[278.12] Koel: No, it's a very heavy frame for the prop.

[288.12] Koel: He basically, well, he wanted to buy one of my GoPro Hero 5 sessions off me
[293.12] Koel: and he magically arrived with some proper sized props for my tiny whoop,

[300.12] Koel: But it does fly now and I was terrorizing my cats.

[416.12] Curry: I had a problem with my VRX for my the RunCam VRX for OpenIPC.
[423.12] Curry: When I plugged it into my goggles, it didn't work.
[426.12] Curry: And after speaking this about RunCam and demonstrating certain things,
[429.12] Curry: they just said there was a hardware problem.
[431.12] Curry: And I've just got the replacement today, which does work.
[434.12] Curry: So I'll be able to go out and fly stuff soon.
[437.12] Stephen: Isn't it great to be a beta tester?
[439.12] Stephen: I mean, reviewer.
[441.12] Curry: Yeah.
[442.12] Curry: Well, it was it was very much pre-release hardware.
[445.12] Curry: And they have made some small changes since then.
[449.12] Stephen: I suppose the actual customers are the beta testers.

[518.12] Curry: It's the same types of chips as are in there,

[524.12] Curry: So it's a bit more than a Radza and it's got two Wi-Fi units on there.

[534.12] Curry: from what I've seen of it is literally a Radza 3W in there.
[539.12] Curry: And it's even got this cable you have to join between the Wi-Fi unit

[979.66] Frank: I've written an article for the BMFA because they had a survey of their clubs at the end
[995.66] Frank: of last year, which is where as part of this survey, it was like, what sort of blind do

[1004.66] Frank: And 40 percent of the club said they did some sort of FPV flying.
[1008.66] Frank: 40 percent?

[1010.66] Frank: That's a lot.
[1011.66] Frank: Yeah.
[1012.66] Frank: And so they're trying to sort of re-arrange their magazine so that it kind of reflects
[1022.66] Frank: a bit more of what people are flying in their clubs.
[1025.66] Stephen: They're changing leadership.
[1027.66] Frank: Yeah.
[1028.66] Frank: They're asking, you know, we want more FPV stuff.
[1036.66] Frank: We want them to be like lots of how tos and kind of guides and things.
[1042.66] Frank: So I wrote one on how to have an FPV in your club, just like a normal club field.
[1051.66] Frank: How do you like go from there being no FPV to having some FPV there?
[1057.66] Frank: So basically, sort of the things that we've learned over the years and the things we've
[1062.66] Frank: put into practice, things like LDO know are just like, these are the frequencies you want
[1067.66] Frank: to use.
[1068.66] Frank: This is how you want to do it.
[1069.66] Frank: This is how big the space you're going to need.
[1072.66] Frank: This is how you're going to do stuff.
[1074.66] Frank: So I've sort of written that as well as having things in there like John Lancaster's scale
[1082.66] Frank: FPV that we talked about last week.
[1084.66] Frank: But I thought, and some balls of stuff with FPV on it, because I thought that might sort
[1089.66] Frank: of get people to realize, you know, these clubs get to them to realize that it's not
[1095.66] Frank: just you allocate a corner to some race squads.
[1102.66] Frank: That's not how you incorporate FPV into your club.
[1104.66] Frank: I mean, it can be.
[1105.66] Frank: But you talk about frequency boards like the Oldsons used to have.
[1109.66] Frank: Yeah, because you can't reuse images just generally from the internet.
[1116.66] Frank: So I made just a copy, basically, of all the frequency charts that you've ever seen, but
[1122.66] Frank: just simplified the very bare minimum.
[1124.66] Frank: And the caption on that is, break out your pegboards.
[1127.66] Frank: So yeah, that is exactly.
[1130.66] Frank: That worked pretty well, didn't it?
[1133.66] Frank: Exactly.

[1138.66] Frank: It's hard to give them back.
[1142.66] Frank: Well, the system, the remains of the system is kicking around behind me somewhere.

[1155.66] Frank: Hopefully by the time I get around to building a mark two, it'll be obsolete.
[1160.66] Stephen: Why do you think this puts the BMFA?
[1162.66] Stephen: What's next on the agenda?
[1163.66] Stephen: Are you considering following it up if it goes well?

[1168.66] Frank: So I'm going to the scale FPV meetup at BMFA Buckminster in May.
[1176.66] Frank: So I will try and do a sort of a photojournalist cover of that event.
[1183.66] Frank: Because again, that's kind of like the easy way in from the guys who are like, no FPV,
[1190.66] Frank: to show them the scale models like the Spitfires and whatever.
[1194.66] Frank: You can't say no to that.
[1196.66] Frank: Exactly.
[1197.66] Frank: They can't get their backs up about that too much.
[1200.66] Frank: So that's a nice easy way in.
[1204.66] Frank: And then I was thinking about the tricopters, the tricopter preservation society that Jack keeps trying to start.
[1215.66] Frank: That might go down quite well with them.
[1217.66] Frank: That's sort of up their street.

[1221.66] Stephen: FPV with aerodynamically stable aircraft is what you're going for.

[1238.66] Curry: I sort of in my head, I think the big difference is you'll be like flying as someone to turn on.
[1244.66] Curry: And you'll say, oh, because they've got a picture of someone's other feet, but they'll be in sandals.
[1249.66] Curry: And that will be the main difference between this and a regular FPV meter.
[1255.66] Koel: Well, so that's the one weird thing, though, I guess, right?
[1258.66] Koel: It's like there's that divide where it's like the wing and the plane guys, the FPV guys.
[1264.66] Koel: It's almost like this, basically, right?
[1266.66] Koel: Like, I mean, in Canada and it sounds like the UK as well.

[1271.66] Koel: But what I found when I was in Taiwan was did I tell you guys about the random wing I went up with?

[1390.66] Stephen: out of the four S550 until it was very, very hot.
[1394.66] Stephen: And the guys were actually pretty impressed by the analog DVR that I sent them because
[1399.66] Stephen: they just have not seen any chase cam footage at all before then.

[1406.66] Stephen: As many of them from the ground.
[1411.66] Koel: The plane and wing guys here in Canada, they were almost kind of put out of standstill
[1417.66] Koel: for a bit because they have what's called MAC, which is I guess Model Aircraft Association

[1423.66] Koel: I think that's what the acronym is.
[1425.66] Koel: But they got lumped in with drones in the last year and all their flying fields were
[1430.66] Koel: basically like, nope, you can't fly here anymore because now you need registration.
[1435.66] Koel: Now you need anything that's over 250 grams.
[1438.66] Koel: They basically lumped it all with the RPAS or just any radio controlled thing.
[1444.66] Koel: And it essentially grounded like the entire model aircraft guys, which they weren't very
[1451.66] Koel: happy about that.
[1454.66] Koel: And also, I mean, on a similar note, as far as like regulations in Canada, as of yesterday,
[1460.66] Koel: a ton of stuff just changed.
[1462.66] Koel: So I don't know if it's if you guys care enough or if it's really relevant to the audience
[1467.66] Koel: or not, but it's a lot of people are kind of up in there's a bit of mixed opinions
[1473.66] Koel: about it, I think right now, because even sub 250 gram drones, in order to fly at advertised
[1481.66] Koel: events, now you need what's called an SFOC, which is a special flight operating certificate.
[1487.66] Koel: To get one of those, you can't just have your basic license, you have to have your advanced
[1492.66] Koel: and then you have to apply for the special flight operation certificate.
[1496.66] Koel: And you're supposed to apply those 30 days in advance.
[1499.66] Koel: So anybody that had events they're supposed to shoot in April, well, good luck.
[1506.66] Koel: And yeah, there's a lot of like, they're actually opening up beyond visual line of sight stuff
[1512.66] Koel: now here in Canada, though.
[1514.66] Koel: But as well, there's, yeah, but there, there's an additional sort of exam.
[1519.66] Koel: It's basically like, like, there's different level of complexity, but it's like complex
[1525.66] Koel: operate was it level one complex operations.
[1529.66] Koel: And it's an additional test beyond basic advanced flight review or yada yada.
[1535.66] Koel: So there's new stuff in the works.
[1537.66] Koel: But yeah, they're opening up beyond visual line of sight here, but also cracking down on sub 250
[1543.66] Koel: for advertised events, like you have to apply for a special certificate.
[1548.66] Stephen: So I guess if it's a major public event, then it's fair enough to tighten up the safety precautions,
[1553.66] Koel: which I totally get that.
[1555.66] Koel: Yeah, because then you get every Tom, Dick and Harry pulling up with a DJI mini three.
[1560.66] Koel: He got a thousand of them in the sky.
[1562.66] Stephen: And that's, yeah, there'll be some guy trying to eat a normal and fly his DJI mini around and just make some trouble.

[1575.66] Koel: So for those SFO sees though, this, the operating certificates before you just had to apply.
[1580.66] Koel: Like all you have to do is just, you know, do the application, submit your plan and get approval.
[1586.66] Koel: Well, now there's, there's four different levels of it.
[1589.66] Koel: As far as complexity goes, there's very low, low, medium and high.
[1594.66] Koel: Every application now for the very low is minimum $20.
[1598.66] Koel: Next level up is 75 medium complexity is 900 and high complexity is $2,000.

[1608.66] Koel: I don't know if that means like you're going to get a one event permit or one event permit.

[1617.66] Koel: And like maybe there's a way that they could like encompass it as a blanket.

[1623.66] Koel: But if you look up on Canada Transport Canada stuff about the new drone regulations, it's, it's changing.

[1635.66] Stephen: It puts a lot of money into the coffers of whatever society is trying to organize FPV legal stuff.

[1644.66] Stephen: And it's nothing to businesses, but then it has this chilling effect on anyone who does a recreation.
[1649.66] Koel: Well, or say someone's getting into the business of things and they want to say fly an outdoor festival or something.
[1657.66] Koel: Well, you know, Joe Schmoe, drone pilot guy, who's trying to get this event, you know, this event.
[1664.66] Koel: It was going to drop two grand.
[1666.66] Koel: Like he's probably not even getting paid two grand.
[1668.66] Stephen: So it's the game becomes well, you know, what can you get away with before you get slapped for the fine.

[1676.66] Koel: It's one of those things where typically, at least for me, generally, I like to fly for fun.
[1682.66] Koel: And if it does involve work, as long as it's, you know, within the realm of legalities, that's what I do.

[1692.66] Stephen: I guess you just try and make it someone else's problem and say, well, that's on the event organizer.
[1697.66] Stephen: I provide the equipment and the ability and the legal ramifications.

[1706.66] Koel: And I guess tie that, those SFO C costs into the invoice.

[1766.66] Stephen: So if you don't want to go because they've got a photographer's just walking around and unless they want someone running around.

[1777.66] Frank: I mean, that's not the unheard of events is that you do have to go around and actually like physically get permission from everyone that's in the photo.
[1787.66] Frank: That's why you quite often see a lot of photography where all the people are out of focus or like they're not identifiable because it's shot down at like foot level with a lot of photos of feet.
[1799.66] Koel: Well, when I was shooting a documentary for the air show London, fake London, I had a regular camera.
[1810.66] Koel: We're running around, but we had like a production assistant strictly walking around with the clipboard.
[1815.66] Koel: Like if we interview you, you have to sign off on this or else we can't use it just for liability.
[1821.66] Stephen: I think it's easy enough to put up a sign like next to the ticket booth.
[1825.66] Stephen: If people are buying a ticket and say, look, buying the ticket constitutes acceptance of these criteria, you know, you may be filmed.
[1832.66] Stephen: And if you don't want to be filmed, don't buy the ticket.
[1835.66] Frank: Or there's quite often an opt out where there'll be like a colored lanyard or a hat or something where if you're opting out of the photos, you'll wear that colored lanyard or whatever.
[1847.66] Frank: And so that makes it sort of a bit easier with the photography of going through and being like, oh no, that person's got lanyards.

[2639.26] Stephen: And this was one of those rarefied solutions that I think captured an image digitally,
[2646.14] Stephen: recorded to an SD card, and then gave you an analog version of that output.
[2652.74] Stephen: Some time later, it wasn't necessarily at the same time as the image was captured.
[2657.94] Stephen: It had a latency that I think was somewhere in the 40 milliseconds area, which I'm sure
[2663.98] Stephen: Curry will be able to tell you this experience with open IPC is it was borderline vomit inducing,
[2671.1] Stephen: but it did record really nicely.
[2672.58] Stephen: So it was like this tiny alternative to a GoPro, which is probably not, not a problem
[2677.38] Stephen: for wings on a quad.
[2678.62] Stephen: It was, it was challenging.
[2680.46] Stephen: You had to plan ahead, but yeah, a nice board.
[2685.22] Stephen: I own like three or four of those.
[2687.46] Koel: Well, Jack, remind me, I think you said this or someone told me this before that back in

[2697.74] Koel: Your GoPro was your HD cam and FPV cam all in one, wasn't it?

[2706.5] Jack: That, that I did at the GoPro hero three black, they've done an update getting on a log out.

[2727.38] Jack: It was, it was second to the, the, the dynamic range.

[2733.86] Jack: You'd be flying in the sunshine and then couldn't see for about five seconds, wait for a stamp

[2753.62] Koel: And like the exposure is like, right on that switch in your house.
[2759.9] Stephen: It's either on or the run cam ones weren't that bad.
[2763.78] Stephen: They say this came out the same time as the Cadex turtle.
[2767.58] Stephen: And then they came and followed that up with a run cam mini HD, which was the same thing
[2772.66] Stephen: with a nano sized camera.
[2774.7] Stephen: And then there was a baby turtle from Cadex and these eventually standardized onto like
[2779.58] Stephen: a 20 or 25 millimeter board that had the SD card and gave you an analog video output
[2786.74] Stephen: and then a 14 mil or 20 mil camera.
[2790.1] Stephen: They were all right.
[2791.1] Stephen: They were kind of nice in that you could actually start and stop the recording using a you are
[2796.82] Stephen: from the FC.
[2797.82] Stephen: So you could have a switch to start and stop the recording that was kind of cute.
[2801.82] Stephen: That was nice.
[2802.82] Stephen: It was a pain to wire up and a little bit finicky to configure, but once you had it
[2806.06] Stephen: set up, it was a doddle and you'd, when you started the recording, you'd get a flashing
[2811.1] Stephen: red thing in the top corner of the screen.
[2813.38] Stephen: So you knew it was on the recording, which you know, you don't, you know, how many times
[2817.66] Stephen: you landed with like a GoPro or something and then found out your SD card decided that
[2821.5] Stephen: it wasn't up to task and stop recording.
[2824.06] Jack: So it was nice to know it was actually doing the job who wants to tell him about the Mobius
[2830.38] Jack: camera.
[2831.38] Stephen: I tell you what, I was shopping for that stuff, but the Mobius and all that kit were the reason
[2836.58] Stephen: why I didn't buy it once for so long.
[2838.5] Stephen: They look like poo-poo.
[2839.5] Frank: I had the the Hobbyking Action Cam HD, which is like a decased Mobius.
[2847.94] Frank: That was, that was great.
[2849.34] Frank: I stuck that on like, uh, that was before I even have anything that flew that was RC.
