[17.72] Frank: Sam Darma on with the show. [20.52] Stephen: Hello, and welcome to let's throw night drone. Let's throw night. Let's throw tonight. The scary version episode 479 for Thursday, October 2024. On tonight's scary episode, you are joined by a ghoulish and green Steven. [85.69] Stephen: And everyone's favorite curry kitten. So scary. Hello. He looks exactly the same as normal. And the scariest thing ever. An ESC you cannot upgrade. Jack Beale Helly 32.9. I'm not sure whether he's got the right connectors, but that's perhaps even scarier. [109.73] Stephen: Frank, our overlord and leader of this band of ghouls. And of course, the scariest thing out there. The drone safety advisor, Cole. [123.61] Koel: I'm gonna get you. I'm gonna get you. [127.33] Jack: I feel very overdressed. [129.93] Stephen: I'm wondering how long Jack will keep this on his head for audio viewers. Jack is wearing a giant cardboard ESC with tin foil pads. And a bunch of cables dangling from below his chin that preclude him from actually wearing earphones. So we're not entirely sure whether he can hear us, but it looks fantastic. [149.25] Jack: I done I done two less on the costume. And then my actual headphones. And then the other two. So that's number one, ESC one. And then my headphones are two, two and three. And then there's number four. And I'm where I've got power and ground this side. Yeah, I don't I don't have a back. [173.29] Koel: Spooky. [175.33] Koel: Be careful. [177.05] Jack: And I know that voltage I need to color in this, this fat. Hang on. Carry on. [187.45] Stephen: Jack is attempting to draw in his face and missing only slightly. [192.57] Koel: And it has to do it backwards to [195.25] Stephen: really [197.29] Stephen: I feel you are man. This is professionals. We've got this one down. [202.45] Jack: This art degree is doing overtime right now. [206.61] Curry: Art degree hasn't gone to waste and you're getting to use your talents. [209.97] Koel: Yeah. [211.65] Koel: I can I he literally made that in like, what, 10 minutes, not even. Yeah, shut up, Cole. Whose side are you on? [219.09] Stephen: No, I'm giving you about as long as it took to eat all those Kit Kats by the looks of it, then. [223.45] Jack: Yeah. I know. No, I only can't incorrectly on stream to annoy Curry. [232.61] Stephen: Because you care. [234.57] Koel: Well, we don't have who has candy, though. Who's got chocolate bars and whatnot for Halloween today? [239.49] Curry: Oh, I mean, you've been exceedingly busy. [244.49] Curry: On the looks of it. I got one day of flying in which I took three [250.69] Curry: open source FPV HD models and flew them all with varying degrees of success. [257.89] Curry: You even got them all off the ground. I hear [260.73] Curry: they all went off the ground and some of them returned to ground with rather bumpy. [264.93] Curry: But they all flew, which was amazing because [271.13] Curry: the open HD thing took me three attempts to fly [275.13] Curry: because of various problems. [277.09] Curry: And I figured out it took me about a month and a half to complete a video. [280.81] Curry: If people are saying, it doesn't get videos out very regularly. [284.17] Curry: It's because I'm at the field swearing and shouting at myself and saying, what? [288.21] Curry: Why don't you arm arm, damn it? [290.85] Stephen: And things like that. [292.17] Stephen: If only there was a second person filming you who gets some quality [295.13] Stephen: Curry behind the scenes of just screaming at phone, just screaming. [299.09] Jack: I volunteer, but Curry doesn't want to hang out with me. [304.61] Curry: You want them to come down? [307.01] Jack: Oh, he wants to stand at the field. [308.93] Jack: He has to stand on the road and shout. [310.97] Jack: Now, now we're live on a podcast. [313.73] Jack: He's like, yeah, sure, you can come around. [317.65] Curry: You're like, when are you coming over? [318.93] Curry: I'm like, well, I have to drive all the way to Brighton. [320.85] Curry: That's a long way. [322.21] Curry: That's a good thing. [324.17] Curry: That's so annoying. [325.73] Curry: Yeah. From from my endeavors, [329.05] Curry: I took the Oaken 2 board as my open HD ground station, [333.93] Curry: and I've decided that open HD has improved [337.61] Curry: in terms of I think when I last flew it and had reasonable good go, [343.09] Curry: it was still getting the odd, flashy, weird breakup and pixelation, [348.25] Curry: which seems to be better. [350.89] Curry: So I had two instances where I first launched [353.97] Curry: and then I'm flying it and suddenly it sort of all the screen pauses [358.01] Curry: for about a second or two. [359.49] Curry: And I'm like, oh, no, oh, no, oh, no. [361.73] Curry: But after those two goes in the first couple of minutes, [365.49] Curry: it was actually really nice. [366.53] Curry: And I didn't seem to have any of the instances where [369.69] Curry: like the frame got corrupted and there's like bits of color and stuff. [373.93] Curry: It was actually flying pretty nicely. [376.37] Curry: The only thing I would say, and it was quite noticeable, [379.29] Curry: is the frame rate seemed a bit jerky. [382.49] Curry: It's certainly not 60 frames a second. [384.25] Curry: I don't know if it's even 30, but it definitely seemed to. [387.81] Curry: Maybe it's because it was a bit inconsistent that you noticed it. [392.29] Curry: It didn't it didn't seem to flow as nicely. [394.13] Curry: So you got little bits where it's a little bit jerky. [397.89] Stephen: A lot of frame skips and drop frames, then. [400.81] Curry: No, no, according to the stats, [404.69] Curry: the ratio of lost packets was exceedingly low. [408.53] Curry: It's just it just keeps giving, Jack. [412.21] Koel: Oh, my God. [418.41] Koel: I think there's a ghost in the system, dude. [421.21] Koel: I think there's a ghost. [422.25] Stephen: You managed to do an impressively tiny install as well on one of them, right? [426.97] Curry: Yes. [429.33] Curry: So the two open HD quads, no, not open HD, open IPC quads, [434.65] Curry: the run cam one, which doesn't fit in very easily, is in there. [438.85] Curry: And you can see it's got a great big fan unit challenge and the two things. [443.25] Curry: And basically, it's just stuffed in there as it looks like an early Pentium. [447.33] Stephen: It looks like you've installed an early Pentium processor in the rear. [450.57] Curry: Early Pentium Pro with bits of wire coming out the outside. [454.05] Curry: And this took a long time to make it work because my stuff, [457.37] Curry: the wires back in between the boards, it decided to fail and say, [460.89] Curry: I don't like things in between me. [462.89] Curry: Don't do that. [463.97] Curry: And even the power lead, I have to sort of route around it [469.73] Curry: because I can't. [470.77] Curry: So that that is tricky. [472.01] Curry: But the results we got from that are really quite nice. [475.37] Curry: The the sharpness is really good. [477.25] Curry: But yeah, the little one, this is one of the EMAX [481.29] Curry: open IPC boards, which is whoops. [484.09] Curry: So you see, we've got our this is our all in one board at the bottom. [487.69] Curry: And then the EMAX open IPC board is this thing here. [491.93] Curry: And these are the two weird antennas with it. [494.25] Curry: This one, I haven't flown it for so long, but it's it's got a free sky XSR on it. [498.77] Curry: I had to dig out a multi-protocol module. [501.21] Curry: And when I got to the field, I found out my my channel order was wrong. [504.89] Curry: I had to suddenly change that. [507.13] Stephen: The only time we got about fifteen hundred DLRS modules [510.21] Stephen: lying around the room by now. [512.09] Curry: Yeah, but I couldn't I took so long to get that. [515.77] Curry: I was trying to get telemetry working on these. [518.01] Curry: The idea being is that you pass telemetry to open IPC. [521.49] Curry: Open IPC populates the OSD. [524.89] Curry: And I couldn't make that happen. [527.13] Curry: We know that the flight has a problem [530.57] Curry: putting out INAF telemetry on four, five. [535.17] Curry: And I tried other versions. [536.29] Curry: I still couldn't get it working. [537.53] Curry: I didn't know if it was INAF on beta flight or it's just being rubbish or what. [541.85] Curry: But basically, I'm flying these two quads with a completely blank OSD. [547.21] Curry: So it's like, I wonder how my battery is doing. [549.49] Curry: I don't know. Oh, do I have a timer? [551.61] Curry: No, I don't. I'll start counting in my head and that sort of thing. [555.37] Curry: The thing where I was going. [557.89] Stephen: So that the display port thing is just a dream right now. [561.93] Curry: It's not actually doing anything. [564.25] Curry: It's available, but I thought I fly a stock [568.09] Curry: and then I'll go ahead and I'll try and [572.57] Curry: upgrade it for the next video, essentially. [574.57] Curry: So I've still got to edit all these ones to do like the first thing [578.89] Curry: before I go on. And there's two things. [580.89] Curry: I happened to talk to Mario, Mario FPV, who does obviously a lot on open IPC. [586.05] Curry: And I said to him, oh, I thought the RunCam was like really sharp and stuff, [590.41] Curry: but the Emacs thing was a bit soft. [592.61] Curry: And he said, did you apply the what do you call it? [596.85] Curry: The latest calibration files? [599.77] Curry: And I'm like, no, what are they? [603.09] Curry: Because it's every time every time I talk to them and say, well, [606.81] Curry: this is a bit crap. He's like, oh, did you do this? [608.61] Curry: I was like, well, no, because no one told me about that. [610.85] Curry: And it's not written down anywhere. [613.13] Curry: Apparently, there's some files you can do. [615.65] Curry: And this will make the camera settings look better. [618.85] Curry: So that's another thing I have to do, along with the upgrade. [622.73] Curry: And he said the upgrade actually is much more friendly [626.45] Curry: because you can do it through this. [628.25] Curry: They've got this weird thing. [629.89] Curry: They're calling the open IPC configurator, which is a very basic [635.21] Curry: little GUI that runs on Windows and has behind the scenes. [638.49] Curry: It's just SSH and SSP, SCP files around. [642.85] Curry: And from this, you can apparently do the upgrade, which will do the MSP OSD. [648.01] Curry: But you have to be on the flight 451 to get that. [650.93] Curry: So that is something I'd be doing later on. [655.97] Curry: I can tell you vaguely what the. [660.41] Stephen: Well, that little one looks like. [662.29] Stephen: That looks like a shortcut to get people into open source [665.77] Stephen: VTX, digital VTX is right, because it's it's small enough. [669.45] Stephen: You can imagine it pretty well. [672.49] Curry: That looks. Yeah. [673.25] Curry: So this is the run cam. [675.65] Curry: And I have to say, this is much worse than it looks, [678.37] Curry: because this is the recording using a Wi-Fi adapter into a tablet. [682.57] Curry: And my tablet is crap. [683.93] Curry: So I didn't fly through that. [684.93] Curry: I flew using the MVR board, which I built. [688.41] Curry: And that was getting a like silky smooth 60 frames a second. [692.13] Curry: And I was flying this. [693.17] Curry: And I have to say, hey, I think it does grass better than walks now does. [697.65] Curry: There's no blurry bits. [699.53] Curry: And B, it really I had to really work hard to figure out [704.01] Curry: is is there latency here? [706.45] Curry: And what I would describe it to, you know, [708.21] Curry: if you've got a quad that's a little bit loose and so when you [711.21] Curry: when you do the sticks, it sort of goes, yeah, OK. [713.49] Curry: And it sort of it takes a little bit. [715.45] Curry: It doesn't feel quite locked in. [716.89] Curry: It felt a bit like that. [717.93] Curry: But you're flying to find the RSSR as well, weren't you? So. [722.29] Curry: On this one, no, this is. [724.45] Curry: Oh, this is the run cam. [726.65] Curry: Yeah, this is a converted R9 into ERS, this one. [731.29] Curry: But it's only running like 100 hertz. [732.85] Curry: It's no it's nothing big. [735.01] Curry: So the run cam, I really liked. [738.09] Curry: I was flying around all over the shop, [741.17] Curry: just, you know, doing anything I wanted. [744.17] Curry: And that was absolutely fine. [746.81] Koel: Well, what was that thing there for a sec? [749.25] Curry: What thing? [750.53] Curry: The only problem is by recording it on the. [755.09] Curry: On the tablet, the tablet went worse in places where it was OK. [759.69] Stephen: Because the tablet is just struggling in general. [762.49] Curry: Yeah, so it's taking like 54 milliseconds [766.21] Curry: just to decode the H.265 frame on a proper fast phone. [770.13] Curry: It would take about nine milliseconds, [772.45] Curry: which is like how how slow my tablet is. [775.05] Curry: So on top of that, I'm doing screen recording from that as well. [778.65] Curry: And that's why it was like really stupidly slow. [782.53] Curry: The the EMAX, let me get that up here. [785.21] Curry: See, we got it. Here we go. [787.45] Koel: I mean, the picture looks pretty great, man, it looks. [789.69] Koel: And that inverted Yasbin was great as well. [793.17] Koel: Yeah, it feels like you've got a confidence. [796.89] Curry: Yeah, after that was my second battery after the first battery, [799.37] Curry: I'm like, well, this is going really well. [800.69] Curry: I had a couple of on the first battery, half second. [804.65] Curry: It just froze a second. [805.97] Curry: Oh, we're OK. [807.29] Curry: But after that point, it was it was all right. [809.69] Curry: OK, I don't know why I'm getting this in the first like few seconds. [814.61] Curry: But I'll show you the EMAX and I'll see if you can see what I mean about the screen. [818.77] Curry: The screen just looked the focus didn't look right. [821.53] Curry: It just looks soft. [823.57] Curry: Yeah, it's just not very sharp. [826.21] Koel: And compared to the other one, [828.21] Koel: the other one looked like almost like crazy sharp compared. [831.77] Koel: This one looks more just like neutral or but it was a sharp. [836.37] Curry: But I definitely preferred the look of the other one over this. [839.01] Curry: But this is this is like a tiny little camera and sensor. [842.29] Curry: So maybe that's something to do with it. [844.17] Frank: But once again, kind of vignetting around the corner, [848.37] Curry: it is a bit racist, isn't it? [851.01] Curry: Yeah, although the props are black, [852.81] Curry: I don't quite know what's coming off that color. [854.49] Curry: Maybe it's it's the dullness of the lack of sun reflecting on the black. [859.13] Curry: Everything's a bit red, though, isn't it? [860.65] Curry: Like the hedgerows are practically purple. [864.05] Curry: Yeah, so let's see what happens when we apply this [867.73] Curry: this weird file they're talking about. [869.37] Curry: But the only problem with this, I know, is because this is this is quite low power. [873.05] Curry: The the VTX in this. [874.65] Curry: So I'm sat there by this bush. [877.53] Curry: And when I dived over the bush to go under the trees on the other side, [880.33] Curry: which I did on the run cam, it just like no frozen [883.89] Curry: completely, and it's like down it went. [887.05] Curry: And in fact, I later on the third battery, I was doing like this split S [892.61] Curry: and I just like I'll split over and I'll just come out of it. [895.69] Curry: And I just didn't have enough power. [897.85] Curry: And it could have been because again, I don't have an OSD, [901.53] Curry: which tells me the battery power. [902.85] Curry: So I probably sag the battery into this ridiculous amount. [906.21] Curry: It just didn't have enough to come out. [907.89] Curry: And after that, it was soaking wet and refused to turn on anymore [911.49] Curry: until I got home and it dried out. [913.13] Stephen: And that was going to be my question with the rough landings. [916.05] Stephen: Did you suffer any from rough landings on these? [918.05] Stephen: Because they both look quite experimental. [920.85] Stephen: Like I would imagine one, they're like alpha boards of prototypes. [925.25] Curry: That that field all the way from that gate where I'm going, [930.37] Curry: it was like this deep in water. [932.81] Curry: So when this went down, when basically down splat like that, it was completely soaked. [937.89] Curry: So the quad would power on. [939.33] Curry: But it's like we were getting nothing, nothing through the board. [942.77] Curry: So I thought, well, maybe the board's dead or maybe it'll be all right [946.29] Curry: when it dries out and it dried out and it was fine after that. [949.89] Curry: But the other one was fine. [950.85] Curry: I turned over one time, but it's it's a little bit more sort of sheltered. [955.53] Curry: It is it's not quite as small as the other quad. [960.01] Curry: So it sort of, you know, it managed to [963.97] Curry: not get quite as covered even when it flipped upside down and stuff. [969.01] Stephen: So what's the user of the overall experience? [971.69] Stephen: Do you feel it's kind of getting closer to what you'd expect from walks now? [975.09] Stephen: Or is it still like, you know, your stand stranded on a cliff face [978.65] Stephen: trying to crawl up it with a fork or something? [981.45] Curry: Well, I was certainly impressed with the picture quality of the run cam. [984.97] Curry: And I did I did a couple of distance tests. [987.77] Curry: So I went to the end of there's like a field I normally fly from. [991.01] Curry: And it's about 400 meters long. [993.37] Curry: And I was like 100 meters back. [995.57] Curry: So I got about 500 meters. [998.13] Curry: I didn't have any GPS or anything. [999.81] Curry: So I didn't like go further because I didn't fancy that much of a walk. [1003.33] Curry: And the picture stayed stable all the way through. [1007.01] Curry: I got to places where it sort of went a bit fuzzy in the edges and stuff [1012.61] Curry: when I was going like behind myself, because one of the problems is, [1016.65] Curry: of course, we don't have a Google module. [1018.21] Curry: If if I would start out with like a module on my head, it wouldn't be so bad. [1021.81] Curry: My module is literally sat on my bag, which is on the floor. [1024.77] Curry: So as soon as I go behind a bush, I'm putting like quite a heavy amount [1029.61] Curry: of stuff behind it. [1031.45] Curry: So when I was going back through under the trees there, it survived. [1036.17] Curry: But it went a bit worse. [1038.37] Curry: But yeah, I'm impressed with the flight experience. [1041.25] Curry: I didn't expect it to be quite as good on the lag. [1045.45] Curry: I don't know if people that are flying through a tablet. [1049.05] Curry: And of course, if you put a USB-C hub into a tablet and then you can take [1053.93] Curry: HDMI from there into your goggles, you can fly with it. [1057.05] Curry: But you're probably injecting much more latency than you want to. [1060.53] Curry: So I had like the best latency. [1063.05] Curry: I mean, you can get better with the Redaxa card. [1066.85] Curry: But mine was mine was felt really good. [1068.85] Curry: It felt quite similar to like flying walks now. [1071.49] Curry: So the next thing I really want to do is get get a proper OSD there [1076.33] Curry: so I actually know what's happening. [1077.97] Curry: So that had to be the next thing. [1079.25] Curry: As soon as I edit out this stuff, I've got two more videos to edit. [1082.81] Curry: I'll be going on and we'll be looking at how to apply these mystery files, [1087.85] Curry: what difference it makes, and then how to get the [1091.61] Curry: M.W. OSD stuff on there so we can actually make it useful. [1096.21] Stephen: It sounds like MavLink can give you some beautiful and very detailed OSD, [1100.33] Stephen: but at the same time, if, you know, if you want to just get in the air and fly, [1105.69] Stephen: it's probably useful having MSP display ports. [1108.29] Stephen: So it works just like everything else out there. [1111.21] Curry: Yeah, I mean, it would be great if [1115.09] Curry: if iNav just worked. [1116.57] Curry: I was contemplating putting like iNav on here. [1120.69] Curry: So MavLink would work, but I couldn't even find anything for this card. [1125.29] Curry: So I was like, I'll just [1128.49] Stephen: display the target problem where you have to jump through a few hoops [1131.69] Stephen: to get the iNav targets up and yeah. [1135.57] Curry: Yeah. So yeah, it looks promising. [1138.21] Curry: Certainly, I didn't expect it to be quite as good on the latency. [1143.53] Stephen: Do you think we're all going to be flying one of these systems like come [1147.81] Stephen: something next year? [1148.89] Stephen: Do you think we're heading towards that? [1150.25] Stephen: Or is it still like watch this space, give it a couple of years, [1153.69] Stephen: let them produce goggle modules and all that? [1156.73] Curry: They still need to produce a goggle module that will work. [1160.05] Curry: They still need a much more of a plug and play thing on the boards. [1164.41] Curry: Even the nicest way of doing a board, [1167.73] Curry: you would have to plug it into Ethernet, find out the IP address [1172.93] Curry: and go to this quite janky Windows thing to try and mess with the things. [1177.57] Curry: And then you couldn't simply change the channel. [1179.85] Curry: If someone else was there, you'd just like, hang on, let me just SSH to my camera [1183.81] Curry: and edit some files in Vi so I can change stuff. [1186.17] Curry: So right now, it's pretty easy to use them, is what you're saying. [1189.53] Stephen: Yeah, all the elements are ideal. [1193.05] Curry: Non non like computer people. [1195.97] Stephen: So you could use Puppet or Ansible maybe to change channel [1199.05] Stephen: in response to something else. [1200.45] Stephen: Just take a lot of Wi-Fi APs out to the field, network everything up. [1205.09] Stephen: Jobs are good. [1206.57] Curry: Or you could have something if the goggle module [1209.65] Curry: basically worked as a little client and just went, OK, [1213.69] Curry: go and change your channel to this. [1215.53] Curry: MSPVTX. I mean, it's all there, isn't it? [1218.89] Curry: Yeah. But the question is, you know, will it [1222.21] Curry: will it replace DJI or walks now? [1224.49] Curry: And there's like I was pretty impressed by the picture. [1226.77] Curry: But right now, I think your problem is that the [1231.57] Curry: buying like a walks now BTX isn't that expensive. [1236.45] Curry: And you've still got like the goggle experience. [1239.93] Curry: But at the same time, it's like, OK, if you want walks now, [1243.85] Curry: you have to buy some walks now goggles. [1245.17] Curry: If you want DJI, you have to buy DJI goggles. [1247.01] Curry: Why can't I just have a pair of goggles and everything work [1250.57] Curry: with just like a goggle module or something? [1252.21] Curry: Which which isn't at the moment. [1254.37] Stephen: And you can get walks now, but you'll never be able to get that with DJI. [1258.45] Frank: It's just not it is less dependent on China. [1265.05] Stephen: True, except for the parts. [1267.97] Koel: No. Yeah. [1270.69] Stephen: Once the manufacturing is up to speed, there might be quite a diversification. [1274.53] Stephen: That's kind of what happened with Express LRS. [1276.65] Stephen: There's, you know, stuff being made in India and all over the places now. [1280.37] Stephen: It's not just China. [1283.2] Stephen: But you've got to have that blueprint. [1284.6] Stephen: You've got to have that known good design. [1286.52] Stephen: Everyone's willing to invest in in terms of tooling and setting up [1289.64] Stephen: the production lines. [1290.88] Stephen: Otherwise, it's just prototyping. [1292.92] Stephen: And that's crazy expensive per unit product. [1296.56] Curry: Yeah, certainly. [1297.72] Curry: Enax have done a fantastic job on that little board [1301.68] Curry: because that is the first consumer friendly board [1305.76] Curry: in terms of size and fitting I've seen that the other one with the crazy [1311.68] Curry: 35 mil board, I was trying to fit in a quad. [1316.2] Curry: And it's not it's not even both boards. [1318.52] Curry: So the the camera board is 30 by five, but 30.5. [1323.28] Curry: And then the the Wi-Fi board is 35. [1326.04] Curry: So I tried to make an adapter in. [1329.92] Curry: Well, I did make an adapter and print it out. [1332.64] Curry: Yeah, it looks like this. [1334.28] Curry: Look how close the mounting holes are to each other. [1337.0] Curry: Oh, that's so good. [1339.2] Curry: So that's not going to work. [1341.24] Curry: So what I'm going to do is just build a little case for it [1346.6] Curry: and shove it on top of the frame because it's not [1349.4] Curry: it's not going to fit in the stack anywhere I can do it. [1355.19] Curry: Crazy. [1356.15] Stephen: I also prefer VHB is the best. [1359.51] Stephen: You know, if you're still in tape land, then it's not like the final product. [1362.87] Stephen: Right. If the answer to how do I install this is get some tape. [1368.02] Stephen: Yeah, it's fair. [1370.3] Stephen: Take works. [1372.98] Stephen: I mean, until it doesn't. [1374.98] Stephen: This we're speaking to the man who lost a battery halfway down the field [1379.54] Stephen: and, you know, had to carry on flying with the other one. [1385.54] Curry: Well, that that was on via a proper battery strap. [1388.74] Curry: It just decided it. [1390.66] Curry: It was on a quad designed to drop things and it wanted to drop. [1395.1] Stephen: It's a delivery system. [1396.5] Curry: Like, wait a minute. [1397.42] Curry: I've got three cores of a full battery here. [1399.86] Curry: Does someone want it? [1401.22] Curry: Off we go. [1403.99] Curry: That's the thing I've I never thought about strapping a beeper to the battery. [1407.59] Curry: Because that took me longer to find than I wanted to. [1411.43] Curry: At least the ground's nice and soft. [1414.43] Koel: It's funny we're talking about having to find things as I go on. [1419.75] Jack: Don't don't don't. [1422.67] Jack: I have all ready. [1425.79] Jack: I've got this lined up. [1427.39] Jack: Can I share the Google maps of where that is? [1432.11] Koel: So I mean, break down what went wrong. [1437.15] Koel: I mean, you couldn't if you zoom in enough and it doesn't like show too much, I guess. [1443.75] Stephen: Everything's going fine. [1445.19] Stephen: Weirdo in the cornfield. [1446.71] Stephen: Yeah, Cole standing in the middle of the cornfield. [1448.99] Stephen: He clearly wants to be there. [1450.23] Stephen: That's where he wants it to fly from. [1452.19] Koel: Literally. Yeah. [1454.83] Koel: Yeah. So it was a background call. [1457.23] Curry: What happened? [1459.35] Koel: Or Jack, do you want to do the do you want to do the honors? [1463.23] Koel: I was I was ground control. [1466.55] Koel: Yeah, Jack was my Jack was my ground control from, [1471.75] Koel: you know, he was my observer. [1476.35] Koel: Yeah, so well, the video is about to start, [1480.19] Koel: so I'll give you a little bit comment here. [1481.55] Koel: I was testing out a lithium ion pack on my five inch. [1484.91] Koel: And I take off and I'm already at storage voltage, which was, you know, concerning. [1493.27] Koel: Although I'm only drawing 10 amps. [1495.23] Koel: So like, you know, the Sony VTC six cells are rated to like 30 constant. [1501.35] Koel: So I'm like, I should be fine. [1502.71] Stephen: I think I seem to remember telling you about this before, [1504.55] Stephen: how I got masses of battery. [1505.79] Stephen: And you're like, oh, they're rated to 40 amps. [1509.59] Koel: Well, this is on this is on my five inch for us, though. [1512.63] Koel: Yeah, so the the seven inch with lithium ion is totally fine. [1516.59] Koel: But this was my first. [1518.15] Koel: This is literally my first flight test flight with the lithium ion. [1522.35] Stephen: You're cooking now. [1523.15] Stephen: You're going at decent speed. [1525.51] Koel: I mean, I'm going 50. [1528.59] Koel: And at one point I was going like 70 or 80, I think. [1531.19] Koel: But basically I go out and I've got I've got fine video. [1534.59] Koel: I've got my voltage is fine. [1537.59] Koel: It's a lithium ion. [1538.39] Koel: So I can definitely go like lower than a lipo. [1542.23] Koel: Um, so I'm going out. [1543.75] Koel: I'm going out just just to where I feel like, OK, maybe I should turn around now. [1548.27] Koel: And then so I do this little turnaround thing. [1551.39] Koel: And here's the thing. [1552.27] Koel: My antenna on my freestyle quad is not very tall. [1555.35] Koel: So it's not, you know, way up above. [1557.59] Koel: And the lithium ion pack is a little battery. [1560.83] Koel: It's not that big, to be honest. [1562.19] Koel: It's just just a picture for lithium ion cells in a way. [1567.99] Koel: So so I turn around all as well. [1570.59] Koel: Jack, pause it, pause it, Jack, pause it, pause it. [1572.91] Koel: OK, so I turn around, but I'm only [1579.03] Koel: oh, one point one five or less round trip. [1583.19] Koel: I was only maximum like I wasn't even that far away from myself. [1586.75] Koel: I was only maybe like, you know, a few hundred meters away. [1591.35] Koel: And so I do the turnaround and I lose a little signal that I'm fine. [1594.91] Koel: But pause it again for me, Jack. [1596.95] Koel: So I'm kind of a dummy. [1598.47] Koel: Wait, you're ruining it. [1600.47] Koel: You're ruining it. [1601.31] Koel: Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back. [1604.47] Koel: OK, so don't play yet. [1606.31] Koel: Don't play yet. So. [1611.07] Koel: The way that I went out was was basically [1614.07] Koel: on the right edge of that field there. [1616.83] Koel: And when I did that turnaround and I started getting break up, I'm like, oh, crap. [1620.59] Koel: OK, I'm turning around. I'm going home. [1622.15] Koel: Well, the home arrow is like a millisecond or sorry, you know, [1625.31] Koel: a few milliseconds like delayed. [1627.19] Koel: So I turn around and I'm going, you know, to the left [1631.19] Koel: because that's kind of where I was saying home is. [1634.03] Koel: Well, now when Jack presses play. [1638.67] Koel: I start losing video, but I'm still going to the left, [1642.27] Koel: but I'm actually a lot more to the right based on the home arrow. [1645.55] Koel: Well, I completely lose video. [1649.07] Koel: I have no video right now. [1650.35] Koel: I'm manning the drone, thinking, OK, if I go up a little higher [1653.31] Koel: or if I fly a little more, I'll get video back. [1655.19] Koel: I'm like, OK, no, I'm going to let it down gently. [1658.27] Koel: And I do a little crash crash. [1660.43] Koel: And then I ricochet into the cornfield. [1664.59] Koel: Oh, perfect. Yeah. [1666.15] Koel: For a blind for a blind landing. [1668.07] Koel: Not bad. Could have been worse. [1669.43] Stephen: I like the fact that you haven't disarmed because you're like, no way [1671.75] Stephen: I can rescue this. [1673.19] Stephen: And I like the fact you're calling it a landing. [1677.67] Koel: I mean, we'll put it this way. [1678.87] Koel: I didn't just disarm midair. [1681.11] Koel: I was like gently letting the throttle down. [1685.27] Koel: Waiting a little bit. [1686.67] Koel: OK, I don't have video back. [1687.95] Koel: OK, now I'm going to disarm. [1689.99] Jack: He keeps turning on his turtle rather than his buzzer. [1694.07] Koel: Well, the turtle mode. [1695.59] Koel: Turtle mode was way louder and way more consistent. [1699.03] Jack: I was like, I mean, it was it was in there. [1702.67] Jack: He walked straight past it as well. [1704.43] Koel: Yeah, I literally stopped right beside it. [1706.75] Koel: Like I hear it. [1707.83] Koel: I swear I hear my drone. [1710.07] Koel: And then I turn around. [1712.67] Koel: I'm like, oh, here it is. [1713.95] Koel: Turtle mode still on. [1715.07] Koel: And I actually bumped like one of like the sticks when I was picking it up. [1719.59] Koel: And I was like, oh, why did it go zoom? [1721.03] Koel: I was like, oh, oops. [1724.47] Koel: But it was a really good thing. [1726.07] Koel: I had my GPS hooked up. [1727.43] Koel: Like basically, I was like, I'm testing lithium ion. [1729.83] Koel: I'm putting the GPS on this drive. [1731.79] Koel: So I found it in like 15, 20 minutes. [1734.91] Koel: Jack helped me with the GPS coordinates and the oldest happily ever after. [1739.99] Koel: And that was my nightmare Halloween story. [1742.47] Curry: I have two questions. [1744.43] Curry: Yeah, if you had GPS on it, why didn't you hit rescue mode? [1748.15] Curry: Number one, number two, you said, oh, maybe if I raised it higher, [1753.63] Curry: I'd get my signal back. [1755.07] Curry: But you did the opposite. [1756.71] Koel: So I tried a little bit. [1760.03] Koel: But the thing is, I had no video. [1762.31] Koel: So I'm like, I can't punch this lithium ion because I'm just going to burn it [1766.99] Koel: all to hell. [1768.95] Jack: So I get I'm going to take a photo. [1771.31] Jack: Sorry to cut you off, but I'm going to take a photo of what my screen looks like. [1775.99] Jack: And then can you text me some feedback, whether that's OK? [1779.51] Koel: OK, yeah, yeah, yeah. [1781.51] Koel: Yeah. [1783.19] Koel: So here's the thing. [1785.03] Koel: So yeah, that was the whole thing. [1786.75] Koel: So I didn't want to punch like too hard without video, without knowing [1789.99] Koel: my amp draw with a lithium ion pack. [1793.11] Koel: So like I like just kind of held it. [1795.71] Koel: And I thought I was going up, but maybe I wasn't. [1798.79] Koel: And then and then after a certain point, I was like, OK, no. [1801.39] Koel: Can't see anything. [1802.27] Koel: I am setting it down. [1804.51] Koel: And then the other thing, return to home. [1808.19] Koel: So very good question, Curry. [1810.83] Koel: So I I set up my GPS. [1816.27] Koel: I use my lithium ion, but I did not set up return to home. [1821.23] Curry: Ah, yes. [1822.59] Koel: I haven't set it up yet. [1824.59] Jack: I've given everyone free pass to treat him as how as if I had done that. [1830.43] Koel: Yeah, Jack, that's totally fine, dude. [1832.03] Koel: That's perfect. [1833.19] Jack: I think I cut out the bit you didn't like. [1835.91] Koel: Yeah, yeah. No, that's good. [1837.47] Koel: Basically, all it was was like. [1840.31] Koel: I'm I'm I was like testing the lithium ion pack and, you know. [1846.39] Koel: Yeah, I just I thought, well, you could zoom in a little more maybe. [1851.59] Koel: But yeah, there you go. [1852.71] Koel: Can we win? [1853.67] Koel: No, that's good. That's good. [1855.87] Koel: But yeah, basically. [1857.95] Koel: Oh, yeah, there you go. [1861.7] Jack: What is it? Measure distance. [1864.18] Jack: At the very bottom. [1865.42] Jack: OK, sorry. Having a. [1869.26] Stephen: But were you under the impression that the power of nature would amplify [1872.14] Stephen: your video signal if you headed towards the cornfields instead of going up? [1875.94] Stephen: I'm just trying to know this for you. [1878.3] Koel: No, you're way past it, dude, that first green patch is the cornfield. [1882.9] Koel: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. [1884.26] Koel: So can I zoom? [1885.54] Koel: Can I? Yeah, it's fine. [1887.22] Koel: It's fine, man. It's fine. [1890.46] Koel: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. [1892.54] Koel: All right, cool. [1894.34] Koel: So the way that I took off, [1897.02] Koel: there's a lot of trees that are right beside me [1900.62] Koel: on these houses and stuff, and they're really, really big trees. [1903.74] Koel: So when I went out initially, I went out straight [1907.3] Koel: and I had perfectly fine video, but that [1911.34] Koel: that cornfield thing kind of screwed me up. [1913.38] Koel: And then I went too far to the left and I just didn't have signal anymore [1918.3] Koel: because there was like, I don't know, 20, 30 foot trees. [1922.66] Koel: Like, oh, yeah, you'll see. Yeah, exactly. [1924.82] Koel: It's these go back to the very beginning of the video. [1928.38] Koel: Go back to the very start of my video. [1929.82] Koel: You'll see the trees we're talking about. [1932.9] Koel: Oh, yeah. Oh, no. [1935.06] Jack: I've missed. It's fine. It's fine. It's fine. [1937.3] Jack: Clear measurement. Sorry. [1939.38] Koel: Yeah. So go back to the beginning, but not the beginning, beginning. [1945.06] Koel: So, yeah, so you see, I take off. [1946.7] Koel: Look at these big ass trees that are there. [1949.66] Koel: And I wasn't flying that high up. That's the thing. [1954.06] Koel: So those big trees, [1956.82] Koel: then there's another whole row of big trees over there on the right. [1959.62] Koel: They're all completely blocking my signal. [1962.3] Koel: So the moment I go too far to the right. [1965.46] Koel: Well, I'm screwed. [1967.06] Koel: And that's where the cornfield was, was to the right. [1970.1] Koel: You'll see it as I go up. [1973.66] Koel: So I'm just going straight. [1974.7] Koel: So my signal is fine. [1976.46] Koel: Cornfield is to the right. [1978.66] Jack: Yeah. So. [1983.71] Koel: I don't miss the distance from there and then straight out. [1986.83] Koel: If you go straight out from it, [1989.23] Koel: you just got to click one other time, dude. [1990.67] Koel: You've got to click one more time. [1992.47] Jack: Yeah. That cool. Yeah. [1997.86] Jack: And then as soon as you got here, the tree, no, I wasn't that far over. [2002.54] Koel: I wasn't even that far over here. [2005.66] Koel: Yeah, something like that. Somewhere around there. [2007.3] Koel: Yeah, the trees were in the Y. [2010.38] Koel: Yeah. [2012.3] Koel: Which is really strange, though. [2013.78] Jack: Like, does that seem odd? [2016.94] Jack: And you you found your cord here somewhere. [2020.02] Stephen: I don't know that I find it odd that you're like, wait, [2023.34] Stephen: I wonder how this lithium performs. [2025.3] Stephen: Let me just like hone this out over here where I've never found before. [2028.94] Jack: I see why. That's what I said. [2031.18] Stephen: I've flown there before. [2032.38] Koel: I've flown there plenty. [2033.42] Stephen: Well, just not to the right where you were going [2035.5] Stephen: and you put it on a bunch of trees and went over a cornfield, [2039.42] Stephen: which is possibly the worst place to crash. [2042.74] Stephen: And it's not getting it back. [2045.18] Stephen: I mean, it's not your abilities because you've got it back. [2048.38] Stephen: But like, why? Yeah. [2050.46] Koel: I mean, I found it like 15 minutes. [2052.62] Koel: I did find it in like 15 minutes. [2054.9] Jack: No, that's bullshit, because it took us half an hour [2057.7] Jack: to work out how GPS coordinates work and how to do it. [2062.3] Koel: No, the whole GoPro recording from that flight was only 20 minutes. [2066.06] Jack: OK. Yeah. [2067.94] Koel: Oh, you've got it back. [2069.66] Stephen: It's a very high risk way. [2071.58] Stephen: But you could literally have kind of taken off, [2074.46] Stephen: stood in the middle of a parking lot and flown around yourself [2077.14] Stephen: for like 15 minutes to see how the battery performed. [2079.54] Stephen: And it's like, yeah, yeah, like 10 out of 10. [2082.66] Stephen: But for absolute brass balls on you. [2086.38] Stephen: But like, well, I mean, initiative. [2089.22] Koel: It's not I didn't even go a kilometer out. [2091.1] Koel: I mean, like it was a full battery. [2092.86] Koel: I'm like, I should be able to fly around. [2094.3] Koel: And I initially thought it was battery related. [2096.7] Koel: But then I realized I'm just a dumbass for flying out of line of sight. [2100.5] Stephen: So, yeah, it worked there, right? [2104.14] Stephen: So you want to something just about. [2106.54] Koel: Yeah. Well, I and I ended up actually flying that same lithium ion pack [2110.06] Koel: at the same place yesterday, [2112.06] Koel: just in the soccer field, though, right in front of me. And [2116.1] Koel: and basically I got almost nine minutes of flight time. [2121.66] Koel: And but I probably could have gone a little longer. [2124.62] Koel: But I mean, I don't think a five inch for us build is really meant [2129.02] Koel: for lithium ion. It's just like you can cruise with it. [2132.46] Koel: But I'm only going to get a couple more minutes compared to like a lifeboat. [2137.54] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, [2140.66] Frank: downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only sensors [2144.78] Frank: to please the iTunes people hosted on the Internet, [2147.1] Frank: forwarded through to your podcast provider, [2148.94] Frank: downloaded, playing on your device and is now playing in your ears. [2158.22] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out. [2163.26] Curry: Have you ever tried actually? [2165.38] Curry: It's so boring. [2166.38] Curry: I've done it before for reviews on a quad that seemed quite efficient [2170.14] Curry: where I've got like 10 minutes from a 13 hundred regular four cell lipo [2175.62] Curry: by just cruising round and round the field in circles. [2179.7] Curry: But I'm like on like 20 percent for all the way around. [2183.7] Curry: And if you're very careful and you manage it, you can go a long time. [2188.06] Curry: Have you ever tried that? [2188.94] Curry: Just on a regular battery is so surprised how long we fly for. [2193.02] Koel: Well, when I traveled recently, I was flying [2196.82] Koel: my four S five inch quad like that. [2199.58] Koel: Actually, I was getting I mean, [2203.5] Koel: I wasn't doing it quite as gentle and I was kind of flying it out. [2206.94] Koel: You know, I was actually sending it out a bit. [2209.38] Koel: I was getting like six, seven minute flight times, but like not [2213.22] Koel: not being that conservative with it. [2215.26] Koel: So like not being as conservative as just being, you know, very gentle [2219.82] Koel: and flying around myself. [2221.58] Koel: But I bet you I probably could get 10 minutes on a new battery [2226.78] Koel: if I was to actually, you know, sort of be gentle, because that's the thing. [2230.22] Koel: Like the reason why I'm kind of testing this stuff out is because I'm like, [2233.62] Koel: I can't always bring a seven inch with me. [2236.38] Koel: Like how much flight time can I get out of a five inch? [2239.5] Koel: I can hook up a GPS, no problem. [2243.46] Koel: But again, it's like tool for the job. [2246.54] Koel: Five inches, a four S five inch is like very powerful. [2250.18] Koel: And it it really draws a lot of current. [2253.86] Stephen: So the maximum flight time would be the point when you're actually seeing [2258.78] Stephen: like the quad was unable to lift the lipo. [2261.82] Stephen: So it feels like you could almost you almost under lipoed it. [2264.98] Stephen: Like you could put a much heavier lipo on, [2267.18] Stephen: get past the point of having sag and get to the point where it's actually [2270.38] Stephen: struggling to lift the weight of the lipo. [2272.5] Stephen: And that would probably give you like maximum flight time. [2275.54] Stephen: It handled like a dog because you'd be carrying like a buck. [2278.42] Curry: Yeah. But but where is that point where the extra weight [2285.18] Curry: has a detrimental effect on the flight time versus going slightly [2290.1] Curry: lighter and getting almost the same as this weird little sort of curve that goes. [2294.54] Curry: Yeah, like that. [2296.26] Stephen: He was still on the the left of that curve where he could [2300.74] Stephen: have gone bigger on the battery because he was getting a lot of sag on the [2303.86] Stephen: battery and wasn't getting a massive increase in flight time. [2308.38] Koel: I would say here. [2311.22] Koel: So I'll show you just for context here. [2313.7] Koel: This is my normal battery that I use for my [2319.54] Koel: for my freestyle stuff or for my five inch or whatever. [2322.5] Koel: And this is the lithium ion that I was using. [2328.46] Koel: So they're pretty much the same size. [2331.38] Koel: Lithium ion is just like slightly like they're basically the same. [2335.62] Koel: If you look at it, it could definitely go big. [2337.18] Curry: Also, you should get at least twice as much flight time, even on the million. [2340.66] Stephen: That's a thirteen hundred four s and you're flying five inch off. [2344.26] Stephen: So people fly eighteen hundred six s. [2347.82] Koel: Yeah. Yeah. [2349.22] Stephen: But perspective, which would be equivalent to like two and a half amp hour for us. [2354.18] Stephen: Like racers are running eighteen hundred packs now. [2357.34] Stephen: So I mean, you could definitely go a lot bigger. [2359.98] Koel: I mean, this is a 3000 milliamp hour. [2362.14] Koel: I mean, I could pull up the DVR and we could see if you want the weight [2366.46] Stephen: that your core can carry, right? [2367.94] Stephen: So like, what can it what can get away with carrying? [2370.18] Stephen: Maybe you can carry a six thousand. [2372.06] Stephen: Like you put two of those in parallel almost. [2374.7] Koel: Not on a five inch, though. [2375.94] Koel: There's no room for it. [2377.3] Koel: Oh, well, that's the second one. [2378.86] Stephen: One underneath or one on top of each other. [2382.26] Stephen: Just like double stacked here. [2384.66] Stephen: Let me let me strap Battery A on Battery B and strap Battery B onto the frame. [2389.7] Stephen: Make sure they're secured and you don't accidentally run into the cornfield. [2394.9] Curry: Yeah, make sure you don't hit a cow. [2397.22] Koel: I'll grab my my DVR and we can take a look. [2399.26] Koel: I mean, it's [2401.86] Koel: it's kind of weird because I honestly thought I would be able to get [2405.86] Koel: at least 10 ish minutes out of it. [2408.86] Koel: Um, but [2413.06] Koel: I don't know, I didn't. [2414.02] Koel: I put a look at mine and you can run them lower, right? [2417.26] Koel: So [2419.38] Koel: but I wasn't really comfortable dropping them down like too far [2423.74] Stephen: just because of what, like two, eight, two, five, something like that. [2427.94] Stephen: Two, five. Yeah, it always gets like three volts as your safety. [2432.46] Koel: That's what I did. [2433.18] Koel: Actually, I did. [2433.94] Koel: I went to like three volts and that was [2436.5] Koel: let's see. [2438.26] Koel: Is this it? Let me see. [2440.78] Koel: Six minute flight time. [2442.18] Koel: No, it's got to be the eight minute flight time. [2444.1] Koel: Well, it's got to be this one. [2444.94] Koel: Here we go. All right. [2446.46] Koel: So if you guys want to see the DVR, I can show you do it. [2451.74] Koel: Do it now. [2453.62] Koel: I mean, it's kind of long, but it's like I take off [2456.1] Koel: and I'm immediately at like 15 point whatever. [2461.18] Koel: I'm going to add storage voltage as soon as I take off, which [2464.74] Koel: it will it will hold that storage voltage for a while. [2469.54] Koel: But I didn't actually put my throttle on this [2474.64] Koel: on my OSD for this one because I didn't actually I took the GPS off. [2478.68] Koel: But [2480.88] Koel: I mean, it was OK, I will say it was insanely windy [2484.12] Koel: as well when I was flying at this at this point of the day. [2488.76] Koel: But I mean, [2491.36] Koel: you know, I'm just flying around, nothing, nothing crazy. [2494.6] Koel: Just basically just doing laps. [2497.68] Koel: And [2499.64] Koel: it lasts quite a while. [2501.64] Koel: Some birds decided to go by, so I decided to look at them. [2507.0] Koel: I see now I'm getting to like 14 volts with the forest. It's like [2511.28] Koel: it's weird because in the end, let's see, [2514.12] Koel: I went to like it says voltage level 13.6. [2518.04] Koel: I've only ran like 1500 milliamp hours out of it. [2521.24] Koel: And I don't know. [2526.5] Koel: I don't know if you guys have any thoughts or [2529.34] Koel: what you think is. [2530.06] Koel: So I ran 1500 million hours. [2532.14] Koel: I'm at now 13 volts. [2533.78] Koel: So you divide that by four. And I mean, like [2537.26] Koel: I don't know, it's [2540.22] Koel: just strange. [2541.02] Koel: I'm getting up to the 2000 million hour mark. [2543.74] Koel: So I probably could have gotten at least a few more minutes out of it. [2550.02] Stephen: It helps if you have a cell voltage, to be honest. [2554.06] Stephen: This type of stuff, especially if you're not used to flying. [2557.26] Stephen: You don't. Well, then I land and I'm at 14. [2559.38] Stephen: So like you could have flown a lipo down to that voltage. [2563.46] Koel: Oh, yeah, totally. Yeah. [2565.58] Koel: You could definitely go further. [2567.3] Curry: I mean, so the thing with this 12 and still been at three volts per cell. [2572.98] Koel: Oh, so I actually was I was at like three point five then or something like that. [2576.3] Koel: Or three point whatever. [2577.5] Stephen: That's why I'm saying you should have like per cell voltage. [2579.86] Stephen: It's just quite the average voltage. [2581.9] Stephen: I mean, you know what it guesstimates when you plug in, [2583.98] Stephen: it will guess how many cells you've got and then show them. [2587.1] Koel: That's not too bad, though, actually. [2588.34] Koel: So about eight and a bit minutes. [2590.78] Koel: So then if I were to run it to what you guys are saying, [2593.14] Koel: I could definitely get about 10 minutes at least. [2597.34] Koel: But that's just flying around like, you know, just flying around [2602.02] Koel: like like just getting cruising type shots, which you know what? [2605.18] Koel: I actually don't mind flying like this. [2606.7] Koel: I mean, I like my freestyling. [2608.38] Koel: I like my other kind of stuff. [2610.26] Koel: But sometimes it's nice to just go out and just cruise a bit. [2614.58] Curry: Well, that translate into sort of a basic long range out and back. [2619.46] Curry: If you're doing the sort of thing, gentle flight, gentle cruisey thing to do that. [2625.62] Curry: But not so much if you like, I'm going to like maybe go up this mountain [2629.7] Curry: and like keep our looping this hole in it and stuff. [2633.58] Koel: Yeah, yeah, that's the thing is like [2638.38] Koel: like with four S and the high KV motors, right? [2641.94] Koel: Like it's not efficient whatsoever, right? [2645.34] Koel: Like it's not it's not built to be efficient. [2649.14] Koel: Twenty four hundred. [2651.86] Koel: So like it's not this kind of quad isn't really meant for, you know, [2657.34] Koel: you're flying. [2657.86] Stephen: I think you're used to flying like quite small batteries [2661.02] Stephen: and quite low KV motors, to be honest. [2663.02] Stephen: Like people are putting like 2700 to 2800 KV on four S builds. [2668.5] Stephen: They're flying six S on like 2000 KV. [2671.26] Stephen: So 50 percent more for us. [2673.3] Stephen: Right. [2673.58] Koel: So we're looking at just showing 2700 million power packs on a four S. [2679.66] Stephen: Well, I'm just talking about like race builds on five inch. [2682.54] Stephen: You're looking at flying 2000 KV motors. [2685.82] Stephen: I've got like 1900 KV on on six S. [2688.54] Stephen: So I think you're already flying like quite super light, efficient quad. [2693.58] Stephen: And you could definitely put a lot more battery on than you're [2697.62] Stephen: carrying at the moment. [2698.78] Stephen: And with a light, is this considered a fishing quad? [2703.26] Stephen: Yeah, it's like 1354 S is that's a really small pack. [2708.38] Stephen: Like people fly bigger success packs, that more million powers, [2712.42] Stephen: but with 50 percent more cells. [2714.7] Jack: I fly 11 on six. [2718.1] Jack: 1100. Hmm. [2720.94] Koel: Yeah. Yeah. [2721.94] Koel: I see. [2722.46] Koel: I was under the impression that that like for us, [2726.02] Koel: 2400 KV five inch build is not like an efficient type of setup. [2730.34] Koel: That's what I was. [2730.86] Stephen: It's a lightweight build. [2732.14] Stephen: Definitely lightweight. [2733.18] Stephen: And you've gone for like a lower KV. [2735.54] Koel: I'm also rocking a GoPro, though. [2738.06] Koel: And it's it's not is that considered a low KV for for us? [2742.78] Koel: Twenty four hundred four hundred. [2745.62] Stephen: Oh, maybe it wasn't a while ago, but I've got like 2750 KV motors. [2750.74] Stephen: I'll tell you that now for four. [2752.98] Koel: Well, yeah, and you're right. [2753.9] Koel: I am flying like old school type build. [2755.94] Curry: Yeah, I just think back in the day when I first built my original quad on 3S, [2764.06] Curry: it got took off at like 50 percent light, but 50 percent for all on like a 3S. [2770.62] Curry: And these days, when I think I'm really overloading this after this GoPro [2775.58] Curry: and this massive battery on and it's still like hollows at 30 percent. [2778.82] Curry: It's like, actually, you can shove more on there and it's not going to have [2782.02] Curry: that much of a detrimental effect. [2784.02] Curry: You should try shoving some more batteries on that to what happens. [2786.66] Stephen: Yeah, just so you know how much battery you can put on before you [2790.18] Stephen: actually struggle to carry the battery and the motors come down hot. [2793.82] Stephen: And that's the point where you know you've gone a bit too far. [2796.5] Stephen: But until then, you're like, yeah, I want more batteries. [2799.5] Koel: Because you want to know the crazy thing is this battery, [2802.9] Koel: other than say, like another little like 1100 GMB that I have. [2807.82] Koel: These are the only batteries I've ever flown on my five inch. [2812.74] Koel: Ever, ever, ever, ever. [2814.82] Koel: I mean, other than trying out this one and then, yeah, like I've literally [2820.1] Koel: I mean, my buddy lent me like a 1551 before, but yeah, [2824.02] Koel: I've only ever flown 1350 packs on this quad and this type of quad. [2830.26] Curry: Experiment. It must be pretty efficient, then, [2832.54] Curry: because what I'm finding with modern quads is like a 1300 4S won't handle it. [2837.66] Curry: You need at least 15 or preferably 1800 [2840.94] Curry: before so you don't get as much sag. [2843.86] Koel: Hmm. Interesting. [2845.9] Koel: Now I have to try it out because that was the other thing I was looking at was [2850.14] Koel: I was looking at some bigger lipos like there's [2853.46] Koel: yeah, like some 1550s or like 1800 milliamp hour. [2856.3] Koel: And they are they do look quite a bit chunkier. [2860.22] Koel: But I mean, I'm going to get more lifetime out of it. [2862.38] Koel: It's not a tiny frame, is it? [2864.38] Koel: Not Apex. [2866.82] Koel: What's up, Bob? [2868.1] Jack: I was going to say you could definitely get a [2871.3] Jack: 4S 3000 on the underneath of it. [2876.62] Koel: 4S 3000 LAPO. Hmm. [2881.5] Jack: Hmm. Do you want me to go get it? [2883.58] Jack: It's over there. [2885.14] Koel: I mean, if you have a rummage. [2887.1] Koel: Yeah. [2887.62] Koel: So you will look like you have a you have an apex. [2891.1] Koel: I'm talking about yourselves. [2894.3] Koel: Blab, blab, blab, blab, blab, blab. [2895.14] Koel: Yeah, Robert's saying that double my value. [2898.94] Koel: Interesting. [2901.14] Koel: Yeah, this is why it's great to have everybody to talk to, [2903.5] Koel: because, like, you know, this is all I've ever known. [2906.22] Koel: So I'm like, apparently I'm living in the friggin dark here. [2910.22] Stephen: I was a small boy from a poor family, [2913.5] Stephen: and we could only afford what little lipos [2917.26] Curry: new props away, more efficient and two bladed props [2919.54] Curry: are more efficient than three bladed props. [2921.94] Koel: Yeah, true. Yeah, yeah. [2925.54] Koel: He's saying, I guess I'll have to double it. [2929.34] Koel: The only thing is with with my five inch build [2932.06] Koel: is that I also do freestyle them. [2934.86] Koel: So like. It's. [2937.54] Stephen: Yeah, either flying long range or you're flying freestyle, [2940.54] Stephen: so you either have a battery for a long range or a battery for freestyle. [2943.54] Stephen: You. Yeah, you've got to think like if you're flying freestyle, [2946.94] Stephen: you want to be able to like take off and accelerate vertically like a rocket. [2951.78] Stephen: And you find the long range. [2952.98] Stephen: You just don't need to be able to do that. [2954.38] Stephen: So you can carry a lot more weight and you don't need that vertical acceleration. [2959.06] Curry: There's very few situations where you would fly two kilometers out, [2962.46] Curry: find the bando and then start freestyle. [2965.46] Curry: You just travel to the bando and then do it there. [2967.86] Curry: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [2969.7] Koel: Yeah, no, that's right. [2971.5] Koel: You also have to pick and choose your fights. [2972.94] Koel: You're either going to fly. [2973.9] Koel: Oh, yeah, exactly. [2974.82] Koel: That's what you guys said. [2975.62] Koel: You're going to fly long range or you're going to fly freestyle. [2977.66] Koel: I guess like for me, if I'm going to fly long range, though, like [2981.54] Koel: it's going to probably be with us an inch for real. [2984.3] Stephen: So I just buy another one of those batteries and get a parallel cable [2988.38] Stephen: that can join those two packs together and give you a single X-T60 [2992.18] Stephen: and just give it a go, man. [2993.46] Stephen: The worst is that we're talking about two of these. [2996.58] Stephen: Yeah, buy another one of those and you can get parallel cable [3000.06] Stephen: that lets you join two packs together. [3002.06] Stephen: They only cost like three or four bucks. [3004.7] Stephen: And that's yeah, I can probably even make one. [3007.66] Stephen: Yeah, yeah. [3008.82] Stephen: I mean, I have made them as well. [3011.3] Stephen: You can buy them pre-made if you're lazy, like just eBay them. [3014.9] Koel: Huh? Yeah, I mean, [3018.7] Koel: and then what, just one on top, one on the bottom, I guess, or? [3020.98] Stephen: Yeah, give it a go. [3023.98] Stephen: That's the easiest way to get the straps round. [3025.58] Stephen: I want to sit very carefully when you take off. [3028.9] Koel: Yeah, because that's actually the one thing, too, like with my [3031.7] Koel: with my seven inch, like most people that are using the frame [3034.94] Koel: that I have the Radlion frame, they're using lithium ion top lithium ion [3038.54] Koel: the bottom, but I've only ever ran one at a time. [3041.74] Koel: But yeah, I got to experiment some more. [3044.7] Koel: You got to get out of my time to join the pulpy. [3047.14] Stephen: It's not you're not just getting a DJI drone and having the same [3050.3] Stephen: full experience that everyone else has. [3051.86] Stephen: It's like, you know, just mess around with it. [3053.74] Stephen: Try things, make your own. [3055.58] Koel: Totally. [3057.86] Koel: Where's Jack gone to? [3058.98] Koel: Is he back? [3060.66] Stephen: I think he's super spooky. [3062.22] Curry: I forgot what he's trying to demonstrate, but [3064.9] Koel: I think it's something about. [3067.9] Stephen: He's probably connected the JSC lead the wrong way around [3070.74] Stephen: and he's just shorted back in a minute. [3074.46] Curry: I find it quite annoying that two of my biggest FPV [3079.18] Curry: nightmares, as we're talking about this, I didn't have a DVR [3083.62] Curry: for one of them, and in the other one, the DVR didn't record. [3086.66] Curry: And on both of them, I lost video in the most horrendous way. [3091.02] Curry: One of them, I was at a meet and I was flying the wing [3094.42] Curry: and I thought I was out in front of me somewhere. [3096.78] Curry: But the wind had blown me way behind myself. [3100.22] Curry: And we were in front of these massive trees and all of a sudden [3104.58] Curry: and I'm like two kilometers away thinking, I don't recognise this area. [3109.7] Curry: This is so weird. [3110.46] Curry: Normally I'd see like a road here or something and the video just goes completely. [3116.06] Curry: I was using the old free sky module and that starts going beep beep beep beep beep beep, [3121.06] Curry: which is like the telemetry is gone. [3123.3] Curry: And I flick it to return to home [3126.14] Curry: because fortunately I had an autopilot on it, but it's like [3130.94] Curry: and then you wait and it was about three minutes, [3135.1] Curry: which seemed like about four hours. [3137.38] Curry: And all I've got is static here and the radio is just beeping at me constantly. [3142.46] Curry: But eventually, after like three minutes, it starts doing two beeps, which means [3146.74] Curry: telemetry is bad, but it's not as bad as it was. [3149.58] Curry: But it was like no video. [3151.7] Curry: And then suddenly it comes over my head and the video comes back [3155.42] Curry: because those trees are that big and it's like, oh my God. [3158.54] Curry: But I didn't, if I could have recorded that, it would have been epic. [3162.42] Curry: And the other one was almost the same thing where we found some low clouds [3167.46] Curry: and like actually low, not like pretend low. [3170.3] Curry: So about 100 metres, we had this cloud cover and we're sort of flying through these clouds [3175.34] Curry: and we're like, this is amazing. [3176.5] Curry: This is the best thing ever. [3177.86] Curry: Yeah, yeah. And then my display goes. [3181.62] Curry: I said display goes, the camera goes, but the OSD is still there. [3185.02] Curry: So I've got nothing like this AHI and nothing else. [3190.62] Curry: And fortunately, RTH-ing to bring it. [3194.14] Curry: And then I managed to land it manually, even with my dodgy skills. [3197.98] Curry: And the entire plane looked like it had just been through the shower. [3202.5] Curry: Basically, the clouds are apparently wet. [3205.94] Curry: And if you fly through them, your plane gets completely wet. [3209.5] Curry: And this was like one of those old CCTV board cameras. [3213.18] Curry: So it got completely soaked and shored out. [3216.34] Curry: And the entire plane is like just do this and its water is just flowing on it. [3223.1] Curry: That's awful. [3223.74] Curry: Jack's back with the battery. [3224.7] Curry: Oh, yeah, that's it. [3225.86] Koel: I had an idea. [3226.66] Koel: That's a 4S. [3230.0] Koel: Ah, because I actually have that's a high voltage, right, isn't it? [3236.43] Koel: I actually have pretty sure it's an HV pack. [3240.27] Koel: Because I actually have that same pack, but 6S. [3244.07] Jack: Oh, it is HV. [3245.95] Jack: I've never noticed or paid attention. [3248.71] Jack: But all that means is. [3250.79] Stephen: Charging it normal. [3252.23] Stephen: Yeah, you're getting like slightly less actual storage capacity, [3256.75] Stephen: because when you charge to HV, you get the 3000. [3260.03] Stephen: When you only charge slightly lower voltage, you'll get like 2800 or something. [3266.47] Stephen: But you get more cycles out of it. [3268.59] Stephen: Yeah, you get more cycles than if you're cooking it. [3271.71] Koel: I'm sure. [3272.11] Koel: Well, like, is it? [3273.59] Koel: Yeah, that's funny. [3274.95] Koel: Yeah, because the only reason I know that that's HV pack is because. [3280.67] Koel: Oh, yeah, because I think GMB, they have that like specific [3286.91] Koel: purple sort of like outer shell is the HV sort of thing. [3292.11] Stephen: Yeah, the purple ones tend to like the long stick ones and they're generally HV. [3297.19] Stephen: They even go down to the tiny little like 450 size. [3302.79] Koel: I mean, is there any reason to not charge it to the full HV, like 4.35 or? [3309.83] Stephen: Yeah, well, it's like your mobile phone where you're like, oh, [3314.11] Stephen: you've got this special battery saving mode that just charges your battery [3317.47] Stephen: to like 90 percent instead of 100 percent. [3320.23] Stephen: That's literally what's happening every time you push that voltage up high [3324.15] Stephen: and give it full charge, you're degrading the chemistry more than if you just [3327.43] Stephen: leave it close to storage. [3330.11] Curry: People in my Tesla freaks out and says, oh, my God, you've charged to 100. [3333.43] Curry: Don't do that every day. [3335.15] Jack: Yeah, yeah. [3336.27] Jack: I have brought out the most frightening thing ever. [3339.23] Jack: Are you ready, guys? [3340.31] Jack: Are you ready? [3341.43] Jack: Oh, um, done my last drone lab. [3350.03] Jack: Hey, our tone, take a photo of this. [3352.11] Jack: Um, this is a four S four thousand [3359.91] Jack: and it's basically the same size as four thousand. [3364.15] Jack: It says eighteen hundred. [3365.27] Jack: No, eighteen. [3366.35] Jack: Yeah, same same as the three thousand. [3368.63] Jack: Sorry. [3369.51] Jack: Yeah. [3370.23] Jack: So basically just go large, man. [3372.23] Stephen: Just stop buying crazy, crazy bachelors. [3374.83] Stephen: OK, it's doable. [3377.98] Koel: Yeah, I'll have to try that out, because [3380.62] Koel: the thing is, I do like the way the five inch flies and I like [3385.46] Koel: longer flight times with a five inch. [3387.38] Koel: Yeah. Oh, I know. [3392.82] Frank: I love that. [3394.54] Jack: Yes, because he says drone labs used to droop so bad. [3398.74] Jack: I can't believe I put it in my mouth. [3401.02] Stephen: That's the same. [3401.98] Stephen: Maybe they're that's valid vintage lipo now. [3405.42] Stephen: They've got that that cache. [3406.94] Stephen: They've been sure that 10 years of seasoning and aging has given them [3411.42] Stephen: a unique bouquet. [3412.94] Stephen: They know what the lipo possesses. [3414.7] Curry: Most of my lipo is a vintage. [3416.62] Curry: I've got batteries. [3417.5] Curry: I'm still flying from 2012. [3420.78] Curry: I know it because I write the dates on them to see how they go. [3423.1] Stephen: He sniffs them and go unique bouquet, leaky electrolytes with hints. [3428.9] Jack: This one's on fire. [3430.82] Jack: What the hell? [3434.3] Jack: Oh, don't worry. [3435.22] Jack: It's a bit of cardboard behind it. [3437.86] Jack: My insurance, that didn't happen. [3445.42] Koel: Oh, I actually just learned how to kill off a lipo yesterday. [3450.86] Koel: My first lipo started puffing up on me really bad. [3453.46] Koel: So I was like, I had to decommission that one. [3457.1] Koel: Yeah. [3459.38] Curry: What did you do? [3461.66] Koel: Well, I know about it a lot. [3465.46] Koel: Yeah. [3466.58] Stephen: Yeah. [3468.94] Stephen: Drop it off. [3470.54] Koel: Well, I tried to to to discharge it as much as possible. [3475.26] Koel: But then the the charger is like, ever, ever voltage below or whatever. [3481.54] Koel: It was like giving me some weird error. [3482.7] Koel: So that's when you got the knife out. [3486.02] Koel: Well, yeah, I got to go the throwing knives and practice my aim. [3489.94] Jack: You know, yeah, I, I flew this week twice a game. [3497.42] Jack: And I got to. [3501.26] Jack: All right, you don't need to zoom in on it. [3502.94] Koel: Calm down. [3505.94] Koel: Let's see. Let's see the proof. [3508.38] Jack: I yeah, hang on. [3509.78] Jack: I can't find the. [3512.58] Stephen: I was just capturing your testimony, Jack. [3515.26] Curry: Well, I know. [3524.21] Curry: Oh, it's going to be the Jack following system. [3527.13] Curry: Yeah, I know. [3529.13] Curry: No wonder I can't. [3530.57] Curry: No wonder it's tables in and out all the time. [3535.09] Jack: Shush. [3536.37] Jack: So, Jack, you've been out flying and what? [3543.69] Jack: Is this the one that was on Instagram? [3545.17] Jack: I want to talk to you about it. [3546.69] Jack: Yes, yeah, Instagram. [3548.61] Jack: I got basically cut long story short. [3551.85] Jack: Curry, thank you for the the tiny whoop. [3555.41] Jack: You lovely, lovely man. [3558.25] Jack: And basically, cut a long story short, I snuck my. [3565.77] Jack: Oh, yes, the whooping with a transmitter with goggles on my screen. [3575.25] Jack: And I, I flew at Comic Con. [3580.21] Curry: The one thing I noticed about this video is as soon as you took off, it says land. [3584.57] Curry: For God's sakes, man. [3587.41] Stephen: God's words. And I can tell you that his batteries are not happy. [3591.25] Stephen: See, that's two point nine volts. [3592.81] Stephen: He's just taken off. [3594.13] Stephen: I tried to fly that thing and I jammed it. [3596.17] Stephen: I succeeded in skidding off a table and hitting someone. [3598.77] Stephen: I don't know how he managed to fly the batteries. [3601.65] Jack: It's the shortest flight known to man. [3604.41] Jack: You could tell it's not good because it notice I arm and then the quad reboots. [3610.61] Jack: I left that in there so that we could talk about it. [3614.33] Jack: I try to take off it. [3616.33] Jack: I don't know what energy completely and that lady is like, what's going on here? [3625.29] Jack: Yeah, I know. [3626.01] Jack: Luckily, a terror had no idea like what to actually expect other than I mean, I'm [3634.17] Jack: sure she she's very intelligent. [3635.97] Jack: So I think she figured out I'm a moron, but I tried a big flashing message of [3641.17] Frank: learn now probably gave her a bit. [3644.57] Jack: Yeah, possibly. [3646.29] Jack: This man should not be flying. [3649.33] Curry: So he had a flight, but it wasn't very long. [3651.73] Curry: Was it was that like the first flight with that battery? [3654.21] Curry: Because it's like that's that's not left. [3658.85] Jack: No, they're my old brushed batteries that were purchased in 2018. [3665.89] Jack: And that's being quite generous. [3670.61] Jack: Yo, Steven, do you want to see us out? [3672.93] Jack: We're running out. [3674.13] Jack: We're out of time. [3674.93] Frank: Very quickly before you do tomorrow night. [3677.45] Frank: I'm going up to London and seeing 450 drones fly. [3683.69] Stephen: Oh, wow. [3686.49] Frank: The Alexandra Palace fireworks display. [3690.77] Frank: They are doing a drone display as well. [3693.45] Frank: So I'm going to go up. [3694.61] Frank: See that. [3696.13] Stephen: Oh, there we are. [3697.21] Stephen: The the future of firework displays instead of dropping flaming things on [3701.29] Stephen: people, pedestrians and passers-by, it's going to be dropping drones on [3704.69] Stephen: pedestrians and passers-by. [3706.49] Stephen: Yeah, I approve. [3707.17] Curry: I think it's kind of sadistic about how many drones fell out of the sky. [3711.33] Curry: Maybe I'll try and count them some. [3713.57] Frank: I know it says 450 on the on the no term. [3716.45] Frank: So that's what I'm expecting. [3718.33] Stephen: We'll see how they will treat by dropping the ones and then turning their [3722.21] Stephen: lights off as well, which makes them a lot harder to see. [3726.53] Jack: Frank, try and talk to them and get an interview, please. [3730.13] Jack: Take your zoom with you and find out what they're running. [3734.01] Jack: If it's argue or whatever, please be a man on the ground. [3739.85] Jack: Gently, rugby tackle them. [3742.29] Jack: Yes. [3742.81] Jack: Ask them lots of questions, please. [3745.77] Jack: I imagine they'll be busy. [3747.97] Jack: Or after the display. [3749.09] Jack: Once once they start coming down, follow them. [3752.81] Jack: Okay, we'll see. [3756.29] Jack: Follow them back to their secret lair. [3758.89] Jack: Yeah, find out what chips they have. [3761.41] Jack: If one drops by you, bring it back for reconnaissance purposes. [3766.37] Frank: Tell us about that. [3767.21] Frank: Are you going to do a throw forward to next week as well? [3771.65] Stephen: I am 32 will be joined by IQ who's been on here before, as well as the [3776.69] Stephen: author of AM 32 and one of the new developers there as well. [3782.13] Stephen: So thanks for the AM 32 folks. [3785.05] Stephen: And we're looking forward to that one. [3786.17] Stephen: It's going to be a great show. [3787.37] Stephen: So we'll see you next week. [3790.77] Jack: Yeah, next week, I will be auctioning my costume off. [3798.21] Jack: Donate to the most wins. [3802.41] Jack: And I will post this to you anywhere in the world. [3810.82] Stephen: This week, you have been joined by the human ESC himself. [3815.26] Stephen: Some call him Jack. [3819.78] Stephen: Oh, luckily he hasn't turtled or he wouldn't be able to get up again. [3829.78] Stephen: Everyone's favorite Curry kitten. [3832.82] Stephen: Goodbye. [3834.02] Stephen: Our overlord and master. [3835.5] Stephen: Thank you very much, Frank. [3837.62] Stephen: Bye. [3839.3] Stephen: Don't move. [3840.1] Stephen: There's been a safety violation. [3842.74] Stephen: It's cold. [3844.38] Stephen: See you and me. [3846.86] Stephen: Have a good night, everyone. [3847.86] Stephen: See you next week. [3849.06] Jack: Bye. [3851.46] Jack: Bye bye. [3854.18] Jack: Someone update me, please. [3856.3] Jack: Telemetry loss.
