[87.76] Lee: all in one board and it's just a little bit of soldering and you can have a quad built
[92.4] Lee: and flying fantastically well. In fact, it's gone from that men in shed kind of environment
[97.16] Lee: to now a multi billion probably at this point, global industry. So a huge thank you to all

[136.72] Mako: with the community. Being on your podcast, not just once, but five times was an honor and a joy.
[143.68] Mako: Every time I joined, it felt like I was catching up with old friends. The ladies night episodes
[148.72] Mako: will always hold a special place in my heart. It's not often that I get to connect and fly with
[153.68] Mako: other women in this hobby. So being able to go on your show, laugh, share stories and celebrate
[159.44] Mako: our passion for Jones was really something special. Here are a couple of my favorite moments on LDO.
[165.6] Jack: I just want to quickly talk about Mako and her father and what her dad did and where he was
[173.28] Mako: stationed and things like that. We're an Air Force family. My dad who's no longer with us
[178.64] Mako: was in the Air Force and he was a tech sergeant and he was a mechanic. So he worked on planes
[184.56] Mako: and he worked on the SR-71. That was one of the planes he worked on, which is a pretty famous
[190.8] Mako: plane. It's known for being really fast, like three times the speed of sound. DIA basically
[196.16] Mako: went to Lockheed Martin and asked them to create this crazy surveillance plane. So that's what they
[201.76] Mako: came up with and they're about 30 made. And my family was stationed in California at Beale Air
[208.08] Mako: Force Base, which is basically the home of the SR-71. So pretty much all 30, 32 of them have been in
[215.52] Mako: and out of that Air Force Base. So my dad's probably climbed around on all of them, but he
[221.12] Mako: was a crew chief. So he was in charge of basically all the mechanics and making sure the plane ran.
[225.76] Jack: Incredible. I mean, that was absolutely one of my like childhood poster planes that I just
[231.68] Jack: absolutely obsessed over. The technology, I mean, even the way the nose cone retracted in and out
[236.88] Jack: of the engines to make sure that the air coming in, it got such incredible speeds that the nose
[243.36] Jack: cones had to move in and out to be able to bring the speed of the air down to where it could
[247.44] Mako: actually combust. SR-71 would go up so high, yet be able to take surveillance of like parking lot
[254.96] Mako: lines basically back in the 60s, like how... The lens on the camera that was ridiculous,
[264.8] Jack: wasn't it? That was like one of the most expensive pieces of kit on the aircraft. And it had this
[269.44] Jack: just insane zoom. And as you say, you can see, read license plate numbers from however high
[276.56] Jack: they were flying. It's mad. Mako, have you got any classified info?
[281.84] Jack: Can you tell us any secrets? If I tell you, I'm going to kill you.
[289.04] Jack: My high club.
[291.76] Mako: The tail jack and then kill jack, please.

[310.08] Jack: Yeah. What didn't help was the rumble went off when I went out and I've got a little cat door
[316.32] Jack: stop and it went up and it went, oh, I'm stuck on a cliff. And cut long story short, the rumble
[323.44] Jack: locked me out of my house. I opened the door and the room is in the way and then I'm too fat
[333.04] Jack: to fit through the door. I think one of the last videos I saw from you Mako, you seemed like you
[337.36] Jack: were flying at the children. Maybe I thought take your class size down a bit. It's like,
[342.32] Jack: let's get rid of some of the troublemakers here. They look like they're having great fun. They were
[346.64] Matt: going after you quite in big ways. Greetings folks. Apparently Let's Drone Out is having its
[353.6] Matt: 10th anniversary. Congratulations. Let's Drone Out is an incredible effort to keep your show running
[361.6] Matt: every week continuously for 10 years. Just thinking about how I was involved with Let's
[369.44] Matt: Drone Out. I think Jack emailed me about six years ago, I think, asking if I wanted to
[377.04] Matt: have an interview or a chat or something like that. And I thought, what the hell does he want
[384.72] Matt: to interview me for? I'd know nothing about drones or quads or anything like that. So I put him off.
[390.0] Matt: I hope that he would forget about it. But came back a year later and asked again, and
[396.88] Matt: he has a way of convincing you to do things. And so I said, yeah, okay, I'll go on the show.
[404.8] Matt: Quite nervous about it because I'd seen some of the incredibly knowledgeable and technical experts
[412.8] Matt: that had been on the show before. And I was certainly not that. But anyway, Jack made me
[421.04] Matt: feel comfortable. I enjoyed my time on the show. And over the years, I keep checking back in and

[1000.66] Jack: there are many. So me, Frank and Cole were out flying most of the day. Christian joined us towards
[1010.26] Jack: the very end. Stephen met us on our second spot. Frank, where were we flying?
[1019.14] Jack: In Mary England. We were flying in Mary England. Very Mary England.
[1027.7] Jack: That's the first weird look that we've got so far.
[1032.5] Jack: We started off the day at Daunton Country Park. And, well, actually, it would more happen
[1038.5] Jack: thicket. We walked through Daunton Country Park and decided there were too many people, children,
[1044.9] Jack: particularly. I haven't been there before. You have now. And then we went to almost the coast.
[1058.58] Jack: I mean, it's sort of a lake, inland sea water, saltwater lake. And we flew around a bit of
[1065.38] Jack: green space there that, thankfully, Chris G. managed to find us. We tried to dye a tower.
[1073.14] Jack: It was very, very crowded. The timing was challenging. We all walked out of it with
[1079.54] Jack: our quads in one piece, except for a couple of props, which is quite a good result considering
[1083.94] Jack: the location. So we did it on a high note. I've done an early deboard. Oh, did you kill it?
[1090.26] Jack: Yeah, it's pretty. Yeah. Yeah. I might have a go at trying to bring that back.
[1094.42] Jack: Very, very scenic, but very dense foliage. Any approach kind of challenging. And you could kind
[1100.58] Jack: of go into this tower and technically go down and dive out the tower, except you were then going,
[1107.14] Jack: exceedingly fast, into dense foliage. Neither of which were great at stopping quads.
[1114.42] Jack: Yeah, I generally let everybody else go first. And I just kept hearing,
[1118.34] Jack: bang, crash. It was like the old Batman. So yeah, I basically just was taking it to a very
[1127.62] Jack: chill place. I did the scenic route, yes. And let everybody else break things.
[1132.9] Jack: I had one quad with an O3 on it. And I thought, yeah, this is going to be great for some visuals
[1138.1] Jack: of the tower. I hadn't realized that I got a fixed lens adapt of the camera set at 45 degrees,
[1144.98] Jack: which probably wasn't the right move for that kind of flying. It was a little bit challenging.
[1151.14] Jack: Yeah. But the angle there.
[1155.94] Jack: Yeah. All in one piece at the end, apart from Jack's props.
[1159.06] Jack: Yeah. Well, I gave it a good go. That's all I can say.
[1163.54] Jack: You said that you didn't actually see the inside of the tower. The VTX blacked out and you just
[1167.38] Jack: tried to go forward. It was more like the sort of dynamic range of camera adjusting from my
[1177.38] Jack: daylight into darkness. So it's like one of those signals where someone flashes the light.
[1182.66] Jack: On the third flash, you have to respond. It takes too long, doesn't it?
[1186.82] Jack: I was looking at the side a bit when he came in through one of the windows and I just saw
[1190.9] Jack: this quad kind of going slightly forward, but very, very low. And I thought, that's not going
[1196.02] Jack: to go well. It was kind of a wet fog noise. What about his famous car?
[1201.86] Jack: That was just Jack. He took off into a tree,
[1204.74] Jack: like aggressive punch up directly into the tree canopy to start with.
[1209.22] Jack: That was the first act. Always remember to look up.
[1212.58] Jack: Yeah. Well done, Jack.
[1216.34] Jack: Yeah. You nearly blended my face off, Stephen. You were pretty close.
[1222.18] Jack: Reverse a little bit. It turns out, yeah, 45 degrees, not the right angle for proximity
[1227.14] Jack: blinds. It's not correct.
[1229.94] Jack: What's a few props in the face between friends? You didn't hit me. That's the main thing.
[1236.9] Jack: Are you all right? Are you suffering?
[1239.06] Jack: No, I'm good. I'm just now fettled enough, confident enough that we are actually feeling
[1244.74] Jack: it. I finally dug out my old analog quads as well as a digital kind of high polluting,
[1250.9] Jack: sneering person for a while. I dug out the old analog quads and flew, I think,
[1256.18] Jack: the first proper quad that I had, which is a QAV 105 and a nameless RC leader 2.5 as well.
[1265.22] Jack: Both quite a lot of fun to fly, although going back to FRS Sky on the QAV 105,
[1272.58] Jack: I flew around myself in tight, so I'm like, well, that's good. I put it down and said,
[1277.54] Jack: thank goodness it didn't fail safe, wasn't it?
[1279.38] Jack: The key is not to fly digital and then fly along straight after because then you just
[1283.94] Jack: think your camera's broken. Or you just kind of punch out and you're like, well,
[1288.5] Jack: something's not quite right. And you realize, oh, yeah, I am that far away from myself why
[1292.26] Jack: I'm behind this thing. We were freely flying around behind this giant masonry tower. And
[1297.22] Jack: I'm like, yeah, it's fine. This is a great place to fly. And then Jack's like, yeah,
[1300.1] Jack: I don't actually have signal. No signal at all.
[1305.62] Jack: We should mention we also flew together on Saturday.
[1309.22] Jack: Yeah, we were in Grand Maison Valley, where we encountered a farm kid, William,
[1314.66] Jack: oh, yes, a level of dangerous, the indomitable farm kid who likes to charge their own
[1320.58] Jack: quad bikes with a helmet on and their brakes. That was fun to chase him.
[1325.46] Jack: On my footage, I've got him and I've got all these sports coach
[1329.3] Jack: dipping around and Cole tried to do some long range and his first attempt was about
[1335.54] Jack: 70 meters because someone had his model set to whoop.
[1340.9] Koel: Oh, that's right. And I was in angle mode and I said, what is happening? I'm like,
[1345.14] Koel: I didn't even know how to fly it properly. I was like, you can literally see the quad.
[1349.22] Jack: But yeah, so the lesson learned was check your model before you take off. That is very important.
[1357.14] Jack: I bet you felt rusty, Tony.
[1359.14] Jack: For two years that was.
[1360.74] Jack: It was rusty.
[1362.66] Jack: I thought Tony's video looked pretty good.
[1364.26] Jack: Yeah, Tony Blue liked you to the tin man. I thought rusty he was.
[1369.94] Jack: I'll manage to put something quickly together from the footage from Saturday.
[1374.02] Jack: I did actually enjoy it. And I'm glad we got a few of my quads working again.
[1379.38] Jack: I literally.
[1380.02] Jack: We, you mean, Jack.
[1382.74] Jack: You're nice. The fossil squad.
[1384.9] Jack: Yeah, I've got the long range up and running.
[1389.38] Jack: Beautiful. It's come a long way.
[1391.3] Jack: Yeah, I didn't even recognize it. It all looked different.
[1394.58] Jack: And yeah, and it's got GPS rescue. So you'll get back to yourself.
[1399.7] Jack: I think the latest has the language and lawyer and physician.
[1403.62] Jack: Yeah, you can hold a specific height if you want to just scoot around and get panoramic
[1408.34] Jack: footage or you can do like screw this. I need to just take a break and position.
[1413.22] Jack: Hold it.
[1416.34] Jack: Because you're always getting it shouldn't you and you do.
[1418.82] Jack: Yeah, I've been standing wearing the goggles for 15 minutes.
[1422.9] Jack: Is it out of beta or is it spinning beta?
[1425.46] Jack: It's this weird thing with beta flight where they don't release very often.
[1429.3] Jack: And features have been in the code base for quite a long time at this point.
[1432.66] Jack: If you look at the distance between like where 4.5, which is technically the current
[1437.86] Jack: stable and what the code base is now, it's a lot of these features have been out being
[1442.18] Jack: tested very well. So yeah, I probably just fly the main branch now.
[1447.14] Jack: So it's not in this and it's not.
[1448.74] Jack: Well, it's it's available. You can flash it.
[1451.38] Jack: Yeah, I mean, what's the release candidates?
[1453.54] Jack: It's just an arbitrary like that's that's going to be the interesting.
[1460.34] Jack: I think they're just gun shy about releases. A lot of people get that.
[1463.78] Jack: Like you want it to be perfect. You know, everything has
[1466.02] Jack: pictures that kind of put in before the release.
[1468.18] Jack: I'm not paying so close attention these days, but yeah,
[1471.7] Jack: I was flying just the latest development build from 4.3 onwards.
[1477.7] Jack: And everyone takes a great deal of care in that code base.
[1480.58] Jack: If there's any width or danger, all hands on deck, everyone starts fighting to lock it down.
[1486.1] Jack: So yeah, I don't have any bombs. We just fly the development branch.
[1490.34] Jack: Because you were on emu flight.
[1491.94] Jack: Oh yeah.
[1493.38] Jack: Boons, did you get that?
[1495.38] Jack: The emu devs are now on really good terms with the beta flight devs as well.
[1499.78] Jack: I just swapped it to emu because it was I think they had just the 7 emu setup,
[1504.66] Jack: which was really just it just worked.
[1508.9] Jack: And I posted that video and I got some nice comments from people.
[1512.9] Jack: I haven't really spoke to or seen for a few years and people were saying,
[1516.9] Jack: I've done the same as you, Tony.
[1518.26] Jack: I haven't flown for years and years and years and now I'm flying again and enjoying myself.
[1522.9] Jack: See you fly again.
[1523.78] Jack: So I had some nice comments.
[1526.18] Jack: Get back in the fold, mate.
[1527.62] Jack: Yeah, sometimes it all works.
[1530.58] Jack: So I did try and improve your software a little bit,
[1533.38] Jack: but I think you're finally getting to the point where everything works again.

[1536.9] Jack: I literally blew dust off my trans.
[1540.1] Jack: That thing's 10 years old, the same as this show.

[1554.34] Jack: So every every menu comes up, you know, except the one that actually changes the channel.
[1558.34] Jack: That's just getting brightness control, input selection, steadiness.
[1562.5] Jack: And I couldn't find the channel selection at all.
[1565.06] Jack: Took me like five minutes.

[1604.34] Jack: It's a model flying club and they're very welcoming.
[1607.3] Jack: They bring round cakes.
[1608.26] Jack: Sometimes they have a barbecue to make us feel very welcome.

[1613.14] Jack: Fields quite small, but there's no obstructions around it.
[1617.06] Jack: So you can extend right out over the trees and the brush and everything.
[1622.58] Jack: On the Saturday, the wind was really high and we we still race.
[1628.66] Jack: There was gusting about 30 miles an hour.
[1630.58] Jack: Yeah, it was very windy.
[1631.78] Jack: So the track was designed accordingly.
[1634.66] Jack: We had a big purple gate.
[1636.42] Jack: So a marathon gate, I think.
[1640.82] Jack: And then we had like a row of flags, which we do like a 180 and go down those flags.
[1646.58] Jack: And we do an England turn after that and then fly over the trees.

[1653.86] Jack: And one person did get their wings stuck in the tree.
[1656.1] Jack: I'm not sure if we've got that back yet.

[1658.66] Jack: We did try, but it was literally right, right at the top of the tree.

[1667.3] Jack: But yeah, on Sunday, it was much calmer.

[1674.82] Jack: But it's quite nice on the fixed-wing racing because it's not as intense as the quad racing.
[1685.06] Jack: Like you do a heat, it's about two minutes long, just like it is in a quad race.
[1688.74] Jack: Format is similar, except that you get scored on total number of laps rather than hot laps.

[2067.06] Jack: And they have seen that because the entire drone is between the two lenses.

[2292.74] Jack: It did a really great job of capturing HDR because it had a bit of a sensor on it.
[2297.22] Jack: And I'm really good at doing post-processed image stabilization as well.
[2301.94] Jack: Like, before DoraFlow came out, there was like a phone app where you could take the
[2306.5] Jack: footage and stabilize it afterwards and choose how stabilized you wanted it to be.
[2310.66] Jack: And then you could just upload directly to YouTube from the phone.
[2314.34] Jack: Yeah, I used that a number of times with pretty good results.
[2317.22] Jack: And they've done some really nice stuff like their latest 360 camera.
[2321.94] Jack: You can now change the lens on them and stuff.
[2325.54] Jack: I like the DTI.
[2327.78] Jack: On this, of course, because one of the problems you've got, of course,
[2329.94] Jack: if you've got this big dome lens inside, you don't have that handle.
[2333.78] Jack: So as it comes into land, it's got these little flick-out licks, flick-out.

[2366.74] Jack: I found in the air, I found the scene really easy to get rid of and it's just walking on.
[2371.86] Jack: The only problems I've had with it is underwater.
[2374.02] Jack: But that's because it's not consistent water.

[2378.34] Jack: It's just it can change.
[2379.94] Jack: So you can pick up scene line there quite easily.
[2383.3] Jack: But I would certainly buy it for my next action camera instead of a GoPro.
