[201.84] Jack: I watched Curry's video on the HC zero goggles.
[208.84] Jack: Very thorough. It was, too. Yes. Did you watch the follow up which came out yesterday about this?
[216.84] Curry: Did you watch the follow up which came out yesterday about the little quad?
[222.84] Curry: No. Little quad that could. Yeah.
[227.84] Curry: I think I did that on, I maybe flew that Friday. I went out down the woods with the little mob light seven, which was quite, quite powerful for one S.
[238.84] Curry: I found it quite tricky indoors. I had to bring all the throttle limit down and set a bit of a throttle curve.
[243.84] Curry: But outside in the woods, it's quite good fun. And I was interested to see how it did just by normal route of light zipping in and out of the trees.
[251.84] Curry: Nothing too heavy, but it was okay. It was like normal HC zero. Look, sparkles, to keep you amused whilst you're flying around.
[259.84] Curry: But it wasn't too heavy. And it got some pretty good results there. It got some pretty good range, I thought.
[265.84] Curry: A little, just a little S.P.I. in our receiver does a really good job these days. I remember the olden days of the S.P.I. based stuff.
[277.84] Stephen: I could just about get downstairs before we would just go. I went to the park to fly one of those S.P.I. free sky receivers and I flew behind myself, like six foot behind myself and it failed safe because I was between the radio and the quad.
[292.84] Curry: Yeah, that's happened to me before. Awful, weren't they? But yeah, they work brilliantly for these little quads, especially because if you look at the flight control, obviously it's an all-in-one flight control ESC board and stuff.
[307.84] Curry: And it's just got this tiny little HC zero thing on top. You've still got extra space, believe it or not, on that tiny quad. So the fact you can build something that small is crazy.
[319.84] Curry: That's good news. What did you think of the goggles, Jack?
[324.84] Jack: Yeah, all right. No problem. Very tempting. You know, it's nice to have everything all in in one package. Very versatile. I liked you using your microphone for the voiceover. I thought that was pretty good.
[343.84] Jack: The one thing I don't like about it is the sort of like analog, like, slipped on sort of like module. It, you know, doesn't really sort of like fit the, you know, the fat shark cover over it or whatnot.
[362.84] Jack: I kind of prefer it if it had its own, like, little enclosure for...
[367.84] Curry: Yeah, totally. It's a bit of a chunk, isn't it? It's quite funny when you put all the antennas on, though, because it's like six antennas. I just look like this weird horned thing. It's quite fun.
[381.84] Jack: Yeah, they look like they protrude quite far. I mean, I've had a go of them from Chris G. So I quite like the dioptic adjustment. It means that then you don't have to go out and get diopters unless, you know, obviously your eyesight's that bad.
[402.84] Jack: It's just hard to know what to go with, really, because, like, even if I had the money right now, I still wouldn't buy a HD, anything HD, because obviously we're now entering winter. So I won't be, you know, none of us are going to be flying.
[420.84] Stephen: The upgrade cycle on these things is still quite aggressive. So in another two years, you know, there'll be one that will kind of make you regret that decision. You know, it's not going to last forever.
[430.84] Curry: It always is. And walks now have just bought, well, bringing something out that we don't know about yet. It looks like a pair of goggles. It says October. So that's all we know, I guess.
[442.84] Jack: I just, you know, like this, this year, I think. I don't know. I think it's just been a particularly bad year. We had a late summer. Excuses, excuses.
[454.84] Jack: But, you know, I think late summer, a lot of my friends were, like, busy with, like, other things and really sort of, you know, I'm a little bit worried that, like, you know, people stopped fighting me.
[468.84] Jack: I've, you know, not sort of, like, gone out much and we as LDO haven't, like, met up. Yeah. So I don't, yeah, I don't really know where I am because, like, I met up with Frank, you know, even Frank was like, oh, I'm thinking maybe next year because we are entering winter.
[488.84] Jack: And he's like, yeah, I'll probably buy something then, you know, ready for the sort of, like, new FPV year.
[497.84] Jack: But yeah, I'm still, I'm still not 100% like sold. And also I think, oh, yeah, you can get the walk sale module and put it on the front of it. But then it's big. Yeah, it's going to be a hell of a chunker in there.
[513.84] Stephen: But that's some sort of counterweight on your head. Stop it being too heavy. You know, we've been used to kind of Skyzone and Fat Shark vendors who've been around for a number of years.
[524.84] Stephen: And the products that they put out, they're up to kind of V4, V5, all the weird little things that didn't quite work have been fixed.
[532.84] Stephen: HD zero and Walk Snail are both essentially doing V1 products. I may have got hand from Fat Shark, but they're essentially a V1 product. And so a lot of the things that people don't like are, where's my input for the Walk Snail goggles?
[548.84] Stephen: And on the HD zero goggles, like, why have I got a barnacle on the side of my goggles for an analog module everyone knew I was going to want as well as these goggles?
[558.84] Stephen: Like, why isn't it integrated? All that stuff is, it feels like it's going to be fixed in V2 or V3, but we're not quite there yet.
[565.84] Stephen: So it's kind of that early adopter pain, like, if you're buying a CD player in like the early 80s and you ended up with something that was the size of a dishwasher and like required vibration isolating feet and things.
[578.84] Stephen: You're going to have to live through a bit of that pain. If you buy digital goggles now, unless you just suck it up and buy DJI and say, take all of my money, do with it as you will, I love you DJI, you can do no wrong.
[592.84] Stephen: If you want something that isn't DJI, then you're going to have to put up with a bit of growing pain.
[598.84] Jack: Yeah, I don't really want to end up in that sort of like DJI cycle. I don't think many people do.
[607.84] Stephen: It took them ages to get from MSP Displayport. I think the HD stuff still isn't quite properly implemented. The chances of getting custom fonts, I mean, you might as well take a whiz in the wind. It's unlikely to happen.
[622.84] Curry: Yeah, do you remember the talk of Orca and their HD system? This is slightly before they got ransomware or didn't or whatever.
[633.84] Stephen: They took it to a trade show, didn't they? They had the CNC cases in a little display cases.
[639.84] Curry: It was in a little display cases, wasn't it? Because there were several types, I think, as well. It's weird.
[644.84] Curry: Well, if I'm trying to go flying tomorrow, and if I do, I will be doing analog tomorrow, just because there's still nothing wrong with it and it still works.
[653.84] Curry: And I can't be bothered to rip it out of my perfectly good plane. I want to fly tomorrow just for that.
[659.84] Jack: Did you notice any of the upstakel goodness? Because I did notice there was quite a bit of break up regarding the rapid fire in your HDOs.
[676.84] Jack: In your HDOs. That's it.
[685.84] Curry: Let's play dementia.
[690.84] Curry: What was the question again? Was it about was there a problem with break up? Was it?
[696.84] Jack: Yeah, it seemed like the DVR was really good quality, but what you were seeing was a bit different.
[706.12] Curry: No, not really. It's been really bad in the house for a good few years now since 5.8 Wi-Fi has taken off.
[715.12] Curry: Flying around the house has been increasingly dodgy and gives really bad video.
[722.12] Curry: Outside is no problem. If I fly analog outside in the same quad, I can go for yonks, but it really does hit the interference.
[731.12] Curry: I was trying all sorts of weird channels to get over it. I think that one was on like A7 or something bizarre, which I'd come up with.
[740.12] Curry: But Wi-Fi seems to work on pushing out at different times. So, oh, this is perfectly clear.
[748.12] Curry: And then suddenly you've got this whole bunch of stuff coming along and it's like, oh, that has wiped me out again.
[753.12] Curry: You can see there's those constant lines that's definitely the interference as opposed to break up.
[758.12] Curry: Yeah, it's not too quite a lot.
[761.12] Jack: Were you excited about the Raspberry Pi 5 for your open HD?
[770.12] Curry: Not especially. I took a quick look at the videos today and it seems like that's a bit better, like twice as fast as stuff.
[783.49] Curry: I didn't look perhaps hard enough to like, that doesn't have hardware H.265 decoding or encoding it.
[795.49] Stephen: Yeah, but it's all Broadcom, isn't it? And they don't document any of their stuff, so the drivers are all reverse engineered and take a really long time to appear.
[803.49] Curry: So probably not much use there. And of course, the critical side on stuff like open HD is the stuff in the air, because you can have something much more powerful on the ground, like a Linux machine quite happily.
[821.49] Curry: And that will decode things brilliantly, but it depends what's up in the air and what's encoding and sending back again to how it does it.
[829.49] Curry: So I don't think that really moves things on much. It certainly doesn't move it into the H.265 stuff that some of the other SBCs can do.
[839.49] Stephen: Did you see the SBC that Mario FPV was talking about? He's been on this open IPC kick for quite a while now.
[848.49] Stephen: And he located an all in one single board computer that did the video decode and you could connect a display directly to.
[858.49] Stephen: And these appear to be going for like 15 quid on AliExpress.
[863.49] Curry: I haven't seen that one. I saw that he put out a thing saying that the open IPC developers were looking to make a sort of all in one box that they wanted to sell.
[874.49] Curry: And we're going to shove some sort of OSD potential on there. So it looks like that thing's still moving along.
[881.49] Curry: It's certainly an interesting project that because you can get. Oh, yeah, that's pretty cool.
[887.49] Stephen: So you can tell the VGA board. Yeah, so this is the goggles end, basically.
[893.49] Stephen: It takes 12 volt power of a barrel jack, which would be familiar to lots of us. So no soldering on BEX and things.
[898.49] Stephen: It's got a SATA port. There's a VGA port. There's an HDMI out. It looks like RJ45 for ethernet and a couple of USB two ports.
[910.49] Stephen: Potentially an LVDS for an onboard TFT there as well. And the important bit is the price. It's £14.60 all up.
[921.49] Stephen: So you might need something to boot it off. That could be a USB flash drive or it could be something that goes in the SATA port.
[928.49] Stephen: Maybe there's an NVMe attachment or other kind of NV RAM. But it looks pretty good. It's a high silicon chipset.
[938.49] Stephen: It's one of these things that's designed for these all in one security systems. And it's just for playing video streams.
[944.49] Stephen: So it's got H265 plus, it says. I don't know what that means. But presumably the powerful end of H265 is supported.
[954.49] Stephen: It will render stuff up to 4K. It'll run five megabit streams, which is enough to cope with the kind of over air that OpenHD is doing, I guess.
[966.49] Stephen: Yeah, it seems pretty good. Audio compression and everything all included. Yeah, and here's the plug. So network interfaces.
[975.49] Stephen: One channel VGA output if you need that. An HDMI output. You've got your audio. A hardwired network. Two hardwired USB ports. One SATA port.
[985.49] Stephen: And 12 volt 2 amp power supply. It takes under 10 watts. So that's pulling a fair bit. It's kind of 800 milliamps at 12 volts, I guess.
[995.49] Stephen: So not too bad at all. So that could be a way to go to build a module.
[1001.74] Curry: Could be. It would be wonderful if all these interesting open source or some open source, some not.
[1009.74] Curry: OpenHD is the obvious one. OpenIPC is the other. And there's still things like Ruby, HD. All trying to do quite similar things.
[1018.74] Curry: Although OpenIPC is quite a bit more just vague, let's video stream anything. They could sort of come together and put their code in a way that's like, oh, we could moduleize and use bits here and bits there and watch your hardware and we can just instantly build the right thing for you. It'd be good.
[1039.74] Stephen: You need to turn this into a real product because unless you're a solderer and have what's maybe quite a large 3D printer and a lot of time on your hands to get it just right, you're going to be spending a while getting this together.
[1054.74] Stephen: It's going to make that whole cell module look tiny.
[1060.15] Curry: Yeah. CMOS battery.
[1063.15] Curry: Baby battery on my head, isn't that sweet?
[1065.15] Stephen: CMOS battery. It's got real time clock as well if you want to date stamp your DVR.
[1071.15] Jack: I know. VGA though. I mean, who's using VGA?
[1075.15] Stephen: Well, I mean, you could snap off the VGA. You could flatten the CMOS battery. You could rip the RJ45 off and end up with something that's a wee bit smaller.
[1083.15] Stephen: USB is probably useful to have. Obviously, the DC jack, you need the HDMI. I think with a small amount of hacking, you could get this board down to something that's a wee bit flatter and doesn't have quite so many bulky ports on it.
[1095.15] Stephen: I mean, that VGA, you've got an HDMI right there and it's positively diminutive, maybe an eighth of the size of this giant VGA port.
[1104.15] Stephen: So yeah, I just get the pair of pliers and either desolder or just Hulk out and rip it off.
[1112.07] Jack: Oh, through hole though. Good luck with hulking it off.
[1117.07] Stephen: Yeah.
[1118.07] Stephen: Look at those ground lugs.
[1121.07] Stephen: They are big lugs, aren't they? We don't like big lugs.
[1125.07] Jack: Got no chance, mate. You're better off just cutting the board with a dremel.
[1130.07] Stephen: Anyway, so if you don't mind it being a bit of a chonkster, maybe, you know, Curry was talking about having big kind of old box goggles. This is something that would, you know, maybe fit on a big old box goggle.
[1144.07] Stephen: So there's that. And at 14 quid, like, take a punt, can't you? Even if you pay that on top of that, it's under 20 quid to see what happens. I think this guy's free shipping as well.
[1156.07] Stephen: Let's go up to the top again. Yeah, 14 and free shipping estimated by October the 20th. Not too shabby. Not too shabby.
[1169.07] Jack: Has anyone used this in an aircraft though?
[1174.07] Stephen: Yeah, one of the reasons I mean, I got this link from Mario's video and he proceeded this by, you know, showing, I guess, switch into that as well.
[1185.07] Stephen: Cut the audio on this. And he was showing it with open a open IPC booting off of it. So I'm assuming that that means it works. So blah, blah, blah. Yeah, it's a board. Thank you.
[1202.07] Stephen: There's a tool. It's kind of a pain in the ass, blah, blah, blah. Plug in FTDI adapter, something, something, load something up onto and be around. I'm guessing messing around, messing around, messing around, blah, blah, blah. Yes, we can all read tutorials in our own free time.
[1219.07] Stephen: And it kind of gets to the end and he's running open IPC on it with a, you know, the video output there. So yeah, you can do it.
[1232.07] Stephen: It's usable, but you need to go the open IPC route, which means your camera has got to be one of the select few that's supported by open IPC.
[1240.07] Stephen: And that whole project is very much like Tinkertoy right now. It's not, it's not a real thing. Also notice he hasn't connected the camera. Oh, wait, what's this at the end? Oh, he has got a camera on it. There we are.
[1253.07] Stephen: So, yeah, it appears to be working. And what he's got like a three meg stream there. There's a wee bit of corruption on the stream, but it's working.
[1262.07] Stephen: He says he's going to fix the corruption now as well. It's not bad. No, and you're paying sort of 15 or 20 quid for each end of the connection, which it feels a lot more like let's go back to using old security cameras because they're available and everyone can get can afford them, you know, everyone can find somewhere that buys the DJI system, but it costs an arm the leg.
[1293.07] Stephen: It's like 10% the cost of a full DJI setup to get both ends done. It's very affordable.
[1304.51] Curry: I'm falling so far behind on like general stuff like open HD my my plan was to upgrade to the new version and upgrade I now I just haven't had time or the weather to do it.
[1320.51] Curry: And the reason I'm going out tomorrow is because I had like a review thing that I wanted to finish off.
[1327.51] Curry: But yeah, days days to fly becoming less and less. I do like flying little quads can I can just go down my local woods and crash them into trees, which is a lot easier than having to.
[1339.51] Curry: It's the weather can be good enough. Am I going to have to be able to drive to that field? Will I launch it? And will the men in the next field shout at me, scaring the people in the small flat fields?
[1348.51] Stephen: Building rinky dink stuff like this that I could just fly anywhere with a lot of walks now VTX. Although this one did fly like absolute garbage so this is getting rebuilt, and I just ordered a baby a pro V two frame, which is like a little three inch, but in the style of like a regular freestyle quad rather than this weird ultra light that has terrible residence issues.
[1371.51] Stephen: It just jiggles and oh, it's terrible. It's it's I'm running this this the sunny sky 1106 is which are notoriously like incredibly notchy and noisy, but it has been very difficult to tune.
[1386.51] Stephen: I don't really enjoy trying to fight that. So that's going to rebuild.
[1391.51] Curry: Did you manage to get out all this week? We had a half decent day Monday, and then that was it.
[1401.51] Stephen: Fingers crossed tomorrow. I can't remember. I don't think I did. I think I flew a couple of packs last week, but not this week.
[1409.51] Stephen: Being busy, busy, busy. I built the GPS in the thingy. I'm completely blank on the guy saying super fly, super fly. I finally put his frame together and I've got a GPS in it.
[1424.51] Stephen: And I've got M10 GPS units that have all arrived from Aliexpress and been sitting around and I thought, oh, well, let's all a couple of those and the hype is real guys compared to the M8 units. I'm getting a fix indoors.
[1438.51] Stephen: I'm getting like 19 satellites indoors. I used to get five at most. I got 19, which is pretty incredible. I'm quite happy with it.
[1451.51] Jack: No way. You're kidding. How much are they a piece? And are they quite big?
[1458.51] Stephen: It depends who you buy it from. You can get some of them at Aliexpress for about 10 or each. If you get the rebranded ones from HGLRC or iFlight, then you might pay 20 or 25 quid. It depends.
[1475.78] Stephen: If you look for, you remember there was a BN220 with Rettian. So they've got the same range, the same physical dimensions. So you've got the 180, the 220 and then the 880.
[1490.78] Stephen: But they've changed the letters. So the old ones would be N2180, BN220, BN880. The new ones are BE. So you've got BE180, BE220, BE880. And those are all different antenna sizes, but with a new M10 chip.
[1510.78] Stephen: And yeah, it seems to have a lot more sensitivity. So that means you're locking satellites, you're getting more of them much quicker.
[1520.78] Curry: And have you tested those with interference because digital was always quite bad for knocking GPS out?
[1530.78] Stephen: Yeah, it's just been desk tested so far. So I've got to give it a go and actually take them out. Like I said, I haven't been doing much flying outdoors, but I've got one that's very small. It's like a 12 mil antenna.
[1542.78] Stephen: So I'm going to put that on a park flyer and take that round, basically rebuild this little three inch onto that baby eight frame that I was talking about and then put a tiny GPS on that.
[1553.78] Stephen: I might even get one of these 220 models on it, but take it out and see how it fares. Unfortunately, well, I've got the great GPS is on like new five inches, which is, you know, it's getting loads of satellite. This is the one that's getting 19 sets indoors.
[1568.78] Stephen: I can't fly it like a 6S quad around my park, a 6S five inch. It's incredibly loud and incredibly dangerous and there's not much space for it.
[1579.78] Stephen: But I find another solution. I haven't really got out into the woods this year, but previous years I just disappear into the woods for half a day and go fly. I just haven't had time to do it.
[1590.78] Jack: That's kind of lit a fire under me being like, ooh, you know, with the new GPS modules because I did sort of re-sort of my INAV board for my AR wing.
[1611.78] Jack: So I might have a little cutty open and have a little bit of an upgrade.
[1619.78] Jack: It's worth a pump.
[1621.78] Jack: If it is as good as you say it is.
[1626.28] Stephen: They've definitely changed in performance because I remember struggling so hard and a lot of the time I was going to fly and use GPS and it just wouldn't get a lock.
[1635.28] Stephen: I'd just, you know, find an old battery and I'd be like, right, I landed at 3.7 and I'll plug the old battery in to this quad on my GPS and sort of wait for it to get a lock on the old battery and then warm start it on the fresh battery fly.
[1650.28] Stephen: And it would just sit there for like five minutes doing absolutely FA.
[1658.28] Stephen: And it seems a lot better now.
[1660.28] Curry: Well, when I was testing indoors and it wasn't working, it's like, oh, is this working? How do I do it? And I had to put these blinds up here and I had to angle the blinds and then put the GPS receiver on the edge of the blind.
[1676.28] Curry: So it's kind of pointing out the window at an angle and then try and lay enough cable through so I can just get some stats from it to see if it's actually working or not.
[1683.28] Jack: Well, I've done that. Put the plane out the window in the hope to just get a few messages back and forth and to know it is actually working.
[1695.28] Stephen: Just get that fresh alma, that goodness on so you can go out and fly and you won't be standing in a field waiting and waiting.

[1786.28] Curry: In comparison, like I now, it's just like, what is going on? Why is there a spreadsheet in this thing?
[1792.28] Curry: Why does it keep saying my compass is crazy all the time? I don't understand it.
[1796.28] Stephen: And while I now doesn't really allow you to do sophisticated tuning, at least you've got kind of some tuning.
[1802.28] Stephen: I think the pit loop on R2 pilot, isn't it like a 1K pit loop or something or even slower?

[1812.28] Curry: It's hard to say. You just have to look for all these different, weird setting things and try and do.

[1884.6] Curry: I was like, can I have this? This looks interesting. It's a VTOL plane. I think that's more interesting.
[1889.6] Curry: And first it's like, oh, we can't ship that to you. And then it's like, oh, right now we can't give any samples this way.
[1896.6] Stephen: So the plug and play version is 136 quid.
[1902.6] Stephen: So that gives you everything except the flight controller.
[1905.6] Stephen: Check in the flight controller, ESC and GPS, and then it's 200.
[1911.6] Stephen: So because they're going to give you some brando, unbranded, God knows who made it flight controller.

[1919.6] Stephen: I'd probably go for just getting the 136 quid one and reckoning with the £7 you can find.
[1926.6] Curry: Pimmy has got quite a good reputation.
[1929.6] Curry: They're one of the few companies that bought out quads that are on the sort of level that DJI could do.
[1936.6] Curry: I think Andy RC reviewed a bunch of their stuff.
[1939.6] Curry: I know Caroline had one for a while as well. And they seem pretty good.
[1943.6] Curry: So I was thinking that the quality of this might be all right.
[1946.6] Curry: But I didn't make the point.
[1949.6] Stephen: In his review, he said, well, there's a plug for a GPS with two extra wires for I2C for the mag magnetometer.
[1958.6] Stephen: And the GPS they've installed doesn't have a magnetometer, which you kind of need if you're doing iNav as a multirotor.
[1965.6] Stephen: So you're not going to be able to get all the autonomous stuff on this.
[1969.6] Stephen: So you probably, yeah, it just looks like you should probably do your own.
[1975.6] Curry: But it's not running iNav, is it?
[1977.6] Curry: It's running a type of R2 pilot on that particular one.
[1981.6] Curry: It's all right.
[1983.6] Stephen: You still want a mag for heading, don't you, with a multirotor?
[1987.6] Curry: Ideally, but it's both a multirotor and fixed wing.
[1992.6] Curry: So the fixed wing can obviously derive the direction from going forward.
[1998.6] Curry: And I think even an R2 pilot, you don't have to have a compass for a flying fixed wing.
[2005.6] Curry: It's just a fact when it then stops and goes into multirotor mode, it doesn't really know which way it's facing.

[2014.6] Stephen: OK, well, yeah, I guess so long as you're not planning on doing any precision stuff, you should be A-OK.

[2026.6] Stephen: There's something cool about the multirotor take off and then just zoom when you flip into wing mode.

[2053.6] Curry: And I used to joke that his OSD looked like an Excel spreadsheet because it was just all this stuff everywhere.

[2063.6] Stephen: One thing they make a point off with this, if you do buy the ready to fly one,
[2070.6] Stephen: then they've done all of the spreadsheet simulator stuff for R2 pilot for you.
[2075.6] Stephen: And you get something that's basically sanely configured and ready to go, which is nice.

[2084.6] Curry: And there's a fly by Y and B as well, I think.
[2086.6] Curry: I don't know the difference.
[2087.6] Curry: That's why I thought it was quite good.
[2089.6] Curry: But I can keep asking them because it's like, no, I don't want to review any of your crap you're talking about.

[2099.6] Stephen: The plane will hold roll and pitch specified by the sticks.
[2104.6] Stephen: OK, so it's like it doesn't actually you're not controlling the servos, you're controlling the pitch.
[2111.6] Stephen: And then there's going to be a PID controller that actually moves the servos and hits that pitch that you've told it to do.

[2188.76] Curry: But I like the idea of like, OK, we've done our fixed wing flying and drop.

[2377.99] Curry: which is from beta FPV and it's called something like the SuperG Transmitter.
[2383.99] Curry: This is a module with two active antennas, which what can broadcast on E LRS
[2391.99] Curry: and it goes up to one watt.
[2393.99] Curry: And there's this new mode for it called Gemini.
[2395.99] Curry: And I have to say, I didn't know anything about any of the other modes.
[2400.99] Curry: As far as I'm concerned with E LRS, I was like, I install my receiver.
[2405.99] Curry: I install my transmitter.
[2406.99] Curry: I put it on something like 250 Hertz and I fly and I can go relatively far away.
[2412.99] Curry: And then my LQs always about 100 might drop in the turn and then it's 100.
[2416.99] Curry: So I've never thought about anything else.
[2418.99] Curry: But then I found there's all these other modes, which you probably know quite a lot about,
[2422.99] Curry: but I never really looked at them.
[2424.99] Curry: So you had stuff like antenna diversity where you have two antennas on the receiver.
[2430.99] Curry: And depending on the RSSI, it would say, oh, I'll take the packet from this one
[2434.99] Curry: or all this one's become stronger.
[2436.99] Curry: I'll take the packet from that one.
[2437.99] Curry: And then you got this thing called true diversity,
[2439.99] Curry: which was both antennas work at the same time.
[2441.99] Curry: And they're like, we'll have this one because that packet's not corrupted.
[2444.99] Curry: And this packet is.
[2445.99] Curry: And so you have multiple chances to get the same stuff across.
[2449.99] Curry: Gemini is kind of interesting because instead of just having, okay,
[2454.99] Curry: we'll send the packet twice.
[2456.99] Curry: And then you might get it on one of your diversity receivers.
[2459.99] Curry: It says, oh, we'll send the packet on one frequency on this one.
[2462.99] Curry: And we'll send the packet on a slightly different frequency on this one.
[2465.99] Curry: Therefore, if there's RF interference along the way,
[2467.99] Curry: hopefully one of you will get along.
[2470.99] Curry: And then I found out there was this, these other modes, the D modes,
[2475.99] Curry: or also called deja vu, something assistance, diversity assistance, DVDA,
[2485.4] Curry: which when you put it into D250, it operates internally at 1000 hertz
[2491.4] Curry: and sends that one packet like four times on different frequencies.
[2495.4] Curry: So it's like you've got four chances to get it,
[2497.4] Curry: but you're effectively working at 250 hertz.
[2499.4] Curry: And you can combine that with Gemini.
[2502.4] Curry: So you're having all these packets flying around different frequencies.
[2506.4] Curry: So your chances of getting to one of, well,
[2509.4] Curry: from one of these to one of the receivers is.
[2512.4] Stephen: So you've run like D250.
[2514.4] Stephen: And on the back end, that's doing a thousand, perhaps it's your each radio
[2518.4] Stephen: because this isn't just two antennas.
[2520.4] Stephen: This is two discrete radios in a single module.
[2523.4] Stephen: That's the cool thing here, right?
[2525.4] Stephen: That it's not like antenna diversity where it's like,
[2528.4] Stephen: we've got all the antennas, we'll use the strongest antenna.
[2530.4] Stephen: Now there's two radio chains that duplicate everything up through the radio.
[2536.4] Stephen: And so it's going to be sending the packet four times out of each channel.
[2540.4] Stephen: So you've got eight packets in the air to ensure that just one of them gets through.
[2545.4] Stephen: That gives you pretty good odds.
[2547.4] Stephen: I love this. It's like doing this.
[2550.4] Curry: And then you've got two discrete receivers saying, okay,
[2555.4] Curry: we're going to get one of these, surely.
[2557.4] Curry: Surely we must get one.
[2559.4] Curry: And the idea of being that if you're in a particularly bad RF environment
[2565.4] Curry: where you might be getting...
[2567.4] Curry: I think the typical use case here is you're at an FPV race event.
[2571.4] Curry: Loads of people in the air, loads of people have their radios on.
[2573.4] Curry: Everybody's operating at a very high resolution.
[2577.4] Curry: And there's just stuff going on everywhere.
[2580.4] Curry: That sort of thing might affect your transmission rate.
[2584.4] Curry: And obviously for racers, if they're missing a few packets,
[2589.4] Curry: you know what they're like, it's like, I can feel it.
[2591.4] Curry: I can feel it in my thumbs or my pinch.
[2594.4] Stephen: And the racers are going to be on them and go, 25 milliwatt only.
[2597.4] Stephen: Only 25 milliwatts.
[2598.4] Stephen: You've got to do everything you can with that 25 milliwatt.
[2601.4] Curry: Exactly.
[2602.4] Curry: So there are a lot of very interesting ways of boosting your signal.
[2606.4] Curry: Now I've tested this, and I don't think my test for this is particularly robust,
[2613.4] Curry: but I did it nevertheless because I didn't have anything else,
[2616.4] Curry: which equals I took my receiver and plugged it in the back
[2620.4] Curry: and stuck it on my desk without putting these in the position.
[2625.4] Curry: Then I stuck this on my radio, put the whole thing at 25 milliwatts,
[2629.4] Curry: walked down the street.
[2630.4] Curry: So I put three houses in between me and the receiver.
[2634.4] Curry: And then I looked on my radio telemetry to see what was my RSI on each of the antennas
[2640.4] Curry: and what was my LQ.
[2642.4] Curry: And I could take like a single antenna and put it in this position,
[2646.4] Curry: and my LQ would be somewhere from 20 to 30.
[2651.4] Curry: And then I tried doing various things to try and get it up.
[2654.4] Curry: I think one of the problems is that it was built for RF problems
[2659.4] Curry: as opposed to buildings in the way blocking the signal problems.
[2663.4] Curry: But it's still got a better signal, although it's very temperamental.
[2670.4] Curry: The problem is it jumped around quite a lot.
[2672.4] Curry: And by just moving my radio this much, I got a vast different signal.
[2677.4] Curry: But on the worst case of like single antenna internal module,
[2684.4] Curry: albeit the receivers were working in diversity,
[2687.4] Curry: I said 20 to 30, no matter what they did.
[2690.4] Curry: And on the best thing, it could drop as low as 50,
[2694.4] Curry: but very slight turns would get it up to sort of 60 to 80.
[2699.4] Curry: So it was kind of weird for me,
[2701.4] Curry: because when I was looking for it going through each one,
[2703.4] Curry: it was like, well, it seems a bit better, but not brilliantly better.
[2707.4] Curry: And then I moved up and it seems all right.
[2709.4] Curry: And then when I looked back at the video and I saw the initial one to like,
[2713.4] Curry: we're running in Gemini mode using D250.
[2716.4] Curry: It's like, oh, that is quite a difference.
[2718.4] Curry: In fact, I'm getting a lot more through than because like,
[2722.4] Curry: I was literally trying to film it with my phone and talking about it.
[2726.4] Curry: Every two seconds, the radio was like RF critical and stuff like that,
[2730.4] Curry: as opposed to when I was using Gemini, it wasn't.
[2733.4] Curry: So it's quite an interesting system.
[2735.4] Curry: I'm not sure I'll need it in my flying.
[2739.4] Curry: If you're in a field and you've got LQ of 100 on a single antenna,
[2743.4] Curry: then you're not likely to see any benefit.
[2745.4] Curry: But I am kind of interested because it turns out that the 14 channel receiver,
[2750.4] Curry: I was trying to test for the past few weeks and I'm able to go out
[2754.4] Curry: and is on my mini talent.
[2756.4] Curry: And what I've done, it's a V-wing.
[2758.4] Curry: So I've got the antenna stuck either side.
[2760.4] Curry: That is also a true diversity receiver.
[2763.4] Curry: So we'll work with this.
[2764.4] Curry: And I was interesting to see what would happen in a turn in a sort
[2771.4] Curry: of a regular single transmitter antenna versus Gemini,
[2777.4] Curry: or even in true diversity.
[2779.4] Curry: Will it overcome the problem of doing the turn and having the nulls?
[2783.4] Curry: Could you just do that in a diversity anyway?
[2785.4] Curry: That might be a moot point.
[2787.4] Curry: We will see.
[2788.4] Stephen: Yeah, I think what we're really getting around here is the problems
[2792.4] Stephen: that you get from things like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
[2795.4] Stephen: Because when Express LRS connects between the transmitter and the receiver,
[2802.4] Stephen: it's not staying on a single frequency, right?
[2805.4] Stephen: The passphrase that you give Express LRS is actually hashed to produce a table.
[2812.4] Stephen: So you give it a bunch of digits and just like with Wi-Fi passwords,
[2815.4] Stephen: it uses that to extract other data and it produces a table that tells it
[2821.4] Stephen: not just which single frequency to go onto,
[2824.4] Stephen: but how to kind of play the melody of all the different frequencies
[2828.4] Stephen: that it jumps around.
[2830.4] Stephen: And it's going to produce a different jump pattern for each passphrase
[2836.4] Stephen: that you give it.
[2837.4] Stephen: So the two lock-on have the same passphrase,
[2839.4] Stephen: and then it's going to have a jump table that it chooses.
[2841.4] Stephen: And go up and down frequencies at the same time.
[2844.4] Stephen: Well, if one of those frequencies happens to be on, you know,
[2849.4] Stephen: you're coinciding with a Bluetooth transmission or a Wi-Fi transmission
[2852.4] Stephen: that also does this because Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also frequency hopping
[2857.4] Stephen: spread spectrum systems, they're going to knock out that packet.
[2862.4] Stephen: But if you've got two Express LRS radios that have two slightly different
[2867.4] Stephen: frequency hopping schemes, then when Wi-Fi stomps on one of them
[2873.4] Stephen: or Bluetooth stomps on one of those packets,
[2875.4] Stephen: the other one is going to get through.
[2877.4] Stephen: So it sorts out situations where you've got a radio signal that happens
[2882.4] Stephen: to just jump on the frequency that one of those radios is on
[2885.4] Stephen: that the other one will get through.
[2888.4] Curry: So yeah, typical use case is your busy race event.
[2893.4] Curry: And I think Joe Smith put a video up many moons ago when he developed this,
[2898.4] Curry: showing the difference on race events,
[2901.4] Curry: and they had seven people in the air at a time.
[2903.4] Curry: And sort of, I think he was always on sort of 90-ish LQ at the worst case,
[2908.4] Curry: but when he put it on, like Gemini, it came up to 100.
[2911.4] Curry: And of course, it gets this full whack there.
[2914.4] Curry: The other thing this might be useful for is people that are into long range.
[2917.4] Curry: If you've ever sort of flown long range on fixed-wing or whatever,
[2922.4] Curry: say fixed-wing, because you've got more time in the air,
[2924.4] Curry: is what can happen is you're flying along and you can get, like,
[2929.4] Curry: the signal looks really dodgy for a while.
[2932.4] Curry: And this can happen both in video and radio.
[2935.4] Curry: And then somehow you go further and it comes good again.
[2939.4] Curry: So it's like there's sort of just patches where you've got dodgy and more off areas.
[2944.4] Curry: And potentially, because I think it's what, it's 40 hertz difference,
[2949.4] Curry: isn't it, between the two antennas?
[2952.4] Curry: If you go into one of these places, it might be that the other antenna
[2955.4] Curry: is like perfectly fine, nothing's wrong here.
[2958.4] Curry: And that gets the signal and you can carry on through without any problems.
[2962.4] Curry: But yeah, again, like Express LRS keeps developing at a very high pace.
[2969.4] Curry: It can do an awful lot now.
[2971.4] Curry: It's even more impressive than it was before.
[2973.4] Stephen: Yeah, I'm looking forward to some of the Bluetooth telemetry outputs.
[2978.4] Stephen: That's one thing I wanted to use.
[2981.4] Stephen: That seems to have been in the wings for a while.
[2984.4] Stephen: But I'm hoping to, I always quite fancy syncing to like an Android phone
[2989.4] Stephen: and using a telemetry viewer to kind of see where I've been flying
[2992.4] Stephen: if I've got GPS on the quad.
[2995.4] Stephen: I've never really got good results putting the unit in the radio.
[2998.4] Stephen: And I think having the Bluetooth come from the Express LRS transmitter
[3003.4] Stephen: would make a ton more sense
[3005.4] Stephen: because those people kind of design things a bit more carefully
[3009.4] Stephen: than some of the add-in boards you get for OpenTX, I think.

[3014.4] Curry: And I still have to check out wireless head tracking as well
