[121.38] Stephen: I did, we managed one pack, but one pack took like two hours of work

[126.38] Stephen: I'll let you guys explain what you've been up to
[130.38] Frank: Go on, Curry, you had your hand up
[132.38] Curry: Well, I was due to go a week and a half ago
[135.38] Curry: but then I was busy having Covid, which is what Jack's got this week
[138.38] Curry: which is why he's not here
[140.38] Curry: So I managed to go out yesterday
[142.38] Curry: and literally doing the Mad Doctor Englishman go out in the midday sun
[146.38] Curry: because I just went out and sat in the middle of a field in the sun
[149.38] Curry: whilst cows terrorised me
[151.38] Curry: and I flew three things
[154.38] Curry: I was flying a five inch quad with walk snail in
[159.38] Curry: because walk snail asked me to make a video showing what race mode is
[165.38] Curry: and if you don't know, race mode on walk snail puts it in 540p
[171.38] Curry: and should conform to the actual race and channels
[177.38] Curry: and I flew that and it looked a bit crap, quite honestly
[181.38] Curry: because when it, if you've flown walk snail and if you use focus mode
[185.38] Curry: if the signal gets dodgy, you get, it's similar to GGI
[188.38] Curry: on the edges, you get pixelation and it's good in the middle
[193.38] Curry: on race mode, it seems like the entire image goes pixely
[198.38] Curry: so suddenly you're flying along and then it's like a spectrum
[201.38] Curry: for old people, that's not very high resolution
[205.38] Curry: and the other idea is it's supposed to keep the latency very, very similar
[212.38] Curry: so that obviously racers would know suddenly if the latency changed
[217.38] Curry: and it was mostly 24, 25 milliseconds
[220.38] Curry: but when I went round a tree, I was trying to simulate extreme conditions and stuff
[226.38] Curry: so I had three trees in a line and when I did that
[229.38] Curry: apart from it going all squiddly on the resolution, it did fly out to 35 milliseconds
[235.38] Curry: interestingly when I tried it in its normal mode
[238.38] Curry: focus mode worked much better where it just pixelated the ends
[242.38] Curry: and gave me the thing and it didn't go out as much
[245.38] Curry: but of course the problem with going in normal mode
[248.38] Curry: is it takes up two lots of bandwidth so it wouldn't play nicely with...
[254.38] Stephen: So it's less bandwidth than 25 megabit mode, it's even less than 25
[260.38] Stephen: What is less than 25, sorry?
[262.38] Stephen: The race mode, because the normal mode, you've got like a 25 megabit
[265.38] Stephen: and you've got a 50 megabit and then...
[268.38] Curry: I was talking about the frequency is much wider, isn't it?
[273.38] Stephen: Yeah, the normal mode is directly related to the megabit
[276.38] Stephen: so the bandwidth is literally the width of the frequency band, right?
[282.38] Curry: Oh yeah, but even in the low bandwidth model, what is it?
[289.38] Curry: The normal rather than the high, it's still wider than one channel, isn't it?
[295.38] Stephen: Is it still transmitting from the goggles?
[297.38] Stephen: Because that was another thing that race people really hated
[300.38] Stephen: the fact that there was actually interference coming off the goggles
[303.38] Stephen: as well as the quad.
[305.38] Curry: That's interesting, I presume so, I presume it is
[308.38] Curry: but I'm not completely sure.
[310.38] Curry: I did want to know if this was accepted
[313.38] Curry: so I did have a quick chat with Cerberus about this one
[316.38] Curry: as a race director to see if he knew anything about it
[319.38] Curry: and he said, right now it's not, we don't allow walks now
[323.38] Curry: because it doesn't play nicely with others and it doesn't work on the race timing
[328.38] Curry: and I explained what this one does and he's like, oh, that's interesting
[331.38] Curry: it seems like they've done something
[333.38] Curry: it's like we'd try it out if someone brought it along
[336.38] Curry: but I think the point he made, which is quite a good one
[339.38] Curry: is what walks now should be doing, although they're having a go at it
[342.38] Curry: is perhaps talking to people that run the races
[345.38] Curry: and say, what do you need?
[347.38] Curry: and then develop it based around that
[350.38] Curry: so yeah, that was that one
[352.38] Curry: and then I flew
[355.38] Curry: I did this flight with this
[357.38] Curry: Rattel Pro camera
[359.38] Curry: which lasted a minute
[361.38] Curry: because I was like, I don't like this lens
[363.38] Curry: it was really narrow and then I couldn't take the lens out and swap it
[366.38] Curry: a really interesting video of me going, oh, come here
[370.38] Stephen: like this, but at least you didn't break it
[372.38] Stephen: because that was always a bit terrifying for those tiny little plastic parts
[375.38] Stephen: and those focus rings don't take a lot of effort to snap in half, do they?
[379.38] Curry: it was a bit annoying because as I was flying around
[381.38] Curry: I was like, this doesn't quite look focused
[383.38] Curry: so I wanted to have a go at it anyway
[385.38] Curry: and then I couldn't move it
[387.38] Curry: and I brought another lens with me because I tried it in the house
[390.38] Curry: and I'm like, this looks a bit narrow to me
[392.38] Curry: it's apparently 125 degrees
[395.38] Curry: and I think the lenses we generally use are like 150 to 165 degrees
[399.38] Curry: and it felt, it was really hard to describe it
[402.38] Curry: because when you look at the DVR it wasn't too bad
[404.38] Curry: but when you make just a little turn it seems like it's really twitchy
[409.38] Stephen: it's crazy because this isn't the first rattle that TEDx have made
[413.38] Stephen: like it's number, I think it's called a rattle two
[417.38] Stephen: there's been a way to...
[419.38] Curry: a baby rattle, a rattle two
[421.38] Curry: and this is like at least the third one
[423.38] Curry: and the previous ones...
[424.38] Curry: they've been making it for like four years at this point
[426.38] Curry: so I had the 1.8mm, 1.66mm lenses
[429.38] Curry: perfect, it was like my favourite camera
[431.38] Curry: and this one was just like, I can't use this, I can't fly with it

[436.38] Curry: and then we had the fun with the tricopter
[439.38] Curry: the 12-year-old tricopter which I decided to try an Acro
[443.38] Curry: and Steven has remorselessly taken the piss out of before
[447.38] Curry: he's like, what do you mean?
[449.38] Stephen: he's always going to try to do an Acro
[451.38] Stephen: and I'm like, right when?
[453.38] Stephen: and he just keeps climbing like that
[455.38] Stephen: they were quite high enough for Acro
[456.38] Stephen: and he must have got up to like 30 metres
[458.38] Stephen: before he was like, right now we can roll this
[460.38] Stephen: so, wow, okay
[462.38] Stephen: don't have a lot of faith in that
[464.38] Curry: I'm glad I had that much
[466.38] Curry: because I don't know what it was
[468.38] Curry: firstly, I think we showed the video the other week ago
[471.38] Curry: about me trying it in the garden on a standard tube
[474.38] Curry: which looked like...
[476.38] Curry: and then I basically set all the pits to practically zero
[480.38] Curry: and it was like, oh, this is okay
[482.38] Curry: so I was a little bit worried that it might be a bit sloppy
[485.38] Curry: and yeah, the yaw had this mind of its own
[489.38] Curry: so I tried to do an inverted yaw spin
[491.38] Curry: so I literally flipped it over
[493.38] Curry: and then did this with my yaw stick
[495.38] Curry: and it just sat there, I was slow down
[497.38] Curry: and just moved for an inch
[498.38] Curry: I was like, well, this is peculiar
[501.38] Curry: what's going on there?
[502.38] Stephen: it might be you're probably the only person
[504.38] Stephen: to have tried to do an inverted yaw spin on a tricopter
[508.38] Stephen: and beat a flight for like five years
[511.38] Curry: yeah, maybe
[512.38] Curry: I mean, it's not that tricopters can't do Acro
[516.38] Curry: it's just when you do it
[517.38] Curry: you'd make them a little bit more solid
[519.38] Curry: just this tricopter
[522.38] Curry: where is it?
[523.38] Curry: is it a wooden one?
[524.38] Curry: it's the wooden one with the massive arms
[527.38] Curry: and these are so loose
[528.38] Stephen: it easily looks all wooden arms as well

[535.38] Curry: and you just wobble it a bit

[539.38] Curry: but what happened is suddenly it was like
[542.38] Stephen: it's still in one piece after Acro and yet to be fair
[545.38] Curry: it basically turned into a helicopter blade
[548.38] Curry: whereas suddenly I'm looking through the goggles
[550.38] Curry: and all I can see is
[551.38] Curry: and this servo completely stripped
[554.38] Curry: and was upside down like that on the ground
[556.38] Curry: so I think basically it just got stuck at 90 degrees
[559.38] Curry: and was going like that
[560.38] Curry: so this thing was just like
[562.38] Curry: and it came down beautifully
[565.38] Curry: it was like a brilliant helicopter emergency landing
[568.38] Curry: where it just like went down like that
[570.38] Curry: but yeah, the only thing that's broken is the opposite
[572.38] Stephen: it's the opposite of a rotation

[651.38] Curry: within the bandwidth of that single channel

[655.38] Curry: I even tried flying at 25 milliwatts
[657.38] Curry: that was a struggle
[659.38] Curry: especially through the trees
[660.38] Curry: and like you said
[662.38] Curry: it presumably still transmits
[664.38] Curry: as well
[665.38] Curry: which is an interesting thing
[667.38] Curry: but I still
[669.38] Curry: I don't think
[670.38] Curry: people are really going to get behind it

[673.38] Curry: they've gone simple
[674.38] Stephen: Cadex seem to talk to people
[676.38] Stephen: it would be good if we had Andy RC on

[681.38] Stephen: cosy with Cadex at one point

[684.38] Stephen: really be in isolation to the community
[686.38] Stephen: maybe they talk a lot more to people in China

[695.38] Curry: it looked kind of better than analog

[701.38] Curry: like when there's no anti-aliasing

[705.38] Curry: look like they're all jagged and things
[706.38] Curry: it looked a bit like that
[707.38] Curry: so it wasn't particularly good to fly on

[711.38] Curry: I think if I flew analog
[712.38] Curry: I'd have probably a better picture here
[714.38] Curry: and I knew my latency
[716.38] Curry: would be exactly the same
[717.38] Curry: so I honestly
[719.38] Curry: I can't really see it catching on
[721.38] Curry: well it has caused that
[722.38] Stephen: most of our high refresh rate
[724.38] Stephen: you get there like 100 frames a second
[726.38] Stephen: which some race pilots say makes all the difference
[728.38] Stephen: and I guess if you're a really really great pilot
[730.38] Stephen: the fact that you have more frames
[732.38] Stephen: of image to tell where you are
[734.38] Stephen: when you're turning really really fast
[736.38] Stephen: that problem
[737.38] Curry: yeah but
[738.38] Curry: in that also lies the problem
[740.38] Curry: because
[741.38] Curry: one thing race directors want to do
[743.38] Curry: is put their footage
[745.38] Curry: up to stream or on a screen and stuff
[747.38] Curry: and it's very difficult to capture
[749.38] Curry: 100 frames per second
[751.38] Curry: from walks now
[753.38] Curry: because like
[754.38] Curry: capture devices just don't do it
[756.38] Curry: I had a terrible one
[758.38] Stephen: you have a broadcast mode
[760.38] Stephen: but it's really sketchy isn't it

[765.38] Stephen: you have to enter a special broadcast mode

[768.38] Stephen: pair with other people's goggles

[813.38] Frank: and walk snail is kind of the closest to that

[818.38] Frank: then that would kind of solve that problem

[846.38] Curry: you can use race mode in 500 milliwatts
[849.38] Curry: but you can put it down to 25 milliwatts

[1039.38] Frank: it's behaving perfectly normally
