[0.0] Jack: Hello, and you're listening to Let's Drone Out, a special thank you to our lovely patrons
[6.28] Jack: that help donate so that we can pay the editor to remove the swear words and silly things
[11.36] Jack: we say.
[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to…
[14.4] Jack: Carlos Campos!
[16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner!
[17.84] Frank: Sam Dahmer.
[19.68] Frank: On with the show.
[20.68] ChrisG: Now on the TV cover.
[21.68] ChrisG: Let's drone out now.
[52.16] Jack: Hello, and welcome back to Let's Drone Out.
[56.0] Jack: Tonight, you're joined by the Balm of Them staff, Stephen, in a new location.
[60.24] Stephen: Hello, everyone.
[61.24] Stephen: Doing a bit of house sitting this week, so remote broadcast.
[64.6] Jack: So if you want to rob his other house, feel free.
[67.84] Jack: He's not there.
[69.84] Jack: Maybe someone is, who knows.
[72.84] Jack: Everyone's favourite coke in.
[75.84] Curry: Hello, I'm in the normal place, but Jack has just complained that the background isn't
[79.64] Curry: the same and he misses it.
[81.72] Jack: It upsets me.
[83.92] Curry: I had to… this is how bad it got.
[86.08] Curry: Just to fit that shelf on, I'd take the wings off the Bixler.
[89.36] Jack: Oh, no.
[90.36] Jack: The wings are over there.
[92.36] Jack: It's destroying everything.
[94.16] Curry: It's taking everything away, but look, Star Wars fans, the Star Wars Millennium Falcon
[100.28] Curry: now has pride of place on the shelf.
[102.36] Jack: And I'm bright until I fly, and I'm so sorry if you can hear the washing machine.
[107.16] Jack: Stephen, I hear that you're out and flying, you know, the good thing.
[111.76] Stephen: I've got near the Welsh borders here, near Abercabenny, done a bit of flying, got out
[116.72] Stephen: around the garden, messing around with the O3 system at last, and kind of enjoying that.
[122.56] Stephen: Yeah.
[123.56] Stephen: It's pretty cool.
[125.12] Jack: The quality is nice.
[126.12] Jack: Are you still having to keep them separate as well?
[129.96] Jack: Like, you know, are you still keeping your V1 goggles for the other stuff?
[133.64] Jack: So you don't have to rewind and all that.
[135.56] Stephen: Yeah, I've just been using a set of V2 goggles that I got purely for this to kind of experiment.
[142.52] Stephen: The range is nice.
[143.52] Stephen: I have kind of pushed it to the point where it was threatening to get out on me because
[147.32] Stephen: that's what you do the first time you get one of these systems.
[151.96] Stephen: It definitely does better than the V1 stuff, the VISTA and so forth.
[158.0] Stephen: The camera footage is pretty good.
[160.24] Stephen: It's difficult to kind of get that white balance to stay consistent.
[166.12] Stephen: That's the thing that gets me.
[167.76] Stephen: And the image is quite soft, which is difficult to fly with.
[171.68] Stephen: You will often admire the beautiful, impressive cinema vibe you're getting off all that lush
[178.48] Stephen: greenery without realizing that you're about to kind of hit a few leaves because you don't
[183.84] Stephen: have a lot of the sharpening that you get with other systems.
[187.36] Stephen: Flown it back to back with a walk snail, had a bit of a fly away with a walk snail, had
[191.4] Stephen: to go getting garden implements and jointing things out of bushes.
[197.48] Stephen: So I've been building again.
[204.18] Stephen: So I've built a little doodle here, solo me there.
[210.02] Stephen: So I've got this Quad 66 design, which is a three inch, very lightweight frame.
[218.02] Stephen: You can see it's got quite thin arms, but I've got a four mil thick version of this.
[224.06] Stephen: And instead of buying the exact motors, which were like, he wanted 1104s or 1204s, I think.
[232.18] Stephen: Well, I had some sunny sky R1106 and they're a bit punchy.
[239.9] Stephen: And yeah, I've got this with the Skystars all in one and the walk snail one S board.
[246.46] Jack: And back when those motors came out, they were on the limits of what ESEs could do.
[258.38] Stephen: I set fire.
[259.38] Stephen: The last time I had these in a quad, the quad caught fire.
[265.02] Stephen: That's what happened last time.
[266.14] Stephen: So it was always going to be interesting, but you know, I think Skystars are doing a
[271.02] Stephen: good job here and it did not catch fire.
[274.78] Stephen: It coped pretty well.
[276.14] Stephen: Even though the frame was so light, it kind of did a bit of a fly away and tried to make
[281.18] Stephen: it off to the moon.
[283.1] Stephen: So I figured out eventually I just needed way less D term and I got it to behave itself
[288.7] Stephen: and flows really nicely.
[292.81] Curry: So was this literally it was just trying to write itself and had a bit of a wobble and
[297.73] Curry: just kept increasing the throttle in the classic situation.
[300.37] Stephen: And yeah, like some kind of video game noise, it's just gone and you're like disarmed, disarmed,
[309.25] Stephen: disarmed.
[310.25] Stephen: But by that point, it's already kind of, you know, five, six meters in the air.
[313.81] Stephen: Right.
[314.81] Stephen: Little runaway.
[315.81] Stephen: So I had to put the D term down to like 0.6.
[319.13] Stephen: So 60% of the normal D term value and then it was happy and it still had like no issues
[324.81] Stephen: with prop wash.
[325.81] Stephen: It's still going like a rocket.
[327.13] Stephen: So yeah, it's fine.
[332.49] Curry: So you said you compared the O3 to the walks now because you're saying you were liking
[336.01] Curry: the walks now.
[337.01] Curry: How how do the two compare?
[338.69] Stephen: Well, O3 is it's definitely a cinematographers product, right?
[343.41] Stephen: The camera, you look at the shades of green and they're very true to life.
[348.49] Stephen: Whereas walk snail.
[349.49] Stephen: Yeah, walk snails a bit more like imagine the shades of green that used in Sonic the
[355.49] Stephen: hedgehog.
[357.05] Stephen: That's kind of what you're seeing with walk snail.
[359.09] Stephen: Everything is a bright emerald jade and vivid maxed out.
[363.65] Stephen: You have to kind of turn the color down to like three out of 10 to get anything that
[367.21] Stephen: looks resemble looks like normal foliage.
[369.65] Stephen: But you get that situation where you're flying in the sun and you've got some trees you want
[376.25] Stephen: to fly under.
[377.49] Stephen: You can see the shadows under the trees and kind of see what's going on there at the same
[382.77] Stephen: time as seeing the bright sun.
[385.33] Stephen: Because with DJI, it's like, oh, it's a beautiful kind of cinema landscape.
[390.17] Stephen: And I recorded whatever is synod D or whatever it is, the special kind of high white color
[396.49] Stephen: range and it the footage looks fantastic, but quite difficult to see into shadows.
[401.45] Stephen: So that's quite difficult to fly into the shadows.
[404.11] Stephen: When you're in the shadows, you auto white balance kicks in, but you've got that moment
[409.17] Stephen: where you've got to go into the pitch black for a half second before it kicks in and lets
[414.57] Stephen: you know what's going on.
[415.57] Stephen: Whereas I think walks now is a bit better at giving you a bit of a heads up and it starts
[419.57] Stephen: to pull up those darks and render them as normal colors a little bit earlier, which
[423.89] Stephen: might be artificial, but makes it much easier to fly.
[429.49] Jack: Old school CMOS squeaky bum time for anyone who's been for very long in this game.
[437.85] Jack: The old CMOS cameras were terrible, especially the fat shark ones.
[443.13] Jack: You just fly in underneath a sort of canopy and then just be like, I just hope I don't
[449.81] Jack: hear anything.
[450.81] Curry: Or you dare to fly near sunset when the sun was low in the sky and all you had was darkness
[457.77] Curry: like a blank void below you saying, I wonder what's down there?
[461.41] Curry: Don't know.
[462.41] Curry: Flying around.
[463.41] Curry: See what happens.
[464.41] Stephen: But yeah, the DJI stuff was good.
[467.37] Stephen: And I've been experimenting a lot more with gyro flow and contrary to Curry's kind of
[471.69] Stephen: doom laden predictions on gyro flow, trying it with all the Chinese cameras, it works
[478.37] Stephen: really well with O3.
[481.77] Stephen: It actually told me not to do auto sync points that like gave me a slap on the wrist and
[486.13] Stephen: said, no, the footage is already automatically synced.
[488.77] Stephen: You don't need to calculate sync points.
[490.29] Stephen: And I was like, OK, if you say so.
[495.69] Stephen: And I pressed go and I was rewarded with a like buttery smooth rendition, which I showed
[500.93] Stephen: last week.
[501.93] Stephen: And everything was great when I was at home and I had my Nvidia card, but a 2080 Ti, which
[508.05] Stephen: is like five years old now, but it's a proper desktop card and it could do that at 70 odd
[513.21] Stephen: frames a second.
[514.21] Stephen: Whereas out here on a laptop, I've got a relatively new laptop and it says, oh, Intel graphics
[520.05] Stephen: work with gyro flow.
[521.05] Stephen: And I was like, OK, great.
[522.45] Stephen: Awesome.
[523.45] Stephen: I'm probably going to get like 20 frames a second, maybe no, no, 1.8 to two frames a second.
[530.75] Stephen: It peaked at two and a half.
[532.03] Stephen: I think when I stopped doing anything else, it's eight hours to render about five minutes
[538.11] Stephen: of video.
[539.11] Stephen: It's not what you want.
[540.11] Stephen: Not at all.
[541.11] Jack: Oh, God.
[542.11] Jack: Sit and forget like I'm pray that you fly one pack and you have to let it render overnight.
[550.43] Stephen: Yeah.
[551.43] Stephen: Sometimes that's bad, but it's getting good.
[556.35] Jack: I was well impressed with the O3.
[559.75] Jack: I mean, admittedly, I got to look through like the new goggles, you know, with like
[566.03] Jack: individual like doctors and stuff and like it did it did mess with my motion sickness
[573.11] Jack: on like how good it was flying HD.
[577.67] Curry: I was.
[578.67] Curry: You got some sickness because it was like more true to life almost.
[583.71] Jack: Yeah.
[584.71] Jack: Yeah.
[585.71] Jack: You know, just they say I don't know how true it is, but they say like motion sickness
[590.07] Jack: is a conflict between your eyes and your ears and brain saying, you know, like, are you
[597.03] Jack: moving or aren't you?
[598.99] Curry: What I have seen from other people's footage of the O3 is there is a bit of warping in
[607.95] Curry: how it revolves around and stuff.
[609.83] Curry: And I don't know if maybe that can set off a couple of people more than other cameras.
[614.19] Stephen: A bit of lens distortion, you're right.
[616.31] Stephen: I think you can clear it up in the recorded footage, but in the FPV, it is a little bit
[620.31] Stephen: annoying.
[621.35] Stephen: You get that sort of you turn past something and suddenly it like really slows down because
[625.51] Stephen: it's stretched out horizontally in the corners of the screen.
[631.87] Curry: I mean, that's the price to pay for ultra wide angle, I suppose, but you can have, I
[636.39] Curry: mean, very expensive lenses, get rid of that distortion to a certain amount and very cheap
[640.51] Curry: ones are really, really bad.
[642.15] Stephen: The one thing I didn't realize I'd miss until I tried to use it was the ability to put my
[647.27] Stephen: own fonts because for a while on the WTF OS and on Walk Snail and more recently HD zero
[655.87] Stephen: as well.
[656.87] Stephen: I've been able to put the font packs on and you can have the same look and feel and you
[661.47] Stephen: can put in a font that's got like a colored battery indicator.
[664.79] Stephen: So when it's full, it's green and it's halfway down, it goes orange and when it's near empty,
[668.67] Stephen: it goes red.
[670.59] Stephen: And DJI being DJI, they don't want any truck with anyone else doing their user interface.
[675.27] Stephen: So they just give you like block capitals and it's kind of, it doesn't look great.
[682.15] Stephen: The style of the OSD text and everything looks a little bit off.
[687.35] Stephen: It's not, I don't know, it's like they've done the, as DJI do, they did the minimum
[693.19] Stephen: they could to check the box and it's just kind of a bit, it's where the premium feel
[697.99] Stephen: I think could be accentuated by allowing people to put OSD fonts on themselves rather than
[705.51] Stephen: just have really basic looking fonts.
[707.83] Curry: So why aren't these ones WTF OS like your other ones?
[712.35] Curry: Is that a restriction on the O3 or something?
[714.19] Stephen: I'm flying 16 by nine.
[716.15] Stephen: I have no truck with four by three, I'm afraid.
[718.23] Stephen: I'm going to record 16 by nine.
[720.19] Stephen: So I'm going to record, I'm going to fly it.
[721.95] Stephen: So that's my outlook.
[724.23] Stephen: Yeah, no hack yet.
[726.19] Stephen: And if there is one, they don't want to burn it until they're certain that DJI aren't going
[730.31] Stephen: to bother to fix it because that's pretty much what happened with the original goggles.
[734.31] Stephen: It got to a stage of firmware maturity where it was clear that there were no more tricks
[738.35] Stephen: to be pulled out of the bag and then they could go in and crack it without worrying
[743.19] Stephen: about DJI withholding one important feature that would force people to upgrade to a version
[749.55] Stephen: that they then wouldn't be able to crack.
[752.63] Stephen: So I think that's kind of where they are, crack wise.
[758.39] Stephen: It'll probably happen, but I don't know if I'm going to buy many of these, they're very
[762.63] Stephen: expensive units and they're very, very, very big and very, very heavy.
[767.99] Stephen: I put it in a three and a half inch and without decasing that thing, I don't think it's ever
[772.39] Stephen: going to be sub 250, it's just a chunker.
[776.67] Stephen: And even if you take the casing off, you go down from something like 26 grams to like
[782.75] Stephen: just under 20.
[785.07] Stephen: Even with all the metal casing off, it's still like a 20 gram VTX basically.
[790.23] Stephen: And you can strip it right down, but then you lose things like the SD card slot.
[795.11] Stephen: And if you lose the SD card slot, then when you try and copy stuff off the internal memory,
[801.31] Stephen: you need a fan on it because there's nowhere for the heat to go.
[804.79] Stephen: So it just becomes this problem to actually use it to record anything at that point.
[812.17] Jack: Yeah, I'll see.
[814.13] Jack: It was an interesting experiment.
[816.13] Jack: Yeah, tailspin.
[817.13] Jack: I wasn't really sure what I was flying in, you know, what mode 4x3 or whatnot, or my
[824.45] Jack: normal analog stuff, yeah, it's all 4x3.
[830.37] Jack: Are your goggles 4x3?
[833.13] Jack: Yeah, yeah.
[835.13] Jack: I think so.
[836.13] Jack: Yeah, they're HD V3 cores.
[841.13] Stephen: I think so.
[842.13] Stephen: I think the Fatchucks are all 4x3.
[846.18] Curry: Yeah.
[847.18] Jack: I did have the...
[848.18] Curry: The very old Dominator V3s, which are 16x9s.
[852.26] Jack: Yeah, I put up with those for a bit, but then after a while I really did hate them because
[861.42] Jack: there's just not enough real estate up and down.
[867.58] Jack: Yeah, it was a little bit dicey.
[869.1] Jack: I found a really quite difficult fly through.
[871.82] Stephen: I was trying to kind of get the nose down a bit and that was a bit dicey.
[875.9] Stephen: It's the one...
[876.9] Stephen: I haven't had a problem with the previous DJI system, but this one, I don't know if it's
[880.86] Stephen: more zoomed in or something, but yeah, I didn't feel I could get that much speed on it.
[886.14] Stephen: I was flying very cautiously today.
[893.04] Jack: How the stock of like the V1 stuff and like the Cadex air units, because obviously Cadex
[898.76] Jack: aren't making them anymore, like has RunCAM fully taken over?
[904.08] Stephen: I think there's a Cadex version of that big square silver DJI camera that they're doing.
[910.52] Stephen: As far as I know, there's still air units coming out from RunCAM.
[915.12] Stephen: They're still out in the stores and there's going to be a big secondhand market, I'm sure,
[920.8] Stephen: because they're pretty hard to actually kill, so there'll be a lot of people that upgrade
[924.04] Stephen: to another system and they find their way onto the market.
[929.24] Jack: I know.
[930.24] Jack: I did see an old numbskull in the chat, he I believe sent some in to Revere.
[938.48] Curry: This is always the only worry with DJI, isn't it?
[940.96] Curry: It's like they're very much out to suit themselves in what they do, rather than giving us a real
[948.36] Curry: sort of roadmap about what's going on and what they're going to bring in and how they're
[952.28] Curry: going to help you.
[953.28] Curry: It's like it's just we do what we like, thanks, we'll buy it.
[957.8] Jack: We'll cut you off if you do something we don't like.
[961.24] Stephen: That's the benefit of being basically a monopoly.
[965.24] Stephen: That's why we see legislation coming from America trying to ban DJI so they can give
[970.08] Stephen: their homegrown alternatives a shot at actually selling something, which they can't really
[974.4] Stephen: do with DJI's in the marketplace.
[976.44] Stephen: If you're going to buy a consumer drone, it's not really a decision, is it?
[979.72] Stephen: You're going to buy a floating camera platform unless you're going for something extremely
[983.52] Stephen: high end and professional.
[985.12] Stephen: It's going to be DJI.
[986.12] Curry: I was just going to say, wasn't there an actual new DJI released this week?
[989.84] Curry: Was it the Air 3 or something?
[990.84] Curry: Air 4.
[991.84] Stephen: Wasn't it?
[992.84] Jack: Yeah.
[993.84] Stephen: Was it 4?
[994.84] Jack: There were a bunch of videos that didn't actually watch this.
[997.04] Stephen: I know they said it was going to be the system that might make it into the O4.
[1000.72] Stephen: Maybe I'm confusing that, probably.
[1002.8] Jack: Yeah.
[1003.8] Curry: It's OcuSync 4, isn't it?
[1006.08] Curry: What's happened?
[1007.08] Curry: If I'd have been more on a case, I'd have been checking out if there were any crashes
[1009.76] Curry: yet so we could bring new DJI drone releases.
[1012.88] Curry: Let's look at the crashes because somebody that manages to fly into the post or water
[1017.04] Curry: or something, despite all the technology to make you not do that, they somehow manage
[1022.6] Curry: you.
[1023.6] Stephen: I guess the likes of Mad Tech would know everything about that, but I haven't seen a ton of coverage.
[1028.44] Stephen: From where I'm standing, it looks like we've got to that point in the maturity of the DJI
[1033.4] Stephen: equipment where it's not innovative, it's just iterative.
[1038.0] Stephen: It's a small spec bump, but not game-changing anymore.
[1042.28] Jack: I think they put this to the test.
[1045.16] Jack: Old Kai from Digital Rev TV used to be a bath.
[1051.88] Curry: My branch is a bit better than...
[1053.8] Jack: Yeah.
[1054.8] Jack: I mean, they are looking, I mean, the Mavic Pro is looking very beefy now.
[1062.72] Jack: And then the air is starting to get pretty slim, which is quite interesting.
[1070.6] Stephen: They're still very, very similar setup though, aren't they?
[1073.6] Stephen: There's no major changes in the layout of components, they're just slowly shrinking
[1078.92] Stephen: components from version to version.
[1081.08] Stephen: It looks like they've got the same motors on still as well.
[1086.1] Jack: Yeah.
[1087.1] Jack: It's good.
[1088.1] Jack: This is the only thing I've really seen on it.
[1090.06] Jack: I mean, this is the time when you kind of like miss, miss Cole, like, you know, as he
[1097.42] Jack: kind of really sort of like stayed up with that sort of stuff.
[1100.7] Jack: I didn't.
[1101.7] Jack: How's...
[1102.7] Jack: Curry, I watched your video of times are changing and you're...
[1108.26] Jack: Am I right in thinking you're moving away from like the quad sort of stuff?
[1113.54] Curry: No, not necessarily.
[1115.74] Curry: I was trying to move away from just doing reviews, in fact, trying to turn down reviews
[1123.78] Curry: because they take up time.
[1125.62] Curry: Whereas I wanted to do more interesting projects and in fact, like fly things again.
[1130.74] Curry: For example, like the walks now stuff that I put in that seven inch quad, I haven't had
[1134.86] Curry: time to install it, reinstall it and re-fly it and stuff.
[1141.26] Curry: So it was a case of trying not to do so many reviews, leave time to do more interesting
[1145.9] Curry: projects and actually go out and to, you know, fly the stuff and for some fun times, really,
[1151.94] Curry: which hasn't worked so well because as soon as I got back from holiday, I had a pile of
[1154.86] Curry: stuff on the floor that came through the door.
[1159.26] Curry: So there's the...
[1160.26] Curry: Hence there's like a weird drift car video yesterday, tomorrow there'll be a charge video
[1166.74] Curry: and then a couple of things to come next week.
[1172.14] Curry: If I can clear it all next week, then I can get on with the larger projects and actually
[1177.46] Curry: going ahead and installing things in planes I wanted and doing some fun stuff, which isn't
[1184.06] Curry: related to trying a, you know, say here's my affiliate link and that sort of thing.
[1188.46] Stephen: A review is kind of like a treadmill.
[1190.38] Stephen: It sounds like once you get going, you just get more and more of them and then you can't
[1195.26] Stephen: stop.
[1197.92] Curry: Yeah, to a point.
[1199.84] Curry: As I said in that video, one of the problems about if you want people to watch your videos
[1205.32] Curry: on YouTube, it's the YouTube algorithm, which nobody really knows how it works, but it seems
[1210.48] Curry: to rely on you producing regular content.
[1213.96] Curry: And if you're not producing regular content, they're like, this guy's done it.
[1216.6] Curry: So you're always sort of like, oh yeah, I can get this in and I can do a review on that
[1220.96] Curry: and churn this out.
[1222.76] Curry: And yeah, you do end up on a somewhat of a treadmill and getting more and more stuff
[1229.28] Curry: in.
[1230.28] Curry: So I've done reasonably well at turning down some stuff and then, you know, some stuff
[1236.36] Curry: I also got off and I was like, well, that's that's kind of interesting.
[1240.0] Curry: Well, I have to have a look at that.
[1242.32] Curry: Oh, Richard Warwick's trying to help me saying, Curry kitten has a secret radio master product,
[1248.08] Curry: apparently.
[1249.08] Curry: Yeah.
[1250.08] Curry: It might have.
[1251.08] Curry: There might be another radio from radio master, but that's kind of like saying, you know,
[1254.72] Curry: Ford also working on radio now, believe it, apparently, who could believe it?
[1264.4] Curry: I think the thirty first is the date for when you will see your YouTube feeds suddenly blow
[1273.44] Curry: up with lots of things from radio master potentially.
[1277.32] Curry: I can't remember.
[1278.32] Curry: I can't be ready by then because I haven't flown anything.
[1281.24] Stephen: Looking forward to seeing what that's about.
[1283.32] Stephen: It does seem that they're kind of honing in on a formula.
[1287.32] Stephen: They've gone big, they've gone small, it's like they're searching for the right size.
[1295.33] Curry: A radio master radio review is a little bit like there's a new DJI quad.
[1300.11] Curry: There's no big innovations.
[1301.73] Curry: It's kind of like we've we've had a different form factor idea in it.
[1306.69] Curry: You can still have E L R S and you don't need to talk about that more and it still
[1310.09] Curry: has Edge CX on there and it still has nice gimbals and things like that.
[1313.01] Curry: So it's all the same.
[1314.01] Curry: Apart from it might look slightly different.
[1316.21] Curry: Bright colors.
[1317.21] Stephen: They put a bunch of the websites with neon colors.
[1320.57] Stephen: I was almost tempted to go and spend ludicrous money on them, but I reigned that in.
[1325.13] Stephen: I didn't notice that they had a yellow one.
[1328.09] Stephen: Yeah, of course they had a yellow one.
[1330.37] Stephen: They know my weakness.
[1332.05] Curry: I might have something to do with orange.
[1335.33] Stephen: Interesting.
[1336.33] Stephen: Yeah, I think they were on Instagram a while ago, so that would be interesting to see.
[1344.25] Curry: Yeah.
[1345.25] Curry: Yeah, but yeah, it's still, no, I'm not really moving away from quads.
[1348.89] Curry: I mean, I want to do some other building projects that might not involve quads, but I also
[1354.05] Curry: want to do things like, can I take this old DJI 450 and Acro or what happens if I have
[1361.89] Curry: tried things from an old wooden tricopter?
[1363.97] Curry: What happens if I pull it upside down then?
[1365.65] Curry: Will that work?
[1366.65] Curry: Just stuff.
[1367.65] Curry: Just things to smash stuff.
[1368.65] Stephen: Why things more than one stuff?
[1370.61] Stephen: For no reason.
[1371.61] Stephen: Because it kind of sucks if you're told to review something and you're like, oh yeah,
[1374.81] Stephen: now I will fly three packs on this and here it is and put it on the shelf.
[1379.93] Stephen: That's just, it's not fun.
[1381.93] Stephen: I found it a little bit exhausting to have it to validate hardware because I'm doing
[1385.65] Stephen: a bit of, you know, does this board target work and things and, you know, solder things
[1390.89] Stephen: up, de-solder them, solder something else up, de-solder them, solder things and it's
[1395.41] Stephen: like, can I just go and fly something without, you know, just soldering things up for one
[1401.85] Stephen: or two packs of testing?
[1403.17] Stephen: It would just be really nice just to go fly, kind of like, yeah, I will help with that,
[1408.53] Stephen: but you know, I'm just going to keep it to an amount that's not going to stop the rest
[1412.37] Stephen: of it being fun.
[1416.16] Jack: That giant glider, I really want to know the ending of that.
[1422.16] Jack: Did the repair work?
[1424.16] Curry: It has been repaired.
[1427.56] Curry: We've put the tail back on properly because apparently it wasn't fixed on.
[1432.68] Curry: Nobody told me I thought it was fixed.
[1434.68] Curry: If people don't know, this is a humongous glider and I had to do lots of building and
[1440.84] Curry: parts to do with it.
[1442.64] Curry: And I had to drill through this carbon fiber tube in order to attach it to the main body.
[1449.08] Curry: But the guy that gave me it, I thought the tail was fixed on, but it wasn't.
[1452.96] Curry: So we were flying it in the maiden, halfway through, if you imagine the wings like this,
[1457.96] Curry: and suddenly we see the tails going like this and it's moving on its own.
[1462.0] Curry: And then he offered to land it for me because he is a much better line of sight pilot than
[1467.04] Curry: me.
[1468.04] Curry: I was flying it, I was actually flying it FPV and it was absolutely fine.
[1471.48] Curry: And he's like, I'll bring it down, I'll bring it down on the side and he smashed it into
[1474.16] Curry: the ground.
[1476.04] Curry: But I mean, it was his plane, it was his design and stuff.
[1480.16] Curry: But yeah, it broke a whole lot and I had to, I did some, I got some like carbon fiber,
[1486.16] Curry: you know, the sort of woven sheet and stuck that in with the governed and it's really
[1490.0] Curry: strong now.
[1491.0] Curry: And I put it all back together.
[1494.2] Curry: But I do need to put in a new camera mount for it because I wasn't happy with that.
[1500.64] Curry: But yeah, it can be flown again.
[1502.96] Curry: I just need a quite a large place to do it because it's absolutely humongous.
[1510.92] Curry: Just putting it together in the field takes ages.
[1512.88] Stephen: I'm sure jokes gonna be discussed it will be an end with all the space around here.
[1517.24] Stephen: I didn't bring my atom RC plane up here.
[1521.8] Stephen: The flying fish, which I probably should have got too much.
[1527.36] Stephen: I got four bags of quad kit in the car already.
[1529.96] Stephen: So I had to do some soldering while I was up here to get things in the air.
[1535.2] Stephen: I will try it at some point because I keep seeing people give glowing reviews to all
[1539.24] Stephen: the atom RC stuff.
[1540.4] Curry: So I feel like I really should give them a good shake one day.
[1544.32] Curry: Give it a try.
[1545.8] Curry: There's definitely lots of room there.
[1547.12] Curry: I recommend because if you're, if you're an Abigail Vinny, then you can get over quite
[1552.12] Curry: close to Hay-on-Wye where there's this place called Hay Bluff.
[1555.04] Curry: Yeah, it's just down the road.
[1556.04] Curry: There's this basically a mountain and there's, I used to go ride my dirt bike up there all
[1561.96] Curry: the time because there was so much space.
[1563.6] Curry: There was just mountains and fields which nobody seems to own and sheep roaming around
[1570.52] Curry: and stuff like that.
[1571.52] Curry: So loads, loads of space there.
[1573.4] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, downloaded and edited to
[1577.52] Frank: make sense when it's played audio only, censored to please the iTunes people, hosted on the
[1582.36] Frank: internet, forwarded through to your podcast provider, downloaded, playing on your device
[1586.56] Frank: and is now playing in your ears.
[1588.48] Frank: All thanks to our Patreons.
[1590.88] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits.
[1594.12] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out.
[1599.2] Jack: Chris G's here.
[1600.2] Jack: Wow.
[1601.2] Jack: When I went out with Chris G and Frank, Frank flew his and it was fun.
[1611.4] Stephen: So what's that in his profile image?
[1613.24] Stephen: Looks suspiciously like an ancient tricopter.
[1617.92] Jack: Tea copter.
[1618.92] Curry: That's definitely a tea rather than a traditional try.
[1623.76] Stephen: It's easier to nail together out of all planks that way.
[1627.76] Curry: Yeah, it's two pieces of wood rather than a three.
[1633.44] Jack: I do miss David.
[1635.04] Jack: Like I was watching, I randomly come across a video and I don't, the thing is I wanted
[1641.76] Jack: to kind of like bring it to you guys, but there was like everything wrong with the
[1647.12] Jack: RC hobby and there was this guy who kind of like, let me, let me, let me try and find
[1655.8] Jack: it.
[1656.8] Jack: But I watched it and funny enough, David did get a mention.
[1661.48] Stephen: Every two months someone releases a video of FPV is dead.
[1666.24] Stephen: Everything wrong with the RC hobby.
[1667.88] Stephen: It's just, just because YouTube's an outlet for grumpy people fundamentally.
[1672.68] Stephen: This is true.
[1673.68] Jack: Yeah.
[1674.68] Jack: Is it 15?
[1675.76] Stephen: Is it 15?
[1676.76] Jack: Yeah.
[1677.76] Jack: Yeah.
[1678.76] Jack: 15 things, uh, killing the hobby.
[1681.92] Jack: But you want the list, Jeff?
[1683.92] Jack: Probably.
[1684.92] Jack: Yeah.
[1685.92] Stephen: Like literally talking about tricopters are killing the hobby.
[1691.96] Stephen: I know.
[1692.96] Jack: No, it's not that video.
[1696.6] Stephen: It's interesting to notice that America is now officially, you know, remote ID'd and
[1705.08] Stephen: apparently nothing has changed.
[1706.64] Stephen: Surprise, surprise.
[1707.64] Stephen: It's not until September, is it?
[1709.56] Stephen: I thought it was, uh, it really, everyone's making such a stink about it.
[1714.08] Curry: Well, that's cause they don't want to do it.
[1717.3] Curry: I, you know, get that point of view.
[1718.9] Curry: I thought it wrote some data already passed.
[1721.42] Jack: Richard Warwick brings up the horrible, uh, isn't it a C3 drone?
[1728.94] Jack: It's not applicable in the UK.
[1730.94] Jack: I don't know.
[1732.62] Jack: Is that the classification thing, which I dreading classification system that has remained
[1737.1] Stephen: completely ignored by all drone manufacturers, uh, we've created a classification system
[1743.34] Stephen: and everyone was like, well done.
[1745.22] Stephen: That's nice for you.
[1746.22] Stephen: Moving on.
[1747.22] Jack: I, I, I worry cause like, aren't we constantly getting an extension for like self-built stuff?
[1755.18] Jack: And then as soon as that classification runs out, we'll have to register.
[1758.82] Stephen: It's individual factories and it's going to be Steven's drone shop output, five drones
[1764.7] Stephen: a year.
[1765.7] Stephen: Yeah.
[1766.7] Curry: This, this is the big blind footage.
[1770.14] Curry: Nothing went particularly wrong in the maiden where that wasn't a great takeoff.
[1773.62] Curry: I admit that, but it's like the, the motor was rated for free air.
[1778.42] Curry: So I put a free as battery on it.
[1779.82] Stephen: Well, that's where you went wrong, mate.
[1780.82] Stephen: You should have put a six S on it.
[1782.38] Stephen: You know, they're always cowards.
[1784.22] Curry: So I was flying FPV quite happily.
[1786.04] Curry: This is a really early version of, um, I know it's actually doing all right.
[1797.44] Curry: But that, that, um, V tower, you can kind of see it's already going slightly out like
[1802.0] Curry: that.
[1803.0] Curry: L tail now it was, it was trying to give a thumbs up sort of sign.
[1809.28] Jack: So what happened is was it given to you and you still, it was done and attached.
[1816.48] Curry: Is that, is that the biggest, that was, that was a big crash.
[1820.12] Curry: That looks exactly correct.
[1821.64] Curry: This was not me.
[1822.8] Curry: So yeah, the guy that crashed it was the designer of the plane crunch.
[1827.84] Curry: And he said, Oh, do you want to try this one out?
[1829.8] Curry: I've got a spare one.
[1831.2] Curry: That's that's him there.
[1832.2] Curry: That's Rob.
[1833.2] Curry: Uh, he's got a spare one.
[1834.2] Curry: I was like, Oh, sure.
[1835.2] Curry: And I built it up and stuff.
[1836.84] Curry: And he was there for the maiden.
[1839.48] Curry: Um, but it was only when we were saying, it looks like the tail's gone.
[1846.04] Curry: He said, did you screw the tail in?
[1847.48] Curry: I'm like, no, was that not fixed in then?
[1853.24] Curry: But but yeah, it wasn't, the damage wasn't too bad.
[1856.04] Curry: The problem was it, this is all sort of molded, uh, plasticy bits and that, that broke there.
[1862.6] Curry: So that, yeah, it's fine.
[1863.72] Curry: So that's why I basically layered that with that carbon fiber and that's really, really
[1869.2] Curry: strong now.
[1871.16] Curry: So that should be okay.
[1872.16] Jack: But yeah, it didn't even destroy the battery.
[1875.36] Jack: Like we need, we need a conclusion to this curry.
[1878.52] Jack: How much have I got to give on Patreon to get this across the line?
[1886.48] Curry: Can you, if you can all realize me some time, that'd be useful.
[1889.36] Curry: Yeah, it's just, it's just a case of getting out there and getting some time.
[1894.2] Curry: What's, uh, what's hidden valley like for flying a big thing like that?
[1897.4] Curry: Is that any good?
[1899.48] Jack: Uh, yeah, within reason.
[1902.96] Jack: It's going to be slow.
[1903.64] Jack: I think you won't get a fly away because it will crash, crash in, in the side of the hill.
[1909.0] Stephen: Oh, he won't be flying it through a barn full of smeared cheap wool.
[1912.8] Stephen: So probably be okay.
[1915.24] Jack: No, that's my job.
[1917.24] Curry: Yeah, I won't, I won't be going for that.
[1918.56] Curry: I would be going more for sort of just high soaring, happy flying around.
[1923.0] Jack: But yeah, it's just, it can get a bit windy in the valley.
[1927.32] Curry: That's okay.
[1927.96] Curry: This thing is like taller than, than both of us put together, I think.
[1932.88] Jack: Now there's an offer.
[1935.36] Jack: We'll stand on who?
[1937.4] Jack: Chris G said, I'll fly it.
[1942.88] Jack: What a perfect elaboration.
[1944.88] Curry: Every time I give it to someone else to fly, they crash it.
[1947.16] Curry: So I think I'll just carry on flying it this time.
[1950.28] Curry: I, as far as I'm concerned, I did a perfect maiden and then I handed the radio to the
[1954.04] Curry: expert to land it and he put it in the deck.
[1955.88] Jack: So he said he'll even fly it inverted.
[1961.55] Stephen: So one thing I was thinking about because this, this plane kind of has spent so much
[1965.51] Stephen: time near my bench and not much time in the air and everyone seems to have INAV or
[1970.87] Stephen: Arduon planes.
[1972.39] Stephen: Should I just go all out and just fricking INAV it and not have PWM stuff?
[1978.9] Stephen: No.
[1979.94] Stephen: You sure?
[1980.82] Stephen: Because you complicate matters.
[1982.22] Stephen: Yeah, but I used to complexity guys.
[1983.98] Stephen: Like I spend all my time working with thousands of containers and Kubernetes and
[1989.5] Stephen: stuff as my day job.
[1990.78] Stephen: Like that's fine.
[1991.86] Stephen: I could do that.
[1995.09] Curry: It's a really simple thing.
[1996.97] Curry: If you, if you watched that other video where I talked about the, um, the Radio
[2001.69] Curry: Master ERS PWM receivers, I flew a very basic tiny wing then and it was just
[2007.81] Curry: literally three channels plugged in and I had a good old laugh with that.
[2013.13] Curry: Absolutely nothing.
[2014.61] Curry: No OSD whatsoever, just a picture.
[2017.89] Curry: I just had a voice on the radio saying when the battery got low and that was it.
[2022.89] Jack: I, I did follow that advice originally.
[2027.37] Jack: I had a tech scene though and it didn't have INAV and I flew it with just the
[2034.85] Jack: servos and stuff and that was the most I ever flew and, uh, as soon as I
[2042.01] Jack: as soon as you do add the like, you know, adding like the GPS and the flight
[2050.45] Jack: controller and everything with the flight controller, I spend my life flying
[2055.33] Jack: in manual and then now and again, I'll hit return to home and in I wasn't
[2061.65] Stephen: even considering, uh, GPS.
[2063.77] Stephen: I just wanted the flight controller to have like decent OSD.
[2067.85] Stephen: That was mainly what it do.
[2069.17] Stephen: Just, yeah, give me a decent OSD.
[2073.44] Stephen: What would you use the OSD for?
[2076.08] Stephen: Put up a crosshair battery readout.
[2079.68] Stephen: I'm not sure if I do.
[2080.6] Stephen: I do also have a lot of GPS modules.
[2083.0] Stephen: So I might GPS it.
[2085.08] Curry: So I've got, got a ton of, you could do it, but if you, if you're looking to
[2090.56] Curry: sort of just start and keeping it simple and you've got like a little plane,
[2095.72] Curry: it's, it's a case of like, do you really want to pull that stuff in?
[2098.68] Curry: And clearly you do.
[2099.84] Curry: I don't know why I'm even arguing with you.
[2101.72] Curry: Cause it's like, hang on.
[2103.52] Curry: Could I, could I over engineer this in some way?
[2105.92] Curry: Yes, I can.
[2107.44] Curry: Let's do it.
[2109.96] Curry: Steven's in monologue right now.
[2112.6] Jack: Equally, like part of me is like, Curry's right.
[2115.64] Jack: Keeping it simple and getting it and getting into the basic things and like
[2119.44] Jack: you feel the aircraft is the same thing as the, the, you know, older visceral.
[2128.08] Curry: That won't stop it being wobbly.
[2130.08] Curry: That's the wind.
[2131.8] Jack: Yeah, that's how it works.
[2134.76] Stephen: I'm not sure how planes are made for me, to be honest.
[2137.76] Stephen: I'm not sure, but I'll go, I'll revisit sometime.
[2142.92] Jack: It's, it's, it's a what wobbly kind of without getting all
[2148.44] Jack: Japanese because of Curry being coming right from Japan.
[2155.52] Jack: But yeah, it's simple things back in the old days, how it was made.
[2160.76] Stephen: Yeah, for one simple things, I read a book, not do like radio control, to be fair,
[2165.4] Stephen: but that's, it's already a level of complexity is already fairly high.
[2169.4] Stephen: When I've had to configure an open source firmware on my radio and a control
[2173.76] Stephen: receiver, and I've had to figure out where all these servos go and which way
[2177.88] Stephen: around the servo should push and yada, yada.
[2182.3] Jack: We're getting into the old, that's shown out, but there is an element of,
[2187.98] Jack: is it masochist nurse where if you enjoy the RC hobby, there's an element of you
[2193.98] Jack: enjoy punching yourself because stuff doesn't work properly.
[2196.62] Stephen: You put your sandals on just to go into the brambles.
[2199.3] Jack: Yeah, yeah.
[2200.38] Jack: And you find out the reason why it doesn't work is because you're an idiot.
[2204.26] Curry: I think the reason we talk about keeping it simple is because if you're coming in
[2209.42] Curry: and obviously you're very experienced pilot in terms of quads and stuff and can
[2213.3] Curry: do all the electronics, but if you're coming in new to a new type of model,
[2218.14] Curry: then I think it's good to fly in this more rural sense before you start putting
[2222.78] Curry: in stuff because it's like that will change the way your sticks.
[2226.62] Stephen: We should all just disable the gyro on our quads because we've been just
[2230.66] Stephen: treating ourselves, modding ourselves really heavily.
[2234.02] Curry: I've always been a firm proponent of quads should have, we should have a
[2238.26] Curry: controller with four sticks.
[2239.54] Curry: We should have two in our feet and two in our hands and they control each
[2243.38] Curry: motor independently, and we should do it like that.
[2245.98] Stephen: And if you can't fly like that, that sounds like a point.
[2248.78] Jack: Are you going to build that, Rick?
[2252.62] Jack: Frank, someone, I think it was Frank,
[2255.9] Jack: wanted me to make the mechanical gyro as well.
[2259.98] Jack: And I was like, I'm not doing that.
[2262.66] Stephen: Aren't gyros like mechanical anyway, just on a miniature scale?
[2267.5] Stephen: I'm not doing that.
[2268.14] Stephen: It's fundamentally an electro-mechanical.
[2269.78] Stephen: I don't know how it works.
[2270.58] Stephen: It's a magic box.
[2271.62] Stephen: It's fundamentally electro-mechanical because you can kill them with too much shock.
[2275.66] Jack: Yeah, I guess.
[2276.58] Jack: I don't know.
[2277.82] Stephen: Frank would know this.
[2278.98] Stephen: I don't know.
[2279.34] Stephen: Where's Frank when you need him?
[2280.42] Jack: Frank, how did your gyros work, Daddy?
[2284.94] Jack: Yes, they are.
[2286.7] Jack: Do you want me to send you an invite link and you come on for the last 20 minutes,
[2290.1] Jack: Chris G, as you are clearly a legend.
[2296.9] Jack: I am so tempted, Curry, like with the whole Chris G.
[2303.02] Jack: I'd love to two of my favorite people.
[2308.06] Jack: You know, Chris G and Curry Kitten together on a project.
[2315.42] Jack: Oh, amazing.
[2317.06] Jack: What would it be?
[2319.14] Stephen: A large wooden tricopter plane?
[2321.22] Jack: Hopefully getting that plane across the finish line.
[2326.18] Stephen: I just imagine, like, they've finally done it.
[2328.66] Stephen: They're standing next to a craft, which is jacked straight into it.
[2332.18] Curry: This is what one of my friends came up as an idea for a fun project.
[2338.38] Curry: He suggested, and at this point, that the problem being, you can only get one set of
[2343.58] Curry: head tracking things.
[2344.3] Curry: He suggested that two people fly a plane using FPV goggles, both using head trackers.
[2351.38] Curry: One guy has, like, your and throttle, and the other guy has pitch and roll or something,
[2360.86] Curry: and they both have to stand there and go like this in order to make the plane fly in some
[2365.1] Curry: sort of cooperative mode.
[2367.1] Curry: But as far as I know, you can only put one head tracker into.
[2372.22] Jack: Well, that's only because you could splice the head tracking signal because they're
[2376.38] Stephen: connecting via DSC.
[2378.02] Stephen: If you connect via another method that's not DSC, you could have one head tracker on
[2382.38] Stephen: DSC, and you could have one on Bluetooth.
[2385.54] Stephen: Exactly.
[2386.22] Stephen: Yeah, there you are.
[2388.18] Curry: Steve, in tax use two different radio receivers.
[2390.7] Curry: Couldn't we do that?
[2391.42] Jack: Yeah, yeah.
[2393.22] Jack: Stephen, can you help me submit a bug report at some point?
[2397.7] Jack: Because I updated, you know, the five channel E LRS receivers that are PWM.
[2406.62] Jack: I've sent you a link on Facebook.
[2409.26] Stephen: Yes, I'll help.
[2410.14] Stephen: All right.
[2410.98] Stephen: And you've asked in help and support and no one's.
[2413.82] Jack: No, no, no, I haven't because all the other guys submit a pull request or whatever.
[2419.34] Jack: I don't know bug report or whatever.
[2422.22] Jack: Yeah, so I updated them to the latest thing and I get telemetry loss, telemetry,
[2429.02] Jack: telemetry recovered.
[2430.3] Jack: Well, we had that all over mine as well today on.
[2434.3] Jack: Yeah, and then I rolled it back to the one before that and then that works.
[2439.46] Curry: Did you try deleting all the telemetry and re-finding it?
[2443.18] Stephen: Which version did you update to 330 or 321?
[2447.06] Jack: I don't know, I'll find out.
[2451.13] Stephen: And what version is your radio?
[2452.53] Jack: Do you want me to do the latest, I think?
[2458.5] Jack: Okay.
[2459.34] Jack: It was a couple of weeks ago now.
[2460.74] Stephen: Yeah, I noticed that because I had a model and I thought it was one of these EP2s with
[2464.94] Stephen: a ceramic antenna and I thought, oh, it's just, I've just installed it in a stupid
[2468.38] Stephen: place on top of the VTX that's getting drowned out.
[2471.94] Stephen: But yeah, I had the same thing and it was, it was kind of winding me up a bit today.
[2477.34] Stephen: Yeah, I'm not looking to that.
[2479.1] Stephen: Okay.
[2480.62] Jack: Yeah, I just rolled back to the one before it and that works.
[2483.82] Jack: So Cole had an interesting one with his tango.
[2490.02] Jack: He started getting the new Crossfire receivers and they wouldn't work with a certain version.
[2498.1] Jack: He had to then update because he finally built one of the, you know, the, I sent him one of
[2505.06] Jack: those kits for the ELRS slash Crossfire dongle thing.
[2513.74] Jack: This isn't bad, it's good.
[2516.02] Jack: Like, LDO is making Curry Kitten's brain work in stupid, ingenious ideas, but it's
[2521.66] Jack: trying to get out and fly with people with the wonderful weather that we're having and
[2526.1] Jack: everyone being so busy.
[2527.5] Jack: Right.
[2528.74] Stephen: So that wonderful at the moment, is it?
[2530.94] Stephen: Yeah.
[2531.14] Stephen: Cause I was having that today and it was really winding me up.
[2533.38] Stephen: It kept me going, oh, lost, recovered, lost, recovered.
[2535.94] Stephen: And I was thinking, should I just turn off the telemetry warning?
[2538.06] Stephen: It's not like I care anyway.
[2540.3] Stephen: Um, three, two, one, and three, two, one, and both.
[2542.98] Stephen: Yeah, it doesn't like it.
[2545.18] Stephen: But I, I flew with something on not three, two, one, and it was perfectly happy.
[2552.1] Stephen: That's curious, isn't it?
[2555.46] Jack: Yeah.
[2555.7] Jack: I've never, I've never, GitHub slightly terrifies me with the sort of like working
[2561.38] Jack: professionals of like, I found a bug and it's like, no, you didn't, you're just not
[2566.26] Stephen: using it properly or like, I've got a problem and there's like a flow chart.
[2571.14] Stephen: I found a problem.
[2572.58] Stephen: And then the next stage is go F yourself.
[2576.34] Stephen: And then the bottom is like resolved.
[2579.34] Stephen: Ah, wonderful.
[2581.02] Stephen: Yeah.
[2583.9] Jack: I mean, so much so I built two of them.
[2587.86] Jack: And just to make sure that I definitely, definitely had the problem.
[2593.5] Stephen: Yeah.
[2594.06] Stephen: All right.
[2594.5] Stephen: I'll give it, I'll give it a good shake and see what happens.
[2599.06] Jack: Yeah.
[2599.7] Jack: But equally I'm, you know, I'm used to devs just telling me to go fuck myself,
[2604.18] Jack: which is pretty much what Hydra used to do to me.
[2610.18] Jack: Yeah.
[2611.26] Jack: Well, it's like, you've got to send it manual board rate.
[2614.22] Stephen: I'm like, I'm sorry.
[2615.54] Stephen: Stop hitting me.
[2617.66] Stephen: Be nice.
[2619.22] Stephen: I don't, I deserved it.
[2620.3] Stephen: Um, yeah, I'm sure it's workable, but we'll figure something out.
[2623.46] Stephen: Um, yeah, like I said, I've had the same problem and I just thought it was my
[2626.5] Stephen: stupid building of jamming the antenna in the wrong place, but if you've had it too,
[2630.82] Stephen: then that's probably worth looking into.
[2634.1] Jack: I, I'll stick, I'll stick my neck out a bit.
[2640.5] Jack: But I am so impressed with the E LRS and it's general like ease of, you know,
[2651.38] Jack: stuff kind of like just working that that annoying thing of your radio is too close
[2657.66] Jack: to your receiver free sky.
[2660.38] Stephen: I've never really sort of like experienced that price of receivers has gone down.
[2665.38] Stephen: Like what else in the hobby has actually got in the last five years.
[2670.92] Curry: Not a lot.
[2672.44] Curry: Not much that talking of GitHub has just made me go and check my issue.
[2676.56] Curry: I raised yolks ago about Bluetooth not working on Android for a joystick, which
[2683.6] Curry: says it's resolved now, which I'm going to have to check out.
[2687.28] Jack: And I, yeah, I still need to like bug you about coming down and having
[2694.72] Jack: a go at the backpack because I couldn't get it to work.
[2698.44] Jack: I mean, it, it talks to everything.
[2700.08] Jack: Everything's flashed.
[2701.72] Jack: It's wired up correctly.
[2703.68] Jack: I just don't know how you had the wrong module, didn't you?
[2709.72] Jack: Well, no, I mean, I've got a box to now got an internal module.
[2713.16] Jack: Oh, right.
[2713.56] Jack: Yeah, that should work.
[2714.84] Jack: That should have the chip set with it.
[2719.02] Jack: I think I don't know.
[2720.34] Jack: I don't know.
[2721.34] Jack: I don't know how to look any of this stuff up.
[2726.11] Curry: Yeah.
[2727.15] Curry: Manuals.
[2730.39] Curry: Manuals it's self-documenting.
[2732.15] Curry: Have you heard the developers?
[2733.75] Curry: Oh, no.
[2734.99] Jack: Ah, front time.
[2735.99] Jack: I know you can come down with the Zorro and like enter my bind phrase or I'll
[2741.07] Jack: just set my goggles to your bind phrase.
[2742.99] Jack: Isn't there a model loan thing that no one ever uses that's
[2745.35] Stephen: supposed to be super simple?
[2747.63] Stephen: Yeah.
[2747.83] Stephen: So super simple.
[2748.79] Stephen: No one has ever done a video on it.
[2750.15] Stephen: I'll show you how it worked.
[2753.42] Jack: Maybe that's what we should do.
[2754.82] Jack: Maybe we should meet up.
[2755.94] Jack: Like you said, Steven, meet up and be like, right, let's spend an hour
[2760.06] Jack: trying to get this to work.
[2762.1] Jack: Well, yeah.
[2763.5] Stephen: If we do meet up, I must make one stipulation, Jack, and that's that you
[2769.54] Stephen: bring at least two working models with you.
[2773.66] Stephen: You can bring as many as unknown quantities with you as you want.
[2777.5] Stephen: But if we meet up at least two models that actually work, because Jack's
[2784.14] Stephen: kind of go-to plan is arrive at field, give something a cursory checkover,
[2789.34] Stephen: realize it's completely screwed and get his laptop out.
[2792.58] Stephen: Then realize all the software on his laptop is out of date and he has to
[2795.38] Stephen: update it on a phone hotspot.
[2797.34] Stephen: Then realize he's got problems with his phone hotspot connectivity, walk
[2801.18] Stephen: around waving the laptop and phone hotspot around, and it just goes
[2805.14] Stephen: downhill from there.
[2806.74] Curry: So well, this is this is Jack and podcasting, isn't it?
[2811.22] Curry: It's like get podcasts set up, make sure it all works, make a podcast,
[2816.1] Curry: take it all out, unplug it, rejig it, plug it all in the wrong way for
[2819.62] Curry: next week so you can spend time sorting it back out again.
[2822.54] Jack: I like unplugging random cables, giving them a good old lick and then
[2826.86] Jack: shoving them in wherever.
[2828.02] Stephen: Marmite and honey on things because that helps, you know, get some ants involved.
[2832.7] Stephen: Yes.
[2834.86] Stephen: How you doing, Chris?
[2835.78] Jack: And also.
[2837.9] Jack: Hello, Chris G appeared.
[2839.5] Jack: Nice to see you in the house.
[2840.7] Jack: Hi guys.
[2841.46] Jack: Please, please explain to Steven why he should fly PWM and like it.
[2847.7] ChrisG: Oh, put me on the spot.
[2849.3] ChrisG: Um, it just, it makes you think harder about what you're doing.
[2856.14] ChrisG: Uh, are you talking about fixed wing here?
[2858.34] Jack: Yes, of course.
[2859.5] Jack: You are the fixed wing expert.
[2861.86] ChrisG: I mean, obviously you should do it on fixed wing.
[2863.9] ChrisG: I mean, is there any other possible way of flying a fixed?
[2866.5] Stephen: Well, you can't get a servo that has its digital interface.
[2869.02] Stephen: So you're, you're stuck really, aren't you?
[2874.18] ChrisG: Yeah.
[2874.58] Curry: Well, what we're suggesting to Steven is he should fly regular, just
[2878.9] Curry: getting at the servos to the receiver and do it that way.
[2881.22] Curry: But he seems to be very keen now on putting things in the middle of it,
[2884.26] Curry: like a flight controller and GPS and cameras.
[2887.46] Curry: Well, obviously a camera, things like that.
[2890.94] ChrisG: Uh, it won't win you any races.
[2892.46] ChrisG: I wasn't planning on racing.
[2893.58] ChrisG: I'll tell you that much.
[2896.58] ChrisG: Depends what you want to do with it.
[2897.78] ChrisG: I've got a nano goblin with iNav on and it's great.
[2901.14] ChrisG: Um, but everything else fixed wing wise is no flight controller.
[2905.62] ChrisG: And I really can't be bothered to put one in.
[2909.78] Jack: Or a work or a working, um, or a working camera.
[2917.78] ChrisG: No, I've got a semi working camera.
[2921.22] ChrisG: This is good enough.
[2923.14] Jack: Yeah.
[2923.38] Jack: I mean, you know, you need to, you need to give Frank something to do.
[2929.06] ChrisG: Speaking of Frank, uh, did anyone see his writer in BMFA?
[2933.54] Jack: Oh, yes.
[2934.98] Jack: We have a link.
[2936.42] Jack: Curry, you've got, you've, you've got, I don't, it comes out in the, the, the booklet,
[2942.5] Jack: which you've got to be, has anyone joined?
[2944.9] Jack: Yeah.
[2945.14] Jack: The magazine, the BMFA magazine.
[2946.82] Stephen: Why would I get a magazine?
[2948.5] ChrisG: So if you're not a BMFA member already, that was the best reason to join it.
[2953.22] Stephen: But I said no to the magazine.
[2956.18] Stephen: Is there not an digital version of it?
[2963.07] ChrisG: Digital?
[2963.55] ChrisG: What?
[2964.19] ChrisG: What is this digital you speak of?
[2966.83] Curry: Can we talk about digital sandals next?
[2968.83] Stephen: What's wrong with you?
[2970.11] ChrisG: Yeah.
[2970.59] Stephen: I've got a digital membership card just appears on like Google wallet
[2974.51] Stephen: and flashes up a little QR code instead of a waiting for the paper one.
[2978.83] Stephen: Yeah.
[2979.31] Jack: Um, yeah.
[2980.59] Jack: Okay.
[2981.15] Jack: So, uh, the BMFA, if you're a member and you haven't ticked the box,
[2987.47] Jack: you get sent a magazine every so often.
[2992.99] Jack: And Frank wrote a rough draft.
[2996.03] Jack: Frank says, please don't read it.
[2997.39] Jack: I spent about 20 minutes drafting up sending, sending to the task of feedback
[3002.59] Jack: and whether they had a word count style guide or anything.
[3006.19] Jack: And the first I knew the rough draft was being published.
[3011.79] Jack: Was turning the page this evening and apparently Frank just wanted a hole
[3017.63] Jack: to open up and swallow him.
[3020.19] Jack: Kind of like France, the experience of being friends with me.
[3024.11] Stephen: Oh, Lord.
[3025.47] Jack: I've been cringing too hard to read it back yet.
[3030.19] Jack: So yeah.
[3031.23] ChrisG: That's good.
[3032.83] ChrisG: He's doing nothing.
[3033.47] Jack: You enjoyed it.
[3035.47] ChrisG: Yeah.
[3035.63] ChrisG: I thought it was great.
[3037.07] ChrisG: I didn't expect to get the BMFA magazine through and read something in it.
[3041.15] ChrisG: I actually wanted to read.
[3042.67] ChrisG: It was, it was good.
[3044.99] Stephen: It was a win.
[3045.95] Stephen: You hear that?
[3046.83] Stephen: Frank Frank come out.
[3048.03] Stephen: There you are vindicated.
[3051.31] ChrisG: And I like his GPPR friendly picture of me in there as well.
[3056.67] ChrisG: Are you just a giant pixel?
[3058.11] Jack: Oh, what?
[3058.51] Jack: Because they can't tell it's you.
[3060.43] ChrisG: Yeah.
[3062.59] ChrisG: Thoroughly analysed.
[3064.91] ChrisG: You want an Acro?
[3065.63] ChrisG: What upside down?
[3069.63] Jack: I know.
[3071.07] Jack: Chris, are you proposing to Curry to let you fly the glider of doom?
[3080.27] ChrisG: Yeah.
[3080.43] ChrisG: Tell me more about this glider.
[3081.71] ChrisG: I only only managed to get on halfway through or you saw the tail end of it.
[3085.07] ChrisG: It looked interesting.
[3088.48] Curry: Well, I flew it fine.
[3090.64] Curry: And then I handed the radio to an expert to land and he crashed it.
[3094.24] Curry: And thus I repaired it, but I haven't flown it again yet.
[3097.2] Curry: And that's been sitting in my loft for about two years now.
[3100.48] Curry: But it's ready to fly as soon as I put a camera on.
[3104.08] Curry: But I'm not sure I'm going to pass the radio to anybody else these days
[3107.44] Curry: because they might crash it again.
[3109.2] Curry: And I have to spend ages repairing it.
[3111.92] Curry: It's a bit of a pain.
[3112.88] Curry: It takes about half an hour to put together with the stupid, bloody wings go on
[3115.92] Curry: and you have to screw those in.
[3118.08] Curry: Ten years later, you get to fly it for a while.
[3121.2] ChrisG: So you say he was an expert.
[3122.32] ChrisG: What was he an expert in?
[3124.56] Curry: He designed the plane and he had one to test for me.
[3130.64] Curry: But he managed to stall it coming around the corner.
[3136.08] Curry: I mean, he's a decent line of sight pilot.
[3140.16] Curry: I can usually land a plane line of sight when I have to.
[3144.24] Curry: But I prefer not to.
[3145.2] Curry: So I gave it to him and he just went,
[3148.24] Curry: spiral down a splat.
[3150.4] ChrisG: What's the make of the plane?
[3151.92] ChrisG: Have I heard of it before?
[3154.24] Curry: No, it's called a sky hook.
[3156.8] Curry: It was, I don't know how many were made.
[3159.92] Curry: I think really big planes have gone kind of out of fashion, haven't they?
[3162.8] Curry: Because you can get really quite compact planes that can fly for like an hour
[3168.24] Curry: and you just put, you know, INEV on them and you can send them away for a long distance
[3173.68] Curry: and fly them for a long time and quite happy without all this hassle that you used to do
[3178.64] Curry: in like long range FPV was like, let's get a really big plane
[3181.76] Curry: so we can put lots of lipos in it and launch it.
[3184.32] Curry: Now it's kind of like, let's get a small plane and put some lions in it and it goes for,
[3191.84] Curry: I mean, how long's your micro gobbling go for?
[3195.2] Curry: About an hour.
[3196.56] Curry: Yeah, an hour.
[3197.28] Curry: Yeah, on 28, 250.
[3200.0] ChrisG: Yeah.
[3200.48] Curry: Yeah, it's crazy.
[3202.16] ChrisG: Yeah, because you fly FPV and you're looking at your INEV,
[3206.64] ChrisG: returning to home, oh, it's loitering around me now.
[3209.36] ChrisG: It's only 30 meters up.
[3210.56] ChrisG: I'll just take my gobbles off and have a look at it.
[3212.56] ChrisG: And then you're like, where is it?
[3214.0] ChrisG: I can hear it.
[3214.72] ChrisG: I can't see anything.
[3216.0] ChrisG: And there's this tiny, tiny little dot just going around.
[3218.72] ChrisG: It's only about 30 meters.
[3222.32] ChrisG: That is one of the big planes.
[3225.04] Jack: Competent spotter knows exactly where it is, though.
[3228.24] ChrisG: Of course.
[3229.6] Jack: Yes, definitely.
[3231.04] ChrisG: I was flying that in a field one time.
[3234.72] ChrisG: First time I've flown there, some guy came over on a bike,
[3238.72] ChrisG: claiming that he was a farmer and that he owned the land.
[3241.84] ChrisG: And he was spending last week here shooting other people's drones out of the sky,
[3248.8] ChrisG: which is interesting.
[3250.16] ChrisG: And I'll just call the police.
[3252.16] ChrisG: Oh, no, you got quite a hit.
[3254.88] ChrisG: And then when he sees the plane in the air, he goes, oh, that's a plane.
[3261.04] ChrisG: Oh, that's fine then.
[3262.48] ChrisG: That's different.
[3263.52] ChrisG: Oh, crack on, mate.
[3264.4] ChrisG: No problem.
[3265.36] ChrisG: So that was an odd experience.
[3269.12] ChrisG: Oh, turned out all right.
[3273.78] Curry: Planes aren't seen as evil as quads.
[3276.98] Curry: Still, even to the general public, even if you've got like cameras and stuff.
[3282.02] Curry: We don't know why.
[3284.66] Jack: Planes are nice.
[3285.62] Jack: You go on holiday in them and you have a friendly pilot and, you know, you clap when they land.
[3293.14] ChrisG: Yeah.
[3294.58] Jack: You know,
[3294.98] ChrisG: Depends what airline you're flying on.
[3296.9] ChrisG: But some of them you might clap when you land.
[3300.74] ChrisG: Yeah.
[3301.7] ChrisG: I think you definitely have enough space to fly that at Hidden Valley.
[3305.3] ChrisG: If it wasn't too bad weather.
[3309.07] Curry: Yeah, it's a big bugger.
[3310.51] Curry: That's it.
[3310.99] Curry: That's my two problem planes.
[3312.59] Curry: My other one is my FX 79 wing.
[3317.55] Curry: The disaster plane that launched blew up, launched, blew up, launched, flew,
[3323.39] Curry: and then the autopilot blew up.
[3326.19] Curry: That was fun.
[3328.19] Jack: Yeah.
[3329.47] Jack: Stephen, you need to, you just need, I know PWM scares you and it's a bit weird,
[3335.31] Jack: but you just, just please come along for the journey.
[3338.99] Jack: Appreciate it.
[3340.59] Curry: Servos are your friends.
[3344.59] Curry: I just had a, Jack made that t-shirt.
[3347.31] Stephen: I've had so much just weirdness with servos, mainly on cars where they just sort of lock up
[3352.43] Stephen: and jam and just kind of don't trust them too much.
[3356.83] Jack: Yeah.
[3357.07] Jack: Well, cars, cars take a hell of an abuse.
[3360.83] Jack: Like you can't like, you know, use a RC car and expect it to last very long.
[3370.34] Jack: They strip out,
[3371.3] Jack: they snap, they crash into stuff.
[3373.3] Stephen: Yeah.
[3373.54] Stephen: Well, they've all got kind of sacrificial joints between the servo and the steering.
[3378.74] Stephen: So it shouldn't, you know, if you tension the steering, it should just, you know,
[3385.14] Stephen: slip and not push the servo around and strip it.
[3388.18] Stephen: But yeah, I don't know.
[3390.02] Stephen: I'll give it a go.
[3391.46] Stephen: It's just, just one of those things, space and patience.
[3394.58] Stephen: Like I can just test it quite and take it off and buzz around.
[3397.7] Stephen: And planes seem to be this whole rigmarole, but I'll get there in the end.
[3401.86] Jack: Yeah.
[3403.22] Jack: CG, man.
[3404.18] Jack: It's all about CG.
[3405.38] Jack: You say that.
[3406.26] Curry: I think you forget your little test hover with your new quad when it was exciting.
[3411.54] Curry: And if it went garden rake and pulling out of the bush.
[3413.94] Stephen: Yeah.
[3414.82] Jack: All right.
[3415.22] Jack: Should we call it there?
[3416.9] Jack: We might do a bonus part.
[3419.46] Jack: Watch me trying to diagnose the problem.
[3422.58] Jack: Let Chris G teach us the ways of the socks and handles.
