[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to… [14.4] Jack: Carlos Campos! [16.0] Frank: Art Faulkner. [17.84] Frank: Sam Dahmer. [19.68] Frank: On with the show. [20.68] Lee: Let's drone out now. [52.14] Jack: Hello and welcome. [55.46] Jack: You're listening to Let's Drone Out. [58.46] Jack: And tonight we are joined by everyone's favourite, Curry Kitten. [64.02] Jack: Hello. [65.42] Jack: And everyone's other favourite channel, Painless360. [69.66] Lee: Hi Jack, hello Curry. [72.9] Jack: Hello. [73.9] Jack: Hello. [74.9] Jack: One of the reasons we somehow survived the YouTube castration of if you haven't got [84.74] Jack: a thousand followers, we don't want you on our platform. [89.94] Jack: And I'm your host, Bright Till I Fly, let's start the show. [94.46] Jack: Lee, it's a pleasure to have you on. [97.22] Jack: We've… [98.22] Jack: Steven's away, so it's safe, so you two can not kill each other. [104.94] Jack: No, no, it's fine. [110.74] Jack: Thanks away, he's at the Royal International Air Tattoo, unfortunately. [117.3] Jack: I can phone Tony to invite him on. [121.22] Jack: Tony, if you're listening to this, feel free to come on. [127.34] Jack: So I had an earlier on conversation, Lee phoned me up and checked whether this was still happening. [134.14] Jack: And it's been good to hear from you. [136.9] Jack: I feel like the gift of LED light doing wonders for the communication between us now, I did [146.9] Jack: really appreciate that. [148.86] Lee: It has been a very long time since I've been on the show. [150.74] Lee: It's probably been over a year since I've been in LDO. [154.3] Lee: So there's been a lot happened in the last 12 months, but it's lovely to see you on [159.78] Lee: the show as well. [160.78] Lee: Nicely Curry back. [162.26] Lee: It's that kind of LDO classic vibe tonight. [165.3] Lee: So it's lovely to be able to hang out with you guys and have a chat and have a catch [168.62] Lee: up because we haven't spoken. [171.38] Lee: You and I have, but and Curry, I bring occasionally as well. [174.98] Lee: But it's like just to come on the show and talk about the hobby, it's kind of a fun [179.18] Lee: thing to do. [180.18] Jack: Been a long time, though, has been has been a while. [188.33] Jack: I have been enjoying your Patreon streams and everything. [193.13] Jack: It's been weird. [194.13] Jack: I've obviously been talking about you to Cole and I mentioned about the Flip32 multi-we [203.85] Jack: flight controller. [206.41] Jack: There's been a there's been a historical revival as painless, like probably groans groans [213.65] Jack: in disappointment. [215.17] Jack: But Curry's been flying a tricopter lately and so have I. [220.97] Jack: And yes, so we've kind of gone back to like the full 50. [227.49] Jack: Meanwhile, you've been playing around with, you know, walk style and gimbals. [236.89] Lee: See, look at that, that is proper old school. [240.81] Curry: Is that a wooden frame? [243.25] Curry: This is a wooden frame. [244.29] Curry: This is what my my friend gave me was clearing out his garage, which is about the same age [248.65] Curry: as my one, which is about 12 year olds. [251.13] Curry: So my my tactic was I keep the original DT 750s, the original props. [255.81] Curry: I had to reprint a few of these because they just destroyed themselves. [262.69] Curry: But I then put on a modern stack. [265.93] Curry: So it's like it's technically I'm doing review of this ESC board, but I didn't want to do [271.81] Curry: like that's boring. [272.81] Curry: I thought I'd put it in something that F7 flight controller and an FPV rush FPV BTX. [280.85] Curry: And the idea is similar to my F450 what I did is like, can I accrow it? [286.73] Curry: Bearing in mind, it sounds as jet says like a lawnmower when it's hovering, because this [290.93] Curry: thing is just chattering back and forth. [292.89] Curry: Look at the wobble on it. [295.33] Curry: The whole thing just shakes. [296.49] Curry: So the most important thing to take with the field to me tomorrow is a bin bag. [302.49] Curry: That's what you need to take an all tricopter flights. [305.45] Jack: It does sound like it's cutting grass, you know, that flat sort of blunt mower slapping [312.45] Jack: grass, instead of that nice sheen cut. [317.13] Jack: That's what it sounds like. [319.29] Curry: That's where you might have a slight advantage with those nice carbon fibre arms and proper [323.93] Curry: proper looking mounts. [325.69] Curry: My motors are held on by zip ties, remember the old David zip ties, you know, that's it's [331.53] Jack: traditional. [332.53] Jack: I'm here. [333.53] Jack: I bet painless you must be like, oh, my God, what is wrong with you two? [339.09] Lee: I don't have any issue with it at all. [341.41] Lee: I think if you're doing something with a hobby that puts a smile on your face, then you're [344.73] Lee: doing it right. [346.49] Lee: It's just I got rid sadly of all the old flight controllers because I end up with a kind of [351.57] Lee: a bin bag because you know, as somebody that does reviews regularly, I'm sure when you have [355.45] Lee: the same thing is you get sent stuff for review and you kind of get them in, you tinker with [359.93] Lee: them and they end up, you know, you might use them in anger, you might not, you might [364.01] Lee: give them away. [365.45] Lee: And then five years later, you find them in a pile and you go, oh, God, these aren't even [371.21] Lee: supported anymore. [373.09] Lee: So I had to clear out and I did a video where it was it was literally a bag full of APMs, [380.77] Lee: multi wheeze, CC3Ds, NASI 32, flip 32, all that stuff that we started out in the hobby [389.69] Lee: that I was never going to use again. [391.57] Lee: And it was kind of fun just to go through it because you know, you know, that thing [394.57] Lee: where you end up with these little tubs of of spares and the bottom third never really [400.85] Lee: gets sees the light of day, you know, you just kind of dig down until you find what [405.13] Lee: you want. [406.13] Lee: Then you stop. [407.13] Lee: Well, I actually cleared out the bottom third of all the bins. [410.65] Lee: And it was yeah, I don't have any of that of that old stuff. [415.29] Lee: But the tricopter thing, I mean, that was something that we all tried back in the day. [418.93] Lee: I mean, and David Wintersdale was the bloody reason that most of us did it, wasn't he? [423.53] Lee: He was the tricopter genius. [426.09] Curry: He put those plans up that made it like sound. [429.63] Curry: It was easy. [430.63] Curry: I built my tricopter having knowing nothing about RC or anything. [433.57] Curry: I just saw the videos like, oh, he put a video he put this big guide of what to do out. [439.89] Curry: I thought I'd try it. [440.89] Curry: Oh, this this was my non tuned one. [442.65] Curry: This is beta flight, default tune, which it's not very happy with. [450.89] Jack: I don't know whether you'll hear it. [453.53] Curry: We can't hear it. [454.53] Curry: Oh, yes. [455.53] Jack: Yeah. [456.53] Jack: Oh, that's a wobbling. [459.53] Jack: Oh, it doesn't get much better. [463.01] Jack: Like this is part two, by the way. [465.21] Curry: This is this is not bad compared to what it was like this I think this is smooth now. [472.61] Curry: It doesn't sound very smooth. [481.26] Curry: I think that's flyable. [485.82] Lee: That sounds like the sound effect of an aircraft in a World War Two movie after it's been shot [490.98] Lee: through the engine, isn't it? [491.98] Lee: When it's coming back to Dover, which is coming out cylinders. [498.22] Curry: Yeah, I'm going to ignore that. [500.82] Curry: Fly it away. [501.82] Curry: Then you can't hear it anymore. [503.3] Curry: That's the plan. [505.3] Lee: It was just happy if it took off back in the day, if it just left the ground, we were over [512.42] Lee: the moon. [513.42] Lee: If it didn't explode in flames or kill anybody, you know, songs, it was in more or less the [517.74] Curry: same number of pieces at the end, if I could come back from flying without it in a bin [522.82] Curry: bag, because it's crashed again, then I was very happy. [525.74] Curry: It's like the first time that happened, I was overjoyed. [527.82] Curry: I don't have to rebuild it. [529.3] Jack: Hey, I bought one, one to money. [534.26] Jack: I was like, I remember the first time I finished a battery, several bumps into the hobby. [543.5] UNKNOWN: Sorry. [544.5] Lee: It's a fantastic feeling. [547.06] Lee: I think it's one of those things that, yeah, you have to creep up on being able to get [552.58] Lee: to the end of the battery and land and not just go and do the walk of shame and try and [556.34] Lee: find it. [557.34] Lee: I was doing a review of a quad the other day and just got a bit carried away and it's only [561.62] Lee: a small quad and it disappeared because of course, all the fields are full of knee-high [566.94] Lee: grass now and it went in and I had to use, I was like, I have no idea whether, because [572.26] Lee: it just, and I had to use the RSSI trick to go and, you know, that thing where you're [577.9] Lee: looking at the amount of signal in your telemetry and you just, and you're walking at, you look [584.5] Lee: incredibly silly. [585.5] Lee: It looks like something out of a Doctor Who episode. [588.1] Lee: You're just kind of creeping up on it. [591.9] Lee: Luckily, I remembered this time that in Express LRS, because last time I was on, I don't think [596.34] Lee: Express LRS was the default choice as it kind of is now for lots of part of the hobby. [601.18] Lee: Express LRS, when it gives you the RSSI values, it's measuring the loss, not the value of [606.18] Lee: the signal. [607.68] Lee: So you want the smallest possible value for that, whereas the first time I ever had a [612.62] Lee: crash with Express LRS, I confidently took off in the direction that was giving me the [617.78] Lee: worst, what I thought was the best signal, but actually it was telling me this is, this, [623.34] Lee: this is a maximum amount of loss. [625.1] Lee: So I took off in completely 180 degrees the wrong direction. [628.82] Lee: And it was only after I'd been walking for about three or four minutes and I'm like, [633.1] Lee: something's really wrong here that I managed to, you know, cause I'm old as well. [637.06] Lee: It doesn't help. [638.06] Lee: I managed to just peer at the screen and realize there was a minus sign in front of the DBM. [642.06] Lee: And I was like, Oh, come on. [645.46] Lee: Why is nobody telling me that? [647.06] Lee: So it turned out by the time I got to the quad, the work snow unit was very hot. [652.86] Lee: So it survived, but it's one of those where you're like, like, please battery, don't die. [658.1] Lee: Please battery, don't die. [659.1] Lee: Cause if I go and don't find you now, it's going to get found by the combined harvester [663.22] Lee: when it goes over the top. [664.9] Curry: Oh, that would not be popular. [668.5] Lee: That would not be popular. [670.38] Lee: So it is one of those fun things. [672.06] Lee: But yeah, so it turns out if you, if you're watching this and you fly Express LRS, you [675.94] Lee: never use the RSSI trick test it. [678.74] Lee: Because when you need it to use it in anger, you'll forget about it. [682.9] Lee: And if you use an Express LRS, you want the smallest number cause you want, but it actually [688.34] Lee: got me right on it the other day. [689.7] Curry: It kind of depends what you mean by the smallest number. [691.88] Curry: Cause one would think minus 100 is smaller than minus 20, whereas minus 20 would be very, [696.54] Curry: very close at minus 100 would be far away. [700.66] Lee: This is the challenge when you have an audience, most of which have no idea what a DBM is. [706.26] Lee: And there's a small percentage who actually do know what a decibel is and what the ratio [710.9] Lee: is. [711.9] Lee: And it's a logarithmic scale. [713.34] Lee: So when you say the smaller number, you know, 80% of the audience goes, Oh, so minus 20. [719.54] Lee: Cause, cause of course, you know, if, if you're looking at it, it's like, well, it's easy [723.86] Lee: then, isn't it? [724.86] Lee: You go for the minus 100, but it's, it's, it's one of those things you just have to, [729.06] Lee: in the end, you just have to show it and demo it and go do this. [733.3] Lee: Because otherwise people are going, well, is, is that, and also you have the, you know, [737.02] Lee: the pedantic crowd, that's not actually the smallest number. [740.18] Lee: And you're like, yeah, but I'm trying to explain to somebody who has no idea what I'm talking [744.62] Lee: about and that actually might like me not see the minus sign for the first five minutes [750.78] Lee: of the recovery. [753.46] Lee: It's kind of one of those fun things. [755.02] Lee: What's this video? [756.58] Curry: I was slightly baffled with it the first time cause I was so used to using regular RSSI, [761.78] Curry: but it does make much more sense. [764.38] Curry: I don't think it makes more sense in my head, but as long as I know that, you know, if we're [769.78] Curry: getting into minus three figures, that's a bad thing. [772.82] Curry: And if we're minus 40 ish, then we're, we're close by that's, that's all I need to know. [778.5] Lee: That's really interesting that you said that Curry, because about minus 40, minus 45, you're [784.7] Lee: about six feet away from the quad I found on the other day. [789.46] Lee: And I thought it would have gone lower than that before you're on top of it. [793.22] Curry: I've seen it when I've powered on on a desk, I've seen it minus 20 something. [797.34] Curry: Right. [798.34] Curry: Yeah. [799.34] Curry: If I, if I turn on and I'm stood up, it's around minus 40. [802.78] Curry: That is practically on top of it then I mean, oh, that's a tricot. [807.3] Curry: Is this, is this you'd have a day then Jack? [809.54] Jack: Yeah. [810.54] Jack: Yeah. [811.54] Jack: See, I've definitely got a bit of tail wiggle there. [813.78] Jack: And a lot of jello, sorry, I thought I'd run this in the background. [821.66] Jack: And just, you know, show you that make you feel better that although your tricopter does [829.34] Jack: sound like a lawnmower, mine's probably not that much better. [835.22] Curry: As far as I know, you know, I had to clean spiders out of the motor. [839.66] Curry: So there's all sorts of stuff in there. [842.82] Curry: The noise it makes is, you know, a feature. [846.9] Jack: Yeah. [847.9] Jack: Not a bug. [850.06] Jack: We are so out of practice and not very good at a hobby anymore. [856.1] Jack: Both I and Chris G took off without attaching antennas to our goggles. [861.5] Jack: Like, range is pretty bad. [864.34] Jack: It's pretty bad, isn't it? [866.34] Jack: And Frank had to systematically go around and like screw antennas onto our faces. [872.02] Jack: So, yeah, we're we're hopeless, man. [875.06] Jack: Like, Jesus, make painless. [878.7] Jack: I'll tell you what, if you want to know an easy video, what, you know, like how to get [884.14] Jack: back like the WD-40 painless edition of like de-rust into the hobby. [890.94] Jack: Remember, signal is improved with antennas. [896.82] Jack: Check your battery level before plugging in. [900.94] Lee: I have made those videos in the past, but nobody watches them. [904.22] Lee: And then you you're trying to help somebody and then you kind of refer them to those videos. [909.22] Lee: They go, oh, that's really useful because because actually those those videos are very [913.38] Lee: boring and, you know, when because at the moment there's so much stuff on, you know, [919.46] Lee: content creation is now a job. [921.82] Lee: You know, when we started doing this and playing around on YouTube, it was just something [925.18] Lee: you did for a DOS to help other people out. [927.74] Lee: Now it's a career choice. [929.54] Lee: But those kind of videos don't get the same kind of traction as, you know, those those [936.38] Lee: thumbnails that we all love. [937.7] Lee: You know, the game changer or you won't believe this happened dot, dot, dot, you know, all [943.1] Lee: that all that stuff that we that we we have to sit through now, you know, having is like [948.02] Lee: here's the top 10 things to make sure you don't crash. [950.74] Lee: Everyone's going to go, you know, I'm going to I'm going to watch the next controversial [955.22] Lee: video from such and such. [956.74] Lee: And that's that's where you people get to it. [960.54] Lee: So so, yeah, it's an interesting idea and have done it in the past. [964.94] Lee: But I find that it doesn't take very long if you haven't been flying regularly for you [969.7] Lee: to go to the field and that automatic little systematic way that you set yourself up has [974.86] Lee: kind of you get there and you're like, oh, this used to be like, you know, you don't in [979.06] Lee: the case, you take the quad out, you put and then you flip that oven, turn the radio on [984.66] Lee: and then you put that because, for example, one of the things that I noticed the other [988.02] Lee: day was that I always I'll have to if I've got someone with me, I'll do FPV and they'll [994.38] Lee: do the hack cam, the infamous hack cam with the GoPro on the on the thing. [998.94] Lee: If I'm just on my own, I'll just fly a line of sight, but I'll record the FPV. [1003.54] Lee: I'll have the goggles around my neck. [1005.66] Lee: But what what I do, so what you have to do is you have to take the goggles out the bag [1010.42] Lee: first and put them around your neck, plug in the battery and power them on. [1014.14] Lee: If it's the version, one of the work cells, because they have a power button, then you [1018.18] Lee: put your cap on and then you have to check in your phone thing that the caps on straight [1024.14] Lee: because everyone gets very upset if you record it and it's on at a slight angle. [1028.54] Lee: But the last three or four times I've been flying, I've put my cap on, sorted it all out [1034.86] Lee: and then lifted the goggles up and gone, oh, I'm going to have to do that all again. [1041.94] Lee: So there is there is like a little and when you've been flying at the end of the season, [1045.62] Lee: it's really, you know, it's dead automatic. [1047.26] Lee: You just you do it or boom, boom, boom. [1049.18] Lee: And everything's all set. [1050.58] Lee: We had a flying day at the start of the season where my friend brought is one of his little [1055.02] Lee: planes that's bound to one of the little radio master radio is not one of the big one. [1061.46] Lee: What's the really small one called? [1062.86] Lee: Not the OK. [1065.14] Lee: No, not the pocket one. [1066.34] Lee: That's like a game controller. [1068.02] Lee: All right. That's it. [1069.98] Lee: Thank you. The Zorro and he got the Zorro out and found that the batteries weren't charged [1074.98] Lee: in Zorro. And it was like a rookie mistake. [1078.98] Lee: But but once by the end of the season, you remember that you have to charge your GoPro [1084.66] Lee: batteries for your quads, the batteries for your radio. [1088.82] Lee: You know, you have all this prep that you do in the first three or four flights are always [1092.66] Lee: a little bit clunky and you get to the field and you think, oh, I haven't got the strap or, [1097.9] Lee: you know, I mean, these days I put an XT 60 covers on a lot of the batteries when they get [1104.5] Lee: stuck away and they're actually really handy for the part of part of the little routine [1110.62] Lee: to get everything ready. [1112.14] Lee: But I have these little I even made a card that was like his because somebody wanted to [1117.5] Lee: block a pre-flight check. [1119.1] Lee: You know, if you go to the field, what are the things that you need to check? [1121.98] Lee: Because if you with a quad, it's one thing. [1124.42] Lee: But if you're flying, you know, a fixed wing, there's lots of other things that you've got to [1128.46] Lee: check. So, you know, are your control surfaces still OK? [1132.1] Lee: Have they been ripped off? Are your servos knackered? [1134.34] Lee: Has the linkages come loose? [1135.82] Lee: Are they still moving in the right direction? [1137.74] Lee: Does it look like trimmed? OK, you sent a gravity. [1140.26] Lee: All right. You know, I wrote this big list out and it helped that person. [1144.9] Lee: But in terms of people being interested to watch that video, maybe I need to make more [1151.14] Lee: exciting thumbnails, you know, do this or you'll crash one of those kind of thumbnails rather than [1157.98] Lee: just, you know, top 10 things to do when you get to the field. [1161.18] Lee: I think that's maybe maybe a trick I'm missing, really. [1163.58] Lee: But I'm still not trying to fall into the entertainment versus education. [1171.3] Lee: You know, I'd rather there's so much stuff going on in the hobby all the time. [1175.06] Lee: And I just I am struggling to keep up with the stuff that's going on as it is, [1180.9] Lee: even with my output, you know, that's what four videos a month, [1184.5] Lee: four videos a week typically is what I've done. [1186.54] Lee: I've actually throttled it back the last four or five weeks [1190.18] Lee: as I'm kind of planning to what summer looks like. [1194.54] Lee: But even with that, I've still got a massive list of things [1198.02] Lee: that I that people have asked me to talk about or common issues. [1200.78] Lee: I'm getting common questions, new technology, stuff that needs flight reviews. [1205.74] Lee: You know, it's it's always going on and it hasn't slowed down. [1209.62] Lee: How are you finding it, Wayne? [1211.58] Curry: Well, I think you're doing a cracking job getting that much out [1214.1] Curry: because I think I'm barely doing one a week at the moment. [1216.78] Curry: But I tried to take this approach recently of doing less pure reviews. [1222.74] Curry: And if someone wants to send me something, even if it has to be interesting [1226.66] Curry: or I have to make it interesting, hence like can I send you the CSC board? [1230.42] Curry: Yes, but I might be a while because I want to build on something stupid. [1233.02] Curry: Is that OK? Yeah, fine. [1234.58] Curry: And we'll do that. So it's it's yeah, there's a backlog [1238.5] Curry: and there's some there's other bits and bobs I know are coming. [1241.26] Curry: It seems to be a particular busy time at the moment, [1244.22] Curry: which is at least that's coincided with the weather being reasonable. [1247.86] Curry: So I'm going to get out tomorrow and I'm going to take [1250.62] Curry: two quads of my tricopter with me to get some some filming done [1255.42] Curry: and that that can then make free videos. [1257.78] Curry: And goodness. But yeah, that there's [1261.98] Curry: I wouldn't say I wouldn't say there's this huge game [1265.34] Curry: change of things coming out all the time. [1267.5] Curry: I think there's interesting things coming. [1269.54] Curry: I saw you got the the new walks now goggles and the [1273.02] Curry: to get the gimbal thing. [1275.22] Curry: Which which will look I got it ready, which will look kind of interesting. [1279.62] Curry: I think that's that's quite cool. [1280.94] Curry: And of course, they're putting the code in there for the goggles. [1283.14] Curry: X on the new little ones. [1285.82] Curry: So it's nice to walk snows trying and coming up with with new stuff. [1291.22] Curry: Everybody else, not so much. I'm I'm finding [1296.26] Curry: it's kind of like we've we've got to something where things just work very well. [1301.86] Curry: So there's always there's always a sort of [1305.38] Curry: it's like what you've seen before, but slightly different. [1308.34] Curry: So it's always nice to try and try and make it slightly different, if possible, [1312.02] Curry: or try and look for things that are trying to do it slightly differently. [1316.14] Lee: Is that part of the whole reason kind of circling back to tricopters? [1320.26] Lee: Because that's definitely a place where there's more tinkering to be done. [1325.06] Curry: Yeah, I mean, the reason for that is like my my friend was cleaning out his garage. [1330.66] Curry: He wasn't going to fly any of this stuff. [1332.3] Curry: So he gave me his old 450, which has already been on the exciting acro journey, [1336.94] Curry: which was, wow, frightening and quite an experience, but fun to do. [1341.82] Curry: And he's like, oh, I've got this old one. [1343.78] Curry: I thought, oh, that's good, because I've never tried accruing the tricopter. [1347.06] Curry: My one is sitting up there such sentimental value. [1351.54] Curry: I just take it out and stroke it occasionally. [1353.1] Curry: But I was like, oh, fine, I can smash yours up. [1355.26] Curry: That won't matter. [1356.26] Curry: So anything where, you know, I can take stuff up and have a go. [1359.5] Curry: And the fun thing with that as well is he gave me one of his his old planes, [1365.06] Curry: which is I've got the way they're called now. [1367.14] Curry: They were sold by Hobbie King and they were the ones wing shaped [1370.86] Curry: and they could take off from water as well. [1373.02] Curry: I can't remember what they're called, but I thought that's fun. [1376.74] Curry: And he had his really old OSD that he never got working. [1380.5] Curry: He had the, what was it called? [1384.42] Curry: I think it was the RV OSD. [1386.02] Curry: It was really sort of futuristic for the time. [1389.9] Curry: Back like 10 years ago, the immersion RC one, the easy OSD, are you? [1395.1] Curry: No, no, it wasn't. [1395.86] Curry: It wasn't just down here. [1397.54] Curry: So find it. Doo, doo, doo, doo. [1401.54] Curry: I just happen to have it down here because it's it's ready to try it. [1404.7] Curry: It is cold. [1406.18] Curry: You might recognize it for the size of the thing. [1411.18] Curry: Yeah, RV OSD. [1413.34] Curry: Which looks like this. [1415.42] Curry: Back in the day, it was a really quite advanced. [1419.46] Curry: Yeah, it was fixed wing OSD and it had very, very impressive, like [1425.34] Curry: sort of fonts and little dials that moved. [1428.34] Curry: And I remember we had it in his wing and he bought it. [1431.34] Curry: It was all very excited. [1432.26] Curry: He's like, we were testing it out. [1433.82] Curry: We were holding the wing and we were doing this like the surfaces moved. [1437.06] Curry: Put it up in the sky, flying it along. [1439.3] Curry: And whenever he said, right, I mean, now engaging angle mode, [1442.54] Curry: it would instantly just turn over and start going to die. [1445.74] Curry: And I thought, well, that that would be fun to put in a plane [1449.02] Curry: and see if we can get it working again, because there's no reason for it. [1454.3] Curry: Apart from the fact that it's it's a fun tinkering thing. [1458.42] Curry: And it was it was technical in the day. [1460.9] Curry: And now I want to see if it will work or I will merge a plane with it. [1465.9] Lee: I think it's interesting because [1468.18] Lee: a lot of the people that I bump into in the hobby alike, [1472.18] Lee: I think I can speak for you guys, because, you know, [1474.86] Lee: we've known each other a long time now. [1477.22] Lee: We all have engineering brains. [1479.74] Lee: We like it. We like to tinker and we like to mess around [1482.58] Lee: and we like to do something a little bit different. [1484.54] Lee: And, you know, the idea of buying something that you literally take out [1487.94] Lee: the box and it's already and finished is, you know, it's kind of half the fun [1492.9] Lee: is actually building and setting up and problem solving and doing that stuff. [1496.46] Lee: And it kind of scratches parts of our brain that, you know, back in the day, [1500.14] Lee: I was joking with Jack the other day and saying, if we've been born 100 years ago, [1503.58] Lee: we'd have been building bridges for Isambard Kingdom Brunel [1506.94] Lee: with that kind of where our brains work that way. Right. [1509.7] Lee: But but we don't have that. [1510.9] Lee: So we have this radio control hobby stuff which kind of lets us do that. [1515.02] Lee: And it's really interesting that that you guys are getting involved [1518.9] Lee: in some of the slightly more wacky, satiric stuff. [1523.14] Lee: And I don't know whether that's that's part of it. [1526.62] Lee: Because I know at the moment with the stuff that I'm doing, [1531.3] Lee: I am constantly at the bleeding, leading edge of stuff. [1536.14] Lee: So I never, ever get to feel like Jack was discussing about, [1540.9] Lee: you know, it well, it's a quad with the quad. [1543.34] Lee: The quads kind of perfected now. [1545.3] Lee: We have like four different flavors. [1546.94] Lee: You have the Woop, the Sydney Woop. [1548.78] Lee: You know, you have the five inch and you have the endurance [1552.02] Lee: and we have these different classifications. [1553.78] Lee: But basically, what's the same bloody thing? [1555.86] Lee: You know, it's refined to a point now [1558.5] Lee: where you can just go and buy what you need. [1561.74] Lee: And back in the early days, I remember you talking Wayne about [1564.34] Lee: the first tricopter you built was three [1568.86] Lee: GYF01 gyros from helicopters. [1574.54] Lee: I think you would that early on. [1578.18] Curry: Well, that's what I remember seeing on David's page. [1581.42] Curry: And I was like, what is a gyro and where do I get one? [1584.98] Curry: Unfortunately, but when I actually built it, he'd said, oh, [1588.18] Curry: there's this KK1 controller around. [1591.1] Curry: I was like, oh, this is this is better. [1593.06] Curry: I don't know what those gyro things are, but maybe I could find one of these. [1595.66] Curry: And that's how I he fortunately listed all the parts out [1598.78] Curry: and just go to this hobbyking website and you start putting things in your basket. [1603.18] Curry: And you just do it like that. [1605.34] Curry: But that was pretty early. [1607.22] Lee: I think there are lots of us who a big part of the hobby [1610.5] Lee: is the messing around with technology and having fun with it. [1613.86] Lee: I can see some people in the comments are talking about the fact that [1617.3] Lee: the idea of binding flies because Mr. [1620.78] Lee: Clean Flights in shout out to Dominic, the the father [1625.94] Lee: of B to fly and I now have ultimately or grandfather, I guess, at this point. [1631.54] Lee: You know, he we owe so much to Dominic and I do need to say this. [1635.02] Lee: And I would say even if he wasn't here, you know, the reason that we have [1638.7] Lee: B to fly, the reason that we have I now, the reason we have all this other stuff [1642.3] Lee: in things like rotor flight, you can draw a direct line to the work [1647.58] Lee: that Dominic did back in clean flight days to make base flight [1651.18] Lee: a project that people that go actually develop on. [1653.82] Lee: So, you know, it's Dominic is one of the heroes of the hobby. [1658.06] Lee: And we don't talk about him enough. [1659.58] Lee: So it's nice to see him in the chat. [1661.42] Lee: But back when Dominic was doing his stuff with clean flight, you know, [1666.3] Lee: the only way you could get a quadcopter was to buy all the discrete parts. [1671.18] Lee: The motors were usually back then motors designed for aircraft, [1675.9] Lee: fixed wing aircraft that we were repurposing, you know, the two to one [1679.34] Lee: to nine fifty KV or whatever it was with, you know, and we were using [1684.78] Lee: props from aircraft, you know, fixed wing aircraft as well. [1689.26] Lee: They weren't designed for thrust. [1691.18] Lee: They were designed for kind of more efficiency. [1693.42] Lee: And we cobbled these things together and we got them to fly. [1696.7] Lee: And we were just over the bloody moon and it was it was great. [1699.74] Lee: And now, you know, this it's almost. [1703.5] Lee: I'm not going to I'm going to say it's almost too easy now to make a quad. [1707.98] Lee: You know, I built one. [1710.3] Lee: It's probably the seventh, eighth quad that I've built on the channel over Christmas. [1715.42] Lee: And that was using a speedy be thirty five pound frame, a speedy be stack, [1721.74] Lee: some T motor motors and some gem fan props. [1726.54] Lee: And I put walks now unit as well. [1728.62] Lee: And it was it was so easy. [1731.34] Lee: All the ports that I needed were there. [1733.82] Lee: All the connections that I needed were there. [1737.1] Lee: I didn't have to edit any code. [1740.22] Lee: I just flashed it and told the ports what I wanted them to use in [1744.22] Lee: beta flight and everything burst into life. [1747.26] Lee: I didn't have to spend hours and hours scratching my backside thinking, [1751.98] Lee: well, that didn't work, did it? [1753.26] Lee: And in the old days, you know, you'd sit there with the with the video, [1757.18] Lee: and, you know, pre YouTube days, you download all the stuff from the forums [1762.3] Lee: and hope that there was nothing touchy in the video file. [1764.94] Lee: You download it and you sit there and you'd watch and you'd literally be going along. [1768.94] Lee: And I think we have lost a little bit of that [1772.38] Lee: fun element in the standard part of the of the multi rotor part of the hobby, [1777.5] Lee: because it is everything has been so refined. [1781.02] Lee: It doesn't quite snap together like I go. [1783.82] Lee: But it is a bit and yeah, it doesn't scratch the same itch, I think. [1789.74] Curry: It's true. [1790.22] Curry: I think what we're doing is we're reminiscing in a way. [1794.14] Curry: It's a bit like, you know, we've we've got like very expensive computers or like Xbox Series X [1801.66] Curry: consoles, but everyone likes to go back and occasionally play a Mega driver or a SNES game. [1806.86] Curry: Not that that's particularly easy to connect to your TV right now. [1809.74] Curry: And you might have to blow on the cartridge to get it working and stuff like that. [1812.78] Curry: And it's a bit like flying old stuff. [1815.26] Curry: It's like you're going back to how to the struggle of trying to get it in the air. [1820.22] Curry: But remembering the pure joy, even just hovering. [1825.18] Curry: Oh, my God, it got into the air. [1827.34] Curry: I've done something. [1828.38] Curry: I've made a thing as opposed to it is. [1831.26] Curry: I mean, it's fun to fly and stuff, but it's just like, OK, [1835.1] Curry: it does much the same as the last quad did because they're all [1838.22] Curry: they're all pretty easy now and they all just work. [1839.98] Curry: So getting something a bit silly or or doing something with a plane that makes it silly, [1846.78] Curry: is that that's that's where my my scratch the fun itch for me at the moment, [1851.26] Curry: just doing something like that or doing something really old and see if it still works. [1855.98] Jack: Well, I wouldn't get for a doge OSD. [1863.71] Lee: I think the first ever OSD I had was an Immersion RC Easy OSD. [1868.19] Lee: And it was like it was over 100 pounds and it went on the top of a Nazi 32 quad 3S. [1877.07] Lee: And it was this massive great load of board similar to the thing that you had, [1881.79] Lee: Curry, that, you know, it was kind of all gaffer taped on the top. [1887.39] Lee: And the first time I ever flew it, my goggles steamed up and we ended up smashing it in [1893.15] Lee: in a field because I couldn't see where I was going. [1894.99] Lee: So I was just like, I'm just going to dump it. [1896.91] Lee: And so luckily, my spot was like, oh, I've got a rough idea where that is, [1900.03] Lee: but we kind of went and we recovered it. [1903.87] Lee: But the first ever time flying with an on screen display was just blew my mind. [1909.39] Lee: But what I very quickly realized was that I had to declutter the OSD because I see this [1915.95] Lee: happen a lot is when people get into the hobby, they don't want to, you know, [1919.79] Lee: when they're very new, they don't want to learn the basics first and make a basic [1924.75] Lee: five inch quad. [1926.35] Lee: They want to build a quad that will do 20 kilometers and fly for an hour and a half. [1931.39] Lee: And they want to do special things and add an Arduino that does this, [1934.43] Lee: that and the other and these sensors. [1936.35] Lee: How do I build one of them? [1938.11] Lee: And I don't think they like my answer, which is look, just build a basic [1942.99] Lee: five inch quad first and learn what they are to the possible is like. [1946.27] Lee: And then from there, you can kind of figure out how to do the extra stuff. [1949.79] Lee: Everyone kind of wants to go in at the deep end. [1952.83] Lee: And when they do, you find that when you look at the dump file and the OSD layout, [1959.79] Lee: it's literally got everything turned off. [1962.83] Lee: It's like, you know, like it like lace around the edges of the image. [1967.15] Lee: And for me, it literally does. [1970.99] Lee: It looks like you're looking through, you know, the hem of grandma's dress. [1975.31] Lee: And it was ridiculous. [1976.75] Lee: And there was a whole thing where I went through a stage where I was trying lots of things like [1982.11] Lee: having different OSD tabs. [1983.79] Lee: So I could have one depending on the flight mode. [1985.95] Lee: I was in for what I was doing. [1988.03] Lee: But these days I try and keep it as uncluttered as is humanly possible. [1992.67] Lee: Because I find that otherwise I'm constantly looking at, oh, how fast am I going? [1997.79] Lee: How high am I? [1998.99] Lee: Oh, what milliampere? [2000.11] Lee: Oh, I've hit a tree. [2002.43] Lee: You know, I need I need to keep my eyes in the in the middle of the screen. [2006.35] Lee: I'm just I can't as particular as you get a bit slower and a bit older. [2010.51] Lee: I can't react quick enough to avoid everything. [2013.63] Curry: I used to call my my friends used to fly on an APM. [2017.39] Curry: And he did he did very well. [2018.51] Curry: We used to fly X ends back in the day. [2020.91] Curry: And he built all these really clever little the planes. [2027.07] Curry: Bruce extra used to fly them all the time. [2029.31] Curry: The little X ends, quite a thin nose. [2031.79] Curry: You had to sort of scoop it out to fit 2200 in. [2035.31] Curry: And there was really no room for a flight controller. [2037.95] Curry: He managed to fit this APM in by building all these little connecting shelves. [2041.55] Curry: It was very clever. [2042.51] Curry: But his OSD looked like an Excel spreadsheet. [2044.59] Curry: It was just everything. [2046.19] Curry: I was like, what what I can't I don't know what I'm doing. [2049.95] Curry: And it's like, why have you got this height, which is height [2055.55] Curry: above ground level when we don't know where the ground level is? [2059.31] Curry: This is above sea level rather than where you took off from this. [2062.19] Curry: Yeah, the ASL stuff. [2063.63] Curry: Why do you need to tell that? [2065.63] Curry: Well, I tell you what, though, talk about people going on [2068.83] Curry: and just wanting to like go and do everything. [2071.07] Curry: What constantly gets me about guys starting off is no one ever learns to land. [2078.51] Curry: They can fly forward very fast, which you just do by tilting your camera up and go, [2083.39] Curry: no, but instead of landing, they just I just turn off and I'm near the ground. [2086.75] Curry: And then we'll cartwheel of it and I'll go get it. [2088.43] Curry: It's like, I can't do that. [2090.11] Curry: I'm I'm in this horrendous muddy field, which is either full of cows or mud. [2094.11] Curry: And I have to land on this bit here. [2096.03] Curry: And if I don't, my my quad will sink. [2098.67] Curry: Nobody else has bothered learning that. [2102.75] Lee: I think everyone says I was given a big landing mat. [2108.91] Lee: It's a brand new thing of one of these companies. [2111.23] Lee: And that is bloody brilliant, because I'm the same as you. [2114.67] Lee: Because, you know, I want to fly these these things. [2118.27] Lee: And some of the fields that we fly in are agricultural. [2121.23] Lee: So they're pretty well maintained. [2123.47] Lee: Some of them have been industrial historically. [2126.11] Lee: So whenever you land, you know, 40 percent of the soil is actually [2130.35] Lee: rust, ferrous oxide, and that just gets sucked straight up into it. [2134.35] Lee: So you don't land anywhere. [2136.51] Lee: You know, you have to be really safe. [2139.15] Lee: So now I'm with you. [2140.03] Lee: But then, again, you know, lots of people don't like this opinion either. [2143.79] Lee: I you know, I think that lots of pilots jump over the line of sight thing [2148.19] Lee: into FPV because FPV is is the main part of a hobby now. [2152.19] Lee: And then if FPV fails, there's no fallback. [2155.95] Lee: If you hit your thing for the GPS rescue mode, if it's beta flight [2160.43] Lee: and you cross your fingers and hope you've set it up OK. [2164.27] Lee: Whereas I've had a couple of instances recently where a friend has turned on some kit [2171.15] Lee: that in theory we've tested everything before we start flying. [2174.51] Lee: And then somebody, you know, 10 feet behind or just test something [2178.03] Lee: and I'm flying and go and I'm like, brilliant. [2181.47] Lee: Can't see a thing. [2182.67] Lee: And then and then it's up to either return to home or if you close enough, [2186.99] Lee: whip your goggles up and desperately try and figure out where the bloody thing is. [2190.67] Lee: I mean, because the issue with the quads is that there's no orientation clues at all. [2194.99] Lee: It's that, you know, it's that this this will look the same from every orientation [2200.19] Lee: in the old days. [2200.91] Lee: At least we've used to have great big bloody antennas out the back or [2204.59] Lee: LEDs, which we don't seem to have these days. [2209.31] Lee: Different color. [2210.11] Lee: But do you remember that we had read it? [2211.71] Curry: You couldn't did it actually make any difference? [2215.15] Curry: It didn't. [2215.71] Curry: And it was especially when we're flying bigger ones, [2218.99] Curry: tricopters have this optical illusion. [2221.71] Curry: So it should be like two arms and that one arm is going to be obvious. [2226.19] Curry: But in any depending how you look at it, it's like it could be different ways. [2230.83] Curry: And the same is just an X. [2232.91] Curry: And of course, you can't see colored pops at any distance. [2235.39] Curry: And it's like, okay, is an X coming towards me or going away from me? [2239.95] Curry: And it's just a case of like, I'm going to put it in angle mode. [2242.83] Curry: I'm going to push forward and see if I can determine which way it's going. [2246.67] Curry: And then I'm going to figure it out from there. [2251.15] Lee: When I really helped was was doing a line of sight with fixed wing. [2256.91] Lee: You kind of brought your aileron wobble is actually the easiest way to figure it out. [2263.07] Lee: Is rather than pitch forwards and backwards is actually [2266.03] Lee: just go, you know, do a roll side to side. [2269.95] Lee: And if it's with a stick, it's facing away from you. [2274.11] Lee: If it's the other way around, it's facing towards you. [2277.55] Lee: And if it's side to side, then you just need to spin it until you can see one of those. [2282.83] Lee: Because that's the only way you can do it with a with a plane. [2285.47] Lee: But it's it is I've had friends who can do line of sight really well. [2291.23] Lee: And they can always get their quad or plane back, irrespective of what happens. [2296.91] Lee: I've got guys and girls I know that are just FPV pilots and I get it. [2302.67] Lee: But it just means there's no fallback if something happens to the FPV signal. [2308.99] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, downloaded and edited to make [2313.55] Frank: sense when it played audio only sensors to please the iTunes people hosted on the internet, [2318.59] Frank: forwarded through to your podcast provider, downloaded playing on your device and is now [2322.91] Frank: playing in your ears. All thanks to our Patreons. [2326.27] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. [2329.63] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash. [2332.75] Frank: Let's drone out. [2335.15] Lee: So I was reading today about somebody that complaining that the [2338.59] Lee: their walk snail unit was overheating the route in Florida. [2342.19] Lee: So, yeah, I imagine was it 34 degrees or something out there. [2346.43] Lee: I imagine, yeah, unless you've got the walk snail in airflow probably is going to get bloody warm [2352.27] Lee: because even in a warm summit Sunday day here in the UK, you know, you don't want to put the [2356.91] Lee: HD system in and just sat there soaking before you fly. [2361.55] Lee: I have all of mine on a separate little power connector. [2364.03] Lee: So a suit. [2364.99] Lee: A lot of my planes are obviously I now have one time I was got a GPS lock telemetry set and [2370.43] Lee: it's ready to go. [2371.63] Lee: Then I've got a little JST connector for the power for the walk snail. [2374.91] Lee: And that's literally the last thing that gets plugged in. [2377.55] Lee: And then when it's thrown, hopefully it's going to stay cool. [2380.11] Lee: It usually does. [2381.23] Lee: But it's yeah, it's one of those fun things at the moment. [2384.51] Lee: I've been hearing a lot of people complaining that their [2387.31] Lee: HD systems are overheating in the heat. [2389.71] Curry: They do go quickly, don't they? [2390.91] Curry: I've got this little fan on my desk. [2393.07] Curry: So whenever I need to plug the walk snail in because of the need to power up the cord [2397.47] Curry: as well to like do an update or something, it has to get very quickly behind the fan. [2402.27] Curry: Also, I can't connect the USB. [2404.99] Lee: I have exactly the same kind of thing. [2406.91] Lee: This is one of those little handheld power fans. [2410.19] Lee: And it's it's designed to sit and blow on the walk snail unit. [2415.71] Lee: I mean, even the thing is the DJI stuff gets what gets what they all get warm, [2420.19] Lee: because we're actually asking an awful lot of processing power out of this little box. [2426.83] Lee: And these days, the case is essentially a big bloody heat sink. [2429.71] Lee: If you take the top off any of these units, there's big blobs of thermal paste on these chips. [2434.91] Lee: Desperately trying to get some of the stuff out because, you know, [2438.51] Lee: they try and make this stuff ribbed for your pleasure, [2441.79] Lee: you know, to try and increase the cooling. [2443.71] Lee: But ultimately, does it make that much difference? [2446.67] Lee: I think if it's in the middle of a plane, I don't think it does. [2450.11] Lee: There was a couple of quick questions just about this because we talked about this [2453.15] Lee: and I saw them scroll off the top. [2454.91] Lee: So just FYI for people who are watching and this isn't any kind of advertisement. [2459.63] Lee: This thank you, FX node is walks out of release three gimbals a GM one, GM two and GM three. [2468.99] Lee: They obviously put a huge amount of effort into thinking those names. [2472.99] Lee: This is the GM three. [2475.23] Lee: So it has three axis movement. [2480.99] Lee: Interestingly, the GM one, the GM two, you'd have thought the GM one would have just been pan. [2485.79] Lee: The GM two would have been pan and tilt. [2487.95] Lee: They're not. [2488.67] Lee: So I think obviously someone was smoking something on that day when they came up with that. [2494.27] Lee: The way this works is that the camera goes actually connects to the gimbal. [2499.63] Lee: So hopefully you can see that on this. [2502.19] Lee: There we go. [2502.75] Lee: The camera's finally focused on it and the cable goes into the avatar unit. [2507.47] Lee: Crucially, the really smart thing is that the control for the gimbal is actually coming from [2514.83] Lee: the avatar unit. [2515.79] Lee: So that little cable that you can see there goes into the gimbal directly and the head [2522.91] Lee: tracker unit that's in the walks now goggles is sending the head tracker information directly to [2529.31] Lee: the walks now unit. [2530.83] Lee: So you don't need a radio. [2532.91] Lee: You don't need to take it through the radio and things like the trainer port stuff. [2538.03] Lee: It's actually quite clever. [2539.07] Lee: And then how the gimbal reacts and how you set it up is actually all available in the [2543.15] Lee: menu in the walks now system. [2545.23] Lee: Now, the reason it looks like this is this I'm not going to fly like this. [2550.43] Lee: It's missing wings and lots of other things. [2552.83] Lee: This is the battery hatch for my reptile dragon two, which some of you may have seen [2558.43] Lee: the review on. [2559.07] Lee: It's a big twin. [2561.47] Lee: And it was I got it in specifically because it's designed this. [2565.39] Lee: Look at that for a battery hatch. [2566.67] Lee: It's reinforced. [2568.75] Lee: It even has supports. [2570.59] Lee: It's like somebody actually thought about this. [2572.91] Lee: So I've designed and 3D printed this thing today because one of the things that's the [2578.43] Lee: very bare. [2579.31] Lee: So that battery hatch, it's got walks now in the nose in that in that picture. [2584.51] Lee: But the idea is I'm going to pull the walk sale out of the nose because otherwise those [2588.75] Lee: two antennas are going to kind of be in the way. [2590.59] Lee: So this is this is the replacement that's going to go on the top. [2594.67] Lee: Not sure how it actually performs in practice. [2597.31] Lee: We're going to see. [2598.59] Lee: But I'm very excited about the idea of having head tracking. [2608.51] Lee: That's that just works and is simple and I don't have to have some kind of cable going [2613.15] Lee: from my goggles into the radio, which which you can set the walks now system up to do that. [2619.23] Lee: But the idea that that, you know, if you if you had it with a car or a boat or anything, [2624.75] Lee: I think it's really, really cool. [2626.35] Lee: The problem is, is that we're talking we're we're getting expensive again [2629.87] Lee: because the gimbal is about 100 quid. [2632.75] Lee: The avatar units, 100 and odd quid. [2634.99] Lee: So that's what, 230 pounds, 250 quid. [2638.75] Lee: I've mounted it on a battery hatch. [2641.07] Lee: I might I might regret that. [2644.43] Lee: But if you know if something happens to this, but this is there kind of there for [2648.67] Lee: their moonlight camera with an ND filter. [2651.31] Lee: It's all it's beautiful stuff. [2654.51] Lee: I just hope it bloody works. [2655.95] Lee: That's the only thing because colleagues definitely have been very. [2661.23] Lee: It's the magnets on it are ridiculous. [2666.43] Lee: They the reptile, like I say, I've never seen another battery hatch where they've [2671.15] Lee: actually reinforced the battery hatch with balsa spas. [2676.43] Lee: It's the first one I've ever seen on that kind of plane. [2680.03] Lee: And it's one of those. [2681.15] Lee: I would, isn't it? [2683.79] Lee: It's there's wooden inserts. [2685.95] Lee: Let's call them that. [2688.19] Lee: But no, but normally this thing would flex like billio. [2692.43] Lee: But it's actually it's actually pretty good. [2694.67] Lee: So we'll give it a shot. [2695.47] Lee: We'll give it a fly and see how it goes. [2697.39] Lee: But I when walks now told me about because obviously the the new goggles have the [2703.55] Lee: head tracking thing in it. [2706.11] Lee: I assumed when they said that was in it, that what that meant was we're going to have to have [2709.87] Lee: cable from the bottom going into the top of the radio and set it up like we've used [2714.27] Lee: head trackers forever. [2716.11] Lee: I didn't realize that what they've done is they've made it so the signal goes directly [2720.51] Lee: from the goggles to the gimbal. [2724.11] Lee: How does that work at range and that stuff? [2726.43] Lee: Yeah, that's a Trinity head tracker. [2730.35] Lee: Fat shark. [2732.75] Lee: But yeah, so so so hopefully that answers for those of you that were interested [2739.31] Lee: in how that works. [2740.59] Lee: The other thing that Curry was talking about is support for this. [2744.51] Lee: These gimbals is actually already added to iNav8. [2748.91] Lee: So iNav8 already has all of that stuff. [2751.95] Lee: So you're going to be able to do things with it with iNav8, which is which makes me very happy [2757.63] Lee: because obviously I'm a I'm an iNav fan. [2759.71] Lee: I've looked at projects since it was started by Constantine back in the day. [2763.95] Jack: I enjoyed touring to Constantine. [2766.03] Jack: FX node asks, is there any lag? [2769.95] Lee: We shall try it and we shall see. [2774.03] Jack: Tune into painless. [2775.71] Lee: Tune into painless. [2777.15] Lee: Stay tuned. [2778.27] Lee: I need a reasonably still day. [2780.91] Lee: I'm going to need moral support because the thing is I haven't flown a head tracker in [2788.03] Lee: a very long time. [2789.95] Lee: I set one up. [2790.83] Lee: I set a couple of ones up with Hobbyking. [2794.35] Lee: Did a really it's actually quite cheap and nasty kind of a pan and tilt setup. [2800.03] Lee: And I put it on a Bixler or two and it was okay. [2803.71] Lee: But it wasn't great because it was just using kind of servos rather than you know, [2809.31] Lee: this is a proper gimbal with little stepper motors in it. [2814.27] Lee: So when you moved it was you know, it was kind of that clunk clunk clunk thing. [2817.55] Lee: And if you've ever done any head tracking and it and it and it does have a lag, [2823.63] Lee: it makes you feel quite queasy. [2825.79] Lee: It's like that VR thing that you sometimes get. [2829.15] Lee: So so we'll see. [2830.43] Lee: And I don't know whether it's going to lag. [2832.59] Lee: I also because it's coming from the goggles, if that means that because in the walks now, [2838.83] Lee: goggles, one of the antennas, so in the walks now goggles, [2843.87] Lee: this antenna transmits and the rest. [2846.67] Lee: Listen, so this has got to be the one because this is going to get the [2851.23] Lee: head tracker updated firmware this month. [2854.91] Lee: Probably shouldn't have said that. [2855.79] Lee: But anyway, said it now. [2857.15] Lee: So this this is going to be sending out the head tracker stuff. [2861.63] Lee: So what happens if this doesn't hear it? [2864.91] Lee: If there's a bit of a hiccup, you know, does that mean what happens to the gimbal? [2868.99] Lee: Does it stay in position? [2870.27] Lee: How smart is it? [2871.95] Lee: Don't know. [2872.51] Lee: I think we just need to fly and see. [2874.83] Curry: I think just looking backwards at the floor as they will do when they go wrong. [2880.59] Lee: Yeah, we shall. [2882.11] Lee: Yeah. [2882.35] Lee: And hopefully it's not going to have to survive too many crashes because this is [2886.35] Lee: it's a beautiful stable plane. [2887.95] Lee: I wouldn't I wouldn't strap this amount of money onto the top of anything else [2892.59] Lee: because of the plot. [2893.39] Lee: You know, that that tendency to flip over, you know, that that would be bad. [2898.67] Lee: But hopefully that big thing will be fine. [2901.15] Curry: I think it'd be good. [2902.35] Curry: I've had friends that like back in the day, the old free access gimbals and cameras in there. [2908.43] Curry: And even before, like the stabilization that the moonlight kit will give you, [2912.75] Curry: they look really good. [2913.95] Curry: It creates a really interesting effect if you if you sort of have it facing forward [2919.15] Curry: and then you turn the plane, sometimes you just get sort of this third person view of [2923.79] Curry: the plane coming going around and you can see it there. [2927.47] Curry: I think I think it's going to be quite exciting if it works. [2932.99] Lee: As somebody that can't have done some micro lighting and things like that, [2936.67] Lee: you tend to look into the turn anyway. [2939.71] Lee: And actually, if you think about it from a car driving your car perspective, [2943.31] Lee: you don't kind of continue looking straight out the windscreen. [2945.79] Lee: You start turning and then just hope that the, you know, the road you're turning into [2950.03] Lee: doesn't include small children. [2951.95] Lee: You actually do. [2953.23] Lee: It's quite natural for you to look in the direction that you're going to go. [2957.55] Lee: And then for the vehicles, they kind of come around in the direction that you're looking. [2961.31] Lee: So it's actually more natural than you think. [2963.63] Lee: It's just we're so used to an FPV land, just, you know, having one fixed view. [2971.55] Lee: It's going to be interesting to see how it actually works. [2974.03] Lee: I'm genuinely excited about this. [2975.87] Lee: This is one of the few things I've been really excited about because, you know, [2980.59] Lee: I was talking to Jack before I my ambition when I started all this FPV rubbish, [2987.15] Lee: God knows how many years ago, was I wanted to feel the way that I did [2992.51] Lee: when I had those wonderful dreams of flight. [2994.51] Lee: You know, you get them once in a blue moon and you're able to fly through the sky [2998.83] Lee: and you can see the towers is and all that fantastic kind of Peter Pan effect. [3003.55] Lee: That's what I wanted from FPV. [3005.47] Lee: HD FPV gets you close, but I'm hoping being able to look around as I'm, you know, [3011.95] Lee: would actually be the missing thing that makes it feel a little bit magic. [3017.07] Lee: Hopefully it does. [3018.03] Lee: And just doesn't basically stuff the plane into the ground [3020.83] Lee: because I'm not looking where I'm bloody going. [3023.07] Lee: We shall see somebody say Trinity Drift tracker right where it belongs, [3029.86] Lee: not in the goggles. [3034.18] Lee: Yeah, that's the that's the issue. [3036.1] Lee: I don't know that the issue that you have with a lot of these head trackers [3041.54] Lee: is the readings from the IMU change as the IMU warms up. [3047.7] Lee: So with a head tracker, you were always supposed to and nobody ever did. [3052.18] Lee: You're supposed to have the goggles powered for several minutes in the environment [3057.14] Lee: that you're going to fly them in, you know, in the sunshine in Florida or whatever it is [3060.82] Lee: and let the system warm up and then center everything and then fly. [3064.74] Lee: Because if you fly too quickly as the goggles and the circuitry warm up, [3069.06] Lee: then you will get that drift. [3071.46] Lee: The way to get round it is actually to try and the it's a nine doff. [3081.7] Lee: If you can't remember doff, we used to talk about doff a lot. [3087.06] Lee: Degrees of freedom, but it's got six. [3089.54] Lee: No, mine's got nine. [3091.06] Lee: And then someone came up with 12. [3092.74] Lee: And I'm not sure how that exactly works. [3094.5] Lee: But the idea was he had three axis gyro, a three axis solarometer, [3099.62] Lee: and you had a three axis compass. [3102.74] Lee: And the compass is actually a really good way to help with drift. [3106.98] Lee: Because in theory, you know, a compass shouldn't change the heading it reads [3111.54] Lee: as the IMU warms up. [3113.62] Lee: So by by adding that in, you can get much better. [3116.18] Lee: I don't think the Trinity had it. [3118.18] Lee: Interestingly, looking in these walks now things, it looks like it has a compass [3122.9] Lee: as part of the part of the head tracker array. [3126.74] Lee: And if it does, that'll be quite good. [3128.82] Lee: I hope it doesn't drift. [3129.78] Lee: I'm going to be very sad, because it literally took me two hours [3132.82] Lee: to design that 3D printable piece this morning. [3135.7] Curry: Well, I think there is a way of recentering. [3138.98] Curry: It's like a free button press, isn't it? [3141.22] Curry: On the goggles. [3142.02] Lee: Yeah, the middle on the side of the goggles. [3146.82] Lee: See, I've actually I've actually had all I've got the props today, boys. [3150.82] Lee: So on the side of the goggles, that middle button, if you press it three times, [3155.7] Lee: that recenters everything. [3158.1] Lee: So that's that's the way they did it, which I'm really pleased about. [3160.66] Lee: Because when they sent this, I was like, how do you recenter the gimbal? [3164.98] Lee: Because that wasn't written down anywhere. [3167.54] Lee: And they said, Oh, you press that three times. [3170.58] Lee: I was like, Okay, actually, but for the pudding, but it's like, yeah, [3175.62] Lee: I wasn't going to figure that out without without it being taught. [3179.38] Lee: The only thing wrong with ease. [3180.74] Lee: They didn't make them wise enough for glasses. [3184.83] Jack: I'm devastated. [3187.39] Curry: I think I saw that Facebook page they were talking about their little lens inserts. [3192.83] Curry: Today. [3195.15] Lee: Yeah, I think like I expect, you know, going back to the gimbal thing, [3198.91] Lee: I expect they will make the gimbals that a simple pan and a pan and tilt, [3203.79] Lee: because one thing walks now does do very well, is they do listen. [3207.79] Lee: And unlike a lot of Chinese companies, they do take constructive criticism quite well. [3213.39] Lee: Whereas a lot of other Chinese, I mean, you must have the same thing. [3216.43] Lee: You go back to them, you go, Oh, that's not very good. [3219.95] Lee: And, you know, you kind of get that stony, you know, stony silence. [3223.39] Lee: You don't get the reply. [3225.31] Curry: I have some suggestions for you. [3227.15] Curry: No, we're going to do it our way. [3228.19] Curry: Thanks all the same. [3229.47] Lee: No, no, no, I'm sure I'm sure people will be fine. [3232.03] Lee: Yeah, great. [3232.67] Lee: Okay. [3232.99] Lee: I'll cover it in the video then. [3234.59] Lee: But but yeah, it's it's it's been quite good. [3237.63] Lee: I'm I am pleased with the walk now system. [3240.83] Lee: And although it sounds like I'm plugging this, please do not take if you're [3245.15] Lee: listening to this, do not take that away from this. [3247.39] Lee: There are lots of what HD systems available on the market. [3250.75] Lee: None of them are perfect. [3252.11] Lee: All of them have flaws. [3255.47] Lee: Do your own research would be my advice, because you would think looking at YouTube [3260.43] Lee: that, you know, some some pundits are, you know, this is the way to go. [3265.47] Lee: walks now just happens to work for me. [3267.47] Lee: And that's a big part of that is because I'm I'm a fixed wing and a quad pilot. [3272.83] Lee: I do both. [3273.87] Lee: And and it actually works really well for both. [3278.59] Lee: So so yeah, I'll just I'll caveat everything I'm saying with that, because I've because [3283.47] Lee: it's one of those weird things. [3284.99] Lee: I don't know if you find it, but there's these little we've always had camps in the hobby, [3291.23] Lee: who are who are very defensive of their particular position. [3295.47] Lee: So if you if you say anything that is any way derogatory or could be construed as [3300.51] Lee: derogatory to their position, they they they just get very annoyed at you. [3307.71] Lee: And the problem is, is, you know, everyone has an opinion. [3310.59] Lee: I did this video the other day about why I hate best and better. [3316.19] Lee: I don't know if you saw that one. [3319.07] Lee: Because the number of things that you read, oh, DJI is better. [3324.27] Lee: Or no, HD zeros best. [3327.47] Lee: And you have all these comments under a walks now video. [3330.43] Lee: And then you go and see the DJI video. [3332.59] Lee: And everyone goes, oh, DJI wouldn't trust him as far as I can throw him walks nails better. [3338.27] Lee: Full stop. [3339.95] Lee: And you kind of you kind of go, well, that's neither used to bloody ornament. [3343.55] Lee: Because what's what's better and best for me, which kind of I guess finishes the point I was [3348.83] Lee: making is not necessarily better and best for other people. [3352.43] Lee: And a lot of people, a lot of viewers, I think, watch content creators that they trust [3359.39] Lee: and take everything they say at face value. [3362.67] Lee: And, you know, one of the things I have under all my videos is going to your own research. [3366.91] Lee: Don't take what I say as gospel. [3370.03] Lee: You know, I'm quite clear. [3374.91] Lee: Yeah, I mean, if you if you're a pilot that wants the same things that flies the same way [3379.63] Lee: that has the same experiences and the same expectations, then, yeah, [3383.07] Lee: it's probably probably a good choice for you. [3385.23] Lee: But, you know, there's a bit more fanning about with walks now than there is with other systems [3389.87] Lee: because it's designed to work with all I now the beta flight and sneaky FBV fonts. [3394.75] Lee: You've got these third party apps now that you can recreate the OSD. [3398.27] Lee: It's the whole, you know, it's integrated into things like I now it's it's a whole ecosystem. [3403.07] Lee: So if you're not willing to play and tinker, you know, you can't you won't get the best [3408.27] Lee: out of it because the default fonts aren't great. [3412.03] Curry: I think it's people also justifying their their purchase when they when they have a go. [3417.71] Curry: It's not like I think it's better is I bought this one. [3420.19] Curry: Thus, I want it to be best, which is, as you say, it depends who you are. [3425.39] Curry: There's there's another camp of people, of course, that will say, well, [3427.55] Curry: I don't want this open access to the source code. [3429.79] Curry: I need an open source solution. [3431.47] Curry: Not many, but they're very enthusiastic about it when they do talk about it. [3437.18] Lee: I yeah, I'm a fan of the open source projects. [3441.5] Lee: I must admit, as time has gone on, you know, I mean, the first thing I really got [3445.66] Lee: exposed to was that multi-week code. [3448.22] Lee: And then Dominic was really kind and generous with his time when he got into clean flight. [3453.1] Lee: And he helped me understand to get my head around that in the early days. [3457.98] Lee: And I just like the whole open source keep the way it works. [3462.7] Lee: It does require a little bit more effort because the manuals are terrible. [3467.18] Lee: The documentation always lags. [3469.26] Lee: You know, the non the developers really want to do the documentation. [3473.1] Lee: So, you know, you have that whole thing. [3475.98] Lee: But actually, these days, a lot of these projects, [3478.86] Lee: which we look at what they were like when they started out, [3481.18] Lee: the documentation is miles better these days and they've ever been. [3484.46] Lee: And you've got people like you and me and others making videos. [3487.74] Lee: So if you if reading a 20 page document isn't the way that you absorb information, [3493.42] Lee: there's loads of other ways that you can go now. [3495.74] Lee: And have kind of easily stepped through all the processes via a video. [3501.02] Lee: Because I learn visually, I'm one of those people that although I can read a manual [3505.34] Lee: and I can get it, if I can watch a video and somebody shows me the five steps, [3509.58] Lee: I'm like, bingo, got it. [3511.18] Lee: I can do that now. [3513.42] Lee: I just, you know, I just think that the close source stuff for me, [3518.38] Lee: I don't find it as interesting. [3519.74] Lee: And I think it's going back to what we talked about before that tinkering aspect. [3523.42] Lee: You know, the fact that there is that integration with these [3526.54] Lee: these other open source projects. [3528.14] Lee: And the sum becomes greater than the, you know, the value of it becomes greater than the parts. [3535.02] Lee: Because, you know, on a walk snail plane with with sneaky fonts and a walk snail system, [3541.34] Lee: it is is fantastic. [3543.5] Lee: It's really good. [3544.14] Lee: But you do have to go through six to the video was to get to the end for it to all work really, [3550.54] Lee: really well. [3551.34] Lee: But for me, that's [3553.02] Lee: that scratches that itch, you know, it's not going back to use an old flight controller, [3559.18] Lee: because I'm, you know, I'm constantly having to email manufacturers whose documentation [3564.7] Lee: isn't quite there. [3565.58] Lee: Like, you know, how do you send to the head tracker? [3568.86] Lee: Because you haven't written that down. [3571.18] Lee: But that's a constant thing with me. [3572.7] Lee: I'm always doing it. [3574.62] Lee: And particularly, I don't know if you get sent a lot of this stuff, the beta stuff for testing. [3579.42] Lee: Sorry for the air quotes. [3582.78] Lee: And a lot of the things that you get in, the hardware is about right, it's about final, [3589.02] Lee: but they're constantly revving the firmware and the settings. [3592.7] Lee: So you get to the point where you're ready to take it to the field and fly and they go, [3598.38] Lee: actually, here's a new bit of firmware, you need to update the whatever is with this latest thing. [3605.1] Lee: And you kind of go great, well, I can't fly now until I've done that. [3607.74] Lee: Because if I fly it, because I had I had a plane in the other week. [3613.5] Lee: It was an unusual plane. [3615.66] Lee: I don't know if you saw it, it was a one that had the body was slung under the wings [3620.14] Lee: as like a separate secondary hole. [3623.02] Lee: And that's where the camera and the flight controller and things were in. [3625.5] Lee: It's a bit of an unusual, unusual thing. [3631.82] Lee: Yeah, it's a higher hand Firefly, I think is what it's called. [3636.3] Lee: And the really interesting thing is that it was a pre production unit and they were clear [3642.06] Lee: it was pre production. [3643.98] Lee: And a lot, a number of people as soon as they got the plane made a flight review video. [3651.28] Lee: And I was kind of going, I'm not doing that until it's got the same configuration firmware and [3657.92] Lee: setup as what a customer is going to get. [3660.8] Lee: Otherwise, there is no point in me, I feel doing a flight review video because if I do [3666.56] Lee: a flight review video, and there are issues, and I point those issues out, which have [3670.56] Lee: subsequently been fixed by the settings that manufacturers sent everybody else, [3675.76] Lee: then that doesn't represent the product very well. [3678.4] Lee: Similarly, if I fly it and it works really well, and then subsequently they do something [3683.28] Lee: that makes it worse, I'm misrepresenting it too. [3687.76] Lee: I think there's definitely this weird thing at the moment where there's such pressure [3692.56] Lee: to do your videos first, that in the old days, we'd get something and we might tinker with it [3699.68] Lee: for three or four weeks, and then we'd make our considered review. [3705.04] Lee: And there seems to be so much pressure on now if they've had it three or four minutes [3708.64] Lee: before they're making the video, we're probably doing okay. [3712.32] Lee: And I'm sorry, you cannot get a full breadth, deep understanding of the products, its performance [3719.04] Lee: if you've only had it a day and you've done two flights on it. [3723.44] Lee: If you live with it and you learn all its foibles and the stuff you like and you don't, [3729.2] Lee: that's the point, in my humble opinion, where you have enough experience to make a useful review. [3735.92] Lee: And I think too much of the content creation that we're doing at the moment, [3739.6] Lee: like I said before, I think content creation is now considered a viable career option. [3744.8] Lee: It's about just getting paid to just create the content and a lot of the channels that are out [3749.84] Lee: there are getting paid to buy the manufacturers to make the videos that they do because of the [3756.56] Lee: audience that they have. And if they're getting paid to do a video, then it's not a review, [3761.6] Lee: it's an advertisement and they're not being clear about that. I know that's happening quite a lot. [3766.88] Lee: And I just wish people were a bit more honest because if you see 10 videos and nine of them [3771.84] Lee: says something's amazing, and one of them, that's the considered one says, who are you going to [3777.68] Curry: believe? And probably that last one comes out three weeks after the first nine. So it's already [3785.12] Curry: done and dusted at that point, isn't it? Yeah, you've already placed your order. [3791.52] Lee: So even you go, oh, you don't know what it's talking about, it'll be fine. And then you're [3795.28] Lee: into that justification thing that we talked about before where, no, I've spent 300 quid on it, [3800.4] Lee: it's, you know, I'm going to be great. Although, to be fair, I'll tell you what, I had a plane in [3808.8] Lee: this week, it's one of a new, you know, like this classic Bixler Skywalker style, [3813.68] Lee: where you have the motor and prop at the back on a kind of dorsal nacelle, and you have a thin nose [3819.44] Lee: high wings that kind of go up at the ends, that classic design that's been around forever. [3824.32] Lee: There was a new plane listed on Banggood, and I had to go with the one, the little range of [3829.12] Lee: Atlantic 600 millimeter train of things. Oh, yeah. I actually really loved it. It was really good [3837.12] Lee: fun. Because I used to do a lot of Bixler flying back in the day, I used to love Bixlers, you know, [3842.16] Lee: there were 60, 70 quid. And if you smash one, then, you know, it wasn't the end of the world. [3846.8] Lee: Anyway, this thing was about 170, 180 pounds. So I thought, okay, and it's a new one, this has got [3854.32] Lee: to be the modern interpretation of that classic Skywalker Bixler, Volantis Ranger style. Let's get [3863.04] Lee: one in and have a look because I'm, you know, I had that experience with a small Volantis Ranger, [3867.84] Lee: let's see what the state of the art looks like. And it arrived of the videos out next month. So [3873.2] Lee: everyone that's listening to this, you know, you can just skip that one when it comes out. But the [3878.0] Lee: but it was something that if we'd have got it eight, 10 years ago, would have still said, [3882.88] Lee: it's a bit like everyone else in it. And this thing is just and it's 180 quid. And it hasn't [3889.52] Lee: got room for a flight controller or stabilizer. There's no where you put a GPS. There's no [3894.56] Lee: no thought about where FPV equipment would go. There's no CG marks molded in the underside of [3900.0] Lee: the wing. Christ's sake. There is things like there's no carbon fiber reinforcing rods in the [3905.76] Lee: control surfaces. The servos are plastic and log. And it's just like, wow, sorry, if I spent 170 [3917.12] Lee: 180 quid for this, I would be desperately trying to hide it from the lady wife before, you know, [3922.56] Lee: before she found out that on the credit card. But it's really interesting. We said that the still, [3928.8] Lee: I thought we were past the phase of where things were brought out that were expensive and really [3934.96] Lee: didn't deliver because we lost a lot of that when the bubble burst after the quad thing five, six [3939.6] Curry: years ago. Maybe they've just found the mold for the old Bixa style and they're just like, oh, we [3944.72] Jack: just made that like chuck on a couple of dollar surveys and we're away. I just put in a E LRS [3954.72] Jack: receiver in the Bixla last week. Thank you, Lee. You're very welcome. Express LRS it's the future. [3964.0] Jack: There's a radio behind as well. The power monitoring as well. [3974.32] Lee: Yeah. May take did some weird things with that express LRS. I haven't heard the latest on that [3978.4] Lee: because they, they decided they weren't going to play with the projects anymore. Didn't they hear [3984.08] Jack: about that? Yeah. We're going to send hardware to developers. [3993.52] Jack: I, I still miss the battery individual cell monitoring. You know, one of those little [3998.96] Curry: things that I sent you, Lee from free sky. Yeah. They were, they were, you just used to fly around [4012.24] Jack: as it started beeping. And then, yeah, that one I sent you was open, but unused. That has never [4020.96] Lee: been in aircraft. It's actually in my battery box now because the really nice thing is, is it, [4027.12] Lee: it's the, the display on it is backlit. You know, it's like an LCD display in it. So, [4034.0] Lee: so you can read it in all weathers. Whereas the ones that I had before, you couldn't read it for [4038.32] Lee: some was out. You see, this is this interesting thing as well. We've, we've got to this. [4043.36] Lee: There's some things that aren't on the channel yet that will be out soon. I can't talk about, [4048.24] Lee: but LCD displays on radios. I still love LCD displays because I can read them because if it's, [4058.32] Lee: if it's twilight, it's backlit. I can read them. If it's, you know, in the four days in the UK, [4063.36] Lee: where we get sunshine, I can still read it. Whereas with my TX 16 S with its beautiful, [4068.88] Lee: bright screen that with a touch and all the rest of it, I'm having to do that thing where you kind [4073.44] Lee: of have to lean over to, you know, to get it in the shade. So you can read, see the bloody thing. [4077.68] Jack: All the beavers are Barthead classic of pulling your t-shirt over your head. [4084.24] Lee: That's it. So you could read the bloody thing. So there's a couple of radios coming out that [4088.16] Lee: actually have LCD displays in which I am over the moon about, because it means that I can actually [4094.48] Lee: use them when the sun is out for those four days that we have sunshine in the UK. And yeah, we, [4101.76] Lee: I think we all got a little bit sucked into the color screens, in my humble opinion, [4105.36] Lee: because the only time we look at the screen is one much picking the right bloody model. [4109.6] Lee: And then once we're flying, we've got bloody goggles on. Anyway, [4112.72] Lee: 99% of the time, we're not looking at the radio. It's audible alerts. [4120.0] Jack: Unfortunately, that is all we've got time for. [4125.28] Lee: Oh, we're not going to talk about 3d printing. We're not going to talk about BL heli alternatives. [4130.88] Jack: We're not going to talk about NDAs. Oh, I know. Well, I did wiggle some bloody 3d printing [4139.44] Jack: nest. I didn't even carry hasn't had the joys of pet G. Yeah. And I honestly, mate, seriously. Yeah. [4152.64] Curry: Next year without like dying from the fumes. [4155.84] Lee: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's it doesn't, it doesn't think like like you've like you've thrown some [4160.72] Jack: plastic in the bonfire and spray paint the smooth side of glass from one of your wonderful [4170.32] Jack: patreons. I may, may add one of your personal patreons. Wonderful. The wonderful Caroline Tyler [4184.96] Lee: um fab. Yeah, my like dusting of hairspray and it and it tacks up. The thing is it prints. [4194.8] Lee: It's almost as easy to print as PLA, but it's almost as tough as ABS. So you get the best of [4201.12] Lee: both worlds and it doesn't stink. And it's it's so nice. So I use pet G. And sorry. [4211.68] Lee: Oh, god, I've got myself mixed up. I use PLA tough, which is actually really good and super easy, [4220.72] Lee: or the pet G. And they're the two filaments I use for the hobby all the time. That's that black [4225.76] Lee: thing there. That's got the antennas and made of several different pieces that the camera can't [4230.32] Lee: pick up at all is pet G. And I'm I've just ordered my third roll of it. It's, it's fab, [4238.8] Lee: dead easy 210 degrees for your hot end. Warm the bed to 5060 just to help it adhere with the [4245.36] Jack: first couple of layers and it will print like butter. It was a question. Is the drone industry [4254.08] Jack: trying to get rid of the hobby? That was I thought that was quite an interesting question. [4260.64] Lee: Yeah, that's a talent. That's like a five to 10 minute answer is the is the kind of the full thing. [4265.84] Lee: No, I don't think it is. But then the it depends what we're classifying as the as the drone part, [4271.36] Lee: the hobby. You know, you have lots of organizations that supply us as hobbyists who are also involved [4278.96] Lee: in the creation of drone systems used in theaters of war. Some some people recently have been very, [4288.32] Lee: you know, they're not speculation about Rocha right and others. Interestingly, [4292.64] Lee: I'm aware that most people manufacturing motors, ESCs, flight controllers, frames, [4298.48] Lee: ready to fly, bind and fly FPV systems, goggle manufacturers, I've all been involved in some way, [4305.52] Lee: shape or form. You know, I think the issue now is that drone, if I because I hate the D word, [4312.8] Lee: I've always hated the D word. I was a massive issue. I have. [4316.88] Lee: Drones and win. You couldn't win. Because, you know, we were flying a couple of months ago, [4325.36] Lee: a flying FPV wing, actually, and an old lady stopped at the foot at the foot at the field [4332.64] Lee: on the gate. And I was spotting for my buddy. And she said, Is that a drone? [4338.0] Lee: So I was like, Adam, I'm just gonna have bear with me, man. So I was kind of trying to watch [4346.32] Lee: as I kind of backed up trying not to step in any cow parts got to this gate, and said to the lady, [4352.0] Lee: No, it's a it's a radio controlled airplane. And she's like, Oh, it's okay, then. But it but it's [4360.4] Lee: all in a name, right? So anyway, the drone thing. But I don't think I think in terms of where the [4366.16] Lee: money is for manufacturers of components, the hobby is no longer where they can make the most [4372.96] Lee: money. However, if you look at the best place to test new technology, I think the hobby is a [4384.42] Lee: fantastic place for people like, you know, three letter Chinese companies to release technology to [4391.62] Lee: optimize it gets to pay for the privilege. And then when it's optimized, use it in another way, [4397.62] Lee: shape or form. I don't think they're trying to get rid of the hobby at all. I think if you look [4401.62] Lee: at the profit margins of supplying drone equipment to the hobby versus the profit margins of supplying [4408.18] Lee: drone equipment for other uses, you know, it's, it's completely different scale. And it might end [4415.78] Lee: up that things get developed for other purposes that we get our hands on in the hobby and vice [4421.78] Lee: versa. But I don't think they're trying to kill the hobby all I think legislators are. [4425.94] Jack: But that's a whole other thing. All right. Yeah. If you want more of this, please forward your [4434.98] Jack: emails to Lee to get him to come back on LDO. So if you've enjoyed this, if you're an audio listener, [4443.7] Jack: have a look. It's live on YouTube every Thursday. But if you're a big fan of Lee as we are, and enjoy [4451.54] Jack: and want him back even sooner to cover the other topics we had lined up, please go to his channel [4457.78] Jack: link in the description. And then you'll notice there's an about and there's a contact thing. And [4464.02] Jack: if you prove that you're a human, you can email him and have the subject as let's turn out, [4471.54] Jack: get your ass back on there. He might return sooner than once a year. And we will have to [4478.58] Jack: Vic Steven. But you know, oh, well. Um, so [4485.78] Lee: very quick question before we just finish up the sun and dad FPV has been asking a lot of stuff [4490.34] Lee: about 3D printing. I guessing the question about is it temp resistant was related to [4498.1] Lee: PETG PETG is not a higher temperature filament as [4503.46] Lee: a BS. But the really nice thing about PETG is that it's still very stable at the higher [4512.74] Lee: temperatures. But crucially, it, it doesn't expand like ABS when it gets warm. So you don't have the [4520.9] Lee: issues with bed adhesion. But also as it gets hot, you don't find that the actual print changes [4526.5] Lee: dimensions, which is really quite cool as well. Sorry to interrupt you, Jack. So it just it was a [4532.5] Lee: great loads of really good questions in here. We didn't get to I know where were you where we [4537.62] Jack: started the show, you people. Also massive shout out to sin jazz. Thank you for being the one person [4550.02] Jack: who watches on Twitch. I really appreciate that is the end of the show. Email Lee if you want him [4555.62] Jack: back on. You've been listening to lecture and now you've been joined by everyone's favorite [4559.54] Jack: current kitten. Goodbye. Leave pain to 360. Hello. And I've been bright until I fly. Thank you and [4569.62] Jack: good night. Bye. Happy flying telemetry loss.
