[214.81] Stephen: So flying vehicles and such, what's everyone been up to?

[236.81] Curry: And I had, I think the best conditions I've had to fly it.

[245.81] Curry: I was trying to figure out why this was better than the previous times.
[250.81] Curry: I've been out flying.
[253.81] Curry: Yeah, there it is.
[254.81] Curry: And it's a sort of combination of getting the right light
[259.81] Curry: and the very nice beater firmware on the walks now.
[265.81] Curry: And everything just looked so much clearer and so much sharper.
[269.81] Curry: This is actually the internal recording in 1080p.

[274.81] Curry: But I was able to pick out everything.
[276.81] Curry: I think because all the colors were different, it really helped.
[279.81] Curry: You know, if you go over grass, grass can sort of smoosh together.
[282.81] Curry: This was just looking really good at a really good time.
[286.81] Stephen: This is better with light and dark than it does
[290.81] Stephen: when everything's kind of the same brightness level.
[292.81] Stephen: When you've got a nice strong light, it works really well.
[295.81] Curry: Yeah, it actually looked really good.
[296.81] Curry: The sun was lighting up all the wetness on the floor.
[300.81] Curry: We had this one, I think this was last Friday.
[305.81] Curry: And it was like one day when it wasn't raining.
[308.81] Curry: But if I crashed, there was enough puddles around to seriously do me in.
[314.81] Curry: But yeah, I had a good time with that one.

[318.81] Koel: You didn't know about that new feature?
[320.81] Koel: It's a new walks now feature.
[323.81] Frank: If you're the intermediary of frames,
[325.81] Frank: you'll have to go check out Curry's YouTube show.

[329.81] Stephen: I don't think anyone's got to the bottom of the mystery.
[332.81] Stephen: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work.

[338.81] Curry: I did six batteries on that.
[340.81] Curry: And I managed to get this thing 400 meters away from myself
[345.81] Curry: without the tiny little antenna dying.
[348.81] Curry: Although I did notice, because normally I just put my ERS power on 100
[353.81] Curry: and I sort of see how it goes.
[355.81] Curry: And I put it on dynamic power and it kept going up to like one watt.
[359.81] Curry: As soon as you get like a little bit out, it's like,
[361.81] Curry: oh, it's dropping a bit, I'm going to up the power.
[365.81] Stephen: Did you have one of those little plastic antennas
[368.81] Stephen: or the little kind of one inch long bit?
[370.81] Curry: It's a tiny little piece of copper that just sticks up off the board.
[373.81] Curry: It's so small, there's nothing there.
[376.81] Curry: But yeah, it looked really good.
[378.81] Curry: I had a really good time.
[379.81] Curry: It's the first time I've been sort of like, wow, this is it now.

[385.81] Curry: But it just needs the right flight, I think.

[389.81] Curry: If you're just flying over a field, you don't really get the details, do you?
[392.81] Curry: You have to be around the leaves and there's, you know,

[415.81] Stephen: but just a two inch with a little 3D printed canopy
[420.81] Stephen: and it takes kind of 450 to us.
[423.81] Stephen: Gave that a quick, quick thrash around the house.

[428.81] Stephen: It does make me feel a bit sad that I can't fly anything bigger
[431.81] Stephen: because, you know, it feels like a whoop.
[435.81] Stephen: And also flying this around the house,
[437.81] Stephen: you kind of knock stuff off tables quite easily,
[440.81] Stephen: which is irritating.
[443.81] Stephen: You kind of trace your course by the bits of paper
[445.81] Stephen: that have been flying around the house.

[448.81] Curry: Mine was 1S but 550s.
[450.81] Curry: It kind of, it balanced out the power to weight ratio
[453.81] Curry: much better for in the house.
[455.81] Curry: So, you know, sometimes you get these little whoops
[457.81] Curry: and they're just a little bit spicy
[459.81] Curry: and you have to tune it way down for all and stuff.
[462.81] Curry: This did okay.
[463.81] Curry: It doesn't, there's a compromise.
[465.81] Curry: It doesn't go like mega crazy outside.

[470.81] Curry: and I almost did an intake of breath, I think.

[474.81] Curry: It was pretty heavy.

[476.81] Curry: And we're into the prop wash and we're going down,

[479.81] Curry: It's like full throttle pulling out.

[486.81] Frank: I went and visited a local BMFA club at their field.
[492.81] Frank: It was only 10 minutes away from me.
[494.81] Frank: So, you know, I thought I should have discovered it
[498.81] Frank: not through the BMFA but through a local Facebook group
[503.81] Frank: and sort of some dog walker going, what's going on over there.
[507.81] Frank: And that's how I found out about it.
[509.81] Frank: I got in touch with them, went along and visited them.
[513.81] Frank: And they do have restrictions on FPV and drones.
[520.81] Frank: But I think it's kind of fair enough
[523.81] Frank: because what it is is they're in the middle of an army range
[529.81] Frank: and the army get a bit unhappy about embers and things around them.
[535.81] Frank: So they're quite happy flying, you know,
[537.81] Frank: you're flying line of sight around there,
[539.81] Frank: but they're not so happy about becoming along with a load of,
[545.81] Frank: I think they call it signals acquisition equipment,
[549.81] Frank: is what they call it.
[551.81] Stephen: Sounds like a term pulled straight out of the 1940s.
[554.81] Frank: Yeah, exactly.
[556.81] Frank: So yeah, so not a place for FPV,
[559.81] Frank: but it was a very good place to fly a load of sight,
[565.81] Frank: big open space, you don't get bothered by dog walkers there all day.
[571.81] Stephen: You've also been very efficient and sort of jumped on an idea
[575.81] Stephen: that we were throwing around in the private chat.

[581.81] Frank: Yeah, we've officially affiliated,
[587.81] Frank: or at least the LDO virtual club has affiliated with the BMFA
[592.81] Frank: and has 20 million pounds worth of liability insurance.

[657.81] Stephen: like figuring out how to monetize YouTube videos
[661.81] Stephen: and all that stuff that requires a bank account and things.
[664.81] Curry: Not to have a weird tax and money laundering accusations from PayPal.
[669.81] Stephen: Yeah, instead of them thinking that we're some kind of tax scam,
[675.81] Stephen: we can be realized as the barely breaking even long running institution
[680.81] Stephen: that we are more like a five or side football team
[683.81] Stephen: than any sort of real enterprise.
[686.81] Stephen: So that's what we're aiming to do there.
[689.81] Frank: And in my official position as secretary in BMFA delegates,
[694.81] Frank: I'm interested to see what kind of extra information they feed out to clubs
[702.81] Frank: and how kind of clubs are involved with things,
[704.81] Frank: particularly clubs were mentioned at the consultation recently.

[718.81] Frank: the side of things that I get excited about and no one else does,
[722.81] Frank: I might get some more information.
[724.81] Frank: It's another line of information so I'm interested.

[1025.81] Koel: I do have all my 3D prints, though,
[1028.81] Koel: so I've got a GPS mount,
[1031.81] Koel: a bard pole with an SMA there,
[1034.81] Koel: a little camera mount thing on the front,
[1036.81] Koel: a crossfire on the front there,
[1039.81] Koel: a couple little pads and whatnot,
[1041.81] Koel: but I'm actually...
[1043.81] Koel: You know what's really nice is that
[1044.81] Koel: it's Black Friday sales right now,
[1046.81] Koel: so I'm going to be buying a T-motor 55-amp ESC,
[1051.81] Koel: and what else was I going to buy?

[1057.81] Koel: There was something else that is very important to my build.

[1090.81] Koel: I still want to buy one of those little GPS mates
[1093.81] Koel: that will power the GPS before I plug in and stuff.

[1099.81] Koel: that they just plug their USB cord
[1103.81] Koel: into their flight controller,
[1105.81] Koel: just give it five volt and then...
[1108.81] Koel: Yep, that was me.
[1109.81] Stephen: Ah, okay, yep.
[1111.81] Stephen: You can just use a power bank.
[1112.81] Stephen: The only thing you need to do is to make sure
[1114.81] Stephen: that your GPS is connected to one of the pads
[1117.81] Stephen: that get power when you plug in USB,
[1119.81] Stephen: like you do with your receiver, for example.
[1121.81] Curry: Yeah, it's because some of them don't necessarily,
[1123.81] Curry: so as long as you try it at home and see,
[1126.81] Curry: it's the best way.
[1127.81] Koel: Yeah, yeah.
[1129.81] Koel: Yeah, so that's...
[1130.81] Koel: I mean, at the same time, too,
[1132.81] Koel: what's the most it's going to take
[1134.81] Koel: to acquire SATs on a cold start?
[1136.81] Koel: You know, maybe a couple of minutes,
[1138.81] Koel: maybe five, ten minutes at the very worst?
[1141.81] Curry: Well, the only thing you need to do
[1143.81] Curry: is try it out before you go,
[1145.81] Curry: just to make sure you get them.
[1147.81] Curry: And then you're good.
[1149.81] Curry: Sometimes you get a situation where,
[1151.81] Curry: for some reason, some of the wiring
[1153.81] Curry: or one of the things completely
[1155.81] Curry: wipes out the signal on GPS.
[1157.81] Curry: I literally had a GPS that was fine.
[1159.81] Curry: I put a new flight controller in it,
[1161.81] Curry: like no SATs, until I wrapped it in copper tape
[1164.81] Curry: and then grounded the copper tape to a ground,
[1167.81] Curry: and then it's okay.
[1169.81] Curry: It was ridiculous.
[1171.81] Curry: Yeah, electrical noise and stuff, I guess, right?
[1174.81] Stephen: Do you ground the copper tape
[1176.81] Stephen: to the ground pad on the GPS,
[1178.81] Stephen: or you just ground it at the FC end?
[1180.81] Curry: Just grounded it at the FC end.
[1182.81] Curry: I think that the ground's all common anyway.
[1184.81] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[1185.81] Frank: Okay.
[1186.81] Frank: The other thing to be aware of with GPS
[1188.81] Frank: is that if you travel halfway around the world,
[1192.81] Frank: you might have some issues.
[1194.81] Koel: Yeah.
[1195.81] Frank: It starts off going,
[1197.81] Frank: well, last I was on, I was in this location,
[1200.81] Frank: and at this time, I would expect to see
[1202.81] Frank: these satellites on these frequencies.
[1204.81] Frank: It's going to rebuild it on my neck.
[1206.81] Frank: And then it's going to look for those,
[1208.81] Frank: and it's going to be like,
[1209.81] Frank: I can't get any of these satellites,
[1210.81] Frank: and it's going to be waiting for ages
[1212.81] Frank: before it then goes,
[1213.81] Frank: oh, I'll try again and just start from scratch
[1216.81] Frank: and work out what satellites I can actually see.
[1220.81] Frank: So it will take a bit longer the first time
[1222.81] Frank: to power it on somewhere else in the world.
[1225.81] Koel: Yeah.
[1226.81] Koel: Oh, it looks like EBR said,
[1228.81] Koel: yeah, EUArts 1 and 3 on the Ultra have 5 volts from USB,
[1231.81] Koel: so I can just do that.
[1232.81] Koel: Cool.
[1233.81] Koel: Yeah.
[1234.81] Koel: I will be running Ultra for this long-range quad.
[1237.81] Koel: It's going to be crazy.
[1239.81] Koel: It's going to be really cool.

[1319.81] Koel: He's actually from my neck of the woods in Ontario.

[1324.81] Koel: I like almost like praise him as like a long range God.

[1329.81] Koel: you know, they are my masters are like, you know,
[1332.81] Koel: like I look up to them as, you know, something that, you know,
[1335.81] Koel: people that are doing what I would want to do.
[1337.81] Koel: So it's just really cool that I've been able to connect with them

[1474.81] Koel: Cause they're all, they don't have crazy C rating,

[1479.81] Stephen: I guess if you get a bad sell on just a 6S1 P pack,
[1482.81] Stephen: it's pretty trivial to say, oh yeah,
[1484.81] Stephen: it's that, that battery right there.
[1487.81] Stephen: And just yoink it out as a 2P.
[1489.81] Stephen: You're like, it's one of these, one of these is not happy.

[1493.81] Curry: It's interesting to think about two of them though.
[1496.81] Curry: They're pretty heavy and I'm interested to know what,
[1499.81] Curry: what are the gains you get in time versus the loss you get in weight?

[1506.81] Curry: 20 minutes is what I figured on my one.

[1545.81] Koel: all the amps that you're drawing from your throttle or from your motors,

[1552.81] Koel: it's all relying on that one battery.
[1554.81] Koel: Whereas if you have two,
[1555.81] Koel: it like it's kind of spread out instead of you pulling say 20 amps off
[1559.81] Koel: one pack, you're pulling kind of like 10 off each.

[1563.81] Koel: So it sort of spreads it a little more.
[1565.81] Koel: It's a little more forgiving on the, um,
[1567.81] Koel: on the lithium ion side of things.

[1957.77] Stephen: which are good for 35 amp burst each.

[1963.77] Stephen: I guess.

[1965.77] Stephen: And come in at 97 watt hour.

[1968.77] Stephen: there's a limit typically of a hundred hour battery that you can take

[1975.77] Stephen: but if she built those out as six S two P,

[1980.77] Stephen: 190 something watt hour and would be illegal to take on according to the

[1989.77] Koel: Like you just make sure they're not connected with the.

[1993.77] Stephen: If then if you've got just a whole bunch of loose cells,

[1997.77] Stephen: But then you're going to be up against the fact that you can only take 20
[2000.77] Stephen: batteries on some airlines and a BA is less,

[2005.77] Stephen: And so you then each one of those would then count towards accounts and

[2010.77] Stephen: So instead of taking two packs,
[2012.77] Stephen: you are now taking 12 packs on and then you've got to take your lithium ion
[2016.77] Stephen: cells and maybe USB power bank and phones and tablets as well.

[2490.77] Curry: It's not a very good FPV camera.
[2491.77] Curry: It's quite an impressive action camera.
[2494.77] Curry: The best head-to-head I've seen so far,
[2497.77] Curry: and it's kind of their flex where they're using AI.
[2500.77] Curry: And it's about low-light performance.
[2503.77] Curry: So they put a GoPro and the new, what's it called,
[2507.77] Curry: Ace Pro on a mountain bike as the sun was setting in low light.
[2513.77] Curry: And they put their auto-stabilization on.
[2515.77] Curry: And of course, they had to crank the ISO way up.
[2519.77] Curry: And the difference was that there's this special AI,
[2523.77] Curry: which is trying to sort out the picture so it didn't look all grainy,
[2530.77] Curry: was basically it was able to expose at a decent frame rate.
[2535.77] Curry: So you know, obviously, it was low light.
[2538.77] Curry: The ISO is up high.
[2539.77] Curry: So whenever they sort of showed a freeze frame,
[2543.77] Curry: the GoPro is like this big smear of blurriness.
[2547.77] Curry: And every time the Insta was absolutely solid, absolutely rock solid.
[2554.77] Curry: So it had no noise on this very high ISO rate.
[2557.77] Curry: And it was able to expose and get a very quick frame rate,
[2560.77] Curry: even though it didn't have enough light,
[2562.77] Curry: which is quite a nice way of using AI, I guess.
[2565.77] Curry: Yeah, they probably have some noise reduction.
[2568.77] Koel: I'm sure they're using some kind of like AI noise reduction in real time.
[2573.77] Koel: And then that's pretty cool.
[2575.77] Koel: Yeah, because that is a problem.
[2577.77] Koel: If you want to shoot in 60p or something,
[2580.77] Koel: or 120 frames per second in the evening,
[2583.77] Koel: you're supposed to have your shutter speed double that
[2585.77] Koel: because these cameras, their sensors are so small
[2588.77] Koel: that once you start boosting that ISO to have that shutter speed,
[2591.77] Koel: it's just a, you know...
[2593.77] Stephen: With this guy, it had a decent sensor,
[2595.77] Stephen: which is probably doing a lot of that work for you, right?
[2598.77] Stephen: Just getting a larger catchment area for those photons to hit.
[2602.77] Stephen: You don't have to worry about so many tricks.
[2605.77] Curry: It's got another weird thing, which its sensor is 8K,
[2608.77] Curry: but it films in 4K.
[2610.77] Curry: But it means if you then zoom in,
[2612.77] Curry: you will then use a proper 4K thing.
[2615.77] Curry: So you can still zoom in and get 4K,
[2617.77] Curry: or otherwise you've got the 8K,
[2619.77] Curry: and it does like the pixel averaging to make sure
[2621.77] Curry: there's no dodgy bits about it to get there.
[2624.77] Curry: It looks like a fantastic action camera,
[2627.77] Curry: but too heavy to put in a quad like all the other action cameras have been,
[2630.77] Curry: just lately.
[2631.77] Koel: Yeah.
[2632.77] Koel: It sounds like they're doing something similar
[2634.77] Koel: to what Sony does with their mirrorless cameras.
[2636.77] Koel: Not all of them, but a lot of times their sensors are, you know,
[2639.77] Koel: high resolution, and their video footage is oversampled.
[2642.77] Koel: Their 4K is oversampled, say, from a 6K or an 8K sensor,
[2647.77] Koel: and it just gives it a way sharper and more detailed image,
[2650.77] Koel: and you can punch in and it doesn't...

[2653.77] Koel: You don't lose sort of quality and stuff, yeah.
[2655.77] Stephen: There was a company doing this on mobile phones ages ago as well.
[2658.77] Stephen: They figured that they could put a giant high megapixel sensor on there,
[2661.77] Stephen: and they called it pixel binning,
[2663.77] Stephen: where they just take four pixels,
[2665.77] Stephen: average it into one output pixel.
[2668.77] Koel: I'm guessing, I think that's probably Sony Xperia, maybe.

[3421.07] Koel: Basically, we had to snap the standoff slash the bolt that was in there.

[3430.07] Koel: but it didn't even leave a mark on the carbon.
[3432.07] Koel: I went to my buddies.
[3433.07] Koel: I was like, man, I think you can help me out.
[3435.07] Koel: Do you have any ideas?
[3436.07] Koel: Because a few people didn't really know what to do.
[3439.07] Koel: So, he literally just grabbed some crazy pliers.
[3443.07] Koel: They're like the thick pliers.
[3445.07] Koel: He kind of just went like this and just wrenched on it.

[3449.07] Koel: Within like 10 seconds, my problem that was happening for like a week was solved.

[3461.07] Koel: Trust me, it's not my first time having a stripped bolt with a standoff.

[3471.07] Stephen: I try and get like two pairs of pliers and like clamp one round the bolt head
[3475.07] Stephen: and one on the standoff.

[3477.07] Koel: One problem was that it was a recessed bolt.

[3483.07] Koel: Yeah, I couldn't get a hold of the end of it.
[3486.07] Koel: And I'm like, oh, maybe there's too much loctite or maybe there's this.
[3490.07] Koel: So, I like was heating it up and trying this, trying that.
[3493.07] Koel: But, you know, what I thought my next step was was like somehow cutting a notch
[3498.07] Koel: in the head of the bolt and like, you know, making a flat head basically out of it.
[3503.07] Koel: But, yeah, I went to my buddies.
[3505.07] Koel: He's like, nope, just...
[3507.07] Koel: Boom.
[3508.07] Koel: Yeah.
[3509.07] Koel: I got very lucky.
