Massive thank you to. [14.0] Jack: Carlos Campos. [16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner. [18.0] Stephen: Sam Dahmer. [20.0] Koel: On with the show. [22.0] Koel: Let's Drone Out. [52.26] Stephen: Hello and welcome to another episode of Let's Drone Out. [56.26] Stephen: Episode 435, that awkward time between Christmas and New Year, brought to you by our overlord and master Frank. [65.26] Stephen: Good evening. [67.26] Stephen: And of course, our helpful long range Canadian, Cole. [72.26] Stephen: Howdy. [73.26] Stephen: And myself, Stephen, with a dumb mustache. [76.26] Stephen: With a slightly out of focus camera. [79.26] Stephen: Let me just let me just do that. We were just focusing on Kat before the show. So Kat got a focal. [86.26] Stephen: Yeah, I've I've been enjoying covered. [91.26] Stephen: The new seasonal craze that just keeps coming back. [95.26] Stephen: I think I'm just about out of the woods now. [97.26] Stephen: But my word, it was a long Christmas. [100.26] Stephen: It was a slug to get through. [102.26] Stephen: What have you guys been up to? [104.26] Koel: Beautiful present. Yeah, I'm giving. [108.26] Frank: Yeah, I seem to be the only person I know who doesn't have covered at the moment. [112.26] Frank: So I was hunkering down and avoiding everyone avoiding human contact. [117.26] Koel: That's a very good plan. [120.26] Frank: I've been through that. I've done it before. I don't want to do it again. [123.26] Stephen: Probably should have done a bunch more of that before Christmas. [127.26] Stephen: A lot easier. [128.26] Stephen: I think I only went out once to meet some buddies in town for a beer and some chicken wings. [133.26] Stephen: And they must have got me then. I work from home normally. [137.26] Stephen: So I got it. [140.26] Koel: Yeah, I've had it like three or four times now. It sucks. [143.26] Koel: Oh, my gosh. Yeah, that's what happens when you work in a nightclub, I guess. [149.26] Koel: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. [151.26] Koel: But I'm you know, knock on wood. [154.26] Koel: All good right now. So, yeah. [156.26] Koel: It's it's I guess it's it's weird. That's a weird time of year, right? [159.26] Koel: It's not really flying season in lots of parts of the world, especially UK, Canada. [164.26] Koel: And yeah, it's it's been just pissing down here for the last couple of days. [170.26] Koel: And I'm just like, OK, well, all my parts haven't showed up yet. [174.26] Koel: So I guess that's a good thing. Yeah. [177.26] Koel: It's build weather for sure. Definitely build weather. [180.26] Stephen: Yeah, there's a few bits and pieces. [182.26] Stephen: I grabbed one of those speedy be wing controllers a while back and that arrived. [187.26] Stephen: Thanks. Under 30 pounds. [190.26] Stephen: 30 pounds shipped for an F405. [194.26] Stephen: Like it's a dual board with the PDB included. [197.26] Stephen: And so far, it looks good. [200.26] Stephen: It's got like Bluetooth support and everything. [202.26] Stephen: And I've never had working Bluetooth support. [204.26] Stephen: I've had a couple of off brand things with Bluetooth that never quite worked. [208.26] Stephen: But I'd be interested to try this out. [210.26] Stephen: And as you noticed in the northern hemisphere, it's definitely not flying whether it's a bit rough. [215.26] Stephen: But down under, they're celebrating Christmases on the beach or out on the grill without grilling in mittens. [223.26] Stephen: You know, the peak of their summer. [225.26] Stephen: So a lot of people down there have been flying. [228.26] Stephen: And Betaflight has just pushed out the release candidate for four point five after a lot of testing into GPS and other features. [238.26] Stephen: So that's just dropped a couple of days ago. [241.26] Stephen: So things have been a little bit noisier than usual in Betaflight land, at least. [246.26] Koel: OK, so so what is the new and improved version? [250.26] Stephen: What does it have exactly in there? Do you know that the big ones are stuff like support for that F435 chip, [258.26] Stephen: the artillery tech chip, which was incredibly good value. [263.26] Stephen: Apparently, if you are looking at wholesale prices, it costs less than an F411, which is just pretty amazing, [273.26] Stephen: because a lot of people have been stuck with F411 on these low end boards for a long, long time, [279.26] Stephen: because there's not really enough room for manufacturers to get anything fancier in the price bracket that you're looking at for your basic tiny whoop, the low, low end stuff. [291.26] Stephen: And it's also really small, whereas the larger F7 chips were in larger packages. [298.26] Stephen: This is kind of like an advanced, highly efficient overclocked F405. [305.26] Stephen: So instead of 168 megahertz, it's 288 megahertz. [309.26] Stephen: So that's like a 50 to 60 percent overclock they managed. [315.26] Stephen: And they did it by obviously having newer process nodes that they're building the chip on. [320.26] Stephen: Because when STMicroelectronics kicked out the F405, what, like 10 years ago or something, [327.26] Stephen: they would have been using pretty contemporary chip technologies for that time 10 years ago. [332.26] Stephen: But artillery tech are building with much smaller transistors, smaller gates and everything. [338.26] Stephen: And that means that they can run this thing a lot faster, have less power usage, [343.26] Stephen: and that lets them run it faster. [345.26] Stephen: And I think it's available in a bunch of different packages down to, I think it might go down to kind of similar package sizes to the F411. [357.26] Stephen: So it could be, it wouldn't be a drop in replacement because it's got different pin configuration, [362.26] Stephen: but you could fit it on the same sort of board layout, an F411. [366.26] Stephen: So good for everyone, basically. [368.26] Stephen: And hopefully we can get rid of that F411 with only two UArts, [372.26] Stephen: which has just been a thorn in so many people's sides for so long. [377.26] Stephen: Oh, there's some cool stuff with GPS as well. [381.26] Stephen: So Return to Home has been slowly being optimized for many releases now. [388.26] Stephen: But this is a substantial overhaul with the UBlocks code getting lots of attention [396.26] Stephen: and people slowly moving out the older NMEA units. [400.26] Stephen: So UBlocks is the kind of go-to chipset for GPS receivers. [405.26] Stephen: It gives you the best quality that people have been doubling down on using that, [409.26] Stephen: been looking at how to optimize the board rate, make it more reliable, [413.26] Stephen: ensure that the flight controller isn't spending more time working with GPS data than it has to, [420.26] Stephen: and kind of counter-intuitively, running a slower board rate is better, [425.26] Stephen: because when the flight controller doesn't want to have to jump away from PID control [431.26] Stephen: to go and sort out the GPS data, it wants to kind of do it at its leisure. [438.26] Stephen: And if you have very fast board rate, then it fills up the buffer quite quickly [442.26] Stephen: and causes the flight controller to have to jump out and empty the buffer. [447.26] Stephen: So a slower board rate, so long as you don't actually have that much data, [450.26] Stephen: transfer is better because you end up just filling the buffer more fully and slowly over time. [455.26] Stephen: And then the flight controller can get round to it once in a while, [458.26] Stephen: rather than just like slamming the buffer full of data and the flight controller having to drop out and go and do that. [466.26] Stephen: So some task timing and scheduling stuff around that as well, obviously, [470.26] Stephen: with tweaks to the board rate and magnetometer support. [473.26] Stephen: So it's not up there with some of the other, like, autopilot and iNav, [479.26] Stephen: in terms of, like, fully calibrating the MAG, but it probably supports MAGs now. [484.26] Stephen: So that's useful to kind of add an additional data point. [488.26] Stephen: And you can take the GPS data in BlackBox Explorer and map it as well. [492.26] Stephen: So previously, it was quite hard to look at where you've been. [496.26] Stephen: You had to get, like, third-party apps. [498.26] Stephen: Now you can export GPX data from BlackBox Explorer. [502.26] Stephen: And so you can create a map of your flight directly from the BlackBox Explorer. [508.26] Stephen: Something I've been monkeying with and Curry as well has been the color font support. [514.26] Stephen: We would have typically just black and white with the analog OSD, right? [519.26] Stephen: But in the way that the font information was actually conveyed to be rendered, [525.26] Stephen: there was the possibility to set a couple of flags. [528.26] Stephen: And those were used to switch pages. [530.26] Stephen: In iNav, they always had two pages. [532.26] Stephen: Betaflight just stuck on one. [535.26] Stephen: And what's happened, instead of using the extra pages for extended data, [540.26] Stephen: Betaflight's chosen to use the extended pages to indicate different colored fonts. [546.26] Stephen: So you just double up the first page, but make it green and then orange and then red. [552.26] Stephen: So now if you set an alert level for some data points, [556.26] Stephen: say ESC current or your milliamp hours used, [561.26] Stephen: when it hits that warning threshold, the numerals will turn first to orange and then to red. [567.26] Stephen: And messages will come up in orange or red. [571.26] Stephen: So if you've got some really bad message like RX link loss instead of it being a white, [576.26] Stephen: it'll flash up in red. [579.26] Stephen: That's some cool stuff. [581.26] Stephen: Yeah, bits and pieces. [582.26] Stephen: There's some animations for LEDs. [585.26] Stephen: There's a rainbow effect that's now added to the kind of blink effects [590.26] Stephen: and the kind of cyclone scanner effect they had before as well. [598.26] Stephen: And they've made that bit more efficient on CPU. [602.26] Stephen: Something I think that we talked about a bit before, but not much, [606.26] Stephen: was that when you do angle mode now, [609.26] Stephen: any time you do yaw, it's yaw relative to the angle of the craft. [615.26] Stephen: I think rather than, or it's an earth act. [619.26] Stephen: They've changed the way that yaw orientates because it used to be that yaw, [624.26] Stephen: when you did a yaw move, it would like pull it out of alignment on the other axes. [629.26] Stephen: And then they snap back in. [631.26] Stephen: Yeah, yeah. [632.26] Stephen: So now it like does the yaw move in line with the other axes. [636.26] Stephen: So when you do a yaw, it doesn't like first do a yaw and then snap back your pitch [641.26] Stephen: to where it was before. [642.26] Stephen: It actually keeps it kind of used. [644.26] Koel: Yeah, keeps it. [645.26] Koel: Oh, okay. [646.26] Stephen: Yeah. [647.26] Stephen: So there's a whole bunch of bits and bobs. [649.26] Stephen: Obviously, as time goes on, it's becoming more a case of tweaking, [652.26] Stephen: but yeah, there's, oh, easy landing as well. [656.26] Stephen: So this actually produces air mode bouncing. [662.26] Stephen: So when you go into land, it's going to not let the PID controller go nuts. [667.26] Stephen: Everyone's done this, right? [668.26] Stephen: You come in and you're like, you've had a beautiful smooth pack in your CineQuad [671.26] Stephen: and you like just touch down on some concrete and it goes, flips upside down. [676.26] Stephen: And you're like, my camera lens. [680.26] Stephen: So there's a special thing that like dials down the PID controller. [683.26] Stephen: So now when you go low throttle, air mode doesn't try and like punch you sideways [689.26] Stephen: and flip the quad over. [691.26] Koel: That's weird. [692.26] Koel: I've actually never had that happen to me before with like the, I mean, [695.26] Koel: I guess I don't know if I run throttle up or idle up, I guess you could say. [699.26] Koel: So I don't know if air mode is the same as that, but I never, I've seen it in [702.26] Koel: videos where people could come to land and they're kind of like, you know, [704.26] Koel: bobbling on the ground a bit, but I've never had that happen to me before. [707.26] Stephen: If it's really highly tuned and you've got air mode enabled, [711.26] Stephen: then you've kind of, it would think that the ground touching it was like prop [716.26] Stephen: wash or something and it would try and fight against it and it would have [719.26] Stephen: enough authority to just completely flip the quad out. [722.26] Stephen: So yeah, this stops that happening. [725.26] Koel: That's cool. [727.26] Koel: So I know you're talking about like the, the you blocks and the GPS [730.26] Koel: optimization stuff, right? [733.26] Koel: So, cause I was actually recently cause I'm doing my homework on GPS right now, [737.26] Koel: just getting everything working for my long range set up with kiss. [741.26] Koel: And I actually came across Oscar Lang's website. [744.26] Koel: Actually at the start of this year, [745.26] Koel: he was talking about optimizing like GPS settings in you center or I guess [751.26] Koel: there's probably different programs you can use, but yeah, [755.26] Koel: it looks like there's a lot of stuff you can go in and change in that, [758.26] Koel: in that software and whatnot. [760.26] Koel: But then I was asking in the kiss discord, [762.26] Koel: I was talking to Alexander and basically he said like, [765.26] Koel: you don't even really need to mess around with that. [767.26] Koel: Like it'll like, at least this is maybe from the kiss side of things. [770.26] Koel: Like although you don't need to, but if you want to make it fast, [774.26] Stephen: to lock on, or if you're in some territories, [777.26] Stephen: a lot of the times GPS units can come configured to use, [781.26] Stephen: say North American satellites, [783.26] Stephen: but they won't listen to the European ones. [785.26] Stephen: And so you used to have to go in and like use you center to, [790.26] Stephen: to set those and enable it these days, [794.26] Stephen: be to fly it and probably kiss as well. [796.26] Stephen: They run a GPS initialization routine that takes those common settings. [800.26] Stephen: Like let's enable the ability to listen to all satellites. [803.26] Stephen: Let's set the update rate to 10 Hertz. [806.26] Stephen: You know, let's make it as sensitive as it can be [809.26] Stephen: and try and get as many satellites as quickly as possible [812.26] Stephen: and just turn on all these optimal settings. [814.26] Stephen: And so part of the work that beta flights been doing in previous releases [818.26] Stephen: and a little bit in this has been to take those commands [821.26] Stephen: instead of running them in you center. [823.26] Stephen: It just takes those commands and runs them when you boot the flight controller [826.26] Stephen: and fires them all at the GPS unit [828.26] Stephen: to make sure it's properly configured each and every time. [831.26] Koel: Yeah, that's cool. [832.26] Koel: Because like one of the things, [834.26] Koel: like you're talking about the baud rate and stuff, right? [836.26] Koel: And like going through that article [838.26] Koel: that Oscar Lang was talking about at the start of this year, [841.26] Koel: because there's auto bodding, [843.26] Koel: but then you can also set a custom baud rate, I guess, right? [846.26] Koel: And yeah, so if you, [849.26] Koel: some people are saying you want higher or something, [851.26] Koel: but then you were kind of saying you want lower, right? [854.26] Stephen: So it's within reason, like you don't want typically, [858.26] Stephen: unless you've got an H seven, in which case, [860.26] Stephen: maybe you don't want to go higher than fifty seven six hundred baud. [864.26] Stephen: Fifty seven six hundred is the default. [866.26] Stephen: And I was trying to do some experiments, [868.26] Stephen: then the weather became terrible. [870.26] Stephen: Because I think I've got a bunch of H sevens [872.26] Stephen: and I think I should run it higher [874.26] Stephen: just to screen through that GPS task as quickly as possible, [878.26] Stephen: because I think the H sevens got spare cycles. [881.26] Koel: It's got enough gas in the tank kind of thing, right? [885.26] Stephen: Yeah, because there's like an interplay between [888.26] Stephen: you either run a slower baud rate, [891.26] Stephen: in which case you have to maybe spend a little bit more overall time [896.26] Stephen: going back and grabbing data, [898.26] Stephen: or you run a fast baud rate and you have less time on the UART, [902.26] Stephen: but I think it's all hardware offloaded on the UART anyway. [906.26] Stephen: Yeah, you've got to have enough of a baud rate [909.26] Stephen: that the incoming satellite data can all fit on the wire, right? [913.26] Stephen: So it's got to be fast enough that you've got the bandwidth [915.26] Stephen: to get all the satellite data through, [917.26] Stephen: but people are saying you can have like 20 to 30 SATs at 57, 600 [922.26] Stephen: and you're going to be okay. [924.26] Stephen: If you're only doing really basic stuff, [927.26] Stephen: you can turn the speed down, [929.26] Stephen: but you need to reduce the update rate. [931.26] Stephen: So you've got to tell the GPS unit to not do 10 Hertz updates, [935.26] Stephen: but maybe go down to 5 Hertz or even 1 Hertz updates. [938.26] Stephen: And that will allow you to use a slower baud rate, [941.26] Stephen: which means there's less room on the line for data, [945.26] Stephen: but so long as you also have less data to send, that's okay. [949.26] Stephen: And that will cut the flight controller some slack. [952.26] Stephen: So if you do still have an F411 [954.26] Stephen: and you absolutely want to use GPS to give you a speedo, [957.26] Stephen: or maybe just print out the coordinates on your radio. [960.26] Stephen: So if it ditches, you can walk over and find it. [965.26] Stephen: You can do that, but you should lower the baud rate [970.26] Stephen: and be careful with it as well. [972.26] Stephen: Something else, just scrolling through some of the links here. [974.26] Stephen: I remember reading this PR, there's something cool with GPS [977.26] Stephen: where you can do a GPS lap timer. [980.26] Stephen: So there's this thing where you can, if you're flying a circuit, [984.26] Stephen: say you set up a bunch of gates in a field [987.26] Stephen: and you're trying to fly a circuit, [989.26] Stephen: you can have a switch that tells the quad, [994.26] Stephen: this is the position of the start finish gate. [996.26] Stephen: And as you fly through the gate, you can hit it. [999.26] Stephen: And then every time you go through that gate, [1002.26] Stephen: it's going to do like a lap timer reset, [1005.26] Stephen: and it'll print out the lap times. [1009.26] Stephen: So you can just go and fly laps and keep an eye on [1012.26] Stephen: what each lap is and sit on the Earth. [1015.26] Frank: That's pretty snazzy. [1016.26] Frank: Yeah, that's a pretty cool idea. [1018.26] Stephen: Yeah, and for crossfire as well, there's a CLI binding. [1022.26] Stephen: So if you put your crossfire receiver way inside the model [1025.26] Stephen: and you can't reach the little button, [1027.26] Stephen: if you ever need to rebind it, [1029.26] Stephen: there's now someone managed to reverse engineer [1031.26] Stephen: the CRSF commands and find out this undocumented command. [1036.26] Stephen: And they did it, hopefully did a PR and lo and behold, [1039.26] Stephen: it triggers the crossfire receiver to go into binding mode. [1043.26] Stephen: So you no longer need to get like your selection of chopsticks [1047.26] Stephen: and try and like bring them into your model. [1051.26] Koel: Yeah, it's always a pain in the ass having to rebind stuff. [1054.26] Koel: It's not that hard, but it's like, [1056.26] Koel: you get out the tweezers, like reach in, [1059.26] Koel: make sure you, I don't know. [1061.26] Koel: It's really not that hard, but yeah, [1063.26] Koel: I guess if you can do it through the software now, [1065.26] Koel: it's kind of cool. [1066.26] Koel: Although I can't because I feel like it's ultra. [1070.26] Stephen: I'm sure Alexander can read this code and be like, [1073.26] Stephen: oh yeah, I just send that packet, put it in as well, you know. [1076.26] Koel: Yeah, but I'm guessing with the keeping it simple way is like, [1079.26] Koel: press the damn button. [1082.26] Stephen: If you're flying a freestyle quad, [1084.26] Stephen: you can probably reach it, can't you? [1086.26] Stephen: Yeah, really complex stuff with plastic panels all over them. [1089.26] Stephen: For sure. [1090.26] Stephen: Yeah, yeah. [1091.26] Stephen: Yeah. [1092.26] Stephen: Anyway, there's a whole bunch of stuff going on there. [1094.26] Stephen: So yeah, a little bit of something for everyone. [1097.26] Stephen: I think it's going to shape up to be a decent release. [1100.26] Stephen: And I'm really just looking forward to getting rid of the F-411 stuff. [1104.26] Stephen: It needs to go away. [1105.26] Stephen: And especially in winter whoop season, [1108.26] Stephen: I think we have beta FPV with an F-435 board and an F-405 board. [1115.26] Stephen: But if you can grab one of those, they're pretty good. [1117.26] Stephen: And I think we're going to start seeing them replace the F-411 at the low end [1122.26] Stephen: in the next couple of years. [1123.26] Stephen: And yeah, it can't happen soon enough. [1126.26] Koel: No doubt. [1128.26] Koel: Yeah, I guess on the, [1130.26] Koel: if we're talking about sort of like updates and whatnot for flight controllers [1133.26] Koel: or whatever, back at the start of November, [1136.26] Koel: there's like the latest version of Kiss Ultra. [1140.26] Koel: It's a B54. [1142.26] Koel: They added a few new little features too. [1144.26] Koel: Like I guess they've changed like the return to home [1148.26] Koel: like throttle logic or something like that. [1151.26] Koel: I don't know a whole lot about that. [1153.26] Koel: But yeah, it looks like they added some, what is it? [1159.26] Koel: Added configurable MSP disarm delays. [1163.26] Koel: Added configurable PID boost for fast throttle movements. [1167.26] Koel: Configurable RPM assistance and change the PID controller. [1171.26] Koel: Yeah, I guess, you know, a bunch of little things [1174.26] Koel: that probably actually make a big difference for some. [1177.26] Koel: But I actually have to update my stuff. [1179.26] Koel: I'm really bad at updating. [1183.26] Stephen: It takes a lot of time now. [1185.26] Stephen: How's the long range build going? [1187.26] Stephen: Has it started coalescing? [1191.26] Koel: No, so I'm still waiting on motors and ESC [1195.26] Koel: that were ordered on November the 26th, which is really great. [1200.26] Koel: Really, really cool, really great stuff. [1203.26] Koel: We're both from China. [1205.26] Koel: Yeah, although it says flight departed and whatever, [1209.26] Koel: I'm not going to get into my frustrations. [1211.26] Koel: But yeah, I mean, I have everything else that I need, I think. [1216.26] Koel: I mean, I'm literally waiting for this ESC so I can put an XT60 on it [1219.26] Koel: and start the, you know, start from the base up. [1222.26] Koel: I mean, without the ESC, without the motors, I mean, [1225.26] Koel: I'm kind of like sitting here with my hands in my lap [1227.26] Koel: just twiddling my thumbs. [1230.26] Koel: But I mean, I updated my crossfire diversity. [1235.26] Koel: I got GPS working on just a flight controller [1239.26] Koel: just hooked up to 5 volt through USB. [1242.26] Koel: So I did a bit of experimenting because of my first time using GPS. [1246.26] Koel: And I was able to get seven SATs locked on my balcony. [1249.26] Koel: Pretty cool. [1250.26] Koel: I was happy about that. [1253.26] Koel: So yeah, flight controller's ready. [1256.26] Koel: Crossfire diversity is ready. [1258.26] Koel: GPS is ready. [1259.26] Koel: Just need that. [1260.26] Stephen: You have all the mounts and things. [1262.26] Stephen: It's a 3D printing to get the GPS attached. [1265.26] Koel: Yep. [1266.26] Koel: I got all my 3D prints done. [1267.26] Koel: Literally, I'm just waiting on this damn ESC and motors. [1272.26] Koel: Yeah. [1273.26] Koel: So oh, it looks like EBR is saying, [1276.26] Koel: so B54 also has an upgrade on flight performance. [1279.26] Koel: And he's saying, you must update. [1282.26] Koel: Don't worry, EBR. [1284.26] Koel: I will. [1285.26] Koel: Definitely update, especially for all. [1287.26] Koel: Well, I mean, any of my quads that have a KISS Ultra V2 in it, [1290.26] Koel: I'm going to put on the latest because I keep seeing people in the [1293.26] Koel: Discord being like, it's so much better. [1295.26] Koel: And they notice a difference in flight performance and stuff. [1297.26] Koel: So yeah, the only thing is, is like, it's been raining. [1300.26] Koel: And so I haven't even really been in quad mode, I guess. [1303.26] Koel: Although, I guess that's the perfect time to be doing upgrades or updates. [1306.26] Koel: So yeah, I will definitely get around to it. [1310.26] Koel: Yeah. [1311.26] Stephen: And we have tailspin trolling us saying that he flies every day on [1315.26] Stephen: beta flight 357, which is like five years old. [1319.26] Stephen: Yeah. [1320.26] Stephen: Never do you, mate. [1321.26] Stephen: You do you. [1322.26] Stephen: But yeah, it doesn't fly as good as the new stuff. [1325.26] Stephen: If that's what you want, if you've got an F3, you can knock yourself out. [1330.26] Stephen: Yeah. [1331.26] Stephen: Having RPM filtering makes everything a little bit better. [1336.26] Frank: Did you have any success sorting out Tony's X-Class? [1341.26] Frank: One of the big quads on a newer version? [1345.26] Frank: Because there's a classic holdout for old flight control software. [1349.26] Frank: It's people who've got that. [1350.26] Stephen: That's Jack. [1351.26] Stephen: And I think he actually went out of his way to buy some ancient flight [1355.26] Stephen: controller that still supported the old version because these days, [1361.26] Stephen: even if you buy, say, an F405 or an older 722, they may not actually [1368.26] Stephen: have been made when beta flight 357 was available. [1373.26] Stephen: So a lot of them don't have targets. [1375.26] Stephen: And I remember him hunting around trying to find one specifically [1378.26] Stephen: so they could fly that. [1380.26] Stephen: I don't know. [1381.26] Stephen: I've limited patience, to be honest. [1383.26] Stephen: I think people just should read the manual and update. [1387.26] Frank: But I mean, with the X-Class stuff, with the really big stuff, [1391.26] Frank: even the races there, like Clive in the chat is mentioning it. [1395.26] Frank: 357 is the classic one that they kind of say, this one works for X-Class, [1401.26] Frank: more recent ones. [1402.26] Frank: It's a tuning problem, right? [1403.26] Frank: No one's been brave enough to tune it, right? [1405.26] Stephen: It's a tuning problem, right. [1407.26] Stephen: Just read the manual and tune it like everyone else does [1410.26] Stephen: instead of keep some magic numbers from 357. [1413.26] Stephen: I have zero patience, I think. [1415.26] Stephen: It's highly achievable. [1417.26] Frank: Even 8-inch, I know someone who's recently, very recently built an 8-inch, [1425.26] Frank: put the latest beast bite on it. [1427.26] Frank: And he's not shy about tuning things. [1432.26] Frank: He's fairly on the ball, but he's managed to sort of have a little mini [1437.26] Frank: tornado of death after hovering for a little bit. [1440.26] Stephen: Numskull built a beast class, and he was using the latest on that, [1444.26] Stephen: so far as I know, and it worked fine. [1447.26] Stephen: I mean, if you have a tornado of death, you're just doing something wrong, right? [1453.26] Stephen: You have a tornado of death because you've overtuned it. [1457.26] Stephen: If you started out with a very, very gentle tune [1461.26] Stephen: and take black box and look at what it's doing [1464.26] Stephen: and then tune it appropriately carefully, [1466.26] Stephen: you're not going to have this type of problem. [1469.26] Stephen: If people just slap on defaults that are meant for like a spicy 5-inch [1474.26] Stephen: and put it on like a 10-inch quad, yeah, it's not going to fly well. [1479.26] Stephen: If you've got a lot more power or if you've got different frame resonance issues [1485.26] Stephen: than you have on a 5-inch, it's going to fly very differently [1488.26] Stephen: and it could be dangerous. [1490.26] Stephen: But just because you got lucky because 357 had a really loose tune by default [1497.26] Stephen: and you just learn to tune it, just learn to tune it, right? [1501.26] Stephen: It doesn't need to be super scientist level of doing black box to the nth degree, [1507.26] Stephen: but just back off the authority a little bit for a test hover, [1513.26] Stephen: make sure it hovers okay and then look at the filtering, [1517.26] Stephen: look at how much vibration you're getting, sort that out, [1521.26] Stephen: sort out any mechanical issues and then tighten it up until it snaps. [1527.26] Stephen: Until it's snappy. [1529.26] Koel: Yes, I'm basically spoiled in the KISS Ultra world [1536.26] Koel: because Crunked has put together some of these really amazing [1539.26] Koel: sort of like starting points as well as like, okay, start here, [1542.26] Koel: maybe bump it up to the next one, see how it goes [1544.26] Koel: and if your build's really clean, then you can try the next one. [1548.26] Koel: And with 5-inch quads with KISS Ultra, I feel like, I mean, [1552.26] Koel: I run Apexes and I mean, they just, they fly so good, [1556.26] Koel: I mean, from what I can tell. [1558.26] Koel: I've never really had to go in and do anything, [1561.26] Koel: although with the 7-inch that I'm building, [1564.26] Koel: the recommendations that I've got are, you know, [1567.26] Koel: try it out on default and then go from there, [1569.26] Koel: but then there's a few people that have been in the KISS Ultra Discord [1574.26] Koel: and then just like some other random sort of Ultra guys. [1579.26] Koel: Basically what they're saying is like, you know, [1581.26] Koel: P-values are going to be considerably lower on a 7-inch tune, [1586.26] Koel: but I don't know. [1588.26] Koel: Again, like I don't know a ton about tuning myself [1591.26] Koel: just because I've been, like I said, I've been spoiled, [1593.26] Koel: but I don't know, it's going to be a learning experience. [1596.26] Koel: This whole 7-inch quad for me is going to be a learning thing, [1598.26] Koel: which I'm actually excited about. [1600.26] Koel: And yeah, oh, sorry guys, I'm actually getting an important call. [1605.26] Koel: Give me one sec. [1606.26] Koel: I'll be right back. [1608.26] Koel: No worries. [1609.26] Koel: Ooh. [1610.26] Frank: Mysterious. [1611.26] Frank: Not a mystery. [1613.26] Stephen: Yeah, so I love these times. [1615.26] Stephen: I think that the defaults should fly fine. [1618.26] Stephen: One of the problems that these firmwares do run into [1623.26] Stephen: is if you're aiming to perform really well, [1626.26] Stephen: say for a crowd who are very fussy about their performance like racers, [1633.26] Stephen: who really want very aggressive, fast-moving, fast-responding quads, [1639.26] Stephen: they don't want any hint of hesitation when they're sticking, [1643.26] Stephen: but they want that thing just to spin around on a dime, [1647.26] Stephen: that you can't necessarily have loose defaults. [1652.26] Stephen: And if you've got loose defaults, [1654.26] Stephen: it's going to be really easy to build like a lazy freestyle bird, you know, [1659.26] Stephen: so long as you can deal with the prop wash, [1662.26] Stephen: a loose tune will be just fine. [1666.26] Stephen: It'll make everything look a little bit smoother. [1669.26] Stephen: But for a racer, that's terrible. [1671.26] Stephen: And I think what happened going from 3.57 onwards [1674.26] Stephen: is that they started trying to tighten up the defaults [1677.26] Stephen: so that it was good for racing. [1679.26] Stephen: And you can look at the, you know, the Champions League stuff [1683.26] Stephen: that just came out like everyone's flying beta flight. [1686.26] Stephen: And they're all on the 4.x release. [1688.26] Stephen: No, there's not a single person showing up on the 3.x release series. [1694.26] Stephen: And I don't think there's anyone below 4.3 either. [1697.26] Stephen: They're either 4.3, 4.4 or something, that ilk. [1702.26] Stephen: So it can work, but it's just, yeah, I'm not saying it's super easy. [1708.26] Stephen: And if I had an X-Craft that was already flying, [1711.26] Stephen: I'd be worried about it for sure. [1713.26] Stephen: But one of the things that I do with problem birds [1717.26] Stephen: is that I have to fly them on a lower cell count. [1720.26] Stephen: So if I've got something that I know is a little bit spicy [1724.26] Stephen: on, say, 5 and 6S, I might just put a 4S pack in it [1729.26] Stephen: and try and tune it on 4S instead. [1732.26] Stephen: And when I know I can get a good tune on 4S, [1735.26] Stephen: I'll take what I've learned, [1737.26] Stephen: but dial down the overall, like, pit multiplier [1742.26] Stephen: and a couple of notches and try that on 6S. [1746.26] Stephen: And then if I'm starting to get acceptable results on 6S, [1751.26] Stephen: then I can take that 4S point and relax it back [1756.26] Stephen: and then try and see how much I can move that back [1760.26] Stephen: to where it was on 4S before things start to act out. [1763.26] Stephen: And they will act out because a tune that's good on 4S [1767.26] Stephen: doesn't have the motor RPM going as high [1772.26] Stephen: as it would when it's on 6S, right? [1774.26] Stephen: So it doesn't have that quick response [1777.26] Stephen: that the motors can provide on 6S. [1779.26] Stephen: So the tune is having to work a lot harder [1782.26] Stephen: and everything's going to be cranked up a little bit higher. [1786.26] Stephen: So with B2Flight, the latest release is you've got sliders, right? [1791.26] Stephen: So you can literally just use the master slider [1794.26] Stephen: and say, I'm going to turn everything down a couple of notches. [1797.26] Stephen: And if you drag that master slider down from, say, 1.0 to 0.7, [1803.26] Stephen: then you're turning your P term, I term, D term all the way down. [1810.26] Stephen: And that can help a lot, right? [1812.26] Stephen: If you get something working on a 4S [1815.26] Stephen: that you thought was untunable on 6S, [1818.26] Stephen: then you can use that 4S as a starting point [1821.26] Stephen: and see, well, where was that problem [1823.26] Stephen: where 6S was suddenly like demon quad? [1828.26] Stephen: But 4S flies. [1829.26] Stephen: How do I slowly get up to where I was, [1833.26] Frank: where it should be at 6S from that 4S starting point? [1860.73] Frank: I brought up next class, even if it is slightly contentious, [1869.73] Frank: because we've got Cerberus coming on next week [1874.73] Frank: talking about his stint as the chairman [1879.73] Frank: of the British Drone Racing Association. [1881.73] Frank: And he's come in fairly recently. [1885.73] Frank: He's changing up things a little bit. [1887.73] Frank: And he's started a Discord server for the BDRA, [1892.73] Frank: where I noticed today, because I joined him and had a look, [1895.73] Frank: he's got channels for Whoops, he's got channels for X-Class, [1899.73] Frank: got channels for Wings, which is quite a big departure [1903.73] Frank: from what the BDRA has generally been, [1906.73] Frank: which has usually been laser-focused on the 250-size racers. [1910.73] Frank: So I'm very interested to see [1914.73] Frank: what he's going to talk about next week, [1917.73] Frank: what else he has perhaps in store for BDRA [1921.73] Frank: and events that he might be thinking about. [1924.73] Frank: So I'm very interested in that. [1926.73] Frank: That's what's got me excited for 2024, [1929.73] Frank: talking to Serb and finding out his plans with the BDRA. [1934.73] Frank: That's on next week. [1936.73] Koel: Oh, it looks like Alexander has popped up saying, [1939.73] Koel: you have full crossfire tool on Ultra in it through the OSD. [1943.73] Koel: You just didn't find the button, Cole. [1945.73] Koel: You didn't find the button. [1946.73] Koel: I know. [1947.73] Koel: You know what? [1948.73] Koel: I'm lacking and toying and prodding around [1951.73] Koel: and all the OSD stuff. [1952.73] Koel: There's honestly probably a lot of stuff [1954.73] Koel: that if I just spent maybe half an hour [1957.73] Koel: going through each subsection through the OSD, [1959.73] Koel: I could probably figure out a lot more, [1961.73] Koel: and then I wouldn't have to ask these stupid questions. [1963.73] Koel: That's cool. [1966.73] Koel: So I guess, Steven, it looks like there's already been done, [1971.73] Koel: already been figured, already been sorted out. [1975.73] Koel: That's very cool. [1976.73] Koel: Yeah. [1977.73] Koel: So I guess he's ahead of Betaflight then on that, [1980.73] Koel: if that just came out on Betaflight. [1984.73] Stephen: It's in here, VTX control. [1987.73] Koel: Kiss is on the ball. [1989.73] Koel: Kiss Ultra. [1990.73] Stephen: So this is like CRSF dev navigation. [1993.73] Stephen: Yeah. [1994.73] Stephen: Yeah. [1995.73] Stephen: It was mainly the bind button that I was looking at. [1997.73] Stephen: It's interesting because he's looking at it from, [2000.73] Stephen: I thought this stuff was only navigable from the OpenTX side, [2004.73] Stephen: but he's got all the stuff you'd see on an OpenTX firmware. [2009.73] Stephen: That's curious. [2010.73] Stephen: It's kind of odd. [2014.48] Stephen: So it looks like you can configure your transmitter [2017.48] Stephen: from the receiver. [2019.48] Stephen: I don't know why you'd want to do that, but yeah. [2023.48] Stephen: It's got like the transmitter menus there, [2026.48] Stephen: because normally you have that Lua script on OpenTX, [2030.48] Stephen: but it looks like you're getting the Lua script from the receiver side [2035.48] Stephen: instead of from the transmitter side, which is interesting. [2038.48] Frank: Well, that's where you're looking most of the time, I guess, right? [2040.48] Stephen: Yeah. [2041.48] Stephen: Yeah. [2042.48] Stephen: I've never seen that before. [2043.48] Stephen: That's interesting. [2045.48] Stephen: If your radio has no Lua and you need to change something. [2049.48] Stephen: Huh. [2050.48] Stephen: Yeah. [2051.48] Stephen: I've looked at this from kind of deviation TX. [2054.48] Stephen: So I'm kind of familiar with how crossfire surfaces that, [2057.48] Stephen: but I've never seen anyone driving it from the receiver side. [2060.48] Stephen: Very interesting. [2061.48] Frank: It does make sense as well with the increasing number of radios [2064.48] Frank: that are like kind of the gamepad style that don't have any screens on them. [2067.48] Frank: Yeah. [2068.48] Frank: That makes a lot of sense. [2069.48] Stephen: Funky. [2073.33] Stephen: Okay. [2074.33] Stephen: That's interesting. [2076.33] Stephen: Someone should yoink some of that code out of the Express LRS Lua [2083.33] Stephen: and try and port that into B2Flight then. [2085.33] Stephen: It could be interesting. [2086.33] Stephen: Although I think these days people, I say, [2089.33] Stephen: people don't use the OSD menus that much. [2092.33] Stephen: It's kind of, it's there, but when I'm on the ground, I'm like, [2097.33] Stephen: I'm overheating. [2098.33] Stephen: I'm overheating. [2099.33] Stephen: Gotta take off. [2100.33] Stephen: Gotta take off. [2101.33] UNKNOWN: Gotta take off. [2102.33] Stephen: Yeah. [2103.33] Koel: That doesn't sound fun. [2105.33] Koel: That sounds stressful. [2107.33] Stephen: Yeah. [2108.33] Stephen: When you've got those HD VTXs, you're looking at it and there's like a little [2113.33] Stephen: temperature readout at the bottom and you know if it gets to like 90 degrees, [2117.33] Stephen: it's just going to like shut down to save itself. [2120.33] Stephen: And so you're like, okay, 83, change, change, change, 84, change, change, [2125.33] Stephen: 85 faster. [2126.33] Koel: Even in pit mode, like even in lowest output, it'll still overheat. [2132.33] Koel: That's crazy. [2133.33] Koel: Yeah. [2134.33] Koel: Yeah. [2135.33] Koel: See, that's why I like to fly analogs. [2136.33] Koel: I don't have to worry too much. [2137.33] Stephen: Well, I mean, it will still overheat, but you just like, I think that the [2142.33] Stephen: throttling is better on analog because when you get to a certain temperature [2145.33] Stephen: with analog, it just like ditches the output power right down, right. [2149.33] Stephen: And I have had some analog stuff cut out on me because it gets too hot. [2153.33] Stephen: Typically, whoop boards will do that. [2156.33] Koel: Yeah. [2157.33] Koel: I think I saw, was it one of Curry's videos or something or somebody's [2160.33] Koel: video where they were, you know, they're toying around with the output power [2165.33] Koel: levels and all of a sudden, like, you know, once it got to a certain heat [2169.33] Koel: level, yeah, then it just kind of gone. [2172.33] Koel: Yeah. [2173.33] Frank: Yeah. [2174.33] Koel: It still showed that it was on and working, but nothing was actually [2177.33] Koel: displaying or anything. [2179.33] Frank: Yeah. [2180.33] Frank: Yeah. [2181.33] Frank: It is definitely an issue with analog, but not as much as it seems to be [2185.33] Frank: currently with HD. [2187.33] Frank: In my day job at the moment, I've been playing around with a Peltier [2192.33] Frank: elements. [2193.33] Frank: Oh, yeah. [2194.33] Frank: I've come across these before. [2195.33] Stephen: How's the cool things down by making more heat? [2198.33] Frank: Yeah. [2199.33] Frank: It's like a little solid state thing that you put some current in and it [2203.33] Frank: pushes the heat from one side to the other, which is quite fun. [2207.33] Frank: While it's pushing the heat, what does it do? [2210.33] Frank: Oh, it makes more heat. [2211.33] Frank: Yeah. [2212.33] Frank: It's like it pushes like three or four times as much heat as you're [2219.33] Frank: making, which is pretty good. [2221.33] Frank: But it means you end up with a really, really hot surface on the other [2224.33] Frank: side. [2225.33] Frank: So, you know, it's good fun. [2231.33] Frank: I mean, we're also arguing with the guys that are selling them who are [2236.33] Frank: saying that because when you make one side of it really hot, one side of [2241.33] Frank: it really cold, it also generates electricity. [2246.33] Frank: You can short it and it will move lots of heat from one side to the other [2253.33] Frank: because it will power itself, which we're very unhappy about. [2259.33] Frank: It seems like a free energy, cold fusion type thing going on here. [2264.33] Frank: Perpetual motion. [2266.33] Frank: Yeah. [2267.33] Frank: But it's still going from a hot place to a cold place. [2270.33] Frank: So it's kind of okay, but it feels very wrong to be like you can short it [2274.33] Frank: and it will work. [2275.33] Frank: That's weird. [2276.33] Stephen: Yeah. [2277.33] Stephen: Tuesday, first law of thermodynamics. [2284.33] Koel: Oh, we got the whole altar gang in here today. [2287.33] Koel: We got EBR. [2288.33] Koel: We got Alexander. [2289.33] Koel: I believe that's crunked if I'm not mistaken. [2291.33] Koel: I think the last name I think pretty sure. [2294.33] Koel: Yeah. [2295.33] Koel: Must be right. [2298.99] Stephen: Very cool. [2300.99] Koel: Yeah. [2303.85] Koel: I wish I could have some hafties and weather so I could actually get out [2306.85] Koel: and fly more before. [2309.85] Koel: Before the when the fully winter comes in, we haven't really gotten any [2312.85] Koel: snow yet. [2314.85] Koel: We've got little bits of snow here, but you know, I anytime it's like [2319.85] Koel: minus two, minus three or below, I'm like, I don't think I'm going outside. [2323.85] Koel: I don't think I'm going to do that. [2326.85] Frank: So yeah. [2328.85] Frank: Yeah. [2329.85] Frank: While it's been blowing a gale here and it's been very much more build [2334.85] Frank: weapon than flying weather, I've been working towards having [2339.85] Frank: somewhere to build by hanging up all my planes. [2344.85] Frank: I've been following a painless 360 video like years ago about using coat [2351.85] Frank: hangers to hang up your planes. [2353.85] Frank: So I dug out a load of slightly manky coat hangers and hung them all [2359.85] Frank: planes up. [2360.85] Frank: So they're now not on the floor. [2362.85] Frank: You've got covering every available service. [2364.85] Frank: Yeah, exactly. [2365.85] Frank: Just everything is covered with just planes. [2368.85] Stephen: Well, I just got a wardrobe and you can just open the wardrobe and be like, [2371.85] Stephen: Oh, which plane for today? [2374.85] Frank: Exactly. [2375.85] Frank: Exactly. [2376.85] Frank: He's like, yeah, just one of the clothes rails. [2378.85] Frank: They have like backstage at the theater. [2382.85] Stephen: All the fantastical garments. [2384.85] Frank: Yeah, exactly. [2385.85] Frank: Which glorious raiment for today? [2387.85] Stephen: A sea plane? [2388.85] Stephen: No, no, no. [2390.85] Stephen: Sea plane on the day like today. [2392.85] Stephen: No, no, no. [2395.85] Frank: I haven't quite got around to hanging out my quads or my tricopter or [2401.85] Frank: such things. [2402.85] Frank: But that's that's on the list. [2404.85] Stephen: I want to get a couple of bits of pegboard and mount those up there. [2411.85] Stephen: And it has kind of saved me from madness because I thought to start with, [2417.85] Stephen: I'll put everything in the box that came in. [2419.85] Stephen: But that just ended up with now the corner of the room is a mountain of [2424.85] Stephen: boxes. [2426.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2427.85] Stephen: And I don't know where anything is anymore. [2429.85] Stephen: Like, wow, look, each of these boxes is very neat and tidy. [2432.85] Stephen: But then if you put plenty of them together, it's a nightmare. [2435.85] Frank: And then you need like the one that's at the bottom. [2437.85] Frank: So all the rest obviously get removed into a slightly less tidy pile. [2442.85] Frank: And that happens a couple of times. [2443.85] Frank: All of a sudden you just surround. [2446.85] Frank: Yeah. [2447.85] Koel: Yeah. [2448.85] Koel: I've actually been on a donating role lately. [2450.85] Koel: I'm like going through all these, all these accumulated boxes. [2453.85] Koel: I'm like, do I need this crappy laptop stand that's been sitting around [2458.85] Koel: for two years that I haven't used? [2461.85] Koel: Goodwill. [2463.85] Koel: Yeah. [2464.85] Koel: It's I don't know. [2465.85] Koel: It's really weird. [2466.85] Koel: I don't know about you guys, but I have a really hard time getting rid of [2468.85] Koel: things that I've paid for. [2470.85] Koel: Even if I don't use them, I'm like, yeah, it's just one of those things [2475.85] Koel: where you're like, I spent money on this. [2477.85] Koel: Can't get rid of it. [2479.85] Frank: I mean, I have a hanging up to my right, a plane that I paid about five [2487.85] Frank: pounds for and like I should throw it away. [2490.85] Frank: Like it needs throwing away, but I can't throw it away. [2494.85] Frank: Yeah. [2495.85] Stephen: Did you get one of those planes that I have that little thing that's hanging [2499.85] Stephen: up behind you there? [2501.85] Stephen: I haven't got around to flying properly. [2503.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2504.85] Frank: That one's a flying fish. [2506.85] Frank: Yeah. [2507.85] Frank: The flying fish. [2508.85] Frank: Yeah, that's good. [2509.85] Frank: It's fun. [2510.85] Frank: I enjoy that. [2511.85] Frank: I need to get out and actually try and fly that thing. [2514.85] Frank: I haven't actually beat it. [2516.85] Frank: It definitely would benefit from FPV because it's small and fast. [2521.85] Frank: Yeah. [2522.85] Stephen: I heard it's got a decent power to weight ratio. [2524.85] Stephen: You can just like and launch it. [2526.85] Stephen: Oh, yeah. [2527.85] Frank: You just let go and it will disappear off into the distance quite quickly. [2534.85] Frank: Yeah. [2535.85] Frank: Flying one on a site. [2536.85] Frank: It's a slight challenge because it is very fast and it very quickly ends up [2540.85] Frank: being a small dot in the distance. [2542.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2543.85] Stephen: FPV for me. [2546.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2547.85] Stephen: I was a bit worried about that because I was thinking I was small first plane. [2551.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2552.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2553.85] Stephen: I'll get that. [2554.85] Stephen: But yeah, I kind of thought because I saw some guy test fly it and he just [2557.85] Stephen: like held it like vertically out in front of him, not even making it pretense. [2562.85] Stephen: He just held it vertically out in front of him, wang the throttle up and it [2566.85] Jack: just went. [2568.85] Frank: Yeah. [2569.85] Frank: Yeah. [2570.85] Frank: But it's definitely the sort of flying that it is good for. [2573.85] Frank: It's just a little mini rocket ship. [2576.85] Koel: Yeah. [2577.85] Koel: Yeah. [2578.85] Koel: But it's kind of like when you see those racer guys do the hand launches and [2580.85] Koel: they're just like, you know, in the blink of an eye, you can't see these damn [2583.85] Koel: things anymore. [2584.85] Koel: Right. [2586.85] Koel: Yeah. [2588.85] Koel: So it looks like Alexander on the chase. [2590.85] Koel: I'm looking forward to my footage from the trip for my trip coming up. [2593.85] Koel: Yeah. [2594.85] Koel: I'm I can't wait to fly out in Taiwan, man. [2596.85] Koel: I'm going to get some sweet long range footage out there. [2599.85] Koel: And hopefully have a quad come back to me to be able to show the footage. [2604.85] Koel: Yeah. [2605.85] Koel: Yeah. [2607.85] Koel: Should be fine though. [2608.85] Koel: Should be good. [2609.85] Koel: I'm looking forward to it. [2612.85] Koel: Making it to the mountain and back. [2614.85] Koel: Oh, yeah. [2615.85] Koel: Well, you know what? [2616.85] Koel: Because I had this in my mind that I was going to do a success two piece set [2620.85] Koel: up with lithium ions on my on my seven inch. [2623.85] Koel: But I was actually watching Curry's video recently where he was flying [2628.85] Koel: a six S one P and with a lithium ion, he was getting like 18 minute flight [2634.85] Koel: times. [2635.85] Koel: And I was like, well, I think, okay, when I flew in, um, in Taiwan last year [2641.85] Koel: with a five inch, I mean, I was getting almost halfway to the top of this [2645.85] Koel: mountain peak within maybe like two or three minutes. [2648.85] Koel: So I might not even need to do a success two piece set up because it's going to [2652.85] Koel: be double the weight and probably going to be weird for the tune. [2655.85] Stephen: So, you know, how about you just take an adapter plug so that you can plug two [2660.85] Stephen: packs in parallel if you want to. [2662.85] Koel: I really wanted to exactly. [2663.85] Koel: Yeah. [2664.85] Koel: Yeah. [2665.85] Koel: I mean, what I'm going to do, I'm going to do a bit of experimenting. [2667.85] Koel: I'm going to do success one P with the lithium ion cell cells and see how that [2672.85] Koel: goes. [2673.85] Koel: Maybe get that, that sort of joiner plug. [2675.85] Koel: See how that goes. [2676.85] Koel: If I really need, you know, 25 plus minute flight times. [2679.85] Koel: Um, and then I also was going to see if I can just grab a big lipo and just, [2684.85] Koel: you know, see what works. [2685.85] Koel: See, you know, see if a, the extra sort of juice with the lipo would be nice [2689.85] Koel: because I know, um, so Mike acts one of the kiss ultra, um, you know, pilots [2695.85] Koel: test guys, uh, he does a lot of, I think like section six inch stuff with, um, [2701.85] Koel: with lipos and he gets pretty decent flight times and range and stuff. [2705.85] Koel: So I mean, do I need to fly for 25 minutes? [2709.85] Koel: You know what I mean? [2710.85] Koel: Like, yeah. [2713.85] Koel: Oh, wow. [2715.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2716.85] Koel: So FPV Victor 21 kilometers, low flow six inch. [2720.85] Koel: That's, that's pretty awesome. [2722.85] Koel: Maybe lithium ion. [2724.85] Koel: Yeah. [2725.85] Koel: I don't know. [2726.85] Koel: Um, I mean, I don't know. [2728.85] Koel: Like, does it get boring after all? [2730.85] Koel: Cause I know we're playing like a Mavic. [2731.85] Koel: It gets pretty damn boring after the first like 10, 15 minutes. [2735.85] Koel: But I wonder how, uh, you know, FPV would go for that. [2738.85] Stephen: If you're dying to get that shot. [2740.85] Stephen: Perfect. [2741.85] Stephen: And to get that shot requires climbing for three or four minutes up a mountain [2746.85] Stephen: and then turning round, you might need a bit of capacity. [2750.85] Frank: Yep. [2752.85] Frank: True. [2753.85] Frank: I can imagine as well as like, if you're, if you're doing the test flight and making [2756.85] Frank: sure you know what your available flight time duration is and you're just doing [2760.85] Frank: laps to your local field, you're going to be, you know, there's no jeopardy here. [2765.85] Frank: It's all fairly dull. [2766.85] Frank: It's like, I know all of this. [2768.85] Frank: It's all fine. [2769.85] Frank: And then I can imagine like the moment you take off to go up a mountain, it's [2774.85] Frank: going to be a slight, like, especially when you got like jungle underneath it. [2777.85] Frank: Yeah. [2778.85] Frank: And it's like the stakes are a bit higher. [2781.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2782.85] Frank: I can imagine it's going to be a bit more. [2784.85] Stephen: Really, really happy to land. [2785.85] Stephen: It's like 30% of the pack left over. [2787.85] Stephen: You'll be like, oh, that's good. [2789.85] Stephen: That's what I needed. [2790.85] Koel: Yeah. [2791.85] Koel: Yeah. [2792.85] Stephen: That's fine. [2794.85] Koel: There was, um, let me see if I can pull this up here. [2796.85] Koel: Cause I was, there was a couple of things that I would, I keep reviewing my [2800.85] Koel: footage and if I can from before, um, let me see if I can pull it up here. [2805.85] Koel: Um, and I've been trying to figure out like the most optimal starting point. [2809.85] Koel: Cause I'm like, this is me just kind of flying from, from where I'm staying. [2813.85] Koel: But, um, I am like right there. [2816.85] Koel: I basically, let me see. [2818.85] Stephen: You could cruise along that river. [2819.85] Stephen: That would be my first instinct. [2821.85] Stephen: Like you've got a river and it's got bridges, [2823.85] Stephen: which you could totally fly under like that bridge in the right side. [2827.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2828.85] Stephen: Yep. [2829.85] Stephen: So you could start off just like way up following the course of the river [2833.85] Stephen: round. [2834.85] Stephen: You could come in, you could go onto the bridge and then you could go up the [2837.85] Stephen: hill. [2838.85] Koel: Well, so, okay. [2839.85] Koel: So you see this, like this housing little complex thing right in front of me, [2841.85] Koel: right? [2842.85] Koel: Like I'm basically standing or you can see where I'm sitting for this flight, [2845.85] Koel: but I, I actually get really good line of sight to that top peak from here. [2851.85] Koel: So like I could go just straight at it. [2854.85] Koel: Um, and I don't think I should have a problem with that, but, um, this was [2859.85] Koel: actually my first flight at it, but this bridge right here would be really [2863.85] Koel: sweet. [2864.85] Koel: Or this little sort of like, I want to, I would love to fly under that, but I [2867.85] Koel: would have to be standing cause I fly analog, right? [2869.85] Koel: I'd have to be standing somewhere line of sight ish. [2872.85] Koel: Um, climb on the roof. [2874.85] Koel: Can I climb on the roof? [2876.85] Koel: Like the furthest I get up this way is like, okay, that's the end of it. [2880.85] Stephen: But I mean, like, hello, understanding FPV family members, please fetch me a [2885.85] Stephen: ladder. [2886.85] Stephen: I will be standing on your roof the next 20 minutes. [2888.85] Stephen: Yeah. [2889.85] Stephen: And maybe swearing. [2890.85] Koel: I mean the tops of those, like that's totally doable within a few minutes [2894.85] Koel: easily, man. [2895.85] Koel: Like, like I should usually get to the top of that. [2897.85] Koel: Um, but as far as going the other way, I think it would be pretty cool to, to [2902.85] Koel: maybe push it into those far ones, but I need a better spot to stand because all [2907.85] Koel: the trees kind of in the way, unless I just fly really high up. [2909.85] Stephen: So you probably want to do a flight where you look around and you look for [2914.85] Stephen: some like peak nearby that you can sit on. [2918.85] Stephen: That's had the trees removed. [2921.85] Stephen: There's going to be some point somewhere where you can stand where there are no [2925.85] Stephen: trees. [2926.85] Stephen: That's not going to like take a three day hike to get there. [2928.85] Koel: Well, so do you see this other little, um, this little group of like houses and [2933.85] Koel: whatnot right there, right? [2934.85] Koel: So I was looking on Google maps and it looks like, let me see if I can get it [2938.85] Koel: this little road near the bottom here. [2940.85] Koel: If I, if I kind of go and stand, I don't know if you guys can see my cursor or [2944.85] Koel: not, but if I go and stand somewhere along this road, you go and hide in the [2949.85] Stephen: bushes near these people's houses with your goggles. [2952.85] Stephen: Well, I mean, like, look at that. [2954.85] Koel: Like if see that little road at the bottom middle, that gives me even really [2958.85] Koel: good line of sight to the top of that one, um, in the far left, but I don't know. [2963.85] Koel: It's going to be an experiment, right? [2965.85] Koel: Like it's, um, yeah. [2968.85] Stephen: And that's why you have the return time switch, right? [2970.85] Stephen: So if you do screw up your video signals, you can just hit the oopsie button [2975.85] Stephen: and get it back. [2977.85] Koel: Well, and what Alex was saying too was, um, with, with kiss ultra and Alex, [2982.85] Koel: correct me if I'm wrong, but I guess you only really need to have six Sats [2985.85] Koel: locked to get a good return to home. [2987.85] Koel: And, and, uh, but I was talking to some beta flight guys and does beta flight [2994.85] Koel: show all Sats or does it show all Sats that you're locked to? [2998.85] Koel: It only shows locked. [2999.85] Koel: Okay. [3000.85] Koel: Yeah. [3001.85] Stephen: You can't use them if they're not locked. [3003.85] Stephen: And the more you have the more accurate that 3d position is going to be. [3007.85] Stephen: Yeah. [3009.85] Stephen: You six is okay. [3012.85] Stephen: But if you're doing long range, then having more than 10 for peace of mind. [3017.85] Stephen: Yeah. [3018.85] Stephen: Is a good idea because you don't want to. [3022.85] Stephen: You don't want to get to a situation where the number of Sats you've got is [3027.85] Stephen: all of a sudden insufficient to tell you your position and the quad doesn't [3032.85] Stephen: know where to go. [3033.85] Stephen: And I don't know what the ultra behavior is, but in beta flight and I have [3037.85] Stephen: another, if you're trying to do a GPS based task and you no longer have your [3041.85] Stephen: GPS based position, it's a fail safe. [3044.85] Stephen: Like you don't have, you don't have that information anymore. [3047.85] Stephen: So well, six is, is enough. [3051.85] Stephen: Obviously if you, if you do kind of, uh, if you think about it, it's triggered [3057.85] Stephen: 3d, so you'd need three to triangulate position normally, but for an extra [3063.85] Stephen: dimension, you technically only need four, but six is six is not more than [3069.85] Stephen: enough. [3070.85] Stephen: Alex six is like Brown trouser return to home. [3073.85] Stephen: I'm sorry. [3074.85] Koel: Well, so what I, what I, um, I mean, when I was doing my testing, just putting my [3082.85] Koel: putting a flight controller with GPS on my balcony, I was able to lock seven Sats [3087.85] Koel: like within, you know, no time. [3089.85] Koel: So I feel like if I'm in the middle of nowhere, well, maybe not the middle of [3092.85] Stephen: nowhere, but you should be in double digits easily and then you'll be fine. [3096.85] Stephen: Yeah. [3097.85] Stephen: Yeah. [3098.85] Stephen: You don't want to, you don't want to get to a point where you don't have [3102.85] Stephen: enough GPS status to tell you what your location is enough. [3109.85] Stephen: But if you're down at six and you end up on four, what happens if you go down [3113.85] Stephen: to four or three Alex? [3115.85] Stephen: Yeah. [3116.85] Stephen: Because this isn't, this isn't a constant static number. [3119.85] Stephen: If you're on six, you could end up on four or three. [3123.85] Stephen: And then what's the quad going to do if it sees only three Sats? [3127.85] Stephen: That's the thing you want enough that you can afford to lose a substantial [3131.85] Stephen: count of those because of someone's poor, unshielded electrical equipment [3136.85] Stephen: or occluded by something, you know, or just dumb luck. [3141.85] Koel: So my question then is though, so because, you know, I'm coming from a place of [3146.85] Koel: ignorance, um, basically say you're in a, you know, that sort of area that I was [3152.85] Koel: showing you guys out in Taiwan, right? [3154.85] Koel: Like what types of things would interfere with GPS satellites? [3158.85] Koel: Or, um, is it noise from the quad? [3160.85] Koel: Is it stuff from the environment? [3162.85] Koel: Is it like, like what, because I don't know this stuff, like what actually, [3167.85] Koel: you know, either improves or hinders GPS quality or lock or whatever. [3174.85] Stephen: You can get some noise from some VTXs. [3176.85] Stephen: Some of the HD VTXs are kind of, uh, renowned for this. [3181.85] Stephen: The walks now struggled a bit with lack of shielding. [3185.85] Stephen: Yeah. The Chinese army. [3187.85] Stephen: Um, and anyone that's doing like a radio towers of any sort. [3192.85] Stephen: So GPS is 800 and 1500 megahertz, I believe. [3197.85] Stephen: Right. Frank. [3198.85] Stephen: So anything that might be in those bands? [3202.85] Frank: Uh, it's clear at 1.5, 1.6 gigahertz, I think, uh, somewhere around there. [3208.85] Frank: Uh, I mean, I guess it depends what, what you're using as well. [3213.85] Frank: But, uh, so yeah, I mean, but you can, you can, you still get like, uh, [3221.85] Frank: but you have the intermodulation distortion and things like that where like [3225.85] Frank: different frequencies can interfere with each other and make new ones. [3228.85] Frank: Yeah. Yeah. [3229.85] Stephen: So that's why I walked out was falling foul, I believe. [3232.85] Stephen: Hmm. [3233.85] Frank: That would make sense. [3234.85] Frank: So that's, that's why, you know, the, the, [3238.85] Frank: the idea is to try and get your GPS antenna as far away from everything else [3242.85] Frank: as you can. Um, especially if you've got the magnetometer on there, [3246.85] Frank: that's going to get like stuff from your quad anyway. [3251.85] Stephen: I'm going to mind the GPS maps can be over the entire horizon to horizon sky. [3256.85] Stephen: So if you're flying along and you've got your high up and you've got massive [3261.85] Stephen: viewpoint, and then you dive down into like a trench or something, [3265.85] Stephen: then all of a sudden you're like limiting what's visible. [3268.85] Stephen: You're a visible window of the sky and that can, [3271.85] Stephen: but if you're walking through a city, you traditionally have terrible GPS [3274.85] Stephen: reception because of tall buildings. [3277.85] Stephen: You don't see anything but a tiny slit of the sky above you. [3281.85] Stephen: And that impacts GPS performance. [3283.85] Koel: Well, that makes sense because when I'm driving downtown Toronto, [3286.85] Koel: when I'm under a bunch of underpasses or overpasses, um, [3290.85] Koel: like it doesn't actually know where I am. [3292.85] Koel: It's like, you're here. And then like, I'll drive a bit and it'll be like, [3295.85] Koel: actually, no, you're here. And then it's like, uh, yeah. [3300.85] Koel: Yeah. I don't think the BN two 20 has Meg on it. [3304.85] Koel: No, I've got one of those. No. [3308.85] Koel: I guess. Yeah. Water in the sky. So clouds are not good, I guess too. [3313.85] Frank: But, but genuinely like military applications can spell over. [3318.85] Frank: We've seen that, uh, in Poland in the past sort of few days, uh, [3323.85] Frank: that, uh, GPS has been interfered with, with, you know, [3327.85] Frank: military exercises going on and things. [3329.85] Frank: So it may well be worth going to something like GPS, [3334.85] Frank: jam.org and having a look at the sort of live, live ish map. [3339.85] Frank: I think it's sort of outdated daily of like what, [3342.85] Frank: what GPS interference is going on, which you can see kind of like, [3346.85] Frank: Oh, maybe today is not the day for a GPS reliant mission. [3351.85] Koel: Yeah. Fair enough. Yeah. Yeah. [3355.85] Stephen: It should be fine. I mean, it's just like we said before, [3358.85] Stephen: you're doing something that's inherently risky. [3360.85] Stephen: So build your confidence and prove your equipment works, [3365.85] Stephen: learn the local area, [3367.85] Stephen: maybe do a couple of flights where you're just going up in the air and doing [3371.85] Stephen: like 50 meters around, [3373.85] Stephen: making sure there's no weird signal interference and, [3377.85] Stephen: and then just push it slowly. [3379.85] Koel: But you know, the other thing I thought about too is, um, [3382.85] Koel: cause I got about halfway up to the top with just my five inch freestyle [3386.85] Koel: quad, right? I'm like, Hmm, maybe I'll just get a bigger battery and, and, [3390.85] Koel: and, uh, you may get lucky in there. [3392.85] Stephen: Genuinely is absolutely sweet FA out there. [3395.85] Stephen: In which case, you know, more power to you, man. Good luck. Yeah. [3398.85] Koel: Yeah. Yeah. [3400.85] Koel: Oh, yeah. I think it's, uh, honestly, I, I, [3403.85] Koel: I'm fairly confident that I should be okay. I guess, I don't know. [3408.85] Koel: I mean, I guess it's all speaking from hypothetical place, [3411.85] Koel: but like if I can build my quad the way that I've built my other quads, [3415.85] Koel: then, and I've got a better VTX, I've got diversity, I've got, you know, GPS. [3421.85] Koel: I mean, I don't see why I should have any problems, right? [3423.85] Koel: Like it's a plus the testing is obviously an important phase, but yeah. [3430.85] Stephen: That diversity crossfire should be bulletproof. So if you're putting out [3434.85] Stephen: like 500 milliwatts or more on the TX, [3438.85] Stephen: that crossfire diversity should go so much further than your analog video [3443.85] Stephen: that punch out and, you know, [3446.85] Stephen: wait till you're 70 meters in the air and you probably got signal again for [3450.85] Stephen: your VTX. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, Falcon rad, [3453.85] Koel: I was watching his stuff and he's saying he's never set his, uh, [3456.85] Koel: crossfire a transmitter to more than like 250 milliwatts. [3459.85] Koel: And he's gone out like, you know, insane amounts of kilometers. So yeah. [3466.85] Stephen: I mean, I've only needed the high power transmitters where I've had, [3469.85] Stephen: I'm running on 2.4 gig and I've got those tiny little ceramic antennas [3474.85] Stephen: that are like on a 10 mil by 10 mil VTX all on one board. [3479.85] Stephen: That's the only time I really needed to increase power. [3482.85] Stephen: Otherwise I could stay on a max of 100 milliwatts and it'd be fine. [3487.85] Koel: Yeah. I think the, the scariest part for me is like, you know, [3490.85] Koel: stretching that elastic with the video when you're going out, you're like, [3493.85] Koel: how much can I go out? Okay. When I, when I start turning, you know, [3498.85] Koel: how's it going to be? Right? It's like, I want to keep going further, [3502.85] Koel: but I also want to be able to see once I turn around and then I'm like, okay, [3506.85] Koel: maybe I'm just going to have to pitch up and fly backwards to myself. [3510.85] Stephen: Yeah. And do you, I mean, the, if you look at the express LRS guys, [3515.85] Stephen: they did range tests and I think Wesley Varti had actually, uh, [3519.85] Stephen: attached some secondhand satellite dish to his VTX and he used it to do a [3524.85] Stephen: high gain antenna on the VTX and he only lost video signal on 5.8 gigahertz [3530.85] Stephen: when he was at the 90 something kilometer mark. Wow. Wow. [3536.85] Stephen: Yeah. I, I know the distance that I'm planning on going is like, [3542.85] Koel: it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like peanuts. [3545.85] Koel: It's like peanuts compared to what these real like long range guys should be [3548.85] Koel: fine, man. Like you, [3549.85] Koel: you've probably got a really nice location to fly there and I'm honestly pretty [3553.85] Stephen: jealous because it looks like there's basically no one out there apart from you [3557.85] Stephen: and a bunch of beautiful scenery. So that's it. I know. [3561.85] Koel: I know it's, I feel very, very fortunate and lucky because it's like, [3568.85] Koel: how could you not want to fly at a place like that? You know what I mean? [3571.85] Koel: Like it's, it's pretty incredible. Oh, [3575.85] Koel: I just noticed we have got to the top of the hour. [3577.85] Stephen: Thank you to everyone who has joined us this week. [3579.85] Stephen: We're going to bounce over to the other stream now. [3581.85] Stephen: So thank you to our wonderful Patreons. [3584.85] Stephen: We'll be joining you shortly. And thank you for joining us. [3588.85] Stephen: This week and Cole, see you and myself, [3593.85] Stephen: Stephen with a silly mustache. See you next time. [3597.85] Stephen: Thanks for tuning in.
