Stephen: Like when you do a punch out, you get much less voltage sag because it's happy to just give those [3691.22] Stephen: big bursts of current without the internal resistance that cells shooting up it seems. [3696.02] Stephen: Everything just feels a little bit more efficient, but it is cumbersome. I mean, ergonomically, [3700.42] Stephen: it's a nightmare. It's not. It's a pain to get the batteries on. No one's making any 10s packs. [3706.74] Stephen: But just for giggles. So I saw someone did an A test build and I've got an A test seven inch, [3713.54] Stephen: but on the five inch, I've only got six S builds and four S builds. So yeah, just for a giggle. [3720.42] Stephen: Sorry, I went on for a while on that one, but that's it. Yeah, it's cool. It's nice, [3725.7] Stephen: interesting. Yeah, just to see what happens. Do something different. Yeah. [3729.78] Jack: Have we got any other questions? No. Other than the motor tuning, does anyone [3737.7] Jack: do any both use the, what is it? The motor mixing? I think that was it. [3745.46] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, that's a bit of a blast from the past that one motor mixing. [3750.5] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: No, I don't think anyone does it anymore. I mean, I remember that. I remember that trend. [3754.02] Stephen: I remember doing it myself. I think you needed a different mix for dead cats and things, didn't [3761.94] Stephen: they? But oh, you're a different geometry, you need to change your motor mixing. Yeah, I mean, [3766.66] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: technically, it would be appropriate to do it with dead cat. I think in the end, it just people just [3771.86] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: realized that it didn't make much difference. Because I think I think the motor mixing, you [3777.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: know, I remember doing this, I would measure the motor positions. And then you'd, you'd actually [3783.3] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: specifically set the PID controller to expect the motors to be where they were, you know, [3788.34] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: where you told it. But yeah, I mean, it just fizzled out that that that craze. I mean, there's [3796.74] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: good, there's been a lot of, do you remember angled motor mounts? I think Jack does. They were, [3803.84] Stephen: they were pretty rubbish. Before people figured out that they could tilt. Was that to not tilt [3810.48] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: cameras? That was the blue weirdly as well. Because the motors weren't on the right plane. [3817.76] Jack: But yeah, yeah, that's, that's gone. Do you remember mount in one motor at the rear to push [3826.88] Jack: you along? Do you remember that like boom, copter? I mean, I remember someone doing it. [3834.08] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah. To be honest with you, I mean, I'm quite conservative, not conservative, [3838.96] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: maybe traditionalist. You know, when I started designing frames, I kind of thought, right, [3843.12] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: you know, I'm going to really seriously think about some super cool way to design a frame [3848.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: that no one's done before. And I spent a bit of time looking, looking around, you know, [3853.76] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: what other people have done. And I just came to the conclusion that actually, where we were at [3858.56] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: that point, was actually probably the best place to be. And that, you know, that actually trying, [3867.2] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I mean, I've seen people try and do kind of have crazy ideas, but they always flopped. And, you [3873.28] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: know, I think something that's not very commonly said, but we're actually, I think, very lucky [3879.36] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: to have access to carbon fiber, some materials that we use for frames, and the off the shelf [3886.24] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: parts that we can use to build them with. You know, I wouldn't have ended up designing frames [3891.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: if it wasn't, if there wasn't that availability. Because if you were to hire, to get a professional [3897.52] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: company to try and design a drone frame, it's really expensive. But the fact that we've got [3902.48] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: access to carbon fiber, which is such a tough material, we've got the standoffs, we've got [3906.72] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: screws off the shelf, you can come up with designs that perform. There's like a major, [3913.84] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: what's the word, punch. You get a lot of bang for your buck, basically, with a force multiplier, [3919.68] Stephen: you've got access to these technologies that let you punch above your weight, being a small man. [3924.08] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: The hobby, yeah, I think the performance that we get in the hobby punches way above [3929.28] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: its weight. And if you put, if you put like a high end design company onto designing a freestyle [3935.2] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: mini quad, I'm skeptical about whether or not they'd come up with anything better than what we've [3939.68] Stephen: got now. You might find something looking a bit flashy, but not necessarily performing much better [3944.48] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: or being much more usable than what we have. I'd bet you anything, they would look flashier, [3950.32] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: and then it would be taken out into the bandos and stuff, and it would just get smashed. Yeah. [3955.76] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: You know, because they would try and make it look consumer, kind of look cool. Maybe you could do [3961.36] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: something with improve the aero, that's maybe something that an area that people could work [3965.68] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: with. But otherwise, you know, the durability of these frames now and what people do with them, [3970.96] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: it's just insane. And the performance they've got is impressive. You know, it always impresses [3976.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: everyone when you do a punch out, you know, whatever. So yeah, I mean, yeah, for the sake [3983.76] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: of two or 3% gains, it's just not worth it. Yeah, if there are the gains there, I mean, I'm not even [3991.6] Stephen: convinced that you probably end up in a world where you need to buy a new set of [3995.12] Stephen: screwdrivers because they use some special bit that didn't work with anyone else's screws. [3999.68] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Maybe molded carbon. That's something that you could maybe do. And someone tried to do that in [4004.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: South Korea or Japan, they were doing molded carbon frames, [4010.32] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: raised frames. Do you remember them? They were like a sort of bubble. Yeah. [4013.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: With light. There was a few of them. I know Formula One uses, Formula One uses, obviously, [4019.6] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: has quite a lot of carbon fiber technology, and they're wrapping it. And you could maybe do [4024.08] Jack: something with more than carbon frames and fossil stuff made out of milk cartons. [4031.84] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: That's a classic. Yeah. That was a massive frame of fossil gravity. Do you remember that? [4038.56] Jack: Yeah, man. Martin rise of massive help to the show in our early days helped us get established. [4045.84] Jack: Yeah. Some other people. There's the night show. Greg from Venice. I drone. Yeah. All those old [4054.32] Jack: names. First person view, Radio C. Dominic Clifton asked Superfly, what's your favorite [4062.08] Jack: flight controller and why? Quickly. And then we've got a question. Loaded question. [4067.44] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's the best. So the SP racing board. SPF3. Yeah. I mean, I've flown one of, I had a [4080.64] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Lightning, which I think he had a hand in designing. I like the look. I like the [4085.04] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: SP racing flight controllers. He's a good designer. There's a lot of Fox Air on your shop. [4092.16] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Just that. There is. I currently am stocking the Fox Air. I really like, I think Fox Air [4097.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: do a great job. I mean, we've just spent, I mean, in the B2Flight group, we've spent about a year [4104.24] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: talking to brands and trying different stuff and trying to be able to give a steer basically to [4110.8] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: people because of the difficulties with the gyro and the chip shortages and stuff. The QC on the [4115.52] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: flight controllers went downhill. Fox Air, I used to be a big fan of Teamota. I think maybe I've [4126.64] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: heard some feedbacks not so great recently. Acon is one of my favorite brands as well. [4137.84] Jack: Box goggles. Was that? In NACE32 to go along with your box goggles. [4146.0] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yeah, that is. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you can take the piss out my box goggles if you like, [4150.72] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: but you know. I like the box goggles. They get a great view. I got a big ass view. That's [4155.6] Jack: beautiful. Yeah. Do you know what you should do, which I hope that you consider is, you know, [4161.36] Jack: you get the DJI screen that you plug into the goggles. You could be a complete baller at FPV [4168.56] Jack: Drone Fest and have like the screen output and use that and just have your goggles on the side. [4177.52] Stephen: And have like a giant polystyrene headset with a little. [4181.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: If I was really to go old school, I could get the Quantum V2. Do you remember that? [4185.92] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: Yes. Yeah. That was my first little goggles and I could put a DJI screen into that. Maybe that [4191.12] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: would be pretty. That is that is the probably the least cool looking goggle that you can get. [4200.32] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: It's because it had this neoprene sock that you basically wrap around your whole face. [4206.64] Jack: So it looked like a horse feeder. Wonderful. Hey man, that's how so many people got into the hobby. [4214.08] Stephen: KK2, 1.0. You wouldn't want to lose any of that precious sweat on a hot day, would you? You've [4218.96] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: got to keep it in. Yeah, exactly. And you've got to keep a very kind of streetwise, you know, [4228.56] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: I've got to uphold the reputation of the brand by making sure that I look by wearing a neoprene [4234.08] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: head sock. Well, there was an urban camo version of that, which was cool. That was cool. Yeah, [4242.88] Jack: they'd done that with the Dominator HD2s, didn't they? They had the urban camouflage and everything. [4253.02] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: A live cat. Well, you know, it's like it's very, it's very warlike hobby. Well, actually, [4259.9] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: on the subject of being a warlike, it is in FPV drone fest is in a war zone. It's like a sort of, [4269.02] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: what's it called? Airsoft. And it's, yeah. Well, you guys have had the big pitch anyway, [4276.14] Stephen: you had it last week. Yeah. No rampant airsoft people running around so that there'll be no [4282.7] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: soft targets to worry about. No, well, we could get some of the drone fest people to run around [4289.5] Stephen: and that'd be fun. There will be competitions. I don't know quite how dangerous the competitions [4295.74] Stephen: will be. We'll have to wait and see. There's definitely going to be some... You've got to [4299.82] Stephen "Supafly" Wright: queue up to fly. Yeah, I requested that I have a Chesterfield to sit on the end of the, [4307.33] Stephen: so I can just fly constantly being a sponsor. So I just sit there and just fly. People bring [4313.57] Stephen: you cigars and brandy and you just sit there. Exactly. Unfortunately, that is all we've got [4320.45] Jack: time for. We might do a bonus podcast depending on how the other guys feel about that. It would [4327.09] Jack: be nice because we haven't done one in a while. The show Let Drone Out is sponsored and supported [4334.93] Jack: by our lovely Patreons. These guys are the ones that allow the audio podcast part of this video [4345.33] Jack: that's available on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, Spotify. To be cleaned up and made nice. So if [4355.89] Jack: you're listening to this, don't forget we're live. Let's run out on YouTube at 8 till 9 pm on a [4363.65] Jack: Thursday. So come by, say hi in the chat. Let us know that you're from the land of audio only. [4370.85] Jack: It means that you can come see all our faces and see the random slides that we hold up and [4377.57] Jack: different quads. Thank you, Cole. Thank you, Curry, for presenting wonderful retro things to us. [4385.81] Jack: Steven, thank you for getting our lovely guest on. Superfly Steven, [4392.53] Jack: it's been an absolute pleasure to have you on. You're always welcome on the show. [4397.73] Jack: Thanks for having me. Yeah, what a pleasure. And hopefully, maybe you could send us some links to [4404.69] Jack: post in the bottom of the chat for like tuning guides and stuff. And like any useful information. [4410.21] Stephen: I think people just want to go to superflyfpv.com, don't they? With an A? [4417.25] Koel: Yes. All links are in the video description immediately after this video. [4422.85] Stephen: Thank you for our awesome social media expert, Cole, for coming up with a nice [4427.09] Stephen: thumbnail and just making sure that that part of the show slides smoothly along. [4432.29] Jack: Yep. So yeah, hopefully we can show some logs to Superfly, maybe in a bonus pod, who knows. [4442.93] Jack: You've been joined by our host, Steven. Thanks, everyone. [4448.61] Jack: I'll be right until I fly. Everyone's favorite Curry kitten. Goodbye, our buddy Cole. See ya. [4459.41] Jack: And the waterfall of Superfly. Thank you. Good night. Bye.
