[124.8] Stephen: You'd like to fill me in. Yeah, so there's an awful background in chips in America where they're throwing
[132.72] Stephen: truckloads of money at people to build
[136.68] Stephen: semiconductors in the US because until
[139.92] Stephen: recently, this is an industry that
[142.2] Stephen: orbited around Taiwan and
[145.28] Stephen: with the awkward China Taiwan standoff
[149.56] Stephen: No one really wanted to see what would happen to something that was crucial to their entire economy if China swooped in so
[158.12] Stephen: There's been this move. Well, obviously the next next best place from China would be India. They've got lots of high tech and
[166.28] Stephen: similarly kind of
[168.52] Stephen: Easy come easy go approach to pollution and labor laws. So, you know move over there
[175.4] Stephen: and then the US realized that they were going to be
[178.68] Stephen: Pretty stuck if that happened as well because all of a sudden they'd be very much an also ran
[183.44] Stephen: So their solution is to just throw gogg loads of money at people
[187.68] Stephen: And try and get them to set up bases in the US
[192.12] Stephen: So we've got some people setting up in Arizona
[195.88] Stephen: TSMC
[197.16] Stephen: Intel are opening some new plants and they're not going to affect eventually is that we're going to end up seeing if the US
[203.36] Stephen: Continues to fund this and does so successfully
[205.68] Stephen: We could see the actual chips that are needed on flight controllers and digital video systems and all that stuff being made in America

[215.04] Stephen: Which would be an interesting twist
[217.6] Stephen: There's some pretty big stumbling blocks to this one that this is an industry that treats pollution like
[227.52] Stephen: Eating and breathing it uses some really atrociously damaging chemicals
[233.12] Stephen: To the extent where people have accidentally been gassed to death in something reminiscent of World War one
[238.84] Stephen: As for the chlorine gas leaks and chlorine and God knows what?
[243.12] Stephen: and also it requires vast amounts of
[247.08] Stephen: very clean water
[249.08] Stephen: to purify all this stuff and rinse off these reagents generally used in the in the production process, so
[257.24] Stephen: The obvious approach for this in America was to put it in Arizona a state well known for its plentiful
[266.88] Stephen: supply
[270.08] Stephen: Interesting we'll see how that works out. But anyway, nothing that money can't solve. We've been assured
[275.56] Stephen: Yeah, and then someone saying they were hoping to beat this problem with desalination
[280.8] Stephen: presumably from that well-known Arizona ocean that

[288.8] Stephen: Interesting if it does pan out though, you know, they'll start out with a high profit stuff
[293.04] Stephen: You know things going into video cards and mobile phones and desktop computers
[298.04] Stephen: But after a couple of years at the game
[300.36] Stephen: We'll be down to chops the chips that go into dishwashers and maybe flight controllers. So if it does
[307.76] Stephen: actually change things then within
[310.72] Stephen: 10 years it could be that FCs are being built in America, which would be an interesting turn of events
[319.12] Frank: If they managed to invent moisture farming that's the next thing right? Mm-hmm. Can't we just send them some of our water?
[331.04] Stephen: The big hurdle there is not just the cost of the labor but
[336.32] Stephen: Because they you know perfectly willing to put up money for this
[339.48] Stephen: But the simple fact that there's been a massive brain drain and the people that started Silicon Valley a generation or more ago
[347.12] Stephen: Simply don't really exist in America anymore. They've all gone overseas
[350.48] Stephen: So there's there's not a reliable labor pool
[353.92] Stephen: Certainly not the places where they want to build these plants and certainly the highly skilled labor
[358.52] Stephen: they want in the plants isn't going to move to the middle of nowhere in Ohio or Arizona and
[365.16] Stephen: Relocate there to work. So they're stuck with a bit of a conundrum
[369.04] Stephen: So it'd be interesting to see if they can automate their way around that or if they just have to pull in a bunch of Chinese
[376.2] Stephen: Nationals to actually run the plants. I think
[380.04] Tony: America wanna bring back industry and stuff back into their country. I think they're sick of
[385.76] Tony: You know sending it away all the time and getting it done abroad. So
[389.96] Tony: It's not just that it's a lot of things. They're gonna bring back I think
[394.48] Stephen: Yeah, yeah
[395.48] Stephen: but at the moment it really is it looks increasingly like it's gonna be India and China fighting for the first and second place and
[402.76] Stephen: Then it's just everyone else after them. So
[406.16] Stephen: Hands out and it looks like if people aren't going to go into India
[409.08] Stephen: Then they're more likely to have a go at Thailand or Vietnam
[412.56] Stephen: Then you know go around the other side of the planet
[415.6] Stephen: but um, yeah, like I said money can do a lot of things and if the
[421.24] Stephen: United States buying power can alter things that they could really change the state of affairs
[427.56] Stephen: It just remains to be seen whether it works out
[430.08] Tony: They've got any money left. I think they're 34
[434.2] Stephen: They just keep borrowing just to get the checkbook out, you know, it's all good
[438.7] Stephen: Keep keep up in that debt. Yeah, they just vote every year to increase the national debt and there's no problem whatsoever

[514.0] Stephen: Putting them on the green and silicon board that we're all used to seeing and you drop them on and you get the

[521.92] Stephen: Building what goes into those little black squares that you see on your flight controller
[526.48] Stephen: Which is a ceramic package with a little semiconductor inside with these hair thin wires that go from the actual chip itself out

[536.96] Frank: I mean there's a lot more assembly places than there are chip fabs
[540.64] Frank: But there's still a couple of chip fabs in South Wales with uh, iqe I believe

[559.84] Stephen: And the the thing is that these don't come in a one-size-fits-all right you've got the kind of cutting edge stuff that's
[566.08] Stephen: You know writing the works of shakespeare on a grain of rice and then you've got your art for a dishwasher

[577.28] Frank: Yeah, I don't know what end of it they are to be honest, I only know that it exists

[835.34] Frank: Uh, and I got them all back together nice and easily but it was the battery because what happened was

[845.74] Frank: And it was quite windy on saturday to the point where like all the other people at the flying field were like, yeah
[851.18] Frank: I'm not flying. It's too windy. And I had this tiny little foam thing and I was like, how hard can it be?

[861.58] Frank: It wasn't so much the speed of the wind as that it was really really bumpy
[865.74] Frank: It's really windy
[867.66] Frank: Sort of bumped it enough that it ejected the battery. So then there was just a little foam plane without a battery

[876.78] Frank: Was less controllable turns out

[885.98] Frank: But it it took me quite a while to find the battery again because obviously the battery fell down and the plane did not

[905.34] Frank: Uh, but yeah, this is it's not here. So then uh, I sort of walked a sector

[913.18] Frank: And just kept going and everyone everyone else at the field was like you've lost it give up

[933.98] Frank: And they'd wander off and then it'd be a little while and someone else coming. Oh, you're not found yet

[948.38] Frank: It was definitely over there and I was like well i'm i'm walking a grid pattern of where I think it went

[958.06] Frank: Look where you said it was but i'm gonna finish the grid pattern i've spent like an hour and i've got like

[968.38] Frank: And he's like no, no, no, no, come on. Come on. You you haven't found it. Come over here. Come over here

[975.9] Frank: And like no, i'm gonna finish this and it's carried on quite a while
[979.82] Frank: Uh, and he he went over and started looking where he was looking for it

[986.78] Frank: Almost as I finished like where I said I was gonna look there's a last little bit last place you look
[993.82] Frank: And there it was. I was very happy because it was in quite long grass
[997.58] Frank: So and it's an orange battery, but if it's in long grass, you basically have to be looking directly down on it
[1002.62] Frank: So it was just having to pay stuff and down just like an arm's width every time
[1008.7] Frank: How long were you looking for a battery for?
[1012.06] Tony: A long time for your vehicle. Yes an hour
[1015.74] Tony: An hour and a half. Oh, yeah, probably an hour. Yeah an hour. I mean how much are they?
[1021.66] Frank: Oh, it wasn't so much the money because I didn't I don't really like the battery. It's just
[1026.62] Frank: I don't want to be leaving junk a live boat in a field. Yeah, it seems

[1039.58] Frank: I'd flown in what was clearly not flyable conditions. And so it was already looked like a bit of a prat. So I didn't want to

[1051.18] Stephen: Well, yeah, this is what makes the hobby look a bit better, you know, you just uh

[1058.46] Stephen: Leave nothing take it all the bits back don't just leave

[1064.46] Stephen: I mean even if even if they got up in flames just you know
[1067.42] Stephen: Grab the bits after it's gone out pop it in the bag and chuck it in the bin when you get home

[1079.34] Tony: Found it there is oh it was goproge quite a lot of the time as well, wasn't it?

[1251.17] Frank: Just just all of a sudden their entire like display is just yes, there is thing there is the thing

[1395.92] Stephen: They had me doing that at work doing the sates all turned up this golf range
[1401.28] Stephen: And and I I figured out there there was just an open bar. So I amused myself. Otherwise eating fried chicken and drinking cocktails

[1412.88] Tony: Bucky girls come around and bring beer and stuff which was quite nice
[1416.8] Tony: This is the only good thing about having a beer halfway through oh and I saw a golden eagle which was pretty oh, that's nice

[1474.48] Frank: And I promised to tell you last week I finished building my field charging pack

[1481.84] Tony: You mentioned you mentioned you were doing something with it. You've done some
[1486.88] Jack: If you remember he gave us tips on not pressing so hard and
[1491.92] Stephen: Fully charging it up. Did you include a bms and fancy stuff with it?
[1496.88] Frank: I didn't include a bms, but now i'm arguing with a bms. That is the problem if you make a battery
[1502.8] Frank: Clever enough to look after itself. It decides it doesn't want to do what you want it to do
[1508.72] Frank: Uh, and so i'm arguing with it all the time. Oh, it is quite happy for me to charge it up, but it doesn't like

[1518.16] Frank: Voltage or current to anything else?

[1522.96] Stephen: Yeah, it just goes no. No, you don't look I think you should be like a phone pulling maybe you 500 milliamps
[1531.04] Frank: I'm not going to charge it like you charge it up and then it's got all the

[1538.48] Frank: And you can read across the battery terminals like the
[1542.08] Frank: the the actual output of the bms
[1545.44] Frank: The battery voltage that you expect and then you plug it into a charger and try to use its charge something else
[1552.24] Frank: And all of a sudden the output voltage goes to zero. All right, what's
[1557.2] Frank: What's going on? It just says no safety a lot
[1562.39] Frank: Maybe but I don't know
[1564.39] Frank: I don't know what I how i've upset it
[1567.19] Stephen: Does it have something?
