[65.92] Stephen: And our guest this week, Failsafe FPV who's going to be explaining Walk Snail and the new goggles amongst other things
[73.92] Stephen: He bravely ventured off to get a screwdriver before the show
[77.92] Failsafe: I haven't got the screwdriver, it's a bit tiny but it'll do
[81.92] Failsafe: It's a brave move
[83.92] Failsafe: Trying to get the goggles taken apart because one of the main things we were talking about pre-show was the replaceable VRX which is in the top part of the goggles
[97.92] Failsafe: So I'm trying to disassemble them but I'll quickly show you a little outline of the goggles
[103.92] Failsafe: I've got true RC antennas on them already
[107.92] Curry: Does it come with 4 stubby antennas now or does it not come with anything?
[111.92] Failsafe: They do indeed, yep
[113.92] Failsafe: They come with true RC
[115.92] Failsafe: Not true RC, more on about
[117.92] Failsafe: They come with 4 stubby antennas
[119.92] Stephen: They don't come with true RC or it'll be 50 bit more
[123.92] Failsafe: They've also got a little upgradeable patch antenna which you can put on the front as well
[129.92] Failsafe: These pieces here can easily be taken off and then you replace it with patch antennas
[135.92] Failsafe: Which is something we'll store, I think it's like 25 quid and you get these two patch antennas
[139.92] Failsafe: A bit like the Lumineer Axi antennas which you've got on DJI
[143.92] Failsafe: A bit like that but there's a bolt on to the front
[146.92] Failsafe: So are those colour changing?
[148.92] Failsafe: They are indeed, so if I go and see if I can go into the settings and change the colour
[152.92] Stephen: A tasteful on brand Aquamarine for LDO which is nice
[156.92] Failsafe: There we go, so they're blue
[158.92] Failsafe: And you can go to green
[160.92] Failsafe: And you've got red
[163.92] Failsafe: Oh you've got clothes
[165.92] Failsafe: Your menu option is clothes which I guess means off
[169.92] Stephen: I want the best video signal in the world and I don't want any kind of PWM noise around it

[178.92] Curry: So we were talking about, very briefly, the differences
[183.92] Curry: And one of the things we mentioned was the awful menu button is still the same
[187.92] Curry: But the other thing I was wondering is how is the fan in the original
[191.92] Curry: Although you seem to have fan low, fan high
[193.92] Curry: I can still get a bit of steaming up and I sometimes have to pull them off my face for a minute and let it settle
[198.92] Curry: Have you used them out in the world yet?
[200.92] Curry: Is it any better?
[202.92] Failsafe: Yeah I have, so a couple weekends ago now I went down to the White Cliffs of Dover
[207.92] Failsafe: And I was doing some cliff diving down there
[210.92] Failsafe: Which is just absolutely insane, the sort of views you get there
[214.92] Failsafe: The only problem with it was it was really windy
[218.92] Failsafe: Yeah I had a bit of an accident
[220.92] Failsafe: Just at least
[222.92] Failsafe: I lost the quad
[224.92] Failsafe: And I was diving down the cliffs
[226.92] Failsafe: And it didn't come back
[228.92] Failsafe: So yeah that's my full quad
[230.92] Failsafe: In the past
[232.92] Failsafe: Yeah
[234.92] Failsafe: Basically I did a cliff dive
[236.92] Failsafe: And in fairness it was my fault
[239.92] Failsafe: It was a stupid idea because it was windy
[241.92] Failsafe: We should have just said look we're going home now
[243.92] Failsafe: But I had two friends that come and travelled like two hours to fly this
[247.92] Failsafe: I was like I'm not going, well I want to at least do a cliff dive
[250.92] Failsafe: Being the showman
[252.92] Failsafe: So yeah I tried doing a cliff dive
[254.92] Failsafe: I did it a couple times, it was all good
[256.92] Failsafe: But the problem is we were quite at the top
[258.92] Failsafe: We didn't want to be quite near the edge of the cliff
[260.92] Failsafe: In case the wind, there was a sudden gust of wind
[262.92] Failsafe: Who went off the edge
[264.92] Failsafe: But yeah so the problem with it was we were kind of stood quite far back
[268.92] Failsafe: And it must have been, there was quite a gust of wind
[271.92] Failsafe: And then basically the quad de-synced
[273.92] Failsafe: And then yeah there's no way down the cliff
[276.92] Failsafe: Like the tide was in
[278.92] Failsafe: And also it was in a bit of an awkward place to get
[280.92] Failsafe: So still there
[282.92] Failsafe: So if anyone's in the white cliffs to Dover and sees a quad then it's probably mine
[287.92] Stephen: There you are
[289.92] Stephen: You just laid claim to any quad that might have landed on that 50 mile stretch of coastline
[294.92] Failsafe: I have some DVR footage I can share of it
[297.92] Failsafe: When we were in a bit
[299.92] Failsafe: But yeah it wasn't good
[301.92] Failsafe: But here we learn
[303.92] Failsafe: Yeah don't do stupid stuff down cliffs if it's stupidly windy
[306.92] Failsafe: So oh well
[308.92] Failsafe: But I was testing out the new 1080p 100FPS mode in these corals which they support
[313.92] Failsafe: I'm not too sure if they're coming to the standard ones, the three ones
[317.92] Failsafe: I know this definitely supports it
[319.92] Failsafe: And it was very nice I must say
[322.92] Failsafe: I've not done any penetration testing or anything through bandoes yet with it
[326.92] Failsafe: But if you're just cruising all the cliffs the quality is just ridiculous
[330.92] Failsafe: And on that 100FPS mode as well it's really good
[333.92] Failsafe: It's that bad
[334.92] Curry: You've induced some penetration testing
[336.92] Curry: And we found out it doesn't penetrate through a big cliff very well
[339.92] Failsafe: Oh yeah
[341.92] Failsafe: Well I don't know because it was not because I
[345.92] Failsafe: It did obviously fail so you know it didn't lose video at the bottom of it
[348.92] Failsafe: But as I was going down you would notice it started wobbling
[351.92] Failsafe: And I reckon something happened
[354.92] Failsafe: I don't know if it failed or saved
[356.92] Failsafe: I hope it didn't
[357.92] Failsafe: It's just rest for us
[358.92] Failsafe: But yeah I think it probably desynced I reckon
[361.92] Failsafe: Because it was all the wind and everything
[364.92] Failsafe: It was just oscillating just going forward when it would usually be perfectly fine
[368.92] Failsafe: Yeah
[369.92] Failsafe: And it was fine with gem fan S-bangs as well which are 4.9 inch props
[374.92] Failsafe: So not really a great deal of sort of frost really
[379.92] Failsafe: You know just responsive props
[381.92] Failsafe: But that sort of thing I think I'll be better off with a 5.1 inch prop
[385.92] Stephen: That made for smaller environments right
[387.92] Stephen: Really sudden acceleration in small spaces
[390.92] Failsafe: That's um
[391.92] Failsafe: Yeah
[392.92] Failsafe: Yeah
[393.92] Stephen: So just the 1080p mode
[396.92] Stephen: A lot of people mentioned the kind of smearing you get with some of the 720p
[400.92] Stephen: You can put it up to high bitrate
[402.92] Stephen: It didn't in the early firmware seem to really change much
[405.92] Stephen: But if you use 1080p does that help the smearing
[408.92] Stephen: Or does that just give it more smearing
[410.92] Stephen: Because there's more pixels to deal with
[413.92] Failsafe: I think the 1080p mode does better in smearing
[416.92] Failsafe: Because yeah I think it's just
[419.92] Failsafe: It seems to be
[421.92] Failsafe: It's a bit hard to explain because I have only been out once
[423.92] Failsafe: Keep in mind so I've not really done
[424.92] Failsafe: Sort of the environments where I noticed the smearing much
[427.92] Failsafe: Like in band nodes and things like that
[429.92] Failsafe: But yeah I think it's been pretty good compared to the 720p mode
[432.92] Failsafe: I'd much rather fly that than the 720p
[435.92] Failsafe: You know it's much different in latency either
[437.92] Failsafe: So it seems pretty consistent
[439.92] Failsafe: Which is good
[440.92] Failsafe: But yeah it seems alright
[442.92] Failsafe: I've not
[443.92] Failsafe: This is with the V2 and V2
[447.92] Failsafe: VTX
[448.92] Failsafe: So I've seen some couple of people complaining about the actual naming scheme of them
[452.92] Failsafe: You've got the V2
[453.92] Failsafe: Now you've got the V2 with dual antennas
[456.92] Failsafe: Yeah it's a bit of a confusing naming scheme they're going with
[459.92] Failsafe: But yeah they've just released a new one with dual antennas
[461.92] Failsafe: And apparently much better power
[465.92] Failsafe: I believe like power system in it
[467.92] Failsafe: Our VECs
[468.92] Failsafe: So it should handle 6S direct voltage better
[472.92] Failsafe: I mean I've not really had any issues with powering my things from 6S
[475.92] Failsafe: My VTXs
[476.92] Failsafe: I just hook them straight up to the battery pads
[478.92] Failsafe: But I do run a spike absorber and things like that
[480.92] Failsafe: So but yeah
[482.92] Stephen: I remember when we were over in Croatia
[484.92] Stephen: Someone got really unlucky
[486.92] Stephen: Hypo FPV and was just burning them out
[488.92] Stephen: Right left and center on 4S
[491.92] Failsafe: He's always got a good place though
[493.92] Failsafe: The calyx are really good at replacing them
[494.92] Failsafe: But yeah it's still not particularly great
[496.92] Failsafe: I'm not too sure what's going on there
[497.92] Failsafe: Because I think he even was powering them from a VEC as well
[500.92] Failsafe: Which is a bit worrying
[501.92] Failsafe: He's powering them from a VEC
[503.92] Stephen: No I think once he powered them from the VEC
[506.92] Stephen: He wasn't losing them
[507.92] Stephen: But he was before he used the VEC on 4S
[511.92] Failsafe: Right
[512.92] Stephen: But from build to build there can be massively varying amounts of noise
[516.92] Stephen: And some people crash a lot harder than others
[519.92] Stephen: And stuff like that so
[520.92] Failsafe: There's not variables in it
[522.92] Failsafe: Yeah
[523.92] Stephen: Well it's good to hear that there's a reason to go get them
[526.92] Stephen: If the 1080p mode is good
[529.92] Failsafe: Yeah
[530.92] Failsafe: I would say that if you currently got the V1 goggles
[534.92] Failsafe: Stick with them
[535.92] Failsafe: Like
[536.92] Failsafe: I've heard some people also complain about the optics on these as well
[539.92] Failsafe: I think Ian from MadSec was complaining about the optics
[542.92] Failsafe: They are slightly wider angle
[543.92] Failsafe: I believe they're 50 degrees
[544.92] Failsafe: Compared with I think it's 4S
[546.92] Failsafe: 45, 46 on the previous version
[548.92] Failsafe: Which you do notice
[550.92] Failsafe: I don't think that's a massive thing
[551.92] Failsafe: Because they are
[553.92] Failsafe: It's almost perfect in the V1 goggles
[557.92] Failsafe: Where you haven't got too much of that vision
[560.92] Failsafe: To sort of right near the edge of the lenses
[562.92] Failsafe: Yeah
[563.92] Stephen: They pushed it a bit closer to the edge of the lenses on those then
[566.92] Stephen: So if you've got your battery readout right down in the corner
[569.92] Stephen: You might suffer
[570.92] Stephen: Exactly
[571.92] Failsafe: But yeah
[572.92] Failsafe: I've not had any issues with the blurring edges
[575.92] Failsafe: It does depend on how the position on your face
[578.92] Failsafe: What I've ended up doing on mine
[579.92] Failsafe: Is I've actually got some of these little foam pads you can see here
[582.92] Failsafe: Which basically just push the
[584.92] Failsafe: Okay
[585.92] Failsafe: The goggles just close to my face
[587.92] Failsafe: They face further up
[588.92] Failsafe: Which helps
[589.92] Stephen: So you lose a bit of that FOV
[591.92] Stephen: But then you get clarity
[593.92] Failsafe: Yeah, yeah
[594.92] Failsafe: And you can actually see
[595.92] Failsafe: Because I sometimes had problems seeing like
[598.92] Failsafe: The very bottom
[599.92] Failsafe: Or you can see it
[600.92] Failsafe: But it just sort of
[602.92] Failsafe: Like you've got a bit of a gradient there
[604.92] Failsafe: Like where you can see the bottom of the lens on there
[606.92] Failsafe: But yeah
[607.92] Failsafe: It's not a problem at all
[608.92] Failsafe: I'm really happy with the optics overall
[610.92] Failsafe: And the new ones
[611.92] Failsafe: I thought
[612.92] Failsafe: It might be an issue but no
[613.92] Failsafe: It's fine
[614.92] Stephen: So you've got both sets
[615.92] Stephen: And do you find that you're always going for the V2s
[618.92] Stephen: Or you just kind of pick and choose
[620.92] Stephen: Or what's the deal?
[621.92] Failsafe: I'm pretty much fully sold on the V2s now
[624.92] Failsafe: Like the one thing which you're getting on these ones
[627.92] Failsafe: Is that HDMI input and output
[629.92] Failsafe: I've not tried the output
[630.92] Failsafe: But the input works flawlessly
[632.92] Failsafe: On the simulators
[634.92] Failsafe: So I'll plug it into my graphics card
[636.92] Failsafe: With HDMI
[637.92] Failsafe: And you can run the full 720p
[641.92] Failsafe: 100fps simulators on this
[644.92] Failsafe: So you're getting the full 100fps for it
[646.92] Stephen: 1080p 100?
[649.92] Failsafe: I did try 1080p
[651.92] Failsafe: Don't think that's working currently
[653.92] Failsafe: Oh, okay
[654.92] Failsafe: It might potentially work
[655.92] Failsafe: I don't know
[656.92] Failsafe: But yeah
[657.92] Failsafe: I did have problems with 720p like
[659.92] Failsafe: It was just
[660.92] Failsafe: I don't think that video was perfectly synced up with
[662.92] Failsafe: The refresh rate and the goggles and everything
[664.92] Failsafe: Yeah, it just didn't work
[665.92] Failsafe: So
[666.92] Failsafe: But that's an issue
[667.92] Failsafe: My configuration or the goggles
[668.92] Failsafe: I think
[669.92] Failsafe: It saves a stick with 720p and 100fps
[672.92] Failsafe: And it looks really good in the goggles
[674.92] Failsafe: No issues
[675.92] Failsafe: Oh, that's cool
[676.92] Failsafe: I was playing on Crash Simulator in them
[678.92] Failsafe: Yeah, it's really fun
[679.92] Stephen: I remember trying to use my Skyzone Sky04x
[682.92] Stephen: They're not bad goggles
[683.92] Stephen: And they are OLEDs
[684.92] Stephen: But trying to get computer games running on them
[688.92] Stephen: You realize that they aim for analog quality
[692.92] Stephen: And when you put the digital signal from the PC into them
[696.92] Stephen: Oh my god
[697.92] Stephen: Everything was just like either blindingly bright
[700.92] Stephen: Or just black
[701.92] Stephen: And I couldn't get the contrast working
[704.92] Stephen: It was a real struggle, unfortunately
[706.92] Stephen: I actually had a question
[708.92] Koel: Do they do both 16x9 and 4x3 in the goggles or...
[715.92] Failsafe: In terms of for analog
[717.92] Failsafe: What do you sort of mean by that?
[719.92] Failsafe: Do you mean by analog
[720.92] Failsafe: Or by the walk-through system itself?
[723.92] Failsafe: Yeah, just in general
[724.92] Koel: I guess for HD, I guess
[725.92] Koel: Since we're on the topic of each model

[731.92] Failsafe: So on analog
[732.92] Failsafe: Basically, you got the buttons here
[735.92] Failsafe: So you've got one here
[736.92] Failsafe: Which is your menu button
[738.92] Failsafe: And one's the back button
[739.92] Failsafe: And one's the record button

[741.92] Failsafe: So what you do
[742.92] Failsafe: You can press and hold one of these
[743.92] Failsafe: And it will switch between the inputs
[744.92] Failsafe: So you can then switch
[745.92] Failsafe: It will then firstly switch to HDMI input
[747.92] Failsafe: And then it will switch to your analog AV input
[749.92] Failsafe: And I believe the analog is 4x3
[751.92] Failsafe: So that's the native resolution of the analog input
[755.92] Failsafe: And yeah, you connect that up obviously with the jack port there
[759.92] Failsafe: I've already seen some people making these little things
[762.92] Failsafe: 3D printed mounts
[763.92] Failsafe: Where you can just clip on the front
[765.92] Failsafe: And then you can put analog more than that
[767.92] Failsafe: But yeah, that's 4x3 by default
[769.92] Failsafe: Not too sure if you can change that to 16x9
[771.92] Failsafe: I don't see why not
[772.92] Failsafe: It might work because I'm actually recognizing the input and then adjust
[775.92] Failsafe: But I've not tested analog yet

[778.92] Failsafe: You have 4x3 options in the settings
[781.92] Failsafe: So you can change the cameras to 4x3
[783.92] Failsafe: So say if you've got the Pro camera
[784.92] Failsafe: Which is 16x9 native resolution for the sensor, I believe
[788.92] Failsafe: You can change that to 4x3
[790.92] Failsafe: But all you're doing with that is you're cropping the edges
[792.92] Failsafe: So you're going to lose some of that field of view
[794.92] Failsafe: For 4x3 pilots though, they do do the V2 camera
[797.92] Failsafe: Which is a native 4x3 sensor
[799.92] Failsafe: But you're not getting that star of a sensor
[802.92] Failsafe: Which is what the Pro camera offers
[804.92] Failsafe: Which is pretty awesome
[806.92] Failsafe: Fair enough
[807.92] Koel: Yeah, I was just curious
[808.92] Koel: Like you said, the sensor itself is native 16x9
[812.92] Koel: Okay
[813.92] Koel: Yeah
[814.92] Failsafe: But I do think I'm probably going to be running the V2 camera from now on
[817.92] Failsafe: Because I do like the 4x3 aspect ratio
[820.92] Failsafe: Because you've got so much more like height
[824.92] Failsafe: Sort of horizontal field
[826.92] Failsafe: Is it horizontal? Vertical?
[827.92] Failsafe: Vertical field
[828.92] Failsafe: Vertical field resolution
[829.92] Failsafe: Yeah, you've got a lot more vertical field of view
[831.92] Failsafe: And I find that the Pro camera probably really good for like wings and stuff
[836.92] Failsafe: But in terms of actual freestyle, I think I prefer the V2
[839.92] Failsafe: Just simply because that increased field of view on the top and bottom
[842.92] Stephen: You spend a lot of time power looping, don't you?
[844.92] Stephen: So that kind of is literally a make or break
[848.92] Failsafe: And trippy spins and things like that
[850.92] Failsafe: When you're going upside down
[851.92] Failsafe: Definitely helps with that
[853.92] Koel: Yeah, I don't know if I could get used to 16x9 in the goggles
[856.92] Koel: I feel like on the GoPro is fine in the end
[859.92] Koel: But I don't know, there's something about having that
[862.92] Koel: You know, more of a square aspect ratio
[865.92] Stephen: It depends how much you've actually got in degrees, right?
[868.92] Stephen: So if you've got a decent amount of degrees vertically, it's okay
[872.92] Stephen: But if you're already suffering with the vertical field of view
[875.92] Stephen: Then 16x9 can be a bit of a pain
[878.92] Failsafe: And I think the V2 goggles as well for 4x3 pilots
[881.92] Failsafe: Are going to be better because they've got slightly increased field of view
[883.92] Failsafe: So they've got 50 degree field of view
[886.92] Failsafe: Compared with like 45 or 46 on the V1s
[889.92] Failsafe: Which then gives you that, you know, more height
[892.92] Failsafe: Yeah, there's many more on the camera
[894.92] Stephen: Because obviously like if you've got a massive, say, 100 degree field of view on the camera vertically
[900.92] Stephen: And then you're cropping it down to get 16x9
[903.92] Stephen: It's not so bad
[905.92] Stephen: If you've got like only a 75 degree field of view on the camera
[908.92] Stephen: Then, you know, cropping it, you're going to lose a lot
[912.92] Stephen: They don't really give stats on that
[914.92] Stephen: You talk about the goggle field of view quite a lot
[916.92] Stephen: We used to look at the lenses
[918.92] Stephen: And with analog cameras
[920.92] Stephen: You knew that sensors are pretty much identical
[922.92] Stephen: And you used to have to look at the lens sizes
[924.92] Stephen: But do you know what kind of field of view you get from the walk-smell cameras?
[928.92] Curry: Erm...
[930.92] Failsafe: It's not something I've really researched, Arthur
[932.92] Failsafe: No, don't worry, man
[933.92] Failsafe: We can read the dark pages
[935.92] Failsafe: No, I know, but it's more about the...
[937.92] Curry: I feel like they only give the horizontal number anyway
[940.92] Curry: They go ultra wide and they always have that sort of...
[942.92] Curry: It's a bigger number
[943.92] Curry: Triangle going that way, don't they?
[944.92] Curry: They never talk about how much vertical space you've got
[947.92] Jack: As long as they're not as bad as the Dominator V3s
[950.92] Jack: Because I had those and they were absolutely terrible
[953.92] Jack: I've still got mine
[954.92] Curry: Those are my analog goggles
[958.92] Stephen: I was up in the loft the other day and I found where I put my quantum cyclops
[964.92] Stephen: Diversity box goggles
[967.92] Curry: From Hobbyking
[969.92] Curry: Mmm, quality product
[971.92] Jack: Yeah, what neoprene did they have?
[974.92] Jack: Neoprene cover
[975.92] Stephen: Oh, it was a hard plastic shell
[977.92] Stephen: It had really, really awful foam
[979.92] Stephen: Like the sort of foam that is normally just packing foam
[984.92] Stephen: But yeah, I wore them for probably two years
[987.92] Stephen: Something like that
[988.92] Stephen: If I completely bit the dust
[990.92] Jack: What went on them?
[995.26] Stephen: What went on them?
[996.26] Stephen: Yeah
[998.26] Stephen: I was flying tiny whoops and stuff
[1000.26] Stephen: It was like going from brushed whoops to like 75mm brushless
[1005.26] Stephen: And then I had a QAV-105 and some E-Sheen dodgy stuff
[1014.26] Koel: You know what's so strange about having all this super ultra wide angle view
[1018.26] Koel: Everybody wants that in their goggles
[1020.26] Koel: I personally found that I actually like a more narrow view in the FPV
[1024.26] Koel: So I can actually like, you know, more focus in
[1027.26] Koel: But I can see so much on the sides
[1029.26] Koel: I find like can sometimes be distracting
[1031.26] Koel: Whereas like if you have a smaller field of view
[1034.26] Koel: Just like maybe on the lens of the actual say analog FPV camera
[1038.26] Koel: I found that I don't know
[1040.26] Koel: I can just see better
[1041.26] Koel: I guess as far as towards where I'm going
[1043.26] Koel: Opposed to seeing so much on the outsides of where I'm looking
[1047.26] Stephen: I kind of assumed there was a right and a wrong answer

[1150.92] Failsafe: So apparently, according to him, it's end of life

[1156.92] Failsafe: I've heard the same thing
[1157.92] Stephen: The chipset itself is the AR9201
[1161.92] Stephen: Which is in all the Walksdale kits so far

[1168.92] Stephen: So the current kind of explanation is that obviously
[1172.92] Stephen: CADX, Walksdale have bought up a whole heap of chipsets
[1175.92] Stephen: So they've got enough of this AR9201 to make a whole bunch of equipment
[1180.92] Stephen: But they know that at some point
[1182.92] Stephen: They're not going to be able to get that chipset
[1184.92] Stephen: And there's going to be a new chipset that they have to buy instead
[1187.92] Stephen: So they're going to work obviously to integrate that new chipset
[1190.92] Stephen: To offer a new line of products
[1192.92] Stephen: Which are going to be from the looks of it
[1195.92] Stephen: They're going to try and make the backwards compatible
[1197.92] Stephen: They've made a lot of noise about compatibility in the past
[1203.92] Stephen: But there might be some new features there as well

[1207.92] Failsafe: So you see this one here, the third generation back from 2018
[1211.92] Failsafe: That is what apparently is in the current system
[1214.92] Failsafe: So the AR9201, which is what Stephen just mentioned about

[1227.92] Failsafe: It looks like it could go up to 6 or 7 gigahertz

[1232.92] Failsafe: And yeah, so this is basically a new chipset out

[1254.92] Failsafe: Going to be doing an upgraded board for the goggles

[1281.92] Stephen: But that's what they're suggesting it's capable of as a baseline

[1286.92] Stephen: Obviously there's a ton of engineering that goes into the amplifiers
[1289.92] Stephen: And whatever else they actually put with it
[1291.92] Stephen: That is going to affect that
[1293.92] Stephen: But we could be looking at an uplift of 25%, something like that
[1302.81] Stephen: And also an increase in bitrate as well
[1304.81] Stephen: Which might give the encoder a bit of a break
[1307.81] Stephen: And also I've heard that actually the encoder is kind of CPU bound on these as well
[1313.81] Stephen: So they want to obviously use H.265
[1316.81] Stephen: And they want to get 100 frames a second
[1318.81] Stephen: That means they don't have a lot of CPU time on each frame
[1322.81] Stephen: And that means they can't do a lot of really, really nice encoding
[1326.81] Stephen: They're forced to just get it done
[1328.81] Stephen: So we've got things like trying to balance smearing with delay and so on and so forth
[1333.81] Stephen: If a new chipset comes out that would be a silver bullet for a lot of those problems

[1344.81] Failsafe: The amount of top technology that's in this tiny little board

[3179.7] Curry: It's like you find a safe place
[3181.7] Curry: If you're in a big field, you need to understand what your minimum distance is, which is part of the setting
[3189.7] Curry: So you need to go beyond that and activate it on a switch and see if it behaves
[3195.7] Curry: And then you need to try it for real by turning off your radio to see if it goes into the same fail-safe
[3201.7] Curry: And make sure you can turn the radio on and bring it back again
[3204.7] Curry: Every time I'm going to go out far and I'm about to fly off, I will do a quick, let's put it into rescue mode
[3213.7] Curry: Just to make sure it turns around and comes about the right way before I fly again on every flight
[3218.7] Curry: Therefore, I know if it does go right, it's working
[3220.7] Curry: But I haven't ever had to use rescue mode in anger yet

[3227.7] Failsafe: I'm yet to try rescue mode, I've never tried it
[3230.7] Failsafe: But I've seen it in action and the latest update as well, where it lands as well, that is so cool

[3236.7] Curry: My question is that it likes to disarm for about 12 feet and try and hit me
[3241.7] Stephen: It tries to guess when you're near the deck based on when it thinks you've bumped something
[3246.7] Stephen: But if your quad's a bit wobbly to start with, it thinks it's bumped something just coming down through its prop wash
[3252.7] Curry: That sounds like a landing
[3255.7] Stephen: It's like, am I less than X meters away from the height where I took off
[3259.7] Stephen: And have I registered something that feels like a bump
[3262.7] Stephen: Well, let's disarm
[3264.7] Curry: The thing is, unless someone's taken your radio and smashed it onto the ground, you'll never need that bit
[3269.7] Curry: Because if you've lost video signal or radio signal, as it's returning, that will come back
[3276.7] Curry: And then you can take control again and come back and land it
[3279.7] Curry: So unless something's going to really badly wrong with your radio, you don't have to think about it landing or just falling
[3286.7] Curry: I mean, I prefer to fall close by near my feet than out in the distance, that's something

[3332.7] Stephen: So if you want and you're really confident in your quad, you can like make it a total rocket ship
[3337.7] Stephen: And have it fly back to you at very high throttle if you want to impress your friends and terrify people
[3344.7] Curry: It feels like we need some balance to this coming back perfectly
[3348.7] Curry: So here's my rescue mode on
[3351.7] Stephen: Wasn't this the one where bits were falling off your quad?
[3353.7] Curry: No, no, no, no, this is a well-behaved product
[3356.7] Curry: There it is, it's coming down
[3358.7] Curry: It's like, yeah, this is looking good
[3360.7] Curry: At that point it seems to turn like it wants to hurt me
[3363.7] Curry: And start circling me like a hawk

[3367.7] Curry: I don't think it's there and it's like, how do

[3413.7] Curry: With Caroline, who's in the chat, who was trying GPS rescue mode and has a compass on her one
[3419.7] Curry: And she said there was this option in it where it says use magnetometer

[3424.7] Curry: So she assumed it would use it and I was like, I don't know if it does

[3429.7] Stephen: I'll show you why you don't want to use the magnetometer in Betaflight
[3435.7] Stephen: Because, you know, in iFlight you have to kind of spin around and do all these kind of weird flips and things with a quad, right?
[3446.7] Stephen: You have to turn it on one side and then spin it around each axis
[3449.7] Stephen: Yes, to do the calibration
[3451.7] Stephen: Right
[3452.7] Stephen: So the reason you have to do that is to calibrate the mag
[3455.7] Stephen: So the mag knows like where the strongest signal is in each axis
[3460.7] Stephen: You don't do that in Betaflight because people just didn't bother to do the calibration code for it
[3466.7] Stephen: If you want to calibrate it, the recommendation is to read this page, all of it, twice
[3474.7] Stephen: And understand how to calibrate and then do a bunch of maths on the back of an envelope
[3481.7] Stephen: And figure it out
[3482.7] Stephen: No
[3483.7] Stephen: How many people do you think read this page before using the magnetometer?
[3487.7] Curry: Let's start reading it and then say, oh, this isn't an update
[3491.7] Stephen: Calibration values are saved in the mag calibration parameter

[3498.7] Stephen: When was the last person, last time anyone typed anything into the mag calibration parameter?

[3510.7] Stephen: Yeah, that's why we advise people don't enable the mag unless you really know you need it
[3515.7] Stephen: Because unless you've calibrated it, it'll like totally misinform the rest of the rescue procedure

[3523.7] Stephen: It's like having a drunk in the back of the car shouting, go that way

[3552.39] Curry: So at your point, you have like minus 100 meters, it would have gone up to 20 meters or whatever

[3559.39] Curry: It might have hit the cliff on the way, of course
[3564.39] Failsafe: I was just thinking if the motors would have, because I think the whole, I think the motor's de-synced

[3571.39] Stephen: If it was really highly tuned, yeah, you might have just had a bit of a freak out
[3575.39] Curry: If it probably de-synced, they just, I've only ever seen de-sync flying along and just hit the floor

[3706.39] Stephen: But then, sometimes when you're doing your spins, it'll just be smooth
[3712.39] Stephen: And then chop, chop, chop, like it's dropped a bunch of frames
[3715.39] Stephen: I always wonder, am I about to lose signal, and then it'll be fine
[3720.39] Stephen: Just every now and then it drops frames, or it has jitter, and it just feels very well
[3725.39] Failsafe: I'm not much experienced with it to know that, but I know I did fly it
[3730.39] Failsafe: We did a back-to-back sort of comparison in Croatia when we were there
[3734.39] Failsafe: We flew behind the entire house where the swimming pool was
[3737.39] Failsafe: And O3 was pretty much flawless
[3739.39] Failsafe: I mean, you did notice the latency creased a little bit
[3743.39] Failsafe: But it's pretty much flawless, there's no stuttering

[3748.39] Failsafe: Whereas Avatar, you flew around that
[3750.39] Failsafe: And it definitely wasn't as good, don't lie
