You were joined by a lot of master Frank [10.36] Frank: Good evening [12.52] Jack: Everyone's like a curry hitting [14.72] Frank: Hello [16.12] Jack: my buddy Cole [18.12] Jack: Howdy [19.64] Jack: And I'm bright till I fly you've flown [27.98] Jack: What yes? [29.58] Jack: Yeah, Jack. Have you fun? No [33.22] Frank: You're not in Brighton so [35.5] Frank: Don't think about your name. You must have flown [40.38] Koel: It's always windy so his hair may have flown [46.18] Frank: Flowing up a motorway, I [52.66] Koel: Flew a [54.78] Koel: DJI mini 2 today in the crazy wind [58.86] Frank: Did you get it right [61.18] Koel: Surprisingly, yes, I did [63.5] Koel: It it kept giving me all these warnings like you are in a heavy wind you cannot automatically return to home [69.86] Koel: I'm like, oh, well good thing. I know how to buy this thing [74.46] Curry: Why can't it automatically return to home in heavy wind right? That's what I like. Why can't it fly at home? I know [81.74] Jack: It's so weird [83.38] Jack: Have you found? [85.54] Jack: That you're starting to fight the controls now that you know how to fly manual or [91.58] Jack: Are you finding it? [94.02] Jack: like a bit more comfortable and know that you can [99.02] Jack: Kind of bring it home yourself [101.82] Koel: Well, so bit it's like two things. It's I used to be a thumber for the Mavic's but since I started [111.46] Koel: FPV I'm a pincher with FPV. So now I'm a pincher with Mavic's [115.86] Koel: Which is a bit odd, but I don't know I do feel like I I can like [122.62] Koel: Before I started an FPV. I feel like I would do like one [126.38] Koel: Control or command at a time. I would be like I'd go up or I'd go forward [131.18] Koel: Or go side to side. Well after flying FPV. I'm a lot more comfortable mixing, you know [137.74] Koel: both sticks I guess so I can do some up and forward or [143.22] Koel: Down forward and roll the the gimbal. So I don't know just was that [150.78] Frank: Amidex trick. So what's the term? Does it count as cross controls if it's flying a Mavic? I feel like that's [159.82] Koel: Maybe fishing up. Yeah, it's I [163.54] Koel: mean, it's weird too because I actually try to I [167.58] Koel: Try to get more out of the Mavic than I know that I can because I know that it's kind of like I [173.62] Koel: don't know it's still it's still a great tool and it's still it's still fun to fly but I [178.34] Koel: Don't know. I I can only really fly one battery nowadays. I'm like, okay [182.66] Koel: I've been up here for 30 minutes and this is super boring. It looks nice to the general audience, but [190.86] Koel: Yeah, it's a little bit I'm like, why do I have the fly more combo? [194.34] Koel: I can't sit here for an hour and a half of [198.14] Koel: Down side [202.46] Koel: Backwards [203.98] Koel: Yeah, it's uh [206.5] Koel: You know right tool for the job or if you want to get certain type of shots, but I guess for I [213.3] Koel: Was talking to some guys and they were saying, you know for long ish range Mavic's are great [218.78] Koel: it's just it's not quite the same experience of an FPV drone, but [225.0] Koel: Yeah [226.76] Frank: Yeah [231.52] Koel: No, this was literally just me I was like well [234.68] Koel: the leaves are changing I [237.28] Koel: I'm probably not gonna get too many more opportunities. So I [241.48] Koel: Had to do some groceries and I was like, well before that I'll do I'll do a little 30-minute boring Mavic mini-flight [250.0] Curry: Well, what you can't do is say I know I'll go and fly my Mavic for fun [255.4] Curry: Yeah, because that would be pointless if you got like, oh the leaves look nice [259.56] Curry: Maybe I'll take an aerial picture of them. Yeah, now I know I need to use this battery and I've got another 20 minutes to fly [267.12] Curry: Go around your circles and stuff. I find it interesting your pinching [271.16] Curry: This is like the one drone you can fly pretty much with your feet and get the same results [275.32] Koel: Yeah, I don't know it just it feels more comfortable now and I found that when I the resistance on the sticks [283.32] Koel: Cuz it's obviously it's totally they're both spring-loaded and and fairly tight [287.56] Koel: I find when I'm using my thumbs, I almost like I don't want to say I get like [293.36] Koel: It just I don't know that something feels a bit off about it having so much like fighting me [297.8] Koel: I guess because throttle I'm not used to you know, I mean I have a small tool [304.04] Curry: It's the up-down stick. Yes. Yes [308.16] Koel: Yeah, I don't know. It's it's it's weird. I just I don't know if I can go back to thumbing [313.32] Koel: I guess I I tried thumbing on FPV, but it it just didn't work out for me. So I've just been pinching ever since [322.4] Frank: Read this. Yeah as Carolyn says it's for presenting a subject [329.16] Curry: Yeah, it is. They are good tools [332.0] Curry: But not fun [334.0] Curry: No, I think of it as like [336.76] Curry: I can go back and forth between like not like flown it for a while a mavic and an FPV drone [343.16] Curry: Quite easily because they're so different one is you're just pushing a tripod around the sky [348.96] Curry: And you don't even think about [351.44] Curry: Pushing forward because of course the camera angle doesn't change. It's because of the gimbal. Yeah, and the upper is actually like flying stuff [358.92] Curry: So it's it's I find it pretty easy to transition without even thinking about it. It's just like we're going over here. Yeah [368.36] Koel: Ebr he's saying [370.28] Koel: thumbs for the win [371.92] Koel: You know what? I've I one thing I've been watching is I've been watching a lot of freestyle guys and when they post their [378.12] Koel: Stick cam or is that was yeah when they put their stick cam footage a lot of the freestyle guys are thumbers [384.44] Koel: It looks like and I don't know if maybe it gives you a bit more freedom [388.32] Koel: Cuz I find with pinching, you know [391.68] Koel: You do have to kind of coordinate [394.4] Koel: Like I don't know your thumb almost has more range than you having to actually move your hands a bit [399.64] Koel: You know, so I don't know if maybe with the thumbs you can [403.68] Koel: You know, I don't know. I don't know just just speculating but [407.96] Curry: This is what people just get used to. Yeah, I tried. I tried pinching [412.8] Curry: I didn't it didn't make sense to me because I've been playing [416.16] Curry: Video games for the last 40 years using my hands. I can't just like oh, I'll do this on my Xbox now [422.36] Curry: It seems equivalent to doing it on my my radio. So it's like no we're sticking with thumbs [427.32] Koel: Yeah, well actually now that you mention video games when I do play Xbox, I'm a summer [432.08] Koel: I don't use I you can't pinch joysticks on a Xbox. That's just well cuz and that would [438.76] Curry: Take away from your and the dead zone on them is this big anyway, so it doesn't it doesn't really matter [443.84] Koel: You don't need like precision like that. Yeah, it's [447.56] Koel: Yeah, I don't know. I'll maybe one of these days. I'll try thumbing again just to see what it's like [453.24] Koel: but [454.52] Koel: it's [456.0] Curry: Maybe ought to all go out and try I [458.92] Curry: Say this delicately. We also go and try fingering. We [464.72] Curry: We try flying with fingers, how would that work? That would be weird. That would be weird. I see for me up my [472.48] Koel: so I pinched like this when I'm like with my first two but my middle finger is always kind of near the [478.76] Koel: Not not on the disarm button, but like is it sort of near it if I need to [484.48] Koel: So, you know if I come in for a landing, I'm not like, okay take fingers off the throttle [490.56] Koel: Reach over press the you know disarm. It's more like okay. I'm I'm flying I'm flying okay [496.64] Koel: I'm coming in for the landing boom disarm with my middle finger. So it's [500.5] Koel: Yeah, I don't know. Oh man [506.14] Koel: Off axis had come flying BC, bro, dude. I would love to fly in BC, man. I have this like huge [514.42] Koel: Yearning for for like long-range mountain mountain flying. I've never done it before so [520.66] Koel: Damn [523.06] Curry: Canada BC Alberta just not where Cole is that's the crappy bit. Yeah pretty much [528.98] Koel: There are some lovely spots around here. But yeah, there's no real mountains like on the west coast [533.5] Koel: it's and it's funny because I was born in Edmonton, which is you know out there on the on the west, but [540.5] Koel: Yeah, I haven't flown out there yet, but one day [544.02] Curry: That's cool. I flew this week as well. Can you know that? [549.3] Curry: and [553.54] Curry: Yeah, 20 minutes cuz I was flying out I tried to redo my mini Talon [558.98] Curry: from since last time [560.66] Curry: So I've got my my old vector autopilot on it and I was using Express LRS and I wanted to see if I could make [569.02] Curry: LQ in RSSI actually work. So I tried to push the telemetry from it down a channel and say this is your LQ [576.74] Curry: I don't know how it's gonna work though. Let's let's see what happens and it kind of worked because I I sort of [584.78] Curry: It says like oh, it's at 100 that's good. My radius is 100 as well. I had to make it change difference [590.86] Curry: I went and put the radio in the microwave [592.78] Curry: As you do because that's quite well shielded and it will drop the signal quite quickly [597.98] Curry: And it seemed I had my OSD there on a screen and the thing in the microwave and I'm like, yeah [602.88] Curry: they're both dropping look that's good, but when I got to the field of fluid and [607.54] Curry: Got to like two kilometers and stuff. I like check the telemetry hundred [612.58] Curry: Check check the LQ on the [615.42] Curry: OSD 98 has like, okay, it's it scaled it funny, but it seems to work. It was horrendously windy [623.42] Curry: It was the weather forecasted like 10 to 12 miles an hour wind and it was gusting like at least 20 miles an hour [630.62] Curry: Cuz I remember flying I was going in one direction [633.74] Curry: Using that half-frottle on quite a big plane and it says I'm doing like 30 kilometers an hour [638.86] Curry: It's like that's not very quick and I turned around and didn't change the throttle. I was doing 127 kilometers an hour [645.38] Curry: means yeah, it's quite windy and [648.18] Curry: When I was just flying in a straight line in a certain direction, I was just like moving like a crab [653.58] Curry: So I had to come in this weird diagonal landing on this weird corner of the field and trying getting across [660.06] Curry: It was it was I [662.5] Curry: Say it was fun. It was a bit stressful because it was very blowy [669.62] Curry: It's challenging it's always a bit I mean [672.46] Curry: From from a good point of view launching a big plane like that into wind is [676.94] Curry: Effortless, but you do go sort of up like a rocket and sort of oops. I'm already [685.3] Curry: 180 meters I seem to have accidentally broken the law [689.74] Curry: Because it's just gonna zoom [693.26] Curry: Let me just get control of this again and bring it back down and and we'll be okay [697.7] Curry: But yeah, it's it's getting [701.56] Curry: Like like the fun now says it's getting a bit autumnal out there now, isn't it? It's cold in the mornings and [708.92] Curry: Windy and well, it's just cold now. It's raining. It's been raining all day [713.36] Frank: See there's a the RC in the chat. He's been playing recently [717.36] Frank: Andy was doing some great [719.48] Frank: Yeah [721.08] Koel: Hey, you guys have been on your on the wing stuff, eh? [724.52] Koel: Yeah, that's cool [728.6] Curry: Yeah, my head tracking was I suddenly realized after I got there that head tracking just on a pan [734.88] Curry: Versus what Andy was doing with a proper pan tilt is is no fun because you like left [739.88] Curry: Right. It's like oh, I feel I felt I'm working too hard now [743.76] Curry: I just I just do that on the radio. It's much easier [746.96] Curry: But if you if you got a proper pan tilt system, then you can look about properly [751.84] Koel: that would be a pretty cool experience I bet I've [755.0] Koel: That's something I've never experienced before is a flying a wing and be head tracking [761.2] Koel: because you could you can set a wing on a course right and just kind of like [765.68] Koel: Look around and [767.96] Curry: You could do well, they're not many not many wings tend to have panning or tilting cameras [773.32] Curry: It's more of a traditional fixed wing playing for that sort of thing wings are always like keeping it keeping it sort of sort of smooth [780.36] Curry: And aerodynamic. Oh, that's great. It's the anything because the cameras often right at the front [786.88] Curry: Whereas if you put it sort of further back in additional wing what I love to do [790.76] Curry: And if you go into a turn you look over the wing and sort of glance and what's happening as you go into your turn [795.84] Curry: That's pretty cool. And Andy was was flying that scale stuff. We spread they got a little cockpit [801.4] Curry: So yeah, look all about and and good for chasing and he was doing some nice aerobatics [808.44] Frank: Mmm [809.44] Frank: He was trying to find some tricks that people haven't done [813.24] Frank: FPV head tracking and stuff on YouTube before they he's got a challenge out [817.28] Frank: I can't know which one it was, but there was there's something that you reckon no one had done [822.64] Frank: Posting on YouTube before so I don't know if he's had any challenges to that yet [830.53] Koel: It's a good question the competition is has begun [836.25] Frank: Yeah, I [838.49] Frank: Haven't blown much recently. I've I've I've got my my wing [843.61] Frank: Where is it there that I've recovered and so it's it's nice and colorful now and there's the crashed one from the racing [851.85] Frank: That's the one. Yeah, I reckon I can get another race or two out of that now [857.45] Frank: Now that it's it's slightly less floppy than it was for my last ride to fly it [863.45] Frank: Because the last time I was trying to fly it it was quite windy and [868.37] Frank: About halfway through the day. I think the wind had sort of [873.05] Frank: Taking the last of its fatigue life out of the airframe and [877.25] Frank: So I was I was sort of putting in full stick left full stick, right and just you know, nothing was happening [882.85] Frank: It was just sort of carrying on I could I could throttle up and it would go further up wind or I could throttle back [888.69] Frank: And it would go back back downwind and that was about all the control I had [892.21] Frank: So I just sort of ended up just ditching it in a field somewhere downwind [897.69] Frank: And let's go and retrieve it and give up on the racing from that day a bit disappointing, but it's now the added carbon [903.97] Frank: It's got added [905.97] Frank: Covering so it's it's a bit stiffer a bit more rigid a bit more durable. So [912.21] Jack: If you get the control rod, oh, yeah [914.93] Frank: I've got carbon fiber control rods on there now because the control rods on there before it sort of [920.61] Frank: Become cheese where the servo would move and the tails the control surface would just stay in the same position [927.53] Frank: then the control rods would just flex in [933.01] Curry: What were they previously they're just really thin piano wire or something yeah, yeah exactly [937.93] Curry: Yeah, I had the same problem making a cardboard plane [941.69] Curry: But the problem was the fact that my surfaces were cardboard. So when I said up [948.17] Curry: It's just like I'm just gonna flex around it. It didn't it didn't react that well really [954.89] Koel: So on those on those types of wings you guys are flying [960.37] Koel: Cuz I you know, pardon me for being it completely ignorant into that realm, but is [965.73] Koel: It flight controller base is it just PWM or like how does like how does that all work? [971.33] Frank: So for the racing requirement is that it can't be in any stabilized mode [976.01] Frank: So lots of people do fly with a flight controller, but put it in manual [979.17] Frank: I fly mine without a flight controller because I can't be bothered setting something up. So I'm not going to be using [985.73] Frank: Yeah, so mine's just literally a receiver a couple of servos ESC motor. That's [993.69] Frank: FPV [995.01] Frank: Transmitter and camera and that's it. That's all on the battery. Hopefully for most of the time [1001.13] Koel: Interesting. Yeah, yeah, just simplified setup. Yep [1005.49] Frank: Absolutely bare minimum because it's a it's a flying wings Ravens [1010.13] Frank: I believe it was like originally just a slope soaring [1015.85] Frank: Wing and they sort of added it through in the kit an extra little bit to put a motor on the back [1022.73] Frank: I've put on a [1024.37] Frank: some old Cobra motor that was just kicking around and [1028.69] Frank: So, you know [1030.21] Curry: Where did you get out from Franklin? [1032.17] Curry: You had it for a while because I've got an old fly wings Raven when they tried to have the idea of wing racing [1037.37] Curry: They bought out this this kit for the the Raven race. I bought it then [1042.21] Frank: And built it last year. So it was about four years that it was sitting around not doing anything [1047.93] Frank: I may or may not have some other kits [1050.77] Frank: within reach that have also [1053.65] Frank: Been gradually building up their vintage really to fly [1057.49] Frank: But I haven't built them either. There's there's one. In fact, I was I was looking at a [1064.81] Frank: Like a scratch build guides like tutorial the other day and I really want to build one of those [1071.53] Frank: I've got the laser cutter at work. I can laser cut some stuff [1076.69] Frank: I realized I already had the kit for this and I just haven't built it [1081.61] Frank: And I've forgotten about it. So I should probably build that before laser cutting another one [1088.45] Frank: That's you know [1091.21] Frank: Things I buy them and then you know, I buy them when they're available [1096.13] Frank: And that's usually like in the summer and then I don't want to be building it in the summer [1100.69] Frank: I want to be flying it so I put it away and leave it to the winter and then I forget about it [1106.77] Frank: Find something else to do in the winter [1108.85] Frank: So I should probably like build some of these things. I've got [1114.17] Frank: What other other kits have I got so yeah, I've got that like an f22 profile plane I've got a [1124.69] Frank: Wing is it a wing wing which which what's the tiny one? It's a very very small one [1131.17] Curry: The z84 [1133.45] Frank: possibly [1134.49] Curry: wing wing [1135.69] Frank: Yeah, is that is that a tiny one? I know I've got a tiny one. It's like 400 mil or something ridiculous [1142.69] Curry: tiny tiny does it look like [1147.29] Frank: The [1150.61] Frank: The spec K from [1155.45] Frank: What do they call themselves [1159.9] Frank: But Brady who runs the [1162.82] Frank: Does a lot of the wing racing he he cuts that [1166.46] Frank: I've got one of [1169.42] Frank: No, it's not the spec K is from the other guy from the wing racing. Oh my god pressure type RC [1174.86] Frank: pressure type RC spec K, but I've got one of Brady's other wing kits and [1180.54] Jack: I've got quite a few things. Have you were you saying about the if you got a flight test arrow [1187.58] Jack: That you need to build [1190.06] Frank: probably [1192.86] Frank: 22 profile [1196.7] Jack: Because like I bought one of those and it was the guy in the UK cutting them and so it wasn't flight test foam [1202.86] Jack: It was like mount board [1205.06] Jack: Which you know produced off gases when you laser cut it and it's super poisonous [1211.34] Jack: and [1213.14] Jack: yeah, it doesn't you can't peel a layer of [1218.18] Jack: The coating off and you can't bend it how like the flight test foam stuff does [1226.22] Jack: And it's a complete waste of time because as soon as I crashed it it really did just crack in half [1231.74] Frank: Exploded into the chapters of it. Yeah [1236.14] Frank: That's a shame [1238.18] Frank: Tiny wing. Yes, that's the one the LDA RC wing. Yeah, there we go [1246.54] Jack: That's trouble is there's so many companies that don't exist anymore [1251.3] Jack: Yep [1254.14] Frank: It's like, you know flying away and all that I've got the Tyro [1260.5] Frank: 69 [1262.54] Curry: I was thinking of this one. This this is the wing wings at 84, which I turned into a bottle rocket plane [1269.1] Curry: Which is a small wing bike. It never really worked that well to me [1272.82] Curry: It worked better as a bottle rocket plane than a plane [1276.26] Curry: But I don't know the tiny wing one. You'll have to you'll have to show me that one [1280.06] Koel: So I guess my again back to my my ignorance and lack of knowledge for this stuff [1287.37] Koel: so there's wings, but then which are like the little foam ones, I guess and then there's [1292.85] Koel: Fixed wing is that? [1296.57] Curry: Traditional more traditional fixed wing as opposed to like a wing [1301.73] Frank: Like with like a cockpit and a wing and a tail and yeah the tail and the [1308.01] Curry: unless there's a V tail [1310.01] Curry: Tail in the vertical stabilizers as opposed to thing that looks like a bit like a triangle. Yeah. Gotcha. Gotcha [1316.77] Jack: Yeah, so the triangle arrowhead things are called flying wings flying wings. Okay, huh? [1323.89] Curry: Not in my hands [1328.61] Koel: So I [1330.21] Koel: Drink, I think I've seen those that arrow we type ones, you know [1334.69] Koel: Where people will equip them with GPS and stuff like that, right? [1337.57] Frank: Is that and then even with the GoPros and stuff or is that too heavy for those or you can get big ones that will carry [1352.01] Curry: This this was called the [1354.21] Curry: We wing it was it was made by a guy used to know the forum. He cut the the debt from for it and [1361.21] Curry: Yeah, we flew him around for a while. They were good. Good fun [1364.97] Curry: It's it's the type of wing you can crash into people's heads and they don't they just moan a bit at you [1372.89] Curry: But yeah, that's that's if you imagine that scaled up, yeah, then you put all sorts of stuff into it you can [1379.73] Curry: full flight controller and [1382.41] Curry: GoPros and whatevers [1385.61] Frank: Subs who he does a lot of the wing racing as well. He's got one that's big enough that he does have a [1392.13] Frank: pan [1393.57] Frank: Servo on it [1395.33] Frank: And pan around in it. We've got you know full day GI and loads of LEDs and all that kind of stuff [1400.33] Frank: Oh Wow, our faxes is doing a 3d printing tiny wing challenge on his discord [1406.57] Frank: That's cool [1415.46] Koel: Another thing I haven't gotten into yet myself is 3d printing which is [1419.7] Koel: Like a blessing and a curse because I have to rely on other people for 3d prints [1423.98] Koel: but I also don't have to go down the 3d printing rabbit hole, so [1428.82] Koel: There's a bit of a [1431.3] Koel: Yeah, it seems like like okay [1434.46] Koel: Once you have your settings dialed and say you're only printing TPU and you're good then okay great [1439.54] Koel: but once you start mixing I guess different filaments and [1444.62] Koel: Whatever. It's yeah, it seems like a seems like a lot to to really wrap your head around and and tinker with [1453.25] Frank: Yeah, it feels to me like if you've got a 3d printer that's working [1458.49] Frank: You've want lots of friends who need things 3d printing so you can keep it warm and busy [1463.69] Frank: Yeah, I'm not falling down and gathering dust because that seems [1467.69] Frank: Like how to get your 3d printer to not work [1471.21] Frank: It feels like you need to set aside like a good few days to get your 3d printer back up and running after you've left [1477.17] Frank: It sat there for more than like a few days [1480.37] Frank: Huh? [1481.73] Curry: That's my thing. Anyway, things may have to change the engines warm. Yeah [1486.33] Curry: Used to be my experience with my homemade one, which is like it's gone wrong again. Hold on. Let me get the spanner [1492.25] Curry: It's like just make it work again. But my my current Creolety one seems to just [1497.81] Curry: Work, it's actually I just last time I used it. I just [1503.29] Curry: Put my SD card in said print wondered off [1507.33] Curry: Expected it just to you get its height right and just do the print perfectly and I just came back and it's like no [1513.17] Curry: It's just sitting there quite happily. It's like things have moved on in the last 10 years of 3d printing that does sound good [1519.37] Frank: Yeah, I mean I'm talking about like [1522.29] Frank: When it was either a 20k bit of industrial equipment or a laser cut [1528.25] Frank: Ah [1531.89] Koel: Richard Warwick, yeah, this is actually a I just read about where I saw about this online. So [1537.21] Koel: Lewis Rossman, you know, mr. Mack [1540.77] Koel: border pair guy I guess [1543.17] Koel: Sort of was I guess he or it sort of is I don't know if he did as much anymore these days [1547.05] Koel: but he did a piece about [1550.33] Koel: Apparently the state of New York, I don't know if it's like fully happening or not [1553.89] Koel: But they're saying you'll need like a license and like have to do like a background check [1560.05] Koel: To have to do 3d printing [1562.09] Koel: I don't know like if it's you know [1563.89] Koel: Real or not or like how like true it's gonna be but I guess they're they're worried about people 3d printing like, you know [1571.77] Koel: weapons and such I [1574.77] Curry: Saw a comment from xjet put a community post on [1578.61] Curry: YouTube about that as well, which sounds kind of ridiculous given that you can just buy guns in America with [1586.77] Curry: Yeah, it's like cut the middleman out it's like you can buy them you can't make them [1592.29] Curry: It's kind of like saying everybody that drives a car will happily background checks just in case they deliberately run people over [1599.05] Curry: Yeah, or chefs can't use knives unless they've been it's just [1604.37] Curry: Every everything can be a deadly weapon in the use of a certain ways like yeah, but that's how much down and come at you [1611.33] Curry: within [1612.61] Curry: death by ham and cheese [1615.17] Koel: for [1616.25] Koel: forced eating Oh [1618.57] Koel: God, I would suck. I [1621.05] Frank: Feel like a pipe bomb doesn't require very much [1627.45] Jack: Any views [1629.45] Koel: Yeah [1632.73] Koel: Yeah [1634.29] Curry: Yeah, yeah, that's the yeah, it does it does kind of mirror the whole like drone thing [1640.81] Curry: It's like yo, you've got a drone you're up to no good [1644.69] Curry: Because that's easier to believe than a bunch of grown men having like fun flying toys around the field [1651.89] UNKNOWN: I [1652.89] Curry: Just want to spy on people and get up to nobody into each other. Yeah [1657.41] Jack: If they realize the level of skill that we don't have [1661.41] Jack: In it's quite, you know, like when you first learn to fly [1666.53] Jack: You're elated once you finally like finish a battery or two [1674.29] Curry: Yeah, if I go home in my tricopter wasn't in bits in a bag, I'd be really happy [1679.29] Curry: I remember the first time I flew all my four batteries and my tricopter wasn't broken and that was like several months into flying [1687.25] Curry: Other than that point I was buying [1689.61] Curry: Wood in bulk to replace the arms every single time I flew it because I would just break one [1695.21] Frank: Well, interestingly on the on the screaming props podcast recently [1699.61] Frank: I heard them saying that with with just a couple of hours on a simulator you could [1706.41] Frank: Be ready to fly without any problems at all [1710.13] Frank: There's this challenge. If anyone knows anyone who doesn't know how to play I would be interested to know how [1717.33] Jack: Cold cold living proof of that I think [1720.61] Koel: Well that I mean fair play because well the thing is dude [1725.09] Koel: I put in so many hours on the sim though before but I think you were waiting for stuff weren't you? Yeah, but so I [1733.05] Koel: Will say this the first time I ever had a you know remote control radio, whatever [1739.41] Koel: It was the beta FPV light radio, too. It was just you know, just for the sim to learn [1745.21] Koel: It did take me. I would say a good [1749.17] Koel: five plus times of like going in the sim and like just to be able to actually take off in liftoff and be able to [1758.57] Koel: maintain some level of [1760.57] Koel: flying and [1762.65] Koel: You know, it was definitely hours. It wasn't just like okay, you know, I'm good [1767.93] Koel: I mean it it's it's not that easy at first. I don't think it's it's I guess maybe some people have you know [1775.41] Koel: Some like miraculous brain power they can like somehow work it out [1779.05] Koel: But I was I was like honestly, I was like, okay [1782.81] Koel: Well, good thing I only bought the light radio too because I don't think I can do this [1787.65] Koel: Yeah [1788.77] Koel: But you know obviously practice and I feel like I put in like at least 50 hours [1794.45] Koel: maybe like 50 to 100 hours before I even flew in real life and [1798.49] Koel: you know once you get the hang of it in the sim before real life, I mean I [1804.29] Koel: Can honestly say I haven't ever fully broken like I haven't fully demolished an entire quad [1810.25] Koel: So, you know if you are new and you want to get in the hobby get a cheap radio get in the sim [1816.41] Koel: put in your hours until you're comfortable and then [1819.53] Koel: Wait on parts or whatever however you want to get into if you want to buy binding flies [1823.37] Frank: But well, that was what they were saying as well [1825.69] Frank: It's like that now buying the plays are good enough that you don't need to ever build anything yourself [1832.89] Frank: I'm thinking back, you know when I was getting into it, I mean there was there was the simulator [1839.41] Frank: There was also like the hub to the next floor like a little indoor cheap thing that you just enough to learn [1845.65] Frank: Throttle control and that kind of thing [1848.09] Frank: Sort of the dynamics of something flying with multiple voters. Yeah [1853.87] Frank: I mean that that was I found that helpful, but I guess if you can just [1859.21] Frank: Like you say have something that is good enough in your simulator that you can then just go straight to like a [1865.53] Frank: Biden fly I guess that all that works [1869.33] Koel: Yeah, and actually curry your sim what I think was actually the very first sim I ever [1875.45] Koel: Like try it out cuz I had access to liftoff [1879.01] Koel: I think a couple other ones, but yeah your sim was was like the actual first simulator game [1885.57] Koel: program whenever you want to call it that I opened and tried to play play around with so yeah, yeah me [1893.53] Curry: For all I take full responsibility that when I was a lad [1898.69] Curry: There weren't no simulators [1905.21] Frank: Yeah, that's that's what I had was FPV freerider [1908.89] Curry: Yeah, I came [1910.41] Curry: Wow [1911.77] Curry: 2000 I would say 15 something like that [1914.65] Curry: It was it was something what the only thing that worries me about sim and I'm sure it's true and coals living proof [1922.07] Curry: I think more than a couple of hours is that I'm an amazing [1926.63] Curry: Lina site fixed-wing pilot in a sim I can go around knife edging and just flying upside down everywhere in real life. I [1935.11] Curry: Get very stressed and sometimes I can land it and that's about it. That's [1939.51] Curry: That was stressful. Yeah, please. Can I have my my FPV goggles on this? [1944.55] Curry: This is the least stressful thing to fly line of sight because if you crash it, it's it weighs like [1949.87] Curry: Like a tissue so it just like and you can you're fine, but everything else. I'm like, I'm so stressed flying line of sight [1957.19] Curry: Because it's like I've got a land this and then I just like it a turn and oh [1963.63] Curry: My triangle looks the same in different directions [1968.39] Curry: It completely and now I don't know what's going on and it's stressing me put me on a sim it's amazing [1974.11] Curry: It's like watching some display pilot, but in real life [1978.39] Curry: Yeah, like as Andy I see says there's no reset button in real life and that that stresses you out of it [1984.35] Frank: That that's my only worry. I don't understand that. Well, I can't fly [1988.51] Frank: line of sight in a simulator just because there's only like three pixels in front of work out which way it's going is like [1996.47] Frank: Unless it's like front up against the camera. It's just impossible in real life. I've got more HD vision than the screen [2005.31] Curry: Yeah, I've been what's happened. I think that's very cool [2008.47] Curry: I think what's happened is where I got so used to flying quads [2012.47] Curry: Like, you know a few feet off the ground [2014.47] Curry: I now take that approach to planes which is the really wrong thing you do [2019.03] Curry: People talk about being two mistakes high [2021.43] Curry: For a reason and if you're trying to fly them one foot off the ground and you make a very slight cock up [2026.51] Curry: It's hit the ground before you've even noticed you've made the cock up [2029.11] Curry: So yeah, that's that's my fault if you're up high and you lose orientation [2033.11] Curry: You can just wiggle on the sticks of it and see which ways it goes. It's like, oh there it is [2036.75] Curry: And it's even if it starts spinning down towards the ground. You've got a chance of pulling it out again [2041.95] Koel: Yeah, see for me like all line of sight. Okay [2046.87] Koel: I've done some and very minimal line of sight with a quad [2051.67] Koel: You know maybe in my in my apartment just to like when I've built it, you know [2056.19] Koel: Or you know fixed up a quad and just do a little hover test or whatever [2060.15] Koel: Or even just outside but I find that I need to keep it like I need to keep it low [2065.67] Koel: Because the moment that it starts getting up high and if I turn I am like, uh-oh [2070.85] Koel: I have to disarm because and I have to keep the you know, the back towards me like that [2075.85] Koel: I have to keep the orientation. I can't turn the orientation because [2080.01] Koel: Once I do that like I I can fly it away. I can fly it back [2083.61] Koel: I can fly it to the side but get me get me turned around and and if I give too much throttle [2090.37] Koel: Well, I might be losing that drone [2094.41] Koel: Yeah [2095.85] Koel: that's uh [2097.93] Koel: It is actually kind of fun like yeah, I remember a few times I would bring out out line of sight [2102.53] Koel: I only had maybe like [2104.77] Koel: Three quarters of a pack left and I'm like, well, I can't really do much [2108.37] Koel: So let's just practice, you know hovering line of sight and whatever it is kind of fun to you know [2112.61] Koel: blip the throttle do a little roll and catch it and sort of like, you know [2117.57] Koel: Just play around in front of you with it instead of sending it out [2120.37] Koel: I don't know. I don't know how the how the plane guys do that or the or the heli guys I should say [2126.49] Curry: The heli guys the ones that seem to it I [2129.89] Curry: Can only suggest that it's all in it's all in the fun memory because there's no way they can say [2135.93] Curry: I just need to roll it half over and then tick-tock back and then [2140.29] Curry: Invert it and then to make it go up. It's like you've just learned this. It's kind of like Street Fighter, you know [2148.89] Curry: It's like yeah, I do Ken is like forward down. That's like that. They've learned these special moves [2155.57] Koel: Yeah, they have the they have the special tricks like like muscle memory. Yeah [2161.37] Jack: evil tank controls [2163.89] Jack: just know it from [2167.25] Jack: Doing it. I don't really think about it [2170.05] Jack: exactly [2171.77] Jack: Yeah [2175.37] Frank: Gave me the controller for Resident Evil. I have no chance [2181.13] Curry: But that's it even even when you get like [2184.29] Curry: Like in a quad if only put if I if I can fly forwards and carry on going then [2190.49] Curry: You know, I can do a loop because let's keep flying forwards. You can just amend your position and bring it around [2196.37] Curry: Yeah, but if you then think about okay [2199.09] Curry: I'm in a heli and I've I've tried some heli flying [2201.89] Curry: I didn't get to doing this shit and I can sort of nose in hover and it's like, okay [2206.89] Curry: It means reversed but as soon as you get to 3d, it's like, okay now turn upside down nose in and like, okay [2213.25] Curry: This is the white ray round [2214.69] Curry: But now something else is reverse and my throttle doesn't work the same way as it used to it's like [2219.09] Curry: Yeah, it completely bodes your mind and those guys [2222.05] Curry: I mean again, like I'm much better on a simulator than I am in real life [2226.31] Curry: I can fly inverted brilliantly on my sim, but I've not even tried it once on an actual heli because I'm still struggling [2233.53] Curry: Just to fly circuits [2236.05] Curry: Nj gave me some decent tips last time. He said I was trying to put far too much [2240.81] Curry: Sort of roll into my turns. He's just like leave just lead in with your rudder [2244.61] Curry: Just go forward and rudder it round rather than try and coordinate the turns like you would in the quad straight away. So [2250.37] Curry: It's some tips there, I guess [2253.01] Curry: Yeah, they're hard [2255.49] Frank: That is another rabbit hole. I would like to wander down at some point but yeah [2261.33] Frank: I would like somewhere that I could fly comfortably and not worry about [2266.89] Frank: being mugged [2270.57] Koel: That's a fair that's a fair point. Yeah, that's that seems that seems reasonable [2276.97] Jack: Doing [2278.97] Jack: Sorry bike, that's all right [2281.57] Frank: Well, the bike is back in the garage where it should be in this weather [2286.73] Jack: Sorry, what were you gonna say? [2288.97] Koel: Yeah, so well, I sort of a slight [2293.21] Koel: detour here, but I was curious if any of you lads have [2298.61] Koel: ventured into the world of I now before or and not so I guess and or [2305.57] Koel: please [2307.57] Koel: Explain to me because I'm coming from kiss. I don't know anything about any other flight controllers. So [2314.37] Koel: How does it work as far as Kate? There's there's all these manufacturers and you can flash beta flight and yada-yada do those same [2321.41] Koel: Manufactured boards you can flash. I now to it or does I now need a specific thing or maybe [2327.61] Koel: Like how does that all work? [2330.33] Curry: You can generally take a board that will run beta flight and run. I have on it. There are there are possibly some exceptions but [2338.17] Curry: Generally speaking. Yeah, you can just install whichever firmware you like and run with it. Yeah [2343.53] Curry: Are you thinking into I know I know if I've only done on planes before [2348.41] Curry: What have I know I have done it on one quad before as well as a test [2352.77] Curry: Yeah, but it was annoying because you had to put a compass on a stalk and it made the quad looks stupid [2357.97] Curry: Hmm. Well, are you thinking because you were talking about GPS earlier? Is this what you're thinking about? [2363.93] Koel: Yeah, I was cuz I mean apparently I now have has some really great like return to home and [2370.85] Koel: And just like overall GPS [2374.01] Koel: Functionality, I guess I don't [2376.17] Jack: But the ultra's will do that [2378.53] Koel: Yeah, but do I want to send my? [2380.69] Koel: My ultra out into the Taiwan mountains to never be retrieved again [2385.81] Curry: Wow, that really demonstrates how expensive kiss stuff is doesn't it? Well, not just the expensive price of it [2391.45] Koel: It's getting older another one the availability, right? So like I [2396.61] Koel: Part of me is like okay. I do have some old kiss stuff. I do have a kiss ultra [2402.85] Koel: But maybe I should build something that's you know meant for longer range [2409.49] Koel: I mean, that's what I hear is that I now have is kind of like a you know, a long-range [2415.77] Koel: Whatever and and correct me if I'm wrong cuz I again [2419.05] Koel: I I come from a lot of lack of knowledge in this hobby as far as anything other than five inch freestyle [2425.85] Koel: With kiss and I would really love to to venture off into long-range [2431.45] Koel: seven-inch [2433.25] Koel: lie eye on [2434.85] Koel: Sort of territory because I am going to Taiwan [2438.57] Koel: You know in the future, so I would like to be able to have something [2443.81] Koel: That can be a not gonna only fly for five minutes and be [2449.05] Koel: Potentially could you know come back to me if if if all else fails I [2455.05] Curry: Think both were worth exploring. I tend to think on quads that I now could be overkill because it is [2461.85] Curry: It's very good in what it does, but it's got stuff like [2464.77] Curry: Position hold and it will return to hand [2467.81] Curry: Return to home and land and stuff like that and you can put waypoints in it and we'll fly that for you [2472.77] Curry: yeah, but in terms of the sort of flying you're doing it it seems to be that be a flight is is possibly enough because the [2479.33] Curry: idea of putting a GPS on a quad and having rescue mode is like [2484.69] Curry: Something's happened and I've either lost video or I've lost the radio link [2488.53] Curry: And therefore I don't just wanted to drop to the floor and at that point it says, okay [2493.29] Curry: Turn around and I will start coming home at the point where you recover control link or you recover the video link you say [2499.57] Curry: I'm taking control over back if you just sort of well [2502.85] Curry: I'm just gonna wait here till it lands now that would be like a bit dull [2505.51] Curry: You can sort of take back your flight again and start flying it [2507.91] Koel: I think it's kind of like the mavics right like you say you lose whatever you know [2512.37] Koel: It's gonna return to home [2513.45] Koel: But then once you have everything back you can cancel the return to home and then just take back over again, right? [2519.31] Curry: Exactly and I think the thing with [2521.59] Curry: Any time you're talking about especially with beta flight because the GPS thing was a bit of an afterfall [2527.51] Curry: But they seem to be developing more now is you've got a you've got to build up a lot of trust [2533.11] Curry: With these things and test it a lot and make sure it works, which currently on my 7-inch [2537.87] Curry: I don't have much trust because it kept falling out the sky and now the motor [2542.23] Curry: so if if you if you sort of go out and [2545.79] Curry: You check return to home and it does the right thing and it comes back and you can tune those [2551.87] Curry: Figures slightly to make sure it's always gonna like every time I'm gonna make a flight [2556.19] Curry: I will just flick rescue mode test on make sure it rises [2559.67] Curry: Comes back towards me if it starts to now I take the mode out again and I can go for my fly [2564.59] Curry: but these days [2567.79] Curry: With you know Express LRS and a decent VTX [2571.91] Curry: You will go a long way into Taiwan right up to the legal limit. I expect yeah if you want to and [2578.91] Curry: Yeah, I was I was trying to test out [2582.91] Curry: 4000 milliamp hour lie on batteries with my 7-inch and unfortunately mine fell out of the sky after [2590.11] Curry: 17 minutes, but at that point I was on about 3.3 and the light ions would go down to 2.5 [2596.83] Curry: So I was gonna take it to 3. Yes measure and that would get me at least 20 minutes [2601.63] Curry: I figured and that was that was sort of a slow cruise [2605.67] Curry: But depending what you were doing it's like you can go very fast for like 10 12 minutes [2611.11] Curry: I think you'd you'd cover a lot of distance and seal up [2614.15] Curry: Mm-hmm, I mean like we were quite interested in your last flight you did and we're like go further [2620.39] Koel: Well, so my because I know I kind of got a tease for it and I'm like [2626.91] Koel: well [2627.95] Koel: if [2629.35] Koel: If I can do this with this, what can I like? Well, my other thought was okay [2634.75] Koel: I've done some testing just with my 5-inch. I know 5-inch is not a [2638.71] Koel: You know long range at all. You're not supposed to it's too heavy or it's too whatever [2643.23] Koel: but I [2644.63] Koel: I'm able to get about six to seven minutes with a new battery if I'm just like [2650.51] Koel: Cruising if I'm just you know, maybe [2653.39] Koel: You know two-thirds maybe like half throttle or just whatever like just cruising speed not I'm not going crazy [2660.19] Koel: I'm not doing any throttle blips [2662.59] Koel: And I mean six to seven minutes is that seems okay [2667.07] Koel: But ten to fifteen minutes might be you know a little nicer [2671.47] Koel: I mean, I did think about maybe putting one of those, you know rush solo or whatever [2677.31] Koel: VTX is in a five inch and just maybe get a you know, a higher capacity pack and just hoping for the best [2683.51] Koel: But it's not an ideal situation. I know that so that's why I'm like I got to get into this sort of seven-inch realm because [2691.15] Koel: You know efficiency and and whatnot, right? So I think so cuz although the chief is on my bench carefully [2699.11] Curry: You can get like up to about nine minutes out of it. You've always got that [2703.63] Curry: That level of anxiety with like how long I've been going do I have to turn around now if you've got like [2708.99] Curry: 10 minutes out or you've got something that reads like your million power spent and you know exactly what it will do [2715.31] Curry: you've got a lot of and obviously you [2717.95] Curry: You've done practice flights and you you know what you can get then you've got an awful lot of [2722.91] Curry: Confidence about what you've got and how long you've got before you get worried [2726.63] Curry: I mean you still have to take into account like what if there's like a headwind coming back or something like that? [2731.07] Koel: Yeah changes, but you always want to give yourself some extra. Yeah [2736.11] Koel: Yeah, yeah, it's I mean the other thing too as far as where when I was in Taiwan last time it like I [2742.27] Koel: Wasn't standing in an ideal spot. I could have been standing in a little bit better spot [2746.23] Koel: So I would have had better, you know video line of sight or whatever [2750.39] Koel: I mean, I trust my crossfire like it's I'm not trying to go out like [2756.07] Koel: Five ten kilometers [2757.91] Koel: I'm trying to you know [2758.95] Koel: I want to go as far as I'm comfortable going and come back and I'm not trying to break any records here or anything [2764.99] Koel: But I would like to get that sort of sense of you know [2767.87] Koel: I want to send it out there and not have to be like, oh crap. My five inches gone forever. You know, I mean like [2774.75] Koel: so I mean I I [2777.99] Koel: Talked to Jack about this before I I do have like I have an old alien that Jack was saying like maybe [2784.43] Koel: throw some five or sorry throw some six or seven inch arms on it and [2789.71] Koel: You know converting it into something like that, I guess then the other glower KV motors [2794.31] Koel: Yeah, then that was my other question is need [2797.35] Koel: Yeah, but what about ESCs though? [2799.55] Koel: Cuz you might need a I might need some more headroom on ESCs or no because you would be drawing [2805.57] Jack: Oh less less current. Yeah, is you can't draw that much [2811.31] Jack: Pack more fish you wouldn't yeah. Yeah, and even if you didn't want to go that route you could [2820.03] Jack: Use a bigger [2822.23] Jack: Lipo, yeah use the whole space of the tech top deck and not worry about having a GoPro [2828.47] Jack: For now and just have DVR and I just think that would be like [2832.23] Koel: I'm not gonna go to Taiwan and just play and just have analog DVR though if I'm gonna do that [2837.39] Jack: Yeah, I know but I'm talking about, you know as you you know [2841.91] Jack: You're not then buying a shit ton of like lithium ion pack true true [2847.19] Jack: You're not you're like whilst you're practicing. Oh [2851.43] Jack: Nactus right? Yeah, yeah, totally totally. Yeah, cuz you can always you can always move the [2858.39] Jack: you know move the [2860.43] Jack: you know the the gear over to [2863.51] Jack: You know a different platform if you get more into it and then then splash out on some lithium-ion packs [2869.55] Jack: But yeah, you could essentially be running like [2873.47] Jack: You know for us [2876.03] Jack: like 1800 [2878.67] Jack: You know that takes the whole top deck of the alien [2881.51] Jack: The kiss has got with Alex's firmware has got return to home on it [2886.31] Jack: You've already got a GPS you had that and you just get some low lower KV motors [2891.99] Jack: True, you know, I don't even they don't even have to be like [2895.59] Jack: You know like the best best brand ever, you know [2900.95] Koel: Well, what about could you not like say have a higher KV motor? [2906.43] Koel: But then just do a throttle limit on it or something or is that a is that an option or? [2911.51] Jack: well, yeah, it's [2914.35] Jack: You can but you're it's not gonna go lower KV fair enough [2920.55] Curry: Where's the efficiency point on that as a question? Yeah [2926.31] Curry: Yeah, it's I mean as sorry as Jack was saying the thing with lye iron is [2933.07] Curry: They don't they don't support you drawing without many amps [2935.95] Curry: So as soon as you put that on you are talking about like it's a nice slow cruise [2940.51] Curry: It's not like oh, I'm two miles into the jungle. I'm just gonna dive this tree and just [2949.87] Jack: You [2951.87] Jack: Like [2953.15] Jack: Really low battery and not realized it and you called just like all of sudden just dying out on you and you're like going [2958.71] Jack: full throttle and it just nothing happens [2961.39] Jack: that's [2962.79] Jack: that [2963.87] Jack: That's the experience you'll have with lithium ion you go to draw or it slowly just you won't have it [2969.79] Jack: Yeah, yeah, it won't do anything. You don't have like that instant punch [2974.83] Koel: Yeah, yeah, I mean [2977.07] Koel: I'm not trying to do anything crazy. I mean can [2980.55] Koel: You know when you see like those the guys that do the mountain dives [2983.07] Koel: they're like is that still with like a [2985.67] Koel: Seven inch up with a lie ion or can you really pull out from something like that? [2990.39] Curry: Like so you know that like if you're talking about it was falcon man, isn't it that does those ones exactly he's he's [2996.79] Curry: Yeah, he's seven seven inch and he's using massive. I think he was using sort of 8,000 million power lie ion [3003.83] Curry: Yeah on those things and of course the the bigger the battery gets the the more ampage it will give you but of course [3009.79] Curry: It's got that extra weight that you've got to carry as well [3012.11] Curry: But generally speaking if you see him he's doing a very slow and steady move up [3018.15] Curry: I said and of course on his on his descent is he's he can go fast because he's just dropping down [3023.39] Curry: Sure as soon as he comes out of it. He's not suddenly zipping up. He's he's pulling out slowly [3028.03] Curry: Yeah, and he's coming back slowly up again to do it [3031.95] Jack: Yeah, like Caroline says the pack she's building 35-amp max draw [3039.79] Koel: Off access I'll have to I'll have to hit you up man cuz it seems like you know [3045.39] Koel: You do that kind of flying because it's obviously I want to consult people that are doing you know [3051.91] Koel: Precisely like if they're consistently doing what I'm hoping to do. They obviously are gonna be good people for reference. So yeah, I'll [3060.99] Koel: If you can I'll try and find you on YouTube or or Facebook off-access and I might have some questions for you [3068.35] Jack: But yeah, I mean that's that's you know, you've kind of given yourself a bit of a taste for it. Yeah [3075.83] Jack: like going out and doing that, but then [3078.91] Jack: you're kind of then looking at sort of like [3083.75] Jack: building your trust with your gear and the sort of experience and [3089.03] Jack: Yeah, you're kind of you know, if you go head head first and sort of [3095.07] Jack: By all new like like, you know build the setup that's proven by someone else [3100.79] Jack: Yeah, that's fine. But then if you make a rookie mistake, it's game over guys. Yeah. Yeah, whereas you're looking at four motors [3110.67] Jack: Three or four arms. Yeah, and you know and then pissing with a cock you got and yeah [3116.95] Jack: you know kind of [3118.79] Jack: finding your feet [3120.55] Koel: Yeah, instead of going, you know tits out and spend a bunch of money on on. Yeah [3126.11] Koel: Yeah, it's I guess [3128.67] Koel: Yeah, there's there's two sides of it, right? It's like I got to figure out which one I'm gonna do that [3133.91] Koel: I mean as far as like I can err, you know economically that's the best way is just kind of like, you know [3140.31] Koel: use what I have and you know a couple motors is is not too bad, so [3146.49] Jack: Yeah, but like equally you kind of know you do you do enjoy it, but I do know whether [3153.97] Jack: You know, it's whether you can you know afford to lose that quad on practicing [3160.93] Koel: Well, exactly. Yeah. Yeah, and that's why I figured I'd ask you guys because I'm sure you guys you know [3166.01] Koel: You guys had some experience. I know curry you've been kind of messing around with some with the seven-inch stuff and [3170.81] Koel: It's it's it's a new territory for me, man [3173.09] Koel: And but if I'm gonna be in locations that you know [3178.13] Jack: You there for a day and you can't search [3181.57] Koel: Or like an end. Well, not even just that but if I'm gonna be in locations where I [3187.89] Koel: Should be using a long-range quad then I don't want to just be flying a five-inch quad [3192.41] Jack: You know what I mean? Like it's yeah. Yeah, it's a set of arms that will change that. Yeah. Yeah [3199.25] Jack: But yeah [3201.33] Jack: Yeah, I'll figure it out. There is there is ways of like if you do go to like a [3207.45] Jack: Falcon odd like route you can do stuff like by the the diversity system [3214.37] Jack: The diversity nano and then it has like a battery beat it and it goes into lost mode and will beacon for days [3221.77] Jack: You can follow follow curry kitten and have those annoying alarms that if you could get to turn off [3228.01] Jack: They'll go off in the back of your car [3231.45] Jack: And [3233.45] Jack: You know the right things [3235.73] Jack: Yeah, and you know, obviously stick a big old SD card in your [3241.53] Jack: in your [3243.29] Jack: You're in the goggles transmitter. Yeah, and it will save the last [3249.65] Jack: GPS locations [3253.05] Curry: On the subject of long-range quads [3255.17] Curry: I've been doing a couple of things with speedy be lately and [3259.81] Curry: They haven't like offered to give me anything like this, but I saw this on their website [3264.49] Curry: What did you think of this for a good travel long-range drone? [3269.05] Curry: We've kind of fallen out of favor with things that fold these days, but this is an eight inch [3274.21] Curry: folding drone [3275.37] Curry: Wow [3276.69] Curry: It's designed to take like up to two big lion packs on its back [3282.25] Curry: So you can hook them up in parallel. Wow. I think it's pretty interesting looking [3287.85] Frank: If you'd need the [3289.93] Frank: Folding props for it as well [3292.89] Curry: Yeah, I suppose you have to take those off. It's like oh, yeah, we didn't we didn't tell you that we took the props off [3298.05] Curry: for that picture [3304.93] Curry: Could do the only thing about traveling with big quads is that big quads I suppose and the seven inch is a bit more [3313.65] Curry: a [3314.73] Curry: Bit more hard to put any backpack than a five inch [3316.85] Curry: But look you can just put it in your back your case or whatever [3322.37] Koel: Yeah, I did wonder that like how like how much bigger is a seven inch on the five inches it considerable? [3328.73] Jack: Like is it is it canard? Is it advertising canards? [3334.61] Curry: I've got props. Let's have a look [3337.81] Koel: Like the prop sizes [3339.81] Koel: You know, it's obviously two inches more but like the frame itself [3344.81] Koel: I guess it's still the two in the arms are two inches longer I guess or [3350.53] Frank: The the arms will be an inch longer back and it's half an inch on either side. Ah true [3357.53] Curry: Okay, five inch drone seven inch drone [3364.8] Koel: We can't fit them all in well without okay without the props. It's not [3369.08] Koel: okay, it's it is bigger but [3371.8] Koel: It's not like this [3373.4] Curry: This is I think the difference as well is if you look at the body section for the top of the frame [3379.12] Curry: That is reasonably sure if you look at this one, it's very long so you can put like a lot on here [3385.24] Curry: This is designed to have like a GoPro there. Yeah, you can fit on two big batteries there [3389.84] Curry: Hmm, it's actually set up so you can put batteries on the bottom as well. Oh, wow [3394.28] Curry: The idea is you've got a choice of putting a top or bottom [3397.84] Curry: But it's it's fairly big [3401.72] Curry: It's got it's got big arms there and it's source. It's kind of dead cat style. So you don't see the [3408.04] Curry: the props and stuff in the view but they feel a lot bigger and they sound a lot different because they're [3415.96] Curry: They're different than these little guys and this this is quite chunky. This this would be a lovely quad if it [3422.08] Curry: It's a bit of a problem called it's [3425.88] Curry: Yeah, I don't know if I can ever trust it even if we get the new matters and flies [3431.44] Koel: Yeah, I thought you were having having a bit of a pain with it. Yeah [3436.2] Frank: Andy in the chat is recommending the fly Woo LR for it's a four-inch [3445.72] Frank: What sort of range you getting on the four-inch compared to [3452.0] Koel: See this is what I was kind of wondering too because I saw people talking about yeah like a four-inch ultralight [3459.12] Koel: Which I think this is what that is [3461.64] Koel: I [3464.67] Curry: Suppose your any problem there is do you want to take a GoPro with it if you have a naked GoPro? [3469.55] Curry: I don't have to have it. You're saying it was like good 30 minutes. That's a long time [3476.15] Koel: Yeah, which means that I'm gonna have to [3479.31] Koel: Yeah, I would have to do the whole naked GoPro thing [3483.19] Jack: No, he lives in the world of [3486.15] Jack: HD and [3489.51] Jack: Yeah, yeah, so he's getting HD footage anyway, yeah [3496.99] Koel: Yeah, see that's the thing is like as much as I want to just send it out and fly I [3503.23] Koel: Want good footage? [3505.67] Koel: like [3506.99] Koel: you know like [3509.29] UNKNOWN: I [3510.67] Koel: I'm not gonna fly out. Well me personally coming from a video background [3514.59] Koel: I don't want to send my drone out like you know X amount of kilometers into the friggin mountains and get this epic shot and [3520.51] Koel: Then I come home with analog DVR for my fat shark goggles [3524.23] Koel: You know what I mean like like it's it is cool [3526.83] Koel: And and I actually still love looking at my DVR and there's nothing wrong with it [3531.67] Koel: But having five point three K resolution video of that is like it's next level for me, I guess but [3539.07] Curry: Of course, you could just fly your DJI out there. It'd be a boring flight. It would still look pretty it would look it [3549.73] Koel: Well, yeah, it would look really great [3550.97] Koel: But how am I gonna how am I gonna dive down the side of a friggin mountain and then you know like sport made? [3562.21] Koel: Post-processing yeah. Yeah. Oh gosh. It's like [3566.57] Koel: Okay, let's let's tilt the gimbal down and then do some crazy Ken Burns zooms and yeah, it's FPV guys [3574.49] Jack: I swear cold cold trying to fly his near like Mavic [3581.29] Jack: before he got [3583.37] Jack: real quad oh [3586.45] Koel: The other thing too is and I know we're getting close to time but up in elevation [3593.65] Koel: You know the air is thinner right? So you have to adjust your PIDS and that type of stuff, right? It's [3600.57] Koel: From what I've heard and from what I've read it's [3603.61] Koel: you know the air is thinner the higher you go up so [3607.41] Koel: there's a lot of stuff you have to sort of I [3610.49] Curry: Think off-axis makes a different point about the wind up there [3614.21] Curry: Which is saying long-range in the mountains isn't for anything smaller than seven inch big drone [3618.33] Curry: The wind and air here will take you a little four inch want to be long-range drone to death [3623.93] Koel: Yeah, and that's kind of also what I heard when I talked to some local guys about about you know [3630.21] Koel: Going to ultra light four inch and they're like well [3632.69] Koel: you know [3634.37] Koel: Yes, you can [3636.13] Koel: but [3637.85] Koel: You know just like off-axis is saying the wind and stuff up there is pretty serious probably so and if he's in BC [3644.69] Koel: Then they mean I don't know quite how high the elevation gets there [3647.73] Koel: But I think the elevation to where I'm gonna be going is probably around like it's not like crazy [3652.77] Koel: maybe like between three and [3655.57] Koel: 6,000 [3658.57] Koel: You know is it a GL or is that [3662.65] Koel: Or meters I think [3665.33] Koel: Meters yeah, I gotta be meters. Yeah [3671.01] Curry: Seems quite a way up, but there's there's no hills round here that size no in the UK [3676.93] Curry: We're like well, that's that's that's foreign mountains. That is yeah. Yeah, we just got a little smooth lumps. Oh [3683.69] Koel: If the drones not doing 10 kilometers round trip, it's not long-range. Yeah [3690.97] Koel: Yeah, it's oh [3693.49] Koel: Man yeah, it's I'm like I'm excited scared and like very nervous at the same time [3699.85] Koel: But like I have to do it. There's something inside me being like [3704.17] Koel: Do it. It's like Shia LaBeouf is on my shoulder and he's just like [3707.93] Koel: Yeah, it just seems like such a like the taste that I've gotten of it [3713.61] Koel: It's it's a totally different feeling than just ripping around freestyling and we're cruising like it [3719.81] Koel: Once you send it out there your heart starts pumping in a different way. It's [3724.93] Koel: I don't know. It's crazy [3727.77] Curry: It's true and plus you get the the excitement of exploring. That's all we've got time for unfortunately [3735.33] Frank: We should give a shout outs of what's coming up in the next couple of weeks. Oh, yes [3739.89] Curry: We got next week. I forgot [3744.07] Frank: so we've got [3746.23] Frank: Mario FPV on next week talking about open IPC and [3751.87] Frank: potential future of open source HD FPV stuff and the following week we have [3758.39] Frank: Dave Allen talking about the alphabet soup of the BDRA and BMFA [3764.51] Frank: WDRC any MHC FPV [3769.83] Curry: Wow, that is impressive Frank and you've got all those letters out. Yep [3775.71] Frank: So yeah, we've got those to look forward to [3779.67] Jack: Sweet. Well, that's all we got time for. Thank you to all our lovely wonderful patreons. Keep this show on the [3787.11] Jack: Road, you've been enjoyed by everyone's favorite curry kitten [3792.87] Jack: Goodbye [3794.39] Jack: Lord of master and you say Frank. Bye [3797.91] Jack: My buddy go [3799.75] Jack: See ya, and I've been Brian telethon. I thank you. Good night [3804.59] UNKNOWN: Bye
