[241.99] Frank: Yeah, because I went and saw the drone light show at Alexander powers back in November for bonfire night and was like mind blown.

[254.39] Frank: And then saw that they were going to do a Christmas carol one literally around the back of Jack's like oh really nice like walking distance from Jack's place.
[268.11] Frank: Jack we have to go see this because I just saw a drone show and that was great.

[388.59] Stephen: You get these kind of lines ascending into the sky.
[391.91] Curry: It is interesting because they seem to make a little trail, I guess, because the the camera
[395.99] Curry: shutter speed was set low.
[397.31] Frank: Yeah, yeah, I think so.
[400.47] Frank: Yeah, so they they sort of ended up, you know, like you say, in these these three groups that took
[407.55] Frank: off individually and they because the whole show last like 40 minutes and each group can only last
[420.79] Frank: like 10, 12 minutes.
[422.31] Frank: So they sort of we take up one and that would do a display for the first sort of act of the show.
[430.95] Stephen: Oh, right.
[431.87] Stephen: So they replace them like in obvious sets.
[435.03] Stephen: They don't just kind of drop one.
[436.43] Frank: Very obvious sense.
[437.87] Frank: OK, very obvious sense.
[439.91] Stephen: Yeah, I kind of assumed they just wait and when the battery level got below a certain point, it
[444.75] Stephen: sort of switches light off, drop out the display and get replaced by another one with a full battery.
[449.55] Stephen: Because that's what I've seen previously in a very large display.
[452.35] Curry: I think we've got hundreds of too much intelligence.
[455.63] Curry: Yeah, my understanding of these is that they're not like aware of anything.
[459.43] Curry: They just do their own thing, don't they?
[461.43] Curry: So that it's not like I'm here and I know the other friends are here.
[463.95] Curry: It's just like I'm doing my thing.
[465.11] Stephen: This is where it this is where there is a split in these systems where up to like a couple of
[469.55] Stephen: hundred, you can kind of manage them all relatively traditionally and maybe even use a Wi-Fi mesh.
[475.39] Stephen: And then you get to a point where you need your own like super low bandwidth, low frequency serial
[480.03] Stephen: network, and they're all effectively self-aware, and you've got a pixel cloud, and then the drones
[487.67] Stephen: move to approximate that pixel cloud, right?
[490.35] Stephen: And they are kind of aware of where their neighbors are and aware of their battery levels and
[494.39] Stephen: things, and they can cycle in and out.
[496.15] Stephen: So I think there's there's a gap between hundreds of drones up to like 300 and then
[502.35] Stephen: thousands of drones where you see the really crazy big displays where they're much more like autonomous.
[509.95] Curry: So what we had here was the test own value brand of drone shows.
[514.63] Curry: I mean, it's Brighton, it's not Las Vegas, it's what I'm saying, right?
[518.67] Frank: Well, this was they were very keen to make this clear at the beginning of the shows were also
[524.07] Frank: queuing into the seats in the cricket room.
[526.91] Frank: This was the global premiere of the Christmas Carol drone show, which I think wasn't intended to be in Brighton.
[536.55] Frank: I think that was I think there's been some some weather up north that meant that some previous shows didn't happen.
[544.63] Frank: So this ended up being the global premiere that we attended, which is exciting.
[548.75] Frank: That's cool.
[549.75] Frank: Yeah, so I mean, so like the one I saw in November was very much kind of like instead of a fireworks display,
[557.59] Frank: there was sort of shapes in the sky and that was that was exciting.
[561.11] Frank: This was, you know, they're going into this as the Christmas Carol.
[565.35] Frank: This is displaying the Christmas Carol and like going into this, I didn't have really any idea of what to expect in terms of like how are they going to
[575.51] Frank: tell the story of the Christmas Carol with drones, which I was excited to sort of see how that was going to be done.
[584.63] Frank: I mean, Jack and Tony, do you have any kind of pre-existing idea of what was going to happen?
[591.43] Frank: Well, I kind of thought it was they'd do what they actually did, really, just do images in this guy of
[598.79] Tony: of clocks and whatever the snow for images in the sky, clocks, that was what the Christmas Carol looked like, I said, clocks, not TV.
[614.23] Curry: So when you say Christmas Carol, is it Christmas Carol with Scrooge in the free dose or basically that is quite a tricky sounding story.
[626.95] Curry: It's quite a tricky sounding story to tell with large objects in the sky, I would have thought.
[633.75] Frank: But it was also accompanied by Matt Lucas was reading, was doing a sort of doing a reading of the Christmas Carol
[642.47] Frank: while the drone formations and drone light displays were going on.
[648.71] Frank: And so what came to me today or yesterday was what it was, was almost like Jack and Laurie.
[657.43] Frank: It was, you know, the story being the way describing it. And there was these tableau
[666.47] Frank: that the drones were sort of painting in the sky to kind of follow on the story.
[673.03] Tony: But it was, you know, some of it was very good. Some of it was a bit questionable.
[683.43] Jack: I was saying, what can you say? What is it? I mean, there was times where they
[691.51] Jack: deliberately chose things that would be easy to display.
[695.91] Stephen: Yeah, but was that the cock and balls phase of the show?
[703.27] Jack: Their go to was like hearts. There was like a spinning top, I think at one point.
[711.11] Frank: And then like top and a toy soldier. Yeah, the toy soldier was impressive, though,
[716.95] Jack: because obviously, you got to think you're not you think you're like pixels of like
[722.95] Jack: pixel density of a screen. But when you can arrange the screen into just the shape that
[729.43] Jack: you need, then it means that you've got a ton of pixels. So with the toy soldier,
[735.11] Jack: because it's long and thin, and they all kind of stack up, you know, it's quite,
[744.6] Jack: you know, you get you then get a lot of resolution.
[747.88] Frank: So they did this nice one with snow falling, which was like, it doesn't look that impressive.
[754.68] Frank: But actually, what was going on there is like, rather than
[761.64] Frank: as so this did have this bright white light on the drone, as it was going down in that kind of
[767.32] Frank: snow falling type pattern. And then the light would go out on the drone, and it was go
[772.28] Frank: helpful leather, you know, absolutely as fast as it can back up to the top,
[777.16] Frank: and then like come back slowly, sort of take that snow falling pattern again. So it's like
[784.04] Frank: continuously falling snow in that volume, with just the sound of like slightly panics drones
[791.0] Frank: around the back stage, trying to get back to the top again.
[796.04] Curry: Could you hear them quite clearly? Was there a drone of drones?
[801.0] Tony: Yeah, you could hear them. But the speakers were so loud that I put around the cricket pitch.
[809.32] Tony: It was hard to hear.
[812.68] Jack: Because there was so many of them, you kind of once they started,
[817.0] Jack: you know, displaying some things, you kind of felt like a bit of a downdraft,
[821.72] Jack: because there were so many of them. Very, very familiar, like wisps of cold air.
[830.6] Frank: I mean, we were on our site, to be clear, this was like a cricket ground in the middle of winter.
[836.6] Tony: Did you two get neck ache? Because me and Greg got a neck ache.
[840.44] Tony: I guess we were standing, looking up.
[843.08] Tony: I'm drinking alcohol.
[850.44] Stephen: To alleviate the problems of neck ache. It's not an endorsement of meth oil, is it?
[858.2] Frank: Me and Jack had seats right at the top, the highest point of the
[865.32] Frank: seating area in the cricket ground. So we were sort of almost level with the half the display.
[873.08] Tony: I think being further away was probably better as well.
[876.68] Frank: Yeah, yeah, we had a good view.
[878.84] Tony: I think we were too moved half way through the show.
[881.88] Jack: You two should have gone by the family meeting point.
[885.56] Tony: Yeah, we wouldn't have gotten a neck ache. But we were standing near the bar.
[893.4] Frank: So it's a difficult choice, isn't it? You can either stand by the bar
[897.24] Frank: or stand where you get a good view.
[902.6] Frank: Yeah, so they had the snow. They had some sort of fairly abstract patterns, like snowflakes
[909.72] Frank: and things, which is sort of more what I was expecting to have there. Because like you say,
[917.24] Frank: if you've got a couple hundred drones, then there's only so much you can do. But then they
[922.44] Frank: started doing like actual physical things like this screen plan, grandfather clock.
[929.16] Stephen: The rotation looks very cool, because you can do something that's just like a picture,
[933.88] Stephen: a 2D picture, but the rotation really adds a lot better, I think.
[937.8] Tony: Yeah, they've done a swinging bell one, which was really good.
[942.92] Frank: But yeah, the bell with the clanger moving underneath it, so it was all animated.
[947.72] Frank: That was really good. And they had a lot of lighting on the ground as well, which
[955.0] Frank: sort of set the scene quite nicely. And they did some kind of like almost lasers up into the sky,
[961.64] Frank: which which helped at some points.
[964.6] Jack: If you got my photos, I did add them into the group chat.
[969.08] Jack: I liked your hat. We need a picture of Jack in his hat.
[971.88] Frank: I think everyone loved the videos, unfortunately, you'll have to add them in.
[981.56] Frank: But as well as these kind of like fairly geometric type things, they also have the characters. They
[987.88] Frank: did have Scrooge literally being displayed there with like animated eyebrows and like
[995.08] Frank: holding things and doing things. The only thing is the eyes.
[1002.04] Frank: They're a bit weird.
[1006.2] Stephen: There's a pixel density problem there, but it still looks cool.
[1009.56] Stephen: For local council to do it, it's impressive.
[1012.44] Frank: I don't even think it's sort of the number of drones, but I think there's a
[1017.32] Frank: my sort of impression of it was that there's a limitation of how close the drones can be.
[1022.04] Frank: Oh, right. Yeah.
[1023.08] Frank: And so that sort of limits kind of you can't get a really strong edge or anything like that.
[1029.4] Frank: Or, you know, you couldn't have like a bundle of them together doing it.
[1033.0] Frank: So you've got literally got this pinprick of light being the eyes, which gave it a line circles.
[1041.64] Frank: Yeah, or some kind of persistence of vision display on the drone or something.
[1046.6] Frank: Yeah, but it sort of gave it this slightly terminator type filter.
[1051.96] Stephen: That just makes it cooler.
[1054.2] Frank: Yeah, it's definitely a style.
[1058.04] Koel: So Lincoln, right?
[1061.8] Jack: And also, you run into certain things with like, if you have too many drones,
[1067.0] Jack: and you've got stuff behind it, because it's transparent image, you start things start getting
[1074.84] Jack: a bit muddy, muddy, because like, you know, things are displaying behind it.
[1080.84] Jack: You know, it's like that sort of is looking on the inside of a 2D box.
[1085.08] Jack: A 3D box, or the outside, that sort of weird vision flip.
[1091.0] Jack: I think they called it the, the factor effect, didn't I?
[1095.0] Stephen: If your audience is only on one side, I guess you can selectively turn off the pixels behind it when
[1099.8] Stephen: they're occluded. But otherwise, you couldn't really do it for your 200 360.
[1104.6] Frank: That's what they were doing a lot of the time was like, having having the
[1109.32] Frank: these characters or the tableau or whatever, sort of rotate, so that I think because the
[1115.4] Frank: the audience is almost like,
[1118.6] Stephen: Zed culling back to 3D graphics always comes down to that.
[1122.44] Stephen: Marley.
[1123.88] Frank: And the other thing that they did quite nicely with this sort of, you know, text, like where
[1128.28] Frank: they have Bahamberg, Marley, Merry Christmas, that all worked quite nicely.
[1135.24] Frank: I thought it was quite funny at the end, it was literally them landing. And there
[1141.8] Frank: there wasn't entirely a crescendo. There wasn't a like, Oh, this is this is the finale.
[1149.56] Frank: So there was sort of a collection, a smattering of applause. Some people have already started
[1158.44] Frank: leaving. And it was kind of a slightly awkward ending.
[1162.2] Frank: They all landing on top of each other.
[1164.52] Koel: No, they're all spaced.
[1168.6] Koel: I'm just curious what kind of batteries they're running? Like, what's the milliamp power?
[1174.28] Jack: Yeah, they were 4s.
[1177.8] Jack: Um, I don't know. I don't know how many milliamp power.
[1183.64] Koel: Massive, I guess. Well, I guess maybe they don't even super massive because they're
[1186.76] Koel: sitting in a small space. But
[1189.48] Curry: crucially, did you manage to get hold of the organizing people and talk to them about it?
[1196.04] Frank: Well, Jack, definitely.
[1201.4] Frank: Yeah, Jack refused to leave without seeing them.
[1207.64] Koel: Really? Yeah, that's impressive. Refuse to know to the coordinators.
[1214.2] Jack: Are you filming me going over? I'm not leaving this until I talk to the wrong guy.

[1222.28] Stephen: It's like a nice way to find out what software they were using, what batteries they were using.
[1228.2] Jack: Yeah, I did. I did. I got to meet the lovely Lee Thomas.
[1233.96] Jack: Yeah, they're lined up to hopefully come on in the next couple of weeks.

[1241.48] Stephen: We were talking to Skystars just a couple of weeks ago, and they were talking about the
[1245.64] Stephen: growth that they're seeing and maybe doing dedicated drones for specifically for light
[1250.2] Stephen: displays. I think we we touched on some of the software where the guy said he was experimenting
[1255.24] Stephen: with light brush, which was some open source. Skybrush. Yeah, yeah. That's the one.
[1262.28] Jack: Frank downloaded it. Gave it a bit of a one-two, I hear.
[1267.96] Stephen: Oh, yeah. Try and draw something with three tiny whoops in your bedroom.
[1271.64] Stephen: Yeah, exactly.
[1275.0] Frank: Yeah. It was an experience. Before the show, I think it's more that the content of the show
[1287.16] Frank: was aimed at kids, right? It was a Jack and Ori style reading of The Christmas Carol.
[1293.32] Frank: And so it wasn't quite as high energy as the cosmic wonders Carl Sagan-esque thing that they
[1304.52] Frank: did at the Bonfire Night display that I saw. So it's a very different energy. But it was very
[1312.44] Frank: interesting to see this as to see more of a narrative in a longer format of a display.
[1319.96] Frank: It was interesting to see how they approached that and what they've done with it. It's still
[1326.92] Frank: very technically impressive from what I saw. Just the fact that we managed to fly these
[1332.28] Stephen: things 40 minutes doing coordinated displays, that's pretty awesome. Yeah.
[1337.16] Tony: Exactly.
[1338.52] Tony: Go get some seats and look at it because you'll get a headache. And also, I made out the shapes
[1348.12] Tony: better looking through a woman's phone who was videoing the whole thing rather than looking up.
[1354.44] Tony: You can see the shapes much better through a camera. There's something very creepy about that.
[1360.76] Tony: Even you said you would do the same, wouldn't you, Frank? You could see it.
[1364.12] Frank: We're all looking through this woman's phone.
[1368.12] Frank: The thing is, everyone was getting their phone out and taking pictures of this stuff.
[1376.44] Stephen: Jack's got the behind the scenes.
[1378.28] Stephen: You really do appreciate the complexity of it. It's only a couple of hundred that that is.
[1383.8] Stephen: Hang on, let me go.
[1385.32] Tony: 720 drives there they had to turn on.
[1388.6] Tony: Really? I thought you said there was only 180.
[1391.32] Tony: 180 each batch.
[1394.6] Tony: 720 took off. So, 180 would take off and do 15 minutes, 10 minutes,
[1400.2] Tony: then land. And then the next 180 would take off.
[1403.72] Koel: There's four batches.
[1405.32] Koel: That makes sense.
[1407.0] Tony: What I would have liked at the end was them all to take off just for the last
[1411.48] Tony: dregs of the battery and do something really healthy.
[1415.48] Stephen: And just fall out and just fall out.
[1417.32] Tony: Fall into center and fall out or something like that and spin around, I don't know.
[1424.44] Curry: I mean, it would be nice to talk to the guys, but this is all purely GPS position,
[1428.68] Curry: which is like a lot of faith in all your quads getting a decent signal and being
[1434.12] Curry: able to position themselves accurately for a lot of minutes, especially when some are
[1439.08] Curry: coming down and going up and not crashing into each other. It's pretty cool, technically.
[1445.0] Koel: Yeah, I'm curious if they talk to, what are they talking to? Obviously,
[1450.68] Koel: there's some kind of programming obviously involved, but are they aware of the other's
[1455.24] Koel: position and whatnot? I guess these are questions for the guys or the people who do it.
[1463.22] Koel: We shall discover.
[1464.98] Jack: We can ask.

[1476.02] Jack: Unfortunately, this is all I got a toy soldier.

[1500.42] Curry: Is it transforming into a dildo? It does look a bit suspicious.

[1524.74] Stephen: It's interesting to see them do this without, because clearly, people don't want clouds of
[1529.94] Stephen: burning smoke everywhere these days. As much as we joke about drones landing on people,
[1534.82] Stephen: fireworks were landing on people. Sometimes there would be fire. I remember hearing about
[1540.74] Stephen: display in Hungary where I think the city mayor insisted it happened despite firewinds and there
[1546.18] Stephen: were a lot of property fires. I think drones are a way forward that you can do these elaborate
[1553.54] Stephen: displays without massive amounts of fire risk and without clouds of suffocating smoke.
[1560.18] Stephen: That's pretty cool.
[1564.02] Frank: The Alexander Ballon show was the first one I went to since the last one I went to,
[1571.14] Frank: in between the two of them was about 10 years where it was not banned. It didn't happen because
[1577.94] Frank: it had fired into the crowd one year and they were like, yeah, we're not doing this again.
[1583.86] Frank: So there is risk with fireworks that I feel like you'd get a bit more notice if drones started
[1592.98] Curry: doing things. It feels like it can be done very safely on drones. On that sort of situation,
[1598.98] Curry: you had them all flying inside a field where everyone sat on the outside. So even if they
[1603.62] Curry: failed, they'd just drop down onto the grass, presumably. Unlike fireworks that have a lot of
[1609.3] Stephen: unpredictable propellants stuck in them. I want fireworks and drones. Yeah, there we go. We've
[1615.7] Frank: done that before, right? We've had Roman candles on drones at the end show. Very few things can
[1622.74] Frank: go wrong with that type of setup. Exactly. To find the best of both. That's how you get things really
[1630.02] Stephen: safe. It's one of two or three things that you know are going to go wrong. Fireworks are mostly
[1635.38] Frank: safe. Drones are mostly safe. So if you put them together, they must be really safe, right?
[1641.62] Stephen: Pretty much. The safeness. Probably just do it on top of a moving car just to make it a bit safer.
[1651.54] Jack: Why not? Absolutely. It's quite joyous. It's not evident if it burns itself.
[1657.7] Stephen: Yeah. Was it ever really unsafe if no one can find the bits?
[1661.94] Jack: Everything's a smoke machine, if you operate it incorrectly enough.

[1736.5] Stephen: though? I think that if the magician's trick involved sitting configuring autopilot for an
[1742.5] Stephen: hour and a half, I'm not sure whether they could necessarily be wanting to steal it.

[1753.14] Curry: In my mind, you've got this piece of software, and you've got this display, and you can drag

[1765.86] Curry: adjust it or something, and it's just like that. You just drag it around, and then you say rotate,
[1770.26] Curry: and they all rotate, and you just bring them in. That's my impression of how it works.
[1775.86] Curry: Whether then you have all these big computers spitting out like Wi-Fi and saying, do this now,
[1784.18] Curry: which I guess it must control it real time because you'd never trust it to say, okay,
[1788.5] Curry: everybody start now and run your program because that's going to end it up.
[1792.9] Frank: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. It is exciting, but it's also why I wanted to go see another one
[1799.94] Frank: because as much as I was all struck by the first one I saw, I did kind of wonder like,

[1978.34] Frank: the space they're allowed to fly in. If they say, oh, this has gone outside of the zone from
[1984.1] Frank: that point of view, then it's really clear. I did wonder like, oh, maybe they've got like Mavics up
[1989.54] Frank: there being like marking the corners and seeing if anything starts wandering off to somewhere
[1995.54] Stephen: it shouldn't be.
[1996.1] Stephen: Speaking of that style of flying, I noticed that iNav dropped a new release and they actually set
[2000.74] Stephen: up geofencing. It actually does like a pong style bounce so that you set up a primitive edge
[2006.98] Stephen: you're flying in. When you hit the wall, which is the geofence, it'll reverse the controls as
[2014.74] Stephen: if you were the ball and pong and you just bounce off and then take the opposite angle like you
[2019.38] Stephen: reflected off the wall. That sounds quite fun. Not an iNav user, but that does sound like fun.
