[148.7] Frank: So Martin and me we've you and I first met on the Battle of Britain Model Squadron Channel 4 TV show

[164.7] Martin Thompson: It was wasn't it because we had our five year anniversary in 2003
[170.7] Martin Thompson: Yeah
[172.7] Martin Thompson: Wow I remember you there just working away on the laptop trying to figure out why the infrared things on the shooting the plane
[180.7] Frank: Yeah I was trying to first of all stop everyone from blowing up their own team's pyrotechnics
[188.7] Frank: And trying to then re-allow them to blow up everyone else's pyrotechnics when they're up in the air
[194.7] Frank: Exciting times
[196.7] Martin Thompson: Because wasn't it when we were doing the formation takeoffs
[198.7] Martin Thompson: We'd just shoot the plane in front of us and then we'd just set up all the smoke bombs
[204.7] Frank: There was that and there was also people testing that their guns worked on the ground

[214.7] Frank: I'll test the guns while you're on the ground sat just behind all your teammates

[232.7] Frank: I mean it's the same crew that do

[246.7] Frank: And I think they succeeded with us and a collection of Bomi's and a load of pyrotechnics

[257.7] Jack: Because on numerous occasions you were like you would have stabbed someone

[264.7] Jack: There was never the right tools
[266.7] Jack: Someone had to stop and like go disassemble their workshop
[271.7] Jack: And then bring everything
[273.7] Jack: I would have just hurt people
[275.7] Jack: I'd have been like you test your guns on the floor

[281.7] Frank: There's ammo cans of LiPo batteries that were like absolute gold, dust
[288.7] Frank: There was not enough batteries to go around for everyone

[293.7] Frank: Production team would sort of disappear them off into some other part of the site
[297.7] Frank: And we'd have to go hunting for them
[299.7] Frank: It's a great game of hide and seek
[305.7] Jack: If someone like Cole, he would have been like

[313.7] Frank: But Martin you were famous in both the TV world and the RC world
[321.7] Frank: Well outside of model squadron I feel
[325.7] Frank: How long have you been flying RC?
[331.7] Martin Thompson: That is a good question
[333.7] Martin Thompson: I am now in my 20th year
[339.7] Frank: We haven't even gone through the list of things that you've done yet
[343.7] Frank: But it's too long a list to just be 20
[347.7] Martin Thompson: Yes I should really learn to say no more often
[352.7] Martin Thompson: And I've been flying my aeroplane for 20 years
[356.7] Martin Thompson: I'm 27 this year so
[360.7] Jack: Did you sell your garage in the end?
[364.7] Martin Thompson: Which one I think is the question
[374.7] Martin Thompson: I think you might be referring to the advert for the one to rent
[378.7] Martin Thompson: And the one to rent did get rented
[381.7] Martin Thompson: But I've left adverts up because it just kind of creates a continuous stream of messages
[386.7] Martin Thompson: So when one does become available I just send someone a message
[389.7] Martin Thompson: And it gets talent to the game
[391.7] Martin Thompson: And again and again and again
[393.7] Frank: It's like the gift that keeps on giving
[395.7] Frank: So you've been flying RC for 20 years
[399.7] Frank: Yes
[401.7] Frank: It seems like you must have got into your entrepreneurial
[408.7] Frank: Spirit fairly early on
[411.7] Frank: Because you've been in the model trade for quite a long while haven't you?
[416.7] Martin Thompson: 17 years
[418.7] Martin Thompson: Or coming up to 17 years
[423.7] Martin Thompson: Started that career when I was about 10
[427.7] Martin Thompson: When I was about 10
[429.7] Martin Thompson: And yes that's kind of just led on to
[433.7] Martin Thompson: Lots of weird and wonderful opportunities that I always am just too keen to say yes to
[439.7] Martin Thompson: You definitely built up a reputation
[443.7] Frank: The BMFA Facebook group for having
[447.7] Frank: Sort of a lot of models to sell
[449.7] Frank: Buying models, driving models around the country
[453.7] Frank: You built up an empire
[456.7] Martin Thompson: Yes, formerly driving models
[460.7] Martin Thompson: I think it was interesting
[464.7] Martin Thompson: I think the best way to describe that was when I stopped
[467.7] Martin Thompson: It must have been coming up to two years ago
[473.17] Martin Thompson: Or sort of when I kind of had a break from it a couple of years ago
[476.17] Martin Thompson: And it was only then was I realised
[479.17] Martin Thompson: You can literally contact any corner of the world through model aircraft flying
[484.17] Martin Thompson: It's absolutely incredible
[487.17] Martin Thompson: Kind of just that network
[491.17] Martin Thompson: And sort of kind of actually how
[494.17] Martin Thompson: Kind of in model flying or helicopters or drones
[497.17] Martin Thompson: Or whatever we want to call them and whatever you want to do
[501.17] Martin Thompson: It's all a hobby, it's a hobby for us
[504.17] Martin Thompson: And it's amazing kind of the professional lives of people that are brought together
[510.17] Martin Thompson: To a common hobby
[512.17] Martin Thompson: It's just absolutely incredible
[517.51] Frank: And anyone that has been following Martin's Instagram and other social media
[521.51] Frank: Will have seen how far he's been pushing that
[525.51] Frank: You've been blue cropping, I would say
[529.51] Frank: With your various contacts around the world
[532.51] Martin Thompson: Yes, it's quite amazing with model aircraft
[535.51] Martin Thompson: Flying sort of, yes, travelling around different corners of the world
[540.51] Martin Thompson: And it's always great fun when you're like
[542.51] Martin Thompson: I was at a model flying club in Australia
[546.51] Martin Thompson: Fairly recently
[548.51] Martin Thompson: And with that you just turn up and it's just
[550.51] Martin Thompson: It's so easy, it's the same conversation
[552.51] Martin Thompson: It's just like how long have you been flying models for?
[555.51] Martin Thompson: And that's it, that's the only question you have to ask
[558.51] Martin Thompson: And then you just, not you can sit back
[560.51] Martin Thompson: But it just opens the door to all these kind of wonderful conversations
[564.51] Martin Thompson: And before you know it you're kind of being shown
[566.51] Martin Thompson: Around the club hearts and kind of
[568.51] Martin Thompson: If you want to join the club
[570.51] Martin Thompson: And it's just honestly, it's such an amazing hobby

[577.51] Jack: I like the fact after you've been doing it a fair few years
[581.51] Jack: Someone asks you at a club and then they kind of relax
[584.51] Jack: Once they know you're not a dickhead
[587.51] Jack: Do you know what I mean?
[589.51] Jack: It's like when you first, you know like
[592.51] Jack: If you've been doing it for say 10 years
[594.51] Jack: They go, oh, you've chopped your finger
[597.51] Jack: You know not to do this, you aren't going to kill anyone
[600.51] Jack: I mean I remember
[604.51] Frank: Martin's not so sure about this
[606.51] Frank: Martin knows, knows, knows

[616.51] Jack: I learned, apparently you were a gobsh**t at Hooligan

[622.51] Jack: And that's how you've ended up being

[629.51] Jack: Or some sort of documentary thing
[631.51] Jack: That you left school early because you hated it
[634.51] Jack: And bottle flyings all you've known in life
[637.51] Martin Thompson: Oh no, that was for something else with that
[643.51] Martin Thompson: But yes, I was out of school for a period of time
[646.51] Martin Thompson: Between ages of 13 and 14
[649.51] Martin Thompson: So I sort of didn't really do year 7
[651.51] Martin Thompson: And a little bit of year 8
[655.51] Martin Thompson: So yes, that was the joys
[658.51] Martin Thompson: Oh, can you tell me, Colton
[661.51] Martin Thompson: You've been quietly sat in the corner at the top there

[698.51] Martin Thompson: It's all really kind of led on from model aeroplane flying

[710.51] Martin Thompson: I throw a lot of time and passion
[712.51] Martin Thompson: And sort of very much a tunnel visioned approach
[715.51] Martin Thompson: With model aeroplane flying
[717.51] Martin Thompson: When you finish school, it's business model aeroplane flying
[720.51] Martin Thompson: And you sort of get to your early 20s
[723.51] Martin Thompson: And it's like, actually, I don't know the world
[726.51] Martin Thompson: Outside of model aeroplane and business
[731.51] Martin Thompson: Which is rather kind of intriguing
[736.51] Martin Thompson: But I've kind of always been very lucky along the way
[739.51] Martin Thompson: It's kind of either opportunities
[741.51] Martin Thompson: To channel 4 Battle of Britain Model Squadron
[744.51] Martin Thompson: And that kind of gave me a boost of confidence
[747.51] Martin Thompson: To do the work I did in Bangladesh
[751.51] Martin Thompson: Because you sort of think
[753.51] Martin Thompson: I think it's like being
[755.51] Martin Thompson: Especially as an adult being on TV
[757.51] Martin Thompson: I know I was on kind of TV and newspapers
[760.51] Martin Thompson: When I was a lot younger
[762.51] Martin Thompson: But you don't really
[764.51] Martin Thompson: You sort of
[765.51] Martin Thompson: You don't really kind of think about that
[768.51] Martin Thompson: But you kind of think as an adult
[770.51] Martin Thompson: I wasn't expecting that

[774.51] Martin Thompson: Like, if I can do that, anything
