We say [12.56] Jack: Massive. Thank you to call us campus art folk now Sam Dharma on with the show [23.12] Jack: We are live and I am stealing the intro I was here first [56.26] Jack: I know you are super enthusiastic nowadays after [61.94] Jack: The rep reminding phone calls [65.94] Stephen: No, I don't know no, no, no the abuse complaints of lack of enthusiasm and [72.74] Stephen: The beating we were just till morale. Are you just worried about you, mate? [76.78] Jack: We thought this show has ground you paper thin and you don't want to live anymore [83.18] Stephen: No, no, it wasn't the show. It was very much the world and not the show. So it's all right. I feel yeah [89.98] Stephen: But but yeah for though just to you know round that off [93.3] Stephen: Um, I like to look for kind of stories of positivity and drones [96.62] Stephen: And then there's a wider world interest of kind of looking at drones [100.58] Stephen: It it started out being something that was massively creative and fun and a hobby to learn things and I got a bit ground down [107.66] Stephen: So I apologize if I've been a bit negative [110.22] Stephen: But I'm trying to look for you know, positive things that we can do with these fun little flying machines and you know [117.94] Stephen: Be a bit upbeat about it [121.38] Jack: Well speaking speaking of that someone who's really turned their life around. We've got the wonderful Shane [127.62] Jack: from [128.78] Jack: Sydney drone and [130.82] Jack: the the host of [133.7] Jack: Drone is life as our guest today. Say hello. Hello. How are you doing? [139.3] Jack: Yeah, and I've and we've got everyone's favorite curry kin [144.62] Jack: Hello [146.14] Jack: And the man with my star Steven. All right, and I'm bright until I fly [152.14] Jack: Hello and welcome. Have you is it like stepping back into the past Shane? [158.34] Shane: Is it was it's been a long time since I've been on YouTube. I must admit I do miss you [164.66] Curry: So long that I had to reintroduce myself to Shane and ask who he was and then he reminded me [169.94] Curry: He was part of Jonah's life. I was like, oh, right. Sorry about that. I do [174.22] Jack: He is drawing his life [178.06] Jack: He's the man that sold me a rain shield [183.54] Jack: That I can never use because I live in Brighton the wind is we'll just destroy it [188.82] Jack: Yeah, the umbrella the TBS umbrella [192.34] Shane: Okay, the umbrella as a rain shield it was [196.94] Curry: Rain rain shield sounds like whoo, like, you know, someone's who makes that Reiki or something. Yeah [204.22] Jack: That's what it was called. It was called a rain shield. It wasn't an umbrella. It was a rain shield [213.54] Shane: So long and [215.62] Shane: I do kind of miss it, but I [218.54] Shane: I'm always behind the camera now rather than in front of it. Is that bad? [223.58] Shane: Yeah, and I still keep in touch with some of the old members. So George [231.22] Shane: Steve Aries off in Scotland. I love I love him [239.7] Jack: I [240.74] Jack: Killed to have him on the audio. I think he did say one point [247.14] Shane: Finished he said that over I think he was thinking about coming across but I think he's just got too busy with work [252.9] Shane: I think that was his problem [255.42] Shane: But I haven't I haven't spoken to Kelsey or Malcolm in a while. It's been a while [259.78] Shane: They do comment on my like Instagram posts and stuff as cine drone when I'm while I'm away [265.98] Shane: working away [267.74] Shane: But we haven't had a phone call or a chat when a while maybe I should because [272.26] Shane: Me and mouth were really really really good friends [276.06] Shane: But you know life life takes over [278.7] Shane: And you go different ways. It doesn't help that we're all [282.42] Shane: Dotted all around the country at the same time. We're not [285.58] Shane: Not in the same cities. It makes it even harder [287.74] Shane: But saying that all my new buddies that I have now in production crews and take TV and films [292.94] Shane: They're all over the world and I probably speak to them more than I probably do in my own family if I'm honest [300.34] Shane: It's just weird how what you know how life takes everything you get torn away from other things [306.62] Jack: Yeah, I [308.42] Jack: Miss I miss Kelsey so much my one of my favorite FPV memories was [315.78] Jack: loading up [317.22] Jack: one of [318.78] Jack: Gavin ferries [320.7] Jack: nerf [321.82] Jack: Like Gatling gun it was just like fully loading it cramming it full of bullets [327.74] Jack: And then just handed it to her and being like shoot Gavin the face [331.5] Jack: And she just went over and just shot bullet after bullet. It's like a I got a three-minute video [338.02] Jack: I've heard just like unloading this Gatling gun for the nerf darts and Gavs trying to program [344.26] Jack: He's just like laughing and like crying at the same time [350.7] Jack: It was brilliant. This is like such a laugh [355.38] Jack: Maybe you guys could have a reunion light show. Yeah, I did [359.46] Shane: I just think about it just before Christmas [362.06] Shane: I thought do we do we dust off that drone his live YouTube channel and just kind of do a Christmas special? [369.02] Jack: Yeah, I mean you can come on here and do it if you want like [373.78] Shane: Yeah [376.5] Shane: Again life got in the way of a Christmas and I was no longer around for it. And you know [384.42] Shane: That's the problem when you work in TV and film at a moment and moments notice you can be [391.22] Shane: Couple of weeks away different country [394.86] Shane: Different production crews every time and you just think you know, it is a hard slug, but I love the traveling [401.14] Shane: I think it's my probably the best bit of it always the traveling of it all I do like [405.18] Shane: The hustle and the bus over get airport. I don't know why [412.02] Curry: Yeah [414.86] Curry: But the airport's a really crappy bit in the middle if you've been to anywhere [419.14] Curry: Really exciting and an interesting on your new travels there [423.62] Shane: so [425.1] Shane: so last year [427.46] Shane: I did [430.18] Shane: 13 countries last year [434.62] Shane: Some of them really nice really beautiful places to go to a [438.94] Shane: Couple that really dreadful and had like the worst experiences in my life [444.78] Shane: But it was for a TV program. So you kind of have to kind of just see past that and shoot through it [452.54] Shane: Example so we went to Morocco [456.38] Shane: and it took [458.74] Shane: Jack I don't remember my wife Fran. You must remember Fran [462.14] Shane: Yeah, yeah, great hair. Just I remember the hair you remember the hair. Yeah, so [468.9] Shane: Fran does a lot. God bless her. She is my [473.26] Shane: She does all the apps. She's a rock [475.5] Shane: Yeah [478.06] Shane: And she did she also gets a lot of permissions for me flying permissions for when I'm [483.06] Shane: Away or pairing to go away because I'm too busy dealing with kit so she can do all the kind of admin side [489.02] Shane: then Morocco has [491.02] Shane: An outright banned on drones if you if you take a drone into Morocco [496.74] Shane: They take it they confiscate it at the airport. It's gone. It can be it could be sub 250 whatever in it [502.94] Shane: And if you're a hobbyist or a tourist it it'll go [506.22] Shane: They'll just take it off you and you'll never see it again [509.1] Shane: I think they might now let you collect it if you're flying out of the same airport [514.18] Shane: They'll give they'll literally confiscated give you a ticket. Can you ship it back to yourself? [519.18] Jack: least [520.58] Jack: No, he's a [522.74] Curry: Interesting because I was watching a YouTube channel where they're they're motorcycling through Morocco and they've come down from [529.82] Curry: Portugal and over on the ferry and they said oh we we're having to leave our drone in [534.1] Curry: This locker because there's an outright ban. I was like really is it? Yeah, is it that you can't just sneak it in or something? [540.06] Shane: Is it no every that they when you fly to Morocco, so we flew in to Tangier [546.14] Shane: and then the program we were filming we ran all the way down the entire length of the country and flew out of [553.7] Shane: Marrakech [555.1] Shane: We did you know, we did Casablanca and all sorts. We you know, we just sort of north to south. It was beautiful and [561.3] Shane: It [563.38] Shane: Was yeah, we had to [568.06] Shane: Were France help she or actually all of France help [573.06] Shane: she applied we had to apply to the Ministry of Defense in Morocco to get my drones in and [580.86] Shane: then [582.5] Shane: They had to do a complete security and background check on me and everything. So when you get off the plane in Morocco [589.46] Shane: everybody [591.06] Shane: And every single bag you have whether it's carry-on or it's on hold gets scanned [595.54] Shane: It takes you hours to get off a plane in Morocco. It's a tiny airport, but it would take you about three hours [601.94] Shane: Actually, we were there for about four and a half hours [604.18] Shane: To get off the plane get everything scanned and because when they when I picked up my all my kit from hold [611.46] Shane: Massey got me flight case and it was just around the different drones [615.34] Shane: FPV drones Mavic threes and spire three and then tried to [621.02] Shane: Security with them. They just absolutely all these cue cards just went nuts [626.58] Shane: And then my fixer was there we have a fixer who's who's obviously [631.62] Shane: native [633.06] Shane: Come over and he was like, oh, no, no because he was speaking to them an area [635.86] Shane: He's like, no, no, no, they got permissions and then then we got took to a side room [639.86] Shane: Where they went through all the paper all the permissions and they phoned up and checked it all and then we had to do our car [646.22] Shane: Nay, which is to is to be able to import it without getting any taxes on it [651.22] Shane: And they literally sat there and I know one of a lie [654.38] Shane: They went through the whole list and checked every serial number every battery serial number ever SD card serial number [662.06] Shane: controller ceiling and ever and [664.26] Shane: Ticked it off lives and if there was anything left out [667.42] Shane: It got confiscated [671.22] Stephen: Did you manage to [673.34] Shane: everything listed down to [675.54] Shane: Goggles gold batteries SD cards everything that is so I colleague [681.02] Shane: So anyway, like four and a half hours we'd get through the entire production is waiting for me on the other side [686.22] Shane: And off we go and we start filming [689.86] Shane: But prior to that we had to apply for permissions for every location where we're gonna be filming at [697.82] Shane: fight throughout Morocco and [700.46] Shane: And we had to tell him what date we were filming [702.5] Shane: what time we would be filming what time the flight would start when it would end and [707.14] Shane: Every time we went to take to the air. We had to phone the police phone the military and then phone the [714.42] Shane: Governor of that province and then we had to wait an hour for them all to turn up [721.46] Stephen: So they could monitor the flight the governor of the province had to just rock up and be like, oh, yeah [726.74] Stephen: That's a mavic and you're like, yeah [731.86] Shane: They would constantly over your shoulder looking at the controller [737.3] Shane: Saying you can't go that way. You can't film that you can't do this and we had to do that [742.06] Stephen: We were there for these days. What the hell are they building down there? [749.42] Stephen: Would kindly call [751.26] Stephen: FA that [752.82] Shane: Great a great amount of sand. Yeah. I mean we were filming a train series [759.5] Shane: So this was [763.46] Shane: Amazing train adventures with Nick Nels. Okay [766.9] Shane: It was channel five. So you will use never infrastructure. So that could be sensitive them could be could be [773.02] Shane: But I mean the country is like if you're not in a resort the country's near on falling apart [778.78] Shane: Do you know if you know some of the streets that we drove through? [782.82] Shane: To get where we needed to go to do to get you know, film the train going past it and create some shots [788.1] Shane: Literally look like Black Hawk down [790.58] Shane: it was [792.58] Shane: Outrageous [796.66] Stephen: To find these stretches of like marketplaces and stuff that yeah [800.62] Stephen: But they could be four or five hundred years ago just tiny little streets with donkeys and stuff [805.22] Shane: Yeah, well, you know you see the average that they say sponsor a donkey and you see this donkey and it's well and defend [810.86] Shane: It's got a couple of broken legs or something. It's hobbling the streets all that exists there [814.46] Shane: Yeah, yeah, but if you're on a resort a holiday resort because bear in mind every night we stayed in a different hotel [820.1] Shane: we were kind of moving our way down the country and [824.22] Shane: The resorts beautiful [826.46] Shane: if you want to hold it, you know, if you're in a proper hotel and it's cut off from the outside world and [832.22] Shane: Saw glitz and glamour [833.74] Shane: They were amazing [834.98] Shane: But as soon as you leave the towns and the cities and start going through parts of the desert all sorts where you fix it [841.38] Shane: is that [842.42] Shane: It's a whole another world over there. It really is [846.62] Curry: so you kind of expect [848.94] Curry: From from a late layperson's point of view that don't worry [852.54] Curry: It's TV production and production companies handling this but I guess as you you're your own company [857.78] Curry: So they just expect you to handle it and turn up and be able to film somehow. It's [862.38] Shane: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. They [864.94] Shane: They were covering the costs [866.78] Shane: for the permissions and application forms and things like that for our fixer because before we got there and we gave him a schedule where [872.58] Shane: We're flying in what days and what time? [875.06] Shane: he physically had to go and visit the almost like the [879.34] Shane: the counts of the local counts of that of that area and put a permission in for every single one and [886.58] Shane: he was charging the [888.86] Shane: He was charging the production crew like a thousand pound a day to go and do this [893.64] Shane: Because you couldn't do it online. They're so so [897.44] Shane: Backwards and technology that but you go over there. They got 220 mile an hour trains [902.88] Shane: then the rail network is so [907.36] Shane: Fast compared to anything over here [910.44] Stephen: What's the only way to get from one side to the other because the yeah structures? Yeah a bunch of broken up roads with people [917.2] Stephen: full of [919.72] UNKNOWN: I [921.24] Shane: Mean camera takes a bit longer than turn on our train [924.64] Shane: But but yeah, it's just so weird. But yeah, so I had I had a real split between the the high-tech [931.2] Stephen: You know, yeah rich people and people living off the land a couple of yards beside the train track them [937.84] Shane: Yeah, absolutely. It's it was crazy woman it you're okay. One last story about Morocco. We were so first day filming [945.56] Shane: We were in Tangier [947.72] Shane: Nick and the the film crew were getting on the train [952.72] Shane: Basically my job. I had a camera around with me in my job [955.6] Shane: We had a higher van and basically we were chasing the train so we would be a mile outside the station [960.44] Shane: We've been with leaving the station [961.64] Shane: And then we had like points on a Google map where we needed to get to catch the train going through tunnels and beautiful [967.88] Shane: landscapes and stuff [969.52] Shane: So we got to the first location at 6 o'clock in the morning where my lights at the station the train leaves the station [974.64] Shane: And I'm stood there [976.24] Shane: Set up drones in the air the guy and caromans on the side of the side of the railroad track and our fixer is Willis [981.36] Shane: in the van and he said [983.68] Shane: And we're just there ready to film in there's a dog behind us [987.52] Shane: about five hundred yards away from us and it's barking its head off for us and we're like [994.0] Curry: Just maybe is this [996.4] Shane: His dog is this and next minute the fixer goes running at the dog and he's clapping his hands like wow scares the dog away [1003.0] Shane: And I looked I looked at Sam. He was the cameras like that's a bit weird [1007.08] Shane: And I said to the fixer he said oh he said he said he'll be back in a minute. He'd be back with his mates [1012.4] Shane: He's like your breakfast [1015.08] Shane: They are they literally pack hunt you like they are wolves because they're wired [1020.48] Shane: And he said if I don't scare them off if we keep coming back with more and more dogs come back man in greater numbers [1025.8] Shane: Yeah, and then you are on the menu for the morning [1030.18] Shane: I was like oh my god. I'm like when's this train leaving because we need to film this in land and get in the van and go [1037.86] Shane: Yeah, you just don't expect that from [1042.58] Shane: What you were what to me looked like a Labrador or something [1046.5] Jack: Fails so fast didn't Shane used to own during his life. I did and I did and [1053.54] Jack: You're not getting the names mixed up and then he also asks what happened to it [1060.26] Curry: Yeah, I think that the larger question there is what happened and how did you transition into doing what you're doing now? [1067.7] Shane: So if you remember [1070.26] Shane: when drone his life was going [1074.18] Shane: With some of the sponsor pilots so Kelsey and [1078.7] Shane: jab number James bowls [1081.38] Shane: Hmm we all did [1084.02] Shane: Say the to the drone his life. I was sat working in the office one day the phone rang and this lovely woman spoke to me [1090.9] Shane: Called Jennifer said oh hi. I'm from a production crew in London. Well, we're going to do a [1097.26] Shane: television advert for Vodafone and a celebrity didn't say who the celebrity was at the time [1102.78] Shane: We're after some drone pilots to come up and do some drone flying in London and etc etc and I and I'm to be honest [1110.82] Shane: I kind of took it with a pincher. So thinking [1119.06] Shane: You know, it's a bit of a joke I'll [1121.7] Shane: I'll just ignore that one sort of thing [1124.66] Shane: and I would like to she phoned back again and said can I put a quote into her to [1129.94] Shane: to [1131.18] Shane: Build this racetrack indoors in London and take some pilots up with us [1135.46] Shane: So I I made another ridiculous quote thinking it wasn't real [1139.34] Shane: But I did price it [1140.98] Shane: Accordingly, I did pick up the number then kind of panic about what was spending after you could do one of those quotes of the I'd [1146.5] Stephen: Rather not put up with this [1149.5] Shane: Kind of did that put it in put an email it up to her the the production company was we are social [1158.74] Shane: So yeah, so I emailed up to her and [1162.5] Shane: She found that the next day I said and that's fine [1166.58] Shane: Um, can you do it? Can you be ready in two weeks and I was like [1170.3] Shane: uh, well kind of it's a lot of money I kind of need paying before we do it because you know, I [1176.78] Shane: Quite a little thousands for it because they wanted an awful lot [1180.54] Shane: And uh, they went yeah, no problems and the very next day all the money landed in my bank account [1186.78] Shane: well [1190.86] Shane: I don't think they're like taking the mickey anymore [1193.98] Shane: I know like my workload for it. We just like went through the roof [1197.1] Shane: I just don't know is I've never been so stressed in my life and then and then only then that I speak to james [1202.06] Shane: About it and I spoke to uh kelsey about it [1205.42] Shane: I said, what are you doing these couple of days? [1207.18] Shane: Do you want to come down into london and do some filming for vodafone and a celebrity? [1213.1] Stephen: You keep saying a celebrity did the celebrity turn up or yes, yes slightly turned up. So the celebrity was louis hamilton, right? [1220.62] Shane: Um, so we were up there. We created this this this tv advert for them. Um, and it was to launch vodafone's 5g [1229.66] Shane: and um like like everything um, it [1234.3] Shane: We filmed in like middle of the year and it didn't go live until I think it was like november [1240.62] Shane: Later that year. So it was a good six months. I would say between filming and it going live [1246.14] Shane: By that point, you know, we could say anything because we all signed nda's and stuff [1249.98] Shane: So we're like, I can't really say anything to the world and then when it did come out of course it all went mad [1255.42] Shane: But it's just one of those knock-on effects [1257.66] Shane: You know you do a bit of work for one production company and the next minute the phone keeps ringing from production [1262.78] Shane: Is it oh, can you do this for the drone? Can you do this for the drone? [1266.22] Shane: Um, and it goes on and on from there [1270.22] Shane: And every time you go on a shoot you with different production crews you with different production managers and they just you know [1275.82] Shane: You keep telling them what you're able to do with the drone and it blows their mind and then [1280.62] Shane: Next minute you're being recommended to somebody else you you're going with a different channel [1284.86] Shane: um [1286.78] Shane: But so yeah, so that's how I got into it [1290.46] Shane: Uh, what happened to drone his life? So during lockdown we had a lot of problems. Um [1297.58] Shane: Technically, we didn't have a lot of problems to start with we were sewed out in a couple of days when lockdown happened when it [1302.3] Shane: First happened we I can I just couldn't get enough stock fast enough [1307.58] Shane: For people and then we had all this, uh, and we thought great, you know, this is brilliant [1312.78] Shane: This is what we needed in lockdown people were at home people were bored. They just want to get on build some drones [1318.22] Shane: um [1319.34] Shane: And then like I said, we were sewed out on big items small items everything and I was ordering more [1325.5] Shane: And then about a month later we I just broke up one morning. I just thought [1332.08] Shane: um [1333.28] Shane: I didn't think anything. I looked at my phone and I had [1336.48] Shane: paypal claim [1338.96] Shane: I just thought that's a bit weird and then I looked at it and it was like nearly 900 pound [1344.08] Shane: Because it was somebody that had ordered [1346.48] Shane: uh [1347.68] Shane: pair of goggles and a [1349.76] Shane: Air unit that's a package there, but they were like 8 9 9 wasn't they for for the v2s and an air unit or something [1356.24] Shane: or two air units and a v2s something like that and um [1361.2] Shane: I didn't think nothing. I put all the evidence in just carried on [1364.96] Shane: um, and the next day another one came in [1368.16] Shane: And they were all all the big items that were sewed over lockdown started getting [1372.96] Shane: uh paypal claims on them and it turns out it was all [1376.64] Shane: card fraud people [1378.4] Shane: Spending money on other people's cards. They didn't know about because paypal just [1383.12] Shane: Gave them their money back [1384.88] Shane: Straight away took it off us [1387.2] Shane: And we never got the product back [1389.84] Shane: Um, and we never got any conversation for it either [1393.28] Shane: So we just we lost the product [1395.76] Shane: We lost the money that we paid for the product and then we lost the money for the sale of the product [1399.92] Shane: So for every like 900 pound of goggles that went out the door [1403.68] Shane: Are you insured for that? [1405.68] Shane: Sorry, were you insured for any of that? Well, we had we had uh merchant insurance [1411.92] Shane: But paypal for the merchant [1414.08] Stephen: Oh god [1415.28] Shane: So there was always a way they were going to regal out of it. Yeah, even though, you know, they come to you and they say [1421.52] Shane: Can you provide as proof of the order? [1424.4] Stephen: And there's never quite enough [1425.28] Shane: Invoice the shipping the tracking and the tracking it's been delivered and it's all done for the same address and you go. Yes [1431.04] Shane: And they still give the money back to the customer [1434.32] Shane: Um, so we were just losing money kind of like so every like 900 pounds you were probably [1441.52] Shane: Time you cut all your losses and all the rest of it you were probably 2000 pound out of pocket just for a set of goggles [1448.16] Shane: um [1449.12] Shane: Because paypal would charge you 100 and as a business with paypal paypal would charge you like 130 pound [1456.46] Shane: Administration charged for doing that per transaction [1460.48] Shane: it was [1461.92] Shane: Stupid and it just kept going and it just kept going and going and going and going and going and going [1466.56] Stephen: How does that even work because if it's card fraud like you're not touching that card [1472.08] Stephen: It's that's all paypal [1474.16] Curry: I think the problem is that paypal don't [1477.04] Curry: um [1478.48] Curry: Work under any of the normal banking rules we have in the uk. They are their own law [1483.44] Curry: Yeah, they do what they like and you can do nothing about it christ. That's awful [1488.32] Shane: Yeah, and it just spiraled out of a control. And so there was that that was a major hit there was a point where [1495.28] Shane: After a lot then I injected a lot of my money back into drone [1498.16] Shane: It's like to get stuck in and see if we can recover it and say I did pick up [1501.68] Shane: I wasn't able to buy in big amounts of big items [1505.68] Shane: Because I don't know if you know, it's been never really did anything along the way goggles [1509.92] Shane: um [1511.12] Shane: You know the big expensive stuff because we just can't afford to but we could get escs flight controllers and motors and receivers and [1518.0] Shane: All the all the all the ethics and tbs stuff in [1522.32] Shane: But we just can't get the big stuff because there was just we just lost so much money [1528.24] Shane: um [1529.28] Shane: and then I think [1530.96] Shane: that I think the nail in the coffin [1533.76] Shane: And it really was the point where [1537.6] Shane: Other than that we and it's very hard to say this but we did have [1542.64] Shane: a lot of [1544.8] Shane: dishonest customers [1547.12] Shane: And I think that was nailing the coffin for me and that's why I closed it [1550.24] Shane: So I'll give you a promise. I'm not going to say any names [1552.64] Shane: Um, so I had a customer once who bought [1556.0] Shane: Um, I very I I've remembered this so much because he absolutely screamed on the phone at me about it [1562.4] Shane: About warranty and stuff. So he bought a set of apex motors [1567.12] Shane: Success apex motors the purple and black ones. They're beautiful [1572.24] Shane: And we shipped them out they were delivered he built them we put money he put them on his drone [1576.96] Shane: Uh [1578.64] Shane: And then he flew it 80 mile an hour into lamppost then did the bell of the motor [1587.04] Shane: It gets on the phone to me screaming on the phone to me [1590.56] Shane: This is under warranty that you should be able to take more than one crash [1593.04] Shane: And i'm like you just tell me you hit a lamppost at 80 mile an hour. So [1597.04] Shane: Um, I can't that's not warranty. No manufacturer in the world is going to give you warranty on that [1601.68] Stephen: Yeah, you don't buy something hit it with a hammer and then get the warranty. Yeah [1605.36] Stephen: I thought this tv fell out the window and it broke [1608.88] Curry: Yeah, we need one [1610.0] Shane: I said to myself that's like going to a car dealer taking out a brand new car driving [1614.4] Shane: A model on their own raffling it around the lamppost and tell them it's it's it's under warranty [1619.76] Shane: Um, and he absolutely screamed on the phone at me about it. And I said, sorry, look I can't I can ask the question to [1626.96] Stephen: Small business where you are that close to your customer, which is a great thing for customers who [1632.0] Stephen: value you and and and like the small business but [1636.08] Stephen: For people who take the piss. It's a great thing as well and they can get away with it [1640.0] Shane: Yeah [1640.64] Shane: Because I refused to give him his money back. I said like, you know, it is what it is [1643.84] Shane: I can ask apex for a warranty claim if you want, but they're gonna say no [1649.28] Shane: And he's like, oh [1650.8] Shane: Anyways, we put the phone down and I go to bed the very next morning. He put a paypal claim in as item not described [1657.84] Shane: And he got his money back anyway [1660.0] Shane: Jesus [1661.2] Curry: It's kind of nice that paypal on the the side of the consumer. But when it's ridiculous [1666.96] Shane: Yeah on the consumer side. Yeah, they move but as [1670.48] Stephen: No, ironically the only time I came back from paypal was a drone [1674.96] Stephen: My first drone that I ordered from banggood that never arrived [1678.48] Stephen: I put in a claim with paypal and they were like, oh no, it says it was delivered [1682.72] Stephen: And I never got it. Yeah, I've got the claim back. So yeah, uh, apparently great if you want to do fraud [1687.76] Stephen: But if you actually lose something not good [1691.44] Shane: Yeah, I think that morning that I you know, I sat down with a friend I said that you know, this is uh [1697.12] Shane: This is costing us more than we're making out of this now [1700.4] Shane: Um, because we don't we don't we don't make anything off the youtube channel [1704.32] Shane: um [1705.52] Shane: The numbers aren't big enough are they so [1707.84] Shane: um [1709.84] Shane: So we I mean even though we you know the night we had steel on [1713.2] Shane: You know [1713.52] Shane: We had a couple of thousand views or a couple of thousand viewers that night, which was amazing [1719.28] Shane: the first time I ever felt nervous on a [1722.08] Shane: Hosting a live stream because there were so many people behind the other side that you couldn't see and I was like [1728.0] Jack: This is a bit much. Um, but and and people still complain even though it's free content [1734.16] Stephen: And yeah, yeah, you're like but on the great youtube landscape [1737.6] Stephen: Like someone just has to do the most facile dumb thing [1741.2] Stephen: If they're an influencer and they've got like a bunch of kids following them and all of a sudden [1745.44] Stephen: They'll get a couple of million views [1747.04] Stephen: So you can try really hard to put like solid content in there takes a bunch of research and a bunch of time [1753.44] Stephen: And planning but yeah, it's uh [1756.64] Shane: I think the most views i've ever seen on a drone video is is uh on tiktok [1760.56] Shane: There's a guy on the back of like a pino ferry with his mavic mini [1764.8] Shane: And he kind of arms it and takes it off where the the ferry is at speed [1769.12] Shane: And then because the wind it just takes off and it's kind of he's on the back of the ferries [1773.84] Shane: To kind of land straight down into the wake of the of the ferry [1777.36] Shane: But it's like millions of laughing emojis or whatever on it [1781.68] Shane: Um, so he clearly got the cost of his drone back for a tiktok [1786.32] Jack: Did he really though? [1788.32] Jack: Because you have to [1790.0] Jack: Like the numbers are ridiculous on that [1793.04] Jack: And you have to be monetized [1796.0] Shane: Yeah [1796.88] Shane: so I put um, I don't know I don't remember so [1800.56] Shane: Back when we were doing drone assignment. I used to do all sorts of silly posts on instagram [1805.12] Shane: About products and stuff and I don't remember I designed them three resin printed moon boots the fingers [1813.76] Shane: All the finger dancing stuff [1815.76] Shane: So i've i've managed to put one of them. I put one of them yesterday on tiktok just as a like a [1821.68] Shane: Like a flashback [1823.28] Shane: overnight nearly 900 views [1826.24] Jack: What no way I remember [1830.0] Shane: I've hit the one of um [1831.68] Shane: The one I put up was the one with michael jackson with literally with my fingers are standing still like this [1835.92] Shane: They had like glitter sleeves on with the moon boots [1839.04] Shane: I just kind of did the lean [1840.8] Shane: Like michael jackson does like moonwalking lean with the music over the top [1844.32] Shane: But i put it on tiktok last night like because you're not known to view one night [1849.12] Jack: I'm not on tiktok. I still remember it [1852.4] Curry: Tiktok works in a in a weird way according to my daughter who's young enough to be on tiktok [1857.84] Curry: PS if you're an adult on tiktok, you may need help [1860.64] Curry: Um, she tells me that if you put a video on and it's your first video [1865.84] Curry: Then tiktok pushed that out to loads of places to try and [1870.08] Curry: Get you to stay on there and I think it's possibly the same if you come back after a long period [1874.32] Curry: It's like lots of people gonna watch so come back come back start posting regularly sort of thing [1879.44] Shane: It's not it's not my first video on tiktok at all. I put some real random rubbish out on tiktok [1886.0] Shane: Maybe it's your first time back in a while though [1889.6] Curry: Oh, I don't know about that, uh, oh your regular place from tiktok you may have a problem [1897.84] Shane: Did see fran will say to me i'm too old for tiktok [1901.04] Shane: She'll say she'll tell me i'm too old for tiktok. However, she will watch tiktok, but she watches it through instagram reels [1908.96] Shane: because people on instagram just take tiktok videos and repost them on instagram reels and then say i'm [1914.08] Curry: I'm too into tiktok. But occasionally it's just randomly boom scroll on instagram. It's in the same old crap. Yeah [1920.64] Shane: Yeah, it's the same thing. I'm just like you might just go on tiktok. It's the same thing, but it's [1925.76] Shane: Fair source on tiktok and then [1927.92] Shane: Repay, and she wouldn't have it. She wouldn't have it to be [1931.52] Shane: But yeah, she says i'm too old for tiktok [1934.4] Jack: Do you know what skibbity means? [1936.88] Jack: No [1939.2] Stephen: I [1941.2] Stephen: I've tried to explain on brain rot and i'm glad i'm not part of that. I just wrote in general [1949.04] Shane: You know what tiktok is best for don't you? [1952.32] Shane: It's when you're sat on the loo. That's it. That's all I use it for is i'm sat on the loo and i've just [1959.44] Stephen: Can you just read the news there's like that's that's where i watch youtube and it pays you [1964.88] Curry: A big video there and stay far too long [1968.56] Shane: Yeah, you get up and your legs are dead and got two round red mark marks on your legs [1974.24] Shane: Book the sink almost fall over [1979.2] Jack: Sometimes I wonder should I even bother leaving the toilet? That's a [1984.32] Jack: That's a different element [1986.4] Shane: Sometimes I forget to leave the toilet [1988.96] Shane: Way after i've finished because i'm so engrossed of what's going on with my phone [1992.4] Stephen: I mean, that's what tiktok want you to do probably [1994.72] Stephen: They're gonna start selling like chairs with toilets on to increase tiktok usage [1998.96] Stephen: Because they know when you're on the toilet you'll start watching tiktok. It'll be like a pavlovian response [2003.92] Stephen: To the toilets everywhere [2006.16] Jack: Right this let's move on [2010.0] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only [2016.72] Frank: Censored to please the itunes people hosted on the internet forwarded through to your podcast provider [2021.52] Frank: Downloaded playing on your device and is now playing in your ears all. Thanks to our patreons [2027.28] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits [2030.72] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com [2033.76] Frank: Let's drone out [2035.52] Jack: What's the coolest thing you've done now you've started the drone filming business? [2042.24] Shane: um [2043.12] Shane: So last night I missed [2046.56] Shane: my big [2048.08] Shane: first [2049.12] Shane: red carpet premiere in london [2052.4] Shane: um [2053.2] Shane: There was a film at premiere premiere last night in lester square cinema [2057.44] Shane: And they had a whole big red carpet [2060.24] Shane: thing, um, and I missed it i'm [2063.36] Shane: You're important for that now [2065.2] Shane: No [2067.44] Shane: I'm getting ready to go away again. So i'm get i've got drones everywhere here [2071.04] Shane: This is my office. They've got drones everywhere here and i'm packing trying to pack kit and do carne's and stuff [2076.16] Shane: Um, so I just I couldn't because i'm based in plimoth [2079.6] Shane: I could just couldn't take the time to do four hour one hour hours up [2083.68] Shane: To watch a film that's my life, mate [2086.24] Shane: Yeah for two hours in to drive four and a half hours back in one day [2090.96] Stephen: I'll put both ways [2093.12] Shane: So so last year I did um four horror films [2099.52] Shane: Um, and the one that premiered last night was peter pan neverland [2103.68] Shane: Um, so some lovely director called called scott. Um [2110.72] Shane: Who's brilliant? He [2113.04] Shane: Has worked out all these wonk disney characters are coming out of copyright. Oh, yes [2118.24] Shane: And they're very making horror films [2122.0] Stephen: Someone did a winny the poo thing that was just yes [2123.84] Stephen: It was then we're saying oh i'm winny the poo in really bad outfits and then murdering a bunch of people. Yeah, so [2129.6] Shane: um, the first one I did with them was peter pan [2132.72] Shane: and it was [2134.0] Shane: I I don't like horror movies. I can't stand horror movies, but i'd like so I don't like horror movies in the way that [2141.04] Shane: You know if it's sore [2143.28] Shane: Or you know just outright gore [2146.08] Shane: But I love sci-fi horror. So like aliens or like predator things like that. I love all that stuff event horizon mother [2153.68] Stephen: Oh, yeah event horizon classic. Yeah, love it. Love all that but [2159.68] Jack: Everyone forgets it [2161.68] Jack: Everyone forgets event horizon. I'm sorry. I'm sorry [2167.04] Jack: And i'm throwing my bananas at you i'm sorry [2173.36] Curry: We went to see at the cinema [2174.96] Curry: The previous showing was just on someone came out and vomited and I was like, okay this this might be worth watching [2183.6] Jack: I would have started masturbating [2187.2] Curry: Goes without saying if you're in the same one else would have vomited [2192.64] Jack: Yeah [2194.32] Jack: They want to see real horror [2198.0] Shane: The problem is is that real horror is it's like it doesn't look real but it's on set [2202.4] Stephen: It looks dreadful [2204.0] Shane: But this looks like a bunch of sticky sauce flying everywhere. Yeah, exactly that so we did so we did we did this peter pan and [2212.32] Shane: um, I did [2214.38] Shane: cinematic normal kind of a mavic three will inspire three [2219.34] Shane: cinematic shots [2221.04] Shane: and then um [2222.72] Shane: I said to scott [2224.96] Shane: They were trying to film [2227.2] Shane: Uh, the girl running down a corridor. It was set in an old abandoned school, but and it looked a bit like harry potter kind of world [2233.84] Shane: That kind of size building and they were trying to film [2237.28] Shane: this first person view shot [2239.76] Shane: With the the camera running down and uh chasing the girl with like numerous amounts of rubbish all over the floor [2247.04] Shane: uh, generally body parts from other victims [2250.48] Shane: and um [2251.84] Shane: I I said to the I said I said i've got i said i've got a drone with me that's [2257.6] Shane: You know protective propellers and we can stick a [2260.56] Shane: We can stick a commodal on it and stuff. Basically. It was a five inch cinewoop. Um [2266.08] Shane: Qav pro lumineer one [2269.52] Shane: Um, I think we can stick a red on that [2272.08] Shane: And a light or whatever and we'll we'll use the drone down the corridor with this school and he was just like [2277.84] Shane: Yeah, okay, let's give it a go and literally it was just like just a director or dp [2283.76] Shane: sorry [2284.96] Jack: director or dp [2286.96] Shane: Uh both they normally were like glued at the hip those two [2290.64] Shane: Uh, and the director was a guy called vince night. Um [2296.4] Shane: But he's he's also worked with um, I think he's worked in top gear [2302.24] Shane: As well, um [2304.16] Shane: so yeah, so we created this shot and he was just like [2307.36] Shane: Well, that works that's great and the next minute i'm just being used everywhere [2311.36] Shane: Um, so and then I get a call back to go go and do another film call another horror film and so I do popeye [2320.88] Stephen: Nice [2322.16] Stephen: Are these real when you say you don't like horror? [2324.88] Stephen: These sound almost like parody rather than horror when you say peter pan and popeye and things. Oh, no [2330.0] Shane: They're like full on how many people can you kill? [2333.52] Shane: Um, all right in one movie and they're actually doing another film this year [2338.32] Shane: They're in the middle of planning. It's called puna verse [2341.44] Shane: Um, so it's it's the third it's the third film [2346.24] Shane: From from winnie the poo. It's the third. It's it's the third one [2350.8] Shane: And they're gonna go for the they said they're gonna go for the world record of the most [2355.36] Shane: Uh kills in a film. Oh [2358.08] Shane: That's but it's not [2359.68] Shane: Splatter. Yeah, so it has to be it has to be [2363.12] Shane: like decapitation [2364.96] Shane: Or something from the insides needs to be put on the outsides or limbs being removed because I said to myself [2370.24] Shane: Surely your own batter with hot shots where he's just doing a count kill with a gun. Yeah [2377.44] Shane: And he's oh no there's guinness book of rules of the states it has to be [2380.88] Shane: Literally decapitation or something from your insides on your outsides [2385.2] Shane: um, right [2386.64] Shane: But it's a lot of people [2388.24] Curry: They haven't had from mickey mouse in steamboat willy because that's out of copyright [2391.76] Stephen: But just that particular version of mickey mouse you could use that he can talk now because we hit another milestone in public domain [2397.84] Stephen: so you you got um [2400.08] Stephen: The ability to talk I think and uh, was it [2403.92] Stephen: Bluto the dog came in public domain. There are a couple that drops at the start of this year [2408.56] Shane: I'm sure spot does not need any help [2410.88] Shane: In creating these homes [2412.88] Stephen: There's a few things that came out in public domain because it obviously it's it [2417.28] Stephen: It it's just a moving target now. So you're going to be seeing all of the disney bat catalog year by year [2424.56] Stephen: Start to pop up in in public domain. So yeah, it's been moved to extend their copyright [2429.84] Curry: So I think they did. Oh, they they did for a number of years. I think they pushed it so hard [2436.16] Stephen: Well, they didn't just run out they they twisted the law so hard. They got a bad reputation from um [2442.3] Stephen: lawmakers for basically [2444.24] Stephen: taking the mickey [2447.28] Stephen: Um, and and they've got we've effectively stymied their ability to do anything more in future [2452.08] Stephen: There's a couple of videos on youtube you can watch but they've pretty much twisted copyright law to breaking point in order to hold [2458.72] Stephen: off their assets under perpetual copyright and they got like it got up to almost a hundred years, I think but [2464.72] Stephen: A hundred years isn't forever. So you're seeing stuff from the the 20s start to pop up again in public domain [2472.0] Shane: Because we did we did we did the type off we did pickle it as well [2475.44] Shane: We've done pickle it last year and the last one we filmed was pinocchio [2481.2] Shane: Um, they made this wooden, uh robotic [2485.84] Shane: like animatronic kind of pinocchio [2489.12] Shane: um, and i'm not even going to tell you how he kills people with his nose, but it's [2494.08] Shane: Sounds like it's quite terrible [2497.68] Jack: It doesn't sharpen it and stab me [2500.64] Jack: It's got like an electric pencil sharp now [2507.44] Shane: But yeah, I mean I don't know I mean peanut power was the best one I think [2511.36] Shane: Is was is the most realistic one? [2514.56] Shane: um [2516.24] Shane: But working on horror films is is is working on night shift [2520.64] Shane: Because everything's filmed from we start work at four o'clock in the afternoon. You finish at six in the morning [2526.08] Shane: Everything's in the dark [2528.08] Shane: either sunset or the dark sort of thing [2530.88] Shane: and in this school where [2533.28] Shane: We had two rooms in the school one [2535.44] Shane: Well, we had a couple of rooms one was the kit room [2537.28] Shane: One was uh, like like a canteen room because they put catering on and there was makeup and wardrobe rooms and stuff [2543.2] Shane: When I was trying to go back to the kit room to get playful batteries and stuff [2547.12] Shane: There was just body parts laying on the floor that was falling over because you could already see anything [2551.92] Shane: You know, like i'm like i'll step on that and you kind of look down with a torch and it'll just be a foot [2556.24] Shane: Just sat on the floor and it's just like a scale of living graph at me every day [2560.24] Shane: I knew it was there but every day i'll just put a torch down to see if somebody else is limb on the floor [2566.96] Stephen: You're enjoying your work [2571.6] Shane: Um, yeah, other than that I think the other the only other coolest thing i've ever done is so I am um [2580.24] Shane: I am sam fender's drone pilot [2584.67] Shane: I go everywhere with sam fender on tour and fender who's sam fender. Oh [2591.71] Shane: So sam fender is um [2595.95] Shane: Is a jordy singer, um [2600.59] Shane: I see when I got when I first got asked as a job I went [2604.27] Shane: Who sam fender? I have no idea who sam fender is and when you look up his songs on on spotify [2610.75] Shane: Or upper music wherever you are [2613.15] Stephen: You'll know them because you would have heard them at some point in your life. It's been in car commercials and stuff and [2618.27] Shane: it's just [2619.79] Shane: In background, I don't know if i'm honest [2623.63] Shane: Um, but I do all these I do all the high area stuff using a mavic 3 and stuff at stadiums for him [2630.59] Shane: Um, but then I also do on stage fpv work for him as well [2634.43] Shane: So we literally get in and out between all the band members on stage circle them [2639.07] Shane: And then go out do sort of crowd surfing [2641.79] Shane: um, and we we're literally live streaming that to the eye mags on the side of the [2647.71] Shane: On side of the stage [2650.51] Shane: And it's actually done [2652.43] Shane: All with this little guy [2654.43] Shane: Oh [2655.47] Shane: We got there. So this is um [2658.43] Shane: It's actually a flywoo [2660.67] Shane: Like pre-built binding fly jobby [2663.55] Shane: Um [2665.63] Shane: Yeah, uh [2666.99] Shane: Is it the fly sense 85? [2669.79] Shane: Oh, yeah, it's 85 [2671.55] Shane: So it's uh, it's on o3 [2674.35] Shane: It's on o3 air unit, um, but it's all naked [2677.79] Shane: So if it sits still on the floor for too long, it does like when I catch fire [2682.03] Shane: I think that's what nick burns review that he was very flattering about it. Yeah, it's utterly brilliant. Um, i've tweaked the tune a little bit [2689.39] Shane: um to my flying sense i've [2692.35] Shane: took off [2693.79] Shane: um [2694.83] Shane: I couldn't buy it with crossfire at the time [2697.95] Shane: so I bought it as uh [2701.07] Shane: an o3 bind and fly [2703.47] Shane: And then took it apart and put a crossfire receiver in it. I still use crossfire and everything because it's [2709.87] Shane: For my something. I just it's tried and tested [2712.75] Shane: I've never had a problem with it and in an [2715.87] Stephen: In a high wi-fi interference area they're playing to if you're working, I guess don't you you can always turn around and go why trappy? [2722.75] Shane: Yeah [2724.43] Shane: Yeah, I mean you do from it's for me and this is and this is probably only for me [2730.35] Shane: The the receivers are quite expensive aren't they like 35 quid a go. I know it wasn't stock either [2736.11] Shane: no, um [2738.27] Jack: But you get diversity receiver and you know, there's two antennas. No, it's only the ones [2745.79] Shane: That's the o3 [2748.35] Shane: So this one's just got a normal one on it. Um [2751.31] Shane: But I I don't know why I just can't put my faith in an express LRS receiver that costs eight quid [2757.63] Shane: Yeah, well, there's a [2759.63] Stephen: Quid that's the trouble. It's a bit of a lottery, you know [2762.35] Stephen: Yeah, we probably make their own I flight make their own and some brands can make really good motors and frames [2768.27] Stephen: But not necessarily great receivers. So yeah, there's a lot of reading required [2773.55] Shane: but there is in [2775.87] Shane: Um in san fender's online content there is fpv footage crowd surfing around [2782.27] Shane: um [2783.95] Shane: new cassow's [2785.55] Shane: football stadium [2786.75] Shane: Um is st. James's park [2789.71] Shane: And there's high area of stuff on there as well. Um, which has all come from me [2794.67] Shane: um [2796.59] Shane: And one of the shots I took with the mavic 3 [2800.67] Shane: Is actually going to be his album cover when it comes out this month [2803.55] Stephen: What camera do you have on there? Are you carrying like a full-blown gopro or are you filming? [2808.99] Stephen: On on the flywheel you've got that [2813.39] Shane: Wow, okay. Okay. So yeah, so we um [2818.11] Shane: Connect the gobble straight out to um rc pro [2821.39] Stephen: Oh, wow [2822.51] Shane: And then and then they're running that from hdmi through an sti converter [2827.15] Stephen: Oh, wow, and then it goes straight out. I just always assumed that o3 was good for flying in a bit of casual [2832.83] Stephen: Larking around. I just yeah, i've never expected to [2836.43] Shane: Thought everyone would be snooty about it and sort of no. No, they loved it. Um, could you get 1080p out of your rc pro? [2843.87] Shane: I hope for your goggles [2846.43] Shane: and [2847.31] Shane: This is so this is the thing production crews [2849.79] Shane: You can turn up with all these cameras and everything in think I can record up to 4k 6k [2855.07] Shane: Whatever you want to do 120 frames per second and they'll all turn around to you and go [2859.87] Shane: Can we have 1080p 25, please? [2864.11] Shane: Don't matter where you go. Do you mind what kit you turn up with 1080 25? [2868.91] Shane: Um and like so the camera you're watching me on now [2872.03] Shane: So since drone is live when I haven't had a webcam or a digital slar to stream off [2878.75] Shane: um [2880.11] Shane: For years because i've just never needed to have them. So i'm actually using one of my production cameras now [2885.63] Shane: To do this and i've had to scramble around all day trying to get cables to get it into my PC [2891.07] Jack: Oh [2893.07] Jack: Sorry, the effort he comes he does to come on this show [2897.23] Jack: I know like let's talk about pooing and [2902.51] Jack: Oh my god [2905.71] Shane: So this camera does not have a lot of focus because it's not designed to locked [2910.59] Shane: It's in the right place [2913.31] Jack: I'm still on a c9 [2916.27] Jack: 2020 like [2918.99] Jack: Yeah [2920.51] Shane: Yeah, so this camera is designed to have a proper professional focus color [2925.23] Shane: And because I don't I can't employ a focus color for tonight [2929.23] Shane: Um, i'm not sure I should have put the effort out and got one really [2933.55] Jack: Um one question i've always wanted about lean back. Are you ready? [2939.39] Jack: Have you assumed conditioned your wall [2943.07] Jack: About what? [2945.79] Jack: There's some patterning on the back is it fine [2948.35] Shane: sound no, so [2949.71] Shane: um frown made this [2952.19] Shane: so basically she's [2954.27] Shane: uh designed the pattern made [2957.15] Shane: and uh [2958.59] Shane: the pattern is [2960.19] Shane: Tapped to the wall, but the the pattern is two by one timber [2965.71] Shane: What [2967.31] Shane: And then painted the whole thing [2969.79] Shane: Um, it's like a dark charcoal color [2973.39] Stephen: It's cool back when the light just breaks across it [2976.99] Stephen: Yeah [2977.95] Shane: Um, I think I can show you [2982.16] Stephen: For our audio listeners. There is an interesting diagonal arrangement of lines [2987.36] Jack: Catching some relief light behind chain. I thought it was like done with foam and stuff to lie [2993.76] Jack: So you didn't have a light flat wall. So you could [2997.12] Jack: Yeah, have you never heard that right sound conditioning? It's like, you know [3002.48] Shane: Yeah [3005.84] Shane: Fran designed that and she made it and painted it [3008.72] Curry: Nice. I've got a strong related question. Go on. So [3014.16] Curry: Obviously without revealing any any details that you don't want to how do you know? [3019.28] Curry: uh [3020.32] Curry: Someone going into this sort of field that you're setting your rate correctly [3025.04] Curry: because I presume it's a day rate you you do or something that's like a shot thing and [3030.08] Curry: do you ever get worried that like [3032.24] Curry: somebody might just [3033.68] Curry: Like undercut you if they don't know like their new pilot or is it all about the reputation of what we've done before? [3042.08] Shane: Um, so, um [3044.72] Shane: I mean, yeah, everything I work on is day rate [3047.68] Shane: So I have a day rate for my services. Then you have a you also have another rate for your kit hire [3054.48] Shane: So even though you're taking your kit with you [3057.28] Shane: You need to charge the production company a daily rate for you to be using your own kit [3062.32] Stephen: All right. So it's like they want it broken down on the [3066.64] Stephen: On on the purchase order as like person plus equipment [3071.04] Shane: Yeah, so normally you would put it in as day rate as yourself [3074.72] Shane: And then you put down kit and insurance and that's a day rate as well [3078.96] Shane: um [3080.16] Shane: But you know, you're you're going to profit off both by all means [3084.24] Shane: um [3084.88] Shane: and [3086.4] Shane: So the rate can really really depend on who your client is [3091.44] Shane: There's of course, there's always the fear of [3094.96] Shane: Um somebody undercutting you but that's always going to be a chance you take some companies some products and companies are really good [3101.84] Shane: and they'll come back to you and say [3105.28] Shane: We want to go with you but we've had cheaper quotes [3108.32] Shane: And you can you can kind of [3110.8] Shane: You know haggard around a little bit, but it's very rare that happens [3114.72] Shane: um [3115.84] Shane: if you're trying to beat [3118.24] Shane: Somebody that's local to you. So say there was a job in Plymouth [3122.96] Shane: um where i'm based and [3125.36] Shane: you've got [3126.88] Shane: A guy down the road with his mavic mini. He's willing to do it for 200 pound for the day [3132.4] Shane: And then i'll be like you let him have it [3135.44] Shane: You know, it's it's not worth your time [3137.84] Shane: Not with the kit that you're using and then [3141.28] Shane: The insurance you're paying to do it [3144.4] Shane: um [3146.32] Shane: So yeah, it's kind of [3148.32] Shane: You can be undercut quite a lot [3150.16] Shane: But if it's if it's a big television project, uh production or uh a film production [3156.24] Shane: You don't generally need to worry about it because it will be [3159.68] Shane: You'll be you've been recommended from a previous tv show or somebody else's [3164.88] Shane: Um, and then you can just kind of normally [3168.56] Shane: um [3170.32] Shane: Name your price [3171.92] Shane: The I think the weirdest thing i've ever [3174.88] Shane: Experienced from this hurry trade is that so we don't work [3178.24] Shane: From the beginning of December to the end of February [3183.36] Shane: Nobody works in the tv unless you're um a scriptwriter or production company planning a shoot [3191.6] Shane: Camera camera, I says and drone operators don't [3195.52] Curry: It's just not worth messing with the lighting [3198.0] Curry: Yeah, we just we're just an extended holiday. It's like we we want more pretty much [3202.24] Curry: Extending it into three months. Is it purely light related or just a habit? [3207.2] Shane: no, I [3208.56] Shane: We um, so it's taken me and fran quite a while to get used to this of not [3213.44] Shane: Of work drying up kind of close to christmas and then getting nothing for like two to three months [3219.6] Shane: Um, which is just bizarre and then when I speak to everybody that i've worked with [3224.96] Shane: so, um [3227.76] Shane: I actually know quite a lot of guys know from top gear production crew and world sailing and all the rest of them [3232.96] Shane: and when I speak to the camera guys and say [3235.76] Shane: You know, you got any work what's going on? Then they're like i'm on holiday [3239.6] Shane: Every goes on holiday of a christmas nine times out of ten. Everybody works in tv are out of the country for christmas [3245.68] Shane: Yeah, i think it's a lovely girl who I who was the production manager for the peter pan stuff [3250.72] Shane: season [3252.24] Shane: Couple of weeks ago and said oh, you've got any work coming in and she went i'm i'm in the philippines for a month [3260.0] Shane: Every every just takes the christmas off and just goes [3263.36] Stephen: Places very sensible. It's the bizarre thing ever in the summer. Are you just working straight through? [3269.76] Shane: Yeah, summer summer is crazy. So that's blipside [3274.24] Shane: Yeah, so this so last year in the summer, um [3280.96] Shane: I did there was one section. I did a I flew out gatwick and I did a week in [3288.3] Shane: Slovenia [3290.08] Shane: Um, and then straight after traveled down and did a [3294.32] Shane: week in carasia [3297.28] Shane: And then flew home [3299.6] Shane: on a saturday night [3301.28] Shane: Drove from gatwick back to plimoth [3304.56] Shane: Um unpacked all my kit put all my clothes on the washing machine fran [3308.56] Shane: Obviously washed my clothes and stuff repacked my kit [3312.0] Shane: and then the very next day [3314.0] Shane: With fran drove back to gatwick and flew out to italy for another week away there and it's you know [3320.08] Shane: You come back and you find that when you're on shoots and you're away [3323.6] Shane: People will be phoning in say are you available for the next couple of weeks do this this this and this is it's bizarre [3329.04] Shane: So next week we're we're going out to italy next week [3332.64] Shane: um [3334.24] Shane: It's not work related next week. We're actually going out to buy a house [3337.76] Shane: Um out there and and I come home [3342.0] Shane: Sort of next friday and then sunday i'm off to guitar [3346.0] Shane: Um to start doing filming for formula e [3350.48] Stephen: Yeah, yeah [3353.04] Shane: um [3354.96] Shane: So yeah, it's um, it's actually the works actually started off earlier this year than it did last year, but last year I was [3361.6] Shane: Come sort of mid february i'm climbing off the walls being utterly and totally bored [3367.6] Shane: um [3368.56] Shane: And thinking you're worried about when the next work. No, when's the next work coming? [3372.72] Shane: And it's just started a month earlier this week because as soon as i'm back from guitar i'm at home for like two days [3378.4] Shane: Then I go back to palma and I because I work I also do the aerial photography for um [3383.6] Shane: World sailing so I do all the regasses over europe [3387.52] Shane: Um, so i've got to palma for two weeks and it's home and it's back [3390.32] Shane: It's in netherlands and it's home and it's and a spain and it's home [3395.04] Stephen: Do you have to land drones? [3397.12] Stephen: Flying off the shore are you out there on a boat having to land onto a boat when you're out? [3401.44] Shane: So we take off and land from an eight meter rib [3404.32] Shane: Wow, that's challenging. Um [3407.12] Shane: It can it can be I mean it's only it's only on mavic three [3411.2] Shane: But nonetheless, you know, you're still going to catch that [3415.36] Shane: um [3417.28] Shane: And um, they go for who net [3421.04] Shane: There's there's a [3423.68] Shane: I'm not gonna lie. There's a couple in the bottom of the sea, you know in palma bay if anybody writes them [3428.8] Shane: There's a three three cine there's a couple of three cine's in the bottom of the [3433.92] Shane: so last year we went out to palma and um, actually if you look on my youtube channel [3439.68] Shane: and cine drone uk youtube channel, there is a [3442.64] Shane: um [3444.24] Shane: An example of the world sailing show that we do [3448.0] Shane: Um, and then just in the opening 10 clips you can see how rough the sea is [3453.52] Shane: We were we were in three and a half to four meter swells [3458.32] Stephen: Two and a half miles out. How are you not chucking your guts out? [3462.8] Stephen: And you're not even looking at the horizon. You're like looking at a video screen worse possible situation [3467.52] Shane: The thing is that so the the rib that i'm on is actually moving as well because on the front [3473.36] Shane: I have a camera operator with me and on the front of the rib is a gimbalized drone [3478.56] Shane: Sorry gimbalized camera arm, which is carrying like an fs6 inside it completely encaged [3484.56] Shane: But they stripped it naked [3486.56] Shane: And put it inside like a cone and it's watertight and they put it on a three-axis gimbal on the front of the boat [3492.88] Shane: So once the drones up in the in the regatta starts the race starts [3496.72] Shane: The the rib is actually going up wind with the boats [3500.8] Shane: And then they come back downwind with it as well [3502.56] Shane: So i'm droning the air flying tracking trying to pick out different numbers of sailors [3506.88] Shane: They that the director is asking for and so is the guy desperately trying not to hurl at the same time [3512.8] UNKNOWN: Yeah [3513.84] Shane: And i'm kind of looked down and i'm just like oh my god a couple of times i've got close to being sick [3519.44] Shane: but [3521.04] Shane: Last year in palma last march [3523.28] Shane: Um, you know, it's really rough when [3527.28] Shane: The guy that came out with me so the first day out there my director came and said that you're my only cameraman here today [3532.64] Shane: You're my only asset on the water or the the other camera company who has um [3538.72] Shane: All the gimbalized cameras and on the onshore cameras. They're running a day late [3542.8] Shane: So everything's on new today get out there and i was out there for like nine hours [3547.52] Shane: Record as much as you can and this these waves were huge [3552.16] Shane: and um [3554.16] Shane: I said I need somebody to catch the drone [3556.08] Shane: I can't keep my balance on this boat and catch the drone at the same time and control it [3560.0] Shane: It's just impossible. So the game a guy a lovely guy called [3563.92] Shane: Will and he actually works for world sailing. He used to be [3568.8] Shane: uh an ilkah sailor [3571.68] Shane: So he's used to sailing [3573.28] Shane: He got sick that day and was thrown over the side of the boat [3577.2] Shane: So an actual sailor got sick in a boat in palma bay and I was just like I can't watch him being sick i'm gonna throw up [3586.56] Shane: But we got to the point where trying to catch the drone was impossible so we were waiting for the rib to rise to the top of [3592.8] Shane: the wave [3593.84] Shane: I mean grab it to come up to meet the mavic to grab it rather than bring the mavic down. Oh my word [3600.32] Stephen: Kudos man around with applause for your effort to drone come [3604.8] Stephen: some epic work [3606.88] Jack: Right. Unfortunately, we've run out of time [3610.32] Jack: There was there was one question if you can answer it in two minutes [3615.6] Jack: It was what advice would you give to anyone getting into this what qualifications you need? [3622.16] Jack: Like what what do you think helped get land you the get you started? [3626.96] Shane: Just quick qualification quickly then uh qualifications need you need to get as many as possible [3631.92] Shane: so give you an idea so I have [3634.32] Shane: uh caa a2 I have gbc osc and then for the eus I've got easa a1 a2 a3 and luc [3644.4] Shane: um and um [3647.36] Shane: Yeah, I mean the kit [3649.36] Shane: Is the problem with the kit is off the chart the amount of money you'll spend on kit is ridiculous [3653.92] Shane: But you need to price it accordingly [3655.92] Shane: Um and just get yourself out there. I don't really think instagram and youtube do you justice when it comes to getting a job [3662.16] Stephen: Um, and you're saying earlier don't obsess about the camera tech [3666.24] Shane: Yeah [3667.76] Shane: You'll be surprised how much directed people actually take a gopro [3671.6] Shane: and an o3 air unit [3673.68] Shane: um [3674.88] Shane: Without any complaints whatsoever because nine times ten you'll turn up and just go all they want is 1080p 25 [3681.44] Shane: Um, so don't worry about 4k [3683.68] Shane: 8k 6k is this not worth it, but you just need to it's hard to get into it [3689.68] Shane: You need to plug away there and it's basically the main thing is is being in the right place at the right time [3695.36] Shane: Is what it takes? [3696.96] Shane: And once that happens once for you [3700.4] Shane: The sky's the limits from there [3702.56] Shane: That's the [3703.92] Shane: Awesome. I think it's just a bit really [3706.8] Shane: Yeah, that's great. Um [3708.96] Jack: Thank you [3710.08] Jack: Shane it's been an absolute pleasure. We've i've [3713.44] Jack: I've [3714.64] Jack: I knew you've been busy. That's why i'm being in touch and I needed something and i'm glad to reach out and chat to you and [3721.36] Jack: I [3722.4] Jack: I [3723.36] Jack: I knew that i've missed you but chatting to you for an hour [3727.44] Jack: I realized how much of a big hole [3730.32] Jack: like [3731.12] Jack: I had [3732.56] Jack: You and drone his life [3734.56] Jack: Um, you've always got you've always got friends as ldo. We're always here if you need us [3740.72] Shane: Um, but we need we need to do the journey of reunion on your channel then we need to do it on the on the uh, you know [3745.84] Shane: Uh, get kosie and jab on [3748.0] Shane: That'd be really good stephen [3750.0] Shane: Okay, clearly stephen. Um, but yeah, I think there'll be a lot of fun times if you get if you could hook that up [3754.64] Jack: That'd be good. Yeah, no worries. We can definitely do that. Um, [3759.18] Jack: Unfortunately, that's all we got time for we've been joined by everyone's favorite curry kitten. Goodbye [3764.32] Jack: Uh shane for a drone his life slash cine drone [3767.6] Jack: Goodbye the man with my star stephen. Thanks shane. Now. Thanks our wonderful patreons [3774.88] Jack: And of course like stephen said [3777.36] Jack: Our show would not be able to carry on without our patreons [3781.76] Jack: If you've got a couple of bucks me and co will do a bonus podcast every month [3786.32] Jack: Um, if you can it really helps us out. We really appreciate it. I'll be bright until I fly you've been listed let's drone out [3793.04] Jack: Thank you. Good night [3795.2] Jack: Bye [3796.64] Jack: Bye telemetry loss
