[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to… [14.4] Jack: Carlos Campos! [16.12] Frank: Art Faulkner! [17.84] Frank: Sam Dahmer. [19.68] Frank: On with the show. [20.68] Jack: Hello and welcome, you're listening to Let's Drone Out. [55.98] Jack: Right, we are joined by everyone's favourite, Curry Kitten. [60.34] Jack: Hello! [61.34] Jack: The man with the mustache, Steven. [63.54] Jack: Even hell. [64.54] Jack: Our wonderful guest tonight is Andrew Lyons. [67.22] Jack: Oh yeah, how's it going? [70.1] Jack: And my darling wife, Tony. [73.3] Andrew Lawrence: Boo! [74.3] Jack: No, Bonjour. [75.74] Jack: Bonjour! [76.74] Jack: And I owe your host, Beautelei Fly. [81.74] Jack: Our guest, hello, how are you? [84.98] Jack: We're a new daddy, are we here? [86.74] Jack: Yep. [87.74] Jack: How's that going? [88.74] Andrew Lawrence: Said a little kid, probably like six months, coming up six months now, so not much sleep [94.86] Andrew Lawrence: but quite a life-changing overall. [98.42] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [99.42] Andrew Lawrence: All good? [100.42] Andrew Lawrence: Oh, all good. [102.42] Jack: Yeah, like we were all absolutely stunned that you, we found out you actually listened [109.34] Jack: to us dickheads and I like, we are so sorry. [113.9] Andrew Lawrence: No, no, every time I'm in the like, I don't watch the live stream but I listen to it every [119.5] Andrew Lawrence: time I'm driving in my van, up and down, three and everywhere, like, I don't know. [124.46] Stephen: Oh, you get the clean version? [126.62] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, probably, yes, for the best. [129.3] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [130.3] Andrew Lawrence: I love it, man, there's hardly any drone like shows or podcasts or anything anymore, really, [137.94] Andrew Lawrence: so I don't know. [139.26] Andrew Lawrence: It's hard to survive. [140.26] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [141.26] Andrew Lawrence: It's getting tough. [142.7] Tony: That made ten years talking complete and utter. [147.22] Curry: I remember last time, officially, we were the fourth best but some of those people might [152.74] Tony: have died by now if we got a year since they didn't left. [156.46] Jack: Who wrote that, that we were fourth and best? [160.34] Jack: Maybe we should email them. [161.34] Jack: It was on some blog post or something, wasn't it? [163.78] Jack: Yeah. [164.78] Jack: Can you find that? [165.78] Jack: Can you have a little look-see though and like be like, can you update it because we're [173.18] Jack: we survived our ignorance. [175.14] Stephen: I don't think there's anyone that even really does a drone podcast. [178.34] Stephen: There's YouTube channels that have like regular events, but there's no one that does a podcast [183.46] Stephen: that has numbered episodes. [186.9] Jack: So, Andy, you have been doing some incredible stuff. [192.14] Jack: I wasn't given any show notes, but I hear that you have been chasing around very fast [198.14] Jack: cars with something that looks like a penis. [201.18] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I know I've been doing all the usually like F1 testing. [208.14] Andrew Lawrence: So, usually, most of the time in Silverstone and then we go to Bahrain. [214.86] Andrew Lawrence: But this year, it was because they had the big like F1 event in London. [220.74] Andrew Lawrence: Most of the sort of testing and filming was done in Bahrain this year. [226.18] Andrew Lawrence: So, no, it's always good to know quite a lot of pressure and sort of high stakes. [233.42] Andrew Lawrence: And, yeah, just built with one of my friends called Toby, one of these. [241.58] Stephen: It does look like a spaceship based on an existing design or your own? [246.5] Andrew Lawrence: It's a bit of a, I don't know, hybrid of a few, really. [253.3] Andrew Lawrence: It's with, I think he's called Lake Maxabelle, is it? [259.22] Andrew Lawrence: Or similar from South Africa. [262.62] Tony: And then... [263.62] Tony: Did he do a green one of them? [265.9] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [269.74] Andrew Lawrence: That sort of mixed with some of Quadmover's stuff and then the guys from Dutch [276.7] Andrew Lawrence: Drone Gods that did Red Bull. [280.1] Tony: Oh, yeah, they did. [281.9] Stephen: You've got a bunch of different influences from different people. [287.82] Stephen: Could you kind of walk through what influences you took from where when you [291.58] Stephen: were building it out? [292.74] Stephen: Because a lot of people have tried to do similar designs, right? [296.06] Stephen: Oh, yeah. [296.54] Stephen: I think straight lines lead to some for other goals. [299.78] Stephen: Yeah. [300.62] Stephen: We're number two. [302.3] Jack: We're number two. [304.46] Curry: According to this website, which seems very good, 15 Best Drone podcasts, [309.22] Curry: we're now number two. [310.74] Curry: He's gone up. [312.38] Curry: Well, who's telling you the other one? [314.5] Curry: Ask Drone You, whatever that is. [317.62] Curry: Are they still running? [319.66] Tony: Ask Drone You. [322.06] Curry: Well, this is a list from March the 11th, 2025, so... [326.14] Tony: They've got 90,000 Instagram followers. [330.1] Curry: Tony, you're going to have to get on their own influence. [333.82] Curry: Can they read all of those too? [335.98] Curry: Yes, but we have got 71 Twitter followers, which is about 5.7K. [342.3] Stephen: They've been going since 2015. [344.22] Stephen: How come I haven't even heard of them? [345.82] Stephen: Interesting. [346.34] Stephen: Don't think they're going to have none of us either. [348.5] Stephen: Okay. [350.54] Stephen: Sorry, sorry. [351.14] Stephen: Could we get back to Andy? [352.46] Stephen: Andy and his wonderful airframe, all these different people. [356.14] Stephen: And he's been influenced by a whole bunch of things and he's drawn something up [360.62] Stephen: himself there or with a buddy of his. [362.74] Stephen: Could you walk us through kind of what bits you took from where and what [367.26] Stephen: you were trying to build? [368.82] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [369.34] Andrew Lawrence: So, well, Chris Rosser as well released one, but just the fact that you [375.86] Andrew Lawrence: can't change any of the, like, well, the 3D print files aren't accessible [382.42] Andrew Lawrence: to everyone and it always ends up that you need to alter little things such [390.1] Andrew Lawrence: as like the camera angle on these trying to fly, I dunno, it probably goes up to [395.54] Andrew Lawrence: like, well, it can go up to like 70 degree angle and not having like a [402.9] Andrew Lawrence: servo mounted in there so you can take off with a lot shallower camera [407.66] Andrew Lawrence: angle is like a massive thing. [410.1] Andrew Lawrence: So we sort of, um, just, I dunno, took an influence from a lot of, uh, different [417.02] Andrew Lawrence: rockets and then it's culmination of, uh, the mall together, I guess. [423.02] Andrew Lawrence: So did you say you've got a servo and not got servo? [425.34] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I'll take the shell off so you can see the inside of it. [430.06] Jack: There's, um, is it, I'm all right. [431.82] Jack: I'm thinking when you fly that fast, you're on roll switch. [437.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, it's, it feels more like a wing or something, like some sort of plane [443.74] Andrew Lawrence: that like when you go too slow, it feels like you're stalling, if that makes sense. [449.34] Andrew Lawrence: So it always needs to be sort of a reason. [453.58] Andrew Lawrence: Well, when the camera angles, it's all like very dependent on the camera [457.66] Andrew Lawrence: angle, to be honest, when it's a low camera angle, doesn't feel like, uh, I [464.5] Andrew Lawrence: think it's probably just a separation of the camera being so far away from the [468.14] Andrew Lawrence: motors, you know, so high up, like you can fly it with probably 30 degrees and you [473.54] Andrew Lawrence: can do split S's and like loops and stuff fine, but it just feels, I don't know. [480.46] Stephen: Where's the battery and all that? [483.94] Stephen: Innocent. [484.54] Stephen: Yeah. [485.58] Stephen: I mean, how far away from the motors, I'm wondering. [488.7] Jack: You must go through so many of them. [491.74] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, it depends how you fly in and what speeds really. [495.7] Stephen: Regular 6S pack or anything nuts? [498.34] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, that's 8S. [500.06] Andrew Lawrence: 8S. [500.9] Stephen: Yeah. [502.3] Curry: So looking at the design of it is, is the big thing that's slowing regular quads [509.66] Curry: down the aerodynamics, because all I see on that is like, it's a, it's a pointy [513.58] Curry: shape and the legs are sort of very curved. [516.98] Curry: So the air is going to officially go around it. [519.34] Stephen: It looks almost like a regular frame underneath it, right? [523.06] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [523.34] Andrew Lawrence: It's just like a solid X, like six mil carbon plate. [528.7] Andrew Lawrence: And then we've got vertical, like, uh, carbon plates, obviously to house a [533.38] Andrew Lawrence: battery of straps, and then got all the VTX, like the receiver. [537.46] Stephen: So you've got like a normal looking frame, but instead of the arms coming [540.42] Stephen: off in an X, like on one angle, they're like coming off 90 degrees from the [545.26] Stephen: ass of it instead of halfway along it. [547.7] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [548.58] Andrew Lawrence: It was more because it's quite the size of the batteries without cutting out the [553.1] Andrew Lawrence: middle of like the frame or having arms to join, um, obviously you need to put [561.26] Andrew Lawrence: the battery like we tried, I'm in the process at the moment of making another [566.94] Andrew Lawrence: smaller one that isn't probably as fast, but still like more aero for, um, doing [575.1] Andrew Lawrence: sort of high speed stuff, but not like, it's just more efficient, I guess. [581.06] Andrew Lawrence: But for like slower speed than like, I don't know, F1 cars or, uh, like [589.54] Andrew Lawrence: MotoGP or something similar to that. [592.34] Andrew Lawrence: So sorry, go ahead. [596.94] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, yeah, it's just, uh, the speed of it, this at a moment, it's still quite [603.26] Andrew Lawrence: in early development really, but, um, you can do about 370 kilometers an hour. [610.78] Stephen: But what speed does that come into its own versus like a regular racing [614.94] Stephen: quad X layout type, I don't know what you call that because it looks like an [618.14] Stephen: X, but it's not an X it's a rocket style. [620.9] Stephen: I guess, but what sort of speeds do you find that starts to become what you [625.5] Stephen: need instead of a regular, you know, H frame or racing style quad? [632.38] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, do you mean sort of speed wise or yeah, when is the handling of that [637.06] Stephen: suddenly like, because obviously it's going to be a beast at low speeds and [641.26] Stephen: you've got to like, kind of land it very carefully and everything. [645.54] Stephen: But when you get past a certain threshold, I'd have thought that [649.26] Stephen: becomes what you need and otherwise you're just a hundred percent throttle [653.14] Stephen: all the time on a traditional freight, right? [655.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I think it's just, it feels like a lot, you're not pushing it to go [660.38] Andrew Lawrence: like anywhere near as fast, like today as, uh, seeing others, like some guys [667.78] Andrew Lawrence: that obviously fly some of these, like, well, then it's them probably more X [676.78] Andrew Lawrence: eight, the next four, uh, versions and they can get like nearly 400, uh, [683.18] Andrew Lawrence: kilometers, but they just do it without arrow and it just like absolutely [688.38] Andrew Lawrence: destroys the batteries. [691.26] Andrew Lawrence: Whereas this like so far the batteries, uh, still seem pretty solid and [696.7] Andrew Lawrence: haven't even like, um, there's hardly any puff in and all like of deformed. [702.18] Andrew Lawrence: So it's, it, I mean, it's only pulling probably, I know you say only, but like, [707.7] Andrew Lawrence: um, between 60 and 70 amps. [713.45] Stephen: Uh, what like a cruise speed? [716.33] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, that's at full throttle. [718.01] Andrew Lawrence: A full throttle? [719.09] Stephen: Yeah. [719.33] Andrew Lawrence: That's not bad, is it? [720.61] Stephen: No. [721.09] Andrew Lawrence: So it's that it's like actually quite conservative, really like the speeds [726.37] Andrew Lawrence: that it's, uh, doing, but it probably can get about four minutes, probably [734.89] Andrew Lawrence: between a hundred and 150, uh, like plumbers an hour and running a 2.28 [741.17] Stephen: tests, so four minutes on a 2.28 tests. [744.41] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [744.93] Andrew Lawrence: And then you can probably do about three, like full throttle punches. [751.33] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, they're around like 50, like three, six, three straights. [756.37] Stephen: Right. [756.57] Stephen: Yeah. [756.89] Stephen: Follow them down the straights. [758.61] Stephen: Wow. [758.97] Jack: Yeah. [759.97] Jack: What do you see you got in there? [762.09] Jack: Uh, it's Foxy, uh, Reaper. [765.33] Andrew Lawrence: Wow. [767.33] Andrew Lawrence: Wow. [767.65] Andrew Lawrence: And you haven't killed anyone. [771.13] Andrew Lawrence: It's been like fine so far. [773.73] Stephen: But when you say like 60 to 70 amps, that's like total, right? [778.45] Stephen: Yeah. [779.69] Stephen: Wow. [780.41] Stephen: That's yeah. [782.09] Stephen: That's actually, cause I mean, we've all done a hundred plus amp punch outs. [785.73] Stephen: That's actually, uh, surprisingly efficient. [788.49] Stephen: Okay. [788.73] Stephen: You're an eight S rather than six S, but you know, even so. [792.81] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [793.05] Andrew Lawrence: So it's, they're all like pretty off the shelf parts really, but it's obviously [797.49] Andrew Lawrence: the shell makes like such, like. [801.01] Andrew Lawrence: We've only probably been messing about with it for about, I don't know, [804.17] Andrew Lawrence: coming up to two months or something like that as well as like, well, [809.17] Andrew Lawrence: obviously doing all the regular stuff. [811.13] Andrew Lawrence: We're still, it's still like loads of prototyping that go on all the [814.33] Andrew Lawrence: times, like, uh, the other day we tried to make, um, I don't know if you can see [818.41] Tony: that sort of a, oh, [824.17] Jack: no, it's, um, uh, dimple. [826.97] Jack: You got the old dimple press out. [829.05] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [830.25] Jack: Uh, as in golf, it's like mimic golf balls. [834.49] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [834.77] Andrew Lawrence: It's a minute just to see if, if it would make any, but I don't know. [839.65] Andrew Lawrence: It is quite tricky, but it did go 10 kilometers faster with this, but I [843.81] Andrew Lawrence: don't know if that's because of possibly that it's a lot lighter, um, the [850.33] Andrew Lawrence: actual shell cause it's got so many dimples. [852.33] Andrew Lawrence: And so I know it's, it's quite hard to test, especially because the [858.45] Andrew Lawrence: wind changes so much. [860.81] Andrew Lawrence: There's a lot of variables really to know, like without spending loads on [865.41] Andrew Lawrence: doing like fluid dynamic Alice's to all the time. [871.25] Tony: Is there any air ducts into the battery compartment or anything like that [875.53] Tony: to cool the battery down? [878.8] Jack: Must be like the lens that weather. [880.92] Tony: Yeah. [881.28] Andrew Lawrence: There's quite, if really, if you're like, look down at it, there's a fair, [884.76] Andrew Lawrence: it's fairly big, like it does get [886.64] Andrew Lawrence: knackered up warm in there. [889.92] Andrew Lawrence: Um, but it's, it's fine really of all the times. [894.28] Andrew Lawrence: It's impressively efficient. [895.84] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [896.64] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know. [897.44] Stephen: It's just, so obviously the headlines, the speed, but you're able to actually [902.36] Stephen: follow cars round corners, which is impressive because most of the people [905.64] Stephen: that build a craft like this, they're obsessed with like, let's just get it [909.12] Stephen: to a hundred percent throttle, we'll get the hero number. [911.44] Stephen: That's it. [912.0] Stephen: But you're actually following stuff around a fairly convoluted tight track. [917.56] Stephen: Um, how did you design it to do that as well as those impressive straight line [923.48] Stephen: numbers? [925.12] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, it's, it's more from, I don't know, say looking at the Dutch drone [928.96] Andrew Lawrence: gods and rather now the batch, well, and just like general rockets always [937.4] Andrew Lawrence: a thrust is usually on the bottom, isn't it? [940.12] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [940.36] Andrew Lawrence: Rockets are not famous for turning. [942.24] Andrew Lawrence: No, but it honestly doesn't feel like, uh, too bad. [949.08] Andrew Lawrence: I thought it was going to be horrendous, but like probably, but especially [953.52] Andrew Lawrence: when you have low, I think the camera angle dictates a lot of how it actually [958.4] Andrew Lawrence: feels like it flies, to be honest. [961.56] Andrew Lawrence: Um, but like low camera angles and even a high ones, the weird thing is it [969.48] Andrew Lawrence: feels like as a turbo, I guess. [972.2] Andrew Lawrence: So like, and as well, like throttling down to catch really fast things just [978.32] Andrew Lawrence: feels really like a natural, I don't know, cause you just think we've cooked. [984.08] Andrew Lawrence: Well, cause of fly quad, you're following some incredibly expensive performance [988.28] Stephen: car and you're like, surely I don't need to slow down. [991.12] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [991.84] Andrew Lawrence: But just, I don't know, throttling down towards the ground just feels kind [996.04] Andrew Lawrence: of wrong if you know what I mean. [998.6] Andrew Lawrence: And then there's not like, cause you the speed of it, you just, it's so easy [1004.44] Andrew Lawrence: to overshoot the mark because you're coming in hot to it and you obviously [1008.48] Andrew Lawrence: you're not going to slow down enough to it. [1010.48] Andrew Lawrence: Like gently to just sort of, yeah, there's, there's still a lot, a lot to [1016.64] Andrew Lawrence: learn with it, to be honest. [1018.64] Stephen: So it doesn't like arrow breaks like a normal drone would if that's the [1022.08] Stephen: side effect of all the arrow on it, it doesn't have the drag and the natural [1026.76] Stephen: tendency to break itself to slow down. [1029.8] Andrew Lawrence: It does de-accelerate fast, but I think it's just cause the speeds are so much [1034.92] Andrew Lawrence: faster than you used to. [1036.48] Andrew Lawrence: It's just, especially without like, it's so like a flown around an empty [1042.68] Andrew Lawrence: field so many times, but you just need so much experience, I guess, flying [1048.96] Andrew Lawrence: it with, well, tracking something that is actually fast enough to like, [1056.2] Andrew Lawrence: warrant doing it with this. [1058.44] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know. [1059.04] Andrew Lawrence: There's quite a big sort of learning curve. [1061.36] Andrew Lawrence: It feels like you're starting all over again, you know, when you first like, [1065.28] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know, filming, like your mates is flying about. [1069.48] Andrew Lawrence: It's quite easy when you start off to overshoot or to like lose them really [1073.28] Andrew Lawrence: easy and it just feels like you've gone back to sort of square one on that, in [1076.76] Andrew Lawrence: that sort of instance, really. [1079.76] Curry: Did you have really experimentation on, on props? [1083.8] Curry: I asked cause a friend of mine who used to fly really fast wings said when, when [1089.32] Curry: the props are spinning really quickly, you actually have to reduce the pitch [1092.88] Curry: else they, they, they're not catching any air. [1095.24] Curry: I'm just wondering if you're running sort of regular props or you. [1099.8] Andrew Lawrence: There's some like, um, these ones are newer, like HQ, uh, I think they're five [1105.88] Andrew Lawrence: two by eight, uh, pitch by blades. [1110.56] Curry: So then they're pretty like, yeah. [1113.92] Curry: Quite a heavy pitch though. [1115.0] Curry: Yeah. [1117.04] Jack: But, um, stop some flattening out, I guess. [1120.88] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, definitely. [1121.6] Andrew Lawrence: It needs to be like, um, and they're like nylon infused carbon, nothing. [1128.76] Andrew Lawrence: So you need like really stiff props, like, uh, you, you usual sort of like racing [1135.4] Andrew Lawrence: ones or whatever, you can hear it. [1136.72] Andrew Lawrence: They just flatten out and you just don't get anywhere near the top [1139.48] Andrew Lawrence: speeds for anything similar to how to do it. [1141.76] Stephen: So like, oh, five of props or anything and saying, yeah. [1145.68] Andrew Lawrence: No. [1146.72] Andrew Lawrence: So, uh, yeah, it's, it's, I don't know. [1150.0] Andrew Lawrence: It is quite, it's, they're all like really accessible parts that you can [1154.16] Andrew Lawrence: buy, I mean, it's not super specialist, I guess, in all respects. [1161.96] Stephen: Yeah. [1162.2] Stephen: I think I'm running that for all probably an older version of that ESC and [1165.64] Stephen: my seven inch bird, the, uh, the Fox here eight S one. [1169.44] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1170.0] Andrew Lawrence: They're like, I dunno, they're pretty bomb proof overall, to be honest. [1174.76] Andrew Lawrence: Few of their flight controllers have had recently, uh, like had noisy gyros, [1178.84] Andrew Lawrence: but just, I think that's like all flight controllers seem to be as of recent, [1184.24] Andrew Lawrence: to be honest. [1186.36] Stephen: Well, it just happens because people experimenting with new designs [1189.16] Stephen: and that takes a while to settle down. [1190.84] Stephen: Unfortunately, those, uh, those nice old MP6 thousands, they, uh, they [1195.2] Stephen: were quite noise resistant and move away from them caused everyone to have [1199.64] Stephen: to redesign everything. [1201.6] Stephen: Yeah. [1201.92] Stephen: It's a bit of a throwing at the wall and seeing what sticks or layout. [1206.6] Stephen: Yeah. [1207.08] Andrew Lawrence: But now another thing that is being like, um, really sort of, uh, [1211.96] Andrew Lawrence: useful with the timing of this is just the DJI for coming out. [1215.56] Andrew Lawrence: Just the quality of that and meaning that only have one camera to deal with [1219.36] Andrew Lawrence: instead of sort of messing around with sort of naked GoPros within it. [1223.56] Andrew Lawrence: And it just means the whole is obviously can be a lot smaller. [1228.6] Andrew Lawrence: It just makes it a lot simpler, really. [1231.2] Andrew Lawrence: How's the old full video quality being received? [1233.36] Andrew Lawrence: Are people happy with it? [1235.12] Andrew Lawrence: I think because it's a bit of a specialist like drone, like, because [1240.64] Andrew Lawrence: when you, even with the GoPros, when you're going so fast, there is like [1243.92] Andrew Lawrence: small micro vibrations and whatever happening and there's like a lot of [1248.92] Andrew Lawrence: blur, so the actual, the quality for, I don't know, unless you were a color [1255.92] Andrew Lawrence: grader, you would probably never know the difference. [1258.56] Andrew Lawrence: So I think between a GoPro and the quality of that, to be honest. [1264.76] Andrew Lawrence: And just, I don't know as well. [1266.08] Andrew Lawrence: The video link on the Oh four is just crazy. [1269.16] Andrew Lawrence: It's just like half the time you don't even have to think I'm a flying [1273.52] Andrew Lawrence: behind something and the way around the whole track. [1278.44] Stephen: Or do you have to like work within the same stretch and double back on yourself? [1281.92] Stephen: How does that work out? [1283.04] Stephen: Silverstone's not, not too big, is it? [1286.44] Andrew Lawrence: No, it's not like, um, again, you'd have to have a repeater, like if, um, cause [1292.8] Andrew Lawrence: walks now they've just brought out, um, one avenue, the repeater for it. [1298.32] Andrew Lawrence: Um, but as well, especially for, uh, um, the F1 there's so much, um, like around [1307.16] Andrew Lawrence: your risk assessments and everything, it has to be done completely legit. [1311.44] Andrew Lawrence: Like, and it's just, it keeps getting gnarlier and gnarlier. [1314.36] Andrew Lawrence: Like we spent probably way over two months just going back forth with like [1319.72] Andrew Lawrence: the F1 on risk assessment, like little bit. [1322.04] Andrew Lawrence: So sort of all has to be above board really. [1326.0] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1326.48] Andrew Lawrence: Well, what you say about board, what, what pushes you? [1329.08] Stephen: 25 milliwatts, baby. [1332.64] Stephen: Yeah. [1333.08] Stephen: You are in a pretty noisy environment with a bunch of broadcast video gear. [1336.4] Stephen: I can't imagine they're all running 25 milliwatts. [1339.04] Andrew Lawrence: It probably is a bit of noise, isn't it? [1342.92] Andrew Lawrence: A lot of the time in like in, because Bahrain was just a test in this year and [1348.2] Andrew Lawrence: it went, they went to Australia, didn't they for the first one? [1350.6] Andrew Lawrence: It wasn't, um, it wasn't any of the light live stuff, but a lot of the time there [1356.24] Andrew Lawrence: is, there isn't really, I'd hate to actually be at one of the races doing it. [1361.04] Andrew Lawrence: Like the RF from all that's and just the amount of people would be crazy. [1366.6] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1368.48] Andrew Lawrence: So be a lot more tricky, I think in an actual live, uh, risk, like something [1375.2] Andrew Lawrence: like that, but again, I dunno, it's, it would be at least when we're filming, [1381.72] Andrew Lawrence: you're just filming one car. [1383.16] Andrew Lawrence: So say if some, you're doing a follow shot. [1385.08] Andrew Lawrence: So if something goes wrong, it's going to probably just fall on the track behind them. [1390.32] Andrew Lawrence: It's not like it's going to get run over or like, [1393.6] Andrew Lawrence: you know, yeah, which I dunno, I can understand why the F1 don't ever want to [1400.04] Andrew Lawrence: use like, well, it's and like loads of race series. [1402.96] Andrew Lawrence: They don't ever let drones overfly a light live circuit. [1406.52] Tony: If you know what I mean? [1407.84] Tony: Too much to go wrong. [1411.24] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1411.76] Andrew Lawrence: It's just, and the amount of money that is involved with it. [1415.48] Andrew Lawrence: I just, I don't think it'll ever be like a viable thing to be honest. [1419.68] Andrew Lawrence: Do you have a GPS in there or are you, uh, yeah, little, uh, M10 like you, I think it is in there. [1428.24] Stephen: What's the return to home? [1429.36] Stephen: If things do go completely, uh, awry. [1431.84] Stephen: I mean, I imagine you've probably gotten happy on throttle at least once and gotten [1436.24] Stephen: a little bit too far to see what's going on. [1438.12] Stephen: Cause that's, that's bound to happen when you're testing the drone out, right? [1441.0] Stephen: Is it able to get back home and land itself? [1443.36] Andrew Lawrence: Or is that like new beta flights. [1446.72] Andrew Lawrence: So good to, uh, like GPS rescue and everything, you know, it will, uh, come and land. [1453.08] Andrew Lawrence: But the speed that it goes up to whatever you set the height was the first time I was [1458.52] Andrew Lawrence: just testing it would fail safe. [1460.08] Andrew Lawrence: It was extremely like, [1464.52] Andrew Lawrence: yeah, he was just like, right. [1466.8] Andrew Lawrence: Like, cause I didn't realize it had been going up higher and obviously on it sets [1470.48] Andrew Lawrence: from the base and it, and it was, well, went up probably a bit higher than it should do [1475.72] Andrew Lawrence: in like one or two seconds. [1477.52] Andrew Lawrence: And I was like, holy hell. [1478.96] Stephen: Like, you know, and you just like, you know, you just hear there's kind of something [1483.16] Stephen: that sounds like a strangled synthesizer. [1485.6] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1486.64] Andrew Lawrence: It's just like, oh, I'm like very high up, very fast. [1489.88] Andrew Lawrence: So that was a bit of a eye opener. [1492.12] Andrew Lawrence: So spicy. [1493.6] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1494.92] Andrew Lawrence: But no, I don't know. [1496.44] Andrew Lawrence: Overall it's yeah, I guess like I haven't flown loads of sort of wings and, uh, [1502.24] Andrew Lawrence: similar things to that. [1504.12] Andrew Lawrence: But like, I think if you, I don't know with quads, I always seem to, uh, like [1510.28] Andrew Lawrence: give it a bit of throttle, but then I chill as well. [1512.36] Andrew Lawrence: Whereas like wings and, um, fixed wing stuff, you have to be, you need to be [1517.76] Andrew Lawrence: going fast the whole time, don't you? [1519.2] Andrew Lawrence: So it's, I don't know. [1520.44] Andrew Lawrence: It is quite a different experience, I guess, to fly compared to normal quads. [1527.76] Jack: I don't know. [1528.4] Jack: Got a big enough wing. [1529.4] Jack: You can kind of slow right down. [1532.2] Tony: Yeah. [1532.56] Tony: What KV, um, what KV are the motors? [1535.12] Tony: Are they just like a 2,600? [1537.96] Tony: Uh, these are 1950. [1539.88] Andrew Lawrence: 1950 these are. [1542.36] Stephen: Yeah. [1543.48] Stephen: Uh, is that with a five inch crop on it? [1548.6] Stephen: Yeah. [1549.48] Stephen: Yeah. [1549.68] Stephen: On what size of the motors? [1551.88] Stephen: Uh, 2,808. [1555.36] Stephen: Oh, it's a chunky motor then. [1556.84] Stephen: So you've got like a, a motor you'd normally see on like a seven inch board. [1561.12] Stephen: Is it driving seven inch prop as well? [1563.2] Stephen: Uh, no, just five inches. [1566.16] Stephen: On a seven inch motor running at eight S. [1568.92] Stephen: So plenty of talk on that. [1571.12] Tony: So you could go faster then with a more KV, but then it probably came more [1576.92] Tony: battery, I suppose, wouldn't you? [1580.59] Jack: Yeah. [1582.03] Stephen: That's not melting the shell off the, uh, sonic. [1586.47] Stephen: That's usually the limitation. [1588.63] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1589.47] Andrew Lawrence: But like at the moment you can, like, there's transonic brother, [1594.19] Andrew Lawrence: the, um, like the XC 60 is warm, you know, after being a few punches. [1602.23] Andrew Lawrence: So I think you'd probably have to start going towards like, I don't know, [1605.59] Andrew Lawrence: XT 90 and there isn't really space for that. [1608.91] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know. [1610.59] Andrew Lawrence: At the moment it seems like it depends what you want to do. [1613.59] Andrew Lawrence: If you want to go the fastest ever, you'd probably make, you know, like a carbon. [1617.71] Andrew Lawrence: There's a guy called, is it fast boy? [1620.39] Andrew Lawrence: And he's made like carbon shell and the arms are sort of tucked a lot [1625.87] Andrew Lawrence: further underneath the drone, but just, you know, going in, like, obviously, [1631.11] Stephen: like profiles carbon where you get the cloth and like shape it to what [1635.87] Stephen: you've got as a 3d print there. [1637.31] Andrew Lawrence: And yeah, but even like sort of the actual arms on it on that one, they're [1643.95] Andrew Lawrence: like tucked right underneath it. [1645.59] Andrew Lawrence: Cause obviously it's going to be a lot sort of slimmer profile and it's going [1649.47] Andrew Lawrence: to be a lot more arrow and a lot harder to steer as well. [1653.23] Andrew Lawrence: You're not the, for me, it's, it's pointless. [1656.27] Andrew Lawrence: Really. [1656.63] Andrew Lawrence: The top speed is like fine already. [1660.27] Andrew Lawrence: It's more like handling and sort of the efficiency of it is a lot more [1665.11] Andrew Lawrence: important to me now, but even, I don't know, it's like, it's still, it's [1671.51] Andrew Lawrence: such like a niche thing in itself. [1673.23] Andrew Lawrence: Really. [1673.55] Andrew Lawrence: Like, I dunno, most of the time I probably wouldn't need it unless I'm [1677.27] Andrew Lawrence: chasing F1 cars and then you're only going to do one or two shots with like [1682.07] Andrew Lawrence: follow cam and then you're going to be doing a different variety of shots. [1685.87] Andrew Lawrence: So it is like super niche thing to be honest. [1690.91] Stephen: What's it like doing like a 180 degree flip turn like an eye throttle on that thing? [1695.91] Andrew Lawrence: Oh, I haven't done it going like a full, like full throttle, like eased [1700.67] Andrew Lawrence: off each time and sort of, you know, just done. [1704.47] Stephen: Yeah. [1704.91] Andrew Lawrence: I haven't experimented with it that much, I guess. [1708.03] Stephen: Oh, I guess what I'm wondering is when does it start to shake? [1711.11] Stephen: I mean, have you, have you got that far or are you just kind of coaxing it very [1715.15] Stephen: carefully through because it's such a pain to rebuild obviously? [1720.47] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I do like really harsh, like some like, like more orbits and like, I [1726.95] Andrew Lawrence: dunno, I guess like a 180 sort of, not like more like a really hard split ass. [1733.55] Andrew Lawrence: Like, I don't really try and do those going for, cause I'd never do it if [1737.71] Andrew Lawrence: that would make sense. [1738.99] Andrew Lawrence: So I haven't. [1739.75] Stephen: Yeah, you don't need to do it for the role that you're putting it to. [1743.15] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1744.15] Andrew Lawrence: But like it, when it's doing really sort of hard, aggressive orbits, you can, [1749.15] Andrew Lawrence: and you can hear it as well, just not trilling, but I dunno, it's, you can [1756.11] Andrew Lawrence: tell it's under like a lot of, I guess, G-force or whatever, you know, to be, be [1762.91] Andrew Lawrence: doing those kinds of moves compared to like normally. [1766.27] Andrew Lawrence: And you can, as well, you can see obviously getting a lot slower, but the [1770.67] Andrew Lawrence: amp draw, I think, makes it a lot more happy. [1775.51] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [1775.91] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1776.43] Andrew Lawrence: So. [1778.11] Stephen: That's interesting. [1778.95] Stephen: So like hard cornering, you'll actually see the higher amp draw rather than [1782.39] Stephen: just like that. [1782.91] Frank: Yeah, going in sort of more, yeah. [1786.59] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, downloaded and [1790.43] Frank: edited to make sense when it's played audio only, censored to please the [1794.35] Frank: iTunes people hosted on the internet, forwarded through to your podcast [1797.39] Frank: provider, downloaded, playing on your device, and is now playing in your ears. [1801.71] Frank: All thanks to our Patreons. [1803.91] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. [1807.27] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out. [1812.15] Jack: Right. [1812.47] Jack: We got a load of questions here. [1814.47] Jack: So the first one was FX node asking, do your rates for low to high speed? [1821.59] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, I run probably about for three, 400 degrees for, for this. [1828.87] Andrew Lawrence: So if you want it quite slow, the fast, I don't know, with these [1831.59] Andrew Lawrence: quads, the faster you move in, there's the slower you want your rates. [1835.11] Andrew Lawrence: So I'd say, because like, I dunno, if I feel like even, um, probably [1841.91] Andrew Lawrence: beef, like default, like being, what are they six, 70 would, it just [1847.63] Andrew Lawrence: feel way too twitchy, like you don't want to sort of do any really [1851.03] Andrew Lawrence: sudden moves with it, I guess. [1854.15] Stephen: So that's 350 degrees. [1856.63] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, right. [1857.23] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1857.51] Andrew Lawrence: Around about like three 50, I find like you as well, it's sort of, it's very [1865.67] Andrew Lawrence: much, I know you pre-ent stuff, but it's everything kind of needs to be [1870.15] Andrew Lawrence: preemptive, you know what I mean? [1871.47] Andrew Lawrence: Being reactive with it just doesn't work in the slight. [1875.31] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [1876.99] Andrew Lawrence: But like obviously on the track, you know, where the corners are, et cetera, [1880.47] Andrew Lawrence: et cetera, like if it was just, I dunno, I dunno, maybe if it was like, you [1886.67] Andrew Lawrence: know, really, I dunno what boats can do, but I think that would be extremely tricky. [1891.31] Andrew Lawrence: You know, doing hot or planes or something similar to that would be, um, [1896.91] Stephen: quite hard to fix nodes. [1899.43] Stephen: You don't need rates any higher than three 50. [1901.83] Stephen: There you are. [1905.51] Stephen: What was the next question, Jack? [1907.47] Jack: Um, it's more of a common. [1909.39] Jack: It was, uh, magic went so said flying corn. [1913.47] Jack: And then Robert said stronger, strong enough for a man, but made for a woman. [1922.23] Jack: Quite girthy. [1923.99] Jack: And, uh, followed up with, I would hate to see anyone come into the chat, not [1929.59] Jack: really knowing what we're talking about and seeing that, um, and, uh, magic [1938.63] Jack: wonderful asks, is the camera angle connected to throttle or a separate [1944.03] Jack: slot switch, like a slider or whatnot? [1947.15] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, yeah, I just got it on a free position switch. [1949.67] Andrew Lawrence: So, uh, have it like probably about 10 degrees, like probably about 45 and [1955.95] Andrew Lawrence: then around like 70 or something. [1958.51] Curry: Um, is it to land? [1960.31] Curry: Cause obviously it's not like you can just put it down and it will sit there. [1963.99] Curry: It's going to, it's going to fall over one way or the other, isn't it? [1966.79] Andrew Lawrence: With its low camera angle, it's actually like really easy. [1973.67] Andrew Lawrence: Like it's not, you just sort of, it's a bit weird because obviously it's so much [1979.63] Andrew Lawrence: higher up than the normal quads, but it's it like you get a gauge for it and just [1985.19] Andrew Lawrence: cutting and it's fine to be honest. [1987.19] Stephen: Do you land on the ground or do you have any sort of, uh, soft landing [1990.51] Stephen: zones just to save the prints? [1993.19] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, no, it's like, honestly, because the camera angle is so low, you can see [1998.99] Andrew Lawrence: that it's like, I'm not saying it's as land as a like a warp or a like, you [2004.27] Andrew Lawrence: know, like there's no, it's not like you come in and it addiction it ever. [2009.35] Andrew Lawrence: It's like coming in really controlled and it's like, I wish I could put a [2013.23] Andrew Lawrence: servo on all my quads. [2014.51] Andrew Lawrence: It's so much easier to, you know, like the naught, some of the other like, um, [2021.19] Andrew Lawrence: ones that I use, I haven't got servos on and you're just running the high camera [2025.31] Andrew Lawrence: angle and you're like, say, if you've got a weight somewhere, you're just doing [2028.79] Andrew Lawrence: some, so many weird like moves to just try and stay in the same place a lot of [2033.07] Andrew Lawrence: the time. [2033.19] Stephen: You try and spot your own head and like, if there's no trees next to you. [2038.15] Andrew Lawrence: Oh, it's horrible. [2039.63] Andrew Lawrence: And just being able to like, just put it at a low camera angle and you [2042.95] Andrew Lawrence: know, something's coming and you can just flick it to something high is just [2046.07] Andrew Lawrence: like game changing, really. [2048.67] Stephen: Yeah. [2048.83] Stephen: I run most of mine at like 45, some of them at 35, but the, uh, there's [2052.87] Stephen: occasions when I've just had to like, just ditch it at my feet because, uh, [2059.03] Stephen: yeah, I didn't really know how far away the ground was. [2061.71] Stephen: Um, so, um, what have we got master? [2064.95] Stephen: We've got a comment from num skull saying, uh, master air screw do a [2068.83] Stephen: lot of handy prop pitches. [2070.67] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2071.47] Andrew Lawrence: And, uh, APC, is it APC? [2074.35] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2076.03] Stephen: We're playing guys. [2077.43] Stephen: Yeah. [2078.99] Stephen: Uh, Stu [2080.75] Stephen: if you have any footage of it, you can share in flight. [2083.43] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, I've got one of, uh, for me, a free car that I could probably share. [2089.71] Stephen: Go on. [2090.43] Stephen: If you've got it kicking around, that'd be lovely. [2092.79] Stephen: While you're digging out the footage, uh, FX nodes wondering if you use gyro [2096.31] Stephen: flow to, uh, tidy up any of the wobbles. [2099.63] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, yeah, it's all run through gyro flag. [2102.51] Andrew Lawrence: Um, absolute godsend. [2106.27] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [2106.55] Tony: Well, why would you not, you can see your screen. [2109.43] Curry: Oh, sorry. [2112.11] Andrew Lawrence: What you see, sorry, forget it. [2116.75] Andrew Lawrence: We have a following, a very fast, uh, just following some of the, um, sort [2124.67] Andrew Lawrence: of rookies in the like, um, F3 cars that were like going to rain. [2134.63] Stephen: So smooth. [2138.34] Andrew Lawrence: Playing it again. [2138.98] Stephen: Now, so can you tell us what sort of speeds they're going as they [2142.78] Andrew Lawrence: come out with one of their, uh, I don't actually know. [2147.98] Andrew Lawrence: Um, off the top of my head to be quite honest, but I don't know. [2154.38] Andrew Lawrence: They're probably like, we weren't really pushing it. [2158.38] Andrew Lawrence: Um, it's not a great track in there because there's so many trees [2162.86] Andrew Lawrence: everywhere, it's quite hard to spot the cars houses there as well. [2167.7] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2168.82] Andrew Lawrence: Um, coming through, uh, it's probably, it's probably getting up to, uh, I [2175.86] Andrew Lawrence: don't know, maybe two fifth. [2179.46] Andrew Lawrence: It's not like super fast. [2181.14] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, like any of these sectors are going to be doing almost a hundred [2184.02] Stephen: through the corners, I'd have thought because that's fairly typical, isn't it? [2187.62] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2188.66] Andrew Lawrence: Like on the straight, probably going up to, I don't know, maybe two 50 or [2192.82] Andrew Lawrence: something similar to here, like him, like. [2195.78] Andrew Lawrence: Just put it in a way. [2196.86] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2197.22] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2197.9] Andrew Lawrence: And I saw a leave in there cause it's, uh, it would have been, uh, out of [2202.34] Andrew Lawrence: line of sight as well. [2203.5] Stephen: So it was a sort of, but it didn't look like you were having trouble following. [2207.26] Stephen: It was quite impressive for command. [2209.06] Stephen: It was just, you know, it looked very intentional. [2211.7] Stephen: Like you weren't stretching yourself to keep up with the car. [2214.34] Andrew Lawrence: No, like it, the hardest thing honestly is like dropping in behind them and like [2222.5] Andrew Lawrence: sort of knowing that you're going to, cause you're coming in hot, knowing [2227.42] Andrew Lawrence: that you're going to sort of approach it at a reasonable speed, not to overshoot [2230.7] Andrew Lawrence: it, you sort of have to really, uh, back off after like throttling down, which [2235.9] Andrew Lawrence: is, it just feels such a like a bizarre thing to do, like the only, I don't [2241.14] Andrew Lawrence: know, yeah, it's just quite square, scary, uh, throttling into the ground, I guess. [2247.66] Jack: Yeah. [2249.34] Jack: And he's just about to enter a corner as well. [2252.34] Jack: So yeah, it's still slowing down. [2254.78] Jack: Yeah. [2255.1] Andrew Lawrence: It's really tricky to like gage. [2257.14] Andrew Lawrence: It's not like Imola, to be honest, probably isn't, wasn't wouldn't be like [2262.34] Andrew Lawrence: the optimal place to do it. [2265.46] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2265.74] Andrew Lawrence: You want sort of something with some nice long straights and, um, like. [2273.38] Andrew Lawrence: Well, if it was really tight corners, again, I think you'd, you'd struggle if [2277.3] Andrew Lawrence: it there was, yeah, I haven't flown it loads and loads to the, compared to, [2285.3] Andrew Lawrence: you know, normal quads to know exactly how it's going to behave, if that makes sense. [2292.66] Andrew Lawrence: So it's still like, uh, taking slow steps with it all. [2297.22] Stephen: What tracks are best in terms of line of sight? [2299.58] Stephen: Cause obviously you mentioned there, you lost line of sight and backed off the car. [2303.9] Stephen: What track can you cover most of the track? [2309.06] Andrew Lawrence: Um, but rain's not too bad because you can, um, get up to like high positions there. [2318.82] Andrew Lawrence: Um, Sylvester isn't, isn't too bad for like, but like the, the wings, uh, [2325.46] Andrew Lawrence: quite, quite large, if you know where the pits are quite large. [2329.42] Andrew Lawrence: So it really like, uh, disrupts the signal over those ones. [2333.86] Andrew Lawrence: Um, cause like, say when the Dutch drone guys, uh, God's did theirs, theirs is [2339.38] Andrew Lawrence: all, um, with like a relay system off, uh, like DJI inspire. [2346.1] Andrew Lawrence: So yeah. [2350.26] Andrew Lawrence: Um, trying to think what other, like the smaller circuits in the UK are [2356.54] Andrew Lawrence: like quite good, um, for it. [2358.94] Andrew Lawrence: I dunno, there's like, I don't know if you know, angle C and again, [2364.86] Andrew Lawrence: at like the top gear test track in Dunsfold, that's just like a massive [2369.06] Andrew Lawrence: open runway that's really good for like more like, like line of sight. [2374.38] Tony: I've gone round there with a stick. [2378.34] Tony: It was good. [2381.86] Jack: Can you, um, will you be doing any stuff with drive drive or like, you [2387.58] Jack: know, uh, like all Alex or top dead center, any of those guys? [2393.98] Andrew Lawrence: Uh, one of, one of two things with, uh, drive drive and like doing [2399.82] Andrew Lawrence: like, um, just like, you know, the top gear, I guess it's all this online [2404.9] Andrew Lawrence: now, like magazine shoots and similar things to that did like some of [2410.38] Andrew Lawrence: their last grand tours and you know, um, bits like that, but it's just weird. [2416.3] Andrew Lawrence: It's just like all the sort of those shows have just stopped at the [2420.54] Andrew Lawrence: same time, if you know what I mean? [2423.66] Stephen: Incident. [2424.7] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2425.58] Andrew Lawrence: So, um, no, hopefully they're like grand tour does come back, but God knows [2432.34] Andrew Lawrence: what will ever happen with top gear. [2433.82] Andrew Lawrence: I think, I don't know, sort of run its course. [2435.82] Andrew Lawrence: We did do like an Australian version one. [2439.38] Jack: Oh, did you meet Moog? [2441.62] Jack: Uh, um, what's his name? [2445.9] Jack: Uh, Oh, I want to say, oh God, Benjamin, but it's not. [2454.18] Jack: It's, uh, you were stuck in a really good hunger. [2458.98] Curry: That's like a bit, yeah. [2462.18] Curry: Well, while I was looking that up, I was going to say, I thought the grand tours [2465.66] Curry: coming back in the form of a program called not the grand tour or something. [2471.02] Andrew Lawrence: They were trying to get different presenters to, um, do it, but I just, I [2476.9] Andrew Lawrence: don't think they found like a nice combination of, uh, people that say [2481.7] Andrew Lawrence: chemistry work well together. [2483.06] Tony: So I don't know if that's. [2485.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2488.02] Tony: It just hasn't worked, does it? [2493.55] Stephen: Magic pencil, um, wants to know about brands hatch saying that would be [2498.07] Stephen: cool as a smaller circuit, I guess. [2500.23] Stephen: Would you be able to, uh, track them all the way around brands? [2504.99] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2505.31] Andrew Lawrence: There's just a, again, uh, brands, brands, I think, depending on which [2511.95] Andrew Lawrence: circuit you do, there's a lot of tree lines. [2514.59] Andrew Lawrence: Um, there's like a bigger loop. [2516.83] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know. [2517.59] Andrew Lawrence: Depends which one you do, but there's a lot of tree lined around the back. [2521.59] Andrew Lawrence: So again, you'd have to have a repeater system. [2525.47] Stephen: If you wanted to do that, it looks like you're pretty, would you [2531.67] Stephen: be below tree level there? [2534.51] Stephen: Uh, how far you are off the deck? [2538.51] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2539.71] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2539.99] Andrew Lawrence: You'd be below tree level. [2542.31] Andrew Lawrence: You don't really want to lose signal when you go in pretty [2544.83] Andrew Lawrence: fast to feel this thing, even though it's trying to play as safe as possibly. [2549.91] Andrew Lawrence: Yes. [2551.51] Jack: Yeah. [2551.75] Jack: It was Blake, the, uh, his name Moog from me. [2558.07] Jack: They had him on, they brought him in on top gear Australia. [2563.95] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2564.71] Andrew Lawrence: No, the Australian guys are like, uh, no good fun. [2568.91] Andrew Lawrence: This seems to mess about a lot more than, you know, I don't know that they just [2575.71] Andrew Lawrence: want to have fun rather than, uh, present like a TV show a lot. [2581.47] Stephen: I think that was some of the best content on a type of show. [2584.79] Stephen: It was a top gear. [2586.35] Stephen: I remember when I was a kid, it was this deadly serious car show where people [2590.75] Stephen: talked about the quality of the window winders, you know, and, uh, it really [2596.19] Stephen: struggled to find this nation until people just started asking around a bit. [2600.71] Jack: Yeah. [2602.63] Jack: No, it's a fine line. [2604.75] Jack: You got to have a bit of messing around, but also, you know, appreciation [2609.31] Stephen: of risk at the same time, which is what did for it. [2612.31] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2612.99] Andrew Lawrence: You got to be messing around for the cameras, if you know what I mean. [2616.43] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2617.71] Andrew Lawrence: Rather than just messing around. [2618.91] Andrew Lawrence: Is that like, I don't know. [2621.19] Stephen: So it's like what people say about comedy. [2623.03] Stephen: If, if you're having a great time filming comedy, then it probably [2626.95] Stephen: isn't going to be funny to the audience. [2628.91] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2629.71] Andrew Lawrence: I guess it's just, um, like the time we live in, I don't know if that format [2634.83] Andrew Lawrence: works as well, like nowadays, especially with all the amount of YouTube [2638.79] Andrew Lawrence: content and whatever, yeah. [2643.95] Jack: Do you think it's water down there to tell you at all? [2647.43] Jack: Oh yeah, yeah, definitely. [2649.79] Stephen: There's stuff on TV. [2652.07] Stephen: Yeah. [2653.23] Stephen: It's difficult to do a 30 minute show when someone can do like a 30 second [2657.75] Stephen: sound bite and get a huge amount of media attention for that. [2662.51] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2663.55] Andrew Lawrence: A lot, a lot of the time with like the certain things, obviously it's [2668.59] Andrew Lawrence: not, there's scripts, if you know what I mean, a lot, they're following. [2673.11] Andrew Lawrence: So it's, I don't know, maybe not so much the old ones, but like the new ones. [2677.67] Andrew Lawrence: It was very like just going through the motions a bit. [2681.59] Stephen: Yeah. [2682.23] Andrew Lawrence: So I have to see, see what happens. [2683.83] Stephen: Everything runs its course. [2685.47] Stephen: There's very few TV series where they're as fresh on series 10 as they are on [2689.79] Stephen: series one and that's just, I'm sure there's someone else to take up the bat on. [2696.75] Stephen: And there's still people interested in cars. [2698.71] Stephen: There will be a TV show about cars. [2700.31] Stephen: It's just a question of what it's going to look like. [2703.95] Jack: Oh yeah. [2706.23] Jack: It's more of a TV show about farming now. [2709.55] Jack: Yeah. [2711.87] Jack: They're doing quite, you know, I think they're doing quite well. [2715.39] Andrew Lawrence: No, it's great. [2716.43] Andrew Lawrence: It's crazy. [2717.11] Andrew Lawrence: Like the, well, just the amount of people that go to his farm shop is just insane. [2722.79] Stephen: I'm surprised by how popular it was amongst farmers. [2725.23] Stephen: Apparently they just haven't had like a loud mouth on their side before. [2732.19] Jack: Yeah. [2733.35] Jack: Well, you need, I think it helps that he's got, got the budget to do anything. [2739.19] Jack: He just, you know, obviously records some TV stuff and then wastes money. [2743.99] Jack: Farthing. [2745.11] Stephen: Well, it's more like, well, let's do a hundred ground doing this. [2748.87] Stephen: This is what you're supposed to do. [2750.15] Stephen: Look, I've just lost all my bloody money. [2751.75] Stephen: How are you supposed to run a business like that? [2754.19] Stephen: Let's strike a course with a bunch of farms and see why. [2758.07] Tony: Did you do any filming for that shy? [2760.11] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2760.35] Andrew Lawrence: I've done a few things on the farm before with actually like the last harvest [2767.71] Andrew Lawrence: one we were like just filming with the Mavics and because of the like sensors on it, it was [2775.35] Andrew Lawrence: going from dusk to night and just had the sensors on, but the lights and the combine [2781.35] Andrew Lawrence: like startled the drone and it couldn't move in the slightest. [2785.67] Andrew Lawrence: And it ended up just going and hitting the wind, like the windscreen of the combine [2791.27] Stephen: harvester when you were getting freestyle, one out, mate, going to orbit that [2796.75] Stephen: pumpkin mine harvester and go for it. [2801.87] Jack: Bligh rate, mate. [2803.19] Jack: Bligh rate. [2803.71] Tony: Probably needed a good camera though. [2806.27] Tony: Dusk. [2809.83] Stephen: Well, now you've got the o4s, you can just slap one of them in. [2814.11] Stephen: Oh, that's up with your Mavics soon enough. [2816.75] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, but no, it's just, I dunno. [2820.27] Andrew Lawrence: It's very like sort of, I feel like it's going to be more of a niche thing that they use FPV [2827.51] Andrew Lawrence: generally for filming, you know, on TV. [2830.03] Andrew Lawrence: It's usually like an action sequence or, you know, like I think long gone the days, like [2838.59] Andrew Lawrence: everyone knows what FPV is now. [2840.63] Andrew Lawrence: Like it's so mainstream, isn't it? [2842.63] Andrew Lawrence: That it's only sort of like, yeah. [2845.95] Andrew Lawrence: No. [2847.19] Jack: No. [2849.55] Jack: Stubbs, he asks, he says, I know Andrew does a lot of mountain bike stuff. [2854.35] Jack: How does he do the hard line with all the wood sections and stuff? [2859.03] Andrew Lawrence: Um, usually just film like sections of it, to be honest, to be fair, even from like the [2867.15] Andrew Lawrence: opposite hillside, you can fly like nearly like 99% of the course for you, the trees. [2874.59] Andrew Lawrence: It's just obviously being on a mountain and trying to film the same mountain. [2878.79] Andrew Lawrence: You just, you're never going to get like the best reception through it, to be honest. [2884.71] Stephen: I guess you're not getting as far away as you would if you were in a car. [2889.51] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [2890.63] Andrew Lawrence: But no, yeah, I'd say probably mountain biking is my favorite stuff to film, to be honest. [2895.75] Andrew Lawrence: Usually it's, you're not like just on the shoot, it's just you and a filmer or two. [2902.15] Andrew Lawrence: And despite the guys that are riding, it's like no hassle. [2905.51] Andrew Lawrence: And just like, don't know, just going up somewhere nice and it's time to be honest. [2909.91] Andrew Lawrence: They got a helmet. [2910.91] Jack: They're all armored up, you know, if they fall off a bike, yeah, if they fall off a bike, [2916.75] Jack: that is way more of a concern than you even coming anywhere near them. [2921.75] Tony: Live as well, they come to live bits of the drone. [2925.43] Tony: I think they did in the, um, yeah, yeah. [2931.11] Andrew Lawrence: They did all like, they do all crank works and everything now, don't they? [2935.19] Andrew Lawrence: They're going out to, um, like dark fest in about two weeks. [2940.15] Andrew Lawrence: One in, yeah, big one in South Africa to go and film all those guys, do the hundred foot jumps and all that crazy stuff. [2950.31] Stephen: What do you use for mountain bike footage? [2952.11] Stephen: What's your go-to rig for that? [2953.91] Andrew Lawrence: It's normal, like five inch, like the free sort of free style, you know, to sort of normal five inch rig. [2963.03] Stephen: Yeah, like that looks like an AOS design with those braces. [2968.15] Jack: Yeah, just trying that and just have a look at all the bracing in the world. [2977.91] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, don't show your fire ID, a little serial serial numbers and those. [2984.63] Andrew Lawrence: Um, yeah, we just try like trying out to see what, uh, different braces actually do to the noise. [2992.55] Andrew Lawrence: Really with it, just like little sort of test rig, but, um, [2999.11] Andrew Lawrence: because you run such slow camera angle and probably running like, I don't know, [3002.55] Andrew Lawrence: five degrees, but the GoPro is like pretty much at zero that I don't know. [3013.35] Andrew Lawrence: There's just something about the way, I guess, cause you, most people fly like, [3019.11] Andrew Lawrence: like the standard sort of frame. [3020.55] Andrew Lawrence: You're just so used to that. [3021.67] Andrew Lawrence: It just flies in like a really nice way for filming, um, bikes and whatever else. [3027.99] Stephen: I guess to replace parts as well. [3031.35] Jack: Yeah. [3033.19] Jack: What's been your favorite filming experience? [3036.47] Andrew Lawrence: Um, I don't know, really done loads of, uh, pretty crazy things to be honest. [3044.15] Andrew Lawrence: And I don't know, got to fly it down in street at the back of end last year. [3050.95] Andrew Lawrence: When they're doing the election, I don't know. [3053.83] Stephen: Well, are you flying around down in street? [3055.51] Stephen: I thought there'd be someone, uh, knocking you out the sky. [3058.39] Stephen: Pretty smartish. [3059.27] Stephen: That's, that's a very unusual one. [3061.03] Jack: Trappy got away with it. [3063.35] Stephen: Oh yeah. [3064.31] Stephen: 20 years ago. [3065.91] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3067.19] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know. [3068.63] Andrew Lawrence: Guess it should be, but I wonder how much they even knew I was there. [3073.19] Andrew Lawrence: If you know what I mean with it. [3076.55] Stephen: What would you use for that? [3077.43] Stephen: Was it just a little woop or something? [3078.87] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, just a little sub 250. [3080.87] Andrew Lawrence: We've got one kicking about just to like, you know, like reels. [3085.51] Jack: You do look like you're inside a, uh, a shiny shipping crate. [3090.47] Jack: Yeah. [3091.03] Jack: Your background. [3092.47] Jack: It just needs a bit of OSP. [3098.79] Jack: Yeah. [3099.27] Jack: I just, it looks like, you know, it looks, you just need like a spray paint this way up in red. [3107.35] Jack: Yeah. [3108.39] Andrew Lawrence: Just really, really sort of. [3111.83] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3112.07] Andrew Lawrence: You just don't want to see the rest of the room. [3113.51] Andrew Lawrence: That's just covered in absolute chaos from building and 3d printing. [3120.63] Jack: I'm very familiar with this. [3125.83] Jack: I bought a grow tent. [3129.43] Stephen: What? [3131.75] Jack: Grow your own mushrooms. [3135.59] Stephen: Whatever's in there, mate. [3137.11] Stephen: Just have it be damp and sweaty for a while. [3139.67] Stephen: See what happens. [3140.71] Jack: Yeah. [3141.03] Jack: I mean, I imagine what the hell is. [3149.03] Jack: No, I'm not growing anything. [3151.11] Jack: It's a 3d printer. [3154.39] Jack: It is. [3154.87] Jack: Wow. [3155.67] Jack: It is a grow tent lights. [3157.99] Stephen: Why'd it, but why even a lot of resin printer you've got? [3161.99] Jack: No, uh, it's so I can print some ABS. [3165.03] Jack: I wanted to give that a go. [3169.03] Jack: Dangerous stuff. [3169.67] Jack: Yeah. [3170.47] Jack: Get the hose out the window. [3171.75] Jack: Yeah. [3171.99] Jack: I've got like a little bento box and that I'm thinking about maybe building a 3d printer. [3179.59] Jack: And yeah. [3180.23] Jack: What's for ABS? [3181.03] Jack: What are you going to do with the ABS? [3183.43] Jack: Print a part so I can build my own printer. [3187.99] Tony: To a series on YouTube. [3189.91] Jack: Yeah. [3190.23] Jack: These are little menus. [3191.75] Tony: And if you get really fed up, turn that ventilation thing off. [3195.91] Tony: Yeah. [3198.71] Jack: Yeah. [3202.71] Jack: Like I've had to like heated inserts and stuff. [3207.91] Jack: Yeah. [3208.39] Jack: Like, like soldering irons that are blunt. [3211.75] Jack: Yeah. [3212.07] Jack: So it's just a bit of a mission really. [3214.31] Stephen: I've done the, uh, yeah. [3215.51] Stephen: I've done the, uh, inserts on the end of a soldering iron. [3218.79] Stephen: That's a bit. [3221.91] Jack: Yeah. [3222.55] Jack: Don't forget which ones you've heated up and which ones you haven't. [3226.55] Jack: Because, uh, I did that. [3228.31] Jack: Heated one up. [3229.19] Jack: It fell off. [3230.31] Jack: No, no, no. [3231.11] Jack: Heated up. [3231.67] Jack: It was still hot. [3233.03] Jack: And Mike. [3233.75] Jack: Yeah. [3234.07] Jack: Just burn the f*** into my fingers. [3240.87] Jack: Well, I feel like Lurgy. [3242.15] Jack: Lurgy, if you listen to this, I feel like you with a magical great end. [3246.15] Jack: Talked about you, but. [3247.75] Stephen: Oh, Subsy has another question. [3249.83] Stephen: He'd like to know about the Attenborough filming that you did. [3254.71] Jack: Oh, Lord Attenborough. [3257.11] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3257.91] Andrew Lawrence: So I did, uh, first one was like green planet, uh, a few years ago. [3263.27] Andrew Lawrence: I'm filming in the jungle. [3264.95] Andrew Lawrence: Um, and then I've done, uh, quite a few things for like, uh, next flip. [3271.67] Andrew Lawrence: So, um, is it our planet? [3274.47] Andrew Lawrence: And then, um, re well, no, was it? [3277.51] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3277.91] Andrew Lawrence: Last year, done one for the new blue planet. [3281.35] Andrew Lawrence: That should be this year or next year. [3284.87] Andrew Lawrence: Sounds phenomenal. [3286.39] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, no, it's a good fun. [3288.39] Andrew Lawrence: Like last one was in Iceland in the winter. [3291.91] Stephen: And not as pleasant as, uh, out in the jungle somewhere. [3297.83] Andrew Lawrence: No, but less malaria. [3300.55] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3301.59] Andrew Lawrence: When, when you're just trying to fly and you're getting like literally bitten to holy hell. [3307.03] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3307.27] Tony: I don't know what I'd prefer. [3308.95] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know. [3309.43] Tony: Being cold or being too hot and bitten. [3311.59] Tony: I don't know. [3312.07] Tony: And just maybe a snake in a trillion. [3315.27] Stephen: I would just think you're more of a spectacle of it. [3317.35] Stephen: The things you must have seen in, uh, in the jungle, some of the fantastic. [3322.79] Andrew Lawrence: Oh, it's crazy. [3324.07] Andrew Lawrence: It's just like, just being in the proper jungle, you know, to feel like everything's [3331.27] Andrew Lawrence: a living sort of entity around you. [3333.27] Andrew Lawrence: It's just, it's insane. [3336.39] Andrew Lawrence: And like, even at night, there'll be just, because there are loads of trees always [3340.23] Andrew Lawrence: just fall down and rot. [3341.35] Andrew Lawrence: There'll be like, sounds like Godzilla or something's coming through massive. [3346.23] Andrew Lawrence: Like smashing over in the middle of the night. [3349.19] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3350.31] Andrew Lawrence: That's fine. [3352.63] Andrew Lawrence: I think like the jungle environment is probably one of my favorite, um, [3356.87] Jack: environments to be in really. [3358.47] Jack: It's just, yeah, especially. [3360.15] Jack: You get all Rambo-y and my, you know, predator and like rot me and dirt all over you. [3365.43] Jack: And cause I'd, I'd get a bit feral. [3367.43] Jack: I'd start attacking Tony. [3370.71] Jack: Walking down the high street to be fair. [3374.31] Andrew Lawrence: Not well, I don't know. [3375.43] Andrew Lawrence: Well, awesome. [3376.47] Andrew Lawrence: Pretty much who is wearing nets over every foot, like even trying to stop them getting, [3384.95] Stephen: uh, I think the jungle might be quite harsh on Scotland. [3389.91] Stephen: I don't know. [3390.39] Stephen: It's not terrible or cold water and I'll Scott it brethren. [3395.99] Jack: Does bug spray not do anything? [3398.15] Jack: Is it just, no. [3400.39] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, but pointless wearing it after a while. [3404.55] Andrew Lawrence: It's like, I think just cause he's putting sweat in all the time anyway, aren't you? [3408.39] Andrew Lawrence: So it's like, there's no point putting it on. [3411.11] Andrew Lawrence: You're just getting eaten alive pretty much the whole time. [3413.91] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3414.71] Andrew Lawrence: Especially flying FPV cause you're not moving. [3416.63] Andrew Lawrence: You can't really swap anything easily. [3418.39] Andrew Lawrence: So you're just like, [3421.75] Stephen: how many times you like bitten in the middle of a shoot and you just can't move. [3424.87] Stephen: You just got to keep smooth, keep smooth. [3426.87] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3427.59] Andrew Lawrence: Cause it's, you're doing such, especially like those things, you know, [3430.63] Andrew Lawrence: just flying through canopies and whatever, but you're doing [3433.67] Andrew Lawrence: such like you're hardly on the sticks really. [3437.35] Andrew Lawrence: So it's not like you can like jerk anywhere. [3439.99] Andrew Lawrence: You're just being, I don't know, like a surgeon. [3442.87] Andrew Lawrence: Like a lot of the time yeah. [3447.67] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3447.99] Andrew Lawrence: Which flying really slow and smooth is actually quite hot. [3451.43] Andrew Lawrence: Like, you know, to not have any kind of eating you alive. [3455.03] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. [3455.83] Andrew Lawrence: Bumps, but, um, no, the one in not Scotland in Iceland is pretty insane. [3461.91] Andrew Lawrence: Cause it was, cause it was obviously we were filming storms. [3466.71] Andrew Lawrence: Like quite a lot of time you can actually stand up because it was so windy and then [3470.55] Andrew Lawrence: trying to fly in it. [3472.39] Andrew Lawrence: Just like, yeah, I can't stand up time to fly.
