[74.26] Stephen: So guys, we heard from you. We're eager to hear more about the Scottish FPV scene. I understand you've got some great racing up there.
[83.26] Stephen: But you just want to kind of just jump in there and start telling us about it.
[88.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah. So as it turned out a couple of years ago, after Covid and everything, we were in fact, even pre Covid 2019, we were running a racing season up in Scotland.
[103.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Graham there, he was in charge of five FPV's first ever drone racing event.
[110.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": British qualifying event as well.
[113.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": British qualifying event as well. So it was a pretty good event. We had 30-40 pilots there and lots of people tuned into it as well.
[125.26] Graham "SpexFPV": This is over the season as well with 30-40 pilots. So 2019 was an amazing year for us.
[133.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Yeah, 2019 was huge.
[136.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Came along and burst all our plans for 2020.
[141.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I believe 2020 was going to be fairly similar to 2019 and everything there happened.
[150.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": The end of 2021, we had a sort of one-off race just in Scotland, a sort of like a fun fly race situation.
[160.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Which got...
[162.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Which I won, yes.
[165.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Which was awesome.
[168.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": It was a really good race.
[171.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": From there, we just sort of proceeded and kept running racing seasons really.
[178.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So yeah, we're now in our second season of Graham and I running the events in five and everything's going brilliantly.
[192.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": As well as the BDRA helping us as well.
[196.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So they're sort of getting us good direction of how to run races and stuff.
[201.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But we've also got quite a lot of freedom with our rules with racing.
[207.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So we've got one more drone for this season, which is in two weeks time.
[215.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Two weeks on a Saturday.
[219.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, that'll be the last season.
[221.26] Stephen: So you guys are representing the five area. Is it just the one club in five or do you have a bunch?
[225.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So five and Glasgow are the two sort of main clubs just now.
[231.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": A lot of the other ones, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, are quite quiet just now.
[238.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I believe there's still a bunch of guys in Edinburgh that are all into freestyling.
[244.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Most of our guys are meeting up and racing with the occasional out and doing some freestyle as well.
[251.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So yeah, it's a real good mix and we encourage basically any type of flying.
[260.26] Stephen: Do you have a few bandos, the regular spots where people meet up there as well?
[264.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, so we've got it was actually featured on voter riot.
[269.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": One of my videos made it on there.
[271.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it's an old mining tower made of concrete.
[276.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So there's like something like 15 by 15 feet square gaps to fly through.
[282.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it's awesome. Let me see if I can find the video.
[286.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So we've been there a few times flying.
[290.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And we've got sort of lots of spots for freestyling and stuff.
[296.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": We had a bando a couple of years ago as well.
[300.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But unfortunately that got flattened.
[305.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But yeah, we've got quite a lot of really cool places to fly.
[310.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So and the things a lot of people come up here for the North Coast 500.
[315.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And most people think, oh, go and fly the beaches and stuff.
[318.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But actually in your journey between the North Coast and the border of England,
[325.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": there's so many spots that you can hit that are really, really quite good.
[331.26] Stephen: Yeah, I'm kind of jealous of you guys.
[333.26] Stephen: Just some great scenery.
[334.26] Stephen: You've got really like dynamic, rocky terrain, great to fly over.
[338.26] Stephen: Loads of space.
[339.26] Graham "SpexFPV": So you can find out quite a bit somewhere as well.
[342.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Because of that, like you say, cliff faces, hills.
[347.26] Graham "SpexFPV": I've tend to fly a lot across water.
[351.26] Stephen: Strave one.
[352.26] Stephen: It's always the bravest move that forget concrete.
[354.26] Stephen: Water's tougher.
[355.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Never lost anything yet, thankfully.
[357.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Oh, yeah.
[358.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Lost a few times.
[362.26] Graham "SpexFPV": I don't know.
[363.26] Graham "SpexFPV": It's an adrenaline rush when you're over the water, stuff like that.
[367.26] Graham "SpexFPV": And of course, I love to fly along a local beach for,
[373.26] Graham "SpexFPV": inadvisably, long distances probably.
[378.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Always make it back.
[380.26] Stephen: I'm quite jealous of the other guys.
[382.26] Stephen: Jack's got a bit of space down Brighton Way as well.
[385.26] Stephen: Whereas here, you kind of go into the park and you can fly a little micro
[389.26] Stephen: until the dogs arrive or a bunch of kids run over
[392.26] Stephen: and sort of disappear into a little patch of woodland,
[395.26] Stephen: which sometimes is free, but sometimes, again, is full of dog walkers
[399.26] Stephen: or people just camped out having picnics.
[402.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So bringing on from that, we've got the exact same issue.
[408.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Basically, we're flying in local parks and setting up a track
[413.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": at one of the local high schools.
[416.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it is, you've got that, that people can walk across there
[420.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": at any time with dogs and stuff.
[422.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But ourselves and even Glasgow have been really lucky.
[426.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And we've amalgamated basically with the local flying club.
[431.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And certainly in Fife anyway, we've got our own sort of area
[435.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": that we can just set up a track, don't have any issues
[439.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": at our local flying club now.
[441.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So it's brilliant.
[443.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": We can store the stuff there.
[445.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": You have a permanent location.
[447.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yes, permanent location.
[449.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": We can't leave the stuff up, but the gates and things up,
[453.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": which would be an even handling.
[456.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But yeah, we've got, there's a big shed there, a lawnmower.
[461.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So yeah, it's awesome.
[463.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": It really is a perfect place.

[467.26] Stephen: So I'm guessing one of the reasons we got you on here,

[472.26] Stephen: But what we really want to do is tell people in Scotland
[475.26] Stephen: that you guys are out there.
[476.26] Stephen: And if they do want to get in touch,
[478.26] Stephen: you said you've worked a bit with the BDRA.
[480.26] Stephen: And how do they find the clubs?
[482.26] Stephen: How do they get started?
[484.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So primarily, we're on Facebook.
[486.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": We use Facebook as a sort of means of posting out events.
[492.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And we've got a Scottish FPV racing series.
[496.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": It's a Facebook page.
[500.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And we post all the event details in there
[503.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": at the sort of, I guess, national level in Scotland.
[508.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And then Fife and Glasgow both hold sort of Funfly weekends.
[514.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So most weekends, we set up a track,
[517.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": even lights through the week as well.
[520.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And like I've said, we encourage anybody to come along, really.

[529.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": and we can have a chat and build more to fix them.

[542.26] Stephen: How did the last season go, I was going to ask.
[544.26] Stephen: I heard your name mentioned quite a lot around the racing scene.
[547.26] Stephen: You seem to be doing pretty well.
[548.26] Stephen: What kind of highlights of the last season?
[550.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah.
[551.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So last year was my first year by starting running events.
[558.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So with the help of Graham, who's run a few himself,
[562.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": along with some other great people,
[566.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": we started last season, I think it was, was it three or four races, Graham?
[572.26] Graham "SpexFPV": I think it was just the three.
[574.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Three, wasn't it?
[575.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Yeah.
[576.26] Graham "SpexFPV": I kind of delayed him getting started because of controversy, shall we say.
[581.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah.
[582.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So yeah, we had three racing events last year.
[587.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it was a real...
[591.26] Graham "SpexFPV": You wanted to get your results and stay up there.
[596.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, that's it.
[597.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So I think it was based on the three events that we had.
[602.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And so the more events, the more points you got.
[605.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And the higher in the leaderboard you would be.
[608.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So I think I ended up winning the first one.
[611.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And then the second one was Floss' boss.
[616.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And so it was the last event was a real sort of who's going to win it.
[621.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": It was basically between us to be squash champion.
[624.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And Floss just snuck it in there at the last race with a really nice win.
[631.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So he done fantastic.
[632.26] Graham "SpexFPV": There was some amazing racing as well.
[635.26] Graham "SpexFPV": The B finals actually last year were particularly intense.
[639.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, that's it.
[640.26] Graham "SpexFPV": The skill level was super...
[642.26] Graham "SpexFPV": I mean, the final was always a spectacle to watch.
[645.26] Graham "SpexFPV": But the B final really was the one because it was fast enough guys
[650.26] Graham "SpexFPV": and they were all within a second of each other.
[653.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Tight level.
[654.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Yeah.
[655.26] Graham "SpexFPV": And it was the final.
[656.26] Graham "SpexFPV": It was really close.
[658.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah.
[659.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Like Graham says, the actual week table as it was last year was so close.
[665.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And even into this year now as well, I've been winning back to back events.
[672.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I've won all four this year.
[674.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And there's so much competition, which is much better year by year
[680.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": that we're gaining competition and gaining pilots before
[684.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": and we're gaining some new pilots.
[686.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": That's fantastic.
[688.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": It doesn't matter if you're at the top or the bottom.
[690.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": There's still competition right the way through.
[692.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And yeah, it's slowly but surely growing back in Scotland.
[698.26] Graham "SpexFPV": I think it was rewarding as well because some of the experienced guys
[701.26] Graham "SpexFPV": that have been coming since last season,
[704.26] Graham "SpexFPV": basically through the three races last season,
[707.26] Graham "SpexFPV": have come back this year.
[708.26] Graham "SpexFPV": And it's great to see how much they've improved
[710.26] Graham "SpexFPV": and started to build quads more suited to the purpose
[716.26] Graham "SpexFPV": and things like that.
[717.26] Stephen: So were you able to come up with like a bind and fly generic freestyle
[721.26] Stephen: and then they'd start building race quads?
[723.26] Stephen: Is that the kind of progression you see?
[724.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Yeah.
[725.26] Graham "SpexFPV": For example, Floss, what did he win with last year?
[728.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Last year was a TBS source one he was racing with.
[732.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So he was beating me with something like an ultra,
[736.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": an ultra like 500 gram racing drone success.
[740.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So I was racing this and he was beating me with, you know,
[744.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": 6,700 gram TBS source one.
[749.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah.
[750.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": There's no justice.
[752.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, that's it.
[753.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And yeah, the last couple of years as well.
[756.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So last year, there was a group of three of us,
[760.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": myself, Derek FPV and 911 FPV.
[764.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": We decided to head down to Hull for their British qualifying event last year.
[770.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it was a UI opener.
[772.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, yeah.
[773.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": It is.
[774.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah.
[775.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": We traveled over the border.
[776.26] Jack: Hull.
[777.26] Jack: Yeah, I know.
[778.26] Jack: Didn't we build a Hadrian's World?
[779.26] Stephen: It's not bad as well as it could be these days.
[784.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I know.
[785.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah.
[786.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So how did you do?
[787.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So how did you do?
[788.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Last year, yeah, not too good.
[791.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I think was it maybe the C or the D final or something?
[795.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So going from like an A final to a C or a D was,
[801.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I wouldn't say it was difficult or, you know, it was, it wasn't difficult.
[806.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, I expected to do better.
[808.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But I think that was just coming off of the, you know, how my racing had been.
[813.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it was a, it was a real eye opener.
[816.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it just encouraged me to practice even more.
[820.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And then that whole summer was just a case of just going insane with flying.
[828.26] Stephen: What did you take away from that?
[829.26] Stephen: Because suddenly you're seeing a whole load of other pilots you've never seen before.
[833.26] Stephen: They're pulling tricks out of the bag that you haven't seen.
[835.26] Stephen: What sort of things you've taken away?
[837.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Well, the quality is so high down there as well.
[840.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": The quality in England and Wales is, it's very strange that there isn't,
[846.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": you know, through the years there isn't the same quality and speed in Scotland.
[853.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But I think it's definitely growing there now, not just myself,
[856.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": but a lot of the other guys.
[859.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it was great to be racing with these names, you know, Sol, FPV.
[865.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I can't think off the top of my head.
[867.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Some others, Blakey, or some of the, you know, really fast pilots in the UK.
[873.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So it was great to be racing with them and chat to them
[877.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": and be around sort of the rest of the drone racing crowd.
[882.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Witness another level.
[885.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, absolutely.
[887.26] Stephen: Yeah, probably more so if you like go over to America
[890.26] Stephen: and see the people who are, you know, putting in hundreds of packs or Korea, you know.
[893.26] Stephen: Yeah.
[894.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, that's it.
[895.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": It's really awesome to see.
[897.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And even this year, so we went back down the hole this year.
[901.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I was very last minute in signing up, but I went down and I think on my last heat of the day,
[910.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": so the last qualifying round of the day, I'd placed me in second for qualifying.
[916.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So I was in the final.
[918.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And I was thinking, my goodness, how have I just pulled that out of the bag?
[922.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Because there was guys there last year that were beating me.
[925.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And I'm thinking, oh man, like this is awesome.
[929.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And then I looked at the timings and I think Sol was something like,
[935.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": something like 30 seconds faster than me over three races or something, or so many races.
[943.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And I was just thinking, wow, that's that boots things into perspective.
[948.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": How there's another level there in racing that I think, oh, wow, I'm getting really fast.
[955.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But the same thing, a lot of other people are getting a lot faster as well.
[960.26] Graham "SpexFPV": Brought down the reality.
[964.26] Stephen: Where if they find the seconds though?
[966.26] Stephen: Because I don't race at all.
[968.26] Stephen: And I think as soon as they see someone race, I'm like, wow, that's really fast.
[971.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Then you see the pros and you're like, I think it really is just about keeping things smooth, I find.
[982.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And a lot of people have started saying to me that I'm thinking, why am I killing packs, for example?
[988.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And the other day when we were at the racing last Saturday, I realized now why I'm killing packs is because I was touching the top of the throttle.
[997.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And that was a success quad with a throttle cap.
[1000.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But I'm thinking, my goodness, this isn't saying that I'm touching the top of the throttle now.
[1006.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And the one that there is now a throttle cap for me to go faster.
[1012.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": But I think it is all about being smooth and consistent as well in your flying.
[1019.26] Graham "SpexFPV": It's like myself, I'm the B mains terror usually.
[1023.26] Graham "SpexFPV": When I don't have bad luck, I tend to terrorize the B mains because I'm not the fastest, but I am very consistent.
[1035.26] Graham "SpexFPV": I don't tend to drop it much as Carl will tell you.
[1039.26] Graham "SpexFPV": I've always taken the mic out, the guys don't crash because I'll be right there.
[1044.26] Stephen: Speaking of hitting the top of the throttle, do you use Limon's CAC mode to record how much time you spend at 100% throttle?
[1052.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I've just recently started watching him and he's absolutely hilarious.
[1057.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": It really is.
[1059.26] Stephen: He's got a little mod that records how much time you spend at 100% throttle and it saves it onto the flight controller.
[1065.26] Stephen: So flight after flight, it keeps a clock of how many seconds you're at the top throttle.
[1069.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I wonder if that works with it because like I said, I'm running an 85% throttle cap on 6S.
[1076.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And interestingly, a lot of people are like, my goodness, what are you doing?
[1081.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So I run 1750 kV motors on a racing drone.
[1085.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Now, you know, all the racers are 1950 and upwards.
[1090.26] Stephen: So the MCK ones are like 2000 and something, 2050 or something crazy, aren't they?
[1096.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So I'm running 1750 kV motors and for all of this season, apart from the last race, I was running 5S batteries.
[1106.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And for some reason it was clicking with me.
[1110.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Honestly, I would advise anybody that's struggled with 6S because I raced 6S in 2019.
[1117.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And for a long time.
[1120.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And I was loving it, but I changed props and stuff.
[1124.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And I was really struggling to keep it sort of dialed in in some of the tracks.
[1131.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And I got a bunch of 5S mini-star China hobby line batteries for really cheap.
[1138.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And I was like, this is awesome.
[1142.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": I'm winning races with a 5S pack.
[1144.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So this 6S was the next level to go back there and try it out.
[1150.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": And it's definitely starting to squeeze out a little bit more power now as the races go on.
[1156.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": OK.
[1157.26] Jack: Have you tried flatter bladed props?
[1161.26] Jack: Does that might help as well?
[1163.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, I think that definitely could help.
[1165.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So I'm running the heads up 5138s there.
[1172.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": Yeah, these ones, the 5138s.
[1176.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": So they're quite an aggressive pitch for 6S.
[1180.26] Callum "Hairy Haggis": A lot of the higher sort of KV guys are running sort of like 5127s and stuff.

[3470.29] Stephen: all bundled into one chip, right?
[3472.29] Stephen: And those STM32 chips started shooting up in price
[3475.29] Stephen: over lockdown because they stopped making some
[3477.29] Stephen: of the crappy old ones.
[3478.29] Stephen: And everyone had to use a faster one,
[3480.29] Stephen: which meant that all the people using crappy old ones
[3482.29] Stephen: are suddenly buying newer ones.
[3484.29] Stephen: And the demand for those just went up.
[3486.29] Stephen: And so flight controllers that using them suddenly
[3488.29] Stephen: got way more expensive, like double in price.
[3491.29] Stephen: And what happened was that people started looking outside
[3494.29] Stephen: of the STM32 portfolio and saying,
[3497.29] Stephen: we don't need ST micro electronics per se.
[3500.29] Stephen: They're just easy to work with.
[3501.29] Stephen: But what would be a cost efficient replacement?
[3504.29] Stephen: And the artery tech AT32 series, the F435,
[3509.29] Stephen: is a cost effective replacement, right?
[3511.29] Stephen: This boy is like an F4, but running at 288 megahertz,
[3516.29] Stephen: whereas the F405 is a 168 megahertz.
[3519.29] Stephen: So it takes like an F405, runs it on a more efficient process,
[3523.29] Stephen: which allows them to run higher clocks.
[3525.29] Stephen: And that is basically equivalent to an F7 at about 195 megahertz.
[3531.29] Stephen: So it's a little smaller than an F722.
[3534.29] Graham "SpexFPV": It literally falls just shy.
[3536.29] Stephen: Yeah, just a little shy of an F722.
[3539.29] Stephen: But it's got a mega flash, so you can run all the features
[3542.29] Stephen: you want as well.
[3544.29] Stephen: Yeah, it's a great little chip.
[3545.29] Stephen: And for 20 quid, I mean, it's just fantastic

[3605.29] Stephen: It's just you have two options to run D-shot.

[3610.29] Stephen: But that's been the same way for like old F-411 boards
