[0.0] Jack: Hello and you're listening to what's drawn out and special thank you to our lovely patrons that help donate
[7.48] Jack: So that we could pay the editor to remove the swear words and silly things we say
[12.56] Jack: Massive. Thank you to call us campus art folk now Sam Dharma on with the show
[51.43] Jack: Hello and
[53.15] Jack: Welcome back to let's draw now you're joined once again for the eight-year special and
[60.79] Jack: You are joined with the wonderful Bell Rick. Hello. Good evening
[67.47] Jack: My darling Cole is back
[70.75] Jack: Howdy and
[73.27] Jack: Andrew Schach Frank is here, but I believe he's
[79.27] Stephen: Trying to fix he's experiencing some device issues
[82.55] Jack: He will be online with us shortly. Hopefully, you know what Frank sounds like if you don't listen to the previous episode and
[90.99] Jack: He was one who's very involved if he has all the law and I'm bright until I fly by the way
[98.15] Jack: We've made it to be years
[100.79] Jack: One year was a bit questionable. Was that the year where me and it was just me and Tony or was it?
[108.43] Jack: Co vid house the sense of year the year Elvio almost got cancelled. Yeah
[114.67] Jack: Is that was like oh man?
[117.31] Jack: Tony's in the chat by the way
[119.35] Jack: Tone your your Tomahawk's been done and he's sat on the side for a while. Do you want to come get it?
[127.15] Stephen: Think after eight years, maybe we could do an episode where we teach Tony to build a quad. I've tried that
[134.39] Jack: He's not that bad. Hello Frank
[137.23] Jack: Hello evening. Hello, please. You can hear me now. Yeah, I'm very excited that you're wearing a t-shirt that just says fire on it
[147.07] Jack: Yeah, is there any is there any chance of some fire
[152.83] Frank: Hopefully not I have been charging life is but intentionally gonna cause fire
[160.87] Jack: I've always wanted to fill the woofler full of ice
[165.35] Jack: Propanol and see with the combined mixture of bubbles and alcohol
[171.11] Stephen: How deadly that would be? I just deter should work with alcohol. Does it still foam? I don't know
[178.23] Jack: Frank you're smart. I
[180.83] Stephen: Haven't tried and it's really only one way to be sure we know that
[185.39] Jack: Yeah, I'll do it outside for science for science
[190.51] Jack: Yeah, we'll do that outside. I think that is so funny
[197.85] Jack: Can I come say hi and just go back from yeah sure man Tony you're always welcome
[204.21] Jack: Yeah, you know, you know that you're
[207.89] Stephen: Quadding exploits and why indeed you need to rebuild the seven inch
[213.49] Stephen: Which was it wasn't it in one piece when we saw it last? So maybe there's been an instant
[219.25] Jack: No, it was that that was completely me. Oh, yeah
[224.33] Frank: Disassembled it was it left too close to Jack for too long. No, you put it down on a
[231.13] Frank: Jack's bed for like five minutes. All of a sudden. It's just disassembled itself. We just ran over with his desk chair
[239.41] Frank: Five other projects but five other new projects parts have been used to rebuild it still going cool
[248.89] Jack: but the run over
[252.21] Jack: Do you know how close I was to being like
[254.49] Jack: Do you know what if I could be asked to desolder it I would have added it to one of those keychain things that I got
[260.33] Jack: Yeah, I ordered a load of them at us load. I was gonna put it on there. I thought that's a bit mental
[266.37] Jack: I'm like sending a
[268.37] Koel: Working
[273.81] Koel: That's a flex to the people that like can't get kissed by controllers it's like yeah, I got one on a keychain
[283.29] Jack: You've got like one working kiss ultra one spare and a working kiss
[291.61] Jack: Yeah, what happened
[294.21] Koel: Man, so eight years though, eh?
[296.93] Koel: That's great. No, I remember last year when I was out in the UK visiting guys and
[302.69] Koel: Yeah, we had the whole pub thing and after the FPV drone fest
[307.37] Koel: Was it after before I think after it must have been yeah. Yeah, that was awesome, man. That's crazy
[313.73] Koel: It's coming up to ten years now. That's that's pretty wild
[317.93] Koel: That's gonna be the goal right ten years. I still think that in somehow some way in some shape or form
[326.21] Koel: LDO should be part of the Guinness World Records of like longest standing FPV drone podcast and
[333.09] Koel: You know very loosely
[335.21] Koel: you know loosely, but like
[338.33] Koel: Have there been any?
[341.37] Koel: Longer standing weekly podcasts for this long. That's what I want. Oh, they certainly have been other podcasts
[348.57] Koel: But
[350.57] Koel: Weekly though and for like as yeah, yeah like security now
[355.05] Stephen: Which is an IT security thing started at like oh five and they're just having up to like a thousand episodes
[361.89] Koel: Are they FPV drone related?
[366.81] Stephen: We are the UK's foremost FPV drone related podcast
[370.69] Frank: I mean does anyone else in the chat or anywhere know of any other?
[375.81] Frank: RC vaguely related podcasts that have reached
[380.05] Frank: 416 episodes and
[383.17] Stephen: Consecutive or which is pretty good
[386.33] Stephen: Yeah, I really don't know any other
[388.09] Stephen: I mean there was that screaming props one that was following and that got off to a promising start
[392.77] Stephen: But they only did like three episodes and then stopped the dead cell one looks looks good
[397.53] Stephen: They've got a cool look to it, but I'm not sure how long it's gonna run for
[401.25] Stephen: Everything else in my podcatcher seemed to have stopped broadcasting in 2017
[406.61] Stephen: 2015 when it was hot and just two years later. They were done
[410.09] Frank: Yeah, you know the all the flight tests one was like leave
[413.69] Frank: They've been rebooted over the years from like one incarnation to another so they're like under a different banner
[419.73] Frank: So they don't quite have the same number of episodes. So I'd be interested to know anyone's anyone's got any
[427.01] Koel: Can we can we take that claim? I?
[429.85] Koel: I feel like we're a pretty strong contender for that. I don't know. I feel like like
[435.53] Koel: Okay, under these specific specific. Okay specific specifications. Okay under these specifications like
[441.69] Koel: longest-standing weekly FPV drone related podcast
[447.01] Koel: Like
[448.09] Koel: There's gotta be like okay
[449.77] Koel: I know a guy who has a Guinness World Records cuz he's like the world's youngest
[453.85] Koel: VFX artist because he has like some accreditation to a thing
[456.85] Koel: I think he was like 15 or 16 or something. So world's youngest
[461.49] Koel: VFX whatever so then world's longest-standing FPV or consecutive
[467.65] Koel: Whatever FPV drone related podcast. I feel like we would fill that void
[471.89] Frank: Yeah, I'm I'm still slightly disappointed that Clinton Roberts didn't manage to get the Guinness World Book of Records at the
[479.85] Frank: LDO drone games back in 2016 for the most number of
[485.09] Frank: Rolls with an egg and spoon attached to the drone
[490.89] Frank: And that was because we were using tomatoes instead of eggs
[497.41] Frank: So if we had said we want to put in for the most number of
[502.13] Frank: Rolls with a wooden spoon and a tomato on they could have been a Guinness World Records because we applied
[508.89] Frank: The egg in the spoon and then we used vegan eggs because that was what the farmer had for us
[515.25] Koel: see any any slate any slate detail makes a big difference because then it's like
[521.01] Jack: Who else did that? Who else did that? Right? Yeah, do you have to bring someone out to like verify it?
[528.05] Jack: Could we go back give it another go? I
[531.33] Frank: Think once you've applied for it once you can't resubmit it. I think that was the reason why it
[537.29] Frank: Didn't go anywhere after that, but I think you can use video footage
[542.17] Frank: Although they prefer it if they can be there
[545.21] Frank: That's my understanding
[547.13] Frank: Basically, you just got a contact with them in awesome. Yeah, it's pretty cool
[553.56] Frank: Yeah, grumpy RC flyer says we've got to take about three episodes off the lateness though. I
[560.56] Frank: Felt like we've done some extra long ones along the way
[563.54] Koel: Probably makes up for it. Well all the 10-minute lathes that probably adds up to more than three episodes
[571.66] Stephen: So oil viewers have been collectively waiting in lobbies for
[579.5] Frank: Now I'm considering the amount of human lifetimes they're waiting for all the other stuff I
[585.06] Koel: Feel like they already know and expected though. So it's like yeah, it's like oh, it's it's oh, sorry
[591.7] Koel: Not three o'clock cuz I see you guys are in UK time. It's it's not 8 p.m. They're not here yet
[596.46] Koel: It's it's not ten minutes after eight. They're not ready. I
[600.26] Jack: Mean there was one time where YouTube broke everything and we were a record almost
[607.78] Jack: Like 40 minutes late, but no one could start their shows
[613.42] Frank: Was that when the hangouts decided it didn't want to work anymore
[617.42] Frank: Hangouts and that was a thing. Hey wild tone star has appeared. Hello. How is everyone?
[625.66] Tony: Good. Thank you. How are you doing?
[628.3] Tony: Yeah, not too bad. Just come back from a ride
[631.06] Tony: Took Coco out. She was a bit ill the last couple of days. So I haven't taken her just gone
[635.74] Frank: I mean, I know you're small but you shouldn't be riding caper around
[641.3] Tony: It's a bit cruel, isn't it? Oh
[643.54] Jack: I
[645.54] Jack: Want to pick brain Frank's brains a bit
[652.3] Jack: Taking the scale of Tony and then taking the scale of Coco and figuring out small that one's far away
[662.9] Jack: The distance that Tony done and in scaling it to the distance that Coco done so
[673.3] Jack: What would Tony have to do?
[681.14] Jack: To make up for the Coco running the amount that she did
[687.86] Tony: Like every day she ran eight eight hours a day for four days Wow
[693.06] Jack: I
[697.26] Tony: Know
[699.66] Tony: Nasty on the face balls, but everyone does don't they?
[703.82] Tony: Yeah, I was like I did raise money for the dog's trust. So bugger off
[708.58] Jack: Yeah, the dog goes into the dog's trust because you like you like no you will
[716.34] Tony: She wanted to like I towed a trailer so she could get in it
[723.06] Jack: She was no scratching to get out. So I'm so uncomfortable
[730.06] Jack: Now she was like she's in pins in there just to
[736.06] Jack: Yeah
[738.3] Tony: It's good experience. It's not often you see a dog that doesn't want to go running so
[745.74] Jack: Not for like eight days straight it was for
[749.52] Tony: It was it eight to her though, yeah, that's what I mean
[760.04] Jack: So he might you fixed my yeah, it's just I'm bothered to let you inform you
[768.64] Jack: I
[771.28] Jack: Know I'm terrible
[772.88] Tony: Mind you are flying field literally because it they've built a
[776.92] Tony: The farmers built like a hut thing in there. So people from London just turn up and then it's like Friday
[784.64] Tony: We get an email Friday. You can't you can't fly from 3 p.m.
[788.24] Tony: To your blur because someone's in the hut and then Saturday you cannot fly and then Sunday you cannot fly
[794.52] Tony: See you next week and I'm like I paid money to go and fly here and I just gets to the weekend
[800.64] Tony: I can't go they're all right cuz they're all retired and stuff. So all the old boys got they're all in the week
[807.6] Tony: I mean, I suppose I can after work cuz I'll finish
[811.92] Frank: Yeah, I was gonna say you're working day you finish it today something like that
[819.64] Stephen: That's my size
[821.8] Frank: Yes, exactly. This is late for me
[825.16] Frank: This is working you up halfway through your night, haven't we? Yeah
[830.52] Tony: But yeah, well, I'm glad it's a thick. Did you admit what you've done wrong to everyone?
[838.04] Stephen: Or we keeping that secret
[852.04] Stephen: So it was yeah, we were asking before you came on oh boy
[861.72] Frank: I thought you just left it in Jack's room for teal containing this gradually disassembled. I know I'm letting them theorize what happened
[870.84] Stephen: Well, we just thought you stuffed it up to be honest, but you know now you're pressing out
[876.12] Jack: Yeah, I mean that one it's just one below the desk chair
[881.16] Jack: It was I I had to hit the bind button
[885.0] Jack: but uh
[886.28] Jack: Someone who lives under the stairs put two
[889.48] Jack: layers of heat shrink on it and I went to cut that off
[893.32] Jack: and then the cable frayed shorted to the
[898.84] Jack: v-bat
[900.28] Jack: pad that was right next to it and then took out the uh flight controller and
[907.32] Jack: Uh chip, so I de-soldered one from it from my wing
[913.32] Jack: And soldered it back on and then
[916.6] Stephen: How did you have a cable that was frayed so badly and you like didn't notice it while you're
[920.68] Jack: Because I was yanking on it in frustration
[923.48] Jack: Trying to cut the heat shrink off
[925.48] Tony: Oh my word, I missed a good flight
[929.48] Tony: Technically it was it was just a bit rough of it, wouldn't you Jack?
[933.8] Tony: Yeah, I think that's the problem
[935.8] Frank: Yeah, just stripping heat shrink whilst it's powered. I think that sounds like what the problem was
[944.68] Jack: I know facing graphics cards whilst the system's still on
[952.6] Frank: Cheers
[957.8] Dominic: Your birthday ldo I know
[961.48] Jack: Unbelievable
[963.64] Jack: Frank you came on because it was so terrible and was like I can organize this better
[970.28] Jack: Thank you, which you did. No, it was like
[973.48] Frank: I mean you you dragged me on like for the first
[976.84] Frank: Six months of my involvement in ldo. I was just writing emails to people. That was was my entire involvement
[984.12] Frank: It was like just finding various guests and emailing them and trying to convince them to come on
[989.88] Frank: And then back like no you've got a name invited them on you've got to talk yeah
[997.64] Frank: This is not what I want to be doing
[1002.28] Jack: Frank is a true like gem of the community and I just wanted to show him off
[1009.16] Jack: and and like
[1012.28] Jack: Um, am I allowed to get sentimental? Uh, yeah, as long as you don't start
[1019.32] Koel: No crying jack. No
[1021.72] Stephen: Hang on and we stopped you if we wanted to jack it would just end up with you there
[1026.28] Stephen: Just talking to camera with tears rolling down your face
[1030.28] Jack: Cry wanky rest of us quite a bit. Yeah. Oh frank posted posted this
[1036.6] Jack: which then turns into
[1039.4] Frank: audio podcast jack audio podcast
[1042.76] Stephen: Frank posted a picture of some fireworks and wings
[1047.32] Jack: But who remembers mini air show back when frank used to do events
[1054.2] Jack: Look at that spinning plane
[1059.0] Jack: I don't know was it? I think so
[1062.44] Frank: I don't think it was me. It's nothing. It was you unless anne did it as well. I don't really do
[1070.44] Jack: All right, yeah if you're listening to this
[1072.68] Jack: There's uh, there's audio man dancing with uh, nipple tassels
[1079.06] Dominic: Sparklings are they sparklers on there? Yeah
[1087.08] Jack: That's pretty good
[1088.44] Jack: It's pretty good. This is all analog. So it looks like vaseline all over your screen
[1093.4] Jack: So you're not really if you listen to this orderly, you're not really missing out. I couldn't keep up with those my batteries were shot by then
[1100.04] Jack: Oh, he's moved on. All right, so
[1107.4] Jack: I mean frank looks 12
[1114.36] Jack: Man in the room that actually paid money for his haircut instead of doing it himself as nj
[1118.68] Jack: Yeah, I mean I look like I have been chewing on cables all day
[1124.12] Jack: Because you were between chewing
[1130.44] Tony: Was that 2019?
[1132.76] Tony: Yeah, really
[1134.44] Tony: That's not even long ago
[1136.12] Stephen: Oh god, that's just the other day
[1138.36] Stephen: Yeah, this was before it became very difficult and complex to organize little
[1143.64] Frank: Yeah
[1144.84] Frank: I've been doing some paperwork for mini airshow recently because uh, there was still some money in its paypal accounts
[1151.72] Frank: but it all got locked because of
[1153.88] Frank: Various rules so i've been trying to unlock it to pay the web posts
[1158.6] Dominic: Yeah top top tip for the day never leave any money ever in a paypal account. No, I know but it's
[1165.4] Frank: It means it's it's the event
[1167.64] Frank: It's the you know
[1169.4] Dominic: To take it out put it somewhere else and then put it somewhere and put it somewhere back afterwards, you know
[1175.0] Jack: The the money was merely resting in my account
[1178.84] Jack: Yeah
[1180.68] Tony: So oh great. Yep. Look at that lovely scribbly. Let's try it out
[1186.6] Jack: I know that's great. Isn't it?
[1189.48] Stephen: The table well loads of planes flying around here
[1193.4] Jack: Old uh, lurgy turned that into a wing
[1197.56] Jack: What that that?
[1198.92] Jack: The old yo thing. Yeah, i've seen it. It's actually a flyable wing
[1204.28] Jack: That just makes it even better I know
[1208.52] Stephen: Oh red arrows look at that smoke there as well. Very nice very nice. Oh
[1214.04] Stephen: Who's flying the smoke there?
[1217.24] Stephen: That'd be the mwm warbirds
[1220.2] Jack: Sorry frank. I just slapped frank frank
[1226.28] Jack: If you ever do another mini air show I will let you slap me
[1230.84] Jack: It's only fair
[1233.48] Dominic: I'll do it for you. It would increase the viewer down dramatically
[1238.54] Stephen: No, i've already got a chance to get to the front of the queue you realize it should be the title of the next one
[1244.62] Dominic: It's like jack get slapped by frank
[1252.06] Jack: Deadly this is this is a red hot sparkler attached like a little woot plane
[1256.78] Jack: So if that goes in your eye, not only you're getting stabbed you're also getting like third degree burns
[1262.62] Jack: At least it won't get affected
[1264.46] Jack: Yeah, and you'll be on fire. There's frank
[1267.42] Jack: And these are the retro breaks setting fire
[1271.26] Stephen: To a drone with fireworks
[1274.06] Jack: You're not supposed to do this
[1277.58] Jack: Haven't done another mini air show because I violate every
[1281.5] Jack: sort of insurance term
[1283.66] Frank: As long as you do it when it's dark and all the public have gone home
[1286.46] Stephen: It's fine. I've talked to a couple of clubs and they didn't they said if you fly after dark
[1291.18] Stephen: It's better if you do it with lights on so I think actually that's uh, it's probably
[1295.66] Stephen: It's safer, yeah
[1297.66] Dominic: Safer to do it. Yeah, the spots can see it. You know, like how would they do it?
[1301.1] Dominic: You know
[1301.9] Stephen: The lights have got to be visible from quite a distance
[1303.98] Stephen: So just piddling around with little leds doesn't really cut it
[1307.18] Stephen: I think if you if you want to do it properly something like a red band candle is going to help
[1311.66] Dominic: Yeah, totally. Yeah
[1313.82] Frank: Yeah for people that sort of don't know the history there. So
[1317.18] Frank: uh, mini air show
[1319.58] Frank: was
[1320.94] Frank: Started so started first started before ldo ldo was actually started so that mini air show would have be able to kind of recruit
[1330.52] Frank: Commentators throughout the year to then go along to the mini air show event and do the commentating
[1336.06] Frank: Which has happened. I think once that we've successfully commentated the mini air show events using ldo people
[1344.3] Jack: Yeah, we all swear too much and say inappropriate stuff
[1348.38] Frank: Yeah, and they're too busy like finding other things to do getting interested in like flying and stuff and not so interested in the talking
[1356.14] Frank: Uh, but there we go
[1358.22] Frank: Uh, sorry for both fun projects
[1361.34] Frank: Uh, bm and the air show has brought it back
[1365.58] Frank: Yeah, I know
[1366.78] Frank: but
[1368.06] Frank: it's fine like
[1370.78] Frank: I'm thinking about it, but I need lots of people to tell me I need to do it again
[1375.74] Stephen: Uh, everyone
[1381.98] Stephen: So i'm i'm working currently at this little software company and my boss has
[1386.62] Stephen: Done a bit of work doing kind of events organizing. He's also got a lot of paperwork, but
[1391.98] Stephen: I think there might be a couple of tricks you can do to like, you know set up a company without it being a massive amount
[1397.02] Stephen: of paperwork
[1398.22] Stephen: Perhaps you could borrow a few ideas
[1400.86] Frank: Uh, but it was just
[1402.46] Frank: Sorting out paypal stuff. This is fine. The the the biggest trouble with
[1407.82] Frank: Mini air show is finding somewhere that will let us do it. That is always the trick too many nimbies
[1415.66] Frank: Uh, yes, so we started off at the uh
[1419.98] Frank: hidden valley site
[1421.98] Frank: Well across between the hidden valley site and a local primary school. I think they had a sports center and we were using their sports field
[1429.42] Frank: uh
[1430.22] Frank: And then we had we sort of went full on hidden valley and then the local retired mp or something
[1436.86] Frank: Had a go at us or go at the hidden valley. So
[1440.7] Frank: Couldn't use that site anymore. I didn't have to go exactly. I mean there's it's hard for anyone to see or hear or
[1447.34] Stephen: Get anywhere near
[1448.7] Frank: uh
[1449.34] Frank: Because they walk their dog through it
[1451.74] Frank: Uh, and it's known for its peace and tranquility and we were spoiling the peace and tranquility
[1458.14] Stephen: Isn't it private land though?
[1460.14] Frank: Uh, well, the problem is it's uh, lease is rented from the council
[1464.46] Frank: So the council only so we were at risk of getting the farmer evicted. So
[1471.02] Dominic: But for 2024 you can just go don't worry everybody's going to be running toroidal props
[1480.62] Koel: It's fine
[1482.46] Koel: I still call them hemorrhoidal props
[1484.86] Stephen: I just just tell them that you're putting on like some kind of
[1488.86] Stephen: techno outdoor festival instead in which okay, so they'll probably just approve it and think it's
[1494.78] Frank: To be honest, that was why the farmer liked us being down there so much
[1497.98] Frank: Just because we we stopped all the the raves turning up then have to clean up after whereas he didn't have to clean up after us
[1505.9] Dominic: Yeah, just a couple of bits of foam for the wings crash in the occasional property, isn't it? Yeah
[1510.86] Frank: Yeah, we're pretty good at litter picking
[1513.74] Frank: We're pretty good at that which pop him also said
[1516.62] Frank: Uh that after our event they were they were quite happy with how we well, we did the list picking that uh,
[1522.14] Jack: It's just a line of people that just like
[1525.48] Jack: Munched it's crazy. I've never seen anything like that
[1528.94] Stephen: I did have a dog walker talk to me just today and say oh
[1531.98] Stephen: There's these people flying a drone in the park and the way he described it
[1535.26] Stephen: Yeah, they were flying some camera drone around or just flying it over people like absolute
[1540.54] Stephen: Not thinking about what they were doing
[1542.94] Stephen: And I talked to him before and i'm pretty sure this is the guy who like cussed me out
[1546.54] Stephen: But I was flying like this
[1548.7] Stephen: 100 gram drone with my operator idea on it and staying away from him and his dog was chasing me around and I asked him
[1554.62] Stephen: If he could grab his dog so the dog didn't eat it when it landed
[1559.66] Stephen: But yeah, I think when you have a dialogue with people like that and they're calm and not calling you a c-word and telling you
[1566.06] Stephen: to go and die
[1567.74] Stephen: When those circumstances sort of transpire they can actually be quite understanding
[1572.54] Stephen: um, and and you know
[1574.54] Stephen: It's refreshing. I think they see someone who understands there is some legislation out there and is seeking to honor it. But yeah
[1581.66] Stephen: It's voluntary to go and put a sticker on there and it's voluntary to go and register the fact that you're flying this thing then
[1588.3] Stephen: You know
[1589.34] Stephen: What's the point?
[1592.06] Dominic: Yeah with dogs, you know with if you're trying to land the drone
[1595.82] Dominic: um
[1596.86] Dominic: Don't say because I don't want I don't want your dog to eat my drone is you have to say
[1601.66] Dominic: Because I don't want your dog to get harmed accidentally. Yeah, that's what I said. I don't want him to accidentally
[1607.42] Stephen: You have to frame it one the right way around. Yeah. Yeah. I said i'm looking after you
[1611.82] Stephen: Yeah
[1616.22] Stephen: I think it might be a different guy
[1618.3] Koel: Yeah, what i've learned about flying around dogs
[1620.22] Koel: Well this one day I was just in the park and there was a lady with like five dogs just running free
[1625.02] Koel: And she was actually she was loving the drone though because the dogs were actually chasing my drone
[1629.42] Koel: So my drone was actually a play toy for them. Well
[1633.34] Koel: Pro tip if you have dogs chasing your drone
[1636.54] Koel: Fly really far away from yourself. So the dogs chase you then fly really fast back to yourself and land quickly before the dog
[1647.5] Dominic: I've been there like a thousand times like flying at hamster heath when I used to fly there when I lived back in london
[1653.26] Dominic: Yeah, it's like oh my god. Oh, we got it. We got it. We got a runner. We've got a runner
[1658.38] Dominic: Send it away hover wait till he gets underneath it
[1664.94] Koel: You have to sort of sike them out a bit and like yeah
[1668.7] Stephen: You gotta be on it when you publish there's a few people with greyhounds around here and collies
[1674.46] Stephen: That fast they are
[1676.14] Stephen: I'm not flying a five-inch guys. I'm flying like a two and a half inch or three inch. I can go like flat out and i'm like
[1683.66] Koel: It's real
[1689.66] Jack: Do you remember andy rc had to do that and
[1693.26] Jack: Sent it away sent it back
[1695.58] Jack: Uh, and there were the two damnations, but they just he landed unplugged it
[1700.78] Jack: But they just kept running at him and just went through him
[1705.26] Jack: I don't know whether he's ever told that story, but that was he had some real bad bruising just swept. Yeah
[1712.38] Dominic: Really
[1714.38] Jack: As well, like he was just
[1716.7] Stephen: Our little dog likes to play with those whippets and my wife's got bruises on her shins because they don't like
[1722.46] Stephen: Run around her. They just run into her legs when they're trying to chase our dog
[1727.82] Stephen: Yeah, not smart
[1729.34] Stephen: Um, but there's this one dog which is like a husky and is really really lazy
[1733.34] Stephen: And i've had its owner come up to me and asked me if I could fly around in circles to exercise their
[1739.1] Dominic: dog
[1742.3] Dominic: This is the most exercise my dogs had in in certain number here years
[1747.66] Dominic: They've got balls they've got all sorts of throwing toys the dogs
[1753.98] Dominic: Get a drone out
[1757.26] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only
[1763.98] Frank: Censored to please the itunes people hosted on the internet forwarded through to your podcast provider
[1768.78] Frank: Downloaded playing on your device and is now playing in your ears all thanks to our patreons
[1774.54] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits find out more at patreon.com
[1781.02] Frank: Let's drone out
[1783.5] Stephen: Sites in south wales. Oh, we shall have to investigate 404 fpv. Well i'm going to another one
[1789.5] Frank: Uh, thanks to 404 fpv
[1791.98] Frank: Uh tomorrow evening i'll be heading there
[1795.42] Frank: Oh, you're heading to wales aren't you? I am heading to wales again much to jack's disgust
[1802.7] Tony: Oh, yeah, you get za cut there
[1805.1] Dominic: I want to go to wales. It looks beautiful out there
[1807.66] Dominic: I've got to go to wales in
[1809.72] Tony: october november, I think yeah, I want to go there, but I want to take me back
[1815.9] Stephen: From drone droids commenting that it's better with rc cars. I can't help but notice drone droids got some cool little rover on the picture there
[1823.58] Frank: That is a cool little camera on there
[1826.22] Frank: Looks like a mars rover. Yeah
[1830.38] Frank: I can tell it's it is an rc thing with an old pro pro snack on I got one of my rc cars out today
[1839.42] Tony: Your rc cars or rc
[1844.94] Dominic: Yeah, that one actually worked not like the other ones in the garage
[1848.94] Dominic: Those are rc cars not rc cars
[1852.22] Dominic: Hey, here we go. Let me show you it. It's it's tiny
[1855.42] Dominic: It is quite amusing though. Look I can I can I can drive it now actually on the show. Here we go
[1859.74] Dominic: Is that a mouthful for oh?
[1861.9] Dominic: Oh, it's like the ones curry was reviewing. Oh nice. It's a little mini mini one. Yeah, and show it again
[1867.1] Stephen: I'll show you
[1868.94] Stephen: so this is like one of those
[1870.94] Stephen: Dom is showing us one of these little snt cars. I think uh, oh
[1874.78] Stephen: Oh is it diatone one diatone? I think they rebadged them didn't they? Yeah, curry's been reviewed a lot of those
[1883.74] Dominic: Yeah, diatone sent me this along with some other bits and bobs a
[1887.5] Dominic: A while ago
[1888.94] Dominic: It's quite funny when you got a marble floor
[1892.3] Stephen: Marble floor drifty. I imagine with the marble floor then it it uh
[1897.42] Dominic: understeers
[1899.5] Dominic: badly on the power
[1901.5] Dominic: That's it
[1902.78] Dominic: Uh, it would if I had one
[1905.1] Stephen: So those run flysky as well. So you could like just bind them to a regular radio
[1909.5] Dominic: Oh, I have no idea what radio pro colleague uses. I was I was giving it a plugged it in
[1915.5] Dominic: I drive it around a bit occasionally
[1917.98] Dominic: I drove it around today with a RC car circle of success when I got some code working. I'm like, yes
[1923.74] Dominic: Let's try the little car
[1927.1] Stephen: My little reward
[1929.18] Stephen: We tried the fpv one
[1931.9] Dominic: I'm not I thought I was hoping that this was going to be the fpv because they make an fpv on the same size as this
[1937.42] Dominic: um
[1938.3] Dominic: But they they cheeped out and sent me the uh, the standard one
[1945.98] Stephen: Roll if that's any consolation to roll
[1949.58] Stephen: Yeah, because the camera just bolts on top of the car
[1953.02] Stephen: Oh
[1955.42] Dominic: Top way yeah
[1958.78] Jack: No, that's gutting grumpy fire
[1962.14] Jack: um, I bought a drift car spent nearly a thousand and the the club I was going
[1968.3] Jack: To is shutting down mate. I'm so sorry
[1972.78] Dominic: That's what stopped me with the RC car stuff. I I used to race the one fifth, uh petrol cars
[1980.46] Dominic: Um down at crystal palace in london
[1983.82] Dominic: Uh, that that was epic that was I don't know whether you guys have ever been to like a one fifth scale like gasoline
[1989.9] Dominic: Um petrol powered so those were RC car rates long they're pretty big
[1995.18] Dominic: Yeah, two and a half foot long those things. Oh, yeah
[1997.58] Dominic: um
[1998.7] Dominic: And they're about 23 to 30 cc or so more or less and they both run tuned pipes and stuff
[2005.42] Dominic: If you've ever heard like eight of those start line, oh my god
[2009.42] Dominic: It's amazing. Absolutely. I mean they're like yes
[2012.38] Dominic: Let's go
[2013.66] Dominic: It's brilliant. So much fun. Loved it
[2017.42] Tony: We've just got a little RC
[2019.9] Tony: place, um
[2021.02] Tony: The arm where I play airsoft. Some days they've just opened up a little track
[2025.98] Tony: I don't know when they play or after we'll play or drive on them
[2030.14] Dominic: All right. I might have to go I did somewhere to run
[2033.34] Dominic: scale RC cars
[2035.4] Dominic: especially the noisy petrol ones
[2038.54] Dominic: Forget about it people like oh, we don't want drones
[2041.82] Dominic: Trying to trying to find somewhere to run bit scale
[2044.7] Dominic: Very loud
[2046.22] Dominic: Is a similar similar problem
[2049.34] Stephen: There was a guy in the park
[2050.46] Stephen: I saw a while ago had one of those big armor RC cars like the big bashes that are like all plastic and designed to bend
[2058.7] Stephen: And that thing was it was just humongous. Like I had a tiny little like
[2063.58] Stephen: 14th or 12th scale and this thing was just absolutely dwarfed it but
[2068.3] Stephen: It's stupid because it takes like took like 25 50 meters to get up to speed
[2073.42] Stephen: So we needed like the run of the entire park and if you know someone's dog or a toddler
[2079.42] Stephen: Pasted it was on grass like fairly long grass
[2084.94] Stephen: Anyway, yeah RC cars nice
[2086.62] Stephen: But it was one of those things where every time I I drove them stuff would just break and then uh,
[2092.06] Stephen: I wouldn't know what spares to get so a lot of my RC car stuff was waiting for spares to arrive
[2096.94] Dominic: That was my experience with helicopters
[2100.92] Dominic: It's more time wrenching than flying
[2105.24] Dominic: Those the RC cars
[2107.24] Dominic: It depends on the brand you get it's the same with a lot of stuff
[2111.0] Dominic: But um i've and it even within a brand you can get some brands that uh are more durable
[2118.04] Dominic: Um, and they might have one car in their lineup or whatever. That's just more durable than all the other ones
[2123.88] Dominic: So the Traxxas Revo amazing absolutely brilliant thing that thing is a couple of weak points on it
[2128.76] Dominic: You fix the weak points you replace them with like some aftermarket parts and then they're just their bulletproof basings are
[2134.76] Dominic: Whereas you get another car from the same Traxxas lineup and it just like destroys itself if you think about it
[2140.2] Dominic: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's really weird. It's the design of the Revo is
[2145.0] Dominic: Even today there hasn't been in my mind a better um RC truck ever made
[2151.24] Tony: Since the Traxxas Revo the design of it is just fantastic. Well, I had the 3.5. That was years ago
[2157.72] Tony: Well the Teamax or the Revo the Revo 65 mile an hour, I think
[2162.2] Dominic: Yeah, the Revo is amazing
[2164.44] Dominic: They just destroyed everybody in the races as well
[2166.76] Dominic: So they stopped having monster top races because they haven't bought a Revo and it was like oh, well, you know spec racing now
[2174.52] Stephen: That's something to be said for spec racing
[2176.6] Stephen: It just stops people so long as it's an affordable choice
[2179.4] Stephen: That's the thing if it's spec racing with some like 2000 pound monster, maybe not but if it's like affordable
[2185.56] Dominic: No, why not the sort of part of the fun with with the monotonic race is everybody brought something different, you know
[2190.92] Dominic: And then it was just like oh everybody's got revos
[2193.08] Dominic: Oh, they're better than they're better than me. It's like it's not down to the car at that point
[2197.0] Dominic: It's down to the down to the driver and sell whereas before, you know, anybody everybody stood a chance because they're all like sort of level
[2203.48] Dominic: Heck, you know
[2205.24] Dominic: But the Revo's changed everything constantly
[2207.8] Frank: It's interesting, isn't it? I don't think we've we've ever really got to the point with either
[2213.48] Frank: uh with mini quads or
[2215.88] Frank: Definitely not with wings where there is kind of enough for the market kind of solidifies around one thing
[2222.68] Frank: I mean the closest we have with the the tiny trainer
[2225.88] Frank: uh, that seems like
[2228.12] Stephen: Street leaks come up recently
[2230.2] Stephen: But they've done it through software rather than forcing people to buy the same platform
[2234.36] Stephen: Because a lot of the whoop races they were saying oh you you've got to buy
[2238.1] Stephen: 19,000 kv motors and all that really did was show up the fact that some manufacturers 19,000 kv motors were more like
[2245.86] Stephen: 23,000
[2249.24] Stephen: Yeah, so if you do any limitation you need to like have telemetry throughout everything and basically make sure the speed at the wheel
[2255.88] Stephen: Or prop or whatever is the same as everyone else and then everyone uses the same props and and it's equal
[2262.68] Dominic: Yeah
[2263.08] Dominic: Yeah, you can have like tech to check that kind of stuff if you've got rpm feedback remote and so on like check
[2270.12] Stephen: rpm limit yeah
[2271.56] Stephen: Yeah, and then we've got like a boost mode apparently i've heard so the street league people because they're doing rpm limiting by default
[2278.76] Stephen: They have a switch that gives them like a mario kart style speed boost. They can use a couple of times
[2286.12] Dominic: Yeah
[2287.48] Dominic: I've been thinking about that kind of stuff for a long time where you know, like wipe out on the playstation
[2292.68] Dominic: I always keep coming back to this with the drone stuff
[2299.08] Dominic: Yeah, um
[2300.04] Dominic: You just like you go over go over go through this gate and now you're in joker lap or and you go and then you get
[2304.84] Dominic: A speed boost on the next lap when you go through a particular gate and if you have a transponder stuff set up in the right place
[2310.28] Dominic: And you can you can trigger all that in software
[2312.68] Frank: Gary did something like that. Yeah
[2315.08] Frank: Binary throttle racing system. Yeah
[2317.4] Frank: That all had that kind of stuff. That was that was good fun. That was very entertaining
[2321.32] Tony: Yeah, go for it was all tiny book stuff when it so you go through a gate and it would switch a fan on which would
[2327.56] Tony: either blow you fast or
[2329.64] Tony: Or blow you off the track
[2332.2] Dominic: so using sort of
[2334.44] Dominic: Track side assistance rather than on the drone interesting. Yeah, same effect there, I guess. Yeah
[2341.16] Frank: Very cool
[2343.24] Frank: I can imagine that would be fun
[2347.24] Frank: Had all the like nerf guns and things
[2351.16] Frank: That was good
[2352.12] Stephen: That was like sbv combat crossed over that could be pretty amusing. I think he has got a video binary if there is
[2359.0] Tony: Yeah, it'll be a real
[2360.12] Frank: binary throttle racing system
[2363.4] Tony: I think someone was trying to copy it or something
[2367.08] Jack: I've got a video of kelsey fbv
[2370.6] Jack: Um using the nerf machine gun and just shooting
[2375.24] Jack: binary
[2376.44] Jack: in the face
[2377.64] Jack: Which is quite funny
[2380.12] Jack: Just there just like whole like
[2383.56] Jack: you know, uh magazine of
[2386.52] Jack: And he's just like
[2391.48] Dominic: I've got a nerf gun. It's but it's it's not a gun though
[2395.16] Dominic: This is how this is how this is how cool I was when I was back into nerf stuff
[2398.76] Dominic: Everyone else is buying nerf guns. I bought a nerf crossbow
[2404.92] Dominic: Because you know a nerf crossbow come on why why would you not have a nerf crossbow you still got it
[2410.92] Dominic: I've still got you see the garage. Yeah
[2413.0] Stephen: I can't get it very easily right now. It reminds me of some of the esc stuff. I've seen people talked about
[2418.28] Stephen: about
[2419.64] Stephen: Taking like blhally 32 another escs and using them to upgrade nerf weapons
[2425.46] Stephen: Interesting. Yeah
[2427.48] Stephen: And don't use bi for it though
[2430.76] Dominic: Am 32 or your escape? No, not am 32 the escape 32 thing. Yeah, isn't it with the higher torque?
[2439.72] Stephen: So he's he's obsessed with smooth startup because it came out of building
[2444.68] Stephen: Hydraulic pump motors, right?
[2447.0] Stephen: Yes, right the entire escape 32 project was created by a guy who has a fleet of tiny
[2453.32] Stephen: Rc construction vehicles and to run those he's doing scale hydraulics and he wants his still hydraulics to smoothly actuate instead of go
[2462.68] Stephen: And apparently all the bill heli 32 stuff at startup
[2466.2] Stephen: It was always jumping and he couldn't fix it and he looked at am 32 code base and you know right now
[2471.88] Stephen: There's there's a guy unit who's working with
[2474.92] Stephen: With alka and they're trying to get the code base to somewhere where it's all kind of unified
[2479.4] Stephen: But right now it's it's kind of hard to do prs against but you know
[2484.52] Stephen: It's making progress and this guy was like no i'm not waiting and he he looks to have just uh
[2488.76] Stephen: Gone his own way and written it from scratch, right? It's very different
[2492.36] Dominic: I don't know whether you guys have looked into the code. I mean i've had like video chats and stuff with guy
[2497.4] Dominic: um, very interesting, um
[2499.64] Dominic: But am 32 is more
[2503.22] Dominic: Portable. It's probably the way to describe it
[2506.36] Dominic: And more understandable by someone who has no idea how an esc system works like myself
[2513.32] Stephen: Yeah, we've kind of got a target definition. So he's abstracted
[2517.16] Dominic: not
[2518.28] Dominic: Not so much the target stuff. I mean they all have sort of target definitions and so on but it's like
[2523.08] Dominic: It's commutating the motor. It's turning this on it's turning that on you can look at the code read it
[2528.76] Dominic: in english words
[2530.6] Dominic: Right and see what it's sort of doing to get sort of a feel for how how
[2534.84] Dominic: The system works, but if you were to look at the escape 32 code, you'd be like
[2540.2] Dominic: It's magic
[2542.44] Dominic: It's totally matter. How does it work? What's it doing?
[2545.96] Dominic: And to understand the code you have to know the inside out back to front top to bottom recite it in your sleep
[2553.72] Dominic: Reference manual the stm32 and other similar processes
[2558.68] Dominic: Programming manuals and reference manual you understand how the hardware works and why it is you're setting this one bit this way
[2566.68] Dominic: At this time
[2568.12] Dominic: You're like
[2570.81] Dominic: It's it's unintelligible
[2572.89] Dominic: um
[2574.33] Dominic: In terms of its understandability
[2577.93] Dominic: The escape 32 stuff is but on the other side of things it's super low level
[2583.13] Dominic: Gets the hardware to do loads of stuff
[2585.53] Dominic: and
[2586.89] Dominic: It's a lot better in its to its usage of the hardware
[2590.01] Dominic: So it's it's very interesting the different approaches that people are taking
[2595.37] Frank: Presumably that means that you know if a new
[2600.17] Frank: Set of esc's come out. It's going to be a lot harder to actually yes because
[2605.77] Dominic: Instead of having lots of sort of common code, which isn't banging the hardware directly all the time. You've got to write
[2611.45] Dominic: Basically the entire system again for a new set of hardware peripherals that you've got
[2617.77] Dominic: And there's not much common code between different
[2622.41] Dominic: different architectures with regards to
[2625.61] Dominic: How they use the timers and all that kind of thing. Yeah, it's
[2629.61] Dominic: It's it's a lot more work to bring on a new
[2632.25] Dominic: new processor
[2634.25] Frank: Jack's just winding up curry who we've seen in the chat. So he's had many cocktails might be a bit this
[2641.69] Frank: So jack is currently
[2644.55] Frank: unwrapping a kick
[2647.93] Frank: Not fighting it straight down the middle
[2651.93] Frank: From both ends without breaking it suck some tea through it jack
[2655.85] Frank: Is
[2658.97] Frank: Spicing a bus take a bite out of each side of this
[2662.49] Dominic: What's that biscuit the Australians they they chew a corner off and then they chew the opposite corner off
[2667.13] Dominic: They put it in their tea and then they suck their tea or coffee through the biscuit. Yeah, it sounds great
[2673.37] Dominic: I don't know what the name of the biscuit is. I heard of it. I can't remember which one it is
[2677.53] Dominic: But you could probably do that with a kit kat
[2681.29] Dominic: Was that tim tam
[2683.93] Tony: Might be something like that. Yeah tim tam slam. Yeah
[2689.85] Tony: Right i'm gonna google that like oh
[2695.37] Tony: Top tip you heard it here first
[2697.77] Frank: I thought they're sort of the ones that were basically penguins. No
[2701.53] Dominic: Yes, I think they're similar to penguins. Yes. Yes. I think I had a conversation with the
[2706.89] Dominic: With who was it? Yeah my um
[2709.85] Dominic: I think it was a flatmate. Yeah, he was a flatmate. That was australian
[2712.65] Dominic: That's where I heard it from. Yeah, i'm like, yeah, you could probably do that with a penguin
[2718.49] Dominic: Conversation down the pub, you know
[2722.65] Frank: Yeah a few points later on your way home grabbing a packet of uh penguins
[2728.97] Frank: Box of tea bags. There we go. Oh, yeah the rest of your night sorted
[2736.01] Tony: It's nothing like dunking a rich tea or a digestive into your tea, you know, is it
[2741.69] Dominic: Um, who remembers, um, breakaway biscuits breakaway. Yeah, I do. Yeah, they're amazing
[2748.41] Tony: They will take away my breakaway. Yes, he knows it
[2754.73] Dominic: There's a map on battlefield called breakaway and every time it comes on i'm like into the discord thing don't take away
[2761.61] Dominic: I'm hoping for someone to finish my sentence, but no one ever does
[2764.57] Dominic: I would have
[2768.41] Jack: I don't think he's old or anything. Sophie got a star a a a by the way. So congratulations Sophie
[2775.85] Frank: congratulations Sophie
[2780.04] Frank: Yeah, all the clapping on the applause
[2782.6] Frank: Uh, I see d in the chat asking who's ripping drones this weekend
[2788.04] Frank: uh, i'm going and flying wings at the
[2792.44] Frank: command and the fence of the wrl wing racing league uk
[2797.0] Frank: uh, which is why me and 404 were having a chat about things earlier because
[2802.2] Frank: 404 is running the event this weekend. Nice. I'm gonna buy this again
[2808.44] Dominic: Ooh
[2809.72] Dominic: The old girl super old school, but it's great. I fixed it today with it with a
[2815.8] Dominic: A cobra motor that's been sat in a box for like six years or something
[2818.92] Tony: But it's got an h7 in there now. It's got an h7 in there now. It's fine
[2824.76] Frank: And what was the frame it looked like it said mr to me but uh, no, it's um a mantis
[2831.48] Dominic: I think it's a mantis m1
[2835.24] Dominic: Something like that
[2837.8] Dominic: It's like a double stack bottom plate thing in the esc's are sandwiched in the middle here
[2843.48] Dominic: Yeah
[2845.4] Dominic: And then the battery sits in here very nicely protected against all the spanish rocks
[2850.68] Dominic: That you might accidentally land on so it doesn't stick on top. It doesn't stick on bottom
[2854.84] Dominic: It goes in the middle at the back, which is great out here in spain
[2858.44] Frank: I may or may not still have a pile of parts
[2861.64] Frank: That started out as a drone that I flew in spain. So yeah, I understand that problem
[2867.48] Dominic: Yeah, it's got like five or six mil carbon arms or something and it just takes a beating every time the only thing you have to fix
[2873.72] Dominic: on it
[2874.76] Dominic: is
[2875.96] Dominic: Replacing the bolts that hold the arms in after you crash it and shear them off
[2881.88] Dominic: Wow
[2883.08] Dominic: But it's yeah, I haven't broken anything on it other other than the other than the bolts
[2887.16] Dominic: So you take some spares with you
[2889.56] Dominic: You're good
[2891.08] Frank: Richard boric in the chat says next weekend is fbv drone fest. Anyone's going to that
[2898.52] Frank: Yeah, go go boys
[2900.52] Dominic: Where is that this year?
[2903.91] Stephen: Near Coventry everyone's a lot. Yeah, it's near Coventry a time. I spent a lot of time around Coventry as a student
[2911.19] Stephen: And i'm yeah excited that I might wait till it's somewhere else
[2914.87] Stephen: Yeah
[2917.99] Frank: Lest you come into contact with memories you'd rather forget yeah Coventry or whales
[2927.19] Stephen: And I think also it's like 15 minutes from the main road down it's a long way down a little track
[2933.19] Stephen: So it looks like they've got much better facilities, but you're not going to be able to pop off the shop
[2937.99] Stephen: But you know, I think it's still a fantastic idea and I wish them all the best of luck
[2942.15] Stephen: Yeah, i'm just flaking on this because i'm i'm i'm too much of a woolly softie who needs his creature comforts
[2950.63] Dominic: I was going to say having it a little bit further away
[2953.51] Dominic: It's probably a good thing because then it keeps everybody together and there's more sort of like
[2958.47] Dominic: Interaction with everybody else if you haven't got something with you, you're going to talk to someone else
[2962.15] Dominic: Oh, have you got one of these?
[2963.83] Dominic: Whereas if the shops are just down the road, you know people
[2967.11] Dominic: They wander off come back and so on again
[2970.07] Dominic: I think it's a bit of vibe when it when it is sort of more isolated. Yeah, sort of like all weekend kind of things
[2977.38] Stephen: Oh, yeah, it just meant camping and uh
[2981.94] Stephen: Doesn't do camping
[2984.18] Stephen: Well, I have just got the wrong test you just got the wrong tent i've been to music festivals when I was much younger
[2989.7] Stephen: I just didn't really feel like camping
[2992.18] Stephen: It's been so unpredictable. We've had a very wet summer and it's just been like is it going to be nice?
[2997.14] Dominic: Or is it just gonna you need me to move to a different country if you want predictable weather you're living in a wrong country
[3003.7] Stephen: I really do think I should move to another country because I have all all the requirements to
[3008.66] Stephen: Disappear to spain but unfortunately, you know various uh leading idiots in this country decided to
[3017.46] Dominic: Yeah, fortunately I got out there just in time oh my god
[3020.82] Dominic: Yeah
[3022.82] Dominic: Yeah, no, it's not more difficult now with the whole bracket thing
[3025.86] Dominic: I imagine it's probably the same in any other european country as well
[3030.02] Dominic: But uh, yeah nightmare. So are you gonna get worse?
[3033.38] Dominic: Yeah
[3039.94] Stephen: Thankfully we've got a break in the fpv and rc legislation because it's taking them a while to do
[3046.58] Stephen: control f and replace
[3049.22] Stephen: EU with uk and all of the law
[3051.54] Stephen: And they decided to have a big, you know moan about it instead of actually being decisive. So you never know
[3059.96] Dominic: I didn't see that that situation coming at all. No
[3070.12] Stephen: Execution on some of the exemptions that were granted to allow us to fly our own stuff
[3075.32] Stephen: Although it's still a really odd thing going forward because there seems to be
[3078.76] Stephen: Almost no provision for people to actually build their own equipment and fly it kind of presumes that everyone
[3084.12] Stephen: Goes down to their favorite high street retailer build a building your own stuff
[3088.28] Dominic: What you mean you're doing it yourself and there's no company with some money that we can go after and regulate
[3093.32] Stephen: What are you talking about?
[3095.0] Stephen: Plug your phone into it and have an app. How can you not fly out? What the
[3099.4] Stephen: How are they gonna attract you?
[3101.8] Dominic: Yeah, there's no money in that we can't make laws around
[3106.36] Dominic: No money in it
[3107.8] Frank: Oh, yeah. Well what's the point? It's like oh, you mean you'd want to do this? You have fun. What what?
[3117.08] Frank: I nearly spilled my beer then
[3120.92] Stephen: Yeah
[3124.12] Stephen: The same suspicion as people who say they're like outfit gas boilers and central heating for fun like what are you doing?
[3130.76] Dominic: What are you doing? I don't know any plumbers that do their job, don't they?
[3136.28] Dominic: Are you staying around the wrong crowd?
[3138.36] Dominic: sometimes
[3139.8] Dominic: Sometimes I've thought in the past on the plumber note when you're in a job. You're just like oh
[3146.12] Dominic: Surely there's got to be another job. That's got less
[3149.96] Dominic: In it you can edit this out natural thought
[3153.72] Dominic: And i'm like, do you know what this probably less
[3156.52] Dominic: Being a plumber than there is in this job, but it's just a different kind
[3161.56] Dominic: It's a bit more literal. Yeah
[3163.56] Dominic: Yeah, yeah
[3164.52] Stephen: We're having a discussion much the same today
[3166.36] Stephen: Like oh wouldn't the grass be greener if blah blah blah and it's almost never greener if you change it for something that has
[3173.4] Stephen: the same desired outcome because
[3176.04] Stephen: There's just going to be different problems
[3177.72] Stephen: They're not going to be exactly the same problems you're familiar with but they're going to be different and equally irritating ones
[3183.72] Stephen: And you just have to learn your way around a fresh
[3186.6] Stephen: New set of irritating problems and find the workarounds that people have been doing for the last 10 or 15 years for those problems instead
[3192.84] Stephen: Yeah
[3193.96] Stephen: That's true
[3198.2] Frank: What the work arounds an epiV then what I mean, I guess there's I mean
[3204.6] Tony: Give it to jack
[3206.28] Dominic: That's my work around
[3207.88] Dominic: We can't say the work arounds because you know
[3210.52] Dominic: We would all get in trouble for that and jack needs to have the little scholarly thing going across the farm as well
[3216.6] Stephen: But just like over engagement in online communities and chasing every little issue through multiple forums and
[3223.8] Stephen: bug reports and
[3225.56] Stephen: Doing and before you know it you're doing more test bills than you're actually flying stuff and it's just exhausting and you have to
[3232.36] Stephen: Stop stop stop. It doesn't need to be perfect. I'm just going to go fly it and it'll be an okay fly
[3238.92] Dominic: Yeah, when if you're doing like software dev it will in my experience when I was doing a lot more
[3244.84] Dominic: A lot more clean flight stuff
[3246.84] Dominic: I used to have a couple of rigs that I would take with me
[3249.32] Dominic: That are my trusted guaranteed working. I'm going to have fun with
[3253.16] Dominic: Rings and then i'm going to have a couple of other frames which i'm going to try new stuff on
[3257.96] Dominic: And then if it doesn't work fine
[3260.2] Dominic: And then i'll just use the rest of the batteries on my i'm going to have fun
[3264.68] Dominic: And then and then when you go out to somewhere and it doesn't work and you've gone all the way there which in england is a
[3270.68] Dominic: Oh, yeah, and then you get there and you're like you can't do one pack and come home again. It's like
[3277.32] Dominic: You need a couple of frames
[3280.12] Dominic: Some some guaranteed working stuff. So yeah, then
[3284.28] Dominic: And then it makes your day. All right
[3286.04] Frank: Where is the sort of development at the moment? It feels to me like
[3290.44] Frank: ELRS seems to be doing really really well in fb just sort of thinking back over previous years like elrs is kind of
[3297.32] Frank: Seems to be have expanded and been really taking over a lot of the fb world at the moment
[3303.96] Frank: Uh, there's the I mean digital side of things
[3308.76] Stephen: On our discord right frank about elrs the little note that someone put out
[3314.52] Stephen: Wes mentioned all these people are being complaining. Oh, it's yeah, it's for racers, you know
[3318.52] Stephen: Oh, it's for long ranges, but it doesn't do math lick doesn't do this
[3321.8] Stephen: They figured out a way to split the radio a single radio link in half and half the packets control link and the other half
[3329.72] Stephen: Are going to be like a serial you are so you can put your math link data down there
[3334.04] Stephen: and it does like
[3336.04] Stephen: Resends on the serial data until it actually comes out the other end
[3340.6] Stephen: So it you know, it's got stub and sender and you don't lose any serial data
[3344.84] Stephen: It just slows down the board rate and flow control can make it work. It just sounds
[3349.72] Stephen: Pretty interesting like maybe obviating some of the really expensive
[3354.28] Stephen: Airborne modem systems that used to have with that arju and so there's a lot of interesting
[3359.08] Dominic: elrs guys are really good at coming up with
[3361.7] Dominic: creative technical solutions to
[3364.98] Dominic: long established
[3367.16] Dominic: Norms shall we say?
[3369.4] Dominic: Yeah
[3370.6] Frank: All using the same hardware, which is important do tune in next week on yes
[3375.0] Stephen: Let's drone out when we will be talking to mustard tiger about the formation flight project
[3380.28] Stephen: He's going to be on here discussing how you can take a cheap tiny happy model ep1
[3386.44] Stephen: 10 pound receiver and turn it into something that lets you see
[3391.08] Stephen: Your mate's location on your heads up display when you're flying together
[3397.16] Frank: Sounds very cool
[3398.6] Stephen: It does and you can do this. I think with up to like six or eight aircraft to all um shows you
[3404.04] Stephen: Cycles through various pilots call signs and distances and heights from you
[3408.6] Stephen: And I think the integration on inav actually has dots that track across the um arc. It's on the screen
[3416.6] Dominic: I've been thinking about that stuff for ages. Yeah, so are they using the elrs like?
[3423.8] Dominic: trans
[3425.88] Dominic: the
[3427.24] Dominic: The transceiver to actually send that like on a different channel that uses laura like leon
[3431.32] Dominic: Bottom perfect the bottom two slots of the hot table. Yeah. Yeah, that's exactly
[3435.4] Stephen: I think there's an esp now option as well, but that's why so
[3440.12] Dominic: Yeah, it's perfect
[3441.88] Dominic: Because you've already got the existing hardware
[3443.16] Dominic: You don't need any other hardware
[3444.28] Dominic: You just reserve a couple of frequencies for like this does need a different receiver
[3448.12] Stephen: So you'd have your regular receiver and then you'd have a second you up the second receiver
[3452.52] Stephen: It's not sharing the same receiver, but the receivers like my idea like to
[3458.36] Dominic: Yeah, yeah, you could do it that way
[3459.8] Dominic: My idea was to basically you've got one receiver in there
[3463.08] Dominic: And every now and again you just hop onto another channel listen
[3466.6] Dominic: And then go back to your controlling stuff. So sure you wouldn't get the super high control rate that you might
[3472.52] Stephen: Want but elrs stuff is crazy. Hi. Are you there? You go stamping around ruining people's deterministic behavior don't ruin it
[3481.56] Dominic: No, no
[3483.56] Dominic: So every so often you go on you listen to like a couple of other channels
[3486.2] Dominic: Which is essentially like a telemetry channel that you listen to
[3489.72] Dominic: And then it broadcasts and each drone they periodically broadcasts on that channel
[3494.68] Dominic: Yeah, um their location and then if you happen to switch to it at the time
[3498.52] Dominic: It's broadcasting it then you get the information and because the information isn't necessarily something you need at 500
[3505.8] Dominic: It probably would work fine. So
[3507.96] Stephen: Instead of trying to fight to get that included in express solar
[3511.16] Stephen: It's done is that you can just buy another 10 quid receiver and jam it on a spare uart
[3517.24] Stephen: and it's going to be a totally separate project and
[3520.2] Stephen: We don't have to have these massive political battles and what will another there is something to be said for that
[3526.92] Stephen: Have you heard about these online screaming matches that
[3531.48] Dominic: How do they normally pan out for the developer that wants to do something cool and new
[3536.6] Stephen: I think it works out beautifully usually, isn't it?
[3539.4] Frank: Yes, that's that's the the third dimension these projects exist in is the there's the software. There's the hardware and there's the politics
[3546.92] Stephen: It needs to meet all three
[3550.44] Stephen: Anyway, so it promises to be a very interesting discussion and that's a little teaser for next week going into our
[3556.92] Dominic: Our eighth year. I have to tune into that one. I look that's that's going to be an interesting one
[3562.6] Stephen: speaking of ldo business
[3565.8] Stephen: It's probably time to go and look for the caa call for input on the uk us regulations. Um
[3572.92] Stephen: There is a link in our discord again bmfa.org if you have a look they've probably got some kind of
[3579.24] Stephen: explainer statements where they talk about
[3581.88] Stephen: The kind of tack you might want to follow with your arguments because you don't want to just turn it into a screaming match there either
[3587.8] Stephen: You want to make constructive points? And so, uh, please do go read the bmfa guidance and
[3593.72] Stephen: Enter something in the caa call for input
[3597.08] Frank: Um
[3599.08] Frank: When when the bmfa get around publishing their guidance
[3602.84] Stephen: Oh if they've had a week i'm sure they've done it by now frank. I haven't bothered to check but i'm assuming
[3607.32] Dominic: When does when does the uh the door close for submissions and responses seventh of september?
[3613.8] Dominic: So one two three weeks away bmfa better get their skates on then
[3621.24] Stephen: Their fountain pen pens and take it down the post office. So, you know, it's gonna take a while
[3627.16] Stephen: I'm writing to you sir in the strongest possible terms
[3631.56] Stephen: regarding the joy
[3633.96] Stephen: And fun that my control line aircraft brings to me
[3639.72] Stephen: Little rubber bands like tissue paper. Yeah, you can see it now
[3645.0] Tony: I've been main
[3646.68] Stephen: All right. Now those guys are actually facing the grim reality of um,
[3651.08] Stephen: pretty much anything isn't control line is is on
[3654.84] Stephen: the prospective
[3657.4] Stephen: Conspicuity list now, um, and you may or may not need to go and shove a gps that broadcasts your id
[3665.32] Stephen: Not just painting a jokey call sign on the wings, but put a gps and radio transmitter in there and broadcast it. So, um
[3673.56] Stephen: Let's see what happens. And I think there's a lot of oh, but of course model aircraft, you know planes don't need it
[3678.36] Stephen: Well, why not? They're they're heavier
[3680.68] Stephen: Um sky then it's not as quickly
[3683.0] Frank: yeah, i'll be interested to see how it ends up being applies to the
[3687.24] Frank: Free flight models like where you have like a
[3689.56] Frank: A little moment in and some tissue paper and you just kind of launch it into the sky
[3695.24] Frank: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I hope it comes down
[3698.52] Dominic: Away from other people. Uh, yeah, yeah, at least with the drone. There is some kind of control, right?
[3703.64] Dominic: You know and if we can not do that
[3705.8] Stephen: most of the statistics then the only fatalities in the hobby have been caused by
[3710.52] Stephen: planes by fixed-wing aircraft, so
[3714.28] Frank: Well and helicopters
[3716.28] Tony: And well, I think helicopters certainly had a fair degree of minor amputations. Thank you. They hurt their owners, don't they?
[3723.96] Stephen: But outright fatalities, I think the uh outright that that was uh, just some model aircraft that hit people in the head
[3731.08] Frank: but even then if you go by
[3733.8] Frank: fatalities per
[3735.64] Frank: million hours of flying like I feel it's probably
[3739.96] Frank: Parole about i'm just i'm sure
[3742.52] Dominic: Yeah, i'm just saying that people zero zero zero zero zero
[3746.36] Stephen: demonize the pelis demonize the fixed wing, but what we need to do is actually look at the statistics and decide what we're trying
[3752.76] Stephen: to protect against because
[3755.08] Stephen: As we said before if you just don't want people flying next to air airports, then um
[3760.76] Stephen: What's to stop them disabling all these measures?
[3763.08] Stephen: You should you're telling them that they must carry and then or wrapping them in tinfoil and then go flying
[3768.68] Dominic: Wrapping their little beacons. That's not that's not where all the legislation is coming from. I don't believe um
[3775.0] Dominic: In my head is it's basically coming out of a way to like monetize
[3779.32] Dominic: Companies that are trying to create things. So that's where most of the legislation comes from about most things in the world
[3787.08] Dominic: Yeah, they should be drone industry being any better to any any other industry and they say oh we're doing it for
[3793.06] Dominic: security reasons we're doing it for uh safety reasons
[3797.0] Stephen: Well, there needs to be an effective separation of us
[3809.96] Dominic: We've not had any fireworks jack
[3819.0] Dominic: So any reason I came on was to sing up something flammable
[3822.92] Jack: They're all too expensive. Yeah, frank can't order any for me
[3828.04] Frank: You've got the cards
[3830.12] Jack: Oh, yeah
[3833.08] Stephen: Stop in charge fiscal responsibility jack. It doesn't suit us
[3839.8] Stephen: That was close enough
[3841.24] Stephen: I'll take your fiscal responsibility. Thank you to our wonderful patreons for keeping the show on the air and supporting us
[3847.56] Stephen: down these eight years
[3849.72] Stephen: And hopefully we can continue going on into the future
[3853.08] Stephen: We've lost a couple of editors recently
[3855.48] Stephen: So if anyone does feel like upping their pledge
[3858.28] Stephen: That would be much appreciated to help with the editing and ongoing show costs
[3862.6] Stephen: But we're still really really grateful for everyone that contributes. Um, thank you very much
[3867.16] Stephen: And it's awesome that you guys help us keep the show on the air
[3870.84] Dominic: Don't forget to press the thumbs up button
[3873.8] Stephen: Click follow the button
[3877.08] Stephen: Just go to patreon and say thanks
[3879.32] Stephen: Yeah, because uh, we've kind of subscribed to the youtube machine jack because youtube machine doesn't want hour-long shows the youtube machine wants
[3887.88] Stephen: 10 second clips
[3891.56] Dominic: Okay, you need to watch you need to watch the spiffing brits youtube, uh hacking exploits and things like this
[3898.52] Jack: Yeah
[3900.84] Jack: The they're all you know, they're big even the youtube music
[3907.48] Frank: is is
[3908.92] Frank: Recently had a thing where it just plays you like 10 seconds of songs
[3913.16] Frank: Oh, this is this is not a good look
[3916.44] Frank: This is not how it's gonna work. They've got like a whole other like tab that's called like um clips or something
[3922.44] Frank: It's like is equivalent to shorts. Yeah, but for the music
[3926.52] Frank: This is weird
[3928.52] Stephen: concentration
[3930.52] Stephen: People nowadays
[3933.16] Stephen: Young people and on that note of us slowly devolving into the
[3938.12] Stephen: sandals brigade that we bought
[3941.88] Dominic: Devouring into old people
[3945.72] Dominic: Steven in in in like 10 or 20 years. Ah, we're gonna have some conversations about who you've told off recently
[3953.4] Frank: I told him
[3956.28] Jack: I can't wait and i'll fix i'll fix this right you and you
[3964.04] Frank: Thank you
[3968.6] Jack: You have been joined by our lord and master andres a frank bye
[3974.44] Jack: uh
[3975.64] Jack: My darling wife tony
[3977.64] Jack: Bye
[3978.92] Jack: Unmute yourself. Mr. Clean flight. Bye
[3981.72] Jack: Bye
[3982.68] Jack: And let's meet you again. Yep
[3985.08] Jack: and
[3987.16] Jack: My buddy col is so lovely to have your back mate. It's nice the seven sentences you said
[3994.04] Jack: Enjoyed it
[3995.56] Jack: Please come back next week and unmute yourself
[3998.84] Jack: Steven i'm unmuted. Thank you very much. And thanks to everyone watching us. We appreciate it
